In other news...

Well we had another bumper St Leger festival in Doncaster and in Bawtry. Warmest congratulations go to the lovely Katie Maini who won the Ladies Day ‘Best Dressed’ competition. She had earned her place in the final after winning a similar competition at our Visit Bawtry Race Day back in May. Ross Jarvie, our chair, clearly has a talent in picking out the winners…. Shame it didn’t apply to the horses too! Our very own Tori Gunputrao, Meetings & Events Manager from the Crown Hotel, was also selected to be in the final ten from thousands of hopeful ladies. Congrats too to Sue Skipper who won our ‘Ultimate Race Package’ Facebook competition which reached over 27,000 people! Staying with fashion tickets are also on sale for the Yasmine of Bawtry, Joseph Ribkoff fashion shows which takes place on Thursday 4th October at the boutique. Seated fashion shows take place at 11.30 am and 2.30 pm and tickets should be reserved by calling 01302 710106. And, for those who love a good designer item, Robinsons of Bawtry is excitedly awaiting imminent delivery of its new luxury French label for AW18 Balmain. A big Bawtry well done goes to Toby Peck of the Vanilla Rooms for making it into the final of the ‘Colourist of the Year’ at the Yorkshire Salon Hair Awards. And, a Bawtry ‘Good Luck’ goes to Simon and Sonya Nokes of The Classic and Contemporary Cake & Coffee Shop at Yorkshire Caravans as they embark on a second venture as tenants of the Pilgrim Fathers in Scrooby. The White Horse Inn at Barnby Moor also has new Bawtry owners so lots of luck to successful publican Andy Longworth and Claire Fleetwood in their latest venture. Plus, The Turnpike is under new management as Mark and David of Womacks of Bawtry take over the reins on one of the oldest pubs in Bawtry. Known for its great eating establishments many of our restaurants feature in the annual Eastside Magazine ‘Restaurant of the Year’ awards which take place on Monday 15th October at The Earl of Doncaster. We hope you will join us in wishing all the Bawtry bars and restaurants that have been shortlisted the very best of luck! Moving on to art, Ruth and the team at Limited 2 Art host their next ‘Meet the Artist’ event with World renowned artist Todd White on 11th October 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm. They are thrilled to be able to welcome him back once again where collectors will be able to meet him and purchase new, rare and unique pieces from his latest collection.

there are still a few places left for the Hallowe’en ball at the beautiful Bawtry Hall, Bliss Travel have relocated from The Courtyard to the Market Place (next door to Ziniz) and Bawtry Gym is now open from 6am every week day. Sessions are available on Wednesday and Friday between 8am and 12noon, just call to book your appointment with Amy Harmer. And last of all, Sunday 25th November sees the return of our fantastic Christmas event so pop the date in your diary – more details will follow next month. Bawtry Garden Club

I am very pleased to report that the Bawtry Show, held on 8th September, was a great success and the event was very well supported, with a good turnout in the afternoon to admire all the produce, arts & crafts, etc. Peter Wainwright won the most points over the whole of the classes, and was awarded the ‘Elizabeth Cruddas’ trophy. - a very worthy winner. A huge grateful thank you to everyone who helped prior to the event and on the day of the Show, including the stewards, the refreshment team, all the helpers and the Air Cadets, who turned up at 8.00am to put out all the tables and chairs, and returned late afternoon to put them all away! A special thank you also to the businesses in Bawtry who kindly supported us by donating a raffle prize. The Club next meet on Tuesday 2nd October at 7.00pm, in the Methodist Church Hall, Station Road, Bawtry. The speaker is Rachel Barrowcliffe and the topic is a ‘Seasonal Talk’ with a Q&A session. For further information please contact Sylvia, our Chairperson, on 01302 719015.

BAWTRY WI In order to help women in our local community, Bawtry WI has chosen to support the charity ‘Changing Lives’, in Doncaster. Changing Lives is a community based resource centre for women, providing social, educational, recreational, counselling and support services in a safe, confidential and accessible space. It provides support for women who are victims of domestic violence. These women and their children often have to leave their homes taking nothing with them. Throughout the year, we collect toiletries, clothes, towels and other items for Changing Lives so that these can be passed on to help women in this situation. This is just one of the varied activities we are involved in. If you would like to find out more, why not come along to our next meeting on Wednesday 17th October at 7.30pm at the New Hall, Bawtry, you will find a warm welcome. Our speaker for the evening has a talk entitled ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Crem!’ which should be entertaining! We meet on the third Wednesday of every month and if you require any further information, please contact our secretary Sandra Crawford on 01302 711420 or 07928 113863. T

Well it seems that summer whizzed by in a flash, and Bircotes Swimming Club took a well deserved break – although our swimmers kept on swimming in their leisure time and on their holidays. We returned with a vengeance and competed in our first event at Ponds Forge: the Robin Hood 2018 Open Meet hosted by Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club. We took 16 swimmers (some of our swimmers are pictured at the event) and competed in a total of 66 races. We had a great success with a great haul of Personal Bests, some swimmers achieving medals (Dom and Jake) and 2 more swimmers achieving County times (Seb and Jake) in 2 events. We know exactly what we need to focus on to continue improving and shaving milliseconds (yes, it is milliseconds that count!) off those race times. Elliot Clogg, an ex-member of the hosting club and Commonwealth swimmer was also present at the gala, and some of our swimmers were lucky enough to meet him.

