ETSY SPOTLIGHT |DESIGN AND QUALITY

Watch This By Robin Tolkan-Doyle

I design custom, personalized wrist watches with love and passion. These watches are from Narmi, Geneva in Switzerland and I combine them with high quality genuine leather bracelets. I use pure biological tanned cattle hide, which is cut, dyed and polished by hand. A leather strap gets that certain something when it is hallmarked. This traditional method of leather processing is an ancient craft which I enjoy bringing back with a modern and simple design. Many of the leather pieces are stamped with flowers and tendrils. The designs are also embellished with ruffles, semi-precious stones and other decorative elements. My watches and bracelets are interchangeable. Various colors and closures can create a personalized piece. Each bracelet is also made to fit the size specified by the customer, which I hope gives pleasure to the wearer for a long time.

LET TER FROM — THE EDITOR

When I was younger, time was a hard concept to grasp. Hours, days, weeks seemed so much longer than they really were. Especially when I was looking forward to a special date like my birthday or the last day of school. Now, that I’m a busy adult, mom, wife and plate spinner, I can’t have enough time. I joke about making the day 27 hours with an eight day week (four given to the weekend) to accomplish everything I want. But I know that even if that was possible, I’d still find things I didn’t have time to do. What I realized instead (and I don’t think I’m alone in this), is that I need to take pause and appreciate the time I’m living now…celebrate the moments…all of them whether they’re big or small; watching my son smile as he plays basketball, enjoying the conversations I have with my mom on the phone snuggling with my dogs at night, even though I’m mad at them because they ate my mouth guard or peed in the house…again. This renewed appreciation to stop and smell the roses is my new year’s resolution. It’s my fresh start. When I interviewed our cover girl Tia Mowry recently, we both seemed to bond over this idea. As a mom to three-year-old Cree, she too, feels that need to slow down and appreciate what she’s created. Coincidentally, I’d interviewed Tia and Tamera (her twin sister) almost 20 years ago on the set of Sister, Sister and it was a trip to reunite with her all these years later. I hope you enjoy what she, and all our fabulous interviewees have to say in this issue. Happy New Year! Warmly, Robin

WINTER 2015 //

F E AT U R E

F E AT U R E Tokyo-based singer and songwriter YURI was born and raised in Kobe, Japan. YURI attended an international school in Kobe, enabling her to become fluent in both English and Japanese. Being a very musical child, YURI started out playing the flute in her school band during her junior and high school years until one day, her childhood dream of becoming a concert flutist got deterred when a fellow high school friend asked her to sing at the high school talent show. She then started singing professionally at the age of 16 with a local Jazz quartet in her hometown of Kobe. She got accepted and attended the Berklee College of Music on a scholarship. During her tenure at Berklee, she was chosen to perform the American National Anthem at Foxborough stadium, home to the New England Patriots. She was also one of the 10 chosen performers with the renowned Overjoyed Gospel Choir and toured and performed at the Blue Note Japan exclusively for 2 months. After graduating from Berklee, YURI has performed and worked with the likes of Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Toshinobu Kubota, AI, LL Cool J, Carly Simon, gospel singer Andre Crouch, Hank Shocklee (producer and member of Public Enemy), among many others. Her voice was hand picked by international movie director, Ridley Scott, to record a scene in his 2007 film American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. In 2012, YURI released her first solo album “LoveRespectHarmony” from Japanese major recording label, Crown Records. In 2013, following the success of her first major release, her next single, “Kibou (HOPE)” was picked up by a major cable network WOWOW, as the theme song for their TV drama series, “Magma.” Most recently this year, she starred in and wrote the theme song for the remake of a studio Zhibli movie, Majyo No Takkyubin (English title: Kiki’s Delivery Service). YURI plays Kara Takami, a witch singer who lost her singing voice through tragedies in her life, but gets it back in the end through the help of an unexpected friend, a teenage witch, Kiki...making her debut as an actress. She has also appeared in Asahi Beer Commercials and occasionally makes appearances on other TV shows. At the end of October, YURI released her double single, “Be There/Breathe” exclusively through iTunes. Japanese R&B superstar, Toshinobu Kubota calls YURI, “The best female singer in Asia.” YURI’s voice continues to be featured in both Asia and internationally, and she continues to write, record and perform with her band on both continents. Thrifty Hunter had a pleasure to recently chat with this Japanese singing sensation. Here’s what she had to say: What's the most important thing to you about breaking into the industry? To be ready when that moment or chance comes along, and finding the right partners that believe in your vision. When pursuing your dream, we can go through different things. How have you managed to handle your musical journey while dealing with other obligations? Life happens, "stuff" that comes with life happens almost on a daily basis, whether it is joyous, or not so joyous occasions. I can say that for myself, I've worked a 9-5 job, waitressed, worked in retail, sang in wedding bands, you name it, I probably have done it! I can say now that all those experiences that sometimes had nothing to do with singing or music made me who I am today and to this day, still contributes to my writing and performances. On a really personal tip, I went through a very painful divorce some years ago that almost had me completely throw in the towel and crawl into a hole somewhere. But I decided that that would be defying who I am and disappointing everyone who had supported me to do what I had set out to do. So I channeled all of that bitterness, anger, and feelings of betrayal into my music, my songs and performances. And in return, I felt like my burdens and that heaviness I carried in my heart got a little lighter. It’s really cliché, but music has and continues to be my therapy. What could be some challenges as an international artist? Cultural differences and language barriers can put a limit on your career as an international artist. But I believe that if you stay true to who you are and if your art reflects that, it can transcend even those difficult barriers! I perform a lot of English covers as well as originals at my shows, and people (who don’t speak any English) have come up to me and told me they felt the song! It’s happened to me, where I’ll listen to someone singing in another language that I don’t understand, and though I don’t speak it at all, I start feeling all emotional and end up all in my feelings! Who are some Japanese are that inspire you? Actors Ken Watanabe, Hiroyuki Sanada, and singer Toshinobu Kubota are some of my favorite artists who have made significant marks in Japan and overseas as well. I think that they’re very global with their art and mindset. What advice do you have for aspiring singers/musicians? To believe in yourself first and foremost, continue to work on your craft, and to stay humble no matter what!

A Glimpse into the Real World of Kenya, East Africa Through the Eyes of A Budding Fashion Photographer By Ami Gujral

F E AT U R E

F E AT U R E

What first drew you to photography, how did you discover it? As a storyteller and poet, I always found myself unable to express through words and thus resorted to creating images that tell the same story. I shoot to show what I couldn’t tell and to give a voice to my otherwise mute inner self. I wish I knew it could someday be a career path since starting out. I took photos just for the love of it without the hope of ever really advancing it. How do you go about making your work memorable, what sets you apart from the rest? My whole workflow process goes a long way in ensuring my work is authentic and memorable. Right from the moment a prospective client calls in or mails, through to negotiations up to the point of delivery. A lot of research work goes in on the client brief and this ensures I deliver only the best sometimes surpassing even the clients expectations and this helps earn me to gain referrals to other prospective clients.

