Another school year is coming to an end, and another set of young people are heading towards a change of nursery/school/ college/apprenticeship/further education/ employment. Leaving the place that they will have hopefully been very happy for many years can be a sad time for both children and their parents but it is also a positive time when we can look forward to what is to come and the new opportunities available. Whatever change you or your loved ones may be facing over the coming months, I hope it will be a change for the better. The August issue will be delivered to you late July. Ann is 69 and lives alone in Doncaster. Ann has always been a very sociable person and thrives when she is surrounded by people. When we met Ann in January she was bereaved, depressed and would go days without seeing anyone. Research carried out by Age UK in 2016 highlights that half a million older people JR DW OHDVW Č´ YH RU VL[ GD\V D ZHHN ZLWKRXW seeing or speaking to anyone at all. Circles are putting a stop to this by supporting people to get out more and make new connections. Each Circle has a clear purpose that connects a person to something they are passionate about. Ann’s purpose was to ‘Join a group and meet new people’. Ann was matched with our volunteer Joan who introduced her to a social group at Bentley Library, which she now attends every week. ‘I feel miles better now; I have Joan, my volunteer and I have something to look forward WR HYHU\ ZHHN ȇ $QQ LV QRZ YROXQWHHULQJ KHUVHOI on the project and supporting other people to make new connections in their community. <RX GRQȇW QHHG WR KDYH VSHFLČ´ F HGXFDWLRQ RU skills to volunteer. George J Johnson There are times when exhibitions leave you amazed and in awe at the skill and ability of the artist or craftsman and the Glass show at the Harley is one of those. You have another couple of weeks to catch this exhibition and every piece of work in this group exhibition, which has been put together by the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, demonstrates what a mysterious and dextrous material glass is. Really interesting. However the Lithopane show, also at the Harley, (Dear Reader, you will perhaps remember that I mentioned this new word ‘Lithopane’ a couple of months ago) was a huge disappointment and demonstrated that it doesn’t matter how much you dress up your art-practice technology in fancy language (and the particular technology involved here was as basic as industrial ceramic printing which you will find on the mug from which you are now drinking your tea) if the artwork is no more interesting than a snap shot, then that’s it – it’s just a snap shot. I have it on several good authorities, and by the time you will read this, I too will have been, that the big summer show GUISEPPE PENONE at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is terrific. Take a picnic, make a day of it. Misson & Springs WI “For a moment I thought it was going to be dullâ€? - Helen Mirren’s back row jibe in the Č´ OP &DOHQGDU *LUOV KDV WRR often been unfairly applied to WI talks, but we can honestly say that here in Misson we KDYH DOPRVW QHYHU IRXQG RXU speakers to be anything other than interesting, well-prepared and informative. So, it was that, yet again, at our May meeting, we went away having learned so much from our guest, Andy Wilson from Yorkshire Cancer Research. Cancer is a subject which has touched everyone of us in some way or another, yet even members for whom it is still a recent and raw experience commented positively on Andy’s talk. As with all the best presentations, it had an opening which attracted our attention and drew us in - and from then on, we were caught up in the brief history of the organisation and the steps which are now being taken to ensure that the 40% of cancers which

are avoidable are prevented. Unfortunately, Yorkshire has D YHU\ PL[HG SURČ´ OH ZLWK some areas doing well, while in other parts of the county there is still too much needless VXÎ? Hello from the Mayflower Sanctuary Bawtry,

Finding a forever home

At last summer is with us and we can all enjoy al fresco dining with friends. It is also a time that we at the Sanctuary are able to make the most of our fundraising. We have a couple of events pending and I hope that you are able to join us and have fun in the sun. The last Sunday in every month we hold a Table Top Sale in reception where there are lots of bargains to be had this starts at 10 am. The 1st July is our annual dog show at Tithes Lane in Tickhill this starts at 11am there are lots of classes to suit any dog large or small rescue or not, it is the taking part that matters. There will also be lots of stall and a BBQ. Don’t forget to bring your rug or picnic chair and enjoy your day. If you are not able to make that date we have something special for you on 29th July start time is 12pm Summer Fayre at the Mayflower. There will be stalls, BBQ , raffle, we also have a kennel assistant that is a green fingered wiz so his plant stall as last year will be amazing. This year is our Sanctuaries 15th year Anniversary and we are hoping to have a special event to commemorate this, so watch this space. We would now like to do some thank you’s to everyone that made our Mayflower Ball a huge success, starting with The Crown Hotel Bawtry. The food and service were amazing as was the resident DJ, who went that one step further and helped us dance the night away until the early hours. Lee Maddison played guitar keeping everyone entertained through dinner.

