FROM THE PUBLISHER Summer’s underway and despite a seemingly endless amount of rain and crazy weather to start the season – riding season is upon us! This month’s magazine is jam packed with rides, rallies, races, bike shows, bike nights, and just about every type of event imaginable – something pretty much for anyone that rides, regardless of what they ride. From churches to churches that have been converted to breweries, from bars to sand bars, from saloons on piers to bike shows in fairgrounds – we cover just about setting as well. It’s a wide range of events, because we always like to mix things up and encourage everyone to try something new. There is, however, a common factor that’s found in every event and ride stop we present for your consideration – and that’s great people. I love the machines – and certainly LOVE the ride. However, it’s the brothers and sisters, friends and family that I’ve acquired and discovered all across Ohio – and the country – during my travels that really makes it all worthwhile. These are kindred spirits with a passion for riding. And it really doesn’t matter if you’re on a monster touring bike, a custom café racer, or an adventure bike preparing to ride cross country – we’re related. There’s a common passion that flows in our blood – maybe a gene in our DNA. It’s this common bond that allows you to ride cross town, across Ohio, or cross country – and walk into a motorcycle friendly bar, diner, or shop and instantly be accepted. Of course, there are folks that ride and haven’t figured this out. And there are a lot of people in the business, that aren’t really a part of our riding community. That’s a fact of life – there’s always an exception to every rule. But these folks stand out and are generally short for this way of life. The ones that get it – they celebrate the ride and become legendary over time amongst the brothers and sisters they meet along the way. So, if you’ve got your bike – come on out and join us on this ride. Come on out and join us at a TRO Event – we’ve got more than a few listed on page 30. You can join us at the Hot Rod Nationals, Zeppe’s, Quaker Steak & Lube, Wild Eagle, The Barn, The Villa, or any of our other Ride Stops or Bike Shows. Or you can simply get out and discover your own stops (and maybe share them with us!). The bike is just the start. The Tank Award This past May the motorcycle community lost a true legend in Tank Ewsichek, the owner of Tuff Cycle in Aurora OH. Tank was a celebrated builder and acclaimed painter, and his bikes have been featured on the cover of numerous national and regional magazines – however his true gift was a huge heart and a passion for helping others. He was the epitome of the big gruff biker with a heart of gold, as anyone that knew him could attest to. Even when faced with an ominous prognosis in terms of his own health – he still made every effort to go out and help others within his own community. He rode for charity rides, to support the charitable “Lemonade Stand”, and just for the fellowship of the Breakfast Rides which were so rewarding for those that took part. It’s also important to note that Tank was as gracious and as humble as he was talented – which is saying something. Certainly he wasn’t a quiet wallflower, but when he spoke – it was never about himself or his achievements, he let those speak for themselves. He was certainly a tremendous example of professionalism and class from which we could all learn a thing or two. With all of this in mind, Thunder Roads Ohio would like to introduce the TANK AWARD in his honor. This Trophy will be presented at Bike Shows to recognize BUILDERS and PAINTERS that convey a similar sense of professionalism and class – along with his passion for helping others. We will accept nominations for the award at the shows and through email, so if you believe you know someone that we should recognize with the TANK AWARD – let us know! Jordan McGhee was the first recipient of The Thunder Roads TANK AWARD. Jordan owns Farmtown Motors and already has established himself as a creative builder that’s always willing to help out other shops and builders. He received it at the Zeppe’s Bike Show after being nominated by members of the Tuff Cycle Crew. He was at the show with his custom H-D Softail – that one remarked “Now that’s a bike that Tank would have loved!”

