Super Neighborhood Council 14 News Submitted by Darlene Wayt,
SNC-14 Correspondence Secretary, dwayt@comcast.net Super Neighborhood Council 14 (SNC-14) meets the second Thursday of even months from 6:15 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. at Lazybrook Baptist Church, 1822 W. 20th Street. The next meeting is August 9. HPD Officers and a representative from the City of Houston (COH) Department of Neighborhoods attend these meetings, providing a good opportunity to speak directly to HPD and the COH. At our June meeting, a special election was held to fill vacancies: Vicky Putnam, President, is from Brookwoods Estates CC; John Zavala, Vice President, is from the TMCC; and Megan Jackson, Treasurer, is from the Timbergrove Terrace HOA. Ashley Stubbs stepped up to chair t h e P a r k s & B e a u t i fi c a t i o n Committee; Ashley resides in the TMCC’s Section 5. Linda Avedon w i l l ch a i r t h e n e w l y fo r m e d Membership Committee; Linda is from the Timbergrove Court HOA. Please visit the website at www.snc-14.org for the full list of Executive Council members and Committee chairs and our contact information, especially if you are interested in joining one of our committees. Infrastructure Committee A presentation and discussion focused on Stanley Park, the proposed development south of the TMCC’s

Section 5. Several residents from Section 5 attended the meeting to express their concerns regarding the Stanley Park Development and to seek answers and guidance from the COH and support from the SNC-14. Their concerns are flooding, stress on infrastructure, traffic and access. Our COH Department of Neighborhoods representative offered them advice and explanations for avenues they may choose to pursue with the COH, especially addressing City Council. The SNC-14 Executive Council and Delegates voted to help these residents with letters of support to the appropriate COH and County departments and individuals. To learn more about the efforts of this residents’ group, visit their website, www.stopstanleypark.com.

Crime & Safety Committee HPD Officer Kenneth Bigger reported that home burglaries and especially burglaries of motor vehicles continue to be a problem. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. While gone from home, use home alarms, get to

know your neighbors, ask people you trust to keep an eye on your property. At home, do not open your door to strangers but let them know you are home by speaking through your locked door. Nonemergency HPD is 713-884-3131; emergency is 911. Contact Officer Bigger at Kenneth.Bigger@HoustonPolice.org. Parks & Beautification Committee The Bryce Trailhead Project at Bryce and W. 11th Street is complete! The fence foundation, around the Bryce Chemical Feed Station, has been repaired. New plants are in the rain garden and a grate has been installed. Trees for Houston will water the newly installed trees for two years during dry periods. This information is from Sherry Weesner, who can be contacted at MHRA.tirz5@gmail.com. The application to rename West 11th Street Park to The Lorraine Cherry Nature Preserve has been submitted to the COH HPARD, thanks mainly to the efforts of Dave Dyer and Michelle Colvard of Friends of West 11th Street Park. Also, thanks to the more than 700 of you that signed the petition to rename the park in honor of Lorraine Cherry. We will report the next steps in this lengthy process as we receive information. Submission of the application is only the beginning. To learn about the SNC-14, visit the website at www.snc-14.org.

We’re halfway through the year and half way to our annual civic club membership participation goal. While that may sound like good news, the truth is that we have seriously fallen behind our typical collection. But there is still a silver lining: it's not too late to become a 2018 TMCC member. Annual dues are only $30 and your contributions not only support TMCC’s abundant social offerings, but our ongoing design review, deed restrictions enforcement assistance, neighborhood parks, school and more.

Security Committee Update by the Security Committee Many thanks to the generous neighbors who have made financial donations to support private security initiatives. SEAL Security officers have been busy not only with regular patrols (day and night shifts), but with numerous vacation patrols. You can help too! Keep an eye out for yo u r n e i g h b o r s ’ h o m e s a n d re p o r t suspicious persons or concerns to the dedicated TMCC Patrol Hotline at (832) 956-1966. If you haven’t made your 2018 donation to support neighborhood security, you can give now at timbergrove.org or by mail. Suggested donations are $250 per household or $175 for Seniors.

TMCC is Lit! A big shout out to SEAL Officer Salvador for stopping to log the details of ten street light outages during one of his recent nighttime patrols. The security committee

followed up his report with 311 requests most of which have been resolved. What a great way to support TMCC’s PLAN (Porch Lights At Night) campaign. Below is a list of lights reported.. • Light 210975 on 6200 Block of Hurst • Light 210974 on 1000 Block of Shirkmere • Lights 215664, 215665 and 215666 on 1600 Block of Droxford • Light 215667 on 1500 Block of Droxford • Light 216665 on 1600 Block of Droxford • Light 215666 on 1600 Block of Droxford • Light 210998 on 6200 Block of Abington • Light 210999 on 6200 Block of Abington

You can do your part too. If you know of another street light that isn’t shining bright, please report it to 311. And turn on your porch light tonight — and every night!

