Without a doubt, our riding community is changing. The “younger millennials” aren’t killing it – as many in the industry might have you believe – but they are certainly changing the game. And more and more women riding on their own also changes things a lot. Again, not killing it – just changing things. As always, the new younger riders are bringing new interests and styles to the forefront in terms of bikes. This isn’t anything new – choppers, big wheels, bobbers, cafés, etc... were almost always introduced by new generations of riders, and this new wave of riders is no different. What are the new, younger riders going after? Of course, there is a lot of variety – but from what I’ve seen – it’s the “retro-custom, made your own – on your own, in your own garage” which really gets the blood pumping with the next generation of riders. And Ohio is certainly a hotbed in terms of this style and the shops that are creating it. Shops and suppliers such as Low-Brow, Led Sled, and TC Brothers, and shows such as Garage Brewed (Cinci) and Fuel (Cleveland) all help drive this type of passion in bikes and riding. Unfortunately, it seems as though these new trends have befuddled many of those in the industry and the local dealerships themselves - surprisingly. The manufacturers have sought to bring out new bikes in “new-retro” styles to capture the interests of the younger riders. Some of these are incredible machines, and some of them are even priced to be attractive to those that would otherwise never consider anything less than 20 years old or more than $2k. The problem though, is that some of the manufacturers and dealerships have decided to shift their focus from the motorcycle community and their current “customers” in an effort to attract the new younger riders. They’ve stopped supporting local charity rides and events – in favor of social media campaigns and advanced cell phone / texting campaigns. Instead of going out into the community and supporting the events and causes that we have supported for years as riders – they are now focused purely on driving people through their own doors and more complicated promotions on-site. The problem is that many of the new riders – whether they are women, millennials, or guys just now getting around to riding – aren’t suddenly waking up and deciding that they want to spend a lot on a new motorcycle. So, they aren’t walking into the big manufacturer shops but instead they are going out to the local bike night, community bike show, or their local shop and seeing what the “other kids” have made and are riding – and they want that! This problem is exacerbated by the next generation of whiz bang marketing geniuses that come along and think that selling motorcycles is all about slick social media and direct marketing pieces. Coincidently, few of these folks are actual riders – and they simply don’t get it!

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Our riding community is about PEOPLE – it’s about a sense of community and connecting with kindred spirits out on the open road. It’s about getting out on the road and RIDING. It’s not about digital riding simulators or pinterest campaigns. As a print media publisher – I’m a dinosaur and represent a dying media to many of the new corporate marketing folks. They ignore the fact that we have a huge online presence with HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS following us on social media. They just see the print and can’t understand that. The irony is that if there was a chance they were right, I’d be there first in line to jump aboard the “all-digital express”. This slick magazine you’re holding – perfect bound, with the fancy imprint on the cover – is free to virtually everyone on the planet, except me. And we spend a lot to print it. If I could go all digital, that would be great. But no, we would lose something. We would lose our core audience – I believe. We would also lose the ability to randomly connect so many events and people – with just the turn of the page. It’s simply not the same online. (Don’t get me wrong – there’s nothing WRONG with digital, we reach more than 200k riders each month with our digital edition. You can’t beat the convenience, but I still think it’s better to have a copy in your hand.) Every year we support HUNDREDS of non-profit motorcycle rides and events with free event listings and subsidized ad rates. We then distribute THOUSANDS of magazines every month to riders all across Ohio – FREE OF CHARGE. We do this with the support of our advertisers and sponsors – in service to YOU, the local rider. Please take the time and make the effort to support the local businesses and corporate sponsors that have bucked the trend and have remained supportive of the local riding community, and our work serving it. We couldn’t do what we do without them – or you. And we are grateful for that. Thank you, THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

THE IRON COWBOY

AIMExpo presents an Invitational TRO Bike Show! Showcasing unique custom bikes created here in the Midwest! Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that we will be working with the AIMExpo to present a selection of CUSTOM bikes as part of the show coming to Columbus in September. We will be featuring a limited number of bikes in order to showcase some of the amazing rolling works of art that have been produced right here in the Midwest. Over the last several year’s Thunder Roads Ohio has hosted Bike Shows all over Ohio, and we’ve seen some pretty amazing custom bikes during that time. With the motorcycle / powersports industry coming to Ohio – it only makes sense to show off what our “hometown builders” can do! To make things a little more fun, we will also invite the show attendees to vote on their favorite bikes on display. The People’s Choice winner will receive a $500 Cash Prize and all bikes will receive special recognition as being showcased in this special invitational display. If you’ve built a custom bike of any style – café, bobber, cruiser, chopper, whatever.. Whether it’s an evolved Honda or inspired Indian, a customized Harley or deconstructed Ducati – whatever.. We’d like to invite you to come out to one of our Bike Shows and let us know that you’d like to come out to Columbus and represent the Midwest cyclesmiths! The TRO Custom Bike Display will run through both the industry and consumer portions of the show, so we would ask that they be at the show from September 26-28. For more information, please email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com AIMEXPO September 26-27 (Industry) 28-29 (Open to the public) Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, OH For more information or to buy tickets, visit AIMEXPOUSA. Get your Kids (or yourself) out on the track! SAVE THE DATE! Thunder Roads Ohio teams up with the Dayton Motorcycle Club for a special Open House / Field Day on July 20th.

