Yateley - A Great Place to Live This month Twitter and Facebook were sent into overdrive by Yateley residents following the news that our town is considered the second most desirable place to live in the UK. That’s right - our little town has been named as the second most desirable place to live in Britain. The results come from a Royal Mail survey, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the postcode system. The survey took into account factors such as general health of residents, our low crime rates and jobs. While we might be viewed as a commuter village, our employment rates were still enough to see us grace the mainstream news on many sites. But this isn’t our only foray into fame. In 2011 Hart District was named as Britain’s most desirable place to live - knocking the winner of the past 3 years (Elmbridge) from the podium. This was in a study conducted by Halifax, and they looked at even more factors - listing weather, traffic, and broadband access alongside jobs, housing, health and crime rate as why Hart ranked so highly. 95% of people in Hart District were found to be in very good health, and tended to have incomes around 40% above the national average. Out of 1.8 million postcodes, being voted second place is a great achievement, an incredible honour and we’re incredibly proud to be living and working in such a wonderful area - and we hope you are too! 6  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

Party In The Car Park For the past few years, local pub The Ely have teamed up with Adam’s Hoofing Hut to raise money and provide the people of Yateley. Camberley and Sandhurst with a fantastic evening of fun for a great cause. On the 24th of August The Ely opened its doors, and it’s car park, to the public for a fantastic fund raising effort. The atmosphere was palpable, with a huge crowd enjoying the food, drinks and entertainment laid out by the lovely people at The Ely. From 4 a bouncy castle was inflated and ready for children and adults alike to enjoy, and at 6 the food, raffle and music started flowing to create a fantastic party atmosphere that encouraged the local people to dig deep for Adams Hoofing Hut. The event has been going for years, and this year it was bigger and better than ever, with barbeques, full double bar service and some spectacular live bands to entertain the crowd. A live music line up including John James Newman, Southern Companion, Tim Love and Off The Record kept the party going long into the night, and this fantastic effort was once again a rousing success. 8  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

The Party in the Car Park was devised by the owners of The Ely and the people behind local charity Adams Hoofing Hut - a support charity for the memory of a local marine. The aim of the fundraising was to purchase a beach hut in memory of this local hero, and after 4 years of getting together to raise money, the cause has been overwhelmed by support. Last year the party raised over £3000 for the charity, and we eagerly await the results of this year’s event. But it’s not just that - as well as hosting the Party in the Car Park every year, the management team have also been doing a charity bike ride/walk from Edinburgh to Camberley, ending in The Ely for a well deserved pint. The trek saw the team overcome punctures, bad weather and traffic, and an astonishing £6000 was raised in sponsorship - all of which went to Adams Hoofing Hut. That leaves the total donation last year at just over a staggering £9000, and a job well done to the folks at The Ely, and the local community for digging deep for the cause. Adams Hoofing Hut Adams Hoofing Hut is a fundraising effort headed by local people to honour the memory of Royal Marine Commando Adam Robert Brown. Adam was born and grew up in Yateley, and on the 1st of August 2012 he was tragically killed in action whilst serving in Afghanistan at just 25 years old. One of Adams dreams had been to own a beach hut at Mudeford (near Christchurch) where he spent many a happy childhood. Adams Hoofing Hut is designed to be an extraordinary memorial to an extraordinary young man, and will be used mainly by the family and friends of marines who need a place to relax and reflect. Adam enriched the lives of those he came into contact with, and it is hopes that the hut will do the same. On the 23rd of April last year, the owners of Adams Hoofing Hut announced that they had picked up the keys to the hut - and now officially own the beach hut Adam dreamed of. Fundraising is now taking place to refurbish and renovate the current hut through the winter period, while looking to have a purpose built hut in place within the next few years. The group adds ‘we can’t thank each and every person enough for the amazing effort that everyone had given to make this possible, none of which could have been done without everyone’s love and support for Adam.’ Fundraising is open all year round through the Adams Hoofing Hut Just Giving page so if you want to help contribute to this great cause, click through to donate. 9  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

