2012 Emeritus Russian River Pinot Noir $34.99

The 2012 vintage provided a rare occasion in California to make a wine elegant in style, more delicate, more fragrant and more feminine in nature than usual. This is a joyful wine that retains its freshness yet remains reserved. It is lively with vibrant acidity that carries red fruit aromas of strawberry and raspberry. This is a very special vintage for us—the year dry farming finally fulfilled its promise.

2013 Maestracci Corse Calvi Rouge Clos Reginu $17.99

Welcome! You’ve just stepped “outside the box.” This is a fabulous blend from the Calvi appellation on the island of Corsica, and what a value. This wine is sustainably farmed and unfiltered, and is a quintessential Mediterranean food wine. Especially at this stellar price, it’s just… well… soooooo good. Marjoram and rosemary, rose hip with wild plum and cherry mingle on a subtly tart and piquant yet persistently luscious not to mention delightfully buoyant palate, leading to a finish that clings with resinous and cyanic but also juicy persistence.

2011 Domaine de la Tour du Bon Bandol Rouge $36.99

For years, Americans have been discovering the excellent foodfriendly wines of the Cotes du Rhone, but farther to the south in Provence lies a gem called Bandol. A beautiful oasis on the Mediterranean, Bandol is nestled beneath the mountains to the north and produces some of the most interesting, dark, meaty Southern French blends. Like all Bandol Rouge, the major grape in this wine is Mourvedre, but winemaker and proprietress, Agnés Henry blends in Grenache to counter the Mourvedre spice with highertoned kirsch notes, Carignan for freshness, and Cinsault to bind it all together harmoniously. Certified organic.

2012 Asylum Zinfandely $15.99

We have grown accustomed to a “monster” style Zin from the Lodi appellation, but despite the wild, unrestrained tone of its title, Asylum delivers a finesse that we found very pleasant and frankly quite unexpected. The wine is overflowing with notes of blackberry and strawberry. Dense berry flavors dominate the palate with undertones of toasted coconut and vanilla. Zinfandel (92%) and Barbera impart intense black fruit notes. Carmenere and Petite Sirah compliment the fruit while enhancing the underlying tannin structure.

2013 C&P Breton Bourgueil Trinch $23.99

Catherine and Pierre Breton’s “Trinch!” Bourgueil is a prime example of how plainly delicious and gulpable French Cabernet Franc can be. “Trinch” is named after a German expression meaning “cheers” championed by the poet and philosopher Rabelais. Trinch is a Cabernet Franc from younger vines vinified in stainless steel with a cold maceration, and is bottled in the spring following harvest. It is made for early consumption and has very accessible fruit, soft tannins and low alcohol. The wines of Breton are certified organic & biodynamic.

A wine that I love, and a super bargain, is their Scout’s Honor. Old World wine

primarily to wine

made in Europe but can also include other regions of the Mediterranean basin with long histories of winemaking such as North Africa and the Near East. The phrase is often used in contrast to “New World wine” which refers primarily to wines from New World wine regions such as the United States, Australia, South America and South Africa. The term “Old World wine” does not refer to a homogeneous style with “Old World wine regions” like Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain each making vastly different styles of wine even within their own borders. Rather, the term is used to describe general differences in viticulture and winemaking philosophies between the Old World regions where tradition and the role of terroir lead versus the New World where science and the role of the winemaker are more often emphasized. In recent times, the globalization of wine and advent of flying winemakers have lessened the distinction between the two terms with winemakers in one region being able to produce wines that can display the traits of the other region—i.e. an “Old World style” wine being produced in a New World wine region like California or Chile and vice versa!

Classic Bordeaux varietals, done in a very classic style. 12 month aged in Barrique and another 18 months in bottle before release. Villa typically releases “Gradoni” when it’s ready to drink. The fruit is lush from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with aromatic hints of eucalyptus and menthol while the Cabernet Franc adds structure, acidity and hints of spice, licorice root and black pepper. “Gradoni” will hold for another decade or so, but is also very enjoyable now.

2010 Ripanuda Chianti Classico $17.99

From the heart of the Chianti Classico district is a little winery that became a project of Flavors of Italy and a couple of friends. Driven by tradition, but acquiring modern techniques, they were able to vinify a Chianti like the days of old and keep close to the price as well.

2012 Suertes del Marques “7 Fuentes” (90% Listan Negra, 10% Tintilla) $23.99

Suertes del Marques comes to us from Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. The volcanic soils and landscapes of mountain ranges similar to the islands of Hawaii bring us two new varietals that most of us have probably never heard of. They may not be very popular, but they deliver great complexity and they’ve formed a wine that everyone will enjoy and appreciate. 7 Fuentes has a very flowery nose, showing violets and rose petals, a touch of spices, and red fruits: raspberries, strawberries and sour cherries. The palate shows great fruit and a tasty, almost salty, finish.

