A Note from The Editor Hi there, and welcome to the first issue of The Yateley Magazine! It’s incredibly exciting to be a part of producing this magazine, and it’s certainly been a rollercoaster to get here. We set out to create a monthly magazine of real community interest, that gives you stories about the town, community and a valuable resource for finding local businesses - and that’s what we are giving you today. Every month we will be bringing you local news, community stories and even competitions, and I encourage anyone with something interesting to say to get in touch so we can help you spread the word. In our debut issue we have a sneak peak and preview the latest line up for our newest Yateley tradition - Gig on the Green. We have a chat with some of our local musical groups, interview a few local business owners about their businesses and lives in our town, and ask our very own Mayor Gerald Crisp some questions about his time in office. Keep an eye out later on for our ‘Younger Yateley’ section - encouraging the youth of Yateley to get involved with the community through writing, art and cooking. We also feature Richard Carman, the first winner of our regular photo competition and much, much more. If you have a story to share or an event to promote, we are keen to help, so please send us an email to submit to the next issue. So on behalf of The Yateley Magazine we welcome you, and hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we did creating it! Get involved in the conversation! Follow us on Twitter: @YateleyMagazine

Gig on the Green 2014 The Gig on the Green may be one of Yateley’s newer traditions - but it’s turned out to be incredibly popular, and thanks to the Yateley Sports CIC this year’s show promises to once again rise to the occasion. With the first gig debuting in just 2010, it has since become a hub for the Yateley community to gather every year and enjoy a day of music, dancing, comedy and fun, right in our own back garden. But it doesn’t just stop there - every year we see hundreds of Yateley residents gather together on our iconic green, not just for fun, but to support and encourage emerging local talent. From the youngest residents up to the oldest, all are united in their love for inflatable slides, community spirit and local musical talent. Gig on the Green encourages all ages and abilities to get involved, and there are 2 main sections that really get us excited. Y Factor Every year the folks behind Gig on the Green hold auditions for the aspiring young singers of Yateley. The Gig on the Green gives them a chance to shine and encourages their growing talent, and we have had many youngsters pursue promising music careers because of the boost performing on the stage gave them. Most notable of these is Alexa Goddard, who has since been signed to a major record label. There are 3 age categories for Y factor, and the winners of each category are given the chance to perform at the Gig on the Green 2014. Auditions for this year have just taken place, with the winners of the categories still to be announced, so watch this space! Yateley Unplugged The Yateley Unplugged stage is aimed at the more mature residents of Yateley, showcasing a number of over 18’s and older local bands. This gives them a great chance to perform live in front of a captive and supportive audience, and maybe even break into the big time with their acts.

Last Year’s Show Last year we were blown away by a huge line up of fantastic acts including tribute acts The Rollin’ Clones, Quo-incidence and Abba Fever, an amazing selection ofPhothe to © youngest local talent performing onstage for the first time and 360 even Mea wildly popular performance of show tune numbers fromdia the Stumusical Grease. dio Ltdof We saw the largest number visitors flock to the green to see the show, and we expect even more to come out and show their support this year. This Year’s Show The line up for this year’s show is still mostly cloaked in mystery, with only a few acts revealed for us so far, including incredible tribute acts Green-ish Day and Only One Direction, and a breathtaking performance will be given by An Evening of Dirty Dancing: The Tribute Show. Clear your calendar for the 28th of June and get yourself down to the Green for the biggest Yateley event of the year! http://www.gigonthegreenyateley.co.uk/ All photographs courtesy of 360 Media Studio Ltd.

A Word in Your Ear... From the Mayor! We capture a few words from the generous founder of Vision 4 Yateley and Mayor of Yateley Gerald Crisp about his life in office. What inspired you to become mayor? The desire to become mayor only occurred after I was approached to stand as Mayor. My first reaction was to decline because I was relatively new as a town councillor and not particularly drawn to being just a ceremonial figurehead. But I went away and thought about it, and on further consideration, I felt that in the role of Mayor I could serve in a unique roll on behalf of the town. This would give the office more opportunities to connect fully within the community. This idea established itself within what I called ‘The Mayors Project’, which would seek to develop and grow closer relationships within the many organisations that contribute to our community life, which would them grow over time to become a Community Partnership serving every area of life within Yateley. 12  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

