Lots of activities and events are being promoted on these pages – we are lucky to live in such active communities. By the time you receive this issue, the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early magazine delivery – don’t forget to change your clocks first thing on Sunday 27th October. Are you getting organised yet? As usual I’m not! Last month I urged you to consider anything you wanted to get done or achieve before Christmas and to get yourself booked in with the many businesses offering their services within these pages. For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! The December issue will be delivered to you late November, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th November. This will of course be the Christmas issue, and it is always a jam-packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas Fairs and celebrations. Misson Village Show & Scarecrow Festival T
The village show and scarecrow festival in September was yet again a great success with almost every category being entered, and also 39 scarecrow entries, which this year were characters from books and Paddington Bear was the winner.
Village show winners were Daisy Watts in the children’s section, and Andrea Wilcox was once again the overall show winner in the adult’s section. Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to everyone who entered exhibits. The auction of donated exhibits went very well at the White Horse Inn and raised over £1200 for community projects, and the duck race also went well with over £765 being donated also to community projects…many thanks to everyone for their generosity, and to all those who worked hard at making the weekend a great success. Misson Annual Autumn Clean Up. Saturday 9th November 2019 - 10am-12noon. We always need willing volunteers so please come along and help our ‘regulars’ to keep the village looking good, it’s amazing what you can do in a couple of hours! You know the score by now, all equipment is provided, but feel free to bring a brush and shovel, for those awkward bits that need sweeping up. If you can’t join us on that particular day, how about a get together with friends and neighbours to tidy up around your own areas for an hour or two? Hello, I am Katie and as part of my new role as a Vicecaptain for Bircotes Swimming Club I’d like to share both our most recent achievements, as well as an insight into the experience of a member of our club. Being a member of Bircotes Swimming Club provides many unique skills and experiences for children of all ages. By swimming with us you learn the competitive side of the sport and become able to represent both the club, but also yourself, with skills that could take you far in the sport; many of our swimmers are at county level, and some regional too. I enjoy swimming for the club because, as well as my own personal achievements, I have an influence and role in the accomplishments of others, especially the younger teammates I work with. Part of my role means I help to encourage, mentor and guide younger swimmers regularly, both in training and competition. I find this opportunity very rewarding and I am proud to be a member of the club helping others. An example of these achievements can be shown in our latest Time Trials where we saw some fantastic results. 46 swimmers took part in the trials, 5 of which for the first time. The trials are a great for our newer swimmers, that may have not competed before, as they provide an opportunity to do so in a fun and enjoyable environment surrounded by supportive teammates. Results from the trials were impressive with 95% of swimmers achieving at least one personal best. Furthermore, 20% of these had a clean sweep of PB’s in each event swum. These results were brilliant and we strive to continue with more achievements like these in the future. PROBUS meets in the PARISH ROOM on two Mondays a month. Meetings start at 10.00 when members can have a chat and a cup of coffee before the meeting proper starts at 10.30. We always have a stimulating talk from a visiting speaker after which there are opportunities to have a drink or perhaps some lunch together. In 2020, our meetings will take place in the CRICKET CLUB on the 2nd and 4th THURSDAY with the same start times. Our programme for November and December is:11th November – Remembrance – Members share reactions after a visit to the battlefields around Ypres and the Somme.
To everyone who supported us on the 27th SEPTEMBER either by attending on the day, donating prizes, donating cash, baking, helping to serve and more. We have monthly Lecture meetings (on the first Wednesday of the month, except for summer and winter breaks) and two extra, Special Interest days. We also have trips out to places of interest and a holiday for Members. Our Wednesday, 6th November our Lecture is on ‘ Mad Men and the artist: How the advertising industry has exploited fine art. Speaker: Tony Rawlins Fine art has provided advertisers and the agencies with a great deal of material to use in their campaigns. Tony Rawlins describes some of the processes by which advertisements are created and why the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo have been a particularly rich source of their visuals in adverts. We meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carltonin-Lindrick S8219AP. Coffee is served from 10am and the monthly Lecture is from 11 am to 12 noon approx. Free car parking. Tickets £28. ‘The Houses of Parliament from Fire to Rebuilding, and bombing to Restoration: 1000 years of a British icon’. This highly topical Study Day covers 1000 years of history, art and architecture of Britain’s most famous building: from the disastrous fire of 1834, through to the rebuilding of Barry and Pugin’s new Palace, to the damage of the Second World War and finishing with an update on the current multi-billion pound proposals to restore the Palace for the 21st Century. Lecture Speaker: Dr Caroline Shenton archivist and historian. She was formerly Director of the parliamentary archives and a senior archivist at the National Archives. Her book ‘The Day Parliament Burned Down’ won top prize at the inaugural Political Book Awards in 2013, and its sequel ‘Mr Barry’s War’, about the rebuilding of Parliament, was a book of the year for the Daily Telegraph and BBC History Magazine in 2016. DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST T
Here we are hurtling towards the end of the year and preparations have gathered pace for our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate….see below. We have received donations from some wonderful people who have taken our prostate cancer appeal to heart. Darren held a coffee morning in his garden (with marquees to shelter from the rain!), plus a raffle with prizes donated from local firms, and raised £550! Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had donations from people celebrating special birthdays and anniversaries and requesting donations in lieu of presents. Our regular coffee morning ladies in Hatfield also continue to support us for which we are very grateful. Space limits us to mention everyone, but all our latest news is on the website, although we appreciate not everyone has a computer. At the time of writing (early October) we had reached £33,200.