Hi Friends,
I hope everyone is off to a roaring start to the riding season with it now being half over. My first part has been a little wet. I’m hoping that changes, but it is always good to get rain riding practice in early, I guess. What is the first thing you do when it starts to rain? Take a brake and put your rain gear on; it takes about 30 minutes for the roads to get oils and gunk washed off. Okay, no more about rain till next year! To all the riders that read this that are not members of ABATE I would like you to think about something, do you know what ABATE of Ohio does for the riding community? We are the ears and eyes of the motorcycling community; we keep us riding safe and free. The things that should make a difference to every rider is E15 gas, smart cars, our freedom to wear and ride what we want and so much more. We need every rider to become a member because, if E15 takes over and our gas gets hard to find you will not be riding. If we don’t lose our gas, and all pumps always have E10, we still have another problem---Automated Vehicles, aka “Smart Cars”. At this time not all parts of a smart car can see us. This meaning if a driver of a smart car thinks his or her car is sensing everything around them and it is not, they will not be warned that we are there, and we will be a victim. So, as these vehicles start taking up space on our roads, we need to be more aware of what could happen. Never underestimate what that driver and car may do. We motorcycle riders must ride more defensive now than ever. Now that we have all been riding, in between rains, remember to check your bike out before every ride. I just had a friend stop and ask me to check his bike out. Told me it was not handling like it did. So, as I walked out to the bike, I seen that the front tire looked a little low, 18 psi. Every time you walk up to your bike look it over, low tire, something hanging and fluid under the bike. Then once a week or day check the air pressure, oil level and lights (most owner manuals have a nice check list). I spent ten days at Ohio Bike Week--great time and I love to watch people. As I watched, the thing that came to my attention
was the passenger mounting and dismounting the motorcycle. Seen two bikes go down because the passenger got off before the rider was ready. When I get a new rider, I like them to mount like a horse left foot on the peg and right foot over the saddle. One girl was tall and stood next the bike and put her right foot over and stood there, but she was tall. Talk to your passenger, they don’t need to be kicking the saddle bag lid. I have talked about support for the old riding clubs that have been around forever. When I came back from Vietnam my dad said we are going on a poker run. Back then it was $10.00 for AMA, you had to be member because all runs were sanctioned, and $5.00 for the Club. AMA at that time was our voice in government and then in 1978 ABATE was started and then each state had an SMRO, State Motorcycle Rights Organization, so support the organizations and clubs that have been keeping us free for so many years. When riding, remember your manors and be kind, we may need their vote some day to pass a law to keep us safe.

Veterans, with a service connected disability rating, are now eligible to access Federal recreation lands and national parks for free with an America the Beautiful-the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands lifetime Access Pass through an interagency partnership between the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation. Good for entry into thousands of federally managed recreation sites across the country, the Lifetime Access Pass is another way a grateful nation says thank you for the service and sacrifices of U. S. Veterans with disabilities. The Access Pass admits the pass owner and any passengers in a single, private vehicle (non-commercial) at per-vehicle entrance and day use fee areas; or, the pass owner plus three additional adults where per-person fees are charged. In addition to free entry at participating sites, the Access Pass includes discounts on some expanded amenity fees such as camping. Sites recommend that pass owners check with each site before visiting for details about Access Pass entry and discounts.
Veterans who have been medically determined to have a permanent disability that severely limits one or more major life activities (e.g., VA disability rating of 10 percent or higher) are eligible for the Lifetime Access Pass—with three options for obtaining the pass: First, Veterans with disability documentation can order the Access Pass online for a $10 processing fee which includes standard shipping. Documentation required includes: •
Proof of residency
•
VA disability award letter, VA summary of benefits, or proof of SSDI income
Second, the Interagency Access Pass may be obtained through the mail. Download a paper application from https://store.usgs.gov/ access-pass. Follow the instructions on the website and pay the document processing fee of $10. Once the application package is received by USGS, the documentation will be verified and a pass imprinted with the pass owner’s name will be mailed to the applicant. Passes ordered online or through the mail will be delivered 3 to 4 weeks after receipt of documentation and processing payment. A third option is for disabled Veterans to visit a participating federal recreation site where interagency passes are issued, present photo identification (e.g., Driver’s license, State ID, birth certificate, Passport, or permanent resident card), provide documentation of permanent disability, or read and sign a Statement of Permanent Disability affidavit. That’s It. The Pass is free and issued at the time of entry. Make sure to have photo ID available when using your Lifetime Access Pass and enjoy the majestic scenery and abundant recreational opportunities our National Parks provide. JULY ALREADY? Ohio Bike Week has come and gone. And it seems like a good part of Summer is flying by as well. By the time you read this, the days will already be getting shorter. Weather has not cooperated much either. But still a lot to do in the coming months. This year make it a point to head out to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the 2019 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Honda. The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Bike Show and two daredevil riding exhibitions will entertain spectators over the three days that are Vintage Motorcycle Days July 5-7. Three time AMA Grand National Dirt-track champ, Bubba Short is the 2019 Grand Marshall. Both vintage and modern competition and custom motorcycles will be displayed at the Old Bike Barn Crossroads on the Mid-Ohio infield. On-site registration to enter the show will be accepted 8-11 a.m. July 6. The $10 fee is a donation to the nonprofit AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The Wall of Death features motorcycle riders performing tricks and aerobatic riding on vintage motorcycles along a vertical wall. The Xtreme Trials Exhibition will feature top performers in the NATC/AMA Moto Trials National Championship Series. All the while vintage competition in road racing, motocross, hare scrambles (you may even catch a glimpse of Billy Morris of Sunset Strip going over the river and through the woods) and trials will be held at Mid-Ohio. The ever popular flat track racing is held at nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds. Exhibition pit bike racing and dirt drags are also a fan favorite. Vendors of all types will be on-site and don't forget the Federal Motorcycle Transport sponsored AMA Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet in the U.S., the largest in the U.S. I don't believe you will be disappointed. If you are out and about that weekend stop over and say hi. You can usually find me at the camper near the top of the keyhole.

