IDE FAST AND TAKE CHANCES; this is what a good friend tells me every time I mount up on the bike. Everyone has their own individual riding style. Mine anymore is all about the cruise, rather than the race. Don’t get it twisted, I get that mood where I rip up and down the road on those perfect days where its just you and the open road and that felling comes over you and with ta twist of the throttle you are rolling. So, if you’re the slow and easy type good on you. Be safe out there and don’t let anyone push you out of your riding comfort zone. There has been to many good people going down from the pressure of trying to keep up with a more advanced rider. Going fast doesn’t make you cool, getting there in one piece and looking good doing it does. So to all our loyal followers Ride Safe and enjoy the summer while we have it. This month is full of events in the Mid-Atlantic area. Be sure to share your events every Tuesday on our “Tell Us Tuesday!” post through Facebook. We keep you posted with all the latest events and rides in the MidAtlantic Area. GET INVOLVED! This is your magazine too! If you want to see something, let us know! And don’t be afraid to take some pictures, and write down your stories, and send them to us. You never know, it might end up in the magazine! We are always looking for a good story, or a new road, or a helpful tip on new parts or just routine maintenance on the bike. Help you fellow Brother and Sisters out, don’t be selfish, share what you learned with everyone. For a full list of all the local events in the MidAtlantic area, be sure to check out our website www.thunderroadsmidatlantic.com. inally! A sunny weekend with no rain! Only being able to ride on the weekends has kept me off the bike quite a bit these days since it seems to want to be rainy and nasty on weekends. Well, today was not one of those days and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get out and ride. It was sunny with no chance of rain but it was close to 90 degrees. I used to ride in just my jeans and t-shirt and tennis shoes but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown more cautious. Now I make sure to wear my riding jacket and my boots along with my full face helmet…no matter how hot it may be outside! Because it was going to be so hot, I didn’t want to go on a really long ride, so I decided to ride out to Pretty Boy Reservoir out in Hampstead. I think I may have been there once a long time ago but I don’t really remember it. I had read somewhere that it was a nice ride so I got myself geared up and headed out around noon. It was a later start than what I wanted but I had some errands to attend to in the morning. I turned on my GPS and set it to “avoid highways” and I was off. I had no idea that I was in for such a nice ride. The GPS said it was almost 50 miles to get there and I thought a 100 mile day would be perfect for a day like today. The good thing is that as long as I was moving, I stayed cool for the most part. The directions that I took from Columbia were as follows: MD-32 N, right on MD-91 N for 7.8 miles, left on MD-30 N for 1.1 miles and then a right onto Dover road. Up until then it had been some nice roads to ride on. There wasn’t much traffic and most of it was farmland. I felt like I was in Pennsylvania at times. It was an enjoyable route. After I got onto Dover road, though, it was all nice back roads lined with trees and a few nice curves…a biker’s dream. Not to mention, I think I passed maybe 2 cars on my way and there was never anyone in front of me or behind me for the most part. I then made a left onto Trenton Road for 2.9

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

miles, left on MD-88 W for.6 miles, right onto Pleasant Meadow Rd for 1.2 miles, left onto MD-137 W for .8 miles, right onto Gunpowder road for 1.5 miles, left to stay on Gunpowder road for 1.3 miles, then a right on Beckleysville road for .6 miles. This brought me into Pretty Boy Reservoir. I really enjoyed going over the bridge there. I had intended to stop and explore but I never came to any parking lots or parking areas that I was comfortable with parking the bike. I eventually came to a small convenience store and stopped to get a cold drink of water. I then turned around and went back the way I came. When I got back into my neck of the wood, I scooted around on some roads that I enjoy and then called it day, clocking in at 120 miles total. I wanted to ride around a little longer but the heat was really getting to me. All in all it was a great little scoot! The only thing that put a little damper on it was when a bee or some other annoying insect got inside my right index finger under my fingerless gloves and either stung me or bit me. I don’t know which one but what I do know was that it stung and burned and hurt really bad. I couldn’t stop because I was on a narrow road at the time. There was no one around me so I clinched down on the clutch and took my hand off the throttle so I could shake the sting off. It didn’t really help but the good news is that about five minutes later, I was feeling okay. The funny thing is that when I was finally able to stop, I looked at my finger to see…nothing! There was no trace that anything had bit me or stung me…weird! You can see by the pictures that I included how nice of a ride it was. It was another solo ride but like I always say, I enjoy those better most times! My article next month will be about my trip to NC and the Tail of the Dragon. We do have a slingshot rented but don’t be surprised if I rent a bike for a couple of hours to try my hand at the Dragon…stay tuned and like always, thanks for reading!!

