Stephen is an experienced senior academic, and a practising interior designer with an extensive knowledge of inter-disciplinary design and construction processes. In particular over the last 30 years he has worked and taught in close relationships with textile, fashion, product and graphic designers, media producers and fine artists. In the 1980’s he co-founded the London Design Consultancy Deacon Edge, specialising in Office, Retail and Leisure interiors. He has directed and project managed design teams working on £1million plus interior design contracts for global corporate clients e.g. Citibank, Conoco, Cannon, Kuwait Petroleum, Siemens etc., His interior design work has been reproduced in many of the UK’s leading magazines. He did his Foundation at York School of Art & Design, then studied Interior Design at Kingston Poly and more recently gained a Master of Studies degree, in ‘Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment’ from Cambridge University. He was formerly BA & MA Course Leader at UCE now BCU) in Birmingham, writing and franchising courses for theUK & Far East. His research interest is in new teaching methods for Sustainable Interior Design. He has lectured throughout the UK, USA and the Far East, and has successfully supervised KTP’s (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships) linking SME’s with Academe for mutual benefit. The students have shown a maturity in rising above the limiting conventions of mainstream professional practice, in many cases acknowledging and responding positively to the Sustainability agenda by either specifying environmentally friendly materials and products, or incorporating renewable energy systems into their concepts. Using all their creative skills and technical knowledge in their own choice of final major projects, they have demonstrated sensitivity for design solutions with appropriateness and substance. They have rejected the contemporary superficial and

In the 1980’s he co-founded the London Design Consultancy Deacon Edge, specialising in Office, Retail and Leisure interiors. He has directed and project managed design teams working on £1million plus interior design contracts for global corporate clients e.g. Citibank, Conoco, Cannon, Kuwait Petroleum, Siemens etc., His interior design work has been reproduced in many of the UK’s leading magazines. INTERIOR DESIGN
The BA (Hons) Interior Design 3rd year Graduates of 2008-2009 exemplify a diverse but integrated approach to the delivery of Interior Design education at Leeds College of Art, which examines and uestions the accepted boundaries and thresholds between the interior and the exterior in the Built Environment. It is based on a Bauhaus vision of collaborative discourse, research and individual conceptualisation. This is an internationally recognised and well established course, highly regarded by the design community. The students have shown a maturity in rising above the limiting conventions of mainstream professional practice, in many cases acknowledging and responding positively to the Sustainability agenda by either specifying environmentally friendly materials and products, or incorporating renewable energy systems into their concepts. Using all their creative skills and technical knowledge in their own choice of final major projects, they have demonstrated sensitivity for design solutions with appropriateness and substance. They have rejected the contemporary superficial and stylistic notions of the fashion-led media, in favour of more holistic approaches to how places feel, smell, sound, breathe and evolve, in order to provide healthy and ergonomically functional spatial configurations for the end users and occupants. This academic year has been my first year as new Course Leader, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank in particular our administrator Sue Lonergan for helping to guide me through all the new processes and management systems. Also thanks to my fellow course tutors for their support and encouragement – Pat Oliver, Emma Sharman, Niall O’Leary, my predecessor Graham Savage, not forgetting other colleagues Bridget March and Michael Corker. Finally I have been extremely impressed with all the students’ enthusiasm for their studies, and I congratulate them for their work ethic and mutual support of each other. I am therefore delighted to commend to you the 2008-2009 3rd year cohort of BA (Hons) Interior Design graduates from Leeds College of Art. I wish each student good fortune and every success in what I hope will be a challenging but positively green future for them.
