FEBRUARY 2018

BY JOYCE ELAINE

DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC

February 2018 It’s a cold Saturday afternoon and as I’m working on some writing projects, I thought I’d get started on this article. What’s really funny is I have an old episode of Roseanne playing on the TV and just as I was typing the date on this article, I heard Roseanne yell at Becky that she can’t have a motorcycle because “Bikes kill!” Life is weird sometimes… I haven’t bought new heated gear yet. I’ve decided to wait until next month at the Timonium Bike Show to try to find something. In the meantime, I’m still pondering my thoughts about riding. Something occurred to me a couple of weeks ago. Have you ever had a day where you were planning on going riding but you had a little voice in your head tell you not to ride? That has happened to me a few times in my riding career and I’ve always listened to that little voice and wouldn’t go riding like I had been planning to do. I’ve heard other bikers say they have experienced this before too. Most of them listen to the voice and don’t get on the bike, but some ignore it and go anyways. My point is, this whole thing of me not being sure of how much riding will be in my future has something to do with that voice. There is that little voice in my head telling me it’s time to stop. I’m not ready to listen to that voice totally yet but it sure is a very loud voice! I’ve written about the safety of riding being one of the reasons I’ve been thinking about quitting because of how distracted drivers have been lately. They are getting worse and it’s scary how many accidents there are because of distracted drivers. I’ve realized, though, that there are some bikers out there that put other bikers at risk too. For instance, a few years ago, I was riding home from OC Bike week with my friend and her boyfriend (ex-boyfriend now). Her boyfriend was one of the worst people to ride with and I hated it! As we were going down Route 50, he was in the front, then my friend, and then me. He would be riding the speed limit or faster and then all of a sudden would slow down to 35 mph for no reason at all. Being the one in the back meant I had the cars on my ass, getting mad because we slowed down so much when it was unnecessary to do so. I thought this idiot was going to get me killed. After we got off the Bay Bridge, I broke the biker code and went around them and took off and did the rest of the ride on my own. There are bikers worse than that, though. I got an email on my Facebook page last month and I didn’t even bother to respond to it. The guy meant well…I think…but it showed how there are some “crazy” bikers out there. I

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

won’t say his name because evidently he did me a favor by not putting his thoughts about my articles out there for everyone to read…not that I would have cared if he did. He told me in his email to me that I’m not enjoying riding anymore because I’m too busy looking at the daisies. I happen to love the surrounding that goes on around me while I’m out riding. That’s why I attach my camera to my bike…I’ve pulled some really gorgeous pictures off of my rides and it’s one of the biggest reasons I like riding. According to this guy, though, that’s a boring reason to ride and I’d enjoy myself more if I “rode like I’m going to beat someone down.” Now, I’m not in the business of beating people down but to me, that means that I should ride fast and careless. I mean, if you are so mad that you are going to “beat someone down” aren’t you usually careless with your actions? If that is how this guy rides, then he’s not only putting himself in danger but also the people he’s riding with and people in cages. It didn’t stop there, though. He also said I should “grab the throttle like I want to get it off and be a little bit of a dick on the highway.” I’m sorry, but I don’t think being a dick on the highway while I’m on the bike will help out the reputation of bikers. I think the worst thing he said, though, was that I need to “start bar hopping because that’s been most real rider’s passion for like six decades.” That’s a direct quote from his email. Soooo, he’s telling me that bikers are passionate about riding because of the bar hopping they do? That doesn’t sound right to me. That sounds dumb for more than one reason. I don’t drink if I’m on my bike…period! Bar hopping does nothing for me…not to mention, I stopped hanging out in bars when I was like 26 or so…it’s called growing up! He also told me I lack the “crazy scooter trash mentality that is the core of the riding experience.” Maybe it’s his crazy scooter trash mentality that gets people killed. I didn’t want to give this guy the time of the day, but honestly, it’s bikers like him that give bikers a bad name. Of course, it didn’t help that five days later, he sent me a really unattractive picture of himself. I didn’t respond to that message either. My point is, that not only are drivers in cars a danger to bikers, but there are other bikers who are a danger to bikers. I’ll just keep my distance from those fools and keep doing what I’ve been doing. I’ve gotten some great emails from people who have really opened my mind up about my thoughts and I am grateful to those people. You are the bikers I want to be around who give bikers a good name. Is it spring yet?

GOOD AND EVIL Don’t get upset about evil people. Don’t be jealous of those who do wrong. They are like grass and other green plants that dry up quickly and then die. So trust in the Lord and do good. Live on your land and be dependable. Enjoy serving the Lord, and he will give you whatever you ask for. Depend on the Lord. Trust in him, and he will help you. He will make it as clear as day that you are right. Everyone will see that you are being fair. Trust in the Lord and wait quietly for his help. Don’t be angry when people make evil plans and succeed. Don’t become so angry and upset that you, too, want to do evil. The wicked will be destroyed, but those who call to the Lord for help will get the land he promised. In a short time there will be no more evil people. You can look for them all you want, but they will be gone. Humble people will get the land God promised, and they will enjoy peace. The wicked plan bad things for those who are good. They show their teeth in anger at them. But our Lord will laugh at them. He will make sure they get what they deserve. The wicked draw their swords to kill the poor and the helpless. They aim their arrows to murder all who live right. But their bows will break, and their swords will pierce their own hearts. A few good people are better than a large crowd of those who are evil. The wicked will be destroyed, but the Lord cares for those who are good. The Lord protects

6

pure people all their life. Their reward will continue forever. When trouble comes, good people will not be destroyed. When times of hunger come, good But evil people are the Lord’s enemies, and they will be destroyed. Their valleys will dry up and burn. They will be destroyed completely. The wicked borrow money and never pay it back. But good people are kind and generous. Everyone the Lord blesses will get the land he promised. Everyone he curses will be destroyed. The Lord shows us how we should live, and he is pleased when he sees people living that way. If they stumble, they will not fall, because the Lord reaches out to steady them. I was young, and now I am old, but I have never seen good people left with no one to help them; I have never seen their children begging for food. They are kind and generous, and their children are a blessing. Stop doing anything evil and do good, and you will always have a place to live. The Lord loves what is right, and he will never leave his followers without help. He will always protect them, …. (Psalm37:1-28)

FROM ACROSS THE POND “WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY?”