Community Learning Programmes Yateley Adult and Community Learning have been a pillar in the Yateley community for years, and this month they talk a bit about what they do, and more importantly, why. Throughout its history, Yateley has always been a town that supports it’s community and comes together when it really matters. This has been in part to the continued efforts of local organisations and schools, helping to raise and educate the outstanding members of the community that we have today. One of the pillars of this community spirit has been Yateley School, which has been a designated Adult Education Centre since 1971. They are firmly underpinned with that same community ethos - that learning benefits the individual, families, communities, employers, the economy and society as a whole. They also believe that those who participate in this kind of learning are likely to be healthier, happier and better paid than those who pass up the opportunity. Yateley School’s Adult Education programme has been helping members of the Yateley community better themselves for years, and is fully supported by 10  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

the Learning and Skills Agency through Hampshire Futures. This support is both moral and financial, and their continued support is what allows the adult learning classes to take place - along with senior discounts and a reduction of fees for those who are on means tested benefits. This means that anyone can have access to this fantastic quality learning environment, no matter what their circumstances. This same generous funding also subsidises their fantastic Family Learning programme. This programme gives families a chance to come together, have fun and learn new things together in a relaxed and family friendly environment - with no charge. The work that Yateley School does through its outstanding Adult Learning programme also aims to tackle inequalities within our society, and works to empower individuals from under-represented groups to take control of their lives and realise their full potential and everything that they can do. At present over 1,200 adults and families take part in their vast community education programme, and it’s not surprising given the range and quality they offer. Their range of leisure learning classes vary from traditional Ballroom and Latin dance to fundamental cooking, flower arranging, yoga, computer skills for all ages, arts, sports and fitness programmes. They also offer more structured adult learning, where the results include qualifications in Maths, English and IT for those who need them. As well as all of this, Yateley School Community Learning provision also delivers a vast programme of learning activities and classes for children and young people. These activities focus on bringing fun into education, and range from fitness like gymnastics and swimming to cooking lessons and even music lessons, taught through the brilliant tutors at the Yateley Music School. Yateley School Community Learning are always striving to offer our community the very best opportunities they can, and are always adding more and more courses to their repertoire. For a list of all the courses they are running from September, all you need to do is visit www.adultandcommunity. co.uk, or for a friendly chat and some free advice, please call the community learning staff on 01252 877190.

REACHING YOUR POTENTIAL

Could you Foster and make a difference? Remember what it was like to be a teenager? a mix of possibilities, opportunities, hormones and boundaries, homework and exams, people to see and places to go. The Hope We Had The local music scene has always been one of fierce competition - but one local band is breaking through with something wholly unique and original that has to be seen to be believed. If we look back to the beginning of the millennium, Aldershot was a hub of activity with a vibrant and successful music scene. With the likes of local heroes Hundred Reasons and Vex Red bothering the top 20 with singles from their debut albums, and underdogs such as Reuben building a cult following country wide - Aldershot was a place well known for its music. Sadly, this wave of success was a cruelly short one, and when the record industry went into a freefall with the advent of file sharing, major labels struck hundreds of acts from their rosters, claiming Hundred Reasons and Vex Red in the cull. But now, in 2014 there is a spark of hope that the Aldershot music scene will once again rise into the limelight with the emergence of local hopefuls twothirtytwo. The band have spent last two years quietly (and not so quietly) honing their sound whilst developing a fierce reputation for an enthralling and energetic live show. With their debut release ‘The Hope We Had’ about 14  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

to hit the stores (put out by Surrey based label ‘Rose Coloured Records’) they are sure to pique the interest of even the most jaded ears. ‘The Hope We Had’ was recorded at The Ranch Production House in Southampton, home to recent albums by Funeral for a Friend and Gnarwolves. An early review from cult music blog Echoes & Dust describes the record as ‘one of the finds this year’, giving many expectant fans a reason to be excited. Other early reviews of the record have been unanimously positive, suggesting that twothirtytwo might be onto something with this debut effort. Having supported the likes of We Are The Ocean & Maybeshewill live, twothirtytwo have become known for providing a “blistering live show with a wonderful, unique passion” - Toby Mearing (Radio Andra, Sweeden). The band are taking to the road in September to promote the record to a wider audience, with support from another of Aldershot’s up and coming hopefuls, Parachute for Gordo. Local dates in Guildford and Basingstoke should please the bands loyal and ever growing fan base. 07/09 - Brighton, Sticky Mikes 08/09 - Brixton, The Windmill 09/09 - Guildford, The Boileroom 10/09 - Basingstoke, Sanctuary 11/09 - Bristol, The Thunderbolt The Hope We Had will be unleashed into stores on the 8th of September, and will be available from the usual online music suppliers (Google Play, iTunes, Amazon etc). Better still, you can head over to twothirtytwo’s bandcamp page online, and but it directly from them.

Gravity Force Trampoline Park

Bounce Out Of This World!