JACKSON: Action Jackson is what they call me. I’m an energetic, happy and friendly dog who is a complete wiggle-butt!! I love people, treats and attention! I also enjoy long walks, kongs, nylabones and toys of any kind -- especially if they squeak. I can also be a lap dog if I feel the need to sit with my family and watch TV. In a previous home I lived with kids of various ages. I am hoping that I can be back in a home very soon as long as it’s felinefree. If you want to meet me then please stop in soon! MARIO: Looking for an active, handsome, young, fun type of guy? Look no further. Hi, my name is Mario. I’m on the market for a new forever home. I enjoy a nice cuddle session and a belly rub but also enjoy going out on a nice walk/hike with my friends here at the shelter. I love people, especially if they give me attention and pizza! I’m very treat motivated, my friends here have been teaching me cool new tricks. I know sit, paw, roll over, and down and we’ve been working hard on more! I think my favorite thing in the world though has to be toys. If I’m in the room with the toy bin, I like to pick out my favorite ones and carry them around and show them off. With the warmer weather we’ve been having, we found out I LOVE to swim!! Ponds, pools - it doesn’t matter, I am all about it! I have quickly become a staff favorite, it’s hard not to fall in love with me. If you think I’d be a good match for you and your household, come to the Baltimore Humane Society and meet me today! Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

Hello! My name is Eclipse and if you ask any staff member or volunteer here at the Baltimore Humane Society about me, the first thing they will say is “I love her!” Followed by how sweet, snuggly, and lovable I am. All of those things are correct! I think my most favorite thing is to be curled up into the lap of my people. I also will give you endless kisses if you let me. I do enjoy going for a nice walk on the property here. I do, however, prefer to be the queen of my new castle meaning I don’t want to share your affection with any fur-siblings. That’s okay though, as I know I will be all you need to fill your heart with love. Again, just ask everyone here, I am a staff favorite and everyone really wants to see me in my own forever home! If you think I sound like the dog for you, please come in to meet me today! CESARO: Since being at the Baltimore Humane Society, I’ve made a lot of nice new friends. All the girls here always tell me how much they love me and how cute I am. I’ve been spoiled with a lot of love and attention, I’m one lucky pup! My name is Cesaro and I’m in the market for a new family. I’m a sweet senior boy who wants nothing more than a lap to sit in and a face to kiss. All of the staff here love me and have nothing but nice things to say about me. If you come to meet me, I bet you’ll feel the same way. FOUR REASONS TO CELEBRATE OUR INDEPENDENCE

ULY 4TH marks the birthday of the United States. Many commemorate the occasion with fireworks, cookouts, or displaying an American flag. But are there any biblical reasons Christians can find to celebrate Independence Day? Scripture offers at least four clear reasons. 1. Gratitude for Religious Freedom First, America offers significant religious freedom for Christians (and others) to freely worship. The United States continues to operate as one of the nations offering the most religious freedom worldwide. In many places across the globe, you can lose your job, be arrested, or even find yourself sentenced to death for following Christ. Yet in our nation, we can attend the church of our choice, openly read the Bible on our own or with others, and openly pray to God. This is certainly something to celebrate. 2. Appreciation for Those Who Defend Our Freedom Second, Christians can thank God for those who serve and have given their lives to defend our freedom. This includes past military veterans, current military personnel, as well as honoring their family members. We often forget our freedom of religion and other freedoms can only continue if our armed forces protect our nation and national interests. While this does not mean we have to agree with every military decision or conflict, we can be thankful for all those who serve and their families. 3. Thanksgiving for the Opportunity to Participate in Government Third, we can thank God for the opportunity to participate in the democratic process of our nation. While politics is often viewed negatively, governing leaders are ordained by God (Romans 13) and are to receive honor from those who follow Christ. Further, our nation offers the ability to participate

