Birth to Five Let’s Get Talking! Finding time to talk in busy classrooms Children develop language by having something to talk about, someone to talk with, and someone to listen to them. In early years settings there is plenty to talk about, but our biggest challenge is finding time to talk with and listen to children, because there are so many of them, and so few of us! Throughout the day we will explore practical approaches to supporting talk in your setting. This course will enable practitioners to develop their ability to have meaningful conversations with children: to enhance their language, confidence, social skills and learning. Michael Jones will lead the day. Michael has a background in Speech and Language Therapy, teaching and supporting children with additional learning needs. He has written widely on the subject of early language development and led the Every Child a Talker (ECaT) project. Michael has a particular interest in developing the confidence of children who are very quiet. Course participants will have the opportunity to: •

Re-visit how children learn language, at home and in settings.

Connect with the power of conversation: talking about what children know, when we don’t know what they know.

Further develop small world play as a vehicle for supporting imagination and language.

See the powerful connection between language and mark making.

Enable children with communication difficulties to ‘speak for themselves’ using a variety of methods.

Devise ways and means of helping children to talk with each other.

Explore practical ways to make links between home and school.

Literacy and Numeracy Framework Day 2 - Literacy Co-ordinators The Role and Responsibilities of the Literacy Co-ordinator in the LNF Literacy co-ordinators have a central role in developing the LNF within the school’s curriculum. One aspect is to develop capacity within their current team by identifying need, supporting others, leading by example and sharing good practice. Other key elements explored through this course are centred on the strategic influence that the literacy co-ordinator role involves. Put simply, they are responsible for making it happen in the classroom - every classroom! This one day course takes a practical and realistic view of the steps to be taken in ensuring that the literacy strands are woven through the curriculum in a meaningful way to ensure impact and improve standards. If some of the anticipated benefits have not been realised through improving standards then it’s time to ask: • Is it because of resistance within my team? • Does my team need further support and development? • Are there pockets of teaching that need strengthening? • Is it a case of general reinforcement of practice? This course has a clear focus on finding out, through high quality monitoring, what is happening and why Course participants will have the opportunity to: •

Review and explore the key messages from the Welsh Government materials for monitoring and evaluating the LNF.

Consider how effective the current systems are for gathering information on individuals and groups of children within the school in line with the LNF’s expectations.

Explore ways of mapping progress and skill development to ensure better outcomes for cohorts of children.

Discuss issues of, and ways to address/develop, pockets of practice that are either of an exceptionally high standard or an area of concern.

Monitor the effectiveness of interventions currently being used against progress made.

Make connections with, and build, in next steps for the school’s strategic plans.

Literacy and Numeracy Framework Literacy and Numeracy Framework The Reading Strand Where does it say that? Reading for Meaning ‘I believe passionately that explicit teaching of comprehension strategies and inference skills is central to promoting children’s love of reading and personal learning from the early years upwards. When young children are shown how to ‘understand’ and make personal meaning of language and concepts for themselves - it provides them with a real purpose for reading and enables them to apply strategic tools for reading, learning and enquiry across the curriculum independently.’ Developing ‘Reading for meaning across the Curriculum’ is a priority for all schools in Wales. Donna Thomson’s training day will look at how this can be achieved through the power of reciprocal enquiry and strategic reading comprehension instruction. This course is packed with insights, practical tips and a clear strategy. This is a day not to be missed! Course participants will have the opportunity to: •

To reflect on current reading practice and the latest research.

To develop an understanding of comprehension and the reciprocal reading process.

To explore the explicit teaching of literal, inference and evaluative questioning to support reading and learning.

Literacy and Numeracy Framework Talk to Learn, Learn to Talk

‘With “dialogue” and “dialogic teaching” as buzz-words, we face a familiar mix of danger and opportunity. The opportunity is to transform classroom talk, increase pupil engagement, and lift literacy standards from their current plateau. The danger is that a powerful idea will be jargonised before it is even understood, let alone implemented, and that practice claiming to be “dialogic” will be little more than re-branded chalk and talk or ill-focused discussion.’ Robin Alexander We are delighted to welcome back Sarah Seleznyov, who will explore the place and power of thinking through talk within the classroom. There will be an opportunity to find out about strategies for talk that will transform the thinking power of children and the clear link with the LNF. Course participants will have the opportunity to: •

Literacy and Numeracy Framework Above and Beyond 2 More Able and Talented Mathematicians Provision for ‘more able and talented’ pupils can vary considerably from one school to the next. In schools where ‘more able and talented’ children seem to achieve particularly well, all pupils tend to achieve higher standards. This is partly because the teaching and learning strategies that have an impact on the ‘more able and talented’ child also improve standards for all children. (Estyn, HMI Wales) So, what are these teaching and learning strategies? How do we identify and cater for the needs of our ‘more able and talented’ mathematicians in school? During the day, we will attempt to explore these crucial questions and more! Course participants will have the opportunity to: •

Identify the qualities and abilities that the ‘more able and talented’ mathematicians possess.