What Kenya is known for: Tourism. Beaches. Wildlife. Poverty. Disease. Acts of terrorism and corruption. Present day: There’s a new generation of ambitious, highly driven Kenyans breaking down these stereotypes, flocking to the capital, Nairobi, and helping bring their city onto the world stage to give the vibrant Kenyan capital the cosmopolitan status it deserves. The fashion photographer Bravotieno is one of them. I was privileged enough to have my own parents born and bred in Kenya and hold fond memories of my times there as a child. We would spend our Christmas holidays waking up early driving from Nairobi to Nakuru National Park spending long days on safari then making our way to the coastal city of Mombasa to my relatives’ beachfront properties. I saw a side of Kenya that most Kenyans themselves would only dream of. I am forever grateful for having such an idealistic time there, but even as a child something never felt quite right. Why was I the one with the power and the privilege to appreciate the beauty? Why can you drive from a 5 star safari lodge to a white sandy beach hotel, that were playgrounds for the affluent few, and pass poverty stricken shantytowns along the way? Was this the future of Kenya as I knew it? Surely not. Kibera is the largest urban slum, not only in Kenya but the whole of Africa, home to around 200,000 people. The majority sees the slum as an area of extreme poverty, rampant disease and little to no employment. The facts and figures may be true but just like you and I, growing up and making our way through life, we instinctively dream of more. We dream of a life beyond our own hometown or in this case the slum. The sheer scale and population size of Kenya’s slums would suggest that pools of talent and ambition must exist within them. Kids growing up in the slum would make it their lifelong goal to eventually leave the slum life behind and achieve their dreams. You can even argue that the sheer idea and passion to escape a harsh reality would propel these ambitions and talents higher than those living and growing up within a safe and comfortable environment. I believe it is these dreamers who hold the key to Kenya’s fruitful future. The times of colonial and inherited wealth are dwindling fast. There’s a new able and aspiring generation in town that are growing, having their voices heard and are here to stay. Brayotieno is no exception to this, as a budding fashion photographer having grown up in the slums, photography in the world of fashion seemed a farfetched dream. Brayotieno is now breaking down any barriers to succeed fully in this. Thrifty Hunter featured his work in our fall issue and we were excited to have him interview with us. This is what he had to say:

Your recent photos in Thrifty Hunters 2014 fall issue were awe-inspiring. What message do you want our readers to take away from your work? I want my images to tell stories of their own without the need for expansive captions. I want my audience to understand my subjects, particularly Africa and African fashion and lifestyle through works that portray reality as compared to those which are widely found on the Internet. Images that always send messages of hopelessness and desperation. I want to tell our stories through African eyes. Growing up in modern day Nairobi, what challenges have you faced as a photographer and how would you describe the fashion industry in Kenya in the present? The first challenge as a creative individual in Africa generally is the sad fact that the arts have not really gained full appreciation so sometimes breaking out tends to be a major problem as many parents and guardians still view the arts as a lost cause. Personally, my slum background proved to be quite a challenge as the current situations made the simple thought of ever acquiring personal equipment seemed a farfetched dream but am glad that that never deterred me from achieving my full potential and I’d also like to thank all who saw me through up to this point and still continue supporting my cause. What are your dreams and aspirations going forward, where do you see the Kenyan fashion industry going? Going forward, I want to put my art and self in a position where I can shoot exclusively for local and international publications like yours and who knows eventually, Vogue, GQ, Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar. I also want to be in a position to fully give back to the community that gave me a reason to dream and made me who I am today. On the industry side, I’m very much be glad to say that it’s on a steady rise as the present and emerging talents are all doing their best to keep the art alive so the future is very much alive. Finally, what has been your most memorable moment as a photographer? Every day for Brayotieno is to me a best moment. Every time I look at previous and present work there is always that visible growth accompanied by a satisfactory smile that reminds me am soon reaching the top. Also, being able to be appreciated world over for my work makes me happier coupled with fashion publication interviews and features that go a long way in making the world know about me has always pushed me to do and be better.

What does photography mean to you? Photography to me is that which gives me a life. It gives me a reason to wake early and tuck in late at night. Photography to me is simply that which gave me a second chance at life and made me find my true self F E AT U R E

COVER STORY

Rising to fame in the '90s as a television fixture on the hit show Sister, Sister with her twin, Tamera, Tia Mowry practically grew up in front of television audiences. With two NAACP Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series and three Kids Choice Awards for Favorite Television Actress, this pop culture icon has starred in and produced project after project including the highly-rated CW show The Game, and Nickelodeon's Instant Mom, in which she plays Stephanie, a former party girl turned step-mom to her older husband's three children. Tia is now married in real life to actor Cory Hardrict and is a busy mom to her toddler son, Cree. Her latest baby is her upcoming joint project with Tamera, "Twintuition," a series of novels geared toward tween girls which debuts in April 2015. Thrifty Hunter had the pleasure of chatting with Tia recently and got the low down on her new book, her parenting philosophy and her love for growing vegetables. Congrats on penning your second book! Is “Twintuition” similar to your first book, “Oh Baby! Pregnancy Tales from One Hot Mama to Another?” Thank you! I’m really excited about it because it’s actually something different that Tamera and I have done together. “Twintuition” is a bunch of fictional stories. We got to be creative and use our imagination, but also take our personal experiences as twins and apply them. It was a really cool experience writing it. How has being a mom in real life helped you with your role on Instant Mom? I’m always applying what I’m going through in my personal experiences, to my character. What I like about the character that I play is that she is the type of mom who hasn’t completely let herself go. She tries to balance her own career and still be the best wife that she could possibly be also be the best mom that she can be to her three bonus children. That’s how I am in real life. I’m not the type of mom who’s let herself and her needs go. I think we’re in a new generation where moms don’t just have to stay at home and I’m not knocking stay-at-home moms. But, I saw my mom not focus on her career after she had kids. She was all about her kids and once she got older and we were raised, she didn’t really know what to do with her self. Now, she’s trying to reinvent herself and I learned from that. I don’t want to completely lose myself with being a mom. I think moms can still be sexy. I think moms can still have ambition. I think moms can still be the best moms they can possibly be without giving up on themselves too. How has being a mom changed your life? I think number one, I’ve learned to stop and smell the roses. Just enjoy the simple things in life. I think the first time I realized that was when my son was six or eight months old and we were visiting the beach. When he first heard the waves crashing, the expression on his face was just priceless. I had completely forgotten how beautiful and amazing and serene that moment is because I’ve gone to the beach many times. Both you and Tamera are now moms. Do you share parenting advice? We do share some parenting advice, but we’re very different with our parenting skills. I’m more of the modern day mom, so I’m into co-sleeping and allowing my son to tell me when he’s ready in regards to getting off the bottle, getting off the pacifier, sleeping in his own bed. My sister is extremely traditional. Her son was in his crib since he was a newborn whereas mine, you know, he just got out of our bed. And he still comes in our bed sometimes.

COVER STORY

If your son ever showed any interest in a career in entertainment once he got a little older, is that something you would encourage? I’m not pushing it. But, at the same time, he’s so comfortable in front of the cameras because of being around Cory and I. Our joke around the house is, “You’re going to be a bigger actor than your parents!” I want him to make sure that he stays in school and he gets a college education and then I’m like, “Okay, Cree you can do whatever you want.” Share something about yourself that many people don’t know. I recently created a garden in my house and I’m really excited about it. One of the main reasons why I wanted to do my garden is because I’m into healthy eating and organic foods. It can get extremely pricey especially when you’re cooking with fresh herbs. You buy these herbs and then you don’t use them all and then go bad after two to three days. That’s very Thrifty Hunter of you! You know, we’re all about living within our means here… It’s true. Eating healthy can just be so expensive So, I thought, I’m just going do it myself in my backyard. I have parsley, sage, oregano, mint, rosemary, tomatoes, strawberries, lemons and basil. It’s so cool because I can just go in my backyard and get whatever I need to cook with. Oh, and I have lettuce! I made like my first salad a few weeks ago. It was amazing!