An update from our Swimathon which you may recall was held in August. This was a sponsored swim (notably on an incredibly hot day, when the poolside officials were wilting... and they weren’t the ones swimming for miles!). We raised a grand total of £704 to be shared equally between Asthma UK and the Club. Thank you to all those who supported the swimmers which included some as young as 6, and others who swam distances of 5 miles. We have a packed calendar of events coming up – we have a friendly gala with Retford Swimming Club for the younger members of our Club and a big gala for the older competing swimmers the following week in Matlock. By the time you read this, we will have competed at both of those and be preparing for our next one a few weeks later. We wish our swimmers every success and hope to continue gathering a haul of PBs, medals and County times. Community problems and thanked the residents for their support.

Unfortunately, this year’s ‘Respect Bawtry Classic, Historic and Super Car Pageant’ was somewhat dampened by the wet weather. However, as always the organizers, supporters and volunteers put on a great event for the town. The Bawtry Residents Group would love to see more events like the pageant and with this in mind we are looking forward to working with and supporting Councillor Alan Claypole, who has now taken over the role as the Chair to the Bawtry Town Council Events group following the resignation of Councillor Muxlow. Hopefully, I will be able to give some positive news about this in next month’s issue. At the Police and Communities Together (Pact) meeting held last month, concerns were raised by residents regarding anti-social behaviour that was reported to be taking place in various locations around our town. The police officer in attendance informed the group that they were going to try and tackle these

Because of the ongoing problems in our town the newly appointed Police Inspector Lynne Lancaster has been invited along to the next Bawtry residents Group meeting (27th Sept, 19:30 in the Crown Hotel). Mr Peter Bentley also gave the group an update on the newly reformed Neighbourhood Group, Peter is working hard to bring the group together and is working closely with the Bawtry Residents Group and the Bawtry Town Council. At the last Town Council meeting the new N.W. group were awarded a grant of £150 to complete the mounting of lamp post signs. If any residents wish to take part in the scheme can you please contact Peter at west.bawtry.nwn@gmail.com At the last BTC meeting it was reported that Councillors Claypole and Cartwright attended the public meeting held at Harworth Town Hall. The meeting was called to discuss the proposals for a Waste Incinerator plant planned to be built in Harworth. It was a well-attended meeting with over 200 residents present with the vast majority opposing the proposals. At Septembers BTC meeting it was agreed that the Council

would send a letter of objection to Nottinghamshire County Council, the main concerns being the siting of the plant and the increase in the volume of traffic. Councillor Cartwright is liaising with Councillors from Harworth and Bircotes to hopefully improve cross border cooperation on this matter. It is with sadness that the Timber joint on Bawtry high Street is up for sale, the current owners have been in situ for over 40 years and without doubt the shop is a great asset to Bawtry. The resident group wish to thank Mathew and Richard for the years of service to all and all the best for their future adventures. At the last BTC meeting, representatives from the antifracking movement were in attendance looking for the support from the Council and Bawtry residents. It was decided by the BTC that a member of the residents group would be invited to accompany the councillor representative to attend the fracking consultative meetings, a representative has been chosen and will be reporting in this magazine on a regular basis, full minutes will be available from these meeting.

Hi Everyone, Autumn is definitely with us bringing cooler weather and better temperatures for our 4-legged friends. The summer months have been fantastic however it has been a struggle trying to keep all of our dogs cool. We are full to overflowing with some beautiful dogs and cats in our Sanctuary that all need to find their fur ever homes. Pedigrees, cross breeds, large and small. One such dog is a 9-month-old Golden Beagle cross (Golden Retriever x Beagle) she is a little too large to be a handbag dog but she is the prettiest, funniest, loving puppy. However, she does not have many manners, so time would have to be spent on her training, but she is very biddable and she does listen. She originally came from Cyprus and has been re homed but unfortunately being a young puppy, her new owners found her a little too much. She is a smallish Retriever size and will probably fill out a little but don’t think she will get a great deal larger. As a Sanctuary we see some awful sights, but we never do get used to them. Two weeks ago, a Greyhound was dumped on the lane between the vets and our Sanctuary, he was a very sick boy and very emaciated it was touch and go in the first week whether he was going to survive. A week later he was released from the vets hospital, he is a very lucky boy and now the long process begins to rehabilitate him. He was chipped but we were unable to contact his previous owners. Having your animal chipped it so important, however when moving house you need to make sure you change your address with the I D company you have used. The only good thing I am able to say about this is that he was at least left next to the vets and our Sanctuary where he could be found, I hate to think what could have happened if he had been left in a field or in the middle of a wood, let’s not dwell on that! We are desperately in need of funds and with this in mind have arranged a Ladies evening event on the 12th October at 7 pm in the Parish Room, Tickhill. This will be a fun evening with stalls selling Jewellery, candles, handbags, knitwear/tops, scarves, pamper your pooch stall and some surprises. If you are looking to start your Christmas shopping or just want to spoil yourself do come and have a relaxing browse. Join us and enjoy delicious homemade cake and fresh coffee, also sample our Mayflower “ Cocktail “ all included in an admission fee of £5. Please help us raise money for this fantastic Charity and the work it does. Our fundraising is so important and without the generosity of our supporters we would not be in a position to help animals like the abandoned Greyhound. Mayflower Sanctuary are here to re-home abandoned, abused and unwanted cats and dogs, we will never euthanize a healthy animal, and will keep all our long-term animals until their forever homes are found. Cats and dogs come to us for many reasons, marriage breakup, people fall on hard times and life in general alters for many people. If you are looking for that special pet or any further information on the work we do please call us on 01302 711330 Looking forward to seeing you on the 12th October at the Parish Room, Tickhill. Please support our fundraising night, if you would like tickets please call Margaret on 07776 783242 however it will be possible to pay on the evening. Bye for now.