8

through voting, advocating for issues important to our values, and even options to run for political office. Contrast this situation with the tyrannical Emperor Nero who led the Roman Empire during the New Testament period and you’ll quickly appreciate the opportunity to have a voice within the political process. 4. Thankfulness for Peace with Family, Neighbors, and Friends Fourth, we can express appreciation for a nation at peace. If you lived in Syria today, your home and community would live under the threat of civil war. In many parts of Sudan, you would live in fear of your town being attack by rebels. If you were a Christian living in Iraq, you may be forced to flee for your safety. Despite significant violence within the United States, the nation remains free of war within its own borders. Most of us take this peace for granted, yet millions worldwide long for a single night of rest without fear of attack in their communities. We can at least take a moment to thank God for the peace He has provided for our family, our community, and nation. Jeremiah 29:7 teaches, we can seek the good of the city where we live and work to impact those around us with the love of Christ.

WATER AND WAYSIDES

I

OFTEN WONDER if weather forecasting was ever this ROAD bad. I look at many of the CAPTAIN’S weather apps and sites with REPORT their charts and graphs, and their cookie-cutter copied and pasted predictions, and it seems none of it, has anything remotely to do with reality. I have to admit, I’ve gotten spoiled when I look back at having to check the weather every few hours, since the airplane and its pilot couldn’t fly in thunderstorms. Now, I lazily rely on yesterday’s outlook, and throw caution into the wind when it comes to getting wet. Still, with all the technology and satellites,

20 Yard Dash

I wonder if Gordon Barnes and Bob Ryan, did it better with their markers and whiteboards, back in the day. So, while everyone was sitting down, eating a delicious breakfast at White’s Wayside; without a chance of rain in yesterday’s forecast, the skies opened up. For the first time, I understood the term “bucket”, as Henry raced to spare his lid hanging from his bars. We sat outside waiting for it to stop on a couple of porch swings, which for me, work better than rocking chairs. The roads were a wash. And I don’t think it was lost on any of us, that we weren’t going to let a little rain, stop us from being out on the bikes with our friends, regardless of how clean they were. Rose’s phone was paired on the Rushmore Limited’s audio system, provided by Shenandoah Harley Davidson. One of the best touring bikes ever built was demonstrating why, clearing a path on the wet pavement, and through the wet air as well. Sky Harbor’s “Illusion: Night” was playing over the speakers. The crescendo, “I fell into a dream,” seemed to coincide with the skies clearing. I reached back with my hand and gave Rose’s leg a squeeze and left it there for the next few miles. The three Limited’s all faced a challenge on our back road to Rt. 39 as we approached a group of cyclists riding abreast in the Tour de Bath. I guess it was mutually understood that each of us would risk pending death, passing over a hill or in a curve, if we didn’t tuck in behind in Formation Bogart. Peddling in single file was not 10

an option. That is, until they got a good dose of some Cookie Monster death metal courtesy of Opeth. We all got a chuckle out of Mike when he posed in a booth with a thing you talk into, but it doesn’t take pics or send texts. The roads were dry, Courtesy VA State Parks but the skies were still rather “Grace Under Pressure” -like. At Ingall’s Overlook I broke out the Pod of all Triness and set the timer for 15 seconds for fear of another face plant. I remember running the 50 yard dash in grade school in seven or eight seconds. Setting a timer for 15 for 20 is definitely a milestone and bragging rights for an AARP card. Pics taken, we all agreed on the route: Airport Road to Douthat State Park. This was one of those rides that I’d written about in another publication, and wanted to return to again. The road is one of those paved goat trails that switch back and forth descending to and ascending from Clifton Forge, VA. It will test a rider’s and pas-