Ingrid Jensen

Hair Stylist and Personal Image Designer

Bringing out the best in you for 2015 INTERVIEW BY KRISTINA GOLDBERG

Styling hair since 2008, Ingrid Jensen is the Education Director at The Canyon Salon in Westlake Village, CA. As one of the regions top stylists, instructors and mentors, Jensen pioneered education and mentoring programs at Canyon Salon. The training programs there focus on cutting, styling and high-level, five-star customer service. With in-depth training from Bumble and Bumble, Wella, Toni & Guy and TIGI as well as a mentorship with the celebrity stylist Allen Edwards, Jensen takes her awe-inspiring skill, brilliant creativity and vivid passion and translates that synergy into flawless looks for all her clients. Her image consulting is refreshing and custom tailored to the desires of her clients. Jensen gives to surrounding communities and celebrates her passion of image re-invention. She works with a team of experts in image consulting and personal re-invention. Her YouTube channel has recently been launched to provide a vehicle to share her expertise and unparalleled talent. We sat down with Jensen to learn about her passions the re-invention process she takes her clients through: Why is it important for someone to refresh his or her style every so often? It is important for people to refresh their style every so often because we are continuously changing as human beings. It keeps us from getting complacent in our lives. No matter how successful you are, it is important to have that flow of tweaking your style. It doesn’t mean you have to follow trends. As we grow, we should constantly try to improve who we are with our goals. You can improve your image as well as personal growth. We are manifesting ourselves as our goals change. It does not mean where you are at is bad, it is a continuous metamorphous of life, a natural process. I love to help people with their outward change because it helps your self-esteem to see yourself in a different way. With change comes confidence; it is the excitement that keeps life from getting complacent and boring. That boredom could transcend into negativity or depression. Everyone can jumpstart change with changing your image…t is all interconnected. When you have a little excitement, how does that make you feel starting your day? It starts the day with a little fizz. I like the bubbles! By trying a new lip-gloss, t-shirt, different hair color, outfit or even a new eyeliner. Change is great! What do you see happen to people as you create the transformation? When I am designing someone’s image, the first question I ask them when I first meet them is; “What do you love about your image and what have you always wanted to achieve?” This is a long conversation. I try to get it done in 15 minutes, but that discovery continues through the whole process to get to the root of what they really want from the inside out. Once I gain their trust, we work together on a plan. As we work together I see a positive energy shift. They even walk differently. This is what fuels my passion to continue being an image designer. My favorite part of the process is discovering a person’s highest vision of themselves--what that looks like to them. There are different facets of this, but when we discover the pieces, it all comes together.

WINTER 2015 // BEAUTY

BEAUTY

Why do you think creating a new hairstyle for someone can transform or wake up a person’s inner confidence and self esteem? Hair and makeup are the first initial impression when you meet someone. I like to design hair to fit their personality. Maybe to bring out their eyes with a side fringe. When someone is happy with their hairstyle or color, and I teach them how to care for their style at home, This gives confidence that permeates through their day. How important is teaching someone how to care for their hair and what products to use after a hair transformation? That is a great question; I absolutely would never send someone out of the salon with something they won’t know how to obtain by themselves. That happens frequently--we are professional blow dryers, but our client may not even own a blow dryer. I try to find out as much as possible about my client before I give them a style, how much time they are willing to spend on their hair: Are they a wash-and-go person? Do they curl their hair? Maybe they know how to curl their hair better than I do because they have been doing it all their lives. I tailor it to how much time they are willing to spend. I teach them the top three products they will need and if they can only leave with one then I get the most important one. We have a loyalty program and lessons and workshops available to help them get what they need. Tell us about your new YouTube channel and blog and what you hope to achieve. These media outlets are going to be used to share how my peers are building their business, how they are giving back to their communities and connecting with their clients. The other side is to connect with the clients and people walking the streets to help transform their lives and teach them how to take care of their hair. I am going to share tips and tricks to help them. I will share with my colleagues the knowledge of how I built my career and how we are all on the same team and we are here to help each other by sharing successes and challenges. What do you suggest to most women at home who cannot afford a salon makeover or are looking for more cost efficient products? Purchasing a professional product at the salon is more cost efficient than buying a less expensive brand at the drug store. Professional products are 4-5 times stronger, and more concentrated. The drug store brands are full of fillers and not the active ingredients. Also, you don’t need to be shampooing every day or using a whole handful of shampoo. If you buy an Alterna or Kevin Murphy brand, you can activate a pea size amount with water. For professional hair styling at the salon, we have different levels of stylists for every budget. We have rising stars, master stylists and educators. There is something for everyone at the Canyon Salon. Our consultations are free and we meet and figure out the best plan for them financially for us to help them achieve their dream image. Ingrid Jensen has built a multi-faceted career in beauty education, transformation, mentoring and philanthropy. She is a vital part of the world of styling. She never stops learning; it’s her passion in life.

Nourish Your Body A PLAN for A Healthier Lifestyle By Jennifer Leff MS, CPT

Are you eating just to eat or are you eating to nourish your body? If you are unsure, you are not alone. Many of us are overwhelmed and operating on autopilot when it comes to eating. There are many factors that come into this equation such as conflicting information as to what are healthy ways to eat; demanding schedules with no time to recharge, and a constant state of stress that is being fueled daily by our fast-paced culture. Are you ready to nourish and love your body? If so, you can start today by empowering yourself to choose a lifestyle that is nourishing. Let’s make 2015 the year you start nourishing and loving your body and not just feeding it. To better understand what is nourishing and how we incorporate this way of life into our busy schedules, we consulted with Pamela Kingsley, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Certified Lifestyle Educator and the creator of www.nourished.life. Kingsley explains that not only do the foods we eat affect our health, but so do our thoughts and lifestyle. You can eat perfectly, but if your mind is filled with toxic thoughts of self-criticism, fear and worries, you are creating an unhealthy stress response. The connection between the body and mind are inseparable. Stress produces cortisol and cortisol stores fat and creates hormone imbalances that cause a damaging domino effect throughout the body. Kingsley also recommends that people make peace with their food choices and enjoy meals with gratitude. If personal food choices are unhealthy, Kingsley suggests limiting the quantity and frequency of unhealthy foods. When working with clients, Kingsley assists them in developing a customized PLAN that will set them up for success. She shared with us a few of her techniques that have helped many of her clients. Below is a four part P-L-A-N to start the year off right. PRIORITIZE your time with clearly defined goals. If your goal is to be healthier, prioritize your time by putting your health first. For example, schedule in the weekly activities you enjoy, move your body daily, strive for 7-8 hours a night of sleep, stay well hydrated by drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily and plan your meals. Kingsley recommends that when planning your meals batch cooking is an excellent time and money saver. This is a method of preparing and cooking large amounts of foods and storing them in portions for a later use. These foods can be stored in mason jars in the refrigerator or frozen in freezer safe containers. For example, a week’s worth of chopped vegetables can be stored in a mason jar in the refrigerator to stay fresh. Also, left overs can be stored in mason jars 92