Our speaker last month was Richard Venables, who some of you might have heard speak at the library a couple of years ago. The subject of disaster victim identification is not an easy one, and one we all hope to never have any direct experience of. Richard started working life as a police officer who was very affected by his experiences of the Hillsborough disaster and went on to establish worldwide protocols for identifying and repatriating disaster victims. He was involved in the massive challenge of the Boxing Day tsunami where there were over 200 00 victims, many of whom had no identification due to being in beachwear when disaster struck. It is a story of an individual who was determined to establish systems to help people in the most difficult of circumstances. Misson and Springs W.I.
The East coast of Yorkshire has been a favourite haunt for holiday makers for many centuries. At our September meeting Mike Higginbottom gave us an insight into the development and history of many of the seaside resorts frequented not only by Yorkshire residents, but also by famous, noble and often royal visitors. Mike explained that the popularity and size of coastal resorts along Yorkshire’s east coast have grown in tandem with the development of the railway system and a lot of the architecture that has become so representative of the historic grandeur of these towns has resulted from rich and famous people who have enjoyed these towns and wanted to see them prosper. Some of the towns covered in Mike’s talk were Scarborough,

Filey, Bridlington, Whitby, Saltburn, Ravenscar and Withernsea. Mike shared anecdotes and interesting historical facts on all of these towns and offered evidence of the rich and varied past each of them has. In October we will be having another of our ever popular Members’ Evenings and our last meeting of the year in November will be our eagerly anticipated Christmas party. Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir T Due to a reduction in our membership at the moment, caused by ill health and people moving away, recruitment is on our minds at the moment. We are always eager to welcome new members and invite men of any age to come and join us so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). It has been proven that singing regularly can improve one’s health and wellbeing. Doncaster Spanish Society are presenting the second event on their Winter / Spring calendar entitled – The Life and Works of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) - undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary talents of her era. Her relatively short life, was dogged by a prolonged serious injury, disease, and a somewhat troubled marriage. Through all this adversity, she triumphed to produce works of stunning surrealism.

