Last year we brought you reports from the front line of Gig on the Green – the most popular musical event in Yateley’s recent history. This year the organization are set to make changes to the event to make it bigger and better than ever – and we have the inside scoop. Picture yourself reclining in the sunshine, sipping a glass of chilled wine and nibbling on a sandwich, whilst listening with friends and family to some truly great music. Now fast forward to June 27th and 28th and this could be you, having another fantastic weekend of fun, friends and music at the Yateley Music Festival, Gig on the Green 2015. Where else can you enjoy 15.5 hours of non-stop entertainment and music for just £22? (if you buy a weekend ticket at Early Bird Prices, available now). As one smart cookie pointed out on Twitter recently, that’s cheaper than a last minute on-the-gate ticket, just for the Saturday alone! If you need any more convincing here’s a taste of some of the great music we’ll be serving up on the Saturday (next edition we’ll focus on the Sunday ‘Unwind’ acts). Our headline act this year is the world’s No1 Tribute act for Coldplay. These international artists, who’ve just returned from a gig in Abu Dhabi, have performed 400 gigs over the last eight years. Their adventures have lead them to appear on Sky News, BBC Radio One and Two and The Gadget Show and they’ve played at festivals alongside Bob Geldof, KT Tunstall, Ringo Starr and Roxette to name but a few. Click here to find out just how good they sound. But that’s not all... we’ve got plenty more delights in store in the form of a Madonna tribute act together with her power house backing group and dancers. If you enjoyed seeing the Queen of Pop at the Brit Awards (minus the impromptu stunt acts!) then you’re going to love this. Not only does she look and sound like the top selling female singing artist of all time, but her show features all the Madonna iconography of spinning disco balls, crucifixes, rodeo riders and conical bras and her audience regularly turns up in full Madonna garb - brace yourself Yateley! 8  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

As ever, we’ll also be showcasing the best local musical talent including local group The Velvet Underwriters, performing a range of music styles from soul and Motown to current hits. In 2009 the group was crowned winners at the Battle of the Bands at Milton’s Hall, so hopefully they’ll be able to offer some useful tips to our own Battle of the Bands Grand finale, featuring four of our finest, hand-picked bands from schools and colleges in and around Yateley. One new addition to the line-up, that hasn’t even made it onto the website yet, is a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute act. This is a local act that appeared at the Gig on the Green a couple of years ago as The Chilli Fighters. They’re back to deliver some true rock classics by this Grammy award winning rock band. This is just a small fraction of the musical delights that we’ll be serving up for you on the last weekend in June. Not only is set to be a real highlight of the Yateley social calendar but as ever, all profits from this fifth Gig on the Green Music Festival will go to improving sports facilities in Yateley, Hampshire, based around Yateley United FC, with the emphasis on the youth of Yateley. As well as being behind the most popular music event in Yateley, the Yateley Sports CIC have also recently had the immense honour of winning the Community Consideration award from Eagle Radio for their efforts with Gig on the Green. You can find out ore about the award and what it means for the group and the event here. If you haven’t got your tickets yet then buy them online at www. gigonthegreenyateley.co.uk or pop down to Discoveries (next to the St Peter’s Church and the Dog and Partridge pub), or Romans estate agents on the Reading Road. Last month we brought you an article about Step By Step, a local youth charity who support children between the ages of 11 and 25 who have fallen on hard times or become homeless. This month we introduce you to their sister group, The Vine Centre, who focus on helping adults in need. The Vine Centre first came to life in 1987 years ago as a soup kitchen in Aldershot, serving hot meals from a church hall to those who had fallen on hard times. 27 years later the organisation has blossomed into a thriving charity who help hundreds of homeless and vulnerable adults from across the North East Hampshire and Blackwater Valley areas. Among their clients are the street homeless, sofa surfers and the vulnerably housed. The Vine Centre exists to help change the lives of the most disadvantaged members of our community, those who lack even the basics of modern living that we regularly take for granted. The centre offers a range of services to support their clients, including essential daily care such as hot food, laundry and showering facilities up to life changing opportunities including housing advice and support, job club sessions and interview guidance to help get them back on their feet. The centre offers a safe and familiar meeting place where clients can engage with any support services and networks they need. Over the years the Vine Centre have developed a central philosophy around providing the best care and improving the wellbeing of each and every of their clients. Their specially designed Journey Programme offers more than 20 services delivered between Monday and Friday, each one designed to restore personal confidence and renew hope and opportunities tin every client. In addition to this, they also manage The Night Shelter Project, which operates between November and March to support the homeless when the temperature drops below freezing. This service has often been a lifeline to some of the most vulnerable adults, and The Vine are able to reach out and support them when they need it most. None of the work carried out at The Vine would be possible without the support of local businesses, community, churches and individuals who donate so generously with time, services and funding. This year The Vine are looking to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness as well as to promote the work of The Vine. If you would like to know more about how you can be involved email corp-development@thevinealdershot.org.uk or call Mary Webb on 07502543375 13  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

