2018

– A NEW YEAR!! A New Beginning!! A Clean Slate!! It’s that time of year where we reflect on the past year and make promises to ourselves about what the upcoming year will bring! Yeah, those resolutions! You know what I’m talking about, lose weight, stop smoking, go to the gym, a better job, save money, take a trip, and on and on! Only to realize, that’s never going to happen! We suggest you make your New Year’s Resolution about your motorcycle! Yes, I know, you saw that coming, A motorcycle magazine wants you to get out and ride more, big surprise!! Well, there’s A good reason. When you ride, you meet new people. Go to an event you’ve never been before. Ride with some new people. You might learn something about the area you live, or a charity or a cause. When you ride, you’re out in the fresh air, and off your couch doing something. It’s not easy to ride a motorcycle and smoke, so there’s that too! It might not be the exercise you were looking for, but hey, the fresh air smells better than the gym anyway. Trust me on this, you want to improve your life? Be happier? Get more out of your life? Find a reason to be on the bike more, and stop making excuses on why you can’t ride. Like I mentioned last month, it has been a busy year at Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic, but you kept us going! Thank You! We want YOU to be a part of this year! Get involved! This is your magazine too! If you want to see something, let us know! And don’t be afraid to take some pictures, and write down your stories, and send them to us. You never know, it might end up in the magazine! We are always looking for a good story, or a new road, or a helpful tip on new parts or just routine maintenance on the bike. Help you fellow Brother and Sisters out, don’t be selfish, share what you learned with everyone. This year, the TRMA Road Crew will be at more events to meet our readers. Be on the lookout for us, stop us and introduce yourselves, and let us get a picture. Let’s make you famous! Or, just giving you bragging rights over you friends! For a full list of all the local events in the Mid-Atlantic area, be sure to check out our website - www.thunderroadsmidatlantic. com. We have all the information you will need to plan your season as we update our calendars weekly with new rides and rallies. As always, feel free to submit your event to be listed on the site at no charge. Just go to the web page events tab and click the submit your event tab. We will get it up on the site asap. We are re-running Manny’s article on Winterizing your Motorcycle, it was too important of an article not for people to see it again. The Road Crew here at Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic works very hard at keeping you up to date with all the local events in your area. We attend as many events as we can, more than any of our competitors, but we can’t be everywhere. Submit your photos and stories to bigcity@bigcityrhino.com and be a part of the THUNDER!! HAPPY NEW YEAR Read what Scripture tells us about God’s promises and face the new year with hope! Our Lord wants us to seek out His will for our lives and to live life FULLY alive. Stop Satan’s goal in making you feel defeated and overcome, you can start this New Year renewed! Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:40-31) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Cor 5:17) Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. (Psalm 98:1)

you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. (Ephesians4:20-25) Every year we face a New Year that we hope will be better than the years gone by. We hope and wish and cross our fingers that things get better. All the hoping, wishing and finger crossing will not get it done. To make a better year we have to become better people. I pray that we have the Will to make some changes in our lives that match our Desire for a better year ahead. “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Is. 43:18-19

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18) See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.(Isaiah 43:19) That, however, is not the way of life you learned when

FROM ACROSS THE POND THE FEATHERBED FRAME BY ANDY TALLONE Classic-British-Motorcycles.com

The 1954 Norton ES2 ‘Garden Gateʼ frame with plunger rear suspension. Itʼs what came before swing arms.

RELIEF AT LAST

The Norton Manx road racer was the first to use a Featherbed Frame.

“THIS RIGID SUSPENSION IS KILLING MY BACK” One of the most influential and important motorcycle frames ever produced for the street was the Norton Featherbed Frame. It came at a time, right after World War 2, when virtually every motorcycle on the market had a rigid frame, that is no rear suspension. Decades later, chopper builders loved them, but back in 1950 all riders could think about were their aching backsides. Most British motorcycles had converted over from girder-style front forks to telescopic forks when civilian production resumed in 1946. But nothing much had been done about the rear suspension. Harley and others mounted enormous, wellpadded saddles suspended on springs to help absorb the= shock, and it helped, but it clearly wasnʼt the long-term answer. Triumph had come up with their bizarre ʻSprung Rear Hubʼ, which was essentially a hub-within-a-hub separated by radiallypositioned springs. It provided two inches of vertical travel, but when worn or improperly lubed, they tended to get sloppy, causing sometimes wild and unpredictable handling. The most common approach was a ‘Plunger-type rear suspension, which was used by many manufacturers in slightly different forms. This was done to save money, since only slight modification to their ancient rigid frames was required, compared to adopting a swing-arm system. Norton called their plunger system the “Garden Gate” frame. (And you thought Featherbed was a funny name for a motorcycle frame.) Throughout the early postwar years (late-1940s) many things were tried.

8

Around this time, two brothers, self-taught motorcycle designers from Belfast, Rex and Cromie McCandless, were experimenting with rear swing-arm suspension setups. They designed and built several prototypes of Triumphs with the bolt-on rigid rear section removed and replaced with their own rear frame section with swing arm and two vertical shock absorbers, borrowed from a Citroen car. BSA bought several of the prototypes for study, but typical of BSA, they never did anything with it until someone else did first. So, they dithered on one of the most important design decisions that needed to be made in the motorcycle industry at the time. Norton, however, always known for its innovative approaches to problem-solving, saw the potential immediately and hired the McCandless Brothers on the spot, to work for them exclusively, starting in 1949. Norton commissioned them to design an entirely new frame for their 500cc Manx road racer. It took the Brothers just two months to come up with perhaps the single most important motorcycle frame in the history of motorcycling. There have been a few, very few, and the Featherbed Frame is surely one of them.

WHY CALL IT A ‘FEATHERBED’?