senger’s metal as Joyce soon experienced. I also experienced Joyce’s smack on the shoulder at the gas station once off the bikes at the bottom of the mountain. It had been about four hours since we left White’s, so we were ready to eat. The restaurant by the lakeside at Douthat was busy this Sunday afternoon. We all opted to sit inside together instead of splitting up outside on the patio. The tables on the deck are all fixed, so we couldn’t move them together. Rose missed the ice cold beer, not served until 4:30 on Sundays. The food was good and plentiful, but we felt like the staff was a little overwhelmed with the number of diners present. Plan your trip Wednesday-Friday for a more relaxed experience. We hiked down to the lower section of falls and took some pics. We were surprised that no one was there. Usually there are kids fishing and people walking around. It was nice to have the pristine setting all to ourselves. Even though all of us were sick and tired of water, especially rain, the cascades provided a peaceful and relaxing setting. If you are the Lewis and Clark type, there is room for a bike or two for pics, when the gate is open. We said our goodbyes to Team M8 in Williamsville. Mike and Cathy had to prepare for his early flight the next day. Team Twin Cam had vectors for Burnesville, extending the ride through the George Washington National Forest to Monterey, where we turned Henry and Joyce loose. It had been a special day. What used to happen almost daily, if not weekly, now occurs every few months it seems. And Rose and I were very thankful the sacred closet was opened once more. I recently posted, “I’ve always known these machines have souls. They share the part of us that enables us to connect with everything we wish to experience. It’s one of the few things on earth, that truly reflects our ability to be free.” It’s certainly been the case with Rose and I. Once again, we have another memorable story to tell. And it would never have happened with minivans. Cheers and thanks for reading! Marc Ritchie Photos: Rose Grant

B

OLD SCHOOL

ACK IN THE DAY, before America became the dominant player in the fields of industry and technology, Britain was top dog. All the best products & latest inventions came from the British Isles, and they became known for their innovative approaches to complex engineering problems. The Brits came up with countless novel ideas in many areas of endeavor, motorcycles among them. As an example of this innovative bent, we shall examine a motorcycle engine design that took a whole new look at the problem of engine vibration.

The 1932 Square Four went from a 500 to a 600, still with overhead cam. 14

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, most motorcycles had single-cylinder side-valve (flathead) or OHV (Overhead Valve) engines. The relatively few twins were generally V- twins destined for sidecar duty. There were a few 4-cylinder bikes from Indian, Excelsior, and others, all running lengthwise, and all very high-priced for the times. While the rarified fours were fairly smooth, the singles and twins, which made up the vast majority of motorcycles in those days, vibrated badly. Vibration was a big problem, especially when trying to extract greater power at higher revs. The Brits tried many things over the years, but that wicked vibration only got worse as performance improved. One solution was the Ariel Square Four...for better or for worse.

EDWARD TURNER’S BRAINSTORM

Square Four engine was originally designed in 1928 by Edward Turner, the man who would later design the game-changing vertical twin for Triumph. In original form, the Square Four started out as a 500cc four-cylinder with a single overhead cam, and was quickly expanded to 601cc. The Square Four was essentially two 2-cylinder engines, each with traverse (acrossthe-frame) crankshafts that were geared together, rotating in opposite directions. They shared a common cylinder block and removable head. These early bikes, designated Model “4F”, used a single chain-driven overhead cam, and were produced from 1931 to 1936. Overheating problems with the rear cylinders prompted a total redesign with the model “4G” in 1936, which was now OHV and displaced 995cc. The 4G ran from 1936 to 1949, with six years of war production interrupting civilian production (1940-45). JULY 2018

SQUARE FOUR NEW & IMPROVED

This ʼ39 Square Four is a “two-pipe”, one on each side.