Back in March we introduced you to local resident turned racer Tim Glover, and his exciting journey into the world of professional motorsport. Over the course of April he competed in 2 weekend long races, and we are very excited to bring you the results. Round One - Silverstone Easter weekend brought the opening rounds of the Ford Fiesta Championship and a first trip of the year to Silverstone. As with the majority of the circuits this season, it was one I had never driven before and so getting as much track time as possible was going to be vital. Therefore, I had organised some pre-event testing for the Friday, with the intention of getting plenty of seat time in order to learn the circuit and familiarise myself with the car. Unfortunately the plan unraveled straight away. As I walked into the garage I was greeted by the sight of my car, bonnet up and surrounded by mechanics. This isn’t necessarily an unusual sight and so I didn’t think much of it. However it soon became apparent that there was quite a serious issue with the car resulting in it not being able to start. The problem was quickly diagnosed by the team as a faulty ECU (Electronic Control Unit) which is an extremely quick fix provided that you have a spare. Predictably, we didn’t. A replacement was organised to be brought up from the team’s base in Kent, usually a 3 hour drive, which meant we were hopeful I could make it out on track for the last session of the day. As with the rest of the day, this didn’t go to plan either. Due to the bank holiday traffic and the resulting grid-lock on the motorways, it took 7 hours to get the part up to the circuit and so Friday came to an end without a single lap being completed. Far from ideal. Saturday came around without me really knowing what to expect from the day. I had a single 20 minute practice session to learn the circuit after loosing 2 and a half hours of scheduled running from the previous day. With great relief, I completed the session without any further hiccups, using the time to get a feel for the car and find out which way the corners pointed! The resulting time sheets showed that I was second fastest in my class but 2 seconds a lap slower then the leader. Thankfully I knew 15  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

where I could improve my lap time and so went into the afternoons qualifying session confident that I could close the gap to the fastest driver. Qualifying was more of the same, continuing to find my way around the circuit and starting to push a little harder as I felt more comfortable in the car. Something must have clicked as I came back into the pit-lane at the end of the session to find out that I was fastest and had taken my first ever pole position! This was a real boost after the difficult weekend I had had so far and put me in a very strong position for race one. Despite a very grey sky I was hopeful that the weather would stay dry for Sundays two races as I knew I would have good pace providing the conditions were the same as the previous day. The pole position that I had worked hard for in qualifying quickly disappeared as the race started. Being too cautious through the first corner dropped me down to third as two other cars overtook me on either side. However I knew that if I could stay with them I would have the speed to put them under pressure later in the race. After 5 or so laps I got my chance to move back up into second, overtaking the car ahead into the 100mph first corner. I then took my time trying to to pick a gap in which I could overtake the leading car. This wasn’t necessary though as a couple of laps later the driver made a mistake into the tricky Brooklands corner, allowing me to slip up the inside and into the lead of the race! Having never lead a race before the next 10 laps were the longest of my life! I was feeling the pressure with the second place car a couple of meters from my rear bumper for the majority of the race, however I was able to hold my nerve and went onto the last lap still in the lead. Just as I though I had done enough, disaster! Coming into the second to last turn a driver in a faster class tried to lap me, and despite having plenty of room to get past, hit the side of my car forcing me off the circuit. I recovered to finish second but could not believe I had just had my first ever victory snatched away from me. I knew from how close the first race was that it was going to be tough to repeat my performance in race 2. This wasn’t helped by another terrible start that dropped me down to third place. I could see the cars ahead and I was determined to catch up. After several laps I was virtually glued to the rear bumper of the car ahead but more trouble with cars in a faster class cost me the opportunity to improve my position. Every time that I was able to catch I had to move aside to let the faster cars pass, which then dropped me back from the other drivers in my class. This was to be 16  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