A Catch-Up from Wise Owl Oh, that November feeling. Shorter days, less sunshine. Bit more of an effort to get things done. As the seasons change so do our habits. But here’s my challenge: You Humans can change your habits. The one driving me mad right now is to do with single use plastic. It’s everywhere. Did you realise plastic is made from fossil fuels? Fact. If drilled, shale gas will go to make more plastic. Astounding! The site at Misson Springs seems mothballed still. The Environment Agency has placed a large air monitor near the entrance. Two more bits of good news as I write this, however. After the earthquakes in Lancashire there will be no more fracking in 2019 in the UK. Scotland is to continue its moritorium on fossil fuel development. Humans, there is hope! Back to the challenge. Lots of you are taking reusable bags to the shops now. Many containers can be reused or repurposed. Some local outlets are storming ahead with refillable products: shampoo, conditioner, washing up liquid, detergent, cleaner fluid and toothpastes. Foods are available too: cereal, muesli, pastas, rice, spices, herbs and nuts. And I know loads of Humans who are leaving the plastic wrappings at the supermarket. A great way to make the point that enough is enough, consumers don’t need it and don’t want it.

The November meeting will feature a talk by Dr David Parkin entitled Britain’s Seabirds: Threats and Challenges. This talk was advertised in March but, unfortunately, had to be cancelled. It will focus on the north-east Atlantic Ocean which is home to millions of seabirds; Britain and Ireland play host to some truly magnificent colonies. David will describe methods of monitoring these colonies and show how changes in the numbers can sometimes be related to problems in the oceans themselves. David is an accomplished speaker and an enthusiastic ornithologist and natural historian. He helped found the Department of Genetics at Nottingham University where he became Professor of Avian Genetics and specialised in evolutionary genetics. This meeting will be held in the Rural Learning Centre at the Idle Valley, North Road (A638), Retford DN22 8RQ on Thursday November 14 2019. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Bawtry Residents Group At the last Bawtry Residents Group meeting in September at the Crown Hotel we had guests from the Tickhill and District Lions, Mr George Collier and Mrs Margo Shepard. George is
the Chair to the Lions and gave a broad outline to what the Lions do and achieve throughout the district, many a charity and individuals across the globe have gained by the efforts of the Lions. Mrs Margo Sheppard, who has had a varied life from being a nurse to being in the army reserves and spending time abroad doing nursing spoke about a scheme running in conjunction with the Lions called message in a bottle. This consists of a plastic bottle/ container that contains a detailed message of any medicines and contact details for the person concerned, the container is then placed in the fridge so any emergency responders or doctors are fully aware of the said persons condition, we hope in the near future to hold a small meeting at the Peaks Croft Community Room so to assist any residents who wish to be part of the scheme. Also at the meeting Mr Sandy Young (Chair of BARS) brought the residents attending the meeting up to date regarding the current situation at the Memorial Sports Ground following the sudden and unexpected resignation of four trustees. He outlined how the

remaining four Trustees are taking the MSG forward and establishing/implementing ‘best practice governance procedures and reassured residents at the meeting that the MSG is in good hands despite some of the negative rumours that appear to be circulating on social media. The Neighbour Hood Watch Coordinator for Bawtry, Mr Jerry Cooke informed the group about the significant reduction in crime figures relating to burglaries in our town. However, he also cautioned residents not to become complacent, he urged people to keep all doors and windows locked at all times, the same applies to any vehicles owned by residents. He encouraged all residents to join the NHW and so broaden the areas covered in our town. The date for the Bawtry Town Council Christmas event for the elderly at Bawtry Hall on the 3rd of December, the forms for the function can be obtained from Mark at the old post office (Pastimes and Presents) on Station Road, please fill them in and return to Mark asap. The new fruit and vegetable stall has been installed on Market Hill and will be open for business in the near future. The prospective new tenants will be L&H Cairns and Sons who currently operate a stall on Doncaster market. It is now up to the residents and retailers of Bawtry to use this facility to secure its future. Also situated on the Market Hill are the new flower planters, four in total replacing the out-dated concrete planters that have been in situ for many a year.
Bawtry Trick and Treat Disco will take place on Saturday the 2nd of November between 5pm7pm at the MSG, parents can purchase tickets from Bawtry Mayflower School office for the price of two pounds, be quick as there are only 100 tickets available. Prizes will be given to the best fancy-dress costume for the boys and girls, kindly donated by Yorkshire Wildlife Park. There is even a prize for the best dressed adult. Football has returned to the MSG, the Junior Football teams played six games at the ground weekending the 6th of October, also showing was the rugby world cup. Any further early morning sporting event will be shown in conjunction with the junior football matches, hot refreshments will also be available, please come along and support the children of our town, they deserve it. The Bawtry Town Council announced at the recent meeting on the 8th October that work was to start on refurbishing the floor in the New Hall and also carry out repairs to the leaking roof. Bawtry Town Council have written to the exManagement Committee of the New Hall to see if they will fund these works/repairs from the funds that were available before they returned the Hall to BTC (believed to be in the region of £48k) and that were intended for this purpose, there will be an update in next month’s magazine. It is sad to say the planning permission for the 650 houses south of Tickhill road has been