USED BIKE SPOTLIGHT: KTM Duke 390

Hard to imagine a better bike for a new street rider – or an experienced rider that just wants to feel like a kid!

If you’re a road rider that’s always wanted to get out on the track or you’ve got kids that you’ve wanted to get riding – this is the chance you’ve been waiting for. On Saturday, July 20th the Dayton Motorcycle Club will host a special “Open House (Track)” day at their clubhouse. Plans are still all being finalized, but it looks like there will be a road ride, live music, food, and the chance to learn a little about motocross on their track. This is a family friendly event that’s open to all – all levels of experience (none to lots), all kinds of riders (street, track, dirt, or even just aspiring!). Thunder Roads Ohio will be on-site and hosting a TRO BIKE SHOW – with over 12 possible classes and awards for each! For more information, you can contact either the Dayton Motorcycle Club or Thunder Roads Ohio on facebook – or email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com We will have more information online and in next month’s magazine.

In our never-ending quest to ride just about every type of bike that exists, we recently came across a 2106 KTM Duke 390 that we added to the TRO stable. And I’ve gotta tell ya – this is an incredible bike! We’ve been looking for lightweight bikes that are more practical to take to rallies and events – possibly even pack away inside the “TRO Ice Cream Truck” when we head out on the road. So we originally looked at this bike for it’s utilitarian aspects – lightweight and compact in size. Then we started reading the incredible reviews and seeing what other’s thought… and then we took it out on the road. And we’ve been hooked ever since! This is an amazing street bike that packs incredible performance (and fun) into a well built and economical machine! It’s nimble, has plenty of torque and a surprising amount of power for a little 373cc single. Weighing only 326 pounds full of fuel – it’s able to get the most of it’s motor and is really a blast to ride. Looking back over industry reviews – it’s clear that we aren’t the only ones impressed by the bike. Motorcycle.com called it their “BEST LIGHTWEIGHT / ENTRY LEVEL” in 2015 and UltimateMotorcycling.com called it the “Mayor of Urban Motorcycling” (whatever that means.. lol).

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

May’s Scavenger Hunt Winner: Diane Aleck THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Our friends over at Pony Powersports (www.PonyPowersports. com) in Columbus have the new 2019 Duke 390 retailing for $5,499 according to their website. We were able to pick up this well maintained 2016 for slightly more than half of that from a private seller. This seemed like an amazing deal with all that it offers, but for a “few dollars more” we might recommend just bumping up to a new one if that’s an option. The new models have an updated display and many features that aren’t found on most bikes twice as much! Thumbs Up! We highly recommend the Duke 390 as an exceptional value and sure bet if you can find one used and in good shape!

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

Hi Friends,

For as long as I have been writing this article I have always led off with the stats, which I think shows how we are riding. As I mentioned before, the state changed the website the stats are published on and it is rough. So, I don’t have the information for you yet but I will win the fight by next month. I think our Safety and Education position in ABATE is very important. First, we need legislators to pass laws that benefit us. Second, we must have educated motorcyclists to show our legislators that we deserve laws that benefit us. Until I can tell you how good we are, be safe and ride safe. Motorcycle Ohio (MO) is having kick off events in May and June all through the state. These events are intended to promote Motorcycle Safety and the MO training program. In June they will be in Valley View, Austintown and Canal Winchester. You can visit motorcycle.ohio.gov for more info about locations. ABATE and MO have had a close relationship for many years so it would be nice for our members to support these events. If you attend, wear your ABATE shirt and have a handful of applications with you. Something that I found in a stack of papers from many years ago was a picture from the AMA from about the 2000 era. At that time they had a slogan “Motorcyclists Matter”. We see variations of that slogan everywhere now. At this time of the year, the beginning of summer, we need to remind people that Motorcyclists Matter by having an aggressive Awareness campaign. There have been many TV ads about the dangers of distracted driving and we need to work hard to not be distracted drivers and riders ourselves. When you see a Look Twice Save a Life sign let it be a reminder to put your mind back on what you are doing. Be Aware because Motorcyclists do Matter! ABATE will have the Products Trailer and the Raffle Bike at The Original Margaritaville the entire 10 days of Ohio Bike Week. Come out & see us and support Ohio Bike Week at Margaritaville, Downtown Sandusky and Mad River Harley Davidson.