A “Spyder-tacular” Rally! One year ago, I had the privilege of riding my Spyder out west for 6 weeks. The scenery was breathtaking! The middle of last month, I discovered the beauty and sights of Southeast Ohio at the 5th Annual Southeast Spyder Rally. Between 15 – 20 states were represented as over 200 Can-Am Spyders gathered in Zanesville, Ohio for this 3-day event. Rick Wiles led the ride departing from Zanesville. The route immediately started to showcase its beauty as we rode past Seneca Lake, through Wayne National Forest on 260 and along the Ohio River. It was an awesome sight to see the parade of Can-Am Spyders fill the road for a continuous 217-mile ride. The weather held out and not a drop of rain interfered with the ride. The route was a rider’s dream! Martinsville, West Virginia

was our stop for an “all you can eat” lunch buffet at Quinet’s Court Restaurant. This is a route I will be riding again, but next time, I will plan a couple of days so I can stop and photograph the many sights, covered bridges, etc. Even though this was an exclusive Spyder event, Value Accessories hosts a 2 and 3 wheel motorcycle rally from August 8 – 11. It also originates from the Best Western in Zanesville. Fridays ride is escorted for a 56 mile ride to Holmes County with lunch at Der Dutchman. The Saturday ride is 217 miles and includes Wayne National Forest, Seneca Lake, Marietta and Ohio River. Rick and Teresa Wiles, owner of Value Accessories in Northeast Ohio has been organizing this 2 wheel motorcycle rally for 17 years. They are now Spyder Ryders and added a rally just for Spyders 5 years ago. Ricks knowledge and passion for motorcycles has grown into a full time business offering a plethora of accessories for not only Can-Ams, but Harleys, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Victory motorcycles. www.store.valueaccessories.net Looking back at the recap of bike week, a friend and I parked an RV near Sandusky and took in 9 days of the event. It was her first time and my second. The week began with the first ever ladies led ride in which I was honored to lead. Not having much knowledge of the area, it took me 4 trips to the area to scope out a scenic ride along the lake. Twenty-one ladies enjoyed the 2 ½ hour ride that went with a stop at Marblehead Lighthouse for a group photo. One of my highlights was riding in the half hour

George Roeder Memorial Parade. Each time I have participated in a charity or memorial ride, it becomes an emotional experience. I know there is a unique and heart touching story that precedes the ride. During bike week, my friend and I took a day and rode to Shipshewana, Indiana. It made for a full day, but we had beautiful white fluffy clouds overhead along with dry weather. It also was Ascension Day which Amish honor in remembrance that Jesus ascended to heaven. Therefore no Amish businesses were open, but we did see many horse and buggies going to and fro. Before the week was over, I had to “take a spin” on a 2 wheel simulator that was provided by one of the vendors. After taking a quick survey on their I-pad, I soon found myself sitting on the 2 wheel and put their virtual simulator glasses on. I had two choices of rides: Highway 1 and the Dragon. Since I had already ridden Highway 1, I thought that would be the easy choice. Wrong! I think I will stick to my Spyder! On July 7, three friends and I will be riding to Mackinac Island for a week. I’ve always wanted to travel there. We want to ride through the “Trail of Trees” along Michigan 119. The Trail of Trees is a 27.5 mile trunkline highway entirely knitted with a ceiling of trees from Harbor Springs, north of Petosky to Cross Village. With sharp twists at Devil’s Elbow and Horseshow Curve, it sounds like the perfect ride experience along with boutiques and eateries to savor.

