Today

Welcome to the

March 2019 edition

This month Today Publications celebrates its 14th birthday! Yes, it is 14 years since the first issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. I thank everyone who has supported any of the 6 publications that we now have during those 14 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they find them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! Next month I will be adding our 7th magazine to those published. This time a publication for the residents of Woodfield Plantation, Carr Lodge and Alverley. If you would like to be in this magazine then please let me know. I hope that you will continue to enjoy YOUR community magazine for many years to come. The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th March. Don’t forget to let me have details of anything happening over Easter for that issue. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

Best wishes,

COMMUNITY

Bawtry WI The first meeting of the year proved to be fascinating and intensely poignant. We heard the story of Sir Nicholas Winton, who I am sure many of you will have heard of before. This was the story of a modest man who found himself in Prague in 1938 before the outbreak of the Second World War and who realised that the outlook for the Jewish population was increasingly bleak. Working with colleagues he managed to organise the exit of 669 children on 8 trains - an amazing achievement as each child needed costly exit and entry visas and foster parents in the UK willing to accept the children into their homes. The story became even more interesting as it became evident that our speaker Tim Mulroy had a personal connection with the topic. Tim’s father and aunt had been two of those fortunate children who were saved and came to live in Yorkshire. Hans, Tim’s father was fostered by the Mulroy family in Rotherham while sister Hannah lived with a family in Sheffield. Very sadly their sibling Greta was scheduled to leave on the next train but war had then broken out and it seems that she perished along with other family members in the death camps. Sir Nicholas Winton never told his family about what he had done until his wife found his scrapbooks with all the details in and eventually the story broke in the press and on the BBC programme ‘That’s Life’-which is worth a look at on You Tube for those of you interested! The programme gathered together as many of the children-now adults as they could contact using the information in the scrapbooks. Seeing the programme made Tim’s father realise this was the person who had saved his sister and himself. Sir Nicholas died at 106, having been acknowledged as the great but modest man he was. Our next meeting will be on a very different topic! We are fortunate to be hearing about the Wildlife of Japan, so next month I expect to be reporting on dragons! We welcomed some new members in January and are always happy to welcome more- feel free to come along and see what we are up to. The next meeting is 20th Feb at 7.15 in the new Hall in Bawtry. Please contact our secretary Roberta Eales on07840729545 for further information. T

Misson & Springs WI We all know the phrase that it’s not as easy as it looks, and that was very much the feeling at our first meeting of 2019. James Wood was initiating us into the intricacies of making a gent’s buttonhole - as I mentioned last time, the floral sort not the one with needle and thread. James has been a florist for many years and it is obvious when you see the skill and expertise with which he handles flowers and all the wires, tapes and ribbons which form part of his craft. There is definitely more to making a buttonhole than tying a leaf on to a carnation - well, you could do that, but if you want your corsage to last more than five minutes and not stain your suit or transfer on to the best frock of the first ageing aunt you hug, then you need to listen, watch and practice. And that is exactly what we did, carefully supervised and encouraged by James, who was ably assisted by one of his daughters, Freya. As with all the best speakers, the time flew by and all too soon it was time for a last piece of cake or sausage roll (all homemade, of course) and as James finished his talk, he made

Tickhill & District Probus

a hand-tied bouquet with apparently little effort, testament to his artistry and long practice, and one of our lucky ladies won this in the raffle. Fortunately, the wintry weather didn’t prevent our meeting, and we are hoping that spring will be in the air when we next come together to provide an antidote to the dark topic of our speaker in February. Paul Harrison will reveal the secrets behind his career as a profiler, drawing on three decades of work during which he researched, studied and analysed serial killers. Who said that the WI is all about jam and Jerusalem?