FEATHERBED GOES RACING

First off, why the crazy name? In an era when high-speed road racing was done with no rear suspension, riders would get beat up and fatigued in a long race like the Isle of Man TT. By late 1949, theyʼd mounted the Manx engine and gearbox into the new frame and were conducting testing at the Isle of Man. Their test pilot was Harold Daniell, who had himself won the Isle of Man TT three times. After several laps he came in to the pits, very impressed with the smooth ride, and declared that it was “like riding on a featherbed”. The name stuck.

The Manx 500cc OHC single was always a powerful engine, but it had been limited by its frame and running gear. The Featherbed Frame literally set it free. The road racing victories began to pour in, itʼs first being at the 1950 Manx Grand Prix, at the able hand of Norton factory rider Geoff Duke. More victories quickly followed and continued for over a decade. The Norton Manx with the Featherbed Frame was the premier road racing motorcycle of the 1950s. So good in fact that Norton decided to expand use of the Featherbed across its entire model line. It did much to spark the market for Nortons, as the Featherbed quickly gained a reputation as the best-handling bike in the world.

WHAT MAKES A FEATHERBED FRAME SO SPECIAL? At the time, most motorcycle frames were being built the same way they had since motorcycles began in the very late 1800s, which is the same way bicycle frames were built starting in the 1880s, which is the same way steam engines were built starting in the early 1800s. Heavy cast iron lugs were machined with tight-fitting bores that were heated to expand them, then slipped over the ends of the frame tubes and allowed to cool, before the tubing was bent to shape. These lugs might be an engine mount, a kickstand lug, a bracket, or even the means of joining two frame tubes together. Then, just like soldering the copper pipes on your house, they fluxed these fixtures, then melted brass welding rod into into them with a welding torch. These are called ‘brazed lugsʼ, and they worked well for decades, but are heavy, and not very strong when compared to welded frames. What the McCandless Brothers did was completely eliminate brazed lugs. Theirs was an all-welded steel frame, and one of the first, with all brackets welded on. What this did was reduce weight, make for a much stronger frame, and they looked a lot better also. The design is very interesting, and expensive to build by the standards of the day (thatʼs why most still used brazed lugs, it was cheap). It takes over 40-feet of 16-gauge Reynolds 531high-tensile manganese-molybdenum steel alloy tubing to make one Featherbed Frame. Using one unbroken length of tubing for each engine cradle tube, each runs from the top of the steering head down under the engine, them up toward the seat (tying in the swing arm bracket), then gently curving forward under the tank, to rejoin the bottom of the steering head. One long, unbroken piece of tubing per side, light, strong, simple. It was so brilliant in its simplicity that Norton was granted a patent for it in 1949. It was complicated and expensive to make, but what a frame! It was light, extremely rigid, and as it turns out, it handled better than anything else on the road or track.

This ʼ69 Dominator 650SS was the last model to use the Featherbed Frame.

THE PROTOTYPE After successful testing, Norton adopted the Featherbed for its factory racing team. But they were still building frames the old-fashioned way and didnʼt have the equipment or trained welders to build the all-welded Featherbed Frame. So, the McCandless Brothers took it on and built the 8 prototype racing frames used by Norton in the 1950 season. When Norton took up full production of the Featherbed, they still didnʼt do it all themselves. They contracted it out to Ken Sprayson who became known as ‘The Frame Manʼ. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

FEATHERBED HITS THE STREET

WHAT’S A NORLEY?

The first was the 1953 Norton International, itself a 500cc single, but with the simpler and less expensive OHV instead of the Manxʼs OHC setup. Later that same year, they dropped their new 500 twin-cylinder engine out of the Model 7 into the Featherbed Frame creating a whole new bike: the Dominator. Over the years, the “Dommie” grew in displacement and performance, always in the Featherbed Frame, ending with the 1969 Dominator 650SS. In 1962 Norton bored it out again, this time to 750cc and christened it the “Atlas”, also with Featherbed Frame. As displacement and power output rose, and always at higher RPMs, the vibration inherent in parallel twins got so bad that Norton had to start dialing back the performance of its engines. The ultimate answer was the abandonment of the tried-and-true Featherbed Frame, and the adoption of yet another radical new frame design for Norton, dubbed “Isolastic Suspension” in the new 1969 Commando. From that point on, there would be no more Nortons with Featherbed Frames.

Triumph, always the sales leader, had many loyal customers who hated losing to Nortons on the racetrack or street, all because of that great-handling Featherbed Frame. Someone came up with the bright idea of putting a Triumph engine in a Norton Featherbed Frame, and calling it a “Triton” (Tri- for Triumph, and -ton for Norton). The engine swap worked out surprisingly well and before long others were copying, building Tritons of their own. This was soon followed by a wave of engine swaps into Featherbed Frames. A BSA engine in the Norton Featherbed Frame was called a “Norbsa”, and a Vincent V-twin engine makes a Norvin. The Featherbed is as flexible as it is lightweight, and has proven to accept nearly any engine, even a Harley Sportster engine yielding a Norley. All done in the interest of lightweight and great handling.

FEATHERBED LED THE WAY However, the Featherbedʼs legacy was already etched into the annals of motorcycle history. Any Norton with a Featherbed Frame was quite literally the best-handling motorcycle available anywhere at the time. The Featherbed was also the first frame of its kind, all-welded, heavily-braced and crossbraced for stiffness, and thoughtfully triangulated around the steering head to maximize rigidity. Many frame builders, including the Rickman Brothers (who built dirt bike frames) and most manufacturers learned from, and modeled their own frames after the Featherbed. Throughout the late 1950s and all through the 1960s, Norton Dominators and Atlases were among the fastest and best-handling bikes you could buy. They had quite a reputation among the British motorcycle faithful, back then and now.

