Leeds College of Art Prospectus Route One Concept The concept for this route combines the classic history and heritage of Leeds College of Art, with a contemporary design approach. The heritage is reflected in the colour choice and finish, combined with a minimal design direction to the layout and use of sans-serif type. The two together effectively communicating the independent, specialist art & design institution.

Design Direction Stone Grey stock both conveys a sense of LCA’s historic past, yet is neutral enough to remain appropriate to a modern audience. Large dates are a copper-bronze metallic foil, complimenting the stock and communicating a high quality, professional institution. Lines in the outside margin are representative of the sections within the book and are a repeated theme throughout.

Leeds College of Art Prospectus Route Two Concept Route two is a more traditional approach. The use of deep, rich colours and a white foil block again communicate a sense of history and show LCA as a leader in art & design education. The use of a serif typeface aids this; the layout is subtle yet detailed, contrasting with the bold colour and finish of the stock.

Design Direction Imperial Blue stock is rich and distinctive. White foil-blocked type remains equal size, and considered spacing makes function and readability the primary focus.

Leeds College of Art Prospectus Route Three Concept Route three demonstrates a more experimental approach with the type and finish. The dynamic layout provides an engaging cover design that would appeal to a design orientated audience.

Design Direction The type and layout, although seemingly erratic, is well considered and structured in such a way that all the necessary information is readable when viewing either the front or back singularly.

The white printed type and the silver foiled yeardates on the recycled stock reflects the college as a forward thinking, sustainable yet innovative design institution.

Neutral colours are used together with bold type, creating a classic and contemporary, functional and visual book cover.

Our graduates approach employment or continued study from a unique viewpoint; they’re aware of the tradition and history of printed textiles and surface pattern design, but are also familiar with the latest technologies and cutting-edge design thinking.

Links with industry We collaborate with Tigerprint and Pattern Fashion Fabric Studio, as well as other companies and studios, whenever appropriate opportunities arise. In the final year we encourage students to work with companies that have led to exciting successes for our students in Europe and the USA.

The New Designers Exhibition in London is an opportunity for our graduating students to present themselves and their work to a professional audience and to meet potential employers.

Work placements This is a key aspect of the course from the second year onwards, and you will be encouraged to do periods of work placement to suit your individual requirements. Students have been as far afield as Calcutta, USA, Barcelona and Milan, although the majority go to London or other locations throughout the UK. This year, our students have been to the design studios of Liberty, Alexander McQueen, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, River Island, Duchamp, Amanda Wakeley, Alison Willoughby, Karen Nicol and many others.

Resources We have professionally equipped textileprint workshops with three full-time specialist technicians. These workshops offer equipment for dyeing, screen-printing, heat-transfer printing, digital printing and laser-cutting. The well-equipped CAD suites have both PCs and Macs. All students have access to the internet and use software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign (no prior knowledge of these is necessary).

Third year – Visual Research and Professional Application – Design & Realisation – Personal & Professional Development 3 – Dissertation

Study visits As part of the course, we visit major cities of culture. In the past, these have included Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan, Paris, London, Florence and New York. Exhibition opportunities During the second year, a trip to Paris offers the opportunity to visit the Maison et Objet interior trade fair or Indigo and Premiere Vision international fashion fabric trade

European links The course participates in the College’s Erasmus student exchange scheme (see page 76 for more information). Progression & career opportunities Graduates go on to employment in the following industries: fashion and furnishing textile design; card and gift wrap; wall coverings; media and publications; fashion marketing; styling; buying; fashion accessories; costume design; and interior design. Each year, several students continue their studies at MA, MSc or PGCE level.

Higher education In all instances, you will need to have a portfolio of relevant practical work that shows your ability and enthusiasm for the course that you are applying for, as well as achieving level 3 qualification/s in an art and design related subject (see below). You also need to have passed GCSE English Language or English Literature at grade C or above, or Key Skills Communications Level 2. For mature students, an Access to Higher Education qualification in art and design will also be acceptable to demonstrate English language ability. For mature students who are unable to provide formal evidence of an appropriate standard of English, the College may request completion of its own English proficiency test. If you are studying an accredited Foundation Diploma in Art and Design You’ll need 240 UCAS tariff points** from your Foundation Diploma and your AS and A2 results. You may add together AS/A2 and Foundation Diploma tariff points in arriving at 240 points. You will also need a GCSE grade A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above).

If you are studying for a BTEC National Diploma or Extended Diploma You’ll need 240 UCAS tariff points** from a National (Extended) Diploma in a relevant subject or a Creative and Media Diploma (Level 3). You will also need a GCSE grade A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above). If you are studying for your AS and A2s You’ll need 240 tariff points** from AS and A2 study. Two of your qualifications must be at A2 level, one of which should be in an art and design or a related subject. You will also need a GCSE grade A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above). If you are a mature student studying for a recognised Access to Higher Education course You’ll need a recognised Access to Higher Education course specialising in art and design. HNC Millinery To apply, you should be at least 18 years old with at least one of the following: four GCSEs at grade C or above and one A-Level in a related area; a National (Extended) Diploma, National Certificate, or AVCE in a related area; a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design; or equivalent qualifications and/or industrial experience. This course also welcomes students who are returning to education; in this case we take into account your motivation, potential and previous achievements and experience within the clothing/fashion industry. Studying for any other qualification? We accept a number of other qualifications. Further education Foundation Diploma in Art & Design entry requirements You should normally be at least 18 years old with one A-Level plus three GCSE passes at grade C or above, or with equivalent qualifications. National (Extended) Diploma entry requirements You should be at least 16 years old, have four GCSE passes at grade C or above, or an Intermediate GNVQ or Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design at a merit or above, and be able to present a portfolio of work which shows your interest and ability in art, design and/or technology. Level One or Level Two Diploma in Art & Design entry requirements For the Level Two Diploma you should normally be at least 16 years old with at least three GCSE passes at Grade D, and be able to present a portfolio of work which shows your interest and ability in art, design and/or technology. There are no entry requirements for the Level One diploma. Progression to Level Two will normally require a merit to be achieved at Level One.

Spreads Design Direction Layout is structured, clear and readable, dictated by a modular grid and additional ‘line signatures’.

Colours Four colours are chosen for both cover routes, each used to represent the four book sections.

The line signatures appear in the right margins of each page, containing section information and page numbers. These appear in the corresponding colour of the section, and form a solid line of colour across the outer edge of all the pages.

General Art & Design and Access to HE entry requirements There are no formal entry qualifications for this course, but you may wish to show us examples of work which demonstrate your creative side or skills such as drawings, paintings, models, garments or photographs. Students with sufficient experience in art and design may progress directly to the second year (Access to Higher Education) of the course.