COMMUNITY approved, this was despite the overwhelming objections of local resident associations and groups. A report in the Harworth Community Hub suggests that DMBC did not object to this planning application, if DMBC did not object it shows that DMBC do not have any consideration or respect for the residents and retailers of Bawtry. Local Ward
Councillor Rachael Blake will be contacted regarding this matter and asked for an explanation why DMBC did not object, we have a serious problem with the flow of traffic through our town as it is, so now with an extra 650 houses on our doorstep what will be the impact, pollution and the traffic congestion that will occur in our town.

This is how I explain Halloween to children: I say ‘Before there was Christmas trees and sparkly snow scenes and surprise presents’ - ‘There was a baby in a stable.’ (I say the words very slowly and clearly and place a bauble, a snowflake, a brightly wrapped box and a nativity scene slowly and deliberately on the table before them, giving them space to make the connection.) Then I say ‘Before pumpkins and dressing up and tricks and treats’ and place a pumpkin, mask and Halloween mega bucket of sweets on the table. ‘There was a time of remembering…..’ And this is true. Halloween – All Hallows E’en (Eve.) All Hallows? Yes, you have heard the word before, elsewhere. It is part of the prayer that Jesus taught his followers, which we know as the Lord’s Prayer or the Our Father… ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name’ – blessed be thy name. All Hallows, a blessed time. For this is the time in the churches year when we remember the dead; the saints and martyrs and all the faithful departed. The inhabitants of heaven. The blessed ones. In all our local churches there will be times throughout this season when we remember our dear departed loved ones and also those who gave their lives for the greater good in the two world wars and in other conflicts since. You would be warmly welcomed if you would care to join us. It is a time for remembering… Because this is a holy season it is important that we mark and celebrate it. We must attend to our internal spiritual life. We must make time for remembrance and thanksgiving and those echoes of grief that never leaves us. For to acknowledge these bittersweet times is part of what it is that makes us human. In the quiet, the stillness, the darkness, at the end and the new beginning it is good to say some prayers, to light a candle, to thank God for all his mercies (and share the trick or treat mega bucket of jelly bats, chocolate eyeballs etc.)

Bawtry Town Council - November 2019 New Hall

Market Hill The fruit & vegetable stall is now installed on Market Hill and the Council is hopeful the agreed retailer can commence trading from 1st November 2019. This is subject to the electrical supply being installed and the commercial lease executed. New planters to match the recently installed notice board have been fitted on the car park and should be planted up in the near future. The old planters have been relocated onto Tickhill Road and Dukes Terrace. The Councils Pay & Display contract with Excel Parking comes to an end in May 2021 and members are therefore looking at options on how to deliver this service in the future. Expressions of interest from service providers will be sought with the Council open to a range of options to deliver the service. Hours of operation and fees will also be considered and the Council will consult with retailers, workers and residents when the full range of available options are known. Plans to renew the footpath are progressing with discussions currently underway with The Crown Hotel in respect of their proposed frontage plans.
War Memorial Unfortunately, the Council has recently been advised that the approved contractor is unable to relocate the war memorial to the proposed library site prior to Remembrance Sunday. Members are disappointed the project has not been completed within this time scale and are now seeking alternative arrangements to ensure the relocation occurs as soon as possible