an ongoing problem resulting in me crossing the finish line in 3rd place, albeit only 1.2 seconds behind the race winner. Although I wasn’t able to get the results I wanted there were plenty of positives to take away from the weekend (including setting the fastest lap in race 1) and so I will be going all out for the wins next time out at Snetterton. Round Two – Snetterton - 18th-19th April The next round of the UK Ford Fiesta Championship brought a trip to Norfolk, with Snetteron being the venue, this time using the 2.99 mile “300” configuration. Again, like the majority of the circuits I will be visiting this season, Snetterton was one that I had never driven at before. Thankfully, unlike the previous round at Silverstone, I was able to complete a full days testing on the Friday which gave me valuable time to learn the circuit. This would be particularly useful as the championship visits the same venue again later in the year. As with the Friday, Saturday morning came around and greeted us with bright sunshine and warm temperatures, near-on perfect conditions for the first official session of the weekend. As there were no lap times available from the Friday test day, I went into free practice having no idea how fast I would be over the weekend. However I felt comfortable in the car which gave me the confidence to push fairly hard. The results were good, the official times showing that I was fastest in my class, albeit by only one tenth of a second. With the times so close between the drivers in my class I knew that I would have to push even harder in the afternoon’s qualifying session. I went into the session hopeful that I would be able to set the fastest time in class. However, despite improving my lap time by 2 seconds, it wasn’t enough to claim my second pole position in a row. With the other drivers also improving, my time was only good enough for second, 0.3 of a second from the fastest car. After enjoying brilliant weather all weekend it was typical that Sunday brought heavy clouds and a dark sky. Despite the drop in temperature and a few spits of rain the conditions stayed dry for both of the days races. A great get-away from the line saw me leap frog the car in front and take the lead going into turn one. This didn’t last long and I was back down 17  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

to second approaching turn 2. With the lead changing several times in the next few corners I eventually settled down in second, right on the bumper of the leader. After a lap of following behind I saw opportunity and took back the lead of the race. Again, I tired to create a gap to the car behind but just couldn’t shake him off and after a couple of small mistakes I was forced back down to second. In my haste not to let the car ahead get away, I made another, more costly mistake, which resulted in me sliding sideways off the track and across the grass, just missing the armco barrier. I was down to third with no chance to being able to catch back up to the leader. Instead I pushed as hard as I could to try and score the extra point that was on offer for the fastest race lap and before I knew it I was suddenly catching the second place driver. I was able to overtake with a lap or so to go which resulted in me finished second in class (including the extra point for fastest lap!) Race 2 was a much less eventful affair and also a less successful one unfortunately. After the incident in race one I took the decision to make changes to the car set up in an attempt to make the rear of the car more stable through the faster corners. Although the car was more stable, it proved not to be any faster and I struggled for the majority of the race stuck down in p3. It was only towards the very end of the race when I, again, suddenly found myself catching the car in second. I pushed as hard as I could but it wasn’t enough, crossing the line in third by just 0.092 of a second! Despite achieving some more solid results, I was slightly disappointed to still have missed out on a race win. A trip to Donington Park is next up on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of May. You can get regular updates through each race weekend by following me on Twitter, @TimGlover99