ABATE will have the Products Trailer at the Freedom Rally in Carrollton the last weekend in June. This is an ABATE party that supports local Veteran’s Charities. Show your American Pride by supporting this event. ABATE will have the Raffle Bike at a new event for us, Dayton Bike Fest on June 27th – 29th. Check out their web site at daytonbikefest.com and stop and buy your Bike Raffle Tickets while you are there. In the words of a famous TV show, “Everybody be safe out there!” See you in July. www.SmileAmazon.com This is where you should be doing your on-line shopping at – with ABATE of Ohio Foundation as the recipient! When you shop here, instead of just amazon.com, a donation is made for every dollar you spend. You can go online to smileamazon.com and select ABATE of Ohio Foundation as your charity. It doesn’t cost you anything – but it can certainly benefit you, by helping to support ABATE of Ohio and your Motorcycle Rights! 10

see the storm really isn’t the difficult part of the story. The cleanup is the hardest part. Finding the strength to press in and start over again. And if you have been through many storms, you have learned one of two things...either you have learned how to get up and get going, or you have allowed yourself to sink deeper into the dark places and drown in the flood.

“As long as I remember, the rain’s been coming down...” These rainy days leave some room for thinking out of the box for some of us. Some of you will know the tune the lead in line came from, some may not. Give yourself a second...you’ll be humming it.

Personally, I have had my share of storms. And while I love watching a good thunderstorm, I do not care for the storms of life I have had to endure. Unless you are totally addicted to drama, I’m guessing you don’t care for the storms either! Here’s what I know...I have learned that in whatever state I am, to be content. Everything we go through lasts only for a moment, only a season of time. And though some moments seem like a lifetime, as I think back, the moment was just a blink and the best part is that the craziness I felt then, I don’t feel now. How is that possible?

The next line says, “clouds of mystery pouring, confusion on the ground...” Lots of truth to that line. There’s so much going on these days...messages coming from everywhere. Right side, left side, middle of the road...media hacks, check the facts or it may be a slippery slope! No, I am not getting political...you get enough of that. I am going to talk a little bit about rain though. It’s annoying to those who ride, yet it has a purpose. Rain can be a blessing, or it can be a curse. A blessing because it comes and waters the ground and vegetation and makes all things grow. A curse because if too much comes at once, floods can happen and destroy homes, lands and more. But what happens after the floods? After the water subsides and gets absorbed into the ground, going deep into the soil into the dark places we don’t see. What is left? The cleanup. All the debris and trash left to have to dig through. Homes have to be nearly gutted out, flooring pulled, furniture, clothes...it’s not only messy, but heartbreaking as well. However, after the cleanup comes the new. Homes are restored, roads are restructured and made stronger. All the vegetation begins to spring up and things start looking good again. New.

Through the flood of love that comes in when Jesus comes in to rescue us...He rains on us, washing us over like a flood with His Holy Spirit, cleaning all the deep places that others around us don’t see and awakening our hearts to dust off the old debris, restore the broken places and make all that was meant to be destroyed brand new. Peace to your storm...

That’s a lot like life isn’t it? Storms come in and wreak havoc with our lives, disrupting and unrooting everything, leaving us feeling weak and not knowing what to do or where to turn. Sometimes, these storms, though looking quite nasty during them, can actually turn out to be a blessing. At first we think “What are we going to do? How will we get through this? What will happen to us?” And then all of a sudden, we pick ourselves up and begin to put the pieces back together again. You

Marrietta Bike Blessing We are Southeast Ohio Chapter, Bikers for Christ. We do individual bike blessings, bible studies and share God’s gospel as we travel on rides and meet other club members on their runs and events throughout the year. This year we decided to hold our own “Blessing of the Bikes” in Marietta Ohio on May 4th. Although the weather was to be quite questionable as forecasted for that Saturday, we left the rain up to the Lord to clear the day as He deemed fit. Well, He came through as usual, answering our prayers, and gave us a clear dry day to have our event. We had approximately twenty bikes attend for our first bike blessing. We decided to have all the riders and our team make a circle and hold hands around each bike. Taking turns, one team member would pray for the bike and rider. During the prayer, each bike was anointed with oil on the headlight to complete the blessing. Then we would move to the next bike and so on. This was a very personal experience for each person who attended and each member who prayed. 12 12