BY ANDY TALLONE Classic-British-Motorcycles.com his second issue of the New Year marks the twentythird edition of this humble column, “From Across the Pond”. Over these almost-two years, weʼve taken a journey across the sweeping expanse of pop culture, world history, motorcycle history, and British motorcycle history in particular. We’ve looked at motorcycle brands, individual models and types, industry luminaries and villains, motorcycle shows and museums, and more. Itʼs been a good ride. Iʼve enjoyed writing them, and I hope youʼve enjoyed reading them. To kick off this new year, I thought it might be appropriate, after our time together, to introduce myself, my website, and my back story as it relates to classic British motorcycles. I hope it doesnʼt come off like Iʼm full of myself. Iʼm just a guy who loves these old motorcycles, been playinʼ with ʻem my whole life, and canʼt stop talkinʼ about ʻem. My name is Andy Tallone, I live in Northern California in the Mother Lode (where gold was discovered during the Gold Rush). I was born in 1955, which is smack-dab in the middle of the Baby Boom (1946 to 1964). Guys +/- a few years of my age cut our teeth on British bikes when they were brand new and/ or cheap and common used bikes. The last BSA was built in 1972. The last Norton in 1975. Triumph struggled along until 1983, but produced very few bikes during those last few years. I graduated high school in 1973, so I almost missed the entire British bike boom...but I didn’t miss it. When I turned 13 I bought my first motorcycle, a 1965 Honda 55 with a stepthrough frame. I grew up in the small country town of Hanford in the Central Valley in California, and every 13-year-old seemed to have a motorcycle, and despite not having a drivers license, and looking even younger than my age, I got around pretty well, riding along the railroad track all the way into and Circa 1971, thatʼs me in through town, then taking cowboy boots & Triumph T-shirt, riding my buddy’s Honda 90.

T

side-streets and alleys to get just about anywhere I needed to go. When I got my learnersʼ permit at 15, I got a Honda 160, but as soon as my buddies both bought Triumph 650s in our sophomore year, I bought a beat-up old 1964 Triumph TR6. Today weʼd call it a ‘bobberʼ. Stock forks but tons of chrome, a peanut tank, ‘banana seatʼ and a sissy bar. We rode the wheels off those bikes. I later attempted to build it into a cafe racer, but didnʼt have the money to do it right, or even finish it. The constant problems with old British motorcycles made me

Circa 1973, me and my Carabela MX bike, just back from a race. a regular customer at Clawsonʼs Motorcycle Shop in Hanford. Ron Clawson, aka: “The Claw”, fixed old Brit bikes and sold new Bridgestones (Japanese 2-stroke twins). As we got to know each other (I was there a lot) he hired me as a mechanic. Not that I knew how to work on bikes...I didnʼt. But he taught me. And I loved it. I was “The Kid”. Every shop seemed to have one. The Kid was the brunt of all the jokes, got all the crappy jobs, the bad hours, and got stuck cleaning the bathroom. But as a 16-year-old working in the coolest motorcycle shop in town, I was the envy of all my friends. Being The Kid was almost like a sacred duty, to take the abuse, while learning and growing in the company, sort of earning your stripes. While I worked for him, he took on several significant franchises including BMW (when few Americans had seen one), Moto Guzzi (even rarer still), and Triumph/BSA/Norton just as the British motorcycle industry began to fall apart. He also acquired a franchise for a Mexican-built line of motocross bikes called Carabela. He bought a brand new 200, I got a 125 and we went racing together. I was never much good, but Ron was awesome! Heʼd been racing his whole life and was fearless on the track. In 2012 I met up with The Claw at his new Kawasaki-Suzuki dealership in Tulare CA. At 71, he was still racing motocross in the ʻold-timerʼ class. Unfortunately, cancer claimed Ron Clawson a few years back. I wish Iʼd have hunted him down sooner.

sometimes, having to make money at your passion takes some of the pleasure out of it. And I found I could make more money in real estate. I closed Camaro Headquarters in 2003, putting my focus on real estate again, soon finding my place in the Mobile Home Park industry, and today thatʼs all I do: buy, sell, fix, run, and turn-around MHPs. Around 2000 I started building the Yellow Bike, a custom Triumph Bonneville cafe racer of my own design. Itʼs the bike I always wanted to build as a kid but never could afford to. I rode it up and down the state, won shows with it, had magazine articles written about it, then stupidly sold it at the Vegas auction in 2009. It took until last year to track it down again, and I bought it back. Iʼm bringing it back to life as I write this.