In order to raise some money for a good cause, and to show off her love of cats, local woman Laura Hale will be enjoying the thrill of a lifetime. In a truly selfless act, local cat lover Laura Hale will be doing a sponsored sky dive to raise funds for our local Cats Protection branch, Camberley & District, on the 19th of August. She is taking part in the sky dive to try and help the branch take care of as many unwanted felines as possible, and help them find the new homes they so desperately need. The tandem sky dive is due to be made at Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury, with a member of the Red Devils elite sky diving team. As friends and family are welcome to spectate, Laura hopes her own supporters will be there to cheer her on. Laura said: “I decided to skydive in support of Cats Protection because my family has always adopted Cats Protection rescue cats and we love them to bits. I’ve seen the fantastic work the organisation does to rehabilitate and rehome unwanted cats and kittens, and was inspired to volunteer with fostering and fundraising myself. This will be the first skydive I have ever done, and it is incredibly daunting. I would love people to sponsor me, so I can make a real difference.” Sarah Lewis, Publicity & Media Officer for Cats Protection added, “We are a very busy branch, run entirely by volunteers, and find loving homes for more than 170 unwanted cats and kittens every year. However, we are in constant need of funds so that we can continue, and hopefully expand, our cat care work, so I’d urge people to sponsor Laura if they can, they will be making a big difference.” To sponsor Laura, please make a donation to her Just Giving page or to adopt a cat, or find out how you can help, please call Cats Protection’s Camberley & District branch on 0345 371 2745.

Earlier in April students from Yateley School donned their business attire and gathered at Pinewood Golf Course for the area final of the Young Enterprise Programme to present their businesses. Young Enterprise’s Company Programme is supported by HSBC and is aimed at 14 to 19 year olds. Participants set up and run businesses for an academic year, guided by local mentors. The Awards highlighted how the Young Enterprise Company Programme can inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and help them develop practical business skills while they are still at school. Over the past few years Yateley students have been banding together every year to form their own companies for the competition, and this years is no exception. The programme has gained popularity within Yateley School over the past 6 years, with over 50 children joining in this year. The school sees the Young Enterprise programme as a fantastic change for the children to develop their teamwork and communication skills, engage in problem solving and boost their confidence when presenting and working in the business world. Over the course of the school year 5 different groups have been working hard in their spare time to plan and develop their brand and their business, designing logos, planning finances and the products they would be selling. They participated in trade fairs in Aldershot, Farnborough and Basingstoke shopping centres to sell their products to the public, participated in ‘Dragons Den’ style interviews and submitted adverts for judging, all leading up to the regional finals in early April.

About Young Enterprise Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity, working with young people aged 4 to 25. Their company programme was designed to educate young people about setting up and running their own business, and trying to promote entrepreneurship. The participants in the programme each set up their own companies, either individually or in groups, and run them for a full academic year under the guidance of local business mentors. Various student assessment surveys 24  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

have found that 82% of participants felt taking part in the programme had given them the confidence to succeed in the future, and even teachers believed that the programme has increased student self awareness of their own potential, and raised their career aspirations for the future.

Young Enterprise works with an extensive support network with over 5,000 volunteers and 3,500 businesses to encourage young people to get involved in the programme. They also support the teachers, helping them to plan and deliver financial education programmes to students. For over 50 years now Young Enterprise has worked with over 4 million young people across the UK to empower them to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need for the world of work through enterprise. Michael Mercieca, Chief Executive of Young Enterprise said: “The Area Finals are the penultimate stage in finding the UK’s Best Overall Company, and all the teams here today have achieved so much over the past year. The Company Programme is a great platform for students to develop their skills such as confidence, teamwork and resilience and interact with their local business community along the way. 25  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

The area finals were filled with a fantastic selection of companies, and the atmosphere was charged with positivity. Among the contestants were Yateley Schools 4 companies, including their youngest group, a year 10 company named PRYDE, and their oldest, a sixth form group called Authentic London who won the advert portion of the competition earlier in the year. Yateley School’s teams performed admirably, giving stirring presentations of their products, but sadly their teams did not go through this year, but they hold high hopes for future years.