Recreational Matters New notice boards have recently been installed on Oak Tree Drive and Doncaster Road and approved maintenance plans for the cemetery are near completion with the older graves and kerb sets weeded and filled with new gravel. The Council will shortly consider the need for new seats in the town. After recent changes in staff and the resignation of a number of trustees from BARS (the charity who manage the Memorial Sports Ground), there has been some disruption to planned events for residents and users. The Council has agreed to work with BARS over the next three months as part of a working group to review the future governance of the facility. It is hoped that during this period issues arising from the disruption can be resolved and a plan put in place to ensure the smooth operation of the facility by the charity in the near future.
Events Plans are now well underway for the “Trick & Treat” Disco at the Memorial Sports Ground on the 2nd November and the Senior Residents Lunch at Bawtry Hall on the 3rd December. Full details are on the news section of the Council website.
Meetings The next Council Meeting is on Tuesday 12th November at 7.00pm at the New Hall. Residents & Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings. There is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council during the meeting. Please come along & get involved.

We welcomed Stella Exley from Alne near York, to our October meeting. Stella runs a working nursery and is the National collection Holder of Camassia, with over 85 different species. She is very passionate about these hardy, bulbous perennials, and spoke about the pinnacle of her growing career when, in 2014 she was commissioned by Chris Beardshaw to grow 2,000 Camassia for his Show garden at Chelsea the following spring. What a challenge for her! After a very stressful winter and early Spring it all came good and the flowers were delivered to Chelsea on time and looking amazing. This particular garden won a ‘Gold’ award, and was relocated after the Show to an area in East London, and continues to give pleasure to local residents.
We continue to meet the first Tuesday of the month at the Methodist Church Hall, and at our meeting on 5th November, at 7 pm, Harold Leach Is coming to talk to us about ‘Winter Colour’ in the garden. A really busy and eventful few weeks in Bawtry and Austerfield. Thank you to the many residents who have told us how much you enjoy reading our update – we hope this update is equally as useful. In this update – planning, improvements on Kingswood Close, hedges, dropped kerbs, re-surfacing, people’s history, and an environmental event in Bawtry as well as a few other updates we can squeeze in. Also, don’t forget the great events taking place in the next few weeks – the children’s Halloween event at MSG organised by the Town Council and Mayflower PTA: Illuminate taking place in Austerfield and Bawtry and the annual Bawtry Christmas event on 24 November.
Talking about our history
We had a fantastic afternoon last month with residents attending the theatre to talk about their lives living in Bawtry. As we explained before, it was in the form of a conversation over a cuppa and cake (thank you Sylvia and Margaret for the wonderful cakes). We started with school and managed to get to first jobs. All was recorded by Tony, but we ran out of time and have lots still to talk about so our next session is 26 October at 230 at Phoenix Theatre – if you are reading this after then, it’s not too late to still be involved so please do contact Rachael for further information. At our last heritage group meeting we progressed installing the heritage trail map which we have planning permission for and will be approaching local businesses to ask them to sponsor a plaque to provide heritage information around the town.
Planning
Two new applications in Bawtry – the Bottling plant application to establish a swimming pool, a café and parking and changes to 7-9 Scott Lane. Both applications can be viewed and responded to on DMBCs planning portal but do contact us if you would like a copy. Also good news that the application for the quarry at Barnby Moor has been withdrawn. Not good news though was the granting of the 650 houses in Harworth. I have asked DMBCs Chief Executive to meet with Bassetlaw’s Chief Executive to discuss this application and also how development in Bassetlaw is affecting Bawtry roads. DMBC does not benefit financially from this application being granted and rarely does S106 money move out of the area – this is what I have asked the Chief Executive to discuss.
A few brief updates
Hedge opposite the library – the scheme manager at Peakes croft has worked with DMBCs Street