WINTER 2015 //

FOOD

as well and not spoil as quickly as with other containers. Batch cooking will help keep you accountable, on track and hopefully prepare you for when life does not go as expected. Tips for freezing batch cooking are: • Completely cool foods before freezing to prevent freezer burn. • Foods should not be left out for more than two hours to prevent contamination. • Label each container with the contents, portion size, and the date it was frozen. • Foods should not be stored for more than six months to maximize taste and nutrition. LOVE yourselves and those around you. Much like a computer programmed for specific functions, we are programed to love. When in opposition mode, we feel bad both emotionally and physically. We benefit to choose to love because it creates peace within ourselves and NOURISHES every cell in our body and mind. For example, the act of cooking with love and creating a delicious meal to share with others can be nourishing on multiple levels. ACCEPT what you cannot change. Spending time and energy frustrated and stressed over people, places and circumstances we cannot control is a formula for living a reactive life instead of a proactive life. You can take charge of your life and create the outcome you want by giving yourself permission to take time to reflect before you respond to stressful situations. Taking time to reflect allows you to honor your feelings. NUTURE yourself and celebrate positive behavior changes no matter how small. Every time you prioritize your health by making nourishing choices, you are moving one step closer to your goal. It’s easier to nurture and love others if you first start by treating yourself as your own best friend. Another way to give your nervous system a rest and unwind from the chronic state of stress is a daily digital detox of one hour of not looking at your phone or other electronics. There is always something that seems urgent but in reality, it can wait. Our goal for you this winter is to live a more nourishing life by following the steps outlined above and enjoy your family. Meals with loved ones are where we can best connect and nourish one another. The meal does not have to be perfect or homemade and can take place anywhere. Examples of nourishing foods that you can have in your meal are in-season vegetables with different colors and textures and broth soups made with fresh herbs. Also, fruits and protein in their natural form provide well-balanced meals.

FOOD Below are two nourishing and delicious recipes from www.nourished.life. The Pesto or Thai Noodles are made with spaghetti squash as a replacement to regular noodles. Spaghetti squash and basil can be found year round in your local markets and provides a wide range of vitamins and minerals to help protect the body from harmful toxins. The Vampire Salad is a more nutrient dense version of a traditional Caesar Salad. The replacement of romaine for kale gives you a denser dish including two top detox foods, garlic and kale. Also, a healthier version to regular croutons is snap pea crisps.

PESTO OR THAI NOODLES Ingredients • 2 lb. spaghetti squash (this is a fantastic alternative to noodles and can be used in other pasta recipes or substitute ½ regular noodles and half spaghetti squash. • 1 cup fresh basil leaves (packed) • 1/2 cup baby spinach • 3 Tbsp. chopped rosemary • 1 Tbsp. fresh oregano • Juice and zest of half a lemon • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1/2 black pepper • 2 Tbsp. - 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 Tbsp. nutritional yeast (optional) or add ¾ c of your favorite cheese OPTIONAL: Make this a Thai dish by eliminating rosemary/lemon/ oregano/yeast, using coconut oil, ½ c cilantro, ¼ tsp. green Thai paste and 1 Tbsp. miso paste. Mix in ¼ c hot water and add with other ingredients to cooked squash. Directions •Preheat the oven to 400 F. Cut squash in ½ and remove seeds. Artisan Platter

Directions: For platter: Assemble as desired. Add as much or little to your platter.

Hard salami Beef Prosciutto 4 Meatballs Mortadella ½ cup Olives ¼ cup Capers Gouda Blue Cheese Soft cream Feta Cheese Bread of your liking 2 Hard boil eggs

Hard boil eggs directions: 1. Place the eggs in a single layer at the bottom of a saucepan. Cover with at least an inch or two of cold water. The more eggs that are in the pan, the more water you should have over the eggs. Pot should be on high heat and bring the water to a full rolling boil. Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water may help keep egg whites from running out if an egg does crack while cooking. 2. Turn off the heat; keep the pan on the hot burner, cover, and let sit for 10-12 minutes. Depending on how cooked you like your hard boiled eggs, the eggs should be done perfectly in 10-12 minutes. 3. Strain out the water from the pan and run cold water over the eggs to cool them quickly and stop them from cooking further or, if you are cooking a large batch of eggs, remove them with a slotted spoon to a large bowl of ice water. The best way to store hard boiled eggs is in a covered container in the refrigerator. Eggs can release odors in the fridge which is why they should be kept covered.

Time: 20 min

Eggs last 4 days in fridge.

A TVUERLE TFRE A

Zuri Hall isn’t your typical girl-next-door. From winning her first Emmy one year after her college graduation to guest hosting E!’s Fashion Police and Vh1′s Big Morning Buzz LIVE, Hall is well on her way to becoming a new media maven. Currently, she’s the newest TV personality on the block of international pop culture powerhouse, MTV! All this in addition to her digital content creation (of her YouTube channel/lifestyle brand “Hey Zuri Hall!” and a web series currently in pre-production. Here’s what she has to say all about all this fabulousness! Tell us about your road to success? How did you follow and then achieve your dreams? It's been a long and winding road. Lots of set backs and lots of milestones. I'm stronger for it, and wouldn't have it any other way. I've wanted a career in entertainment since I was a child. So from the time I was six years old, I took singing lessons, writing courses, acting and Improv classes. I was active in community and school theater, even through college. I read a lot of books on the industry. Growing up in Toledo, the library was really my key to the outside world; my way to learn about the industry I was preparing myself for. I took every chance I received to travel or intern. And the connections I built as a teenager and college student helped open doors for me down the road. What risks did you take in order to accomplish those dreams? I've been taking risks since elementary school to reach my goals! When I was a few months away from graduating from Ohio State, I saw an ad announcing a competition to become “The Face” of a local TV station in Indianapolis. That very same evening, I called off work for the next day I drove the almost four hours to the audition in a city I'd never even visited before. Hundreds tried out and my audition was only 5-10 minutes. Then I hit the road back to Columbus. People thought I was crazy, taking a shot in the dark like that with what they assumed was a waste of time, energy and money (I was a broke college kid!). But I got a call back... and after a few more rounds of elimination-style competition (and driving back & forth from Ohio to Indianapolis) I won the one-year contract -- and my first job as a TV host! Any advice to those who want to follow their dreams but are scared to make a change?