Can you describe your mayoral journey? In looking to achieve the community partnership above I began by focussing in two areas. The first was within the business community and was launched last month as a local business consortium. This started as a consequence of my Mayor Walkabout with visiting all our local retailers and businesses. Following on from my introductory visits, I found a very positive response, with a desire to meet up with fellow businesses for mutual support and to share and learn from one another. The other focus was to form a charity, ‘Vision for Youth’ to develop a Dedicated Youth Centre, which would provide our youngsters with a ‘Happy Days’ type club to call their own. This would also include the opening of a community cafe on the village green for day time use, primarily for mums and toddlers, using the village playground and play-school. The cafe would then be used as a coffee club in the evening for our young community. This would also serve as a second chance to meet the Needs of our Needs, being school leavers ‘no longer in education, employment or training.’ This would give them an opportunity primarily in catering, alongside experience in how to run a business! This project will cost the charity in the region of £200,000, so as Mayor I will be supporting V4Y as my charity. I will also be looking to fundraise within the community to reach our goal and fulfil this vision for the youth of Yateley. What are your best memories as mayor so far? My favourite memories in my time are numerous, but if I had to choose one, then it would be the opening of Fruition Central above a parade of shops, as a temporary youth centre on a short term lease, which I opened jointly with a TOWIE celeb. This followed over 30 years of waiting for a specialised youth club of their own. Until we build their club on the green, which we hope will open in the Spring of 2015, this is theirs. What’s your favourite Yateley event? My favourite Yateley event has to be the huge success of Gig on the Green, now entering its fourth year next month, of which the money raised has given the opportunity for the purchase of Sean Deveraux park from Cemex, for the benefit of Sport in Yateley. 13  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

A Taste of Local Music Dig those Fabulous Flutes! Flute Salad started out as a group of youngsters playing their flutes in Louise Rayner’s living room for fun, and 8 years later here they are, bigger and better than ever! This lively bunch get together every week to laugh, joke and celebrate their unifying passion - music. Playing a range of music that varies from Mozart to the Muppets, the group has flourished to over 30 students - they even played at Louise’s wedding! Louise now runs 3 different flute groups and a fledgling saxophone group. They don’t just play covers either - a lot of their music has been arranged by Louise or other members of the flute choir to give it a more personal touch. ‘We’re not just about the music. It’s a place where children can come and socialise and mix with children they wouldn’t normally meet on common ground.’ 14  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

Flute Salad plays regularly at festivals and concerts, quite often bringing both tears and laughter with their incredible music. A vibrant and lively group, it’s clear within seconds that these children love what they do. Both the flutes and the saxes are always looking for enthusiastic new members with a love for music. There are 3 age groups and all abilities to chose from so there is something for everyone. With Fresh Fruit Salad as a beginners section, Flute Salad for intermediates and Flute Cocktail for the more advanced players, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been playing for years or only just started learning to play- rock up and enjoy the atmosphere!

Louise is currently looking for more lively players to join her saxophone group - Smartphones. Having spent a delightful session with them this week, I can safely say they are great fun and produce fantastic music - a real group to look out for in future. The group meets on Saturday mornings between 10.30 and 11.30 at Yateley School, and always welcome new players. For more information on any of the groups contact Louise on 07971260579 or email lou.r13@talktalk.net http://www.flutesalad.org/ 15  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

A Caterers Journey It all began with a bet... In 1996 Tilsmere’s founder, Kathryn, had a bet with a local media representative, David Chubb. David was sponsoring lunch for some local GP’s, and Kathryn bet him she could cook a two course hot meal for less money than he would spend buying cold, pre-packaged food at the supermarket. She won the bet, and has never looked back - she even still cooks for those same GP’s every week. At the time, Kathryn was working as a home economics and catering teacher at our own Yateley Secondary school, where she taught countless young people how to prepare home cooked, healthy meals over the course of her 20 year career. Kathryn then decided to put what she was teaching into practice, and so Tilsmere Catering was born. Since then, Tilsmere has become a member of the family. Kathryn’s husband Ross and their three daughters have all been involved as the business grew. As a family of foodies, they all enjoy developing and testing new recipes, and 16  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