2012: Me & “The Claw” in modern times After graduation, I got out of bikes, and got into cars...fast cars...muscle cars. Before long, I was working at Hanford Auto Supply, a NAPA store. They were the biggest and best auto parts store around, and they had THE best automotive machine shop in the Central Valley. I worked as a parts man and an apprentice automotive machinist and learned a helluva lot from this ornery WWII vet named Leonard Tripp. He owned Hanford Auto and several other stores, and was a brilliant machinist. I was privileged to learn from him, despite all the verbal abuse I had to endure. All the while (1973-1976) I owned one of the fastest cars in the area, my black 1955 Chevy Nomad. It had a ʼ65 Corvette 375-horse 327 with the original Rochester mechanical fuel injection on it. It was an exotic-looking engine that puzzled everyone who saw it. But it was fast, way fast!! And because everyone else was running carburetors, I could shift about 500 rpm later, which meant maybe 2 shifts instead of 3. I won a lot of races that way.

Me & Yellow Bike on a ride through the Santa Cruz Mountains CA to the Pacific.

A good day at Camaro Headquarters In 1977 I started my real estate career, and got out of cars and bikes for a time. 40 years later, Iʼm still doing real estate, nearing retirement. During that time I also owned a lot of other businesses and tried some different things. From 1995 to 1998 I ran a classic car dealership in the San Francisco Bay Area. Then I opened my own dealership called Camaro Headquarters where I sold 500 Camaros in 5 years, along with around 250 other cars. Iʼve always been into classic cars, so this was nothing new for me, I was sort of living my dream. But Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

FEBRUARY 2018 9

Iʼm a few years from retirement, and plan to spend it doing car and motorcycle events for as long as Iʼm able. In June my wife and I are covering Hemmings Motor Newsʼ “The Great Race”, through New England and Nova Scotia, and we plan to actually participate in the 2019 Great Race (location not yet announced). And every August youʼll find us in Reno, Nevada for Hot August Nights, a city-wide, week-long celebration of American car culture. Shows, cruises, drag races, burn-out contests, auctions, autocross and more, all car guy stuff. This year Iʼm hosting a reunion up there with all my old high school buds. Next week, we leave for Scottsdale for Auction Week, where Barrett-Jackson and 4 or 5 other big auction houses will sell off a few thousand classic cars. Then, weʼre off to Vegas for Motorcycle Auction Week, where Mecum will auction off 1,750 classic bikes, and Bonhams another 200 or so. Iʼll be covering that one for this column, next month. Iʼll also be doing live feeds all week long (Tuesday through Saturday, January 23 through 27) from the Vegas Auctions on my Facebook-page (ClassicBritish-Motorcycles.com).

I do all this stuff for my 2 favorite websites. The first is the source for this column. I launched Classic-British-Motorcycles. com in 2010 with the intention of building it into the worldʼs greatest website about classic Brit bikes. Itʼs an online index or catalog of all these great old motorcycles, organized by make, model and year. Each has its own page with eye-popping original pictures (most of which I took myself), specifications, history and more. We also cover classic motorcycle shows, auctions, rides, clubs, museums, and events. Itʼs grown to 476 pages of dynamite high-quality, highly-focused content, and draws some 200,000 hits per month. Classic-BritishMotorcycles.com has a special importance to me because our sacred sport is fading fast, as the old guys who have always cherished these bikes fade themselves. If a new generation of British bike enthusiasts doesnʼt take the ball and run with it, these wonderful old machines will go the way of the dodo. So, Iʼve made it my mission, through the website, through this

column, and any other means available to promote these bikes, introduce them to a wider audience, and show them why theyʼre not only cool, but important. I strive to attract the new blood we need, and help to show them the way. Iʼve been working on plans to take this mission to the next level, but will not have the time to undertake such a monumental task until I am retired. Hopefully, it will keep until then.

My other website is American-Muscle-Cars.net launched in 2014. I love this website! Muscle cars are a huge part of my life, and I hope my retirement. I have a lot of fun with this site also, going to car shows, auctions, and various other events, and like my bike site, it chronicles every muscle car, old & new. But, while itʼs also now up to 430 pages, it only brings in around 35,000 hits per month. Unlike my Brit site which is a big fish in a very little pond (classic British motorcycles are a very tiny niche), my car site is the opposite. The classic car niche is enormous, and Iʼm just a little guy. I canʼt hope to compete with the thousands of mega-sites out there. But hey, Iʼm just havinʼ fun. I will continue to write this column each month, as long as they let me, covering all the interesting details of a subject that I know very well, and care about very deeply, classic British motorcycles, and their impact on society and the world. I hope this column over these past many months has made an impression on you, introducing you to a side of British bikes that you may not have been aware of. Please pass it along. Donʼt be afraid to tell your riding buddies about some cool story about British bikes that you picked up in this column. In fact, better still, give ‘em a copy and tell ‘em to read it. In this way, you can become part of my sacred mission which I am now calling “Save the Brit Bike”. Thanks in advance. Youʼll be hearing more about it in the near future, God willing. All the best to you, be well, enjoy life, ride safe, and God bless America. Please visit my websites at www.Classic-British-Motorcycles.com www.American-Muscle-Cars.net

