Betz Clos De Betz $51.99

With Merlot as the dominant variety in this blend, the color isn’t as inky black as the Pere de Famille, but the Clos de Betz still shows the dense color saturation from core to edge of the glass. Then the aroma takes center stage, with pure, vibrant black cherries, camphor, cocoa and a slight kirsch essence. Its foundation is a classic, complex expression of Washington Merlot, but since 40% of the blend is made from Petite Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the aroma takes on additional dimension of anise, rose petal and baking spice. It enters very supple and plush, with a jolt of black cherry and red berries that stays true to the aroma. Dried herbs, chocolate and a touch of smoky oak play supporting roles. The finish points dances with a robert combination of parker refined tannin and vibrant fruit, points the signs of a wine successful future spectator in the cellar.

The wine itself is a luminescent, pale pink color in the glass and a sparkles with a mesmerizingly fine bead. It entices with a spicy, blossom-laden complexity on the nose. Delicate flavors of honey, suggestions of ginger, vanilla, and crème brulée overlay subtler notes of ripe cranberries and strawberries.

100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mount Veeder appellation of Napa Valley. This wine has a deep purple color, expressive aromas, and complex flavors; all indicative of its Mount Veeder origins. Scents of truffle, vanilla, cedar, manzanita, and blackberry will intrigue the senses. On the palate, there is luxurious mouth filling fruit, good tannic grip, and delicious texture. With rougher and wilder edges smoothed out from previous vintages what is left are layers of expressive dark fruit, licorice, mint and new leather. This deep and powerful Cabernet has a deep ruby color partnered with musky aromas of black fruits, espresso and cocoa. We refer to it as a baby Prisoner. A blend of Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each grape varietal adds a unique characteristic to the blend. The Zinfandel component is brimming with brambly, intense red berry flavors. Inky, intense Petite Sirah provides depth and color and concentration, while elegantly structured, silky Cabernet Sauvignon adds polish and complexity.

2006 Godspeed Vineyards “Trinity” Napa Valley Red Blend $33.99 This is an “old world meets new world style” triumph from Godspeed Vineyards. With their renowned Mount Veeder estate Cabernet Sauvignon as its core (42%), Godspeed’s inclusion of Malbec (25%) and Syrah (33%) simultaneously raises this wine’s power and elegance. Trinity opens with a profuse nose that foreshadows the wine’s flavors of red fruit, black cherry, roasted coffee, and black pepper. An elegant and unique mouth filling mountain blend that pairs beautifully with any meat menu item. Only 600 cases produced.

2010 Godspeed Vineyards Chardonnay $21.99

Imagine if a very classic Napa Chardonnay was made with the soul of a fine white Burgundy from France. It would be this excellent Chardonnay from the Mount Veeder estates of Godspeed Vineyards. This wine’s Burgundian soul starts with select grapes, carefully crushed, and barrel fermented with no malolactic fermentation. This retains the Chardonnay’s focused and crisp fruit flavors. The wine then builds its lovely body with 11 months of aging in 80% neutral and 20% new French oak barrels. The final result: an elegant nose and palate of tropical pineapple, lemon curd, and hints of honeysuckle and hazelnut. Subtle oak aromas, moderate alcohol, and a clean lime peel finish make this a balanced and perfect Chardonnay for all occasions.

Stylish and sophisticated, with real depth. Young, but seriously impressive for this level and price. This is a great value Bordeaux with beautiful expression.

A rare and delicious Chardonnay from Savignylès-Beaune; a Burgundy region renown for its elegant Pinot Noir. This wine opens with aromas that suggest orchard flower and fruit, and hints of exotic spice market. On the palate, round and well-concentrated flavors are balanced by a gently racy finish. Fans of great white wines from Burgundy will truly love this.

Fortant de France Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 $11.99 These wines are sourced from selected vineyards located in the coastal valleys around Sète. This wine is deep purplish red in colour and features an intense nose with notes of blueberry and violet. Round and delectable on the palate with lovely flavours of freshly picked black fruit. A classy and expressive value Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tessellae “Old Vines” Côtes du Roussillon 2011 $14.99

It boasts an expansive, intense, complex bouquet of garrigue, strawberries and black cherries intermixed with a hint of spring flowers, a velvety texture and a voluptuous mouthfeel. This beautiful, soft, round, seductive red should drink well for 4-5 years.