Mary Female 18 Mths July 2018 ? No Yes

Mary came into care with her two kittens after their owner decided that she couldn’t look after them anymore. Mary was a housecat who escaped from an open window and returned later that day. Unfortunately she was ‘in season’ and was now pregnant !! Even housecats should be spayed as they are terrific escape-artists when in-season. Her kittens are now grown up and ready to find new homes of their own. Time for Mary to do the same. As a previous housecat she would be happy to remain so. She has been spayed so no longer does her Houdini act! Despite being with her kittens, Mary is unwilling to share with another cat so would be better as an only pet. That way she gets all the fusses.

Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:

Fluffy Female 2 Years July 2018 No Some Yes

Fluffy was found wandering on an industrial site hungry, matted and generally uncared for. The workers there knew the regular cats on the site but had never seen this little lady before. Whether she was a stray looking to join the feral colony there or she had been abandoned, we will never know. To add to her troubles, Fluffy was being bullied by the resident cats. One of the staff felt sorry for her and took her home but unfortunately she didn’t get along with her dog. So here she is looking for a new home to call her own. After a few good meals and the matts brushed out, she has been transformed to her former glory. Fluffy would probably be happy as a housecat but, more than likely, she would like a secure garden to explore. Her past is uncertain but hopefully her future is bright.

Arts Review & what’s going on - OCTOBER 2018 •

Southwell Open Studios 13-14 October 10am to 4pm www.southwellartists.co.uk

ROSE FIRTH – GREAT BASSETLAW FLOWER SHOW Who are and what do The Friends of Doncaster Museum do? Their lectures are listed on this page and I know some of you are curious. They meet monthly to enjoy a talk on the arts or heritage, but their main purpose is to support the Museum and Art Gallery and each year, the Friends identify a way to support the development of the Museum through fundraising activities. The 2019 target is to fund a mobile planetarium at the museum which will be there for at least two events, to encourage families to experience the inspiration of space whilst celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing; these events will be free. Also, The Friends will fund the membership of The Contemporary Arts Society, an organisation which has been in operation for almost a hundred years and during that time has bought and gifted many valuable works of art to galleries across the country. Doncaster, during a previous period of membership was allocated seventy works of art, including some of the most valuable in the collection. By raising the funds to pay for a renewal of membership, Doncaster Museum will continue to develop its art collection into the future. Doncaster Civic Trust has donated £2000 towards the new membership, and a very successful fundraising event with Gervase Phinn boosted funds further. If you wish to join the Friends, come along to one of their advertised meetings. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sun Exhibition: 13 Oct – 9 December OPEN ART with all your pictures on the walls Art History Lecture: 12 October 10.30 HIDDEN MEANINGS: Symbols in Art. Misson Village Show Well…wasn’t that a fabulous village show! Thanks to everyone who entered exhibits (huge increase on last year) and to all those who came along to view and enjoy refreshments on a lovely warm and sunny day - thanks also to the judges who tasted, drank, prodded and poked to come to the right decisions! The quality of goods and produce was superb to say the least and congratulations to all the winners of the various categories. To name just a few: Jayne Watson for her interpretation of Village Life in Misson category ‘Messing about by the River’ which will be displayed in the community centre – also congratulations on her stunning winning photograph of a Hoverfly. Julie Watkins gained first prize for her beautiful roses – also first prize to Andrea Wilcox for her gorgeous blackcurrant Gin, which sold for a very handsome price at the auction at the White Horse Inn the next day! Over £1,250.00 was raised for community projects, thank you to all who made bids and Gary and Michael for doing such a good job of peeling money from pockets! Winners or not, all entries were of such a high standard, it was a joy to behold, and overall winner of the show was Andrea Wilcox, vice chair of Misson & Springs WI. Well deserved too!