These days, it seems that keeping things simple is a lost art. With tacticallyoriented training methods at an all-time high for focus; the platforms seen within the classes tells a story of “pay-to-play” being prevalent within a decent part of the community. It may be odd to see that term being used but, there’s enough proof to say that the assessment is correct. Practice is foregone for the “high-speed”, and you must buy into the latest and greatest of weaponmounted equipment to be a part of the “high-speed”. The rifle platform, chosen primarily due to what can be obtained with extreme ease in the United States, will revolve around the 5.56mm caliber. This obviously means the usage of STANAG magazines, steel or otherwise. This leaves a lot of rifle platforms available to choose from. Despite having a lovehate relationship with the platform, the best option boils down to the AR-15. I view the platform as being overly complicated due to the amount of parts that are within the receivers themselves. There are a lot of parts that could fail and send you to an early grave. However, it’s the rifle I would take into the worst of places. If the SHTF tomorrow, there are plenty of parts laying around for a rifle to be repaired or even built up from nothing with. If I was to start a build tomorrow for “the perfect AR”, it would certainly be along the lines of this one. Starting from the top, a 14.5-inch Daniel Defense M4V7LW upper receiver. The muzzle has a pinned and welded Dead Air Silencers flash hider mounted to it: for the minimum overall barrel length as defined by the ATF. The upper lays the base for a Trijicon MRO, on a Geissele Super Precision mount, and a Geissele Mark-8 MLOK Modular Rail system. On the end of the rail is a fixed Daniel Defense front sight and a Surefire X-300 flashlight. This allows for permanent cowitness of the MRO with the front post, while keeping weight off the sides by mounting the light forward of the sight assembly. The lower is a Bravo Company BCM4-series which comes standard with BCM Mod-3 pistol grip mainstream is the latter, with SOCOMs’ decision to run MLOK on all of their and a BCM Mod-0 buttstock. The sling that comes highly recommended is the future rifle platforms, but that means there has been a lot of cheap KeyMod accessories being dumped for MLOK. However, the further down the road Vickers sling from Blue Force Gear. This is a good example of a proper “go-to” rifle platform. For all intent and we go, the less in the way of ancillary and replacement parts are going to be purpose, the rifle is to remain lightweight. The integrated rail should be a available for KeyMod. Simply keep in mind the first rule of building or creating a setup. Keep it slimline choice and an equally minimal style of equipment should be mounted on it. A weapon-mounted light is a must-have for friend-or-foe identification. A simple, stupid. If you want to see extended versions of these articles, then visit www. lot of people are hung up on the use of a laser; but, the fact of the matter is that it is too confusing for most people – who do not practice with their platforms thearmednovelist.com. Questions or comments? Email thisistheline3@gmail.com. on a regular basis. For home-defense, the center of a projected white-light beam will work in the exact same manner should you not be able to bring the rifle up to look down the sights. A modern rifle calls for a modern red-dot optic. It doesn’t have to be an MRO, as there are a lot of options on the market. From the Aimpoint T1/H1 options, at the top, down to the affordable SIG-Sauer ROMEO-4 and -5 red-dot sights. It boils down to what kind of reticle and battery life options, and whether you want night-vision capability on some models. I have my eye on both the MRO, with a ScalarWorks LEAP mount, and the standard SIG ROMEO-4A. I also would mount either one of the Daniel Defense front sight assemblies or a ScalarWorks PEAK fixed front sight assemblies for cowitnessing. If my battery is dead, whether I run a rear BUIS or not, the center of the glass is a general reference for where to put the permanent front post. Ancillary furniture is up to each individual. I’m not partial to the angle of the BCM pistol grip and I may consider a more slim-lined buttstock. The rail integrated system comes in two popular flavors: KeyMod and MLOK. The Best of Both Worlds. For some this may mean an old and new school muscle car. For others, maybe that CVO Ultra Glide for the roads and a bobber to bounce around town on. But for one gentleman, Mr. Zem Wise, a proud soldier in our Army National Guard, it’s a classic show-stopping head-turning custom ‘02 Suzuki GXSR- 1000 rocking a phatty 330 rear, a few top secret performance upgrades and a custom paint job by Artistic Creation Kustoms making up what’s known on the streets as The JOKER. Additionally, lending a hand and being the primary builder in creating some head-turning customs for others as well. When feeling the need to cruise and flex in the bagger world, Mr. Wise hits the scene with his custom ‘04 Road Glide also painted by Artistic Creation Kustoms rolling big with a 30” chrome front rim and a custom “Grudge Setup” six speaker audio system by Bagger Boyz that will easily move the crowd and get the bodies moving as demonstrated during the Team Money Cycles Sound Off Series among several other competitions and bike nights. But this Rider is more than all show. He’s spent more then 20+

years serving and protecting this country of ours with tours of duty throughout the world. Additionally, his club Down-n-Dirty MC (President of the Northern VA chapter) hosts an annual toy drive benefiting neighborhood churches and organizations as well as other charitable efforts of support throughout the year. Never let it be said, you can’t have the Best of Both Worlds and have fun doing so.

Tank and neck frame are signed by Peter Fonda ICONIC and IRONIC are two words that come to my mind when asked what I would use to describe Fred Pulliam and his “Billy Bike”. Iconic is the motorcycle, a CMC recreation of the famous panhead chopper ridden by the actor Dennis Hopper in the 1969 movie “Easy Rider”. The irony is that, that same year Fred turned 17 and purchased his very first motorcycle and where his passion for everything “BIKER” started. As he watched that movie and saw that bike, he thought to himself, “ Now that’s what a true chopper is all about “, and he vowed that one day he would own that bike. His dream would come true! You can sum up Fred in the same two words as those that are the title of the cult classic, and that is that Fred is a true “EASY RIDER”.