Norton frame + Vincent engine = Norvin

FEATHERBED LEGACY The Featherbed Frame introduced the world to the all-welded steel frame, signaled the abandonment of brazed lugs as a frame construction method, and demonstrated how good handling can be. It influenced every new frame that came after it and advanced the science of frame design and manufacture. It inspired other frame designer/builders like the Rickmans and others. Today many modern motorcycles still use frames that owe heavily to the Featherbed. It was indeed the worldʼs first modern motorcycle frame.

DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC

anuary – a new year. I didn’t do much riding the last couple of months of 2016. Mostly because of the spurts of snow showers we got during December. It’s kind of hard to ride when there is salt all over the roads. Not to mention, I want to get better heated gear. My past couple of articles, I wrote about not being sure I want to ride anymore. I got a little bit of feedback from not only friends, but strangers too. I listened to what everyone had to say to me with gratitude and appreciation and I mixed their thoughts with my own. Have I figured it out? Nope!! Until I do, I plan to keep riding, though. I was driving home from work one day in December and the snow was falling out of the sky and making the roads slick and annoying. I found myself wishing winter was over with already. I’m not a big fan of winter and have no doubt that I will retire to some place warm when the time comes. As I sat still on IS695 and watched the snow, I started thinking about summer and wishing it was here already…even though winter had only just started. My motorcycle was included in my day dream. I thought about how nice it would be if it were 80 degrees at that moment and I were on the bike instead of in my care. That one single thought told me that I’m not done riding (sorry Mom). I know I have more adventures to go on, more articles to write and more chics to encourage. I may end up only being a weekend rider as the week seems to keep me busy, but I think that’s okay. One of the strangers that I spoke to said that maybe I just don’t ride as much. I really liked that thought because if I’m not riding as much, that means when I do, I’ll make it count.

So my goals for this year are plentiful. First, while it’s still cold, I want to get better heated gear as I stated above. The gear I have is actually a small in men’s and it’s too big. When I wear the pants, it looks like I’m walking around with a load in my pants! I couldn’t find heated gear for women at the time but I’ve been told that it does exist. So I will shop around for that. Then as the weather gets warmer, I want to take a trip at least every other weekend to somewhere new. I was supposed to do that last year but it didn’t happen because… well, life! I also am planning to do a redo on my trip to ride the Tail of the Dragon. However, this time, instead of towing (I’ll never try to tow again!) and instead of riding all the way there, I will either drive or fly and then rent a motorcycle. Yes, I’d love to ride my own bike on the Dragon, but these days I seem to live easier instead of stressful. The really awesome thing is that this year, my bike will be paid off! That will clear up some money every month to spend on the trips. As long as I have no issues with my bike, I plan to keep it for a very long time. I love my Vulcan! I love the way it looks, the way it rides, and the way it feels. I may work on getting some louder pipes (so my Harley friends can stop asking me if I’m going to turn on my bike), but other than that, I plan to keep it as it is. Why change a perfect thing? I hope these next few months go by fast so we can get back to the warmer weather. In the meantime, I’ve included one of my favorite pictures that I took last year from my GoPro while out riding. I can’t wait to get some more awesome photos captured. Like always, thanks for reading and Happy New Year!!!

Kalashnikovs come in many different forms due to the variation in the countries that produce them. In some countries, the rifles are still produced the same today as they were the day they were modeled off their Soviet counterparts, namely the AKM. In places like China and Poland, they adapted what they learned from Type-III AK-47s and AKMs to make updated models which operated with new calibers. Poland switched to 5.56mm, in 1996, for their Beryl rifles and China went to 5.8x42mm for their QBZ rifles, in 1987.

In the United States, the rifles that we see keep the form of a regular Kalashnikov despite there being several imported variants. For example, the M70 rifles imported from Serbia, by the Zastava Military Arms group, differ heavily from Russian AKMs and are typically referred to as “Yugos”. There are several types of M70s including the O-PAP, the N-PAP, an M70 underfolder – modeled off the Serbian M70AB2 – and an M92PV pistol. Standard furniture sets, utilized on AKM-pattern rifles, do not fit on the Yugo rifles. Due to the Yugoslav Wars, stemming from the dissolution of the Yugoslavia SFR, quite a few of the wooden stock kits (buttstock, pistol grip and fore-end pieces) are emblazoned with armory markings and trench art and are highly sought after by collectors. The Black Sheep of Kalashnikovs are probably the under-folding stock variants. The stamped metal stock is both uncomfortable to shoulder and tends to slap the user’s cheekbone when the rifle is fired. There are a handful of remedies for these issues that don’t hinder the folding of the stock: such as paracord or various branded cheek-rests. Several companies also make modified replacement adapters for the under-folding mechanism within the trunnion. The rifle, which I had the pleasure of running, was a Century Arms AK-63D. The under-folders are generally kept in the KISS setup; minor upgrades such as a Troy Industries railed gas tube allow for the use of a forward mounted red-dot optic. Add a matching Hungarian sling and a magazine carrier, and you have the perfect grab-and-go rifle to drive off with. I never found there to be any quality issues with this Century Arms rifle, but always make sure to do your research on them first. As is the fashion, the rifle is chambered in 7.62x39mm and takes conventional Kalashnikov magazines. Arsenal sits top of the pile when it comes to overall quality. The top two rifles coming out of Arsenal are the SLR-107 and SLR-104 series; in both 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm, respectively. These are the two rifles that are the closest for anyone to build Russian Military AK-103 or AK-74M clones of, and it is extremely Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

popular to do so – within the Kalashnikov community. Arsenal also offers a few lines of 5.56x45mm NATO options. All the chamberings come in rifle, pistol or short-barreled rifle configurations; though the 7.62x39mm option is on a heavier milled receiver instead of a stamped. For those who want the stereotypical AK-platform rifle, they’ll want any of the SLR-107 options. All of Arsenal’s options including a left folding-stock, except for the latest SLR-107R. The standard 107F-model lacks a left-side scope rail attachment point on the receiver. All the receivers are standard 1mm thick to Bulgarian specifications. If you wish to emulate an older AKM, then the 107R is the suggested rifle due to the lack of a folding stock and that it was introduced as the lower-costing competitor to other brands – while retaining the tighter mechanical tolerances. These are, arguably, the highest quality stock Kalashnikovs on the American market. Multiple companies, such as Rifle Dynamics, utilize Arsenal rifles as their base rifle platform to modify and improve upon. This has been shared with Izhmash’s Saiga-line of rifles prior to the 2014 sanctions of Russia, due to the intervention in the Ukraine.