Sunil was our auctioneer for the evening and did an amazing job. We are all excitedly waiting to see the photos in Eastside Magazine and thank you to the girls from Eastside for attending. Big thank you to everyone that bought tickets and made the night special. Misson Pre School Misson pre school are exploring the vastness of the oceans this term, by studying “The Snail And The Whaleâ€? and “The Rainbow Fishâ€?. BAWTRY WI Bollywood meets Bawtry – that was the theme of our Indian evening and it was great fun learning about the colourful and exuberant style of dance we have VHHQ LQ Č´ OPV VXFK DV Ȇ6OXPGRJ Millionaire’. Our guide was Nisha Lall who grew up with Indian dance and has developed classes that she teaches to a wide variety of people, both young and old. 6KH H[SODLQHG WKDW HDFK GLÎ? HUHQW area of India has its own style of dancing and demonstrated some of these styles, including Traditional and Bollywood which KDV JURZQ RXW RI WKH ΖQGLDQ Č´ OP industry. It was fascinating to hear about how graceful hand movements and gestures can convey the emotions and story of the dance. Of course after the demonstration, we all got up to have a go ourselves – we realized that it was much harder than Nisha made it look. She was an excellent teacher and we had fun mastering a short routine though it’s unlikely Bollywood ZLOO EH FDOOLQJ XV DQ\WLPH VRRQ After our exertions, we were glad to sit down and enjoy our Indian style refreshments ZKLFK LQFOXGHG WZR GLÎ? HUHQW types of curry, rice, naan bread, poppadoms and a variety of Indian snacks such as pakora, samosas and onion bahjis. We all agreed it was a really enjoyable evening. Feeling Fruity? Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry WKH VSDFH LV WRR VPDOO RU LW ZRQÂśW ORRN SUHWW\ RU LWÂśV WRR GLIÂż FXOW" What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even Âż JV RU QHFWDULQHV" 7KH Âż UVW WKLQJ \RX QHHG WR NQRZ LV WKDW WKH sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it’s an ideal place to WUDLQ D VXQ ORYLQJ IUXLW WUHH OLNH D SHDFK RU DQ apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or ‘fanning’ is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also KDV WKH EHQHÂż W RI EHLQJ D JUHDW VSDFH VDYHU Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite morello cherries. Most of these come in

compact varieties and can also be fan-trained against a wall if space is an issue. I have a tiny orchard of minarettes - spacesaving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 6 feet / 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! 6LPSO\ FXW EDFN WKH VLGH VWHPV WR DERXW FP at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally RQ \RX IRU WKHLU IRRG DQG ZDWHU 7KLFN JOD]HG non-porous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold. Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, EXW , UHDOLVHG TXLFNO\ WKDW LW EHFRPHV DQ addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus ,œYH QRWLFHG D GH¿ QLWH LQFUHDVH LQ P\ EHH population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could EH EHWWHU"

Thank the Judas in your life

Dear Friends, I wonder if I can use this month to continue to talk about the Lent Course I participated LQ 6KHÉ? HOG WKLV \HDU At the penultimate session, we discussed, “The mission of Judasâ€?. To be honest, it ZDV D YHU\ GLÉ? FXOW VHVVLRQ for me. However, I found out some pearls of truth which I had not thought about. I came out of the session thinking, “well, if Judas had not betrayed Jesus, what would have happened to my VLQV"Č‹ ČŠ+RZ ZRXOG -HVXV KDYH ended up on the tree on Good )ULGD\"Č‹ 6RPHRQH ZRXOG respond by saying that God would have found a ‘plan B’. But I wonder if ‘plan B’ would have been the best for us. Judas sold his boss for a few pieces of silver. Yes, that is not acceptable in any circumstance. On the other hand, I realised that Jesus needed Judas Iscariot’s schemes as part of his mission on earth – to save us from our sins. Here is now the take. Each one of us may have a Judas in our lives. It could be in your workplace, social network, church, leisure or family life. There can be someone who would be a ‘thorn in your Čľ HVKȇ %XW Ζ ZRQGHU LI \RX have realised that this person has been placed there to challenge you and possibly, help bring out the best in you. out abuse of any form. That is not acceptable and must be dealt with. Rather, it could be the one who criticises your every move. For instance, s/ he is never appreciative of what you do or say. Or, s/ he complains about your work or even sometimes, the grammar in your speech or reports. Sometimes, it could be a betrayal by your partner of friend. I wonder if you have considered forgiving that person for making your life ‘like hell’. Secondly, I wonder if you can go an extra mile by thanking that person for making you who you are. It is GLÉ? His reason was that they did not know what they were doing. I begin this month’s article with a brief resume of the main crimes of interest, which have occurred in Bawtry and $XVWHUČ´ HOG EHWZHHQ WK 0D\ DQG WK -XQH 3OHDVH QRWH the crimes I have mentioned EHORZ GR QRW UHČľ HFW DOO FULPH which has taken place, but are those which I believe will be of more interest to readers. In Bawtry, we recorded two residential burglaries. In both incidents, the occupant’s cars were stolen. Both cars were later recovered and in one case a suspect arrested who is current released under investigation. We also recorded one commercial burglary. Furthermore, we recorded three theft from cars. In one of these cases, an insecure car was searched, whilst items were WDNHQ RÎ? WKH EDFN RI DQRWKHU vehicle. In the third crime, the car number plates were stolen. This type of incident is common across the country and they are stolen for a variety of reasons. However, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to this type of crime by purchasing anti tamper screws, which work on a similar principal to locking wheel nuts and come with VSHFLDO KHDGV WR Č´ W WKHP Overall, crime levels remain VWDWLF DQG Ζ KDYH QRW LGHQWLČ´ HG DQ\ VLJQLČ´ FDQW HPHUJLQJ WUHQGV or issues to mention. I also wanted to mention just a few other things; Last month, I highlighted the issue of young people swimming in our local rivers and canals. I just wanted to remind readers about this, particularly in view of the warmer weather ZH KDYH EHHQ HQMR\LQJ 3OHDVH remind young people they should not go swimming in these locations. It is also a good time to remember to keep \RXU JURXQG Čľ RRU ZLQGRZV and doors closed and locked during the warmer weather. I also wanted to inform readers that we conducted RXU Č´ UVW VSHHG HQIRUFHPHQW operation a few weeks ago XVLQJ RÉ? FHUV IURP P\ WHDP 7KH\ YLVLWHG $XVWHUČ´ HOG ZKLFK led to a number of verbal warnings being issued and some people being dealt with for speeding. We received positive feedback from a number of local residents.