Wendy Threlkeld – Misson Community Association

Misson Scarecrow Festival

Mick Hickman Photography

During the Misson Village Show the judges (children) walked around the village and awarded first prize to Mary Poppins, second place went to Marg and Homer Simpson and third prize went to Call the Midwife. The judges also decided that a special mention should be made to Coronation Avenue for their collaboration of Superheroes.

Many of the photo’s entered in the Misson Village Show were entries from people who had attended Mick’s course a few months ago and the standard was very high, a few lessons in photography can be very helpful in improving your technique whatever your skill level is. Misson Community Association has arranged with Mick to hold another course on Tuesday evenings, dates are 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th October.

Over 40 official entries were received but well over 50 were on view in gardens, on drives, on fences and in trees…in fact they were popping up all over the place! So many people entered in to the spirit of it and with a trail to follow and rhymes and letters to solve, it made the day so much fun for children and adults alike! Overall winner was Janis James with Mary Poppins, Janis was presented with a trophy, and because of the huge scarecrow success this year, 2019 is already being planned. Thanks to organisers Brenda Lindley and Catherine Bartlett, and all who made such wonderful scarecrows - next year let’s see that magical Misson talent again as I’m sure the festival will be bigger and better! 26 BAWTRY TODAY

The cost is £10 per adult and £5 per child under 18 (children must be accompanied by an adult) meet outside the community centre 6pm and enjoy a couple of hours of Mick’s easy going instructions on lovely autumnal evenings. If you are interested, please contact Mick via Facebook, or email mickhickmanphotography@gmail. com or just turn up at the community centre. Payments are made direct to Mick on the night. As well as the above dates, don’t forget Saturday 10th November for the annual Autumn Clean Up – pop in to the community centre for your sacks and gloves etc from 10am, then refreshments provided by Misson & Springs WI at 12 noon. Sabbatical!

Dear Friends,

I decided to end my sabbatical by visiting my family and friends in my home country, Ghana, in May. I chose the month of May because I thought that being the start of the monsoon season, the weather would be a bit colder than the normal Ghanaian hot weather. I was proved wrong. It only rained twice in three weeks and the temperature was so high that I could not move about freely. Interestingly, I came back to England and thought to myself, ‘thank goodness to be back’. I was proved wrong for almost three months. I had not endured a season of high humidity and dryness since being in England for 17 years. However, someone may ask why a bloke who was born and bred in tropical Ghana would complain about the hot weather. My response is, why wouldn’t I? Trying to acclimatise in England for 17 years has made me to appreciate the freshness of the British summer. As the heat ravaged on in the summer, I had the chance to engage with many people in the community and at church. Most people enjoyed the hot weather. However, I realised that there were some who were struggling with their health in the hot weather. I saw some people struggling to breath and move about gracefully due to the heat. I also realised that as most people made the most of the weather, more waste was generated. Some people even went further and littered some of the waste in the streets and the woods. I wonder if those who littered our streets and woods considered the effect of their actions on others. The bible states, “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7: 12). Some of these people do not realise that such acts, directly or indirectly, contribute to the harsh climate changes we are enduring now – hot summers, cold snaps in the winter, flooding, droughts, etc. On the other hand, some people think that climate change is a myth and its effects do not exist. However, those who watched the environmental programme, ‘Blue Planet’, a few months ago, would agree with me that Sir Attenborough was able to convince some of the climate change deniers about how dangerous plastics have become to our cherished oceans.

28 BAWTRY TODAY

I wonder if you felt comfortable seeing a fish stuffed with plastics or the seabed littered with plastics. I wonder how you would feel if you were that fish. God expects us to be responsible and care for his creation. Remember, we have only one earth and destroying it will eventually destroy the human life. This harvest season, I wonder if I can remind you to consider the bible passage I quoted earlier on (Matthew 7: 12). Consider your actions in your sphere of live and see if any of them affect the environment or other people. If so, then I wonder if you can take the next step by asking God to forgive you of acting in such ways. Finally, try to change your actions by being a better neighbour. In so doing, this world will become a better place to live. Have a blessed month.

Next Litter pick – 10am 6 October meeting outside Premier Stores, Thorne Road

During the six week period (ending on Friday 26th October 2018) they will be consulting on:

Thank you to Pam and Brian for organising the last litter pick – I hear it went well although it can be demoralising to see litter appear very quickly after putting so much effort into tidying the area. This time we are meeting at Premier and then heading off to Gresley/Kingswood Close due to litter problems there and then carrying on to the back of Kingswood estate and finishing off at Kingswood Car Park. Thanks to Iain for this suggestion of litter picking a different area. We are getting fantastic attendance now at the litter picks with new members every time. Everyone is made very welcome and we supply the litter picks, bags and high vis jackets so hope you can join us. We usually litter pick for 2 hours but if you only have 30 mins that would be great.

