CLASS NOTES

Dear Woods Community, I hope this edition of The Woods Academy News finds you well. To say this has “been a year” is an understatement. Our world was turned upside down by the pandemic. I hope and pray that all of our families are safe and emerging from the pandemic with a spirit of joy and gratitude for what all our healthcare workers have done to keep us safe. Personally speaking, I have never been more grateful to be part of this great Woods community. It was our community of teachers, students, and parents that rallied to make this past year work. A herculean task by our teachers was met with support from our parents and joy by our students.

It is strange to think how a community can come together when we are required to be physically distant. As I reflected throughout the year, it began to hit me that while distant we were becoming closer. For me, I was lucky. I was able to connect with all of our students and families at morning and afternoon carpool. What initially felt like the dreaded job of

taking temperatures and performing health checks quickly turned into an opportunity to connect with our people and build community. Short conversations and interactions dayafter-day lead to relationships. Our teachers did it through a camera and in-person so well. Getting to know our kids, even with masks and distanced, was what set us apart during this time. It has always been what sets us apart. At The Woods, it is personal.

We learned that a pandemic cannot stop us from learning. It cannot stop us from growing. It cannot stop us from building relationships. Getting back to doing this in a more regular way is what we all want, but when faced with a challenge, this community rose to the occasion. The evidence was in the joy our kids expressed each day. Whether it was getting out of the car, being in class with their peers, or some one-on-one time with a teacher, our kids’ smiles came through the masks. Our teachers created that environment. One that set the expectation of learning, but

did so with a spirit of joy that no matter how we are connecting we are going to make this work.

As we move through a summer with the pandemic still present, I hope and pray you all have time to reflect and appreciate the silver linings that have come from this time of isolation and turmoil. It has no doubt produced some dark days, but if you take some time and look hard enough, you will find the light. There were plenty of hard days for me, but I found that light in our community. It was right in front of me. I just had to open my eyes more fully. Peace,

Joseph Powers Head of School

CLASS OF 2020 Advice for Starting High School During a Pandemic

Many 8th grade students across the country successfully completed the high school application process, graduated from their respective middle schools, and slowly turned their focus to a new school year in a new school during a pandemic. We spoke with members of The Woods Academy Class of 2020 (pictured above) who started high school this past fall amid the disorder of the pandemic.

Their guidance and thoughts cover a range of topics from meeting new friends to time management to the biggest challenges they faced in their new learning environments. Their words of wisdom may come in handy for our newly graduated 8th graders and/or current students!

Meeting New Friends

4

Remember that every one of your classmates will be in the same position as you – nervous about meeting people and making connections. Reach out to your classmates via social media or your school email when you recognize that you have something in common. Participate in the orientations and other beginning of the school year activities that your high school has planned. Given the circumstances of the pandemic,

the various high schools went above and beyond planning opportunities for the new first-year students to get to know the school and the community.

Connecting with Teachers

In most cases, your new high school will be much larger than your previous middle school. It will be more challenging to connect with teachers because you will not see them as often, especially if you begin the school year with some form of virtual learning. Be sure to participate in class. That is the best way for your teachers to get to know you. Also, take advantage of office hours or chances to stay after class to talk with your teachers one-on-one. Introduce yourself to your teachers via email, if necessary.

Time Management

Most everyone assumes that high school will be a step up from middle school. The schedule, the workload, the teacher expectations will all increase. The best way to manage all of this is to fill up your schedule. Get involved in the community and fill your time with meaningful activities. Use a planner to schedule your days and weeks. Take advantage of short breaks you may have during the school day, between classes, or after school before extracurricular activities. Most importantly, put your phone away when you are doing homework or studying.

Getting Involved

As mentioned, filling your schedule with meaningful activities is the best way to manage your time. Joining clubs is a great way to connect with students that have passions and interests similar to yours, meet new friends especially upper-class students, and get to know other faculty members. Many clubs are meeting virtually even though students are attending classes in person which makes participation even easier. Sports are another great way to connect with students and faculty members in your new high school. Even during the pandemic, high schools are offering modified sports seasons as well as other extracurricular activities that focus on health and wellness.

‘Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy’

As long as you stay positive, the easiest thing about starting high school during a pandemic will be the transition to your new community. The students, faculty, and administration will be welcoming and understanding making sure you have what you need to be successful. Remember, you are in the same boat as all of your classmates.

‘Stressed Depressed Lemon Zest’

Heads up! The workload in high school is intense. Do not be shocked. Be prepared. That is where the time management tips come into play. You may also find that the various class schedules and teacher expectations are quite different from middle school. Knowing and expecting this can make all the difference when the school year starts.

DANIEL GAUL GEORGETOWN PREP

The Big Picture

Regardless of the current health crisis, it is important to look at high school long-term, a four-year adventure. While many will start their high school career with COVID-19 still in the headlines, realize that there will be time at your new school that is not overshadowed by the pandemic. Think of all the possibilities that await you in high school. Do not be afraid to try new things and step outside your comfort zone. Know that you have been well-prepared by the teachers and your experiences at The Woods Academy.

This advice was originally shared via “Starting High School During a Pandemic,” a webinar hosted by The Woods Academy on December 9, 2020 for our Grade 8 families.