SQUARE FOUR DESIGN

The four-cylinder 1000 was a slow revving, torquey engine that was meant for cruising over long distances at low RPMs, or tugging a sidecar. They werenʼt high-revving, high performance machines. The two heavy crankshafts were geared together on the left (primary) side so that they counter-rotated (spun in opposite directions), thus canceling out each othersʼ vibrations. The single camshaft was buried in the crankcase, above and between the crankshafts, and driven off of the right side (timing side). It was robustly built. The overall result was a smoothness that few other bikes could match. And, in their day, they had a reputation for reliability, at a time when reliability was a major issue. The one-piece iron cylinder block had all four cylinders arranged in a square pattern (hence the name) with a one-piece removable cylinder head. It was all fed by a single SU MC2 carburetor in back, with a long intake manifold built into the cylinder head. The size and length of this intake tract was insufficient to support much power from an engine this size, forever limiting them to utilitarian levels of performance. Each bank of cylinders (left & right) shared a common exhaust manifold exiting with one pipe per side, hence the nickname ʻtwo-pipeʼ. This arrangement doesnʼt make for great airflow, but again, this wasnʼt a racer, it was a cruiser. The big problem with Ariel Square Fours was overheating. The back two cylinders never got enough cooling air, and were heated by the front cylinders.

The 1948 Ariel Square Four continued to use Arielʼs patented Anstey-link plunger rear suspension, but the girder forks were replaced with telescopic forks with hydraulic damping. The Square Four went through a major revision in 1953, with a new cylinder head and manifolds, prompting a new sub-model designation, Mark II, which ran from 1953 through Ariel’s final year, 1959. Prior to 1953, both cylinders on each side shared just one exhaust pipe, hence the nickname “2-pipes”. But new intake and exhaust manifolds and the new head gave each cylinder it’s own exhaust pipe, hence the term “4pipe” bikes. This ‘55 Square Four of course benefitted from these improvements, which yielded a bump in power to 40 horsepower, allowing a top speed of 100 mph.

This ʼ57 is a good example of a late Mark II “four-pipe” Square

JULY 2018 15

SQUARE FOUR NOT A HOT ROD Of course, the Ariel Square Four was never intended to be a road rocket. With two counter-rotating crankshafts, it was meant to be very smooth, not fast. These bikes are cruisers, designed to pull a side car or cruise at speed all day long. There weren’t many bikes in the 1950s that you could say that about. Ariel had more or less committed the Square Four to this “cruiser”-image, having plumbed in a common intake manifold that fed all four cylinders from a single carburetor, by now an automotive type SU carb. By the mid-1950s, performance was on the rise with most motorcycle manufacturers, and Ariel, now owned by industry-giant BSA, had followed the rest of the British bike industry by introducing its own vertical twins in the late-50s. The ancient design of the Square Four cobbled with compromises, simply couldnʼt compete. Square Four production ended in 1959, and in its entire 29-year-run, only 15,639 were ever built, including all models.

This may be the only Ariel Square Four bobber in captivity.

ARIEL STRUGGLES Even under the care of wealthy (at the time) BSA, Ariel just couldnʼt make it financially. Their twins were good enough, hardware-wise, but couldnʼt come close to the marketing equity of Triumph, BSA and Norton. Few twins were sold. Of course, they had their big 500 singles, the Ariel Red Hunters, which always sold well, but not enough to carry the company. Then there was the Leader. In the late-50s Ariel misread the market, believing that tiny, underpowered, partially-enclosed commuter bikes would be the future of motorcycling. They made a major investment in a whole new line of ugly little mutants called the Ariel Leader. They flopped, and so did Ariel. BSA closed Arielʼs factory down in 1962, moving all Leader production over to their own factories, to cut costs. Nothing helped. By 1965, BSA had shuttered the Ariel brand. Out of all the great bikes Ariel built over the years, the Square Four is certainly their most famous.

I’m keeping all my cows.” Third bull: I’ve only been here a year and so far you guys have only let me have 10 cows. I may not be as big as you two but I’m keeping all 10 of my cows.” Just then a shiny cattle hauler pulls up in the pasture carrying the biggest bull the 3 bulls had ever seen. At 4,700 pounds, each step this massive animal takes strains the steel ramp. (cont’d. ) 20