• Local Plan Vision and Objectives

Post Office

Improvements to the layby on Tickhill Road

Great news that we now have a temporary post office facility in the library. It was a great Team Bawtry approach with huge thanks to the Trustees who got involved with all the legal and planning discussions and negotiations with the post office. It is expected that the facility will be available until we have a permanent post office back in Bawtry which is the plan for the post office.

Rachael attended the Town Council meeting on Tuesday 11 September who suggested that cutting down the vegetation at the lay-by and installing a bin would help with the litter problem and reduce anti-social behaviour. A week later both the area was cut back and a new bin has been installed. Let’s hope this improves the area and the litter pickers will be including it on their litter picks but hopefully we can now direct our efforts elsewhere.

Training Flights affecting residents Thank you to those residents who have contacted me about their concerns and anger at the training flights. I will provide more information in my November update. Local Plan Consultation

• Policies and Proposals – to help decide future planning applications • New sites – for housing, employment and minerals • Supporting Evidence Base • Sustainability Appraisal – assessing the Plan for environmental, social and economic impacts All the consultation documents and additional information, including earlier consultations, are via the following: http:// www.doncaster.gov.uk/localplan

Getting in Touch Rachael will be at the coffee morning in Bawtry Community Library on Friday October 12th from 10am. Do call in for a chat about any concerns and improvements and complaints that you have about Doncaster Council services.

Doncaster Council is preparing a new Local Plan to shape how Doncaster develops until 2032. The plan will influence the location and quantity of new development across the borough. A significant amount of work has recently taken place and much progress has been made since the last consultation on the homes and settlements work in 2016.

Please get in touch with us if we can assist with any way.

DMBC are now informally consulting on the Draft Policies and Proposed Sites which will form the core of the Local Plan and are essential for considering planning applications and decision making.

Thank you for reading this and for your continued support.

NEWS FROM THE EAST NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE INSPECTOR

Dear Readers,

I have taken the opportunity in this month’s article, to raise your awareness about the problem of online fraud. This is because across South Yorkshire, Bawtry and Tickhill have been identified as two of the county’s top ten areas where this type of crime is occurring. We know that fraudsters are targeting people aged 60+ with financial backing. Bawtry and Tickhill have a high representation of people who meet this criteria and may feel relatively confident with online systems, leading them to believe it wouldn’t happen to them. Sadly, this is not always the case and fraudsters are often underestimated, operating like a business by selling your information and targeting people in the most plausible ways. To remedy this we have launched ‘Operation Signature’, which is focused on reducing the risk of fraud by raising awareness. It’s often the case that fraudsters operate from overseas so our ability to tackle them is limited although we do work with our international counterparts to share information. If we can work with people to protect themselves we can make England a less attractive prospect for fraudsters. We know that fraudsters are using online fraud such as pensions and private investment fraud, lottery fraud and dating fraud, but ultimately anything which appears too good to be true, usually is. Through working with CIFAS, a specialist organisation in tackling fraud, we have produced five tips on how to help protect yourself from fraud.

other fraudsters can be overwhelming. With this in mind, we have also pulled together a list of indicators for those visiting or caring for loved ones who may be vulnerable to fraud. There are certain signs and indicators that, once you are aware of, you would instantly identify in a loved one. • Lots of calls over a short period from unknown callers. Fraudsters share information and if just one of these callers receive a positive acknowledgement they will tell others and the calls will increase • Lots of unsolicited post • If one of these letters receives a response or a competition is entered, its likely more fraudsters will begin to target the address • Large or irregular withdrawals from bank accounts If you are concerned about large withdrawals from a relatives bank account, speak to the bank about your concerns. If they are not able to help, contact the Financial Services Ombudsman • Sudden or unexplained changes to investment Pension fraud has grown considerably over recent years and often appears to be a great investment. Banks look for trends of unusual transactions and will be responsive if you make them aware. • Withdrawal. Many vulnerable victims are embarrassed about being a victim of fraud and don’t want to tell family members. If you notice they are isolating themselves or withdrawing contact, you may want to ask them about it.

Check your social media privacy settings. Do you know who can access your information? If it’s not something you would tell a stranger, you might want to set your account to private

If you have any concerns or would like to discuss Operation Signature, the local policing team can be contacted on 01302 385473.

Be wary of unsolicited emails You can reduce your vulnerability to identity crime by being wary of unsolicited emails, calls and texts asking you for information about your passwords, logins or other security details.

Doncaster District is again re-structuring slightly with the movement of some of our response bases. This is intended to allocate resources into those areas where we face the highest demand and, from 22 September, Bawtry will now be covered by officers working from Doncaster Central Police Station, rather than Rossington. However, the East Neighbourhood Team will be split with the PCSOs remaining at Rossington and working under the direction of Inspector Lynne Lancaster. As such, local residents will not notice any obvious changes to local policing.