Crime Update While an analysis of year-to-date crime through the end of May shows neighborhood thefts are down from 2017 levels, two recent burglaries doubled the 2018 totals. However, burglaries are still under values for the same time last year and significantly less than prior years. Nevertheless, the need to be diligent remains, especially after a robbery attempt on a woman pushing a stroller at the end of May. Please note: crime statistics are taken from publicly available sources and are, to the best of our knowledge, accurate and up to date. However, final numbers as reported by the Houston Police Department may change these statistics.

Nearly 25% of TMCC residents have lived in their home for more than 30 years! At the same time, nearly 10% of our neighbors moved in since 2016.

Plug In to the Good Energy in the ‘Grove By Jennifer Vickers Volunteers are the heartbeat of Timbergrove Manor. We’re so grateful to Carrie Brawley for taking over as Timbergreeters Committee Chair. Along with fresh-faced volunteers Cynthia Schwendeman, Jennah Pry, and Laura Bradham, expect to see these neighborhood goodwill ambassadors greeting our newest neighbors.

Send a message to volunteer@timbergrove.org to sign up to assist with one of the following. Newsletter Editor As you may have read in the last edition of the Timbergram, 2018 will be my final laying out a print edition of the civic club news.

If you’ve recently moved into the neighborhood, drop a.line to directorcbrawley@timbergrove.org. We would love to get you on the email list so you can keep up with neighborhood happenings and have a welcome kit we’d like to deliver. They include TMCC decals which help Security Patrol know which vehicles should be regularly parked in the area.

If you’re not already receiving electronic editions of this newsletter, please visit timbergrove.org to sign up for email alerts. However, the civic club is aware that some of our residents strongly prefer access to a hard-copy version of the newsletter and the board is working hard to ensure we continue to deliver printed communications to residents who request them after 2018.

We also have some important and exciting volunteer opportunities.

Do you have professional or desktop publishing and layout experience? The

current newsletter is designed using only Apple's Pages software - a program free to Mac users. Of course, the great thing about volunteer-driven work is adapting to meet changing needs. (So a future print newsletter could easily switch to different software depending upon the preferences of the new editor.) The board is also researching more turn-key newsletter publishing options provided by third-party vendors. However, if TMCC elects to go in such a direction, a volunteer to coordinate with the publisher and numbers committees will still be needed. If you're interested in learning more about working on The Timbergram, please get in touch.. VIN Etching Event Coordinator VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft that involves etching a

vehicle’s VIN onto its windows to reduce the value of a stolen vehicle to thieves. The TMCC Security Committee is in need of a volunteer who can work with HPD to coordinate the next VIN Etching Event in Timbergrove Manor. The scope of work includes booking services with law enforcement, finding a host venue, managing attendee sign-ups, promoting the event, and recruiting additional volunteers to execute the project. If you’re organized, good with logistics and just a little tech savvy, please consider helping. Web Developer TMCC’s current website is built on a WordPress platform. We love the ease of updates and affordability of this technology but want to take our donation offerings to the next level. In conjunction with the organization’s goal to offer members options for reoccurring subscriptions for annual dues, private security subscriptions and more, we are in need of a volunteer with the web development experience to select appropriate third-party providers and implement new storefront solutions.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY HEIGHTS PEDO ORTHO When should my child see the dentist for the first time? Best time to start dental visits is at around one year of age. For the first few years those visits are mostly for parents as we discuss proper dental hygiene and habits as well as growth and development of teeth and jaws. These visits are also designed to make kids comfortable with our office, to get to know Dr. Lindhorst and her team, and to make sure that more demanding future visits with regular dental cleanings and xrays are easy. What about the orthodontist? Often kids benefit from the first orthodontic checkup around seven years of age. At that time front permanent teeth are coming in and Dr. Darsey can assess spacing as well as jaw development for the first time. Some kids need short phase I of braces at that time in order to create more space or help jaws grow properly; however, many kids will not need actual orthodontic treatment until all their permanent teeth are in around twelve years of age.

Fourth of July & Other Activities Maybe you're a born party planner, a creative-type or one of those folks can keep everything organized. If so, it sounds like you'd be a shoe-in to help with our ongoing calendar of special events. Our next social will be the annual Independence Day Ice Cream Social where we'll need assistance the day of. But we need help planning and executing our roster of fun activities year-round.

If you order the report before listing your home, you can check it for accuracy and be aware of any problems you might have in selling. A clean report, which you can make available to potential buyers, can be a good selling point.

Q. What is a CLUE report? A. The Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) is a national insurance industry database of personal property claims. Insurance companies use it to underwrite or rate new policies. Whether you are selling or buying a home, you should talk to your REALTOR® about obtaining the report, which

Buyers. Seeing the report eliminates any “surprises” (water or fire damage, mold etc.) that may affect the cost and availability of getting homeowners insurance on the property.