Tucked away at the edge of Yateley, Yateley Baptist Church has been offering a place to worship alongside many other activities over the years, and this month pastor Ray Smith wants to remind you of the good work the church is doing. It is 190 years since a Baptist church in Reading sent William Holland, formerly of Hartley Witney, to preach the good news of Jesus Christ in Yateley. Initially this was in his own home, a little cottage called the Nest, which is on Cricket Hill Lane. From this humble beginning he built a chapel on the other side of the road in 1827 and from that date the same message has been declared to the community and to those who have found themselves placed in Yateley not necessarily of their own choosing. For instance, during the second World War hundreds of airmen from around the world literally living on the door step of the chapel in Missen huts found a spiritual home for the duration. Around the same period the young people from the church started services in the old Methodist chapel at Eversley Cross supposedly for 6 months, but actually it lasted for 20 years. Over the years the church itself has sent out some 8 men to be pastors or missionaries to declare the same message in the UK and overseas. Currently one of those men has a Radio and Literature ministry to the French speaking world primarily in Africa in places like Timbuckto in Mali. One of the direct descendants of George Parker, founder of the funeral directors and a former member of the church, is a pastor in Florida. So the same message is reaching the ends of the earth from the chapel on the hill. Over the years the church have been very grateful to God for faithful men who have been the Pastors of the church. They have been responsible for the preaching each Sunday and for the pastoral oversight of the church. In September 2012 the current pastor Andrew Wigham joined them at Cricket Hill. He has a young family and is looking forward to getting to know more people in the town in the future. The church meet on Sundays for Bible study at 10am (during term time), then for praise, prayer and teaching at 11.15am and 6pm. The children have their own activities during the morning meeting. During the week you can meet at the church or in Fellowship groups for discussion of the sermon preached on Sunday and prayer. The Ladies have a meeting on Thursday mornings. There are also midweek activities for children and young people ranging from Toddlers Time (up to age of 4), Sonseekers (5 to 10) and 3Ts (11+). 28  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

The church were also asked to take services at Hedgecroft on at least four occasions during the year and it is wonderful to share fellowship with the more senior members of the local community. They have recently begun a new venture which they call Holiday at home. This is an opportunity for those in the area who are no longer able to travel too far to spend a few days with us at the church. During this there will be a craft time, entertainment and a day out as well as an opportunity to reflect on the message of the bible. This has grown in popularity and they hope to have the event again in the summer of 2015. If you would like someone from the church to contact you directly or if you require further details of any of the meetings mentioned in this article please go to the church website www.yateleybaptist.com or ring 0870 765 2066

These soft, fluffy balls filled with cream and topped with chocolate are a classic family favourite and the perfect dessert to break out with the summer weather. Made from scratch, these profiteroles are as light as air, filled with delicious orange cream and drenched in a rich chocolate sauce. Flavour the cream with anything you like for a personalised dessert guaranteed to set your mouth watering.

Ingredients: For the choux pastry:

For the cream filing:

For the chocolate sauce:

200ml of cold water 4 tsp of caster sugar 85g of unsalted butter 115g of plain flour 3 medium eggs, beaten

600ml of double cream 1 orange (zest only)

100ml of water 80g caster sugar 200g good quality dark chocolate, broken into pieces

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°c. Place a small roasting tin in the bottom of the oven to heat up.

2. To make the choux pastry, place the water, sugar and butter into a large

saucepan. Heat gently until the butter has melted.

3. Turn up the heat, then quickly pour in the flour and salt in one go. 4. Remove the mixture from the heat and beat vigorously until it forms a smooth paste. Once the mixture comes away from the side of the pan, transfer it into a large bowl and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes.

33  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

5. Beat in the eggs, a little at a time, until the mixture is smooth and glossy and has a soft dropping consistency. 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Using a piping bag and a plain

1cm nozzle, pipe the mixture into small balls in lines across the baking sheet. Gently rub the top of each ball with a wet finger – this helps make a crispier top and stop any tips from burning.