Do join us

you will be more than welcome to drop in as a guest and see if it suits you. Just turn up at the Community Centre in Misson at 7.30 pm on the last Wednesday of the month, or phone our secretary Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578 beforehand. Watch this space for details of our forthcoming programme. T

PROBUS meets in the TAVERN which will soon reopen with a new name – THE CLUB - on Northgate. There is a chance to chat with friends before a stimulating talk from a visiting speaker after which there are opportunities to have a drink or perhaps some lunch with colleagues. Meetings in future will start at a new time of 11.30 – please NOTE THESE NEW TIMES. Our 14th February meeting has had to be cancelled while work continues to improve the facilities of the Tavern. Our next meetings are:On 28th February, John Lower will give a talk on the history of the Chesterfield Canal and the inspiring story of its restoration. On 14th March, Paul Grimley will give us a talk on “the Great War – Soldiers’ Tales”. On 28th March, Probus members will entertain their partners at the Ladies’ Lunch in Styrrup Golf Club. The widows of former members will also be invited. New members are always welcome from Tickhill, Bawtry and the surrounding areas. Come and try us – and the new facilities - out in 2019. RSPCA bags £3,500 from Tesco RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch is delighted to announce it has bagged £3,500 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme, to upgrade their rabbit unit flooring. RSPCA Branch Chief Executive Mary McSherry said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this generous grant by the Tesco Bags of Help community scheme. Upgrading the flooring means that the rabbits now have access to a fantastic area in which to hop, skip and jump. In addition, the staff and volunteers can spend more quality time with the animals, so it’s good news all round. The grant supports the vital work we do to rehabilitate and re-home the animals in our care.” Voting ran in stores throughout November and December 2018 with customers choosing which local project they would like to receive the top award using a token given to them at the checkout. Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it has provided more than £67 million to over 21,000 good causes. To mark Tesco’s 100th year, they have announced two special voting rounds, Tesco Bags of Help Centenary Grants, in summer and winter 2019 with larger grants over wider geographic regions. Find out more at www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp. You can help the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet shop on site for all your requirements. We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. Visit us at www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk T

THE ARTS SOCIETY DUKERIES

Our Wednesday 6th March meeting will be a lecture by Neil Faulkner on ‘Lawrence of Arabia: Excavating a Legend’. On the basis of sensational new evidence from archaeological fieldwork, Neil will contrast the legend of Lawrence of Arabia with the true story of what happened in the famous desert war of 1916-1918. Was Lawrence, as some claim, a liar and a charlatan? Or does the legend reflect reality? Neil will offer a new narrative and analysis of the war and a new assessment both of Lawrence’s role and achievements and of the relationship between art and reality in the creation of ‘celebrity’. We meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Doors open at 10am for coffee and the lecture is 11am to 12 noon. Visitors are very welcome to come to our meetings at a cost of £6 per lecture. There is a free car park at the Centre. For further details of our lecture programme and about our Society, please speak to Suzanne on 01909 290488 or Gill on 01909 540506 or see our webpage: www.theartssociety.org.uk/ dukeries T

COMMUNITY

Tickhill & District Lions Celebrations

Across the globe, Lions are taking action. With over 1.4 million members, we’re the largest service organisation in the world. 2017 was the 100th anniversary year of the formation of the Lions Organisation and in 2018 Lions Clubs celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International Foundation which was formed to support Lions Clubs worldwide.

Jeannette Fish MBE –

In recognition of these anniversaries all Lions Clubs were given the opportunity to make some special awards to members of their community who have ‘Made a Difference’ within their community.

Jeannette was actively involved in promoting events such as ‘Mile of Coins’, ‘Mile of Scarves’ which are then sold raising money for the charity, the ‘Memory Tree’ and the ‘Mid-Summer Walk’, all designed to raise funding for the DCDT in order to benefit the residents in and around Doncaster.

We have made three awards of a special certificate, signed by our Patron the Countess of Wessex Sophie Rhys-Jones, wife of Prince Edward recognising the individual contribution to their local community and there is a special plaque awarded to one of the nominees.

For the certificates:

Peter Oliver and Roger Cousins Peter has long experience of serving the community as a member of the Wadworth Parish Council. Both Peter and Roger are active ‘litter collectors’ and can be seen regularly collecting within the village and the roads leading in and out of the village. Both are instrumental in providing the village ‘Summer Flower’ displays and the village decorated Christmas tree display, making Wadworth a place to be proud of, by those who live there and all who pass through.

A posthumous award was also made to the family of the late Jennette Fish MBE. Jeannette worked tirelessly as long time secretary of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and helped raise funding for the Scanner Appeal, as well as raise funding for the building and equipment of the St. John’s Hospice in Doncaster.