Choose strong and different passwords You can stay safer online by using strong passwords. You could, for example, use three random words, and also use capitals, numbers and punctuation in the password. Make sure you use different passwords for different accounts. Update you device’s software Make sure you have updated the software on your devices. When that pop-up says ‘update now’, click or tap to accept Be careful when using public Wi-Fi Always be cautious when using public Wi-Fi. You can use it for general browsing, but never use it for shopping or banking We are also acutely aware of the risks to older people who may have added vulnerabilities. Whilst online fraud may not be as prevalent amongst the over 80s, there are other types of fraud which would seem plausible but once they get a positive response the surge of interest from 32 BAWTRY TODAY

I also wanted to mention a few other things;

If you would like any further details on these changes, or information and stories from SYP, you can look at our Facebook page – just search for Doncaster East NHP. Alternatively, you can look at our website page – www.southyorks.police.uk. Finally, if you would like to receive information about incidents, crime spikes, crime prevention advice or news from South Yorkshire Police, you can sign up to SYP alerts by registering via our website (www.southyorks.police. uk) The site will give you more details about the system and I hope to see many of you register soon.

community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Lawn Love! There are times I threaten to astro-turf my entire garden, but then I remember the smell of freshly mown grass and how lovely it is to walk through the dew with the dogs in the morning, and I relent. Of all garden tasks I find lawn-care the most tedious. I am not a lawn enthusiast, preferring plants. For me lawns are a necessary evil. I like sitting on them, walking on them, and they make my flowers look good, in much the way a frame enhances a picture. So, I feel I do have to give my lawn at least a little love and care. By October lawn growth has slowed so you can raise your mowing height by at least one setting until mid-spring next year. If like mine your lawn sprouts moss the moment it rains, raise the mowing height even more so that at least 1 to 2cm of grass shows above the moss after grasscutting. Damp grass builds up inside the mower so give the mower a good brush, scrape or hose down after every use. This necessary housekeeping prolongs the life of your mower. After the middle of October there is no point applying weed-killer, so if you haven’t been diligent in weed control the only option will be hand-pulling them. I am rarely diligent about weed-killing, so you are in good company here! Moss becomes more evident as the weather cools but you’re too late for raking by now. Probably best to embrace the lush greenness: moss lawns are all the rage in Japan anyway. On the other hand, if the weather is still warm and the ground is dry, apply moss killers, rake it out, reseed and water. You’ll thank me next year. 38 BAWTRY TODAY

October is the best time for aerating the lawn. I used a fork for years until I bought a hollow-tine aerator three years ago, and now I’m a convert. You can’t overdo it, insert them every few inches until you’re fed-up. It’s a great work-out. The hollow tines pull out little cores that look like fat worms. Leave them in place to recycle the nutrients. Aerating improves drainage and allows air, nutrients and rain to move down to the roots rather than sitting at the surface. Normally by now there has been enough rain to allow the tines to penetrate the soil making the job easier but who knows what the crazy UK weather will be doing when this article is published. It’s best to fertilise the lawn after aerating if possible. This month is quite a good month for fertilising the lawn if you haven’t already got around to it. Not only does fertilisation give you a fantastic lawn ready for the winter but also offers some protection from the ravages of winter temperatures and diseases. Make sure you collect fallen leaves weekly to discourage moss and disease. I know some gardeners like to discourage leatherjackets and worm-activity but frankly I like watching starlings poke around for leather-jackets, and I like worms, they are my little garden friends, so if the odd worm cast is the price I must pay for their help then I’m happy to put up with them.

Happy Gardening.

Tickhill Lions

It’s early October and Christmas will soon be here. This is our busiest time of year in terms of fundraising. The Christmas raffle and our collections at the firework display and Santa Float help us to support community groups and people in need, across all age groups in the district. Confidentiality means that we are not always in a position to reveal names and show you the enrichment your generosity makes to the lives of the people we help. All we can do is to pass on their thanks and ours to all of you and to the businesses that support us. A few Lions have recently visited Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to see if there is any way we may be able to help. We are also in discussion with the Alzheimer’s Society to see how best we can promote their ‘Dementia Friend’ service. We are also investigating to see if there is any way we can support National Diabetes Awareness Day on the 14th November. We hope to be welcoming our first lady Lion (Lion not lioness) very soon. If you would like to get involved with the Lions or if you think we may be able to help you or a community group please get in touch. RSPCA Bawtry Charity Boutique wins award

Drivers’ Pageant.