To many, trampolining is a leisure activity worn out in childhood, and one that can present some risks. But the folks at Gravity Force have taken bouncing to a whole new level. 10 weeks ago a new business opened on the outskirts of Yateley, and in this short time it has become one of the most popular recreational centres in the local area. Gravity Force is a whole new way to move - with a park full of interconnected and angled trampolines that let you bounce of the walls in a very literal way! The massive park, boasting an impressive 27,000 square foot total size and over 6000 square foot of integrated trampolines, is becoming a hub for trampoline enthusiasts far and wide - with people of all ages coming to enjoy some quality bounce time. There are currently 170 trampoline parks open worldwide, but only 2 of them are in the UK. Gravity Force owners and Camberley based couple Luke and Sarah founded Gravity Force after a visit to one in America, and they were hooked on the idea. Pulling together they formed Gravity Force - and their gamble has paid off in spades. In just 10 weeks over 80,000 visitors have 16  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

come through their doors, with 100 jumpers and 50 spectators every hour. Due to their strict health and safety guidelines they are even having to turn people away from some sessions when they are oversubscribed - moving them onto a later bounce so they don’t miss out. General Manager Simon Wilkinson says: ‘Safety is always our number 1 concern. We’ve taken a huge number of precautions in our park, and we feel morally obligated to take care of our visitors. And it’s paid off. The injury rate for trampoline pars in the US is around 1 in 1000 cases - and ours is less than half that.’ With safety taken care of, and staff always on hand to help out if you need it - you are in very good hands at Gravity Force. Even the littlest jumpers need not worry, with special areas just for small people to learn to bounce in before hitting the big courts. The owners are also keen to support the local sporting community. Speaking of the benefits of trampolining to other sports, assistant manager Ali commented: ‘It lets the juniors develop a level of skill, flexibility and creativity that they can take into their sport and improve. Weight boarding, skiing and snowboarding are all sports that can be improved by regular trampolining.’ The park sees a lot of sporting groups come for free training, and many of the staff are British Team trampolinists and gymnasts. It has massive health benefits too. 10 minutes of trampolining is equivalent to 30 minutes of running - and you never even notice that 17  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

you’re exercising! The park is quickly becoming a haven for parents and children as easy exercise - and more to the point - fun! The park will soon be opening a wide variety of sessions for its patrons - including fitness classes, family and toddler sessions, party functions, teen discos and many more to come. The facility is utterly fantastic, and it is run by some of the most passionate and enthusiastic people I have met. The staff are always eager to have a bounce when they can too - and it didn’t take much persuasion to get Simon and Ali onto the floor for some bouncing. The park is unique, and it is run by very unique people who are always striving to deliver the best service possible. So why not go along and give it a try? From their free bounce space to dodge ball courts, huge foam pit and slam dunk basketball hoops you’re bound to enjoy yourself while you defy gravity.

Internet Safety for Parents In this internet age - online safety for our children has always been a concern. But now, a group of organizations have banded together to help you understand how to keep your children safe on the internet. Parents from the Hart District Council area are invited to attend internet safety sessions at schools across the District from September to November. The talks are being held in Partnership with Safer North Hampshire, Hart Local Children’s Partnership and Phil Bagge, a Computing Advisor working for Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service, and are aimed at informing parents about internet safety issues that their children may be facing. Topics covered will include social networking, cyber bullying, online gaming and other online abuse. The first sessions at each school will cover the concerns of the parents/carers of primary school ages, while the second sessions will be aimed at the parents and carers of secondary school aged children.

19  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

The dates are: - 17th and 25th September, Yateley Secondary School - 1st and 9th October, Frogmore Community College - 15th and 23rd October, Courtmoor School, Fleet - 12th and 20th November, Robert Mays School, Odiham All talks will start at 19.00 and finish by 20.00 Liv Stokkan, Community Manager at Yateley School said. ‘Young people have access to the internet on a multitude of devices these days, and learning about the dangers they may face is something that every parent should be concerned about. You may have questions about what they are doing online, and whether it is safe – these talks are an opportunity to get those answers and find out more!’. UK-based iOS App developer TConsult is pleased to announce a sequel to their ‘Come Die With Me’ app. Come Die With Me is the first app to transform paper-based dinner party role-playing games into digital format. Come Die With me brings traditional murder mystery dinner parties into the 21st century with a bang. The host runs the party from a downloaded application which runs on an iPad, and manages the party preparation as well as the game itself. The game’s host application, which costs £4.99, allows organisers to allocate guests to characters and manage email invitations. Uniquely, there are two possible endings to each story… but you have to play the game to find out what they are. Guests can download the client app for free at the iTunes store. The game includes video and audio (including blood-curdling screams) to help create atmosphere as well as hints to help the players secure clues to the murderer’s identity. 22  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