D

For the plaque: Nigel Cannings

Nigel is our local Independent Councillor for Tickhill as well as a councillor with the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. Nigel is also the Tickhill ‘Snow Warden’ as well as a Tickhill & District Lions Christmas Float supporter. Nigel gives freely of his time year in and year out in all weather conditions as a volunteer ‘litter collector’ in Tickhill helping to make Tickhill the extremely clean and tidy place in which to live and be proud of and enjoyed by all residents and envied by all who pass through the town. Nigel undertakes several other duties including being part of the Pavilion Management Committee and the Advisory Committee of our local council.

Film Scene UK in Misson

In January, Misson Community Association organised Film Scene UK to bring Christopher Robin and friends to Misson School to the delight of children and adults alike. It was well attended with refreshments available to purchase prior to the film, which helped to boost school funds. As a bonus, an extra film of Tom and Jerry was also shown, and everyone enjoyed an afternoon of film entertainment which made a nice change on a winter’s day in January. Thanks to all involved, also Misson Marine Club for providing a substantial contribution to the cost so that the Community Association could try out this new venture - their contribution was made from the proceeds of Duck Races.

Bawtry Garden Club

At our February meeting we held our AGM which was very well attended. We also acknowledged our 5th birthday with one of our members providing a celebration cake. Unfortunately, our planned speaker had to cancel due to illness. However, our chairperson and deputy chair stepped up to the mark and provided a plant related picture quiz, which was great fun, and a general gardening quiz. There were prizes for the winning team of 4, and also the runners up. Our next meeting is Tuesday, 5th March, 7.00pm in Bawtry Methodist Church Hall. Penny Forsyth will be talking about 'Bees'. There will also be the opportunity to taste/purchase the honey. Members are requested to bring along any saved flower/vegetable seeds as there will be a seed swap table. The Club have a day trip planned to Bridlington and Reighton Gap Nursery on 1st May, and on 29th June an overnight trip to RHS Wisley and Kew Gardens. Also, please note the date of Bawtry Show 2019, which is Saturday 7th September. This is open to everyone in Bawtry and the surrounding area. We would really appreciate your support with exhibits to help us make it another successful Show! We would love to see new members/guests at our meetings, so why not give us a try. For further information, please contact Sylvia on 01302 719015. T

Bawtry Health Walk

It's been a bit chilly but we have managed to miss the rain on our Tuesday walks in and around Bawtry. We have seen snowdrops and the odd daffodil!

It’s that time of year again…yes Spring is here with any luck! That means our Village Spring Clean is just around the corner on Saturday 27th April 10am-12 noon with the usual wonderful refreshments from Misson & Springs WI after the clean up. Please come along for a couple of hours and help to keep the village clean and tidy, or even get together with neighbours and do a mini clean up around your homes…it all helps. Our village is fast gaining a reputation as a clean and attractive place to visit. As always, equipment will be provided by Bassetlaw District Council, so come along to the community centre on Vicar Lane at 9.45am to collect what you need. Look out for information posters around the village very soon.

Tunnel Tech North, Newington - UPDATE:

Tunnel Tech now have detailed plans that will result in virtual total enclosure of their production process. Once approval to go ahead with the work has been given by the Tunnel Tech Board the job will go out to tender with a view to starting work in the spring. This is a major project that will take about eight months to complete. In the meantime, residents should still complain whenever the odours are present whether it’s in the village, in your home or garden, driving past the site…in fact anywhere. Complain by telephone on 01909-533164 or email environmental.health@bassetlaw.gov.uk and copy in chair@missonparishcouncil.org – new contact Andrea Stewart at Bassetlaw District Council, email: Andrea.Stewart@bassetlaw.gov.uk.

Come and join us for some fresh air on a Tuesday at 1pm outside the Methodist Church, and a friendly chat and cuppa afterwards.

Please mention the time and location of the odours. Amy Ogden is no longer in the environment department, it is now Andrea Stewart.

Britain’s Seabirds: Threats and Challenges Our March meeting will feature a talk by David Parkin called Britain’s Seabirds: Threats and Challenges. We’re delighted to welcome David back; he’s given us some outstanding bird talks in the past, so don’t miss out. This talk concentrates on the north-east Atlantic Ocean which is home to millions of seabirds; Britain and Ireland play host to some truly magnificent colonies. It describes methods of monitoring these birds and shows how changes in the numbers can sometimes be related to problems in the oceans themselves. David is an accomplished speaker and an enthusiastic ornithologist and natural historian. He helped to found the Department of Genetics at Nottingham University where he became Professor of Avian Genetics and specialised in evolutionary genetics. This meeting will be held in the Rural Learning Centre at the Idle Valley, North Road (A638), Retford DN22 8RQ on March 14 2019. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admission £2.50 includes refreshments.