scene and asset manager to agree how the hedge will be kept under control in the future. Currently there is a 1.5m width now the hedge has been cut and the scheme manager has confirmed that the gardener will be maintaining this. If you are having difficulty accessing your drive due to parking, you can ask for a white line to be put in front of your property – there is no cost – please contact Doncaster council for more information. Dropped kerbs on Martin Lane – these were delayed but should now be completed – if you are having difficulty crossing any roads in Bawtry and Austerfield and a dropped kerb would help – please get in touch. Resurfacing on Spring Gardens and Peakes Croft – this will be taking place over the next few months. Residents who are directly affected will be contacted – do contact us if you require further information. Drug use at Wharfe Street play area – the Neighbourhood Watch group have liaised with Doncaster Council’s Area team to address these issues.
Kingswood close – improvements to play area
We reported last time about the improvements on Kingswood Close. This work has continued and the play area has now had its surface improved; hedges have been cut back; litter and fly tipped rubbish has been removed and we are involved in meetings to address the anti-social behaviour. Concerned about someone who is homeless
Rachael was contacted recently about someone who may have been homeless. In Doncaster, there is a lot of support available and no one needs to be sleeping rough on the streets. If you are concerned about someone who may be homeless please call DMBC out of hours 01302 341628 and request the Neighbourhood Response Team to attend.

How is your mental health?: How did you get on last month with your “voyage of discovery”? Did you try to listen more? Were you able to be a peacemaker? Did you discover a little bit more about who you really are? Remember what Jesus said: “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.” [Matthew 5:9 from The Message] Our uncertain political situation has been affecting the wellbeing of individuals. According to a report this year by the Mental Health Foundation, around four in ten people reported feeing powerless, angry or worried over the last year because of Brexit. And there is no significant difference between leavers and remainers. If true for the whole population, that would mean it has affected around 22 million people. Add to this the impact of other concerns such as the recent protests on climate change and its environmental consequences; and anxiety that social media instils in young people about their body image and we have a mental health epidemic on our hands. The NHS has been highlighting the need to address this. A short film produced for the “Every Mind Matters” initiative as part of World Mental Health Day was narrated by the Dukes and Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex (William, Kate, Harry & Meghan). This is to encourage people to manage the early symptoms of poor mental health. When the film launched online, so many people attempted to view it that the
site crashed. The page posted a message that read: “Oops, something went wrong. Please refresh … or try again later.” Ironically, this could also be a message for all facing mental health problems. Each of us need to be refreshed and to start again from time to time. King David faced many situations which brought him mental anguish. We read his honesty in the Psalms as he wrestled with his thoughts. Then, as he focussed on God, he found a peace and was refreshed. For example, in Psalm 46 he reflects that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” And then, “Be still, and know that I am God …”. Are each of us prepared to take time out to be renewed and refreshed for ourselves? But can we also learn to help others when we see early symptoms of poor mental health? Bring peace, value people and learn to listen. Some people live with mental distress – but some die as a result of it. In 2016 in the UK a staggering 6,000 people committed suicide – and these deaths were preventable. Can we learn “to see the problem; to say the words – ‘are you thinking of suicide?’; and to signpost to support and resources”? Give 30 minutes of your time to take the free on-line suicide prevention training offered through www.zerosuicidealliance.com. This month, are we prepared to save lives?

Can you believe that in the 21st century we still have people sleeping on the floor with no carpets, just a blanket and pillow for comfort. There are people who, through no fault of their own, cannot feed their families. There are young single mums, disowned by their families, trying to hold down a job and be a good parent despite little support.
There are people with disabilities and elderly people who have given everything for this country who now find themselves alone and socially isolated. This isn’t in some far off, third world country but right here across the district we all call our home. We don’t make a ‘song and dance’ about the support your generosity allows us to provide but believe me, it is very much appreciated by the people we help with food and the basic home comforts we all take for granted. We also support school projects that broaden the minds of our youngsters. We also support a wide variety of community groups. All of these support local people and make our community a place we are all proud to call our home.