A dozen great motorcycling songs

REPORT

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The renewable fuels mandates released in late November by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are higher than the 2017 levels and the 2018 levels the agency proposed in June. The EPA’s final 2018 Renewable Volume Obligations call for 19.29 billion gallons of renewable fuel— primarily corn ethanol—to be blended into the nation’s gasoline supplies. That figure is higher than the 19.24 billion gallons the agency proposed in June and slightly higher than the 19.28 billion gallons required in 2017. The EPA mandates continue to rise, even as cars become more fuel efficient and drivers travel fewer miles each year. Forcing more ethanol into fewer gallons of gasoline results in higher-ethanol blends for consumers. Most gasoline sold in the United States contains 10 percent ethanol (E10), which all modern automobile engines and many motorcycle engines are built to accommodate. However, if the RFS requirements continue to be implemented, it will result in higher-ethanol blends—such as E15 (15 percent ethanol)— to become more prevalent at retail outlets. An increase in the supply of E15 can lead to inadvertent misfueling—caused by blender pumps and confusing pump labels—by motorcyclists. None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use in the United States is approved by the EPA to operate on ethanol blends higher than 10 percent. The AMA also is concerned the increased reliance on ethanol could further reduce the availability of E0 fuel, which is necessary to operate older and vintage motorcycles. STURGIS, S.D. — The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame plans to double in size within three years, with its Hall of Fame section getting its own campus. Meanwhile, the museums’ Main Street location will get a major revitalization, courtesy of donations from supporters, board members and the Law Tigers. Preliminary plans are complete for the second site. The larger building will house the Hall of Fame, the pre1938 collection and various galleries. Key features include permanent collections, featured galleries, a café, meeting rooms, a gift shop and training areas. Completion for Campus 1—Legendary Main Street—is July 2019. Campus 2—Heritage Hill—is scheduled for completion in time for the Sturgis Rally’s 80th anniversary in 2020. There have been some great songs written about motorcycling, and some that aren’t so great. Here are 12 that should be on every motorcyclist’s playlist. 1. “Born to be Wild” by Steppenwolf. 1968. A classic riding/ looking for adventure/freedom song with a bit of a biker edge. 2. “Long Lonesome Highway” by Michael Parks. 1970. The theme song of the television show “Then Came Bronson,” this is another song about hitting the open road looking for adventure. But it has a wholesome feel compared to “Born to be Wild.” 3. “The Motorcycle Song” by Arlo Guthrie. 1968. Story teller Arlo Guthrie doesn’t want a pickle. He just wants to ride his motorsickle. It’s all about the love of riding. 4. “The Leader of the Pack” by The Shangri-Las. 1964. The leader of the biker gang always gets the chicks, but not this time. It’s a young love story with a sad ending. 5. “Little Honda” by The Hondells. 1964. Another young love story but this one oozes wholesomeness and fun on a little Honda. 6. “Bad Motor Scooter” by Montrose. 1973. This is another young love story but with a twist. The person with the “bad motor scooter” is assumed to be a young lady. Her boyfriend asks her to hop on her “bad motor scooter” and visit him at his place because he is afraid of her father. Cute. 7. “Motorcycle Mama” by Sailcat. 1972. A young man dreams of riding off with his girlfriend to seek adventure, get married and have a baby who then rides in a sidecar. Great dreams at 18 years old. 8. “Panheads Forever” by David Allan Coe. The guy loves his Panhead more than anything, or anyone. Nuff said. 9. “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” by Richard Thompson. 1991. Bad boy motorcycle rider bites the dust in this young love story. Girl gets the bike. 10. “Ride to Live, Live to Ride” by Twisted Sister. 1983. The open road calls. Life is short. Ride to live… 11. “Time for Me to Ride” by Toby Keith. Motorcyclist escapes a bad love affair, chasing freedom in more ways than one on a motorcycle. 12. “Harley-Davidson Blues” by Canned Heat. 1973. Guy buys a basket case Harley, puts it together, takes it for a ride and the bike breaks down. Bummer. Do you have a favorite motorcycle song not on this list? NCOM BIKER for NEWSBYTES AIM-2622-F-Ad Tennessee.indd 1 Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) SAVE THE DATE: NCOM CONVENTION IN MOBILE The 33rd annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-13, 2018 at the Renaissance / Riverview Plaza Hotel, located at 64 S. Water St., in Mobile, Alabama, so reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate of $114 by calling (251) 438-4000. The largest gathering of motorcycle rights activists in the world, this year’s NCOM Convention will draw hundreds of concerned motorcyclists from across America to “The Port City” to address topics of concern to all riders. All motorcyclists are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the many meetings, seminars and group discussions that focus on legislative efforts and litigation techniques to protect our riders’ rights and preserve Freedom of the Road. Agenda items will cover legal and legislative issues, with Special Meetings for Veterans Affairs, Women in Motorcycling, Clean & Sober Roundtable and World of Sport Bikes, as well as the Christian Unity Conference and Confederation of Clubs Patch Holders Meeting. NCOM has successfully outreached to numerous segments of the motorcycling community in an effort to unite for our rights, in both the courthouse and statehouse, and has become a unifying voice amongst North America’s motorcycle rights organizations (MROs), motorcycle clubs, women riders, religious riding organizations, touring groups, trikers, sportbikers, and minority motorcyclists. SECOND BIKER SET FOR TRIAL IN WACO REJECTS PLEA DEAL Following a hung jury in the first of 171 Twin Peaks cases to go to court, resulting in a declared mistrial, the second defendant set for trial on charges stemming from the deadly May 17, 2015 shooting has rejected a plea deal. Dallas trucker George “Scooter” Bergman declined a deal in court 32