Bodegas Nekeas “El Chaparral” Old Vines Garnacha 2011 $12.99

From the Bodegas Nekeas vineyards planted between 1890 and 1930, the El Chaparral Old Vines is always my favorite wine from this producer. This wine is made from 100% Grenache, or Garnacha, as the winery calls it. The 2011 possesses the classic notes of licorice, black raspberries and black cherry liqueur in a full-bodied, sexy, pure and ripe style. This is another amazing value from this winery, which any consumer attempting to maximize their purchase power should know by name. A spicy, elegant yet playful wine.

Creta Roble Ribera del Duero 2010 $15.99

Ripe blackcurrant and boysenberry on the nose, with bright spice and floral accents. Fleshy and sweet, with supple dark berry preserve and violet pastille flavors, velvety texture and bright mineral lift. Finishes with spicy length, soft tannins and lingering florality. This fruit-driven wine goes great with lamb and other savory preparations of game.

Castaño “Hecula” Monastrell 2010 $12.99

Smoky, spice-accented aromas of cherry, cassis and anise, with a subtle mineral quality. Deep dark fruit flavors and showing a creamy texture. Sweet and penetrating on a youthfully tannic finish with distinct licorice and cherry notes. Great with slightly spicy meats and perfect with BBQ or grilled meats.

Bodegas Teso La Monja “Victorino” Tempranillo Toro 2007 $43.99

The 2007 Victorino was sourced from 45-year-old vines and aged in new French oak for 18 months. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is big, structured, and beautifully concentrated. Bodegas Teso La Monja is the Eguren family’s new project in Toro featuring a state of the art winery and old vines of Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). Big and powerful this wine will appeal to all of you Cabernet lovers.

Bodegas Jorge Ordonez “Nisia” old vines Verdejo 2011 $13.99

The 2011 Nisia is made from 100% old vine Verdejo (the youngest vines were planted in 1942). The wine is aged sur-lie, and fermented in both stainless steel and large format French oak. Notions of caramelized white citrus and tropical fruit blossoms along with a naked, natural texture as well as finish make for a terrific dry white with loads of personality and complexity. This beauty sells for an absurdly low price.

Mas Doix “Costers de Vinyes Velles” 2008 $105.99

Izadi Reserva Rioja 07 $18.99

50% Carignan, 48% Garnacha, 2% Merlot The 2008 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles reveals a deep purple color with outstanding aromatic complexity. Notes of liquid minerality, licorice, lavender, Asian spices, and black cherry lead to a supple, savory effort loaded with spice and personality. There is a nicely concealed structure that will allow the wine to evolve for several years although it is approachable now. It will be best from 2015 to 2028.

A modern style Reserva, with deep, comlex flavors and aromas. The complex aromas have hints of red berries and smokiness from the fine wood. This wine is flavorful and velvety in the mouth, well structured and a has a long, elegant finish.

Pale gold in color, this Cava has aromas of mature white peach, toasted bread and green tea with hints of lemon citrus and apricots. A well structured dry red Spanich table wine (initially fermented in stainless steel and then put through malo and aged for nine months in older French oak): Bright violet color. Pungent dark berry and mineral scents show a lively character. Firm and juicy, offering concentrated blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of allspice.

‘Black’ is a new blend produced from classic varieties that do not make it into the Quinta do Noval vintage. There are ripe blackberries, tar, smoke and orange liqueur on the nose that takes time to open. The palate is medium-bodied, very sleek on the entry, fleshy black fruits, sloe, spice and just a hint of white pepper, leading to a very focused finish.

Laphroaig 18yr 48% abv Non-Chill Filtered $124.99 The extra maturation has definitely smoothed out this Laphroaig. Rich, creamy, with subtle brine, smoke, seaweed, anise, ginger, and citrus are on the palate. Although the 15yr will be missed, I think this is a great replacement.