7. Place the baking sheet into the oven. Before you close the door, pour half a cup of water into the roasting tin at the bottom of the oven, and then quickly close the door. This helps to create more steam and helps the pastry rise better. Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until light golden brown. If your profiteroles are too pale they will go soggy once cooled.

8. Remove the tray from the oven and turn the oven off. Prick the base

of each profiterole with a skewer. Put them back on the baking tray with the holes facing upwards and place back in the oven for 5 minutes to dry out the centres.

9. For the filling, lightly whip the cream with the orange zest until soft

peaks form. When the profiteroles are cold, use a piping bag to fill the profiteroles with the cream.

10. For the chocolate sauce, place the water and sugar into a small

saucepan and bring the chocolate to the boil to make a syrup. Reduce the heat to a simmer and place the chocolate into a heatproof bowl set over the pan. Heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. Take the pan off the heat, pour the syrup mixture into the chocolate and stir until smooth and well combined.

11. To serve, pile the profiteroles into a large serving dish and pour over the chocolate. Serve with extra chocolate sauce or cream.

My first encounter with a pair of dungarees occurred way back when I was a little’un, incapable of dressing myself. My mum dressed me how every other little girl (and boy) dressed and dungarees happened to be a staple part of every child’s wardrobe. If you’d have told me when I was toddling around in my dungarees that 12 years from now “you’ll be bang on trend!” I would never have believed you. Not only are high street labels such as Topshop and River Island lapping up the charming trend of the dungarees, celebrities are loving them too! Katie Holmes, Rihanna and Alexa Chung have all been spotted working this absolutely marvellous creation. The variety of denim colours flaunt their versatility even more, with sophisticated black and crisp whites, perfect for cheeky first dates or a day out in the sun, all the way to a luminous pink which could be perfect for a wild night out clubbing in Ibiza. Pair with a crop top underneath and sandals to achieve the laid back summer’s look or chuck a chunky knit underneath and you’re ready to paint the town! They really are a girl’s best friend with the endless possibilities of dressing up/ 36  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015

down.Whatever you wear these fabulous dungarees with you will still have the ‘adorable yet trendy’ look going on. So if you fancy yourself as a Rihanna or Alexa, bag yourself a pair while they’re still hot! Dungarees are this season’s hottest trend and I don’t see them vanishing from our stores any time soon. Frumpy and childlike, dungarees should be for children only! Vienna Jones argues against dungarees. Don’t get me wrong, I love fashion and seeing the latest trends. London Fashion Week is the highlight of my entire year and watching angels such as Cara Delevigne strut their stuff on the Stella McCartney catwalk at Paris Fashion Week has to be the highlight of my life. But that’s exactly it: I love ‘fashion’, not an attempt at fashion that, in my opinion, has fallen face first. Dungarees are back on the catwalk with women wearing them. Women. Not children or farm workers. When I first saw the appearance of dungarees on the catwalk I thought it was a conspiracy, the fashion world mocking the sad excuse for a trend but unfortunately, I was wrong for they genuinely have returned. Dungarees contain the very intimidating power to make any woman look at least 2 sizes bigger due to the un-even distribution of material and the unflattering material used to construct this sad excuse for ‘fashion’. I’ll admit, they are comfortable, but so is a one piece and over my dead body would I be seen in one of those. Denim is the main material I’ve seen. And not just the typical blue denim, but different colour denims too. The most revolting I saw was a mustard colour denim worn by Becca Cole.A shame because after seeing her look flawless in a custom made Roberto Cavalli gown at 2013’s Golden Globe Awards, almost anything seems practically mediocre in comparison I don’t blame her though. I blame the ridiculously unflattering dungarees. If you think they make you look unique, quirky and cute then you are wrong. Regardless of who the designer is, the only look you will achieve is an over worked builder. You have been warned. 37  The Yateley Magazine | May 2015