to plea to a misdemeanor with one year probation, and the5:06 District 11/1/11 PM Attorney dropping murder charges, but he instead demanded his day in court by pleading not guilty to engaging in organized criminal activity resulting in deaths and injuries. Nine bikers were killed and 20 injured in the 2015 shootout involving police and bikers at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas. Describing how he was on his way to the bathroom when the first shots rang out, and how he ducked for cover until the firing stopped, Bergman says “How can I say I am guilty for something when that is what I did?” Defense attorney Clint Broden says the state has no evidence against his client “other than he was present at Twin Peaks and was wearing a motorcycle jacket.” The prosecutor’s office has since sought a continuance of the case until July, after the upcoming March 6 election primary, in a move many believe is so the D.A. doesn’t suffer a loss or another mistrial before facing local voters. Last November, Bandidos MC leader Christopher “Jake” Carrizal was the first biker to face trial. The jury in that case told the judge that even after several hours of deliberation they could not reach a unanimous verdict, which forced the judge to declare a mistrial. STUDY URGES MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS TRAINING IN DRIVER’S ED Motorcycle awareness should be included in all driver training and increased in safety campaigns, according to the authors of an Australian National University study which found that drivers are twice as likely to miss seeing a motorcycle compared with a taxi and admit they do not expect to see motorcyclists. Referred to it as “inattentional blindness” resulting in “looked-butfailed-to-see” (LBFTS) crashes, these are the most common type of collision involving motorcycles, according to the 2017 US Motorcycle Crash Causation Study. Now, a new Australian National University study, “Allocating Attention to Detect Motorcycles: The Role of Inattentional Blindness”, has found that drivers are overloaded with more sensory information than the brain can handle. “So our brain has to decide what information is most important,” the study reports.

FEBRUARY 2018

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

Researchers showed photographs of “safe” or “unsafe” situations involving a motorcycle and a taxi, and 65% did not detect the motorcycle while only 31% did not notice the taxi. In other experiments, drivers modulated their attention to accommodate motorcycles when necessary, suggesting that motorcycles are given the least amount of attention. Participants said they believed a motorcycle was just as likely to be on the road as a taxi, but admitted they would be far less likely to notice the motorcycle. However, participants who have a motorcycle license were more likely to notice the motorcycles. “Motorcycles appear to be very low on the priority list for the brain when it is filtering information,” University researcher Kristen Pammer says. Co-authors say their study highlights the need to encourage drivers to be more motorcycle-aware with special training for novice drivers to “put motorcyclists higher on the brain ‘radar’ of the driver.” Pammer notes many ways drivers can be made rider-aware, including advertising campaigns. “I would put it into driver training programs where everyone who drives must also experience what it is like to ride a motorbike,” she says, adding that “If we could have everyone pass a simulator motorbike riding test -- I bet it would make a big difference.” TRAFFIC STOP 101 REQUIRED LEARNING A legislative trend has started amongst states passing laws requiring licensees be taught the basics of being pulled over, and by knowing what to do drivers can avoid negative interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops. As of the New Year, three more states have introduced such legislation; In Kentucky, HB104 would require that a driver’s education program includes “instruction regarding a driver’s conduct during interactions with law enforcement officers” and amend the state’s Driver Manual to contain the information needed for an operator’s license examination; and require driver training schools to include it in the course of instruction for new drivers. House Bill 104 was introduced January 2nd and referred to the House Judiciary Committee. House Bill 1244 in Missouri “Requires driver’s license examiners to demonstrate to applicants what he or she is likely to experience during a traffic stop and requires driver’s education providers to include curriculum on traffic stops.” Likewise, S7239 in New York would mandate “driver education courses to include a description of law enforcement procedures during traffic stops and the actions a motorist shall take during such stop including appropriate interactions with such officers.” It was introduced January 5th in the Senate and referred to the Transportation Committee. SLUMPING BIKE SALES BLAMED ON UNCLE SAM “To say sales of new motorcycles have been slow is an understatement right up there with advising the captain of the Titanic that there’s a ‘little leak’ down in the hold,” observes the National Motorists Association (www.motorists.org), then rhetorically asking ‘Why?” in a recent blog...”Could it be ... Uncle?” Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

“It is because of Uncle that motorcycling isn’t what it was once -- freeing, in particular,” claims NMA columnist Eric Peters, adding that it has also become too expensive for Millennials -- the nextup generation that ought to be swelling the new rider ranks, but aren’t, because they’re already saddled with plenty of debt. Some telling statistics indicate the median age of a rider today is 47 -- up from 32 in 1990 -- and even more alarming is that the number of first-time/new riders in the 18-24 cohort of people who will form the backbone of the buyer base for the next 20-30 years is down from 16% of the total pool back in 1990 to a depressing 6% today. Probably because they can’t afford it, says NMA. “Motorcycling has become not-cheap for several reasons -- all traceable to Uncle.” Bikes are now mandated to have the same expense-padding equipment -- especially anti-pollution equipment like cars have had for decades, even though motorcycles overall have a negligible impact on the environment because of small engines in small numbers. “New bikes must now be very much like new cars -- computer-controlled EFI, catalytic converters...They are not only expensive as a result -- especially to service, which most people can no longer do themselves.” So instead of being an inexpensive hands-on experience, motorcycling is becoming the pastime of the old -- and affluent. The median household income of a motorcycle owner is now $62,200 according to stats compiled by the Motley Fool and 65% bring in more than $50,000. That largely rules out the 18-24 crowd (Millennials) as a class. It’s not that they “don’t like motorcycles,” as asserted by some analysts... “It’s simply that they can’t afford them anymore.” AIRBAG SUITS NOW MANDATORY IN MOTORCYCLE RACING Motorcycle suits with airbag technology have been used voluntarily by most of the world’s fastest riders for nearly a decade, though never mandatory, but that has now changed for all classes across the 2018 MotoGP World Championship races. Thanks to a new official ruling by governing body Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the high-tech devices are becoming mandatory across the board in MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 for the 2018 season. The FIM’s new mandate states that all full-time riders must wear leathers fitted with an airbag system at all times during every session. The new regulations also require that every airbag system pass a series of rigorous tests which each manufacturer is responsible for selfcertifying that its respective suit passes all regulations and standards. “These regulations mark yet another step towards increased rider safety, with the FIM, IRTA and Dorna all committed to making sure MotoGP is as safe as possible -- and always evolving,” according to MotoGP. IF you really want a Happy Valentine’s Day, then simply take your lovely woman out to eat at her fave restaurant. Somewhere that she’ll be treated like the Queen she is, and no dishes to wash. Believe me when I say you will be greatly rewarded. Oh, yeah! Here’s a few super simple, quick appetizer’s you can make before you head out......or, just make these and stay in! Be sure and buy enough champagne, wine or adult beverage of HER choice.