Another destination I am planning to ride to in July is the New England States. I have driven there 4 times since last October for my son lives in New Hampshire. He is a mountain bike rider and loves adventure. He knows what his mamma loves. It’s great to have him as a personalized tour guide for my adventures. Summer is here and the TRO Championship Bike Show Series is in full swing! This year’s season started off with a pair of Veteran’s themed Bike Shows – the first being the Classics, Customs, and Cages Bike Show at Quaker Steak & Lube Mentor produced in partnerships with Combat Vets 12-7 and then the Spring Biker Bash & Classic Bike Show in Kent that was produced in partnership with American Legion Post 496. Both were first year shows that were fortunate enough to dodge the rain, even though the forecasts were mixed for both. Then the focused shifted to the Championship Bike Show held at Ohio Bike Week. This was an invitational show with invites going out to builders and exhibitors that had previously taken “Best of” Awards at previous TRO Bike Shows. This year’s show was held downtown Sandusky during the first weekend of Bike Week – and the rain held off just enough to get the voting and judging in, before the skies let loose. As wet as it was, though, it couldn’t dampen the spirits of some of the exhibitors – especially Daniel Robey of Columbus that took home the BEST OF SHOW Trophy and Championship Ring for his INKED ROADGLIDE – a 2016 H-D Road Glide recreated by the crew at Evil Iron Customs (www. EvilIronCustoms.com). This is the second year in a row that a bike from Evil Iron has taken the Ring at Ohio Bike Week. This was a big win, though, as there were numerous amazing rolling works of art on display on the Barrel House Pier. Joe Ballard took home the People’s Choice Award for his incredible Tribute Bike – a H-D Sidecar w/ matching trailer done in tribute to all of those that have served our nation – domestic and abroad. Other award winning bikes came from across the Midwest – as West Virginia, PA, Michigan, and Indiana were all well represented. The Bike Show Series Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop these local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals - they are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. MSTA FlyBy Week- Marietta, Ohio, August 19-25, sponsored by Thunder Roads Ohio
Marietta is located on the Ohio river in the southeast corner of Ohio, where the Appalachian mountain region begins. The surrounding area is filled with rolling terrain and the roads are a nice mix of turns and elevation changes. Just across the river is West Virginia, with its own collection of great roads. FlyBy Week- Motorcycle Sport Touring Association's (MSTA) largest regional rally comes to Marietta, offering a full-week celebration of sport touring. Like other MSTA events, FlyBy Week is a riding rally; expect the parking lot to be empty during the day, as attendees will all be out riding the twisty roads of the region. Evenings are filled with good food and drink with plenty of socializing. Once again, we'll be at Baymont Inn & Suites (formerly Best Western Marietta)
a dash for Marietta so they could arrive that evening, ride on Saturday, and go home Sunday. Over the years, those who had a bit more time began arriving on Thursday. Being able to ride rally routes both Friday and Saturday doubles your riding opportunities at the rally, making the trip even more worthwhile. Last year we decided to make the FlyBy into a full week’s event and it's been very well-received. Most attendees still arrive on Thursday or Friday, but those who have time to relax and explore the area come early and enjoy a unique small-rally experience. FlyBy Week activities Every day is a riding day, but there are no large organized group rides at FlyBy Week. You can choose one of the official routes, create your own, go sightseeing or whatever strikes your fancy. Ride solo, with friends in small groups or sign up with one of the open groups if you are looking for someone to ride with.

Routes fall into several categories-
Monday through Thursday Dinner Tours include transportation to nice restaurants in downtown Marietta. In addition to fine dining, this is one of the best opportunities to make friends and get to know MSTA members in an informal small rally atmosphere. Sign up sheets are available at registration.
Destination routes include parks such as Holly River State Park in WV, New River Bridge and Gorge, and popular lunch spots like Hillbilly Hotdogs. Twisty & Technical routes have sharp curves, elevation changes and are best for sport and sport touring bikes. Touring Bike-Friendly routes are easier and straighter. Easy Navigation routes have fewer instructions and are easy to follow from a paper printout. Adventure routes utilize mostly dirt and gravel roads. They do not contain any single-track, steep or extremely rough roads- most have been graded this season and are suitable for all dual-sport and adventure bikes regardless of size or tire selection.
Thursday is the first big day of FlyBy Week. Lots of riders arrive throughout the afternoon and into the evening- more folks to meet, bikes to look at and new people to ride with. The "Outdoor Lounge" opens, with tables and chairs under pop-up shelters. It's located behind the West end of the hotel and becomes the social focus of the rally.
Short routes of less than 100 miles- new for 2019! Each route has a complete description that includes a map, distance, navigation difficulty, lunch stop and highlights. There are links for downloading both paper map and GPS files. Help is always available at registration for printing routes or loading your GPS. Finding someone to ride with
Friday, the traditional Brat Burn cookout starts around 6 PM at the outdoor lounge so everyone can enjoy a casual picnic-style dinner together and socialize. The grills will be kept going until at least 8 PM so if you arrive late, you'll still get a bite to eat. Saturday is the biggest riding day, so even if you only came for the weekend, you'll have a great day of riding with lots of fun folks. Since many attendees only get to ride one day, they want to take advantage and ride one of the longer routes. Once again, we'll have the Brat Burn, but if you want something more, the hotel has a full-service bar and restaurant and there are several others just down the street.
If you are looking for someone to ride with, we will have sign-up sheets for each day so you can choose a group based on desired riding style etc. Registration Fee: $20 for all attendees, both MSTA members and non-members, and includes the Friday and Saturday Brat Burn. IN MEMORY OF TANK We recently lost a true legend within the motorcycle community with the passing of Tank – of Tuff Cycles. We were blessed to have him within our local riding community and regardless of the challenges he faced – he always had an open door at his shop for anyone stopping by. Thunder Rolls 32nd Annual Rolling Thunder
Memorial Day is a time to, not that everyday shouldn’t be, reflect and honor those that have stood in front of to defend our nation, and ultimately cashed that blank check they wrote for the price of freedom. Rolling Thunder, in it’s 32nd year, has served to honor those and bring awareness and closure for those who remain unaccounted for. A reminder to those who accept and disperse those checks, that We The People have not forgotten, nor ever will. Earlier in the year, announcements were made that this would be the last year for Rolling Thunder. The seemingly standard array of “reasons” were given, such as money, logistics, security etc. Hours before the event, the Head Hair in Charge tweeted it will be back in 2020 and beyond, those in charge of the event said “not so fast”, time will tell. The announcement of this being the last however, seemingly prompted many, many more than I personally have seen in the past to make the journey to our nation’s capital to take part in the event.