While there are no more truly Russian options – when it comes to imports – there are plenty of options to choose from, if you decide that a Kalashnikov is the rifle platform which you wish to utilize. Eclipse

EY FELLOW motorcycle and sidecar enthusiasts. Doug “Rain Man” Plotner here with a little story about mine and Aiden’s(“Biscuit”) adventures. First things first , here is a little history on this adventure. Back in the spring of 2017 a friend of mine decided to sell his sidecar he had setting in the garage for a few years. I told my wife I was gonna post it on the USCA forums to help him sell it and she made the mistake of asking me “Will it fit my bike?” my response was “I’ll go buy it right now”. So from May to July I worked getting the mounts made , the seat upholstered and the tub repainted. By the end of July I had it mounted and wired good enough to bring to the USCA National Rally in Corning NY. Alas that didn’t happen because my truck decided to blow a transmission seal 178 miles form home in Williamsport PA and we just towed it back home. On August 4th the USCA Facebook page shared the Iron Butt Associations Solar Eclipse 1000 ride info. Someone also sent that info directly to my page saying I know you’re not one to let grass grow under your tires , so that was pretty much a challenge at that point . Now I already have an IBA SS1000 patch and it is a World and State Record for the most people to do an SS1000 at the same time and we never left the state of VA. So I thought why not go for 2 one of a kind IBA certifications and patches. I began planning for the ride and found my rig to be in need of a rear tire a complete brakes so I almost cancelled the trip. I did however finish the alignment on the wife’s rig while I wasn’t at the National Rally. Soooo I asked her if we could take her rig instead and besides hers can go more than 80 miles between fuel stops. Aiden asked me what the ride was about so I explained to him that the Iron Butt Association had put out a special ride certificate just for the solar eclipse. We talked in detail about how long it would take and where we would go. We discussed the time between stops would be around 2 hours and we only had a small amount of time at each stop for fuel , bathroom and stretching. We planned our lunch stop and our turn around point. Our destination....The Tail of the Dragon , DealsGap NC. Now Aiden and I had been to The Dragon once already back on September 17, 2012 so this was almost 5 years since our first run and we would have done The Dragon on 2 different sidecar rigs and he’s only 8. So now on to the story of the actual ride. Monday August 21 , 2017 we planned to leave Martinsburg WV at 5:30am. That morning my alarm decided not to work and my wife had an alarm set for work that went of at 5:20am so we started out a little behind schedule. We gathered our supplies in the cooler , loaded up and headed to our start point. We fueled up and got an official start time of 6:02am 8/21/17. As we headed south on I-81 we watched the sunrise in the Shenandoah Valley of VA with the brisk morning air heavy with dew. Our first stop was right in our time frame as we arrived in Staunton VA , took a 5 minute break and fueled up. Aiden grabbed a donut and away we went south bound on I-81. Our next stop was Christiansburg VA right on schedule and feeling good we took a 10 minute stop took off the jackets and got back to the business of riding. Stop number 3 was in Abington VA totally uneventful and right back at it rolling down the highway. In Dandridge TN we stopped at a Pilot truck stop at exit 417 on I-40 (location is important here) for a lunch break and check the eclipse times for that area. As we finished fueling the eclipse was starting so was broke out the glasses and you could see the moon starting to move in position. So , time to move south to make our run and see the TOTAL eclipse.

18

Suddenly at mile marker 396ish the I ran over something in the road , unavoidable because of heavy traffic , and the rear tire blows out. We pull over to the left shoulder and start making phone calls then the local safety patrol shows up. They help us find a rollback all the while Aiden is watching the Eclipse happen and playing in the median gathering a few wild flowers to take home to Kristie. Our rollback shows up just as the total eclipse is happening so we kept our glasses handy to see this amazing wonder of planetary alignment. The darkness was a strange dark , not night but dark. All the newer cars had their automatic lights come on. The darkness was like someone tinted the lens the sunlight was coming through. Basically no matter how I describe it it’s just not something you can imagine. We loaded the bike up and down the road we went. Lucky for us the nearest shop was 10 miles away and the tow bill is $75