At the end we gathered in another circle to thank God for the day, all who attended and those who could not make the event. Afterward we had a police escort for a parade style ride through town and enjoyed some pizza donated to us by a local business. Overall, what a day it was!! Such a blessing!! We look forward to the 2nd Annual Southeast Ohio Chapter, Bikers for Christ “Blessing of the Bikes” for 2020 – and possibly seeing you out on the road! Elder Dan Carpenter SEOHBFC

Aspen Dental Offering FREE Dental Care for Veterans Call TODAY to schedule an appointment for June 8th. More than 500 Aspen Dental locations nationwide plan to open their doors on June 8 to provide free dental care for thousands of veterans. Starting May 1, veterans can call 1-844-277-3646 (1-844-ASPENHMM) to find a nearby office and schedule an appointment. “Achieving oral health is especially challenging for the majority of U.S. veterans as they are not eligible for dental benefits through the Veterans Administration unless they are 100 percent disabled, have a servicerelated mouth injury or were a prisoner of war,” organizers say. “Day of Service is all about thanking veterans for their service in the best way that we at Aspen Dental know how and helping to empower them with the gift of a healthier mouth. This year, we expect to give free dental care to approximately 5,000 on that one special day.”

Join us for the Ohio Women Veterans Conference, one of the largest gatherings of women veterans in the nation. This year’s conference is Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10. Meet your sisters in military service of all eras from WWII to present-day Iraq and Afghanistan. Network with fellow women veterans—Ohio is home to 67,000—and learn about the benefits, resources and opportunities you have earned with your military service. You will find information about Ohio’s new fast track to jobs and education for veterans, services available locally through 88 County Veterans Service Offices, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will share information on its Women Veterans programs and benefits. “From World War II to today, there is a different perspective that we come across in this group of women veterans. We embrace the sisterhood among women veterans and we lift each other up.” - Claudia Foss, Vice Chair of the Ohio Women Veterans Advisory Committee #SheServedToo - Strong. Healthy. Empowered.

Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement was launched by Aspen Dental in 2014 and aims to deliver free dental care and oral health education to people in need across the United State. Since that time, nearly 10,000 Aspen Dental team members have volunteered their time and talents to deliver more than $10 million in free dental care to over 17,000 patients in need. GET TO THE TRACK!

Although the weather has been less than pleasant for riding, you can always take in a weekend of racing rain or shine. If road racing is your poison, Nelsons Ledges Road Course in Garrettsville, Ohio has several motorcycle race weekends scheduled this season. From WERA to LEAN Track Days and LEAN Endurance races you can find local racers hitting the track nearly every month. The newly paved surface has proven to be very fast with new track records being set at this historical raceway. Mid Ohio Vintage Days at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course will be filled with action the weekend of July 5-7. And if you want to see superbike action, MotoAmerica again comes to nearby PittRace the weekend of August 23-25. Should flat track racing be more your style, Lima Half-Mile at Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio hosts American Flat Track Racing Saturday, June 29. Sturgis will also host American Flat Track Racing with two events scheduled for August 4 and August 6. Want to get out on that dirt bike for practice or some motocross racing, check out Smith Road Raceway in Medina. In operation for over 30 years, Smith Road Raceway is open to the public. Their annual Memorial Day race will be held Monday, May 27. A great addition to the usual rally stops or bike nights within a reasonable ride time. June is the month to “Cruise for the Cause”

Whether you kick up your kickstand or twist your throttle, there’s no better way to enjoy riding season than to find a worthy cause to support. Motorcycles and charities go hand-in-hand. It appears every weekend during the summer months there are rides for relief foundations or opportunities to raise money for those in need. It seems the only thing better than going for a ride, is doing it for a worthy cause. May’s calendar was full and concluded with Ohio Bike Week. I was busy attending bike nights throughout the area as well as riding to the Outer Banks for their annual Outer Banks Bike Week. Needless to say, Ohio’s Bike Week is the granddaddy of all bike weeks! To kick off Ohio Bike Week, I was honored to lead the opening night “TRO Ladies Lakeside Ride.” It was great to meet more lady riders! Looking ahead to June’s calendar, it is apparent that the motorcycle community is known for supporting local charity rides and poker runs. Every weekend is chocked full of charitable rides to choose from. Charity rides unfortunately often result from unlucky situations that caused a need to bring awareness of voluntary giving of help, typically in the form of money, to those in need. Accordingly, to the Charity navigator, over $410 billion was given to charities in 2017. The motorcycle community is so large, that we all are connected to people who may be struggling with something or who have suffered great losses. Charity rides keep a loved one’s memory alive in addition to supporting the many causes that people fall victim to. One of the June rides focus on Recovery. Over 23 18

million Americans currently are living in recovery. The disease of addiction is treatable. TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES

MAY UPD

ATE!