Many left in the wee hours of the morning to gather at the Pentagon. Many smaller services took place around the area to honor those we were representing today before heading to the staging areas. The result however was a presence unlike I have ever seen in my past years of attendance. Nearly every lot on the premises was bar to bar, fender to fender and even most of the service roads. Many groups and organizations were handing out water, filling what you had or soaking a rag or towel. It was quite the warm day, into the 90’s, something many of us from the east coast hadn’t been in for close to a year. Shade is a premium and every square inch of it was rightly occupied. But, unlike you see at so many “other” demonstrations, there was no violence or rioting. Brotherhood and solidarity in the name of those who stood before us, but sadly that doesn’t make for a good “news” story. The take away from the day was that in a seemingly ironic cosmic twist, Mother Nature bestowed a beautiful, albeit hot, sun filled day with all but wisp’s of clouds in the sky. A sharp contrast to the borderline torrential downpours of the recent years past. As if to almost say, you’ve done our boys and girls proud. Fair Weather Rider With all the rain in the Midwest I thought it prudent to address your riding habits. From what I’ve seen from down here in sunny Florida, it’s a mess up there. I don’t regret the move from Ohio when it comes to riding. We’re in the rainy season in Florida too, but it’s generally much more tolerable. But that brings a question to mind: do you even ride? There are so many clubbers I know that I can’t even tell you the last time I saw them on their motorcycle. Some clubbers act like it’s a hassle to even ride with their club. I’ve heard every excuse about why someone can’t do this or can’t do that. They don’t go anywhere except their clubhouse when they are required to. Hell, some won’t even ride an hour away. Did you join a part time MC? I mean there are part time MCs that exist. But if you’re wearing a Diamond, or supporting a Diamond, don’t you want to be with your club? I hear people in clubs all the time making fun of “weekend warriors” all while they literally do nothing with or for their club Sunday through Thursday or Friday. What does that make you? Many clubhouses in Florida only open one or two nights a month. Not mine, but some others. That’s been one of the hardest things to understand since I moved. Maybe times change, I guess. But I’m of the old school society that is a clubber every day of the week. Open your house or ride every weekend, if nothing else for the comradery of your own fellowship. I am told stories all the time from our
gray bearded brothers about how they’d show up at the clubhouse on Friday after work and not leave until Sunday night or even Monday morning to head back to work. All weekend long there were clubs coming and going, parties raging all night, and people swinging from the rafters. That’s a rare event these days.
you are really missing out on 90% of what it’s about to be in an MC. Ripping it down the road in a tight pack with your knees in the breeze alongside your brothers is one of the best experiences many will never know. So, no matter rain or shine, get on your motorcycle and don’t be a fairweather rider!

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Training Scars by Greg Ellifritz Training scars...we all have them. I’m not talking about training scars like the black eye you get when your partner goes a little too hard while sparring or the scars you get when you cut your finger trying to quickly open your fighting knife. The training scars I’m talking about are the unintentional bad habits you have acquired during the course of your training. All training, no matter how realistic, is artificial. It isn’t actual combat. In the interests of safety or convenience, we sometimes do things in training that we wouldn’t want to do in combat. If we continue to perform those artificial actions over a long period of time, they become habits. If negative, those habits are called training scars. Sometimes training scars are inconsequential. Sometimes they are fatal. Let me give you an example: Some of the first identified fatal training scars in the law enforcement context occurred in a gunfight in 1970, later referred to as The Newhall Massacre. During this gunfight, four California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were killed in less than five minutes. The officers displayed several training scars that day, which may have lead to their deaths.
The officers were not used to the recoil of their .357 Magnum handguns, having only fired .38 Special rounds in training. Their lack of familiarity with the magnum rounds may have contributed to their poor shooting performance. One officer carried his shotgun at port arms position with the shotgun stock resting on his belt and the muzzle in the air, while approaching two dangerous armed criminals. That was the
position officers carried their shotguns on the range for “safety” purposes. Another officer fired his Remington 870 so fast that he actually ejected a live round. He was killed with an empty shotgun in his hand. It has been alleged that rapid fire shotgun training was not part of CHP’s firearms curriculum at the time and the officer’s lack of familiarity with the weapon lead to this potentially fatal error.

