AUTUMN CONFERENCE 2012

‘The Future of the Brain and the Brain of the Future: How modern technology is changing the way we think and feel’

Th Nov urs 15t em h at T ber 201 he V 2 Hot ale el

Key n Spe ote ake r

Baroness Susan Greenfield What effect are technologies such as computer games, the Internet and social media having on the brain? The primary focus of Baroness Greenfield’s work explores and questions the impact of modern screen technologies on the human brain. Today’s screen technologies create environments that could alter how we process information, the degree to which we take risks, how we socialise and empathise with others and even, how we view our own identity. Susan is fascinated as to how screen technologies such as computer games, the Internet and social media may be changing the human brain, both for good and bad. She will illustrate the potential of generations merging and explore the effects of gaming, social media and interaction along with the difference between the under function and active function of the prefrontal cortex found in our brains. Humans occupy more ecological niches than any other species on the planet, because of the superlative ability of our brains to adapt to their environment.

10

Is ‘Mind Change’ the new ‘Climate Change’? During her key note address, Baroness Greenfield will be delving into the human mind, and looking at the technology of the 21st Century. She will explore and explain the possible effects of ICT, biotechnology and nanotechnology. • How is technology changing the way we interact with others? • Do we have more/less empathy as a result and what are the consequences? • Are our IQs increasing/decreasing and does this equate to more in depth, or

simply ‘surface’ understanding?

• What are the implications for teaching and learning in schools and across

generations?

Baroness Susan Greenfield Baroness Susan Greenfield is a Professor of Pharmacology at Oxford University, writer, broadcaster and member of the House of Lords. The old adage ‘everyone remembers a good teacher’ applies very strongly in Susan’s case and while at school she pulled out all the intellectual stops, eventually gaining a place at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, to read Psychology and Philosophy. It was there she became increasingly fascinated by the physiology of the brain and developed an interest for the application of the big philosophical problems such as identity and consciousness, in the context of neuroscience. Specialising in the physiology of the brain, Susan researches the impact of 21st Century technologies on the mind and explores how the brain generates consciousness. Her work also covers novel approaches to understanding and treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. We are delighted to welcome Baroness Greenfield as our Key Note Speaker to the conference. ‘Susan Greenfield is often described as the foremost female scientist in Britain, but she is one of the best of any gender, anywhere, at getting complicated ideas across’ (Independent on Sunday) ‘Susan Greenfield enthrals and intrigues her audiences in equal measure . . . a force of intellect and a force of nature’ (John Humphrys)

LOOKING AHEAD ‘Platitudes, Posturing and Pretence’ Roy Leighton During the second part of our conference Roy Leighton will be considering how creativity, motivation, learning styles and value creation are all impacted by the world and context in which we live. He will ask the challenging questions: ‘How does your school provide the environment where every child and member of staff matter?’ ‘Do you, your team and the children go beyond platitudes, posturing and pretence?’ Roy’s session will draw together the strands that thread through brain compatible learning, emotional literacy and the challenges inherent in delivering a broad and balanced curriculum, all set against the backdrop of the habitual practice of schools being target focused. He will explore the nature of the demands made on school leaders, alongside the ripple effect that they have on the ‘school’s family’ in both the short and longer term.

Roy Leighton Roy Leighton has worked in Education for many years with the whole range of sectors from the disaffected to the supremely able - that is for teachers as well as children! Roy is known not only for his work in schools but also as a star of stage and screen in his own right including the BBC TV programme Confidence Lab. His background is originally in the Arts and he now works in the UK and Europe as a consultant for Independent Thinking. Roy is passionate about empowering people to develop true innovation and balance within the school He is renowned for being one of the most inspiring speakers in education today, not only because of the genuinely useful and practical nature of his advice for schools but also because he talks to an audience as real life, living, loving human beings. Be prepared to be humbled, moved and inspired!

We are delighted to welcome Roy to our Conference Programme In the words of one delegate; ‘He should be bottled and consumed regularly!’

Summer 2012 Listening to Learners The Mosaic Approach

Bac k pop by ular dem upd and & ated !