The Bike Show Series is in full swing with shows being held throughout Ohio! Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop these local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals - they are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt! Then come on out to the show! Specifics vary by show, but it’s generally an informal process. You’ll meet other builders and exhibitors – and most likely you’ll walk away with more than a few new friends in the motorcycle community.

Email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com TODAY to reserve your spot with TRO for Upcoming Shows!

NEW FOR 2019: WINNERS DRAWN YEAR-ROUND! SIMPLE DIGITAL CHECK-IN’S! “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOPS!” SPECIAL PASSPORT RIDES! SCAVENGER HUNT CHALLENGES! PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS AND ReasonsToRide.com Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2019 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge with YEAR-ROUND opportunities to WIN by hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride and discovering new stops ALL ACROSS OHIO and the MIDWEST!

Checking in at Ride Stops! Designated Ride Stops are listed at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and featured throughout each issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check.

Checking in at TRO Tour Stops! Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various events throughout the state – and beyond! In some cases the CREW will be attending national rallies and other events throughout the Midwest – including Michigan and Pennsylvania motorcycle events. Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard or check in with your smart phone. “Make Your Own Ride Stop!” Riders can recommend a RIDE STOP by simply “Checking-In” through their facebook account with the hashtag #TRO. Within the post, BTR Riders should say that they are “Making this their Ride Stop” and that we should also. You can also include why – and even do it all within in a posted video as well. Special prizes each month are allocated for these check-in’s and the stop itself can win – if applicable. Selected “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP’s” have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes – and each posting increases their chances to win! In such cases, the person(s) nominating the Stop with their check-in is also eligible for additional prizes as well.

$500 Amazon® Gift Card to be awarded to a chosen Rider nominating a Winning Stop with their check-in!

Riders can take part in special themed tours held throughout the year. Themed Tour Stops! In some cases these themed tours may include a special map and designated series of stops to hit. Riders then hit the designated stops and once completed – they can win special prizes, including Amazon® and Mastercard® Gift Cards* of up to $500! Some tours can be completed in a day – while others may take a weekend, week, or more. Themed Tours are currently under development and possible tours include: OHIO BIKE WEEK WINE COUNTRY TOURS MILITARY / VETERANS TOURS AMISH COUNTRY TOURS

GEVENA / EASTERN ERIE TOUR HOCKING HILLS TOUR MOHICAN TOUR OHIO TWISTIES TOUR

INDIAN LAKE TOUR BUCKEYE LAKE TOUR HAUNTED HOUSE TOUR And many more!

Scavenger Hunts! Special Scavenger Hunts will be offered for a unique ride that’s fun and challenging. Riders will have to be on the look-out for various items, stops, and routes as they seek to complete the HUNT! Riddles and other challenges will be part of the fun. Special prizes will be offered to those that complete the challenge!

How do you Start? (It's really simple!)

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card! (Online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com, at an Event, or at some Ride Stops!) 2. Like Thunder Roads Ohio on Facebook. (You don’t have to, but it makes things a lot easier and more fun with it.) 3. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 4. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 5. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio.

PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like.

Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.

RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! And it’s SIMPLE – 1. LIKE US ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM. 2. GET OUT! When your our riding or checking out a favorite stop – you can CHECK -IN! 3. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AT THE LOCATION. 4. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. 5. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #TRO 6. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR EMAIL AND OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK – AND LOOK FOR US TO ANNOUNCE YOUR NAME OR NUMBER! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS – BUT IF YOU’RE ON FACEBOOK, IT’S THIS QUICK AND EASY!