All of the above examples in this gunfight could be considered training scars. The actions that the officers unconsciously performed in training influenced their performance in combat. Not all training scars are as dramatic as these examples, but they can still reduce your performance when you are thrust into a deadly encounter. Modern examples In all my years as a full-time firearms and self defense instructor, I’ve seen many examples of negative training scars. See if you recognize any of these: Shooters getting sloppy with the use of cover. Since some pistol competitions allow competitors to stick 50 percent of their body mass outside of cover on a barricade stage before assessing a penalty, many shooters will use their cover improperly so that they can move faster or get a better score. Constant repetition of improper cover use during competition leads to people getting shot in real life. Malfunctions. I see this one with older police officers or soldiers. When they have a firearms malfunction in training, they stop and raise their hand so that the instructor can clear the jam safely. Because malfunction clearance is one of the more hazardous activities in firearms training, some range officers won’t let their students clear a jammed gun. What happens when one of those students experiences a malfunction on the street? No movement. Some instructors or ranges have rules restricting the shooter’s movement. The student gets thousands of repetitions firing a weapon while standing still. What do you think he will do in a real gunfight? You guessed it; he will stand still, even if moving to cover or retreating would be a better tactical option. Empty gun procedures. What do most shooters do when they run completely out of ammunition on the shooting line? They holster their weapon and proceed to reload their empty magazines. Is that what we want them to do in real life if they run completely out of bullets? On my range when a student runs out of bullets for his primary handgun during training, he must either draw his backup gun and finish the stage or retreat to cover and draw an alternate weapon (knife, ASP Baton, OC Spray, etc.). I don’t want students to get in the habit of going into “administrative mode” as soon as their guns are empty. Separating empty hand and firearms training. In the police and military world, training with firearms is a separate and distinct activity from training empty hand combatives or training with less lethal weapons. Oftentimes, firearms instructors are not defensive tactics instructors and neither are impact weapons instructors. This leads to students having distinctly separated skill sets. They are unable to smoothly transition between force options because they have never been trained in a realistic context. Real world violence is often a match between people with differing skill sets and differing weapons. shooting and back to empty hands again is a crucial skill for everyone to master. When the disciplines are not trained in an integrated manner, negative training scars are the result. Sporting Rules. Every competitive martial art has different rules. Fighters spend many hours training within the context of the rules of their sport. When they end up in a real fight, they continue to obey the artificial rules imposed by their particular style. I’ve seen Tae Kwon Do fighters who won’t punch to the body, wrestlers who turn their backs on opponents and get choked, boxers who won’t throw a knee strike in the clinch, and ju-jitsu practitioners who don’t know what to do when a “chemically enhanced” attacker doesn’t tap out on the street because he feels no pain. Consider how the rules of your sport leave training scars that adversely affect your combative abilities. Firing a set number of rounds in training. I see this one all the time. Officers draw, fire two shots, and immediately holster without regard to whether or not they hit the target or if the rounds (when using Simunition FX marking cartridges) had the desired effect. They do so unconsciously because some stage of their state firearms qualification course consists of doing just that. Famed NYPD Stakeout Squad member Jim Cirillo recounts a similar situation in one of his interviews. He was in a very close-range gunfight where he fired five shots at the robber from the hip. He then stopped shooting and holstered even though the robber was still standing and his gun was still loaded with another round. It seems that one of his stages of qualification was “Draw, fire five hip shots, and holster.” He had done that so many times on the range that he did it in combat as well. Always vary the number of rounds you fire in each practice session. These are just a few of the most common training scars I deal with every day as a trainer. If you think about it, you could probably identify half a dozen different training scars that affect your individual performance. Your goal should be to analyze which scars are negative and to eliminate them. Healing the scars In order to best eliminate training scars, a comprehensive knowledge of what actually happens in combat is a necessity. Combat is not the same as a shooting match or martial arts competition. It’s even less similar to any of the shooting drills you likely did in the police academy or in your CCW course. Strange things happen in combat, and the more familiar you become with these anomalies, the more prepared you will be to effectively deal with them. Read everything you can find about the psychology of combat. Study newspaper, magazine, and television stories that involve violence. Talk to people who have been in fights or shoot outs. In short, learn everything possible about what occurs during combative encounters. It is only when you have a realistic idea of what THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
happens in real-life combat that you can take a look at your training and make it more realistic. As you continue to learn about violence, start analyzing your training. The refinement of your training processes should be a constant activity. You will always learn more and be able to make your training better. Take a look at every aspect of your training and ask yourself, “Would what I’m doing here be a good thing to do in combat?” If not, change it. A video camera or a knowledgeable and observant friend can help with this. Have a friend watch your training to help you identify potential negative training scars. If you can’t enlist the help of a friend, set up a camera and review your next training session. Make it your goal to analyze every move you make with the objective of eliminating any motion or activity that would be counterproductive in combat. After you have eliminated as many negative training scars as possible, start building positive training habits. Start doing activities in training that you want to do in real life combat. If you think it’s a good idea to move in a gunfight, fire every round while moving or practice moving laterally with every drawstroke. If you think it would be a good idea to visually scan for additional opponents after a gunfight, build a scanning procedure into your practice regimen. The opportunities are endless and you will likely never be finished. Strive to identify and eliminate all of your negative training scars while replacing them with positive training habits. We’ve learned a lot about training since that terrible day in 1970 when four police officers were killed. You have advantages in technology and knowledge that those officers could have never imagined. Don’t squander your opportunities and forget the lessons that those men gave their lives to teach. KNOBLE MOTO NOTES: Trip Checklist As we cruise through summer, many riders consider taking long rides or trips. Personally, I live for taking motorcycle trips. I have checked off 26 states and Ontario, Canada. I feel it is the best way to travel because in a car, you are disconnected from the world, but on a bike, you are one with everything around you. Somewhere I once read it described as, “In a car you see the world through the car window. It's as if you are watching a scene on TV. On a motorcycle, you are part of the scene. YOU see, hear, feel, and smell the world around you.” I would encourage every motorcyclist to take an overnight trip at least once. Its true adventure seeking, and life an affirming experience. I was recently at Skidmark Garage talking with another member about the possibilities of taking an early 70's Ironhead Sportster on a cross country trip. He had his reservations because of the bike's reputation for questionable reliability. I advised him that it can be done, but a few things need to be considered first. I realized this would make for a good checklist for any motorcycle trip: • Consider the maintenance intervals of a few items on the bike and the projected mileage of the trip. Will something likely need replaced during the trip? If so, be sure you packed the appropriate tools. • Plan on going over the bike each night in the parking lot. Any new signs of leaks? Any bolts look like they are starting to back out? Does anything need adjustments? Are there any items known to be problematic to your make and model of bike? • Carry spare spark plugs and ignition points. Perhaps a used throttle or clutch cable? Something that is functional and

