ETSY SPOTLIGHT |Bikiniboo

Bikiniboo

from dream to reality I always dreamed of making a living doing something I love... in hindsight my passion of hot sunny days, the beach, having fun, a huge interest in fashion and a love of dabbling with customising clothing and trying new creative things on my sewing machine was always eventually going to bring me to the launch of Bikiniboo. In my eyes, the most important thing in any suitcase has to be the swimwear!! It matters... afterall that is the one thing that I spend 90% of my holidays wearing! The bow bikini will always be the staple design of the range. I have a love for beautiful floral prints along with vibrant prints and bold block colours. There are exciting times ahead - my mind is always thinking up new ideas and on the hunt for amazing prints. My trips to the beach are no longer as relaxing as they used to be, I am always on the lookout for inspiration in the styles and prints that women wear and the way they choose to wear them! www.etsy.com/shop/Bikiniboo

1) What is Tawia Designs? TawiaDesigns is a Ghanaian-American footwear line founded in 2013 by brand architect Manu. Each shoe has a historical African meaning behind it. 2) What is the inspiration that comes from creating each new, unique shoe? The inspiration comes from different tribes on the continent of Africa. The art and culture from various tribes is astonishing. Combining modern footwear with vibrant textiles is a beautiful process. 3) What is the ultimate goal of Tawia Designs? Our ultimate goal is to have our own store not only in the US but also in Ghana. That would be amazing! Everything takes time though.

Les Gars

A Creative Collective

Les Gars founder, Thierry Nzeukou, want to recreate your brand with an African twist. Along with members Badio and Anyang Ndobegang the Tuscon, Arizona natives all hail from the other side of the world. Their aim is to share their culture with the rest of the world in the way they display their images and artistic talents. Nzeukou and Ndobegang are photographers and both are from Cameroon, while their counterpart Badio is from Liberia. They met in 2009 at a social house in Tuscon called “Finally Made”, a place where creative individuals come come together and hangout. “If you were in [Finally Made] you had something up your sleeve” Because of their creative likeness and having a passion for wanting to prove to the world that “african” can be cool and modern they set out to make a business to prove just that.

6 4 S U M M E R 2 0 1 6 / / F E AT U R E

“I want to see if we can redefine what beauty is here in America” says Nzeukou regarding the way he takes his photos. Together they created LES GARS, a french word meaning “the brothers” in early 2016. When describing their company Badio says “it’s a collective more than it is just one individual, it’s a creative house where we all have these different talents and we bring them together to work with different companies who want to present their products in a different way through our vision...We are creating these pieces for people but through the eyes of our ancestors or our african influence” Each member of Les Gars is proud of their heritage and wants it resonate in their work. But Les Gars is not only about photography and videography. Talented member Badio also does music as well as having his own clothing line called “House of Badi”.

F E AT U R E

Badio wishes to bring his culture to the mainstream fashion world, which can still be worn by other individuals other than Africans. He wants to “bring business to my country by means of getting textiles and working with tailors who lived there” While having that bit of Liberian culture influenced in the seams. “We aren't working with only black people we are working with everybody...our style and twist is of african descent, that’s our brand: a heavy african influence in what we do. Part of the aesthetic that we bring into it, it differentiates our work and bit of a signature on our future work” They have a plan to first establish themselves and make the brand known. They each want to reach out to the community and start up programs for kids, mostly underprivileged kids and african kids. “We want to be the bridge to the cool... you can still be cool and have that african influence and show that style” says Nzeukou. Maybe even opening up a school where they can teach fashion and videography. Also wanting to direct their focus in advertising agencies to be able to brand products. They have big plans for themselves and for Les Gars. They all are fans of traveling so they don’t expect to be in one place for long. “We want to go to different places to be able to create something different”. So make sure you check them out when they come to a destination near you. Find them on Instagram @lesgars_