We are 34 men and women from diverse backgrounds and ages from about 30 upwards with one thing in common – we want to make a difference by helping people and community groups across our district. School children have a whale of a time with recycling T Local school children are set to have a whale of a time with recycling ahead of this year’s Bawtry Illuminate Festival. The festival, that takes place on November 17, celebrating Austerfield and Bawtry’s almost 400-yearold connections with the Pilgrims and the sailing of the Mayflower, will this year include an exciting showpiece made from recycled plastics as part of Right Up Our Street’s contribution to the event. Sculptor Dan Jones is set to work with children from Hatfield Woodhouse, Coppice, Bawtry Mayflower and Everton Primary Dan Jones, Sue Hughes and schools, as well as Class 2 at Everton Primary hosting a series of le School working on the Wha free workshops in Bawtry Library to create a giant whale made from plastics that would have ordinarily been thrown away. Sally Lockey, project director for Right Up Our Street said: “We are so excited to be delivering this year’s Bawtry Illuminate Festival and we are bringing a number of new elements to the event. Dan will be working with groups from the local schools to create a giant illuminated whale.” “The parade, on November 17, will include children from the local schools performing samba music which they will create in workshops with local musicians Janet Wood and Moony Wainwright. “This is going to be a really great family fun event and there are so many people from the area already involved in shaping this evening of light and celebration.” The event will also include several performances from Quirky Choir, Bawtry Phoenix Theatre, Doncaster Waites and a Dance On social ball. “This well-loved festival will have a grand finalespectacular aerial dance piece with pyrotechnics from Periplum called ‘Odyssey’, this will be an evening that you won’t want to miss!” added Sally. The Retford Hub Refreshed! We have been given a makeover, and shop is now welcoming old and new customers, who are impressed with what they find: a brighter, lighter shop, with more café seating, and more effective display space. The Hub is a community asset, and proud of having been chosen to receive the funding for the refurbishment from the King and Miller through the Sizzling Carling Community Action Award. The shop was closed for a week in Septmeber: Hub volunteers, led by Chris Daniels, worked
tremendously hard, removing stock, sorting, doing carpentry, painting and so on. They were joined on Action Day by volunteers from the King and Miller, and it was all filmed for a promotion video by a team from Sizzling Carling – there was even a drone taking overhead shots!
The Mayflower Pilgrim Centre is working well in conjunction with the newly opened Pilgrim Fathers Museum attached to Bassetlaw Museum, and we have already had an influx of American visitors, including one/ some by the name of Brewster. (If you don’t know why this is significant, come and find out!) The Hub is run entirely by volunteers: some work behind

the scenes, where there is lot to do in various ways, and some like to be ‘out front’. Obviously, quite a number of volunteers are needed to staff mornings and afternoons for six days a week, and whenever someone is away for whatever reason it is sometimes not possible to cover that slot. So we would like more people to come forward. It’s not necessary to have any experience: we have friendly volunteers to help newcomers. It’s an interesting experience: you meet old friends, greet visitors and welcome them to our town, and you really feel that you’re at the heart of things – at The Hub!

November Courses at The Hub T
Beginning on 2 November 2019, for four weeks, is an exciting display of original artwork by two leading artists, John Redfern Harris and Bonita Ferguson-Harris BA. (Hons) Fine Art. The two artists have work in collections around the world, including the USA, Russia, China, Japan and most EU countries. The artwork includes oils, watercolours and pastels on a wide variety of subjects: wildlife, florals, figures, landscapes and local scenes. Many of the artworks will be for sale. There will also be a unique preview of some of the paintings that they will be exhibiting next year to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ journey to the New World, which will be featured throughout the region. The two artists are represented by The Hub and will be in attendance at times during the exhibition to discuss their work and take commissions. They are available for painting workshops or demonstrations. Do come in and have a chat. If you need to know more about them, most search engines will find them.