First Bull: “Well, I think I can spare a few cows for our new friend.” Second Bull: “I actually have too many cows to take care of properly. I can spare a few. Not looking for any trouble.” They both look over at the third bull and see him hoofing up the dirt, shaking his horns back and forth and snorting as loud as he can. First Bull: “Son, don’t be foolish --- let him have some of your cows and live to tell about it.” Third Bull: “Hell, he can have all 10 of my cows. I’m just making sure he knows I’m a damn bull.” --------------------------------------------------------------A woman goes to the Doctor worried about her husband’s temper. The woman says, “Doc, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It kinda’ scares me.” The Doc says “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water, take a big gulp and swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the Doc looking fresh and relaxed. “Doc, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my hubby started losing it I just swished and swished my mouthful of water but never swallowed and he just calmed right down. How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says, “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick.” --------------------------------------------------------------Please pray for my wife. A bee stung her on the forehead and she is in I.C.U. She almost died. Luckily, I was close enough to her and was able to hit the bee as hard as I could with a shovel at the very second that the bee stung her. --------------------------------------------------------------Leroy slides off his trunks at the beach and places his hat over his privates. A woman walks by and says “if you were a gentleman you’d life your hat.” Leroy says, “if you didn’t look like somebody hit you in the face with a shovel it would lift itself.” --------------------------------------------------------------“Grumpy” is at his girlfriend’s Baby Shower and sees all these women patting and rubbing his gal’s tummy saying “Congratulations!”. He pops another beer and grumbles to himself, “How come nobody is over here rubbing my balls and saying “Good Job!?.”

THROTTLE LIFE

4TH ANNUAL C-NOTE MEMORIAL FUNDRAISER

W

E DONATE EVERY PENNY back to the mc community, to the families of fallen riders. The highly respected Ruthless Riderz MC held their 4th Annual C-Note Memorial Fundraiser in honor of Founding member Clayton Kimbrough aka C-Note. The day started with a moving memorial at the final resting grounds in Clinton, MD along with members from chapters within and beyond the DMV. After the service the crew mounted-up for a fellowship ride onto historic Fort Washington Park for a day of celebration, remembrance and camaraderie with food, music and fun. One look at the pix will confirm the laughter and brother and sisterhood spirit that filled that air. Although the forecast called for showers and storms throughout that day that didn’t deter a park full of supporters from coming out and continuing this great legacy that not only celebrated this life of C-Note, but is also purposefully designed to raise funds for the families of fallen riders not just within their club, but within the MC community. Once again showing and proving the power of giving back and strength in unity. Much respect #RuthlessRiderz

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) NEW ‘A BIKER’S GUIDE TO MAKING LAW’ BROCHURE AVAILABLE FROM NCOM The latest in a line of “BIKER’S GUIDE” brochures was recently unveiled during the Mock Legislative Session at this year’s NCOM Convention in Mobile, Alabama. Conducted by the National Coalition Of Motorcyclists’ Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), the seminar was a hands-on demonstration of passing legislation, providing a perfect opportunity to unveil the new “A BIKER’S GUIDE TO MAKING LAW” educational brochure of similar topic. The new tri-fold brochure was produced by the NCOM-LTF to explain how to get a bill introduced and lobby for pro-motorcycle legislation, and is being provided free of charge to any Motorcycle Rights Organization (MRO), Confederation of Clubs (COC), NCOM Member Group, club or organization, through Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. “The Biker’s Guide was well received,” said Frank Ernst, Chairman of the NCOM-LTF following the mock session on May 12th. “After we passed them out, many attendees came up and asked if they could have additional copies, and most agreed it is a valuable tool and will give people help on how to get started in the process.” A BIKER’S GUIDE TO MAKING LAW joins previous titles in the educational series which includes; RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE, COMMUNICATING WITH GOVERNMENT, and NEWS MEDIA RELATIONS, and for free copies for you and your motorcycle group, call A.I.M./NCOM at (800) ON-A-BIKE (800662-2453). MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES TREND DOWNWARD Nationwide motorcycle traffic fatalities dropped by 5.6% from 2016 to 2017, a new report shows. The Governors Highway Safety Association released a report in May showcasing preliminary data on last year’s motorcycle fatalities by state. Per the report, U.S. motorcycle fatalities dropped by 296 deaths 34