hookup and the first 10 miles free. We arrive at Knoxville Harley Davidson at 3:00PM and within 15 minutes they have the rig in the shop. They did however have a slight discussion about putting it on the trike lift but decided to just leave it in the floor. They did a great job and even fixed a minor problem with my rear brakes while it was there. I don›t remember the techs’ names but “Peaches” the service writer is an awesome guy and runs a tight ship. The guys finished up and I paid for the repairs at 5:42 PM and we were «off to the races» again. Since we had a 4 1/2 hour delay we had to abandon the Tail of the Dragon destination point. I had planned several destinations in case of weather or traffic delays and we chose to go to Sweetwater TN just down I75 from Knoxville to make our 500 mile point. Now for the return run , which I have affectionately named the “Lunar Exodus”. Evidently most people were to cheap to take and extra vacation day or two. Starting around 6:00pm everyone decided to head North . I understand we were in Knoxville and going through the standard evening traffic but it never let up . We came back I40E to I81N in stop and go traffic for 200 miles. Several times the traffic just stopped and we ended up shutting the bike down. While at one of our traffic stops we watched the sunset in Tennessee. The time was ticking away and I was getting tires and irritable from the delay and the horrible traffic. I you had aided me at 11:30pm if I would ever do another IBA ride my answer would have been a resounding NOOO. We pressed on for another hour and stopped in Christiansburg VA for fuel and an energizer nap. I had parked in the corner of the lot at a Liberty gas station and Aiden stretched out in the sidecar and I later on the ground on the other side of the bike away from any cars that would come in. Unfortunately someone thought something might be wrong and had 2 guys come check on us. Now before I tell the rest here’s a little description. You see the big bike and sidecar rig. I am 6 ft 220 lb wearing the standard leather vest boots and jeans . Laying on my side on the ground and I open carry my Taurus 9mm in a Kydex holster which is on the up side. So now the story. Two Sheriffs Deputys come over 2 minutes before my alarm goes off. I hear them walk up ,one on each end of the bike. Deputy says “Excuse me sir ,Is everything alright?” So I explain the day and what we are doing. They say “Well that sounds like you have a plan and are being smart about your riding” and off they go on to other things. Since my 45 minute nap was cut short I decide to grab a coffee and then try the highway again. Guess what the “Lunar Exodus” is still in full swing. We go about 20 miles and stop again on the road. Several more times up the highway we have to shut the bike off to keep it cool. When we get just north of Roanoke VA traffic finally starts to lighten up. We made good time a speed from there back north to home. As we were coming into familiar territory we got to see the sun rise again in the northern Shenandoah Valley We were nearing our starting point and I realized we were short on mileage because of the tow and the route change. I talked to Aiden and told him about the mileage and that we were already over our 24 hours because of the blowout. He said «Lets do the miles anyway” . I let him know that they probably didn’t have any provisions in the IBA rules for traffic delays and tire blowouts and he Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

was good with that. To make up our mileage we just continued north on I81 to Greencastle PA . This would be our last fuel stop before heading back to Inwood WV. By this time we are in the normal moring traffic of folks heading to work and school. The traffic around our area isn’t bad so there were no delays. We made it back to our home town of Inwood WV and put $1 worth of gas in just to get our official stop time. So our total miles on the bike , 1008 our total time was 25 hours 38 minutes. Started 6:02 am Monday morning, finished 7:40 am Tuesday morning. Had a 4 1/2 hour tires delay and some of the worst traffic I have ever seen on I81 barring and accident. Aiden asked me September 14th « When will there be another Solar Eclipse?» I answered him «The year 2024 , you will be 15 and I will be 55. We will have to go west for that one.” We will see how that turns out with a 15 year old and a sidecar. Only time will tell. Thanks for reading how one day in the life of a couple off balance sidecar guys went. Rider TIPS

F

WINTERIZING YOUR SCOOTER

EW THINGS BEAT cruising down the highway on a warm summer day. But, as winter sets in, your motorcycle isn’t exactly the most convenient way of dashing through the snow. When it’s time to put your bike in storage for the season, it’s important not to give it the cold shoulder. Maintaining your motorcycle while you’re not riding it is just as important as when you are. Nothing’s worse than dusting off your beloved road warrior to take it for a spin in the spring, only to find flat spots in your tires, fluid that’s turned into a sticky paste, and weird-smelling smoke coming from the exhaust. In order to avoid rectifying a few months’ worth of neglect, here are 7 tips on proper motorcycle storage for the winter. 1. Top off the Tank-After putting some fresh fuel in the tank, add the recommended amount of fuel stabilizer to keep the gas from deteriorating and leaving a brown layer of muck on your carburetor’s parts. Turn that baby on and let it run for a few minutes so the treated fuel can cycle through. 2. Fill up your Fluids-Double-check your bike’s brake, clutch, and coolant fluids, replacing or refilling if necessary. Remember to always use the type and amount of fluid recommended by your motorcycle’s manufacturer. You can also drain all of your motorcycle’s fluids entirely and then refill them when you’re ready to ride again. If you live in a place where temperatures frequently reach sub-zero, check your bike’s antifreeze to prevent engine freezing. Lube up the throttle, kickstand, shifter, and clutch cables to prevent moisture accumulation and rust (but be careful not to get lube on the tires). 3. Change old Oil-Over time, a running engine’s oil transitions from a clean, golden fluid to dirty, black muck. The contaminants in old oil can corrode engine parts and do some serious damage over the course of a few months. Change the oil and filter plug before storing your ride to avoid a sticky situation later on. 4. Conserve your battery’s Charge-Some newer motorcycles experience a slight battery drain (even when the ignition’s off) in order to maintain things like your clock and radio presets. You can remove the battery from your bike altogether and trickle charge it all winter. Or, if you prefer to keep things in one package, you can store your bike with a fully-charged battery. If you choose the latter, just give the battery a charge once a month while it’s not being used. 5. Tend to your Tires-If you can store your bike with the tires off the ground, that’s great. Taking the weight off your wheels is the ideal way to avoid flat spots or uneven wear. But, if you don’t have the right setup for that, you’re not out of luck. Fill your tires to the maximum recommended volume, place your ride on its center stand, and remember to rotate the front tire once a week to keep the flat spots away. 6. Wax on, rust Off-The metal on your motorcycle tends to accumulate moisture, which can cause rust if your bike is left unattended for an extended period. Washing, thoroughly drying, and then waxing your ride before putting it away for the winter will prevent corrosion and other damage. Spray your exhaust pipes with WD-40 to keep moisture and Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