LAMBRUSCO COCKTAIL

SHRIMP COCKTAIL FOR TWO

1 Bag of Jumbo Frozen Shrimp from your fave grocery. Thaw under running cold water in a colander, as per pkg. suggestions. Keep tails on and pat dry w/ paper towels. Pour your favorite Cocktail Sauce into shallow bowls with stems on them or use champagne glasses. Hang your shrimp over rim of glass w/ the tail on the outside for easy gripping. Cut a lemon or lime up into sections and a slit across the center to put slit on rim of glass to squeeze all over shrimp prior to eating. I personally like a small dipping bowl of real melted butter to first dip my shrimp in melted butter and then into the cocktail sauce. Perfect appetizer for 2!

E-Z BLACK BEAN QUESADILLA

2 (15 oz.) Cans of Bush’s Seasoned (reads Seasoned Recipe on can) Black Beans; drained 1 Cup of your favorite Salsa 2 Cups Shredded Colby & Monterey Jack cheese 8 8-inch Flour Tortillas 1/3 Cup of Sour Cream 1 Small Can of Green Chilies 1 Good Pinch of Chopped Cilantro (optional) Mash one can of black beans w/ potato masher. Mix in remaining can of black beans, salsa and

Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

cilantro (optional). Spread mixture evenly on (4) tortillas; top generously with cheese. Cover w/ remaining tortillas. Heat skillet; add a few drops of peanut oil or extra virgin olive oil and cook quesadillas 2 minutes per side. You want little golden brown spots all over. Slide from pan onto a cutting board and cut like a pizza. Serve up on a platter with bowl of salsa & sour cream each. It’s only you 2; double dipping is encouraged. (Smooch)

1 Bottle of Lambrusco Wine (find @ any liquor store or grocery store selling wine) 2 Ounces Creme de Cassis (@ any liquor store) 1 Cup of Strawberries (tops and bottom tip removed and sliced) It’s one cup of strawberries for each bottle of wine, so slice accordingly. In a large pitcher (preferably glass), add the full bottle of chilled Lambrusco, Creme de Cassis and strawberries, stirring gently to combine. Fill 2 highball glasses with small ice cubes (like Sonic Drive-In has) or cracked ice. If you don’t have ice option on your fridge,(wrap larger cubes in a clean dish towel and use meat mallet or small hammer to break up into small cracked pieces) place in a small plastic bowl in freezer to be handy for refills. I would advise getting 2 or 3 bottles of Lambrusco and since you already have the other ingredients, making a fresh pitcher or pitchers is no hassle. Plan ahead guys!

CHERRY SAKE COCKTAIL

1 Bottle of Japanese Sake (or more) In each champagne glass add 2 shots of Sake 2 ozs. of Amaretto liqueur and a teaspoonful of yours’ or your lady’s frozen fruit of choice that you’ve smooshed (muddled) in a glass bowl. Using this recipe you can easily make up a pitcher. This recipe is so easy and the drink is delicious!

“Whipped” is in his back yard trying to fly a kite. He throws the kite up in the air, the wind catches it for a few seconds, it then comes crashing back down to the earth. “Whipped” tries this a few more times with no success. All the while, his wife is watching from the kitchen window and muttering to herself how men need to be told how to do everything. She opens the window and yells to her husband, “Whip, you need a piece of tail.” “Whipped” turns with a confused look on his face and says, “Make up your mind, woman! Last night you told me to go fly a kite.” -------------------------------------------------------------I was having drinks at a popular local hotel Pub with my friend Justin, when he spotted an attractive woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering his courage, he approached her and asked, “Would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” She responded by yelling at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t come over to your place tonight!” With everyone in the restaurant staring, Justin crept back to our table, puzzled and humiliated. A few minutes later, the woman walked over to us and apologized. “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you,” she said, “but I’m a graduate student in Psychology and I’m studying human reaction to embarrassing situations”. At the top of his lungs Justin responded, “What do you mean two hundred dollars an hour in your room upstairs?!!” -------------------------------------------------------------A middle-aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a neardeath experience. Seeing God, she asked, “Is my time up?” God said, “No, you have another 30 years, two months and eight days to live” Upon hearing the good news, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction and tummy tuck. She figured she might as well look her best since she was in it for the long haul. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was struck by an ambulance and killed. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 30 years? Why didn’t you pull me out of the path of that ambulance?” God replied, “Girl, I didn’t recognize you!” Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

He had been given special powers by a local witch. One day he finally ventured out of the lake to get his first glimpse of the world outside. The first thing he saw was a bear chasing a rabbit (this went on all day, every day) and so he called out to them and asked them to stop. Then he said to them: “I am a magical frog and since you are the first two animals I have ever seen, I am going to grant you both three wishes. You will each take turns using them and you have to use them now.” The bear (being greedy) went first. I would like for every bear in this forest to be female except for me.” A magical sound and it was done. Then the rabbit. “I would like a helmet.” This confused both the frog and the bear, but after a magical sound there was a helmet. It was the bear’s turn again. “I would like for every bear in the neighboring forest to be female.” A magical sound and it was done. The rabbit went again. “I would like a motorcycle.” Both the frog and the bear wondered why the rabbit didn’t just ask for a lot of money with which he could buy himself a motorcycle, but after a magical sound there was a motorcycle. The bear took his last wish. “I would like for all the bears in the world to be female except for me.” A magical sound and it was done. The rabbit then put on his helmet, started up the motorcycle, and said “I wish this bear was gay” and took off like a bat out of hell.