Tell us about what’s on the horizon for Zuri Hall? I'm loving the direction my career is taking as a TV host/personality at MTV! I'm working on two pilots with them now; one for MTV, and another for MTV2. So hopefully those will turn into really cool projects that viewers can see soon. And I'm always popping up on the channel hosting various specials; Million Dollar Maze Runner, MTV's Style in the City movie marathon, a Gift-A-Thon where we surprised young adults making differences in their communities with $1,000 gift cards. And soon you can check me out hosting MTV's reality game show The Challenge Aftershow! Continuing your success, what are your goals for the future? I have a life & style channel on YouTube called "Hey Zuri Hall! So, I'm focused on growing that brand. It's all about my “guide to getting it right in beauty, style and life”... kind of. Haha! The whole idea is that I'm still figuring "it" all out, too. So I'm inviting everyone along for that ride! I'd like to collaborate with other content creators, and continue using the platform as a way to connect with my supporters and fans. It's so much fun! Soon, I'd like to transition back into one of my first loves, acting. From the stage to the big screen. I'm open to it all, and can't wait to get back into scripted programming! Finally, and most importantly in my opinion, I'm excited to give back. So many people helped me on my journey, so I know how vital it is. I look forward to encouraging inner-city youth, and mentoring other young women with big dreams and strong ambition. Lots in store for the near future! I stay super active on social media so people can keep up with me and talk to me also (I read everything and respond to as much as I can!) I'm @ZuriHall on Instagram & Twitter. Same name on Facebook. I try to keep it simple. :-)

Life begins at the end of our comfort zones... I’ve never not been a little scared out of my mind before making one of many leaps of faith. But that’s the beauty in facing fear head-on. One of my mottos is “Big risks equal big rewards;” that’s not an excuse to be reckless. But, I’m all about calculated risks. I’ve been so blessed to see them pay off. This former Miss Florida has a laundry list of television host credits including Comedy Central’s Short Attention Span Theater, The Daily Show, Backyard Habitat for Animal Planet, and iVillage Live for NBC. But her true love for “invading” homes and whipping them into shape formed when Pesce hosted A & E’s Clean this House. In 2011, she launched her successful organizing company Molly Pesce Organizes, which takes her to high-end homes around the globe (from Montana to Singapore). When she’s not reorganizing closets and creating filing systems for photographs, Pese lives in organizational bliss in NYC with her husband and children.

DeClutterYour Space in 2015 with Molly Pesce

How did you transition from being a television host to launching an organizing business? It was one of those happy accidents. I had been hosting a show for A & E called Clean This House and when the show ended, I realized I wasn’t ready to stop organizing. A dear friend told me to start writing a blog about my love of organizing. Before I knew it, people were asking me to help them get organized… and the rest is history. How would you best describe your clients? I have a very New York centric clientele. They include a number of celebrity and high-end clients, but mostly I work with families. They are either people who are super disorganized and need HELP desperately or they are my “take it up a notch clients” who want to get their lives much more organized so they can live a higher quality of life. I really believe that more organization doesn’t have to mean more structure. It can just create opportunities for more time to enjoy your life. What’s the job you’re most proud of accomplishing? I have helped a few people with real hoarding issues. Today people use the term hoarding flippantly but when you are around someone with a serious problem, it truly breaks your heart. In my experience their living space has been cut down to small alleyways through mounds of stuff. It is agonizing for them to let go of even the most mundane items like old newspapers and even plastic bags. You have to go gently with them and convince them that there is a way to live a normal life. When you see a space that was once filled with overwhelming junk now looking like a normal home, it is incredibly gratifying.

What's been the craziest thing a client has asked you to organize? A doghouse! Seriously, I got special bins for the leashes, collars, and puppy treats. What are some tips you'd offer someone who wants to start off 2015 clutter free? If you have a project like a closet you want to organize, the key is to set aside some time and then take everything out of the closet. Everything! That way you cannot stop before the job is done. There is a moment in every organizing project when you feel overwhelmed and you want to stop. If you haven’t committed to the project fully (i.e. completely empting the closet), you might stop in the middle and not finish. If everything is out of the closet you have to complete the job. Any new year’s resolutions for keeping your own home organized? My mantra for this year is to take a breath and slow down… just a little. I am sure you won’t be surprised to hear that I am very organized in my personal life. Everything in my home has a place and we are on a good schedule. However, I always feel a bit frantic keeping up with everything. I run a business and have three kids. I would like to slow down just enough to have the time put my coffee cup in the dishwasher, put my bills and receipts away and pick up my house before it reaches critical mass.

Ishmael from Willia m Pilgrim & THe all grown ups B y S he r i s s e’ D. Wo o d l e y

Kansas city native Ishamel was born as an orphan. Despite his troubled childhood and moving from foster home to foster home, his determination and passion for music led him to Los Angeles where he lived on the streets and taught himself to play multiple instruments. Ishamel knew at a very young age that he wanted to pursue a career in music. At the age of five, his passion sparked when he saw Michael Jackson on television and instantly falling in love with music: “I would go to my bedroom and sing to myself and pretend I was Michael,” says Ishmael. “He was magic to me.” We recently sat down with Ishmael to learn how he overcame his tough childhood, and how he went from living on the street to living his dream playing music. When did you first notice your passion for music?

What type of instruments do you play?

I discovered my passion around the age of 5. I remember seeing Michael Jackson on the television and instantly falling in love with music. I would go to my bedroom and sing to myself and pretend I was Michael. He was magic to me.

I play the guitar, drums, piano, bass, and harmonica.

How did y’all come up with the name William Pilgrim & The All Grown Ups? Phil decided on the name by reading the book “Slaughter House 5” (William Pilgrim), and from the movie Swingers with Vince Vaughn (the all grown ups)

You both now work with LA Youth Network. How did you find this organization and what about it encourages y’all to be apart of it? From being homeless &and not having resources. We give guitar lesson and song lessons every other week. What is some advice you can give to a young individual wanting to follow your dreams?

Y’all collaborated with a six-time Grammy winning gospel group, the Blind Boys of Alabama.” How did it feel to be a part of a group that not only won one Grammy Award, but six?

Pick up trade. A dream is not enough it must be backed up by a skill. You must have a trade.

It’s a complete honor. I felt like I was making history.

What kept you optimistic when life got tough? Knowing if I put my head down and get through it will pass. Sometimes

Tell me a little about your new album Epic Endings?

life can’t be explained and you have to go through it.

It’s a mixture of 60’s soul, modern rock, and Americana. I’m trying to say something meaningful through this music. We try to live up to that message through the organizations we support. I think if we all just do a little to help the ones around us, this world would be a much better place. The main idea was based on social commentary on the negative momentum of today. How did you keep positive and optimistic during the time where you went from foster home to foster home and living on the streets? What kept me going on the streets was the fact that I still had a goal to reach for. After living on the streets for about a year or so, I built up a resilience and a kind of stamina for the street life. I think you block a lot of stuff out and toughen up.

Fashion stylist and expert, George Brescia, presents his new book titled “Change Your Clothes, Change Your Life.” Brescia created this style guide to use as a tool for men and women to shop and dress in a way that exudes confidence and sophistication. Ever since he was a child, Brescia wanted to write this book. He has been surrounded by fashion his entire life. Growing up, his mother owned a women’s clothing store and made sure that her family’s sense of style was a top priority. Then, while in high school and college, he held jobs in the fashion retail industry. Working in the corporate side of retail, he found his niche: “I wanted to help women feel fulfilled and empowered by their clothing,” says Brescia. “I want to help people do two things; discover what their best attributes are and embrace and celebrate them. [Then] to ask themselves everyday what it is they want their appearance to say to the world.” Brescia suggests that you use your closet as a toolbox every morning. Take the time to “think it through.” Learn about the colors and textures that flatter and highlight your eyes, skin and hair color. These pairings are what can send you out the door with confidence. Not just for adults, this book can also be helpful to everyone at any age. “It’s so important to get teens in high school and college, flexing their ‘fashion muscles’ early so they can attract the kind of people, places and things they want in their lives.” Many of Brescia’s clients are men who are looking to improve their appearance. So there is a whole chapter dedicated to guys who want expert shopping tips for the work place and clothing for date night. Everyone knows nothing is better than a man who knows how to dress. Now don’t think that Brescia doesn’t apply this to himself; he makes sure that his style is perceived in the right ways as well. “I want them to see that I love life, I love new adventures and I love meeting people and helping them to discover their best selves through something as simple and beautiful as their clothing.” Brescia’s style guide is a must-have, if not for yourself, then for your fashion forward (or backward) friend. Knowing what to wear for any occasion can take the stress out of your daily routine, and save you time and money when going shopping.