-- from 5,286 in 2016 to a projected 4,990 last year. That’s coming off a 5.1% increase in such road fatalities from 2015 to 2016, the report states. The figures reported are projections based on preliminary data provided for 2017 from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Compared with 2016, motorcyclist fatalities are estimated to have decreased in 30 states, remained the same in two states, and increased in 18 states. E15 ETHANOL PROTECTION PROPOSED IN CONGRESS U.S. Representatives Austin Scott (R-GA) and Lois Frankel (DFL) have introduced the bipartisan “Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act of 2018” to require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand consumer awareness on how to safely use fuel containing more than 10% ethanol. Since motorcycle and ATV engines are prohibited from using fuel with more than 10% ethanol content, namely E15 (fuel containing 15% ethanol), improved labeling, fuel pump safeguards, and education outreach are key to protecting consumers. E15 fuel is sold at many retail gas stations, and currently 63% of consumers assume all products sold at these stations are safe for their engines despite the fact that high ethanol fuel blends can damage smaller engines and void manufacturer warranties. RETALIATORY TARIFFS WOULD ‘SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT’ HARLEY-DAVIDSON With the full support of all 28 member states, the European Union will impose “rebalancing” tariffs on U.S. imports ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to Levi’s jeans beginning in July in retaliation over President Donald Trump’s decision to put duties on European aluminum and steel. After failing to win trade concessions, on June 1 the Trump administration withdrew exemptions given to imported metals from the EU, Canada and Mexico from global tariffs imposed in March, citing “national security” interests. Harley-Davidson has warned of a “significant impact” on its sales from reprisal duties, saying in a statement; “We believe a punitive, retaliatory tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles in any of our major markets would have a significant impact on our sales,

our dealers, our suppliers and our customers in those markets.” The Milwaukee-based Motor Company claims such tariffs on raw materials would inflate its costs by an additional $15-20 million this year. Likewise, India is countering the Trump tariffs by proposing an increase on import duty on 30 American products, including “specific motorcycles imported from the U.S.”, by up to 100%. MIC, CONGRESSIONAL MOTORCYCLE CAUCUS CONFER ON AUTOMATED TECH The Motorcycle Industry Council, in coordination with the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, hosted a briefing on “Intelligent Transportation Systems and Automated Vehicle Applications Impacts on Motorcycle Safety” on May 22. Caucus co-chairs, U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Michael Burgess (R-TX) addressed the Caucus’s mission to support riders through education and awareness, the potential for technologies to improve the riding experience and bring in new riders, and why the discussion on how motorcycles will factor into a connected and autonomous world is so important. The briefing, moderated by Callie Hoyt, MIC’s manager of federal affairs, featured a panel of industry and research experts: Sam Campbell, BMW Group; Gary Higgins, American Honda Motor Company, Inc.; Shane McLaughlin, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute; and Eric Teoh, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “Visibility on the road can equate to life or death for motorcyclists, and human error is a major factor in that equation. If emerging connected and automated technologies are developed to correctly detect and respond to motorcycles, their deployment holds the potential to considerably decrease motorcyclist injury and fatality rates,” Hoyt said. Panelists discussed how connected and autonomous applications relate to motorcycles, how the applications can supplement one another, and the overall effect that widespread connected and automated technology can have on motorcycling. Both the House and Senate have been developing legislation that would establish the first federal regulatory framework for autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. The briefing recognized the importance of ensuring that the needs of everyone on the road -- particularly motorcyclists -- are addressed in AV legislative and regulatory landscapes, as well as in real-life applications. Advanced technology will also affect motorcycle rider training programs, and the panel talked about the need to train riders on how to interact with connected and automated vehicles. AUTOMATED VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY SHOWING UP ON MOTORCYCLES TOO It’s not only cars and trucks: automated tech is starting to show up wherever there are wheels, and companies are starting to focus on making motorcycles safer with automateddriving technology. Exposed to the elements and operating on two wheels instead of four, motorcyclists are particularly defenseless in the event of a crash. Yet there’s been little Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

