S O C I A L D I S TA N C E D I S From our Leadership AND SOCIAL JUSTICE 3

Dear friends;

This past year has been the most transformative in ETM’s nearly 30-year history. To start, we had our largest number of partner schools in our history: 70 partnerships, plus an early childhood care pilot. Through these school partnerships, we provided access to high-quality music education to 36,000 partner school students.

D I S TA N C E L E A R N I N G Our evolution continued as the globe entered one of its darkest hours. As COVID-19 emptied schools, silenced classrooms, and forced students and their families into isolation, we remained determined to ensure that our mission to pursue equity and provide access to music education would not be affected.

S O C I A L D I S TA N C E D I S Thanks to our team’s tenacity, including our endlessly creative teachers, we were prepared for remote learning even before schools closed. Because of this foresight, we provided essentially uninterrupted service to our partner schools via remote distance learning. To date, our library of on-demand music lessons includes over 100 videos. What’s more, we contributed music lessons to local television station BronxNet, whose TV viewership includes over 300,000 Bronx families. And we provided video music lessons to WNET’s TV program “Let’s Learn NYC,” providing high-quality music education to students way beyond our partner schools.

AND SOCIAL JUSTICE As social justice demonstrations and calls for social change erupted across the nation this summer, we looked inward, finding ways to fight inequity, amplify diverse voices, and join the fight for social justice. As part of this endeavor, we are committed to addressing unconscious bias within our organization and implementing structures and systems that support true diversity, equity, and inclusion. Early efforts have already led to better processes, greater transparency, and–perhaps most importantly–culturally responsive and anti-racist teaching in every single one of our classrooms, whether it’s virtual or physical.

D I S TA N C E L E A R N I N G At ETM, we have always endeavored to meet challenges with excellence and innovation. We are proud of how our teachers, staff, board of directors, partners, supporters, advocates, and students have achieved that excellence despite significant barriers.

S O C I A L D I S TA N C E D I S Thank you for joining us as we navigated this harrowing but transformational year. We hope you will celebrate all we have made possible together this year and join us as we continue the endeavor together.

AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Sincerely,

“As we’ve shifted to a remote learning model, ETM continues to provide a space where kids have an opportunity to be imaginative, engaged, and safe. Now, parents/caregivers are in awe of how fantastic ETM truly is because they see from their homes how their kids light up and, for one moment in their day, find the joy of being a kid.”

ETM Teachers Stay Connected

S O C I A L D I S TA N C E

ETM provides teachers with over 100 hours of professional development (PD) each school year, ensuring that teachers are prepared for all teaching situations. When schools closed and teaching became remote, our Instructional Supervisors made all PD sessions virtual, allowing teachers to participate from the security of their homes and access them anytime they needed. The content of the PDs also shifted to topics that were relevant to online teaching situations. Instructional Supervisors were also able to share ETM’s best practices with communities outside of ETM, demonstrating ETM’s expertise as thought leaders and strengthening our position in the education space.

Looking Forward

17

AND SOCIAL JUSTICE The 2019-2020 school year was one of incredible upheaval, challenge, heartache, and anxiety.

And yet, in this same school year, Education Through Music provided access to high-quality music education to more NYC children than ever before. COVID-19 presented innumerable obstacles–many of them insurmountable. But it offered opportunities, too.

D I S TA N C E L E A R N I N G After six months of distance learning, we have a rich library of high-quality on-demand lessons that can be accessed by any child with a Wi-Fi signal. And we intend to continue to build that library, even after students return to classrooms, so that children beyond our partner schools can access music education whenever they want to.

S O C I A L D I S TA N C E D I S What’s more, the pandemic offered us the opportunity to partner with TV networks, to beam our music class into the homes of hundreds of thousands of families across the city. We hope to continue to share our lessons with new communities even after schools return to normal, and our teachers return to their music rooms fully. We’ve learned that classroom walls won’t limit our ability to pursue our mission.

AND SOCIAL JUSTICE As we engage with students in our music classes, we see that their needs have changed throughout the pandemic. They need opportunities to move, opportunities to dance, opportunities to raise their voices in joy, and sometimes grief.

ETM music teacher Jackie Gillette virtually conducts her students as they sing “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.

And we are determined to change with them, making sure that, without sacrificing quality, we respond to the new needs of a traumatized student body with trauma-informed teaching and responsive teaching practices. Students will feel safe in our music rooms, and they will also feel seen, heard, and represented.

AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Finally, in addition to offering continued on-demand learning, we plan to get into as many classrooms as possible. Most immediately, we are thrilled to announce the launch of ETM-Massachusetts, our newest affiliate. ETM-MA aims to provide access to high-quality music education for Boston Public School system students and beyond, and we could not be more honored to champion this expansion.

S TA N C E L E A R N I N G

We know that even when the pandemic is over, the havoc it wreaked will continue for years to come. But we are readying ourselves to meet those challenges with the innovation, commitment, and passion we expressed this year. Thank you for weathering this year with us. Just think about what we can do together next.