The team at the RSPCA Charity Shop in the Courtyard were over the moon to win the best window display in the recent Bawtry Respect

The display used 100% donated items, which caught the judge’s eye, and featured a retro/classic leisure look. The shop is proving very popular and is open seven days a week 10am-4.30pm. Meanwhile, down the road, the Animal Centre crew has been providing vital emergency care for swans caught in the recent outbreak of avian botulism at Lakeside, Doncaster. The National RSPCA Inspectorate team has worked hard to ensure as many of the swans are collected and treated as possible. The local branch is providing some of these rescued swans with respite and care before they make their way to RSPCA specially equipped wildlife centres. The local RSPCA branch helps over 400 wildlife species every year as well as its more well known work caring for dogs, cats, rabbits and other small mammals rescued from cruelty and neglect. In 2017, the National RSPCA wildlife centres helped over 18,000 animals. Avian botulism has wreaked havoc around the Lakeside area, dramatically affecting the swan population, causing paralysis and in many cases proving fatal. At the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre, many of the rescued birds are expected to make a full recovery thanks to the quick intervention. You can support your local RSPCA Branch via the Bawtry shop. You can volunteer, donate cash or shop goods, sponsor the Safe Haven programme and attend events. The Animal Centre rehomes the animals in its care and has a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. The Centre also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. Find out more at www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk T

Running the London Marathon 2019 for the British Lung Foundation I’m Paul, I live in Austerfield and next year I will be running the London Marathon for the British Lung Foundation. This will be the first long distance running event I have ever taken part in. I applied to run the London Marathon last year, for my family, after my father in law, Ron, was diagnosed with terminal COPD. Sadly I also lost my grandfather John, to lung cancer as a teenager. I think you will agree it’s a fantastic cause and I would love you to follow my progress as I run around the villages during my training, you can also keep track of me online. Voglia d’Italia TICKHILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR There is proven evidence that singing regularly can improve your health and wellbeing. Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir welcomes men of any age, so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & 2 Tenor parts). All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience. Although we rehearse, and very often perform, at religious establishments we are NOT a church choir or affiliated to any religious organisation and we welcome members of any faith or none! We look forward to seeing you there!! Our annual summer concert, entitled “From War to Peace” to commemorate the centenary of the end of WWI, took place in June in the Methodist Church, Tickhill, which was as usual followed by a buffet supper – excellently provided by the ‘Friends of the Choir’. This was very well attended and was considered by many, both from choir and audience, to have been our best concert ever produced – compliments gracefully accepted! We then performed at Finningley church in July, which once more was well attended and the performance was greatly appreciated by the audience, refreshments being provided during the interval. Our next concert will be on Tuesday 20th November, at the request of the local branch of the Alzheimers Society and then we will commence our very busy season of concerts in December at Bawtry Methodist Church on Friday 7th December. Our Annual Christmas Concert will take place on Saturday 15th December at 7.30 pm in Tickhill Methodist Church, when entry will be by programme (available soon) - look out for further details! T

Bawtry Town Council - October 2018 Market Hill Taxi Rank

The DMBC consultation at Market Hill to install a taxi rank has been completed with no objections being received. The Town Council is therefore looking to erect appropriate signage and road markings to provide a rank on Market Hill from 10pm until 2am, to enable the safe egress of night time visitors. Suitable supervision arrangements are also being sought and it’s hoped the rank will soon be operational.

Market Hill Stall

Members considered the reinstatement of a fruit & vegetable stall on Market Hill at the September meeting. Consideration is still required regarding rent levels and any potential structure. The Town Centre Strategy Group support the stall in principle and their remit was therefore extended to look to formalise proposals for presentation in October. If a suitable proposal can be agreed any interested parties will be invited to tender for the project in due course and should contact the Clerk to the Council at bawtrytowncouncil@gmail com or on 07494 893954 for details.

Bawtry Enhancements

The Town Council has approved a new notice board and planters on Market Hill to enhance the centre of Bawtry. Installation arrangements still needed investigation but it is hoped that this will be arranged shortly in order that the items can be installed in the near future. The Council has also approached DMBC to install new litter bins at the lay by on Tickhill Road and for the area to be cut back to avoid anti-social behaviour in this area.

Post Office

It is understood that a temporary post office will now operate from Bawtry Library. Three sessions per week are envisaged, operating for around seven hours per week. The Post Office Service has indicated that it is committed to providing a permanent post office in the town and that local retailers are being approached to provide a long-term solution.

on iGas Liaison Group meetings. The Town Council does not have a position in terms of supporting or objecting to “fracking” generally but are concerned about the impact of increased traffic that nearby projects have on the town (as they do with all large developments). Members have been advised that the government is currently consulting on proposals to relax planning permission, at least for the exploration stage, by including it in the permitted development regime or alternatively considering it as part of national infrastructure. If residents have concerns about “fracking” around the district they can comment on the current consultations via the following links: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/ permitted-development-for-shale-gas-exploration https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/ inclusion-of-shale-gas-production-projects-in-thenationally-significant-infrastructure-project-nsipregime The Council will be considering their own response to the consultations at the October meeting.

Grass Cutting and Planting Contracts

Members have agreed the specifications for two Council contracts that will shortly go out to tender. This includes grass cutting and maintenance of Council land at the cemetery, allotments and play area and miscellaneous planting & maintenance around the town. Any contractors who would be interested in tendering for the work should contact the Clerk to the Council at bawtrytowncouncil@gmail com or on 07494 893954

Meetings

The next general Council meeting is on Tuesday 9th October at 7.00pm. Residents & Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings. There is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council. Please come along & get involved.