The Change Up, Magic Mike, and Hart of Dixie star Mircea Monroe was born in St. Louis, Missouri. As a child, Monroe’s father work for the United Nations where her family was stationed in the Solomon Islands and Fiji. Before making her way out to Los Angeles, the beautiful Monroe moved back to the United States (Michigan and Virginia) after spending her childhood in the South Pacific. Her name “Mircea,” a male first name in Romanian, was chosen by her father as an homage to his favorite professor, Mircea Eliade, at the University of Chicago, where he studied History of the Religions under him. Thrifty Hunter recently caught up with the busy actress and chatted about many things including yoga, charity work and…dating advice columns. At what point in your life did you know you wanted to purse a career in acting? I love acting. I love it in every part of my being. It’s scary and exhilarating and fun and it’s everything. It teaches me about myself every single day. I’m not sure when I knew I wanted to act, I just know that right now, it’s exactly right. What can your fans expect to see you in? Episodes is out Jan 11th on Showtime, Hart of Dixie starts Monday December 15th and I’m now on a new show called Imposter that’s hilarious. We start shooting in February. Yay! I love the show Hart of Dixie. How did you like playing recurring star Tansy Truitt, and how can you relate to her? I love Tansy with my whole heart. Leila Gerstein created the show and allowed me to have some of the most fun I’ve ever had. Leila’s amazing and I owe Tansy to her. I relate because she’s spunky and sensitive. You once had a dating column called “Dating Advice from a Hot Girl.” Tell me about it and how did you come up with the column? Ha. Yeah, that was really fun. I absolutely loved it. Oh man, am I the one that named it that? Yikes. I don’t think so. Anyway, I was so happy to be able to share and help people in a funny, but informative way. I’ve actually done a ton of dating advice type stuff and I absolutely love it. LEFT IMAGE Dress Nami onnami.com/ Jewelry : D'Mimi by Ali Levine http://www.storenvy.com/stores/577527-alilevine-design

You’re also a certified yoga instructor and scuba driver. Wow did you develop these hobbies, and which one do you like best? Yoga is and will always be precious to me. It’s healing and fun and a great work out. It clears my mind and helps ground me and makes me my best self. Scuba diving, I initially learned to do for an acting job. I love the water and anything near it. However, I recently went cave diving in Mexico and I was so scared I don’t think I’ll be scubaing for a while! Are you part of any charities or organizations? If so what are they and how did you get involved with them? I’m very involved with Covenant House California. They help homeless youth and truly transform lives. It’s moving and inspiring work. I’ve always been drawn to helping kids in foster care and kids without homes. I know that if we provide them with love and resources, it will brighten our whole world. What would you say is your life mantra? I am. What advice would you give the readers on following their dreams? It is your duty to be and give your full self.

California native Camille Guaty is one of the beauties in the new hit series Scorpion. Born to a Puerto Rican mother and Cuban father, Guaty had her fair share of moving around: “I think I reached six different schools by the time I was 15.” Being the new girl, though, helped Guaty become the talented actor she is today. When did you know you wanted to pursue a career in acting? I’ve always known, for as long as I can remember. I would gather the neighborhood friends and make up plays and stories and perform them for our imaginary audience. Tell me about Scorpion and the character you play? Inspired by a true story, Scorpion follows Walter O’Brein, an eccentric genius and his team of nerdy prodigies who operate as a think tank. I play Megan O'Brein, Walter’s sister. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at a very young age and is living on borrowed time. She has agreed to partake in a case study for this new drug. With great promise comes great risk. You will see throughout the remainder of the season how I help my brother be more human and how he helps me. Megan may or may not be dying...I can't say. But what I can tell you is that she isn't going anywhere anytime soon. How is the cast on set of Scorpion? We have so much fun together! Work hard, play hard and we do. Ari and I spent 12 hours together on our first day It solidified such a great bond between the two of us and I think it shows on screen. We may cry when the cameras are rolling, but when they yell cut we crack jokes left and right. You’re in Jennifer Anniston new movie Cake. Tell me about it, and what was it like working with her? I can’t even begin to say how thrilled I am to be apart of such a tremendous film. It’s about a depressed woman suffering from chronic pain and emotional trauma, who gets herself hooked on a cocktail of pills and alcohol to mask her pain. After seeing visions of a member of her support group who committed suicide, Jennifer Aniston seeks out the dead woman's husband. I play her caretaker’s (Adriana Barraza) daughter. I become very uncomfortable with the way Jennifer treats my mother and all I want is to have her be home with us and our family, who need her. My fathers an alcoholic, I work hard and need help taking care of my three-year-old son. Unfortunately, my story line was with my mother and my family, so I never got to work with her, but I her she is fantastic and I’m routing for her to win the award season. What are some of your upcoming projects? I just finished shooting, The Wedding Invitation, a movie with all female leads and an all female crew! Quite impressive. It was the writer’s intention, Rainy Kerwin, to help support women in film and she did it! I’m also developing my first TV Show. It was in 2006 when Selma Hayek produced Ugly Betty. She became my new inspiration and from that moment on, I always knew I would be working on both sides of the camera. What have been your favorite projects you’ve done in the past? I was on a show called The Nine. It was the first time I fell in love with my character and the story I got to tell. It was a dream job…too bad it only lasted 13 episodes. That’s Hollywood for you. Prison Break was another story I got really excited about. Who wouldn’t want to be one of the only females in an all male cast…lol! Are you part of any charities or organizations? If so what are they and how did you get involved in them? Chrysalis was one of the first organizations I got involved with when I moved to Los Angeles. It’s a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment. When you see the transformation of individuals who were once living on the streets, who now have a job, an apartment and are reunited with there family, you realize how Chrysalis saves lives. What would you say your life mantra is? Be the person you want to be around! What advice would you give to an individual wanting to follow their dreams? If you have a dream, go and grab it…reach for the stars for one day, you might just become one!!