VIRGINIA COALITION OF MOTORCYCLISTS 2018 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By Matt Danielson The Motorcycle Law Group The website for the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM) has been updated to show the current list of bills pending before the Virginia General Assembly which would potentially affect motorcyclists if they become law. You may view those bills and follow their status at vcomonline.org. Simply click on the “Bills Of Interest” button at the bottom of the page. For your convenience I have listed those bills below, along with links to the General Assembly Website so that you can track them should you wish. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments concerning any of this legislation please do not hesitate to contact me. Matt Danielson McGrath, Danielson, Sorrell & Fuller The Motorcycle Law Group 1-800-321-8968 Motorcyclelawgroup.com Senate Bills Regulation of Attire Bill Number: SB667 Introduced by Senator Deeds Authorizes a locality to pass an ordinance to regulate, restrict, or prohibit the wearing of any combination of attire or weaponry commonly associated with military combat, paramilitary operations, or warfare that gives the impression that the wearer is an on-duty member of the United States Armed Forces, an official law-enforcement agency, or the militia during any permitted assembly of persons or movement of persons or vehicles if such attire constitutes a threat to the public safety or welfare. VCOM opposes this bill and sees First Amendment Implications. Given the wording of this bill VCOM fears that it could unintentionally negatively impact the many military veteran motorcycle clubs in Virginia, as well as groups such as the Blue Knights. VCOM respects the intentions of the bill, but we are extremely uncomfortable with the actual language of the bill. Bills in The House of Representatives Careless Driving Bill Number: HB426 Introduced by Delegate Levine Provides that a person who operates a motor vehicle in a careless or distracted manner and causes of serious bodily injury to a pedestrian or person riding a bicycle, electric wheelchair, electric bicycle, wheel chair, skateboard, skates, foot-scooter, animal, or animal-drawn vehicle is guilty of a Class VCOM believes that enhancing punishment on those who due to careless driving cause serious bodily injury or death should not be limited to only certain types of road users. We believe that the bill is too narrow, and we will work to expand the protection to all road users to include motorcyclists. Auxiliary Lighting for Motorcycles Bill Number: HB1464 Introduced by Delegate Robinson by Request of VCOM The bill provides that motorcycles and autocycles may be equipped with 44

red or amber standard bulb running lights or light-emitting diode (LED) pods or strips as auxiliary lighting. The bill requires such lights to (i) be directed at the ground, (ii) not emit a beam of light greater than 25 candlepower per bulb, (iii) not be attached to wheels, and (iv) not be blinking, flashing, oscillating, or rotating. Such lighting is not subject to approval by the Superintendent of State Police. The purpose of the bill is to allow motorcyclists to utilize LED type auxiliary lights to increases visibility of motorcycles, especially at night. Auxiliary side lighting lessens the chance of a collision caused by an automobile or truck changing lanes into a motorcycle. Several states neighboring Virginia (Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee & West Virginia) do not prohibit such lighting, or have adopted similar legislation in order to increase visibility to motorcycles. There have not been any reported problems associated with such legislation. This bill adopts language recently approved by Illinois. Virginia Code and federal regulation require side lighting for automobiles and trucks but not motorcycles. There is currently no “approved” lighting on the market which is appropriate for most motorcycles. Prohibition Against Leaving Unattended Vehicles Running Bill Number: HB605 Introduced by Delegate Carr Authorizes any locality to adopt an ordinance prohibiting any person from leaving a motor vehicle unattended while the motor vehicle is running, including a vehicle that remains stationary in the parked or neutral position. Such ordinance shall not apply to any commercial, law-enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services vehicle. VCOM opposes this bill. Many Virginia motorcyclists ride year round and use their motorcycles as their primary vehicle to go to and from work. On cold mornings many of those riders who do not have garages allow their motorcycles to warm up outside. This bill would allow localities to prohibit that practice unless the motorcyclist was standing outside with the motorcycle. VCOM believes that is an unnecessary burden. VCOM is also uncomfortable with allowing such a prohibition on one’s property. Increase in Cap on Motor Vehicle Inspection Fees Bill Number: HB582 Introduced by Delegate Bloxom Increases from $12 to $15 the maximum amount any safety inspection station can charge for an inspection of any motorcycle and increases from $16 to $25 the maximum amount any safety inspection station can charge for an inspection of any vehicle other than a tractor truck, truck that has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more, or motor vehicle that is used to transport passengers and has a seating capacity of more than 15 passengers, including the driver, motorcycle, or autocycle. VCOM recognizes that the cap on fees has been in place for some time now and that it will almost certainly be raised. The last time inspection fees for motorcycles were raised VCOM was able to get a portion of that increase to be directed to the Virginia Rider Safety Training Fund. VCOM will work to do the same thing with this increase should it pass and become law.