rust away. For extra protection, stuff a clean towel or some crumpled up plastic bags into the intake and exhaust pipes to keep water and critters out. 7. Pick a place for your ride to Rest-Sunlight can damage leather and cause paint to fade, so if you have a window in your garage, try to park your motorcycle in a cool, dark corner. Go a step further with a fitted, breathable cover that’ll prevent dings and scratches and protect your motorcycle from dust, grime, and moisture. 8) Plug Out Pests-Mice and other rodents are notorious for hiding from the cold inside exhaust pipes and making homes out of air filters. If order to avoid any furry surprises when it’s time to ride again, plug up your pipes with an exhaust plug like the BikeMaster Rubber Muffler Plug. You can also simply stuff your air intake and the ends of your exhaust with some plastic bags - but do use bright colored bags or tie something to them so you don’t forget take them out when you fire up the bike! 9) Keep it Covered-With your motorcycle fully prepped for winter, invest in a proper motorcycle cover. A quality motorcycle cover will not only keep dust off the bike, but will keep the moisture out so it doesn’t get trapped underneath it, and create corrosion or rust. If you’re storing it outside, be sure to get a cover with tie downs to prevent it from blowing loose in wind. If you’re storing it inside you’re in much better shape, but you should still use a cover to prevent dust from building up on it. 10) Theft Protection-If you’re storing your bike outside, bear in mind that being parked unattended for months at a time makes it an easy target for theft. In addition to protecting your bike from weather, using a cover will conceal it from view, and securing it with a heavy lock and chain can give you some peace of mind. Things you’ll need: Cleaning items, including water, soap and towels for the exterior, and chain degreaser, engine cleaner, and WD-40. Fuel stabilizer, such as any manufacturer recommended brand or Sta-Bil. If you’ll be changing your oil, the items listed in the oil change article. A battery tender or trickle charger. Wax for paint finishes. A bike cover or breathable fabric sheet. If your chain needs cleaning and/or lubrication, the items listed in the chain maintenance article. If you’re willing to go the extra mile, so to speak, wood blocks or devices to lift the tires off the ground if your motorcycle isn’t equipped with a center stand. With your bike fully prepared for a few months of hibernation, you›ll find that the winter is the perfect time to get done any maintenance or upgrade projects that you›ve had on your mind. Sunset Cycles sells and installs all kinds of upgrades that will make you feel like you’re riding on a whole new motorcycle come spring time. You may not be able to ride in the snow, but nothing is stopping you from getting your hands a little greasy and actually starting one of those projects that you’ve been thinking about all season!

EPA releases final renewable fuel mandates for 2018

REPORT

Higher volumes not in best interest of motorcyclists

Bruce Brown, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame member, passes Movie maker produced classic ‘On Any Sunday’ PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Legendary filmmaker Bruce Brown, who produced the classic motorcycling movie “On Any Sunday,” died Sunday, Dec. 10. He was 80. “Bruce Brown’s influence on motorcycling in the 1970s was profound,” said American Motorcyclist Association President and CEO Rob Dingman. “’On Any Sunday’ highlighted the unique talents needed for different forms of racing and showcased the fun that people find in motorcycling.” Mr. Brown’s early acclaim resulted from his groundbreaking surfing movie, “Endless Summer,” which was released in 1966. “On Any Sunday,” released in 1971, helped spur the explosive growth of motorcycling in the 1970s. “I think many people changed their minds about motorcyclists after watching the movie,” Mr. Brown once said. “On Any Sunday” earned Mr. Brown an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary in 1971. Mr. Brown was born in San Francisco on Dec. 1, 1937. He grew up in Southern California, attending school in Long Beach before moving to Dana Point. In the late 1960s, motorcycling was sweeping across the country and Southern California was the Mecca of the sport. While visiting Japan, Mr. Brown and his wife rented a Honda scooter and enjoyed the freedom of riding. When he returned home to California, he bought a used Triumph Cub. Many of the surfers whom Brown hung out with were getting into riding as well. Several of them took up desert racing. Brown got more involved in the sport and began attending races around Southern California. Even with financial backing from legendary actor and motorcyclist Steve McQueen, Mr. Brown did not have a large budget for “On Any Sunday.” So he improvised by using 24-volt batteries in the 12-volt film cameras, producing a makeshift high-speed camera. He also used a helmet-mounted camera on some of the Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The renewable fuels mandates released this week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are higher than the 2017 levels and the 2018 levels the agency proposed in June. The EPA’s final 2018 Renewable Volume Obligations call for 19.29 billion gallons of renewable fuel—primarily corn ethanol—to be blended into the nation’s gasoline supplies. That figure is higher than the 19.24 billion gallons the agency proposed in June and slightly higher than the 19.28 billion gallons required in 2017. “It is disappointing to learn the EPA raised its proposed Renewable Volume Obligations for 2018,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations. “The decision goes against the agency’s promise to listen to consumers, who have indicated a low demand for higher ethanol blends. Forcing more ethanol into the nation’s fuel supply places motorcyclists at greater risk of misfueling their bikes.” The EPA mandates continue to rise, even as cars become more fuel efficient and drivers travel fewer miles each year. Forcing more ethanol into fewer gallons of gasoline results in higher-ethanol blends for consumers. Most gasoline sold in the United States contains 10 percent ethanol (E10), which all modern automobile engines and many motorcycle engines are built to accommodate. However, if the RFS requirements continue to be implemented, it will result in higher-ethanol blends—such as E15 (15 percent ethanol)—to become more prevalent at retail outlets. An increase in the supply of E15 can lead to inadvertent misfueling—caused by blender pumps and confusing pump labels—by motorcyclists. None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use in the United States is approved by the EPA to operate on ethanol blends higher than 10 percent. Using higherethanol blends in those vehicles is illegal and may cause engine and fuel system damage and void the manufacturer’s warranty. The AMA also is concerned the increased reliance on ethanol could further reduce the amount of E0 fuel available. Since the distribution network for E15 and E85 is limited, fuel producers may be forced to reduce E0 output to stay within the EPA’s rule. “The Renewable Fuel Standard has been broken for years, and Congress needs to reform the law to protect motorcyclists and the millions of consumers who do not want higher ethanol blends,” Allard said. American Motorcyclist Association defends motorcyclists’ Fourth Amendment rights in amicus brief to U.S. Supreme Court