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Norm & Doug’s Dual Sport Ride, April 5-7 Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) folks like to start off the season with something further South so we headed to Dillard, Georgia for our annual dual sport ride on the weekend of April 6. It rained Thursday night but ended at noon Friday, with temperatures of 55-65 degrees. Roads dried quickly and we were able to do a 90 mile ride in the afternoon.

dual sport riders on hand, they have spare inner tubes, tools, a miniature electric air compressor, lots of expertise and manpower! There was also a local guy with a pickup truck in the parking lot changing a couple of lawn tractor tires. Unlike the Nasty sisters outside of town, Hank offered us anything he had, including the tailgate of his truck, a tank of compressed air, tools, etc. Dual-sport bikes don’t have centerstands so we found an old car wheel in the lot and Hank had some blocks of wood. Bike stand problem solved. 190603.jpg We easily removed the wheel and found another old car

On Saturday we started about 915AM, riding a 180 mile loop that included Wayah Rd, Robbinsville, NC and lots of other fun stuff. It was a beautiful day- temperatures 55-70 and partly sunny. A bit after 11 AM, We were a couple of miles outside Andrews, NC, when

wheel to lay the KTM wheel on to change the inner tube. We had a variety of tire irons, plus multiple opinions on the best way to get one bead of the tire off the rim. After we removed the punctured tube out of the tire, we immediately found the problem- a nail almost three inches long that Tom pulled right out of the tire. With the nail safely out of the way, we put in a new inner tube one of the riders had with him. We pried the bead back on and were getting ready to hook up a mini air compressor, but Hank stepped in and told us to just use his air tank. That will save time but when we tell him we don’t want to use up his air, Hank says, “I only live two blocks away. I can run home and refill it if we need to!” The next thing we need is a bit of soap and water to lubricate the bead and make the job easier.

Tom Trieschmann sensed that squirrely feeling in the rear tire of his KTM 690. We stopped at the foot of a residential driveway to check it. Two women immediately came running out of their house, yelling at us, claiming we were trespassing etc. We politely told them that we had an emergency- a rider with a flat tire- and that it would just take us a minute or two to check it and we would be on our way. The women calmed down a bit but were still hostile. Wow. Fortunately, there would be better hospitality down the road. The tire was indeed going flat, so we rode a few miles into Andrews, NC, where we found an auto parts store. They didn’t have any motorcycle tubes. but they might have other stuff and it was a clean paved parking lot. Besides, when you have 11 MSTA 44

Hank is on it with a small bottle of liquid soap. The bead goes back on with no trouble and Hank is ready with paper towels so people can clean and dry their hands when done. We aired up the tire and Hank’s air tank still had about 60 PSI so he and his buddy are good to go on their lawn tractor tires.

Popping the wheel back on the bike was almost anti-climactic, taking only a minute. The bike is as good as new and we can be on our way. The flat tire cost us about forty-five minutes, but It was great social time and camaraderie for the group. Most of all it was a priceless experience in small-town America where you get to meet local people like Hank who make you appreciate what a great country we live in and the wonderful people who live there.

the way back to Dayton with us. 1906-08.jpg 1906-09.jpg 190610.jpg Moyer’s is under new ownership and has been remodeled,

so how was it? They added a bar, improved the restrooms and redecorated a bit. Food and drink was good. Service was a bit slow but it didn’t matter- there was plenty of good conversation. Several people bought wine to take home. 1906-11.jpg 1906-02.jpg MSTA is best known for weekend rallies, but we also do local day rides usually to meet somewhere for lunch. Since our membership is dispersed, rather than all meeting somewhere and riding together, we mostly meet in small groups of one to five riders who ride their own route to a common lunch location, enjoy social time together then disperse and ride independent routes back home.

For the return route, we reversed the morning ride down after a gas stop in Manchester. The sun stayed with us and we arrived home about 4 PM for a perfect riding day!

We’ve been looking forward to the annual lunch ride to Moyer’s Winery on the Ohio River near Manchester, Ohio, for several weeks, but Ohio weather has been fickle this spring. First rain was expected, but that changed to cool cloudy and dry. When Allan Skinner, Jennie Kimes and I started out Saturday morning, we were pleasantly surprised to find it was already 55 and Sunny. The route I had planned from South of Dayton was about 100 miles; mostly back roads, going through small towns such as Blanchester, Fayetteville and Sardinia. The last forty miles is hilly and twisty, especially SR 763. About half way down we caught up to Joe Keegan, one of our MSTA friends from Waynesville, Ohio, who rode with us the rest of the way. It was one of those perfect rides- not much traffic, roads in good shape, tar snakes tamed down by the cool temperatures. It was the first ride together for all of us this year and we chatted on our intercoms while sharing info about dogs, deer, gravel on the road etc. We arrived at Moyer’s Winery about 11:30 AM, just in time to meet up with MSTA riders from other parts of Ohio. Ron Vess was probably long distance rider, coming all the way from Marietta, Ohio. There was a contingent from Columbus, including Larry Watts, Howard Baumwell, John Boyd, and Bryan Dunlap. Michael Wade, Bill Rusk, and Tim Mullins from North of Dayton. Aaron Engle, Louis Santiago from the Cincinnati area. Mike and Pam Kells came over from their house on the Ohio River east of Manchester, joined us for lunch and rode most of THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