Hi Everyone, How lovely to see the snowdrops popping their little heads out and at last we can focus on spring being around the corner. The Sanctuary is full to overflowing, however we have been really busy since Christmas watching dogs and cats go to their forever homes. We are taking care of some beautiful dogs and cats at the moment, so if you are looking for that special pet, young or old please come to see us. Our kennel carers are very knowledgeable and will let you know which dog they feel would be right for you. When someone adopts a dog from us, we ask that they come to our Dog Listener talk on a Saturday morning before taking their chosen dog home. This is especially helpful if you are a first-time dog owner but everyone finds this very helpful, even people that have had dogs all of their life find the talk is very informative. We are holding a table top sale in the Scout Headquarters on St Marys Road in Tickhill on the 6th April. Why not clear the clutter and help our Sanctuary. There will be a 50p entry, also cake, tea

and coffee available. Price for a table will be £12. Please call Janice if you wish to purchase a table on 07590 455340 she will be happy to help. On 17th May we are holding our Mayflower Red Carpet Ball at the Crown Hotel, Bawtry. This will be a grand affair so get out that posh frock and come and have some fun also raise money for a good cause too. Cocktail dress or Ball gown and black tie for the men.

Photo on the red carpet and drink on arrival, 3 course meal, live auction, dancing and disco until late. Why not come and join us, The Crown Hotel will be also doing special rates for overnight stays too. Tickets for the Ball are priced at £50, well worth a fantastic night out with food. Please call me on 07776 783242 to purchase tickets for the Ball. The number to call for the Sanctuary is 01302 711330.

Work Underway on State of the Art Pilgrims Galley Work has begun on transforming a redundant council building into a state of the art Pilgrims Gallery at Bassetlaw Museum in Retford giving visitors an opportunity to find out more about pilgrim Leaders William Brewster of Scrooby and William Bradford from Austerfield as well as the views of the native Americans they encountered in the New World.

CLASSIC CAR RALLY AT YE OLDE BELL

In January Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa once again hosted drivers taking part in the historic rally run to Monte Carlo. The hotel is an important control point in the rally, staged by the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). Drivers travel across Europe to make the 1500mile trip to the South of France. Hotel Manager, Kate Firth, commented:

We originally hosted the check point back in the 1950s so we are extremely proud that we were still able to play a small part in this amazing event in 2019. T

The Pilgrims Gallery is part of a £750,000 Heritage Lottery funded project which commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America in 1620. When completed, the Gallery will feature a recreation of William Brewster’s study, where people can learn more about the life of Brewster who lived at Scrooby Manor and worshipped at nearby St Wilfrid’s Church. The Study part of the gallery will include a combination of high-tech digital elements including augmented reality film and more hands-on activities for children such as block printing and writing with a quill and ink, echoing Brewster’s history of running a printing press in Leiden, where he fled with his family after leaving Nottinghamshire in 1608 The gallery will also include interpretation panels highlighting the themes of Religious Tolerance, Freedom and Migration; challenges which are as relevant in today’s world as they were when the Separatists fought for the right to practice their beliefs in the early 17th century. The gallery is expected to be complete in late May 2019. Councillor Jo White, Deputy Leader of Bassetlaw District Council said: “We have worked really closely with the gallery designers to ensure that visitors of all ages find the experience fun, entertaining and thought-provoking. The fully staffed gallery will allow us to signpost visitors around Retford on a mini-Pilgrim trail and on to the surrounding villages where our Pilgrims lived and worshipped. I believe this will have a positive impact on our visitor economy and attract many new visitors to our area.” The Heritage Lottery Fund project ‘Pilgrim Roots’ also includes the upgrading of the existing Mayflower Trail with new interpretation at Babworth, Scrooby, Sturton-le-Steeple, Austerfield and Gainsborough; a new website which will inform visitors of an exciting events calendar associated with the Mayflower 400 anniversary in 2020 and the appointment of two additional members of staff, dedicated to improving the visitor experience and helping to tell the story of North Nottinghamshire’s Mayflower pilgrims to the rest of the world. Who Gives a Hoot?