Members have previously noted current plans for hydraulic fracturing exploration at Misson and Barnby Moor with a Council representative regularly reporting 52 BAWTRY TODAY

Pastor’s Page As I write this my daughter is two weeks away from getting married, by the time you read it I will still be suffering from the shock: my little girl is now a married woman. I remember wanting to get married at 18, then at 21 and finally doing so at 26. The first two times I thought I was mature enough despite what everyone around me said. Thankfully I eventually saw that they were right; come the time I was thinking of asking Sharon to marry me, part of me thought I wasn’t ready but those who loved me said I was now mature enough; again, they were right. This reminds me of Mark Twain who once said; “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

her wedding she will embark on another intense time of study as she looks to, hopefully, eventually becoming a doctor. To grow up physically we need to give our bodies good food, sunlight, sleep, etc; to grow up emotionally we need to learn from our relationships, learn to fulfil our responsibilities and develop a sense of self-awareness. The Bible tells us that not only are we to mature physically and emotionally but also spiritually and, again, to do so we need to play our part in enabling that growth to occur. At one point, St Paul berates a group of Christians for still being like babies when they should have matured after so much time. Maturing spiritually involves several things but perhaps the secret is to spend time with people who are equally determined to develop and mature in their faith and service. At the special launch service of Bawtry Community Church I challenged those present to treat their faith, and that of others, no matter how small it might be, with care and nurture so as to enable it to grow. Church should be a place where people don’t feel judged or inadequate, but welcomed and encouraged; only in this way can we all grow in the most important relationship of all –with him who Jesus referred to as our heavenly Father.

As I think about my daughter entering married life, I marvel at how much she has grown and matured – ten years ago she caused us, and her school, a fair few headaches. But now, aged 23, she has just earned a high-quality degree despite having to work several nights a week to pay for it and straight after

So, as my daughter’s relationship with her Dad gives way to her relationship with her husband; I can rest assured that her relationship with her heavenly Father will have a new chance to flourish. That’s the best thing I can wish for her. T

She’s found herself another man, How did that happen? I’m her no. 1 fan. She walked right out of my home Of his love she’s written a tome

I hope I can let her go, knowing her future is secure, Walking together they will find God’s help for sure A cord of three strands will not easily snap The Bible says, and His mercy knows no cap.

He’s younger, stronger and perhaps wiser too But I’m her first love, always faithful and true. He’s not a bad choice, that much I concede But does she not my love anymore need? You see, he bought her a ring and said I do She did the same, said that her love was true My little girl has left my home, its been hers all her life

Come back and see us , I’ll try and show some grace To that usurper, the one who took my place I’ll always love you, the best little girl The one who used to love to giggle and whirl

They’ve set up their own, as husband and wife. I may be her father, but another loves her too Exclusively mine no more, succumbing to his woo. But that man, my girl, her Mum and me; We know we are loved by the blessed Trinity This, the most precious thing which we share; A heavenly Father who loves us all, adores us with equal care Our past mistakes all forgiven and let go The future is in His hands, more love He wants us to show 54 BAWTRY TODAY

I’ll pray every day that your marriage will be strong That’ll you’ll be quick to admit when you’re wrong Don’t let the sun on your anger go down Remember, love is a verb as well as a noun It’s hard to accept, but all men are little boys He’ll be happy as long as he has his toys With his belly full and a cave or a shed He’ll always be happy that it was you that he wed.

Misson & Springs WI Do you remember Bobby Vee? Gerry and the Pacemakers? Adam Faith or Bobby Darin? Then the chances are you were a teenager in the 60s and would have been filled with nostalgia for those far off days while enjoying our August meeting. It was our 10th birthday party and to help the festivities along we had invited Phil Rylance; he had been a guitarist in a band in his teens, eager to embrace the new sounds which no longer needed a full orchestra. His early gigs were in his home town of Crewe, with occasional forays further afield to cities like Liverpool, where he once played in the same club as a group who introduced themselves to him - John, Paul, George… sound familiar? Jo Phillips, our president - who was also president in 2008 introduced the evening with some reminiscing about the past ten years; then Phil played his guitar and talked about his passion for music until we broke for refreshments. We had called upon the services of Jaysters of Bawtry and were not disappointed with the excellent choice and quality of the buffet. Phil then concluded the evening with a thoroughly entertaining quiz, in which we performed as backing group and racked our brains for the names of singers and the words of their songs. We could not have made a better choice for our celebrations and we recommend him without hesitation if you are looking for a lively evening’s entertainment. We all eagerly queued up to buy his book and his latest CD - this one features songs for young children and accompanies all his car journeys with his grandchildren. If you want to contact Phil, email him at philrylance43@gmail.com After another very enjoyable evening, we were again accompanied home by a splendid moon; it will be dark when we arrive at our meeting next month on Wednesday 26th September. Our guest will be Pat Eames who will talk to us about the history of jewellery making and show us some of the techniques she uses. Do come along and join us; we meet on the last Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre, Vicar Lane in Misson. Just turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578; you will be assured of a warm welcome and refreshments all evening. T
