Moving Forward: Our Journey

2018-2019 Annual Report

EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear friends, Looking back at the 2018-2019 school year, we can’t help but be proud of what Education Through Music, our inspirational students, and our amazing teachers have accomplished. Not only did we increase our student reach by 13 percent, but also we deepened the impact of our existing school partnerships. By utilizing feedback from our music teachers, we were able to add new professional development offerings, ensuring that our teachers continue to exercise best practices in their classrooms. We even honored them with an exclusive red carpet Teacher Appreciation Night to remind them how much we appreciate them. We also partnered with artists and advocates like the Israeli Chamber Project, Grammy Awardwinning violinist Joshua Bell, and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray. Miss Universe’s advocacy exposed new and diverse audiences to our work, spreading our mission and vision across the globe. We closed the year with our most successful gala yet, which raised over $1 million. We honored Paramount Group, Inc. with the Ray of Light Award, and wowed our guests with performances by Grammy Award winner The Arturo O’Farrill Trio as well as our very own students. But we can’t rest on our laurels. While we reflect on the challenges and accomplishments of the past, we’re already mapping out the future, which will include early childhood music education, exploring opportunities to expand our work with middle schools, and cultivating partnerships with NYC high schools. We hope you will join us in our work to ensure that all students have access to high-quality music education. Sincerely,

Richard Bernstein Penny Swift Chairman of the Board Executive Director

Our teachers provide music education in all five boroughs.

“I have the pleasure of going into classrooms and places where music education would not otherwise exist without the support of ETM. I believe that music education isn’t a privilege, but rather an opportunity that all students should have granted to them.” —Andy McGeagh, ETM Music Teacher

2018-2019 HIGHLIGHTS Students from Education Through Music partner school P.S. 103 in the Bronx performed at One World Trade Center to celebrate the holiday season in December 2018.

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, who holds a degree in music theory, supported Education Through Music throughout her reign. She visited a Bronx classroom, and attended our June Festival to support our young musicians. She also participated in a PSA that we were able to share on all of our social channels.

We celebrated at our most successful gala to date, held on June 12th at Cipriani 42nd Street, where we raised more than $1 million. We honored real estate icons Paramount Group, Inc. with the Ray of Light Award, to honor their commitment to excellence and their philanthropic support. Partner School graduate Cassie spoke passionately about her experience as an ETM student, sharing the impact music education had on her life.

Nearly 1,000 students from 18 NYC partner schools took to the stage for an audience of peers and supporters for the annual ETM Festival, which took place over the course of two days in May at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. Among supporters on the opening day of the festival was Miss Universe Catriona Gray.