KNOBLE MOTO NOTES:Don’t pressure wash your bike! As an avid rider, who logs about 10,000 miles a year, I understand the battle with keeping your bike clean. Many people have decided to start using pressure washers at their house or the car wash, to blow the road grime off. While this may be a quick solution, it can cause some serious problems down the road. Most of your electrical plugs have some form of a seal inside the connector, or at the entrance to the electrical component itself. Those seals are designed to keep road grime, and rain water out. They are not designed to take a 1000 psi blast from a pressure washer, especially on a repeated basis. What happens is, water gets inside your electrical connectors and begins to corrode the electrical connections. Corrosion means electrical resistance, and resistance means electrical failures and problems. Of course, these problems generally show up at the worst possible times, and nowhere near your garage. These days the newer bikes are loaded with all types of electrical components. With fuel injection, ABS, stereos, traction control, and GPS on many bikes, an electrical problem can prove to be a nightmare to chase down. Even if you have an “20th century” bike that does not have all those electrical components, you do still have a charging system that is vital to getting you home. A little moisture inside a high current plug, like on your charging system, can kill your charging components in the blink of an eye. This problem likely won’t show up until your battery is beginning to drain, probably in the middle of a ride. In addition to electrical failures, pressure washers tend to blast the oil off your cables, and out of the pivot points of your controls. Down the road this will lead to sticking controls and cable failure.

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

The pressure washers can also blast moisture into the foam of your seat and damage any leather attachments you have on your bike. Anyone who has ever tried to dry out a soaked leather jacket knows how long that process can be. A few tips for keeping your charging system and electrical components in good working order: • Regularly inspect your electrical connectors and battery terminals for signs of corrosion or damage. • Early corrosion can be cleaned with products from the local auto parts store. After cleaning the corrosion, put some di-electric grease on the connectors before reassembly. This will keep moisture out and protect the conductors from the elements in the atmosphere that cause corrosion. • When you are servicing your bike, check the voltage with a digital battery tester. The bike voltage should be 12 volts dc or higher with the bike turned off. With the bike running, the voltage should read 13.4 volts dc to 14.6 volts at 2000 rpms.

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

• Keep your bike on a trickle charger in the off months, or when it is sitting for a few days. This keeps your battery in top shape and reduces the load on your charging system. So, don’t pressure wash that bike! A garden hose, soap and a sponge work better anyways. Steve Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. The Devils Tongue There are two types of people I despise. Thieves and Liars. I spent last week in California on vacation. I used to live in LA in 1993-94, so it was interesting to go back and see my old stomping grounds. Some things had changed, others remain the same. One thing about LA and California in general-- it’s a rough town and state. You can feel the tension everywhere you go. People are literally just trying to survive, less all the exotic cars and mansions I saw in Beverly Hills. This trip had me up in Oakland, CA for a few days. I made a rookie traveling mistake. I left a backpack sitting on the back seat of my rented SUV. Damn, I knew better. We strolled up downtown Oakland for dinner, and of course when I returned to the car the rear window had been smashed out, and the backpack was gone. The thief didn’t get much value, my favorite long sleeve shirt from the Last Resort Bar in Daytona, my favorite beach hat, a couple packs of smokes and a battery cell phone charger. It was more the inconvenience of having to go to the airport and swap out rentals than anything. But it did get my blood boiling. How I wished I’d have been walking down the street when it happened… It got me thinking about the type of people I despise, Thieves and Liars. I would hope most of us don’t hang around with known thieves in our clubs, but what about liars? I’ve seen it too often in my years in the club life. I’ve even seen groups of people lie to protect one brother, all while throwing another under the bus. It’s disgusting. Generally, those who lie will eventually get caught up in their lies. Although the worst are the ones who can work the shadows and tell half truths so that they are always protecting themselves in their lies. I’ve never understood why some people go to such great lengths to lie. Oh a few I know lie for personal gain, or to try to one up everyone else. But those that would lie on their own club brothers are the scourge of the earth. Depending on their position in the club, it can really set a horrible example too. My advice to you that 52

have these types of people in your club is to be wary of them. Even if their lies might benefit you this time, they will surely turn it on you in the future if the occasion requires. And for those of you that speak with the Devils tongue, you are worthless to your nation. My Road Name is Tabasco… Keep it REAL! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

RECIPES

Tequila Lime Pork Loin Serves 6-8 (or 4 hungry bikers) I love fried green beans but they are full of fat - this is a healthier way to make them and still enjoy that yummy flavor and crunch!