SIMPLE, ALL AMERICAN ROAST BEEF

*If you’ve never cooked a Roast Beef entree, just relax as it’s the simplest thing to do and also very economical to boot. Once you do you’ll be cooking one a week. 3 Lbs. Beef Eye of Round Roast Palmful of whatever type of Salt you prefer, palmful of ground black pepper, palmful of garlic powder. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. If Roast is untied, take plain white cotton twine and tie every 3 inch intervals with twine. *There’s a fancy way to do this and you can Google but for now, let’s just K.I.S.S. it. Smear a drizzle of olive oil in the bottom of a high sided roasting pan lined w/ heavy-duty aluminum foil for easy clean-up. Mix all your spices together thoroughly and rub that Roast down with both hands covering every part of it. This is where you can get creative. If you have certain favorite flavors then add them to the Rub Mix. Or, some people like to lay down all their vegetables on the bottom of pan (or foil) carrots, onions, sliced potatoes, etc. Some people like to use spices combined with a pre-made packet of Pot Roast Seasoning you buy at any bigger store in spice aisle. Place on a rack and let stand for at least 15 minutes while you wait for oven to ding. Roast in oven for 60 minutes (20 mins. per pound). Remove from oven, cover loosely w/ foil and let rest for 15-20 minutes before cutting. Remove twine. Always cut against the grain (the other direction the meat lines are running) so just slice across the meat like you would a loaf of bread and you’ll be fine. If you laid down veggies in bottom of pan, remove to separate platter and cover w/ foil also while yoiu shake juices from foil into a small skillet to use pan juices; add a bottle of Aus’ Juice to pan drippings. Always serve Roast Beef Aus’ Juice and Whipped Horseradish Sauce together. Just take as much bottled Horseradish Sauce as you need and add a cup of Creamy Whip Cream (in a can) and whisk all together until combined but

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

NCOM BIKER for NEWSBYTES AIM-2622-F-Ad Tennessee.indd 1 Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) DATE SET FOR RETRIAL OF TWIN PEAKS CASE After a mistrial was declared in the first Twin Peaks case to go to trial in over two years, a spring 2018 trial date has been set for the first defendant to go back on trial in the deadly shootout. The retrial date for Christopher “Jake” Carrizal, 36, will be April 2, the court coordinator for Waco’s 54th District Court determined. A mistrial was declared in the case after the jury couldn’t come to any agreement on the three gang-related charges on which Carrizal was indicted in connection with the 2015 shootout involving police and bikers at Waco’s Twin Peaks restaurant. “At the end of the day they couldn’t, there wasn’t enough evidence that the Dallas Chapter (of the Bandidos MC), and specifically Jake Carrizal, had committed any violence against any person that wasn’t self-defense,” defense attorney Casie Gotro said in response to the ruling. When leaving the McLennan County Courthouse after the hung jury resulted in mistrial, Carrizal said he knew his battle was only beginning. “We’ll fight it another day,” he said.

traffic crashes result from human error, so a research program that 11/1/11 5:06 PM focuses on human behavior is critical. We look forward to working closely with GHSA and NHTSA in finding new ways to reduce crashes related to behavioral issues.” For each BTSCRP research project, TRB will assemble a panel of subject matter experts to provide guidance throughout its full lifecycle, from problem statement development through final product delivery. GHSA Research Committee Chair Thomas Glass states, “This is exciting for GHSA members and anyone working in the highway safety field. The panels can include members from law enforcement, prosecution, treatment and many other professional fields that do not work directly for an SHSO. We are benefiting not only by the collaboration of TRB, but also by the widening circle of experts that we will become active participants in highway safety research.” Information on GHSA’s current research projects can be found at www.ghsa.org/resources/BTSCRP

• Baby boomer buyers, the most consistent motorcycle consumers, are aging out of the industry fast. • The industry has failed to increase sales by making new riders out of women, minorities and millennials. • The old dealership model is outmoded and unimaginative. • The arrival of autonomous vehicles may push motorcycles off the road entirely. “The message is, ‘We are in trouble, and there is no silver bullet’,” Pandya said. The consortium called on the power sports industry collectively and riders individually to self-correct, self-police and work together to improve motorcycling’s image and prospects. In summary, the panel’s report identifies five major areas that participants felt the motorcycle industry should focus on over the next three years: 1. Improving the desirability of motorcycles 2. Ensuring motorcycles are not forgotten amid the autonomous car boom 3. Increasing female ridership 4. The importance of self promotion 5. Improving the dealership experience “There has never been a more compelling and interesting time in motorcycling,” the report states, with consensus centering on attracting new riders in a shrinking market. NEW STUDY FORCASTS STRONG GLOBAL ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE GROWTH A recent study by Infiniti Research Ltd predicts that the electric motorcycle market will grow 42% in the next five years. Reported on military-technologies.net, the detailed analysis includes all major global markets, and identifies marketing strategies and market trends through 2021. “One trend in the market is development of long-mile range motorcycles,” said one analyst on the study team. “Hence, OEMs are continuously working toward the development of battery technology so the mile-range bridge between these motorcycles and ICE (internal combustion) counterparts is reduced.” The report concludes that the most prominent driver in the market is decreasing battery prices, which allows OEMs to push cost benefit toward customers. The market is facing continuous improvement in battery technology, which has the strongest effect on both profitability and adoption rate. The report also states that high purchase prices remain the most challenging prospect for high-performance electric motorcycles. Although while the initial cost of electric motorcycles is higher than equivalent internal combustion powered bikes, the total cost of ownership is less than that of IC-powered bikes due to the latter’s higher fuel and maintenance costs. FULL MOON LINKED TO MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES A Canadian research study published in the British Medical Journal recently found that “distracted drivers, like those who text beThunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