experimenting with new flavors. Tilsmere specialise in delivering high quality food that looks stunning and tastes even better. Decades of experience in food science and experimentation have ensured that they always rise to meet any challenge - including weddings, birthdays, funerals, and even a 5 day (and night) stint of cooking high class meals for the British Army at Sandhurst. Catering for any allergy or requirement, Tilsmere are the best, and most affordable caterer around. Kathryn has also taken some time out to travel - visiting Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand to collect new and exciting recipes to test and adapt. These have all made it onto the menu and even into her latest culinary achievement - becoming a published food writer. Her most recent success has been the launch of her very own recipe e-book, now available to download from the ITunes store. Inside you can find over 50 delicious recipes from all around the globe - showcasing the family favorites and the signature dishes that have defined Tilsmere’s quality and service over the years. Enjoy the View - Walks around Yateley Welcome to our walking trails section - a regular feature devoted to giving you a new walking route in Yateley to explore every month. Our routes will cater to every walking ability and help you discover some of the most picturesque corners of Yateley.

This month our walk takes you around the serene Hawley Lake. This trail is 3.66 kilometres (about 2.3 miles) with a very gentle incline of no more than 10 ft and a stunning view to keep you company. There are even a few spots for a relaxing picnic, so it’s a great walk for the family on a warm weekend. Situated just off of the A327 (Minley Road), the Hawley lake complex is easily accessible by road, less than 5 minutes drive from the village. The Crown & Cushion Pub is just across the road from the entrance, perfect for grabbing a cold drink after a hot summer walk.

Where is my Prints Charming? Self professed ‘local girl’ and business owner Hana Laurie has kindly agreed to share her story with us this month. Taking control from a young age, we see how she shook off the 9-5 and became her own boss. My name is Hana Laurie, and Prints Charming is my right-hand-man. I have been working as a wedding and events photographer for a few years through uni, and since graduating in 2011 I’ve been putting on photobooths in some incarnation or another. What started off as just a curtain, camera and a large monitor, has come a long way since then! Allow me to rewind a bit. Back before the Millennium I was a small, bright eyed child with no direction or aspirations to what I’d be “when I grow up”. I attended Yateley School for the first time in the September of 1999 and began to shape my interests in music, creativity and people. Being a moderately academic person, I did well at Yateley and really enjoyed the five years I spent there. Living in Sandhurst but having all of my friends in Yateley meant that it has always been a great social place for me, I also worked in The Cricketers for around 7 years! From school I moved to Farnborough 6th Form to study Photography. I was 16, and found that my love of art could be expressed so much more freely with a camera rather than my clunky, inelegant drawing! I was hooked, and it became a subject that drove me through University in Southampton and enabled numerous career opportunities – all of which I am following with gusto.

There’s no real secret to success. There are certainly a few things you need, and I won’t deny that one of them is just plain good luck. You can have the best business plan/funding/idea/execution/enthusiasm and skills going, but if you’re just plain unlucky then it can all go pear shaped. That being said, luck isn’t going to get you very far on its own either! Things have changed, a lot. Our parents will tell us that, and even those who have older siblings are being told how different things are in an even smaller amount of time. We are no longer in the era where loyalty to a business is expected. In 2014 we’re experiencing fast moving businesses, trends and technologies and you need to be extremely flexible and up to date to keep up!

I spent a year in an office job after graduating from Uni, and found it really stifled my creativity. It was a good job, with good pay and good benefits. It was in Basingstoke too, so the journey wasn’t bad… but it still just didn’t cut it for me. I wanted more! I approached my Dad with a business plan, and together we purchased Prints Charming – the photobooth that was going to change everything. For 18 months now I have been successfully running the business alongside working part time in a pub and also as a wedding/events/ family photographer. Keeping the Prints running requires organisation and planning - I need to be aware of what I’m doing, but crucially what other 24  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

people are up to as well. It requires a huge amount of work and even more determination to make sure that you’re professional, delivering the service you’ve advertised and unfortunately, keeping on top of your tax return! There are so many other things involved in being successful in working for yourself, but from what I’ve learnt being a local business owner is there’s nothing like having the right work ethic and having many strings to your bow! If you’re young in Yateley at the moment, know that the whole world is at your fingertips, and be aware of the almost unending opportunities available to you should you want to take them. Life can be incredibly exciting and rewarding if you’re doing something you love – just be aware that it often means doing it 7 days a week! My current employment sees me running the Photography and Photobooth businesses, and working part-time at The Greyhound in Finchampstead. I’ve recently added A Level Lecturing in Photography to my roster of jobs and also train in British Sign Language and a Diploma in Teaching. If you think you have another project for me, or any photographic requirements – then the best way to get something done is to ask a busy person! www.printscharmingphotobooth.co.uk