would work in a pinch. Maybe a spare set of carburetor gaskets and a fuel filter, or electrical tape and some spare pieces of wire too. • Do any electrical connections need dielectric grease? It is likely you will encounter rain on a trip. *Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease sold at most auto parts stores. You can put it inside your electrical connectors. This will keep rain and moisture out. It is especially handy in spark plug boots for keep the rain from shorting your plugs out. • Get some rain gear. If you travel enough, you will get caught in the rain. *The cheap rain suit from the local big box store will not hold up at 60mph. If you are a non-helmet rider, do you have a plan to cover your face in the rain? (it really hurts). • Assemble a basic tool kit of the tools you have noticed you use often. Also, zip ties and duct tape.

Have a plan “B”: I have AAA Plus/RV. It will only tow up to 100 miles, but that should get me to a U-Haul or Penske truck rental, where I can hopefully load the bike in the back of a rental truck and drive home. Basic Rider
Become an instructor: motorcycle.ohio.gov/ instructors.stm
For newer riders. Earn a waiver for the motorcycle endorsement skill test. No experience necessary. Motorcycles and helmets provided.
Basic for Returning Riders
Skill test waiver course for riders over 18 who have been riding with a temporary permit for at least 1 year. Also great for those returning to riding after an extended time away.
Basic Rider 2
A great early-season refresher, to bond with a new-to-you motorcycle, or to gain experience / improve control riding with a passenger. Requires a valid Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) or motorcycle license or endorsement. Passengers permitted, only for riders with a motorcycle license or endorsement. Successful completion earns the BMV skill test waiver for a motorcycle endorsement.
Advanced Rider
For experienced riders. Complements and refines existing skills and helps with personal risk assessment. Motorcycle endorsement required.