innovation in the motorcycle safety industry until recently. Earlier this year, major auto parts supplier Bosch announced it was working on driver-assistance systems for motorcycles, like adaptive cruise control, which accelerates and decelerates to avoid potential collisions. Before that, a Canadian startup called Damon X Labs also launched with the intention of creating a similar system for motorcycles. Now, Israel-based startup Ride Vision is also working on rider safety features for motorcycles, creating an alert system that uses relatively inexpensive front- and rearview cameras to give a 360-degree view of the motorcycle’s immediate surroundings. The system uses lights attached to the motorcycle’s rearview mirrors to alert the motorcyclist when there is a chance of collision -- whether there’s a car passing or if the rider is leaning too hard. Skully Technologies, an Atlanta-based wearable tech company, is introducing a DOT certified motorcycle helmet that has augmented reality and artificial intelligence features including a heads-up display, rearview camera, Smart Phone and Bluetooth integration, with hands-free control and other smart technology. While some of the self-driving sensors and systems are the same between cars and motorcycles, it’s a notably different product says recode.net; “While the mechanics are different, the automated motorcycle industry will likely move in a similar direction as the autonomous car industry. Startups and suppliers alike will rush to partner with major motorcycle manufacturers to begin testing and then eventually producing vehicles with this technology.” NEW HAMPSHIRE BANS MOTORCYCLE-ONLY ROADSIDE CHECKPOINTS Motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints first appeared in New York in 2009; functioning like sobriety checkpoints, motorcycleonly checkpoints (MOC) allow law enforcement to pull over motorcyclists without cause, for an on-the-spot safety, license, and helmet inspection. Since then, these so-called safety checkpoints have popped up across the country and have spiked controversy as opponents claim invasion of privacy and discrimination against motorcyclists over the operators of other motor vehicles. Nineteen states now bar such roadblocks either through legislation or judicial proceedings (AK CA IL ID IA LA MD MO MI MN NC NH OR RI TX VA WA WI & WY), and in 2015 Congress banned the use of federal funds for MOCs as part of the FAST Act highway bill. Yet they continue to be a problem for bikers in some states. Although in 2011 New Hampshire became the first state to prohibit the use of federal funds to conduct discriminatory motorcycle-only stops by police, the “Live Free Or Die” state recently enacted Senate Bill 516 to prohibit motorcycle-only checkpoints outright. Signed by Governor Chris Sununu on May 30, 2018, effective immediately; “No law enforcement officer or agency shall establish or conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty.” ~Henry David Thoreau (1817-62), American Essayist, Philosopher

ON OR NEAR THE WATER DIP

1 Large Red Pepper; medium chop 1 Can of Sweet Corn; drained 1 Medium Sweet Onion; medium chop 1/2 Cup of Sliced Black Olives 1 Large Jalapeno, medium chopped (remove seeds) 1 Packet of dry Ranch Dressing Mix 2 Large Tubs of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese Just chop everything and put in in a really bright but plastic serving bowl, add the Whipped Philly, stir till well combined and serve up with Scoops or any fave chip. I always add several dashes of Sriracha hot sauce (in condiment aisle w/ other hot sauces) and I squeeze half a lime over all when done. This has the best burst of fresh flavor and a perfect dip for poolside or out on the water. So good and makes you thirsty for ice cold refreshment. *see last recipe. Oh, Yeah!

E-Zest LOBSTER TAILS

Preheat oven broiler. Lay your lobster tail flat on counter. Take a pair of kitchen serrated scissors and just cut straight down the front of tail all the way to the back of the fan-tail. Gently pull it open slightly and reach in and loosen lobster tail flesh while being sure not to pull fan-tail flesh loose. Sit the flesh right on top of where you just made the center cut and it now has the perfect position for broiling. Mix garlic powder in melted butter to taste, salt & pepper tails, then squeeze lemon or lime juice all over tails and let soak in and then brush the melted butter w/ garlic powder thoroughly over each tail. Broil no longer than 8 mins. each. Remove from broiler and brush w/ butter sauce again. Serve very hot w/ each person getting a small bowl of real butter; melted and a wedge of lemon or lime. I always do a timed 7 mins. for a medium tail as don’t like chewy at all. There’s literally 100’s of spices you can melt in your butter before brushing on and broiling. Get Creative!