Photo of the Month Winning Entry - Richard Carman

For our debut winner we welcome avid hobbyist photographer and long time Yateley resident, Richard Carman. Richard describes himself as an IT geek by day, starting out building websites before moving into the Royal Engineers and then into the AV business. But by night he enjoys life as a swimmer, cyclist, cook and dog walker, while capturing it all on his trusty iPhone. 27  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

Starting out in the digital field by building websites in his bedroom, Richard quickly excelled and enjoyed decades of success in the AV industry. He then started out as an independent consultant, and is now known as the illustrious Digital Alchemist. He’s even a published author following an invitation to write a chapter on User Experience (UX) Design in the Fresh Business Thinking book - ‘Hit Me! How to get your small business punching its weight online.’ But on the side, he enjoys long walks around the scenery of Yateley, and most of his beautiful photos are taken in the early hours while walking his dog. This amazing scene was captured at our well known ‘Castle Bottom’ area on Yateley Common, and was our favourite of his collection. We spent a lot of time searching for our first winner, and Richards’ large collection of fantastic nature shots gave us a lot of chose from. Baked Rhubarb and Passion Fruit Pudding Embrace the flavours of Spring with this delicious dessert. Perfect hot or cold, tangy Rhubarb and succulent Passion Fruit are best served with a dollop of whipped cream on a warm evening. Ingredients: • 400g thin, pink rhubarb stalks • 225g caster sugar • Butter, for greasing • 7 ripe and wrinkly passion fruit • 3 large, free-range eggs, separated • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 75g self-raising flour

• 150ml semi-skimmed milk • 150ml single cream • Large pinch of cream of tartar • Icing sugar, for dusting

29  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

Method: 1.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan170°C/gas 5. Cut the rhubarb into 4cm lengths and place in a shallow baking dish with 75g caster sugar and 4 tablespoons water. Bake for 30 minutes, until just tender but not falling apart. Tip into a sieve over a bowl and cool. Reserve the juice.

2.

Lower the oven temperature to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4. Lightly butter a 2-litre shallow ovenproof dish and arrange the rhubarb over the base. Halve the passion fruit and scoop out the pulp into a sieve set over a bowl. Rub the pulp through with a wooden spoon, then discard the seeds.

3. Put the egg yolks and remaining caster sugar into a bowl and whisk together until thick and pale. Whisk in the lemon zest and passion fruit

juice. Sift over the flour and a pinch of salt and mix in. Next, stir in the milk and cream until combined.

4.

Whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar together in a large, clean bowl until they form soft peaks. Fold the egg whites gently into the passion fruit mixture. Pour the mixture over the rhubarb and place the dish in a large roasting tin. Pour boiling water into the roasting tin until it comes halfway up the sides of the dish, and bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes, until the centre of the pudding is firm to the touch.

5.

Remove the dish from the roasting tin. Serve the pudding warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar, and with the reserved rhubarb cooking juices.

Your Planning is in Safe Hands! Let us be the first to welcome an exciting new business in Yateley and introduce Jason Dalton, owner and founder of Safe Hands Events.