You can use ANYTHING meat mix in these pies and make them amazing. Try making Italian ones with sausage pepperoni and a little sauce with cheese, or how about Mexican flavored meat with some salsa and cheese? Feta, lamb and spinach? How about eggs, bacon and cheese? The ONLY limit is your imagination
I've been craving shrimp all day and this is one of my FAVORITE ways to make them!!
Old School Hand Pie
(basic recipe)
Sunset Shrimp
Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers)
Serves 4 (or ONE hungry biker chick)
1lb ground beef, chicken, pork etc ½ cup minced veggies
10+ skewers
Salt and pepper to taste
½ cup lime juice
1 can crescent rolls
½ cup orange juice
1 - 1 ½ cup cheese
¼ pineapple juice
1 egg mixed with 1 tbsp water
½ cup honey 2 tbsp garlic, minced
Preheat oven to temp noted on crescent roll can and lightly coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.
½ tsp pepper
In a skillet, cook you veggies until soft, then add in the meat and cook through.
1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional) 1 ½ pounds large shrimp, peeled (tails on) and deveined Mix ingredients together in a bowl and then soak the shrimp in the mix for about 30 minutes Put about 6-5 shrimp on each skewer (more or less to suit your crowd) Grill over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side, basting with the remaining citrus mixture Don’t overcook – the citrus helps cook the shrimp a little so the grill only adds the char marks and a bit of flavor
Unroll COLD dough and separate into 4 rectangles. The dough will be cut diagonally to make the crescent rolls, just pinch that line together then lightly flour a rolling pin and roll the rectangle out a bit Take ¼ of the meat mix and place on one half of the dough Add ¼ of the cheese, then fold the other half over the mix Make sure all the mix is tucked in then use a fork to crimp the edges closed so nothing spills
Serve hot!
Transfer to your prepared cooking sheet then brush with the egg wash

Bake according to the tie on the crescent roll can or until golden brown. Remember everything inside is already cooked so you’re just cooking the dough Allow to cool for a few minutes and serve. I often serve mine with a sauce that compliments the filling. (Marinara for Italian fillings, salsa for Mexican fillings, you get the point)

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND
A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead all die. In order to get into heaven though, they must go up 100 steps, each containing a joke. The trick is that they must not laugh. The brunette goes first and laughs at the first step and is sent to hell. The redhead goes next and makes it to the seventh step before she laughs. Finally, it’s the blondes turn. She gets all the way to the 99th step before she laughs. God asks her, “You were so close, why did you laugh?” and she responds, “I just got the first joke!” A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: A halfgallon of 2% milk, A carton of eggs, A quart of orange juice, A head of romaine lettuce, A 2 lb. can of coffee, And a 1 lb. package of bacon. As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, "You must be single." The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was Intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said "Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct, but how on earth did you know that?" The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly."
A man and his wife were playing golf. The man tees off and his ball veers way off to the right, breaking the window of a house. The wife says you must go and apologize and pay for the window. Both the man and his wife walk up to the house, ring the door but no one answers. He opens the door and inside, next to the windowhe sees a broken vase with his golf ball laying on the floor. Suddenly a man comes out of a nearby room, the golfer starts to apologize for breaking his window and the vase. The man inside the house says, “No, don’t apologize, I am a genie and have been stuck in that vase for 10,000 years, you have rescued me and I owe you deeply. For helping me I will grant three wishes. I will give you one, your lovely wife one and I would like to keep one for myself.” He asks the man what he wishes for. The man thought awhile and said, “I wish for a million dollars.” The genie waves his hand and said, “A million dollars, it’s yours, it has been deposited into your bank account.” He asks the wife what is her wish. She says, “I wish for a condominium in Hawaii.” The genie waves his hand and says, “A condominium in Hawaii, it’s yours.” The genie continues, “Now it is my turn.” He thinks for awhile and says, “You know its been 10,000 years since I have had a woman, could I make love to your wife?” The man thinks for a while and says, “Honey, he gave us a million dollars and a condominium in Hawaii, the least you could do is make love to him.” She agrees and they both go to the back bedroom. After making passionate love, the woman says, “I can’t believe that my husband let you do this to me.” The genie says, “And I can’t believe that your husband still believes in genies.”
Three blondes are sitting by the side of a river holding fishing poles with the lines in the water. A Game Warden comes up behind them, taps them on the shoulder and says, “Excuse me, ladies, I’d like to see your fishing licenses.” “We don’t have any,” replied the first blonde. “Well, if you’re going to fish, you need fishing licenses,” said the Game Warden. “But officer,” replied the second blonde, “we aren’t fishing. We all have magnets at the end of our lines and we’re collecting debris off the bottom of the river.” The Game Warden lifted up all the lines and, sure enough, there were horseshoe magnets tied on the end of each line. “Well, I know of no law against it,” said the Game Warden. “Take all the debris you want.” And with that, he left. As soon as the Game Warden was out of sight, the three blondes started laughing hysterically. “What a dumb Fish Cop,” the second blonde said to the other two. “Doesn’t he know that there are steelhead trout in this river?” An angry wife was complaining about her husband spending all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The same as you I suppose," she replied. So, the husband ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well, there you go," cried the husband. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!"