The Estyn Framework requires that every child and young person in Wales is listened to, treated with respect and is included in decision making. (KQ 1.2.3 and KQ 3.2.1) How does this translate to the school setting? How can children’s views and experiences become the focus for reviewing the quality of our provision and practice? This course outlines a framework, The Mosaic Approach, for listening to, and consulting children on their perspectives with regard to their daily lives and school experience. The Mosaic Approach is a multi-method approach in which children’s own photographs, tours and maps can be connected with other forms of assessment to gain deeper understanding of children’s perspectives. It also has massive potential as a tool to use with older children, particularly those with communication difficulties or for whom English is an additional language. Course participants will have the opportunity to: • Consider what ‘consultation’ with children looks like and how best to listen to learners • Reflect on how listening to children directly links to recognising and addressing the needs and interest of learners within the Foundation Phase and beyond • Explore the direct benefits of consultation with children within schools and settings • Reflect on the principles that underpin consultation with children and how this can be used to develop units of enquiry within the Foundation Phase and beyond • Deliberate on the possible barriers to effectively consulting with children • Explore practical methods that can be used to consult with children from birth to eleven years and pick up helpful tips along the way! NEW Ornament or Evidence? Using portfolios to showcase and evidence your school’s success Showcasing your school through portfolios is a potent way of proving and exemplifying the good work that goes on. Portfolios can be used for a range of purposes and audiences, and can be accessed on many levels. The task of collecting and collating meaningful evidence is onerous and we can run the risk of producing little more than a ‘family album’. This course will highlight key features of the best portfolios and will give you a clear structure for proving that the quality of teaching and learning reflects the expected national standards. A real useful and thought provoking day! Course participants will have the opportunity to: • Consider the purpose and use of evidence collected within schools • Reflect on the needs of various audiences that are supported by portfolios • Develop strategies for gathering and exhibiting evidence • Share examples of effective portfolios that serve the needs of a variety of audiences • Gain clarity as to what should be included and what should be left out. • Leave the course buzzing with practical tips to get you started or move you forward

Speak Right, Think Write Developing Children’s Language Skills across the Curriculum ‘Reasoned Talk’ plays a vital role in all children’s language development. There is, however, a danger that it can be undervalued, with schools under pressure to get children writing as soon as possible. But as speech and language therapist Rosemary Sage has noted: ‘Many problems that children have with writing are because they are required to write at a level beyond which they can think and speak.’ In this course Paul Smith will give practical examples of the sorts of activities that can be used to encourage ‘reasoned talk’ across the curriculum. Course participants will have the opportunity to: • Explore ideas that enable children to play with language • Re-visit the key components of effective story telling • Develop routines for ‘thinking out loud’ and articulating thoughts clearly to others • Empower children to argue a case effectively and objectively • Help children to listen to, and consider, other points of view • Give children the tools to review and evaluate their original ideas to form a conclusion

Pace and Progress Using Assessment for Learning as a Key Driver to Success Adopting an appropriate pace has always been a core feature of high quality teaching and learning, but this is easier said than done when faced with a range of abilities and interests. Are we using ‘Assessment for Learning‘ to its full potential in identifying when we need to inject momentum and when we need to allow for reflection and thinking time? This course provides an opportunity to explore and develop key strategies around personalising learning so that the progress for each pupil is secured beyond a ‘race through the curriculum’. Course participants will have the opportunity to: • Consider at the planning stage how to build in opportunities for AfL • Identify key features and routines for differentiating learning and keeping pupils on track • Ensure that pupils are sharing the responsibility of ‘challenge and success’ by demonstrating their learning through co-operative tasks • Maintain momentum throughout a ‘Context for Learning’ by identifying the role of the adult at each point. When is support and focused teaching needed and when/how are pupils expected to conduct their learning more independently? • Be replenished with a bank of ideas to take back and use immediately

