The forensics concentration in the Criminal Justice program teaches students the skills necessary to preserve at the crime scene, evaluate evidence in the laboratory and testify as an expert witness. Get an inside look into what happens from a crime scene to the lab and to the court – with mock simulations of crime scene processing and evidence evaluations, learning how to write search warrants.

The Conservation Law Enforcement concentration at Thomas College provides students with a strong foundation in the conservation and environmental issues that criminal justice personnel must address in Maine, the New England region, and across the nation. Thomas College’s Digital Media program combines content from the Communications and Computer Science degrees to produce highly qualiﬁed graduates prepared to succeed in digital media careers in a variety of sectors, as well as in graduate programs of related ﬁelds.

The Digital Media program includes two tracks – Web Development and Multimedia Design – to provide you with the ﬂexibility to pursue digital media courses that best ﬁt your interests. Environmental Science & Policy is designed to expand students’ understanding of the natural, social, policy, and economic dimensions of environmental issues and solutions. An IDS major allows for freedom, structure, and a focused exploration of a variety of areas of interest.

Interdisciplinary education is ideal for a highly motivated student looking to address complex interdisciplinary issues in a changing career world.

Students have the option to name their own unique major that ﬁts their interests. The name of a unique major is typically derived from the names of existing majors, minors, and concentrations.

Why Political Science (Public Administration) at Thomas College?

The Public Administration concentration in the Political Science program at Thomas College is focused on a career-oriented path. The concentration incorporates a mix of courses from the political science suite, accounting, ﬁnance, and management. The concentration allows students to take specialty courses, including classes from a consortium of colleges, that then would develop a stronger career path in public administration. Students within this program can go on to work in policy formulation, analysis and implementation, work for a government agency, the government service sector or a non-proﬁt organization, be a government manger, or be a city planner. This could also help prepare students to study in a master’s program in public administration after graduation. With Thomas College’s close proximity to the state capital, Augusta, there are many opportunities for internships and jobs for this program.

Why Psychology (Mental Health) at Thomas College?

Study human behavior with a focus on mental health. A Psychology major with a Mental Health concentration can prepare students to work with a variety of populations that have issues with mental health and/or substance abuse. In addition to all required courses in the Psychology program, students will take Wellness for the Helping Professional (PY260), Marriage and Family (PY326) and Counseling Theories (PY425). Students will also have a fourth psychology elective that will be a choice of Drugs, Addiction and Crime (PY240), Child Psychology (PY335), Adolescent Psychology (PY336) or Seminar in Dementia (PY449), allowing them to tailor the program to the population of their choice. The mental health concentration is a good ﬁt for entry level careers in behavioral health and social work, as well as good preparation for entering graduate school in Social Work or Clinical Psychology.

The Middle School Education Program at Thomas College is the only one of its kind in Maine and enables aspiring teachers to receive dual certification for grade levels 5-8 by pursuing one of three tracks: English and Social Studies, English and Science, or Math and Science. Coursework underscores the importance of co-teaching, inquiry-driven instruction, and interdisciplinary education, and the program is fully customizable. You will spend over 900 hours in the classroom, up to 200 of which are paid, and you can expand your certification to span grades 5-12 by taking our Secondary Methods class. With the three-year option, this program empowers you to follow an accelerated, practical pathway to a rewarding career— with the flexibility to pursue employment across the country through teaching credential reciprocity.

Why Global Sustainability at Thomas College?

A growing ﬁeld, global sustainability is a multi-disciplinary degree program encompassing multiple disciplines offered at Thomas: science, social studies, humanities, education, economics, and business.

This program is especially timely today because of the supply-chain issues creating shortages of products ranging from lithium to helium, oil to wheat, and even including climate-related resources such as water and energy. The time is now for careers and personal understanding of global sustainability. Students in this program will explore social and management principles through the lens of the triple bottom line (People, Planet, Proﬁts) thinking in their careers and personal lives, while also broadening their exposure to global issues and cultures, including environmental justice and social justice. This ﬁeld of global sustainability is growing and jobs are too; the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that sustainability jobs will increase 16% annually for the next decade.