A catch up from Wise Owl Nature is wonderful and my natural home is special. A SSSI no less. More later. The warmer sun is welcome and I feel lucky and unlucky in equal measure today. And why? From my perch I look and listen - and get to see and hear all sorts these days! What a scene of industrial filth 125m from my home. The vertical well at Misson Springs was spudded on 22 January. There will be drilling 24/7 for 110 days. If that isn't horror enough IGas is making a decision in the next month about also drilling the horizontal well straight away. Now, this gets serious and last night I couldn't help but notice a couple who live less than half a mile away hold each other close and say how anxious they are about their home, their water, their health - and mine! I treated them to my usual fly past but honestly, I'm anxious too. Devastated in fact. The Tinker Lane site has been plugged and abandoned. In time the company plans to return it to farmland. Too right they are. The farmland should never have been hijacked by this filthy industry. Lots more Humans are getting involved now they know the dangers. Traffic is being monitored on a rota at the gate DN10 6ET. Even a fire engine came, which is a bit of a mystery. As was the smoke. Locals were not informed of any details either. Shocking communications by the industry, I say. Brilliant communications from Notts Wildlife Trust. I'm in a special feature on their website. Take a look and discover why Misson Carr is SO special. The film is fab and the fight is on to save my rare and unique home. In haste, wifey needs me. Twit-twoo for now,

Wise Owl

IN THE GARDEN

Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), lovein-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.

them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Oldfashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening!

The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow

Bawtry Residents Group News At the January meeting of Bawtry Residents Group Councillor Alan Claypole chair of Bawtry Town Council provided an update to members on things that had happened at recent council meetings that affect Bawtry residents. At the BTC meeting on the 14th of January the Town Council heard from the treasurer of the Memorial Sports Ground (MSG) facility and Bawtry Action for Recreation and Sport (BARS) after they had requested some additional information at the December meeting. Following the additional information (a three-year financial plan) being provided and assurances that robust financial arrangements were now in place the Council agreed to pay BARS the sum of £8.5k for 2019. The BTC were also advised that the management structures were being reviewed by BARS/MSG User Groups and when this has been completed they would be liaising with BTC to seek agreement. Also discussed at this meeting was the refurbishment of the Market Hill car park and footpaths as outlined in the Neighbourhood Plan, it was estimated that the works would be in the region of £157,000. The first step would be to renew the Market Hill footpaths followed by the resurfacing of the car park including works to improve the area around the Market Cross. It is anticipated that all the works will completed within the next three years. At the BTC finance meeting on the 29th of January the Town Council agreed the budget for 2019/20, it also reluctantly agreed to increase the monies it raised from the precept from £36,000 to £50,000 an increase of 38%. This will result in an increase of around £10 per year for band D properties and brings the total increase over the past three years to a total of 81%. It was stated at the meeting that due to previous Councils not

40

increasing the precept for over ten years, Bawtrys low precept levels were no longer sustainable and that the Council being totally reliant upon the income from the car park was unacceptable. Furthermore, the Council forecast a deficit of £93,000 for the year 2019/20 with the shortfall being taken from the Council reserves of approximately £230,000. It was considered that such a large increase may have an impact on low income residents but only one Councillor voted against this level of increase and another one abstained. The Bawtry Residents Group would like to welcome Mr Ivor Greer as a new member of Bawtry Town Council, Ivor is an active member of our community. Bawtry Resident Group meeting attendees also received an update from Peter Burton the BARS treasurer. Peter outlined how the Memorial Sports Ground (MSG) was progressing and how Bawtry Action for Recreation and Sport (BARS) were hoping that the facility will move forward in the future, both in the structure of the facility in its size and especially the financial side. We were also informed that there are a number of internal areas of the building that need to be improved as they do not meet the requirements needed for the activities that they are wanting to host, namely the bar and the toilet facilities. The meeting was also advised that they had made a small profit last year which had enabled them to employ a Facilities Manager (Mrs J Dyer). The BRG chair on behalf of the group wished them every success for the future and hoped the facilities would continue to be well used and supported by residents. BARS have vacancies for Trustees and are seeking volunteers for the up-coming sports day. Anyone who would like to help out please contact phil.barsby@