PIN-UPS FOR VET’S GORGEOUS GINA ELISE By Robin Tolkan-Doyle

Inspired by her late Grandpa Lou, who served four years in the army during World War II, Gina Elise created an amazing non-profit organization called Pin-Ups For Vets. Through the sales of Pin-Up calendars, Elise raises funds to improve Veterans’ healthcare, and donates funds to VA hospitals for medical equipment and program expansion. Since 2006, when Pin-Ups for Vets was formed, Elise and her dedicated team of volunteers have been improving the quality of life for ill Veterans across the United States through personal bedsides where they visit to deliver gifts and show appreciation. Elise and her girls also promote volunteerism at Veterans Hospitals, conduct moraleboosting events for military spouses, and boost morale for deployed troops through delivery of care packages. Thrifty Hunter was recently honored to chat with this successful humanitarian. What inspired you to create Pin Ups for Vets? In 2006, I began hearing stories about severely wounded service members coming back home from their deployments in Iraq. Many of the healthcare programs for wounded service members were overcrowded or underfunded, and sometimes the hospitals found it difficult to provide the best care for the Vets. There were also a large number of aging Veterans from past wars that were entering the hospitals to add to the patient load. I wanted to do something to honor my Grandfather’s military service in the Army during WWII, and I had always loved the beautiful nose art on the WWII military planes that depicted beautiful women. In the 40s, nose art was used to boost the morale of the aircrews and reminded them of what they were fighting for back home. I took the love of the art form and my love of the 40’s decade to produce the first pin-up fundraiser calendar in 2006 that we began to sell in 2007, with the hope of raising funding to purchase new therapy equipment for the VA hospitals. Equipment always gets worn out and we thought this was the best way to spend our funds---to buy brand new, state-of-the art rehabilitation equipment for our Veterans. We have been in existence since 2006 and have produced nine popular Pin-Ups For Vets calendars. Now we are on a 50-State VA and Military hospital tour! We have visited over 6,000 ill and injured Vets at their bedsides in 48 facilities nationwide in 27 states and in also in Germany. We have also visited our troops at 23 military bases across the U.S. How much have you raised over the years selling your calendars? We have donated $52,000 dollars worth of new equipment for VA Hospitals across the United States.

Where are some of the places you’ve traveled with this career? We have been all over the United States visiting VA Hospitals, Military Hospitals and State Veterans Homes. We have also visited Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. In January of 2011, we partnered with a fellow nonprofit called “Cooking With the Troops,” and put on a big event called “Operation Fight Post Holiday Blues” for the service members being treated at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Chef Ellen Adams (who is an Air Force Veteran herself ) helped us prepare an incredible meal for our Warriors receiving medical care at the hospital. That hospital serves as the nearest treatment center for wounded soldiers coming from Iraq and Afghanistan. We felt that it was really important to be there for our service members at that point in their recovery. What’s been your most memorable veteran hospital visit? While visiting a VA Hospital’s spinal cord unit, I stopped by the bedside of a Vet to chat and to deliver a calendar gift of appreciation. I spoke to him and he answered my questions quietly and very slowly. After visiting for a while, I left the room to go to the next patient’s room. A nurse who had been at the nurse’s station across the hall came up to me to tell me that the Vet had just spoken his first words in a month, since he had suffered a TBI. I was so emotional to learn that the Veteran finally spoke again. You can never underestimate the power of human-to-human contact. Many of our Veterans lay in bed for weeks on end without any visitors, as their families may be far away. Some of them don’t even have family left. We get many comments like “Am I dreaming?” or “This is the best thing that’s happened to me all day!” or “When are you coming back?” The best comment I can hear is “You’ve taken my pain away.” I love hearing that one because it means that for a few minutes, we were able to take their minds off of their current situation to experience some lightness and happiness. This is all essential to the healing process. Where do you get all your fabulous retro pin up outfits? There are many retro-inspired clothing lines that I adore. A few of them are: Voodoo Vixen, Stop Staring, Tatyana, and Unique Vintage. This year, PIN UP BOOtique (stores in Ontario and Montebello, CA) was so kind to provide the outfits for the 2015 calendar. What’s your goal for Pin Ups for Vets? It has been our goal to visit our Veterans in at least one VA hospital in every state in the US! We’ve visited our Vets in 27 States so far, so we’ve made if over half way! We would just love to be able to continue to do what we do by putting out our fundraising calendars and making life better for our Veterans, who have given so much!

Trista Sutter; From Bachelorette to Book Author By Sherisse’ D. Woodley

Born in Indianapolis and raised in St. Louis, Trista Sutter’s life took an unexpected turn when she received a call from the ABC show The Bachelor. “I went for fun, oddly fell in love, got my heart broken and then got an opportunity that changed my life; I was asked to be the first Bachelorette where I ended up meeting the man of my dreams.” Sutter and her husband, Ryan, now reside in the beautiful state of Colorado with their two children Max and Blacksley, and their five-lb. Yorkie, Tank. Sutter is also the author of the newly released book “Happily Ever After: The Life-Changing Power of a Grateful Heart.” Thrifty Hunter recently had a chance to chat with Trista about everything from where she drew her inspiration for her new book to her experience on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. When did you know you wanted to be a writer? I’ve dreamt about writing children’s books since I was young, but until I was connected to my literary agent, I didn’t envision that ever becoming a reality. I guess you could say that I wanted to be a writer when I was given the opportunity to become one. Have you ever experience writer’s block? If so how did you overcome it or how did you prevent it from happening. Definitely, but I don’t know that it was true writer’s block. I had difficulties finding certain stories that my editor and I thought would round out each chapter, and I struggled with words and flow and confidence at times, but with a deadline looming, I just kept typing away and asking for help when I needed it from my editor, agent, and even my husband. I love his writing style! Where do you draw your inspiration from? My family, first and foremost. I want to be the best mother, wife, daughter, and friend that I can be and live to make them proud. After that, I can’t specify. Inspiration hits randomly…in the version of stories told by friends or that I read or hear in the news. I’m inspired by those who dedicate their lives to their dreams, those who live with a grateful heart, and those who strive to achieve their goals no matter what others tell them they should be or what hurdles they have to jump to reach them. Who is your favorite author and why? I am a huge fan of anything Jenny McCarthy writes. Her humor, her honesty, her dedication to her family and career…love it all. Can you tell me about your book ‘Happily Ever After’? Happily! To its core, it is a book about gratitude. I share my stories, as well as those of friends, family, and even strangers, as well as research from the world of positive psychology, in the hopes that when people are finished reading it that they will look at life with a new perspective. They will learn little tidbits about my life as it is partially a memoir, but more than that, they will learn the benefits of embracing a grateful heart, told in a relatable way. It is broken down into the different relationships of life, including that with your significant other, children, extended family, friends, strangers, and co-workers, and specifies “Happily Ever Actions” at the end of each chapter to provide readers with takeaways. That’s the description, but to me, it was a passion project. I connected with those who were willing to share their stories with me, created a legacy for my children that I am incredibly proud of, and solidified my belief in the power of gratitude. 108