In this exciting second instalment, Come Die With Me takes players into the far reaches of outer space! ‘Set Phasers For Fun!’ is a light-hearted space adventure based on a certain popular 1960s TV show. The players play the roles of starship crewmembers and strange alien species and must once again solve a nefarious murder. Lead Writer, Rob White says, “The first game was largely a proof of concept, and now that we know it is both popular and successful, we can’t wait to release the new game. It should be a funny and exciting game, with plenty of interesting costume ideas.” Developer, Richard Pitkin says “We are always looking to improve the Come Die With Me experience. With this in mind, we will be trying new ideas in the new game, while supporting and updating the first game, so every story stays fresh and fun.” ‘Set Phasers for Fun!’ is currently in development and will be available from the App Store by the end of the year. The Yateley Society - Conservation Work The Yateley Society work tirelessly each month to undertake a variety of work to help ensure our town is still a lovely place to be. This month Graeme Tucker tells us a bit about the Society, and the conservation work they have been undertaking on the Yateley Common. The conservation group working party linked to the Yateley Society meets for 3 hours at 10.00am on the last Sunday of every month at Wyndham’s pond car park (you’ll find the car park on the left hand side coming up Cricket Hill, about 100m past the Cricketers pub). The group helps the Yateley Common Rangers with a wide variety of jobs that are required to maintain the rare lowland heath that makes up the common. You don’t have to be a member of The Yateley Society to join the conservation group – just come along and join in. It is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. More information can be found at www.yateleysociety.org.uk The tasks the conservation group undertakes under the supervision of the Rangers include cutting down scrub to prevent it over growing and forcing out the heather, repairing paths and steps, and helping to keep the ponds clear of invasive weed. Some larger trees and shrubs are left, and no cutting is done during the bird nesting season.

24  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

But why is the conservation work important for Yateley Common? Most lowland heathland developed during or after the Stone Age (some 3,500 years ago) in areas with poor acidic soils, where trees were removed and grazing or burning prevented their re-growth. It typically lies below 300m (above 300m it becomes moorland) with a mild climate. Lowland heathlands are mostly man-made and therefore tend to revert to woodland and scrub without active management. All the plants and animals that have specialised and adapted to the open heathland over thousands of years are threatened if their habitats become shaded and overgrown. Examples are the marsh gentian, southern damselfly, nightjar and sand lizard, which often live only in these kinds of areas. These are the reasons why most lowland heathlands are designated Sites or Areas of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs/ASSIs) under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It may be surprising that open lowland heathland is rarer than rain forest. In the UK it is estimated that only about one sixth (16%) of the heathland present in 1800 remains today. That is similar to an area the size of Cornwall shrinking to the equivalent of the Isle of Wight. The loss has speeded up in recent decades. However, the UK still holds 20% (more than 60,000 hectares) of the world’s lowland heathland. The aim is to not only to preserve and improve our remaining heathlands, but if possible, to re-create them in areas where they have recently been lost. Yateleys own areas of heathland include such spots and Castle Bottom, and require regular care and attention to maintain the delicate balance of life there. If you want to help out in maintaining this beautiful land, get in touch with the Yateley Society or the Yateley Common Rangers to find out what you can do. 25  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

This month as the weather gets colder and we fear summer might be waving goodbye, we bring a little bit of comfort and warmth to your taste buds with this delicious and decedent chocolate cherry roulade. If you’ve been watching The Great British Bake Off, you’ll know some of the things that can go wrong with these seemingly simple recipes. But never fear - this recipe is simple and easy for any baker of any skill level to master - and it tastes great too! `

Our Student Journalist of the Month - Jo Archer Once again we dive into the realms of Yateley School to present you with this months’ student journalist for the spotlight - the talented Jo Archer. This month we are happy once again to present the enthusiastic and talented Jo Archer, who has submitted another of her pieces of AS Level coursework to be published. Jo is 17 and has lived in Yateley all her life, now about to start her second year of A Levels at Yateley School. She has been studying English Language, English Literature, Art and French for the past year, and hopes to take this even further by going to Royal Holloway University to study English Literature next year. Jo cites her favourite author as Charles Dickens, who she says is an inspiration for a lot of her creative work, which she writes when she is not studying or working part time at the local Waitrose.