intastop.com. Also at the BRG meeting local Ward Councillor Rachael Blake announced that Bawtry will now have a designated South Yorkshire Police Sargent and Police constable, Sgt Liam Walters and PC John Yorke who will both be based at Rossington police station, there contact details are:- Liam. Walters@southyorks.pnn.police.uk, and John.Yorke@southyorks.pnn. police.uk,. The meeting was also advised that Peter Bentley who did so much to set up the Neighbourhood scheme had moved away from Bawtry but Mr Jerry Cooke had agreed to take over as the coordinator for the Bawtry Neighbourhood watch network scheme, Jerry can be contacted at bedford@btconnect.com. Unfortunately, due to the recent increase in crime in our town the scheme is looking for additional members from all over Bawtry. Please consider joining the scheme and supporting your community, together we can make a difference. As of the 1st of May, the New Hall passes back into the hands of Bawtry Town Council to manage on behalf of the residents. The New Hall as it is known has been run by a Management Committee (volunteers) and the BRG would like to thank them for all the years they have put into running the New Hall. A working group has been set up for the smooth transition from the Management Committee to the Council, any groups seeking further information please contact any member of the Council or the Clerk to the BTC, contact details on the council web page. http://bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk/contact-us/ The next BRG meeting is scheduled for 28th March 2019, 7:30 pm in the Crown Hotel. Bawtry Town Council - March 2019 Precept At the Town Council January Finance Meeting an increase was agreed to the Bawtry precept income. The precept is the element of Council Tax that is payable to Parish and Town Councils. This income is used to fund Town Council services. Historically the Bawtry precept level has been one of the lowest in the district. The present Town Council has the view that a policy of reliance upon car park revenue is fundamentally flawed; it makes us financially dependent upon a process that aggravates residents, retailers and ultimately deters visitors. The Town Council are progressing several large projects. The relocation of the town’s War Memorial, refurbishment of Market Hill and the running of its business from the New Hall. These projects require significant levels of investment from the Town Council. Although the Town Council has cash reserves, we have to ensure these remain at a reasonable level in order to meet our obligations to services and staff. The current Market Hill car park contract expires in approximately 2 and a half year’s time. If parking charges and charging hours are to be reviewed this may also result in a reduction of income to the Town Council. Two years ago, the Town Council made a start to increase its income from the precept with a small increase of 10%, a much bigger increase last year of 33% and an increase this year of 38% – however the precept has been at such a low base that this means an average “Band D” Council Tax payer will only pay an extra £10.19 this year, or an additional 19p per week. A balance between the precept and routine expenditure will take several more years to achieve.

New Hall With the New Hall lease coming to an end the Council, as owner of the building, will deliver their services from the facility from 1st May 2019. The Council has still to finalise its plans for the hall but expect existing groups to continue to hire the hall and offer residents a range of community activities. The Hall will also be available for one off events with the Council shortly to consider the appointment of new staff to run the facility together with a review of existing licencing arrangements to assess the variety of services that can be offered in the future. It is also hoped that in the medium term the facility can be refurbished to bring it up to a more modern standard. If you are interested in hiring the hall, in the first instance please contact Angela Harrison. Clerk to the Council at bawtrytowncouncil@ gmail.com or on 07494 893954 Events The Council is currently looking to support a “Soap Box Rally” event on Market Hill on Sunday 30th June. Further details will be forthcoming in due course. War Memorial The Council has now finalised its plans for the war memorial relocation to the Bawtry Library site with the planning department. A grant has been obtained from DMBC to fund the majority of the works and it is hoped that the re-siting will go ahead in May 2019. subject to traffic management being arranged. Meetings The next general Council meeting is on Tuesday 12th March at 7.00pm. Residents & Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings. There is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council during the meeting. Please come along & get involved.