SUMMER CONFERENCE 2013

Child of Our Time Lord Robert Winston

Key n Spe ote ake r

Following the overwhelming success of our November 2011 Conference with Lord Robert Winston and Sue Palmer, we are delighted to offer our partner professionals in North Wales and the Noth West of England the opportunity to join us for this exciting repeat event. Lord Robert Winston is recognised as one of the most celebrated scientists of our era and Sue Palmer offers a wealth of experience on childhood and society. This is an opportunity not to be missed and a date for your diary! During our conference Professor Winston will be exploring aspects of his work with particular pertinence to the educational arena: ‘What Makes Me, Me.’ and ‘Are we Born or Are we Made?’ ‘Child of Our Time’ is a unique 20-year project following 25 children born in 2000 from birth to the age of 20. The children came from across the UK from a range of genetic, social, geographical and ethnic backgrounds. Through this landmark piece of research, as the children grow from infancy, through childhood and on to becoming young adults, Professor Winston, and his research team, build up a coherent and scientifically accurate picture of how the genes and the environments of growing children interact to make a fully formed adult. The research sets out to answer many unanswered questions; one of the most important questions that the project is seeking to answer is “Are we born or are we made?” “ ‘What Makes Me Me’ is all about the things that make you individually you, from the shape of your ears and the sound of your voice to the things that really scare you or make you laugh. Your genes, your personality, and your talents are all part of the story. Find out just what makes you you.” Robert Winston.

88

Taking key messages from these fascinating pieces of work, Robert Winston will explore how we, as educators, can take account of individual differences and positively influence the journey from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. The school experience really does matter!

Lord Robert Winston Lord Robert Winston, Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London, a university with one of the strongest international science bases, runs a research programme in the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology. He is also Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, Chairman of the Royal College of Music and was voted “Peer of the Year” by his fellow Parliamentarians in June 2008. He is a member of the Council of the University of Surrey. Professor Winston’s research led to the development of gynaecological microsurgery in the 1970s and various improvements in reproductive medicine, subsequently adopted internationally, particularly in the field of endocrinology and IVF. His work on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis enabled families carrying gene defects to have children free of fatal illnesses. This included techniques to help families with sex-linked disorders, single gene defects (such as cystic fibrosis) and chromosomal abnormalities - for example, those causing pregnancy loss. He is committed to scientific education and regularly writes or hosts popular science programmes for the BBC’s main channels and Discovery networks. Robert Winston’s activities in the House of Lords include speaking regularly on education, science, medicine and the arts. He was Chairman of the Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology 1999-2002 and vice-chairman of the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.

We are thrilled to welcome back Lord Robert Winston in our programme at The Learning Partnership.

LOOKING AHEAD Childhood Sue Palmer Sue Palmer will join Professor Winston at our conference. Sue is a renowned consultant specialising in child development and literacy. During our conference Sue will be exploring key themes from her work on Toxic Childhood and Detoxing Childhood. Sue will lead part of the day by considering contemporary childhood and the impact of our modern world on individuals. She offers insights into possible solutions to address some of the key concerns for educators. “The world may have changed beyond recognition in the last three decades, but children haven’t changed at all. For healthy development, they still need the same basic ingredients that have helped lucky children through the ages grow up bright, balanced and fit to face the challenges of adult life.” Sue Palmer

90

Sue Palmer Sue Palmer, a former headteacher in Scotland, has written and consulted widely on aspects of literacy and child development. For more than fifteen years she has been a popular speaker on these subjects in schools, colleges and universities in the UK and across the world, and a frequent contributor to the educational press, notably the Times Educational Supplement and Child Education. Her first book for wider audience, Toxic Childhood (Orion 2006) about the effects of contemporary childhood on child development and learning, was in the Amazon best-seller charts for two years. It was followed by Detoxing Childhood (2007) and 21st Century Boys (2009). The books have led to involvement in many campaigns related to modern childhood, and invitations to speak to a wide range of audiences, including health, social work and criminal justice professionals, playworkers, planners, advertisers and parents. They have also led to many articles and interviews in the national press, as well as frequent TV and radio appearances. Sue has acted over the years as an independent consultant to many organisations, including the Department for Education and Skills, the Basic Skills Agency, the National Literacy Trust and the BBC.

We are delighted to re-visit issues of Childhood with Sue in our Conference Programme.