Recognise that certain teaching and learning strategies which have a positive impact on ‘more able and talented’ also raise standards in general.

New Technologies Choose from.... App the Ads During this full day project children will plan a short advert about their school, their community or another agreed focus. The children will learn how to get the most out of commonly used apps to prepare and edit their own advert, as well as composing and recording a digital soundtrack. The advert can be for TV or radio and must convey a clear message within the strict time limit of 90 seconds. The content element of this project is so flexible that it can be used to reinforce personal safety messages, showcase key points of an imaginary or real product, or simply tell the world how great your school is! As part of the advertising campaign they will also be required to produce posters and other literature to support their product or message. The children will develop skills that they can go on and use in other projects as well as developing those key skills of collaborating in teams. Real life! Real learning!

Jingles and Jungles During this one day project, children will consider the elements that contribute to creating atmosphere and tension in film and television. The focus will be on soundtracks and sound effects and how these are created and captured. Key iconic film and television moments (suited to age and developmental level!) will be considered and critiqued. The next stage will be to take a film clip that has no sound, so that the children create a digital sound track to accompany it. They will learn how to create both sound effects and compose musical soundtracks to reflect the mood and atmosphere of the piece. They will explore how layers of sound build together within a piece and at the end of the project they will compare the different approaches used within the wider group. The day will culminate in sharing both the film pieces and the popcorn!

Show Time! A great day aimed at inspiring young documentary producers and film makers alike. The focus will be on creating themed projects with iMovie that can be produced, edited and shared on the iPad. We will cover everything from capturing significant video content using the built-in camera to inserting images that create professional looking short movies. We will explore some advanced techniques such as trimming, splitting, rotating, adjusting audio, adding sound effects, background music and much, much more so that you achieve a quality piece to be proud of.

New Technologies We will consider the ‘behind the scenes roles’ within film and documentary making and the skill set needed to succeed. The day will culminate in a scheduling task for a day’s ‘public’ viewing (your school/another class) during the following week. Each piece will require a brief outline, accurate timing, and continuity inserts to create a varied programme of viewing. Ties in perfectly with the LNF!

Present IT! None of us is as smart as all of us! Learn how to use Nearpod as a tool to connect thinking, learning and action in your classroom. This complete presentation solution eliminates the need for projectors, transmitting directly to individual hand-held devices. Create and control presentations, gather ideas from around the classroom, keep an eye on how ideas are developing and celebrate learning in its broadest sense. The day will enable you and the children to use Nearpod in the classroom. It gives you a clear framework for managing Nearpod accounts and enables you all to create some fantastic presentations of your combined, as well as individual, learning.

Author’s Chair Our reading habits are changing and being shaped by the availability of on-line, streamable book selections. The focus of this one day course is to enable the children you teach to develop and publish their own electronic books. Develop an e-library for your own class and draw on the budding authors you teach. Closely aligning with the intentions of the LNF, Book Creator for iPad enables you to create your own e-books using images, text, video as and audio recordings. The e-books can be arranged in different formats to suit your children’s needs, with each page including pictures and videos from the camera roll, iTune library or elsewhere. Add your own text to your book to explain, tell stores, share experiences and simply delight your readers. Once the skills for using Book Creator are mastered, you will see unlimited potential for acquiring, caprtuing and embedding the skills from the LNF. Book Creator is an ideal way of displaying and sharing all text types, including fiction in a ‘book format’ on the iPad. The day will culminate in paired and shared reading from your group’s new ‘e-library’.

Above and Beyond More Able and Talented Mathematicians Provision for ‘more able and talented’ pupils can vary considerably from one school to the next.

Explore tasks that enable ‘more able and talented’ pupils to extend their enquiry skills and provide an outlet for creative abilities.