F E AT U R E You were a contestant on “The Bachelorette” and found the love of your life Ryan. Tell me about your experiences on the show. That I did. The show was six weeks that I will always be thankful for it. I was given the opportunity to meet the love of my life and thanks to Ryan Sutter’s willingness to be part of a crazy, unnatural ride, I did just that. It was an once-in-a-lifetime chance to focus on the development of my own personal love story without the distractions of life getting in the way. My biggest takeaway from my experience as The Bachelorette is to always listen to my gut. It led me to Ryan and has guided me ever since. Are you part of any charities or organizations? If so what are they and how did you get involved in them? I am, and proudly so! I am an Ambassador for First Descents, which provides adventure camps for young adults and adults with cancer. A close friend of ours, Brad Ludden, founded FD and it is through him that we became involved...most recently adding camp mom and dad to our list of First Descents experiences. We believe wholeheartedly in the mission of FD and will always support their hard-work and dedication in proving to cancer patients and survivors that they matter and they are strong and they are most definitely not alone. For more information, visit www.firstdescents.org.I am also involved in the Vail Valley Foundation, which is a local organization in our town that works on programs throughout my community, including one very important to my heart…children. I was introduced to the VVF through friends and have gotten more and more involved over the years, knowing how much they support youth programs, arts, and culture in our valley. For more information, visit www.vvf.org. What would you say your life mantra is? I have two; everything happens for a reason and, happiness begins with a grateful heart. What advice would you give to an individual wanting to follow their dreams? Believe in yourself and go for it! What kept you optimistic when life got tough? Faith and gratitude. Being grateful for the little things and knowing that in the big picture, everything truly does happen for a reason. I can’t know all the answers, but I can be grateful for my life and my experiences and the people who make me smile. All that said, I am the first to admit that taking a page or even a chapter out of my own book is not always easy. I have bad days and bad weeks and bad months just like the next girl next door, but I try to maintain perspective on what matters most, pick myself up, and get back to the good stuff as quickly as possible. WINTER 2015 //

F E AT U R E

F E AT U R E She is able to teach her kid what will keep him alive; never surrender and keep your faith strong. It was such intense work that I cannot talk about it without becoming emotional. When you are telling the story of a real person, who was alive at the time we were shooting, you want to give your best. As an artist you always want to give your best, but in this case we all felt such a big responsibility, we wanted the real Louis Zamperini to love this movie and be proud of us. I just read an interview today where Angelina says that when she went to the hospital to visit Louie for the last time they talked about his mother Louise. I was very very touched. Louis Zamperini’s funeral was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I got the chance to meet all his family, and will never forget the emotions of that day, the way they were reacting when they realized I was the actress playing Louise, they all started crying and hugging me strongly. It was like all the love they had for Louise was given to me in that moment. That love I received that day was densely my favorite part! What are some of your upcoming projects? I will be going back to Italy soon to direct A Winters Tale by W. Shakespeare for my theater company, Racconti di Scena. We are considering some new projects for television, but I cannot talk about it at the moment. What have been your favorite projects you’ve done in the past?

The beautiful actress and producer Maddalena Ischiale is known for her work in Unbroken, Cemetery Man and Luna e l’altra. As a child, Ischiale loved to write, and used it to express her feelings in discovering whom she was in the world: “Writing is something that you do alone and I wanted to be able to communicate with people and have friends… I had so much to express, so many thoughts and ideas.” At the age of 18, Ischiale found an acting workshop where she learned to overcome her shyness and fell in love with acting. “I discovered I was totally comfortable on stage playing somebody else and I learned how to manage and canalize my real emotions and thoughts into the character,” she says. “I enjoyed it so much, that I finally started to be more confident and comfortable on stage and also in real life.” You’ve dipped your feet in directing. Can you tell me more about Mr. Know? How did it feel to be the one directing and producing? Mr. Know is a short movie with Leo Rossi, I love Leo, and am very good friends with his daughter Rose. He is an amazing actor and father. They asked me to help out and I did my best. I didn’t direct the movie, but I helped put it together and produce the short. I am not really interested in directing at the moment. I have directed many theater shows in Italy and am still doing so, but I am here in California as an actor, and I want to focus on that right now. Tell me about the break out role you did for Angelina Jolie’s film Unbroken as the Italian mother Louise Zamperini. What was your favorite part about playing that character? Louise is the loving mother of Louie Zamperini, she is as strong and as proud as an Italian mamma can be in those days, with immigrants risking their life to come to America, without speaking the language or having any idea what their life was going to be. I have so much admiration for those generations that decided to take such a dangerous journey. I play Louise from when she is 28 to 40. From when Louis is a little boy, who constantly gets into trouble, to when he goes to the Olympic and disappears during the war. The relationship between Louis and his mother is a unique bond. What I love the most is that she is always on his side, even when Louis is creating trouble for the family, she is always with him, she prays for him all the time, she believes in him, no matter what. During the war Louise refuses to believe her son is dead. Louis made a promise to come back, and she knows in her heart he will keep his promise to her. What keeps Louis alive in the prisoner camp is the strong love for his family, an Italian family where the mother doesn’t speak a word of English.

With my company in Italy, we put on Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley and I played Babe. I loved that show and the cast. It was a magical experience. I also directed Macbeth. We set it in the Brescia Medioeval Castle, which was a unique experience. Having that magnificent castle as a set for the show was a dream for my imagination. Are you part of any charities or organizations? If so what are they and how did you get involved in them? At the moment, I want to support SPIRAL, a great organization I recently discovered. SPIRAL helps children and youth in need of heart surgery and with disabilities and birth defects such as cleft palate, spina bifida. Silvia Bizio, a great journalist and incredible woman, does so much to help SPIRAL. She told me about it and I immediately felt connected. One of my 3 beloved nieces, Emma, has Down’s Syndrome and when she was born, we were so worried about her little heart and her health in general. I cannot describe how scared I was for her. Emma is my hero, she is a fighter and she is so brave, I created the relationship with my son Louis in the movie based on the strong connection I have with my special niece. What would you say your life mantra is? Leap and the net will appear. And now, after Louie Zamperini; I’d made it this far and refused to give up because all my life I always finished the race What advice would you give to an individual wanting to follow their dreams? Be yourself, be yourself, be yourself. When I arrived here in the USA, before Unbroken, I spent three years receiving so many “No’.” I thought: “How am I going to survive with this constant rejection?” As a human being, we just want to be accepted and loved. It’s natural, but in this industry you are tempted to change yourself in order to fit in some kind of mold, which is especially true for women. I came here when I was 30, I am Italian, I have an accent, even though now I have been working so much on my American. I am curvaceous, not a size 0…. practically all wrong for Hollywood, right? But being exactly like that, I got the chance to work with Angelina Jolie and tell the story of an incredible human being, Louie Zamperini, and contribute to bring his great message to the world. Be clear with what you want to say as an artist, what message you want to share with the world, and that will make you stronger. Stay authentic and true to yourself. Work hard on your craft every day, and something will happen. Always give back, as much as you can. Photography by Keith Munyan

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING We began our Christmas morning bright and early as usual. Primarily consisting of friends and family, but to our surprise some unfamiliar faces joined us in which we gladly invited in with open arms. After gathering for a quick “pow wow” and prayer we all piled into our vehicles and caravanned it to Los Angeles’ infamous Skid Row. We quickly began setting up because our regulars were ready and waiting to see what goodies we had for them this holiday season. Not only did we provide these beautiful faces and souls with yummy favorites such as warm hot chocolate and Cup of Noodles, but we were able to gather over 100 coats and blankets. We topped off our visit with basic essentials such as sock, gloves, and personal hygiene products. It was definitely a day of reflection for each and every individual who joined us that Christmas morning. We completely take several things for granted on a daily basis. Not by any fault of our own, but sometimes completely subconsciously. It is crucial and extremely important to remain grounded and humbled. Instead of thinking about what you are missing think about what you have that everyone else may be missing. If you start becoming thankful for what you have, instead of complaining about what you don’t, then happiness is the only emotion you will feel. “Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.” --Mahatma Gandhi