hind the wheel, are a danger to themselves and to others. Even a brief, momentary glance away from the road can result in lifethreatening consequences.” Motorcycle riders can testify to that, but the research identifies one fatal attraction for motorists that shows up 12 times a year – the full moon. “The researchers found that on nights illuminated by a full moon, fatal motorcycle accidents increased by 5% compared to nights without a full moon,” the report concludes. “On evenings when the supermoon decorated the sky, this increased to 32%. The study included 40 years worth of data from the United States, as well as records from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. After analyzing data from the official United States registry of motor vehicle crashes from 1975 to 2014, during which time 494 full moons and 65 supermoons appeared, researchers calculated the number of fatal crashes on full moon nights compared to nights with a quarter moon (one week before and after the full moon). They found 4,994 fatal crashes occurred on the nights with a full moon, which is equal to 9.10 crashes per night. In contrast, a total of 8.64 fatal crashes per night occurred on nights without a full moon. Fatalities increased further under a supermoon, amounting to a total of 703 fatal crashes, or 10.82 fatal crashes per night. This means that for every two full moon nights, there was one additional fatal crash. Under the supermoon, this increased to two additional deaths. Authors of the study believe there are at least three potential explanations for the link between motorcycle deaths and full moons, including lighting effects produced by the moon that may cause riders to misjudge their speed, or that a full moon means more riders -- or other traffic -- might take to the roads. “A different possibility is this idea of distraction -- that glancing up at a full moon takes the rider’s gaze off the road and creates a moment of inattention that can lead to a loss of control,” according to the report. OKLAHOMA TO ENFORCE “MOVE RIGHT” LAW On November 1, the Oklahoma State Law went into effect penalizing motorists driving in the left lane, especially if they are identified by police as impeding traffic. According to a report given by Tiger Mike Revere, Liaison to the Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs at a recent NCOM Board Meeting in Oklahoma City; “Law Enforcement WILL issue tickets, especially since it’s probably going to constitute a Revenue Generation Tool to help with the State’s budgetary shortfall (fines are estimated at $285), and given that we don’t have an Anti-Profiling law on the books, you can probably expect police to pull over any bikers on a Pack Ride if they’re staying in the left lane, and especially if they’re not passing slower traffic.” Isolated reports of this happening have been circulating already, said Revere, advising riders in the Sooner State to be careful and observant! Two blondes are sitting on the beach over in the Bahama’s for New Year holiday and one says, “You know I had a really bad scare just the other day”, and the other blonde looks with her big green eyes and says, “What?, what happened to you?” and the other blonde looks back at her with the big violet eyes and answers, “Well, I swallowed an ice-cube whole and I haven’t pooped it out yet. I don’t know if I should go to E.R. or not”. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lil’ Johnny is always being teased by the other neighborhood boys for being stupid. Their favorite joke is to offer Lil’ Johnny his choice between a nickel and a dime. Lil’ Johnny always takes the nickel. One day, after Johnny takes the nickel, his friend, Buda takes him aside and says, “Johnny, those boys are always making fun of you. Don’t you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel, even though the nickel is bigger? “. Lil’ Johnny grins really big and slanted and beams up at Buda and says, “Well, if I took the dime, they’d stop playing the game, and so far I’ve made $25. bucks off them idiots.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Quick question. If you answer this one question correctly that means you will be very wise throughout the entire New Year: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ENZYME AND A HORMONE? (NOW, look away and come up with the answer). The answer is: You can’t hear an enzyme. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------My New Year’s resolution is to help all my friends gain 20 pounds so I look skinnier when I go out clubbing with them. My New Year’s resolution is to read more, so I already turned the subtitles On for my new 70” t.v. Let’s be real. A New Year’s resolution that you actually begin after the New Year is really just something that goes in one year and out the other. I’m really excited. I’m looking towards the future with enthusiasm. That’s why I’ve made the choice to start my New Year’s resolutions in 2019. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A bear walks up to a sidewalk cafe counter and says to the owner, “I want a grilled....................... cheese.” The owner says, “What’s up with the pause?” The bear says, “Hello, wtf? I’m a BEAR!” Why don’t blind people skydive? It scares the dang crap out of their dogs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

4 THINGS TO HELP YOUR FAMILY IF YOU’RE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT

W

By Matt Danielson The Motorcycle Law Group

hen a serious car or motorcycle accident occurs, it is often a family member or significant other who is contacting an attorney on behalf of the injured party. While I hope neither you nor your family are ever in this situation, all motorists should share vital information with a trusted emergency contact to help ensure they’re adequately prepared in the event of an accident. Below is a list of information to keep up to date and share with your family member or significant other. 1. Medical Insurance: Provide your emergency contact with the name of your insurance company and your policy number. Often, it’s easiest to give them a photocopy of your health insurance card.
 2. Medical Information: Do you have any known allergies? Are there items in your medical history that would be important for an emergency medical team to know, such as current medications or a history of heart disease? Make sure your emergency contact is kept up to date on your medical conditions.
 3. Personal Injury Attorney: What is the name and telephone number of a trusted personal injury attorney that your emergency contact can call – even for some guidance prior to formal representation? The sooner your attorney can be called the better. 4. Power of Attorney: If you are seriously injured and unable to make decisions for a period of time, a power of attorney designation allows a loved one to carry out tasks that you would normally do, such as paying bills or cashing checks. It also allows a loved one to make medical decisions for you. Power of attorney is important even for those who are legally married. Once completed, it needs to be signed in the presence of a notary public. Visit our website (MotorcycleLawGroup.com) and select “Prepared Rider Kit” to download a free power of attorney template. 44

The majority of riders go each year without an accident, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared in case you’re ever involved in one. Having this information readily available can be critical, especially immediately after the accident occurs. As always, if you have any further questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist, please do not hesitate to contact me.