2012 Descendientes de Jose Palacios Petalos $20.99

Deep ruby. Smoky cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suave floral and dark chocolate nuances. Blackberry and bitter cherry flavors become sweeter with air, picking up a peppery note that adds vibrancy. Closes spicy and long, with sneaky tannins and an echo of bitter chocolate.

2011 Bodegas Jorge Ordonez Zerran $14.99

50 to 60 year old vines of Mazuelo, Garnacha and Syrah make up the this red blend from north eastern Spain. “Even more so is the 2011 Zerran, which ratchets up the level of concentration and ripe fruit. It reveals abundant kirsch, lavender, black raspberry and dusty, loamy, earthy scents intermixed with notions of spring flowers and blackberries. There is not any oak evident in this dense effort. Its completeness and overall equilibrium are impressive, and this great value should drink well for 5-6 years, possibly longer.” A well structured red that even Cab lovers will enjoy.

2012 Edgebaston The Berry Box $12.99

A medley of small berry and fruit flavors including blackcurrant, raspberry, strawberry, mulberry and blackberry combine with a hint of anise and vanilla to give a wine that is instantly gratifying in flavor while showing good structure and tannin concentration to allow for some maturation.

30 miles east of Santiago these vineyards are planted at approximately 1500 feet elevation. The rocky soils and elevated terroir give this wine a vibrant structured fruit expression with natural acidity and soft tannins. A perfect everyday Cab that is easy on the wallet.

2013 Mayu Pedro Ximenez $13.99

The 2013 Pedro Ximenez is from very old vineyards in parral style on decomposed granite, quartz-rich soils, and might well be the highest vineyard in Chile. The place has a special brightness - I’m talking about the quality of the light from the high altitude - that brings the aromas out, this is much more expressive than your average Pedro Ximenez, with aromas of white flowers, fennel and some spiciness, very dry, with high acidity thanks to the altitude as well as tension and minerality. If you like the fresh, austere style, this is a real steal. A good alternative to Sauvignon for seafood.

Grape varieties.

Wine is usually

made from one or more varieties of the European species Vitis vinifera, such as Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay and Merlot. When one of these varieties is used as the predominant grape (usually defined by law as minimums of 75% to 85%), the result is a “varietal” as opposed to a “blended” wine. Blended wines are not considered inferior to varietal wines, rather they are a different style of winemaking; some of the world’s most highly regarded wines, from regions like Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley, are blended from different grape varieties. Wine can also be made from other species of grape or from

hybrids, created by the genetic crossing

of two species. V. labrusca (of which the Concord grape is a cultivar), V. aestivalis, V. ruprestris, V. rotundifolia and V. riparia are native North American grapes usually grown to eat fresh or for grape juice, jam, or jelly, and only occasionally made into wine.

Hybridization is different from

grafting.

Most of the world’s vineyards are planted with

European V. vinifera vines that have been grafted onto North American species’ rootstock, a common practice due to their resistance to phylloxera, a root louse that eventually kills the vine. In the late 19th century, most of Europe’s vineyards (excluding some of the driest in the south) were devastated by the infestation, leading to widespread vine deaths and eventual replanting. Grafting is done in every wine-producing region in the world except in Argentina, the Canary Islands and Chile—the only places not yet exposed to the insect. In the context of wine production,

terroir is

a concept that encompasses the varieties of grapes

used, elevation and shape of the vineyard, type and chemistry of soil, climate and seasonal conditions, and the local yeast cultures. The range of possible combinations of these factors can result in great differences among wines, influencing the fermentation, finishing, and aging processes as well.

Step 3:

Narrow down to a varietal

Step 4:

Pick a year

Step 5:

Stop by Fuijoka’s Wine Times

Because soil conditions significantly affect the taste of grapes, a wine’s country of origin is critical to its flavor. Learn more about wine via one of our wine tastings and events.

Varietal is one of those wine words that confuses and intimidates. Don’t let it. The word describes a wine made from a single grape variety, and the varietal tells you a lot about what’s in the bottle.

Contrary to popular belief, age isn’t everything when it comes to choosing a wine. While some bottles improve with age, not all do. In fact, most of the commercially available wines you buy may even worsen if you cellar them for too long.

Pick a region

When pairing wines with food, you don’t need to drill down to the level of the fine nuances to make an informed choice. All you need are a few simple pairing rules. Come by Fujioka’s Wine TIMES, we’ll fill you in with the details.