Update from Councillors Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper

COMMUNITY

Your DMBC Councillors

Next Litter pick – 10am – 2 March at Tickhill Road Layby – everyone welcome Unfortunately the last litter pick had to be cancelled due to the snow but we will be holding the next one on March 2nd. The April one will be as part of the Keep Britain Tidy month of action so it would be great to have lots of volunteers at this one so we can cover the whole of Bawtry and Austerfield. We hope you find the updates of what is happening across the ward useful – please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to find out more about any of the issues mentioned and if there is something that we should be dealing with that you don’t think we are. As Rachael explained at the last Residents Group meeting, a role of a ward councillor includes very different roles – community leadership – working with others to improve the ward; dealing with individual complaints and concerns that residents have and representing residents at Doncaster council meetings to ensure our ward receives the services that it needs. Improving the appearance of our town A couple of weeks ago Rachael went out with the Street scene manager to highlight areas of concern that she had noticed or residents raised. Bawtry Hall One the areas that we are delighted has finally been completed after months of asking is the approach into Bawtry from the south and the improvements at Bawtry Hall. When we found out that they were cutting the trees back following the required permissions due to a preservation order we asked them to attend to the verges as well as the trees and we did ask if signs could be cleaned as well. It does look a lot better and I am aware that the Town Council is looking into a low maintenance scheme to keep it looking good throughout the year. Tickhill Road This weeds and leaves were cleared along the wall improving the area and street scene are aware of the need to clear the leaves from the other side. Overhanging bushes between Austerfield and Bawtry This was added to the list for street scene to cut back along with the hedge opposite the library. Also the litter on the Great North Road that the litter pick volunteers can’t get to was also included. We have asked for Bawtry and Austerfield to be included in future action days that DMBC organise when we could get lots of areas tackled at one time.

at the airport. The encroachment team have visited the business and action is being taken to prevent the mud and sand coming onto the road. We are having ongoing discussions with Doncaster Council about the airport problems as well as the lorries that are parked overnight. Speeding in Austerfield A number of residents have raised concerns about this and the Highways officer and the police have agreed to attend a meeting which is being planned for early March. For further details please contact Rachael or look at the Austerfield Parish Council Facebook site. Health and Well Being event Improving health and well-being for all ages is something that a number of organisations are working together to do. Rachael in her Cabinet responsibilities for Adults and Well-Being also Chair’s Doncaster’s Health and Well Being board and from talking to other Chairs across the country some areas of the country have started their own health and wellbeing group based on a small area such as Bawtry and Austerfield. An event was held on 22 February to hear people’s views on what they would like to see, but it’s not too late to get involved. If you have ideas that you would like to see or want to be part of the Health and Well Being Group please contact Rachael. Airport A meeting was held in February – an update from the meeting will be in the April update. Please get in touch with us if we canassist in any way. January and February saw 9 of our swimmers compete at the Nottinghamshire County Championships (some pictured below). They did amazingly well including many personal bests, making the finals, progressing up the County rankings and also achieving times that qualify them already for the County Championship in 2020. One of our swimmers also achieved times which will see him compete at the Regional Championships in May.

Dear Friends, Everybody goes through difficult times in one’s lifetime. For some, it can be loss of a loved one, a job or a relationship. For others, it can be an event that has broken them over the years and hence, make not to move on.

Talking of events that can break people, I am reminded of the Old Testament stories of the Israelites in exile. God had promised to be with them in a covenant relationship by loving, blessing and protecting them. As part of that relationship, the Israelites promised to love God by obeying his laws and being good to each other and their neighbours. However, the Israelites broke their promises many times, generation after generation. God was very patient with them and warned them through his prophets that if they carried on with their disobedience, a day of reckoning would come when they would have to bear the consequences of their actions. It happened that God allowed them to be overran by the Babylonians and they were shipped into exile in Babylon. In exile, the Israelites were disappointed because they could not relate with God as before. Although God was still present in their lives and even went on to encourage them to live their lives in the normal situation, their disappointments overshadowed their faith in God. They even went further to accused God of not loving them. Isaiah 49: 14 states, ‘But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.”