F E AT U R E

Nobuki Kawaharazaki one of Tokyo’s Finest

1. What publishing company did you previous work for and why did you choose to leave and take another career path? I used to work at “Shogakukan”(Can Cam, Domani, Precious). The reason I left the company is that I felt like my photograph skills can be improved more and more if I leave the company and become a freelance photographer than to stay at the company for another year. I also thought there will be more space for me to grow as a photographer and a person. 2. How do you get the person, place or thing that is in front of the camera onto the film, chip or paper in just the way you want? At first, I look into the person, place and a thing very deeply then I think about what is attractive about them. I think it’s important to understand what is attractive about the things before I start taking photographs. I also want to value the atmosphere so I always take a step back and get the whole view. 3.Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photographing, and career path? Hideaki Hamada. He is also my mentor. The one thing he taught me that inspired me is “perspective”. I think there are so many important things when it comes to being an photographer but for me, the most important thing is from which perspective I take pictures. So I always move around when I take pictures so I can see the person, the place or the thing from many different perspectives. I even climb on trees and take photographs from there .

7 8 S U M M E R 2 0 1 6 / / F E AT U R E

F E AT U R E

4.Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that? Through my photographs, I want to express the beautiful moments in our daily life that we usually fail to realize. For example, the moment when a woman flips her hair or the sunlight that filters through the leaves of trees on a beautiful sunny day. There are so many beautiful moments and scenes in our daily life that we fail to realize. To express them, I always take a step back and get the whole view just as I mentioned in the 2nd question. 5.What do you want your viewers to take away from your work? it might sound like a similar answer to the 4th question, but I want viewers to feel the beautiful moments that are hidden in our daily life. 6.What motivates you to continue taking pictures economically, politically, intellectually or emotionally? The connection with the models, hair and make up artists, stylists and crew that I feel when I’m taking photographs, that’s the thing motivates me to continue to take photographs. Also the sense of the accomplishment and happiness that I feel when the project comes out great motivates me too. 7. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? I wish I had touched a lot of arts other than photographs. I think feeling something from art can inspire me as a photographer.

DECOR

Mix & Match For Outdoor Fun Perfect Home Décor for Any Summer Budget by Denny Fernandez for 3 Designing Divas, LLC With summer just around the corner it’s time to get that backyard of yours ready for all those pool parties and family barbeques! This doesn’t have to be an extravagant or overwhelming experience at all. As long as you focus on a few key pieces to add to your already existing template you can achieve a whole, new look without having to spend hardly any money. Did someone say DIY? Depending on how many seats are around your outdoor table make sure to purchase enough placemats, plates, napkins and drinking glasses to go around. Make sure that everything you purchase for your outdoor living space is plastic (not glass) and kid friendly. Last thing anyone would want is a child cutting themselves on a broken glass from a dish or cup. Here is where your DIY skills come into this scenario, and don’t be afraid to try some things out. As you can see, we went with the idea of being outdoors so we took twigs we found around the backyard; spray painted them with a solid and metallic paint and finished them off with jute ribbon. Instead of your traditional napkin rings we created our own fun idea!

SUMMER 2016 //

As a centerpiece, add a tray that can be used for serving while hosting or as a simple focal point that everyone can enjoy! Here, in keeping with the outdoor theme we used a beautiful turquoise bird statue, a silk plant so you don’t have to worry about watering or making a mess and a beverage dispenser with spout perfect for refilling and easy to use for kids. Add a refreshing summer drink the whole family can sip on!

Parent Tip: Want to get your kids to drink more water

Lastly, finish off you entire look with some bold and colorful throw pillows. We love to pull some patterns and contrast by mixing and matching. You never want to match too much because that’s never fun! Show your personality off and be daring for a change. Make sure to add a pillow to each chair so that every one of your guests can be comfortable while they enjoy their stay with you.

Fill a large jug with water, sliced fruit (try citrus, berries or mint) and ice; refrigerate overnight. You’re welcome!