Jason has lived in Yateley for the last nine years with his partner and their beautiful British Bulldog Ethel. After spending many years in banking and bookkeeping, Jason has decided to strike out in a completely different direction - event planning! The idea for the business first started back in 2011, when Jason found himself planning his own wedding. After organising a beautiful day that went off without a hitch, he has been helping friends organise hen nights, stag do’s and parties - and so Safe Hands Events was born. We asked Jason to explain the process for us. “First, the couple decides what they want for their wedding. They come up with all the ideas, which I can offer suggestions on if required. Once they’ve decided they then have to find and buy these things - and that’s where I focus”. Jason went on to explain: “Then the hard work begins –finding what they want is down to me, while they carry on with their busy lives. My service is to research and find suitable and available suppliers, review each company to check the quality of their offerings and present a range of options to the couple. I keep to their budget, save them time and it means they can have the wedding of their dreams without all the stress. The couple make all the decisions, so their day is their personal choice and they can relax, safe in the knowledge their plans are in safe hands!” But Safe Hands isn’t about a complete planning package. After talking to a lot of couples about what stops them using a wedding planner, Jason found they came up with two reasons - cost and creativity. They all felt that they could make the decisions for their wedding and didn’t need much help with that, but they ran out of time to actually implement them. Jason now prefers to call himself ‘the dating agency of wedding planning’, working in the supplier and procurement area to connect the couples with the services and supplies they need. 31  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

‘I don’t want to take away your day and plan it all for you. My service is designed to let you make the creative decisions, and I’ll help you source what you need quickly and at the best possible price.’ Wedding planning is a 3 stage process - the first part is the creative decisions, the design, colour schemes and so on. The next stage is sourcing and procurement, and this is where most couples need a little help, cue Jason. The third stage is usually taken care of by the venue - making sure the day runs smoothly for you. Instead of having a fixed package for everything, Safe Hands Events offers a flexible service, which lets you build your own wedding, making use of Jason’s knowledge and connections where you want to. Jason will step in for advice and help when you need him, but still lets you keep control of your special day, like a pay-as-you-go wedding planner. Jason was very excited to advise prices, which he feels make his service perfect for ANY couple who want help with ideas and need to find extra time to achieve it. Starting at only £59, packages can be tailor made to suit your needs. Pear Penguins! Each little chef will need: - 2 mini dark chocolate chips - 2 white chocolate chips - 1 Pear (fairly large) - 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips (melted) - 1 baby carrot, cut into a small thin triangle - 1 fig, cut in half diagonally - A pastry brush

37  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

How to Make Your Penguin:

1. Even though penguins can’t fly, they still need their wings. Use a butter knife (with an adults help) to carefully cut a slice into both sides of the pear to form wings. Make sure you keep the tops of the slices attached to the pear so they don’t fall off!

2.

Now use a peeler to shave off a small oval of pear skin in between the wings. This will be the penguins white tummy.

3. Now the penguin will need some eyes - otherwise how will it see you? Press the mini chocolate chips into the middle of the white chocolate chips to make little eyes.

4.

Use the pastry brush to paint the chocolate on the penguins body to make it’s dark feathers. Make sure you cover everywhere but it’s tummy.

5. Use a toothpick to clear some space in the chocolate for the eyes and carrot nose, and then push them on. Balance the pear penguin on a plate and give him the fig halves for feet.

Riddle Me This Answers: 1: What do cold geese suffer from? Goosebumps! 2: What bird likes to eat sawdust? Woodpeckers! 3: What type of music are balloons scared of? Pop Music! 4: What do you call a sleeping dinosaur? Dinosnaur! 5: Knock knock... Who’s there? Nobel... Nobel who? No bell, that’s why I knocked!

Arts and Crafts - Mosaic Flower Pots Get creative with this fun and unique craft that will jazz up your old flowerpots into something new and beautiful for your house. Total time: 1 hour Age: All Ages

39  The Yateley Magazine | May 2014

Warning - make sure you don’t do this on your own- have a parent or adult with you! You’ll need: - A Newspaper - Some decorations. Pieces of broken pottery, tiles, beads, marbles, wcharms, shells are great for this - Ceramic tile grout (you can get this in most DIY shops) - A plastic knife - A terra-cotta flowerpot - A cloth Before you start to decorate, make sure your parent or adult has sorted through the pottery and made sure there aren’t any sharp edges. How to Make It 1. Cover a table with the newspaper so you don’t make too much of a mess. 2. Spread a thick layer of tile grout onto the flowerpot with the knife. Make sure you get into all the gaps! Then just press your decorations into the wet grout. 3. When you’re finished, spread a little bit more grout between the pieces so that the edges are all stuck down. 4. Leave the pot to dry for a few hours. 5. Once your pot is dry, wipe off any grout, dust and film with a damp cloth.