In the Old Testament days, a tattoo was a permanent mark and would never disappear. In other words, God is saying to you that you may feel insignificant, unloved, lonely, etc. but in God’s eyes, you are important, very important. He sees you every day and thinks about you every day of your life. He remembers you every day and wants to be part of your life. I wonder if you can take the trouble to trust him and tell him of what you think of the situation in which you are in now. That is also called prayer. You know what, God heard the cries of the Israelites, but it took about seventy years for God to lead the Israelites back from exile into Jerusalem. In your prayers, the answer may not be instant, but he is with you and he will carry through your situation. It may feel like seventy years, but remember, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Stay positive in your struggles and continue to trust the God who will never forget you. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough & Tickhill

There are times in our life situations that we feel like being forsaken. As a Minister, I have heard it many times when people ask the question, “where was God when …” It is okay to feel forsaken especially when you feel or think that the situation in which you find yourself is not your fault. However, I wonder if in your accusations or complaints, you have given God a chance to respond. The following was God’s response to the Israelites (Isaiah 49 15 – 16): “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.

music festival

Like Christmas and Valentine, Mothering Sunday has become a commercial issue in the western world. I am not saying that we should not be grateful to our mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and so on. They are very important part of our family lives. However, for some people, Mothering Sunday is a difficult time in their lives especially when they have been through rough times by not having a mother figure in their lives. Sometimes, going through life situations can be like not having a mother figure in your life – forgotten, lonely, unloved, rejected, unprotected, forsaken, frustrated, and so on. But God has an answer for you in your questions – your mother may have forgotten about you, but I will not think of forgetting you. His reason is that he has tattooed you on his palms.

Police Report The Central Neighbourhood Team has gained an additional sergeant this month in the shape of PS Liam Walters. Liam joins us from response and will be based at Rossington Police station. Any issues or concerns you may have in your local area please contact Liam by email at Liam.Walters@southyorks. pnn.police.uk or check out the events page on SYP website for details of your next community drop in. Activity in the last month has comprised of a number of speed operations as a result of complaints raised from members of the public. On Bawtry Road we checked 44 vehicles and 5 were found to be exceeding the limit. On West End Lane over 200 vehicles were checked and a number found to be exceeding will be dealt with accordingly. In response to intelligence from the local community a drugs warrant was executed at Coronach Way. A quantity of cocaine and cash was recovered. The occupant was arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs. Please report anything suspicious to your local neighbourhood officer or contact crime stoppers if you wish to remain anonymous. Crime reported to us this month has consisted of 2 outbuildings broken into

GOLF - WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE? and 3 residential burglaries. 1 crime where there were no signs of forced entry but keys were stolen and the car taken from drive. At another address 2 males were disturbed by the occupant when they forced the back door and walked into the kitchen, they left without stealing anything. And finally a report of the occupant returning home to disturb 2 males who again left without stealing any property. There were 7 theft from vehicles reported, unusual that 3 of these involved theft of vehicle parts, registration plates, mirrors, and a bonnet? There were also 3 vehicles stolen in the area this month all of which have been recovered. Please ensure that you leave vehicles and property locked securely even when you are at home. Don’t leave valuables on display and don’t leave car keys in a visible location. Thank you. For details of all our meetings please check out our Facebook page at DoncasterCentral NHP or our list of events on our website www.southyorks. police.uk where you will also find contact details for all the Central Neighbourhood staff. So people don’t want to play golf as much as they used to. Cost, shortage of time and the perception of golf as stuffy are some of the reasons. All perfectly understandable in these hectic times. If you’re busy then spending 4 hours or more at golf is not easy to do, and to join a golf club is expensive if you only play occasionally. As for the stuffiness, well yes it used to be but now we understand that players don’t want to be told what to wear and how to behave. So a lot of golf clubs are looking to break down all of these issues and make golf fun, reasonably priced and played over the length of time people can spare. We’re on a bit of a crusade to get the love back into the game. There are particular initiatives to get girls into the game through GirlsGolfRocks and Academies to get boys and girls to start as soon as they’re able to hold a club. Just think of the health and wellbeing benefits. Out in the fresh air, chatting and joking with your playing partners, having a good walk and challenging yourself against obstacles like trees, water, sand and on our course, squirrels galore! Then afterwards maybe having a drink and bite to eat looking out over the beautiful course. You don’t have to be good, or young, or rich, or anything. You don’t have to be competitive although there are competitions for those who are. So, no matter what age or level of ability you are, come along and have a game. There are plenty of golf courses around here. I represent the lovely, tranquil course that is part of Serlby Park Estate and we’d love you to come and visit us. Find us online at www.serlbypark.co.uk or ring 01777 818268 and talk to Dave or Stuart.