Crispy Baked Green Beans with Feta Dip Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 178 cals, 7.2g fat (4.4g saturated) 1/2 - 1 cup flour ½ cup Panko bread crumbs 3 tbsp parmesan cheese ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp onion powder 1 tsp basil, ground fine 1 tsp oregano, ground fine 2 egg whites 1 lb fresh green beans Cooking spray 4 ounces Feta cheese ¼ cup milk Juice of half a lemon 2 tbsp green onion, minced fine ¼ tsp salt ¼ black pepper Dip: Blend feta cheese, milk, lemon juice, salt, and a pinch of pepper in a food processor until smooth and creamy. Place in an air tight container and refrigerate for 2 hours then bring to room temp before serving Green Beans: Preheat oven to 450 degrees and coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Mix bread crumbs, parmesan, garlic, onion basil, and oregano in a bowl Whip the eggs in separate bowl. Dip the green beans into the flour, then the egg and finally into the bread crumb mix, and place on baking sheet. Repeat with the remainder of the beans making sure they dont touch Bake for 30 minutes or until the bread crumbs are golden. Serve with feta dip

1 cup tequila 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp garlic, minced ¼ tsp salt 3-4 lb boneless pork loin 2 limes, zested and juiced 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 tbsp black pepper 1 tbsp brown sugar (or sugar free substitute) 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp dried thyme ½ tsp salt Combine tequila, lime juice, lime zest, oil, garlic, and salt in a ziplock bag, seal and squish around to mix well Place pork loin on a cutting board and poke it several times with a sharp knife to make small holes all over (this will help the marinade get in) Place pork loin into the bag with the marinade, zip shut getting as much air out as possible, then squish around again to be sure the marinade gets ALL over the meat Allow to sit in the fridge over night When you’re ready to cook, remove the meat from the ziplock and discard Preheat the oven to 350 In a small bowl mix the lime zest, oregano, black pepper, brown sugar substitute, chili powder, thyme, and salt, stir well to combine then coat the entire surface of the pork with the mixture Place the pork on a rack in a shallow roasting pan and cook for 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours until the internal temp reaches 150 degrees Remove from oven and cover with a tin foil tent to rest for 10 minutes Then slice and serve!! YUMMO!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND A small boy was lost at the beach, so he went up to a lifeguard and said, "I've lost my dad!" The lifeguard said, "What's he like?" The little boy replied, "Beer and women!"

A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: A half-gallon of 2% milk, A carton of eggs, A quart of orange juice, A head of romaine lettuce, A 2 lb. can of coffee, And a 1 lb. package of bacon. As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, "You must be single." The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was Intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said "Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct, but how on earth did you know that?" The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly."

A farmer and his brand new bride were riding home from the chapel in a wagon pulled by a team of horses, when the older horse stumbled. The farmer said, "That's once." A little further along, the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer said, "That's twice." After a little, while the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer didn't say anything, but reached under the seat, pulled out a shotgun and shot the horse. His brand new bride raised all kind of hell with him, telling him, "That was an awful thing to do." The farmer said, "That's once." A new dentist set up in a small town and quickly acquired a reputation of being the latest kind of "Painless" dentist. But a local chap quicky disputed this. "He's a fake ! " he told his mates. "He's not painless at all. When he stuck his finger in my mouth I bit him - and he yelled like anyone else. Smartie "If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up" said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one student rose to her feet. "Now then young lady, why do you consider yourself an idiot?" inquired the teacher with a sneer. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself."

Stephanie's Husband Stephanie's husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she had stayed by his bedside each and every day. One day, when he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he whispered, eyes full of tears, "You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you stayed right here. When my health started failing, you were still by my side. You know what?" "What, dear?" Stephanie gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth. "I think you're bad luck!" Drunk Guy A guy walks into a bar with a giraffe and says, "A beer for me, and one for the giraffe, please." So they proceed to drink. Then: "...a shot for me and one for the giraffe, too" And they keep drinking all evening. Finally the giraffe passes out on the floor of the bar. The guy pays the tab and gets up to leave. The bartender shouts out, "Hey! You're not going to leave that lying on the floor, are you?" The guy replies "That's not a lion... it's a giraffe.