Complaints of speeding are common across the district and we have a number of areas to visit, but we will visit Bawtry as soon as possible. In last month’s article, I mentioned that I was looking DW LQWURGXFLQJ D Ȇ3DUWQHUV and Communities Together 0HHWLQJVȇ 3$&7V ZKLFK ZLOO cover the Tickhill, Bawtry and surrounding areas. Misson Quary Walk Misson Community Association organised a walk and talk in May with Hanson’s Quarries and 3ULQFLSOH $UFKLWHFW -RKQ ΖQJKDP WR OHDUQ PRUH DERXW how long it takes to extract sand and gravel. The weather was mostly kind on the day, but a little too wet to walk all the way round the reed beds, but despite that and with provided maps to hand, we all learnt so much more about the restoration of the quarry to create a wildlife environment for the future, of which Hanson’s will be the caretakers for years to come. Once completed in 2019, it will attract birds of conservation concern including curlew, redshank, snipe and bittern. Also, the now rare water vole will hopefully be attracted to the area along with otters. Firstly, I would like to say what a pleasure it was to receive Dr Alan Billings the south Yorkshire police and crime commissioner at the last BRG meeting and his assistant Tracy Webster, Dr Billings gave an insight to the residents in attendance what a very busy, interactive life this gentleman leads. Bawtry Town Council - July 2018 Martin Grange Planning Proposal Although in the early stages, Bawtry Town Council was recently approached by property developers who were seeking Council support to develop an area of Martin Grange to provide 160 houses in Bawtry. In return, additional recreational facilities would be provided on part of the site. The Council considered the proposals and appreciated the opportunity to consider the designs at this initial stage. Ultimately however the Council were not able to support the plans due to the area being designated as green belt by DMBC.

The Council still hope the relocation can be undertaken by November 2018, before the next remembrance event, but equally are mindful that it’s more important that the relocation is undertaken correctly and without causing damage to the memorial, which is listed. This must take precedence over any time pressures.

Highways

Speeding through the town is a long-standing problem in Bawtry. DMBC appear resistant to changes to the current speed limit or to providing It’s always a difficult decision to balance the benefits permanent interactive speed signs. The Friends of Doncaster Museums This is an exciting time as Doncaster progresses an ambitious new project to develop a multipurpose cultural hub alongside the existing museum on Chequer Road. The new space will incorporate many of the features of the existing building whilst freeing up the 1964 museum as a study centre and research space. The Friends of Doncaster Museums are a group of people drawn from across the borough who meet on a regular basis throughout the year to enjoy a varied programme of talks and visits. We also raise funds which can be used to support acquisitions to the collection at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery and also at Cusworth Hall. We have just held our Annual General Meeting where we reviewed a very successful year. Our GRQDWLRQbKHOSHG VHFXUH D ODUJH Lottery Fund Grant which meant that the Medieval Conisbrough Court Rolls were acquired by the Archive Service and by part funding the conservation of three Brazilian paintings donated to the museum after

the Second World War, we attracted a large anonymous donation followed by funding by the Brazilian Embassy in London which ensured they could be included in a major exhibition in the capital. Looking forward, we have an exciting and varied programme over the next year with guest speakers including our own *HUYDVH 3KLQQ WKH UHQRZQHG Egyptologist Joann Fletcher and the Co-Chief Curator of +LVWRULF 5R\DO 3DODFHV DXWKRU and broadcaster Tracy Borman. We have also committed to raise the funds to pay the subscription of Heritage Doncaster to the Contemporary Arts Society and to celebrate WKH WKbDQQLYHUVDU\ RI WKH Č´ UVW moon landing we are booking a mobile planetarium to be at the museum for a day during National Science Week.