Bum Bags - The Great Debate Cumbersome, awkward and exceedingly embarrassing- the Bum Bag is Gucci’s drunken distant relative. Chuck it out, insists Kathryn Moss. Alongside sun cream, it’s every parent’s favourite holiday essential but for what purpose? Other than to mortify their children, this item is so useless anyone would believe the soul reason for its creation was to unflatter and to momentarily stun anyone who has to lay eyes on it. The ‘Bum Bag’ is simply a tool for the overly paranoid. Every year unsuspecting tourists cram their passports, tickets and money into these ridiculous looking, bulging bags and they seriously believe that it will act as a full blown insurance policy. You might as well wear a giant pointing, flashing sign that reads ‘I have valuables tied around my waste’. Anyone who believes that a money belt makes you look like a responsible adult is kidding themselves. If anything, a bum-bag creates an air of naivety. 29  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

It has the same look about it as an adult riding a bike with training wheels. It’s just as easy for an artful dodger to unclip your money belt as it is for them to go fishing through your back pocket. The bum-bag definitely lives up to its name. Nothing else embraces flab quite like it. Those who seriously believe it could catch on have obviously have never witnessed it from a spectator’s point of view. You will instantly be transformed into an obese kangaroo the minute you fasten the flimsy plastic buckle around your waste. I can appreciate that people like to keep their valuables safe but surely any idiot can keep their eyes peeled for someone acting suspicious in a crowd and keep their bag firmly locked to their shoulder rather than sporting one of those monstrosities. Even a bum-bag hater such as myself has to be amazed by the efforts big labels such as Mulberry go to each year to redefine the ‘fanny packs’ mystique or lack of. Denims, Aztec prints, leather, durable, fashionable and cartoon prints for younger generations. It’s all been done. It’s no surprise when you find mountains of the things, looking all pitiful with a hint of abandonment, piled up in charity shops in mint condition. A safe haven for securing valuables, concealed by an edgy and unique exterior. Rose Cook rejoices at the Bum Bags quirky physique. Before I attended my first festival in the summer of 2010 I was warned of a fundamental problem. Sardine packed crowds are not the place to bring a holdall handbag nor the place to tediously try to fit all your personal belongings into the seemingly one centimetre deep crevices that are so generously sewn into female clothing. Pick pockets were rife and I was sure that with one wrong turn my Celine handbag would be saturated with mud and battered by the trampling of feet. In the very depths of my mum’s archaic wardrobe, I found a leather ‘Bum Bag’, as she described it. Just as I had put the finishing touches to my camping gear, I customised the little outdated bag with some studs and fringe detailing to give it a bit of on trend edge that I had seen on the catwalk earlier that season. The bag effortlessly held the contents of my survival kit- a condensed form of my day to day handbag. I was ready to take on even the most outrageous crowd. After our little affair at the festival I wasn’t yet prepared to throw the bag aside. It accompanied me on many trips and was the ideal travelling companion for taking on the hustle and bustle of urban cities, as well as for securing emergency supplies whilst cycling on busy roads. The bum-bag is the quintessential purchase to make in the summer of 2014. It has been a trend that has already been sent down the catwalk by Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and even Mulberry 30  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014

backed the idea of hip pouches in their Spring/ Summer runway. Bumbags are no longer the cringe worthy accessory worn by old age pensioners on cruise ships or khaki short wearing, Disney tourists. They have been entirely renovated. Why shouldn’t we be celebrating their new found charm? Handbags have caused several health issues in the past as their weight can cause severe back problems and bum-bags are the solution. I feel a sense of pity for those who can’t appreciate their true utility in an era where we should be revelling in their practicality.

Photo of the Month This month’s winner is in a slightly darker vein than our previous winners, but is no less beautiful. This haunting image was taken by local amateur photographer Sarah Ghallager in an abandoned school in Deepcut. ‘I was just passing by and I caught a glimpse of this toy through the window. I thought it looked interesting so I popped inside - it was just so creepy and beautiful I had to capture it.’ She explained how she didn’t actually move anything for the photograph - simply made sure the lighting worked before clicking the shutter. ‘It’s one of those tableaux’s that you think only happen in movies. but there it was - as if someone had just got up and walked out.’ Sarah grew up in Yateley before moving to university in Brighton, where she studied art and photography. After her course ended she moved back to the area, choosing to settle just outside of Yateley’s borders. She described Yateley as somewhere close to her heart that she could never quite let go of, and it would always be her hometown. 32  The Yateley Magazine | July 2014