Special thanks to Head of School Joe Powers, High School Placement Coordinator JP Clubbs, and our student panelists from the Class of 2020 for participating in the event.

“Remember, you are in the same boat as all of your classmates.”

LESSONS FOR A LIFE

Lessons for a Life BY SHARON PABON  MUSIC TEACHER

I would like to shine the spotlight on the Class of 2021 instrumentalists who have performed at our concerts throughout their time here at The Woods Academy. Ananeah Nevil, Gabriela Pabon, Hannah Gormley, Izzy Fandl, and Luka Radovic have played in dozens of performances and brought beauty and joy to our community. Students, thank you for sharing the gift of music!

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM OUR 8TH GRADE MUSICIANS

Our fabulous instrumentalists have one last gift to share with you – life lessons they have learned from their music lessons. The summer is a great time to start – or continue – instrument lessons. When you learn an instrument, you learn much more than how to read notes on the page or proper position and technique. Are you thinking about signing your child up for instrument lessons? Our 8th graders have a few words to share with you. What instrument should you play? Love the way one looks, sounds, feels? Play that one. (Piano is always a great way to start too.)

Ananeah When I was younger, I would always hear the flute playing in the background of some of my favorite songs. I thought its sound was beautiful and to me, it sounded like a couple of birds chirping. This was when I was six and I was actually told that I was too young to play (apparently my arms were too small). However, a few years later, I was able to start practicing and I have loved it ever since. I love the thrill of learning new pieces and discovering new techniques involving breath support and tone, which is a big part of the reason I still enjoy playing flute today. 12

THE WOODS ACADEMY NEWS SUMMER 2021

Music evokes creativity and I often find that it is a great stress reliever. After playing an instrument for around seven years, I would definitely agree that I have developed an appreciation for music and the arts. While practicing, you may get monotonous, keep at it. It is one of the many enjoyable things in my life and while it may just be considered a pastime to some, playing an instrument is still a phenomenal skill to have.

Luka I didn’t really choose my instrument, it chose me. My godfather, who’s from Madrid, also plays the guitar. One day he came over for a family reunion and I remember seeing a guitar case in the kitchen. I asked whose it was. By the look on his face, it was clear I wasn’t supposed to know yet. He said it was for me, and as soon as I took it out of the case I started to try to practice on my own. I signed up for classes, and it’s been going on for 6 and a half years now. I still practice every Saturday through Zoom, and I never plan to stop playing. I grew out of the old guitar, but its legacy still lives on. My little brother saw me playing and he wanted to sign up too. He’s been using the original guitar ever since. It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, and I still find joy in playing to this day.

Izzy I chose to play the piano because once you learn it, learning other instruments is a lot easier. I have continued to play the piano for seven years and it was a great decision. I strongly recommend to anyone who is thinking about taking up an instrument to take it up, it will change your life. Playing the piano allows me an escape at times when my life is too stressful. It has also helped me gain confidence and learn about the importance of hard work and dedication. I am extremely grateful for the skills I have acquired through playing. Because of playing the piano, I have made many connections I wouldn’t have made otherwise. It has also shown me the importance of paying attention to details and simple playing mechanics when doing difficult pieces. These tips have come in handy

frequently but especially when I am on the basketball court working on my shot.

Play an instrument. It changes your life and while it is not always fun, it will improve so many facets of your life. During the times that you feel like you just can’t learn a certain song, or you just can’t hit a certain note, just try one more time. Push yourself a little harder, don’t quit. You will never regret it.

Hannah Playing an instrument has many benefits, both mentally and in other aspects of your life. Playing the piano has helped me to have a growth mindset and it has taught me to persevere through hardship and frustration. Daily practice instills discipline and recitals help you to overcome stage fright. Playing the piano has been a wonderful way to express myself and to develop my character.

To all the current and prospective instrumentalists, I want to encourage you to continue practicing. When I was younger, only after much coaxing from my parents, would I begrudgingly practice. I would get frustrated easily and I considered practicing a chore. I now realize the significance and the benefits of practicing an instrument daily and I’m glad I never gave up. While daily practice isn’t always easy to keep up with, it certainly pays off. Just practicing for 30 minutes a day can completely change your life. My advice to you is to always practice with a smile on your face and to never quit. Commit yourself to your instrument and I promise you’ll be happy with the results.

Gabriela Remember, you don’t have to be the best at your instrument. You don’t have to love music more than all your other hobbies. Sometimes practicing will feel like a chore. That’s okay. If you work hard, don’t give up, and put in consistent effort, I promise it will pay off. You’ll develop the deep love that can only come with time. And when you need a way to express yourself, your instrument will always be waiting.

Head of School Joe Powers Celebrates 10 Years at The Woods On Friday, May 28, The Woods Academy community gathered virtually for a prayer service to recognize Head of School Joe Powers and his 10 years of leadership. Mr. Powers came to The Woods in 2011 after serving as Headmaster at Washington Jesuit Academy. Mr. Powers has been a strong and patient leader of the approximately 65 faculty and staff members and 300 students at the school. During his tenure, he has been known to throw a football around at recess, shake hands (pre-pandemic) or take temperatures (during the pandemic) at morning carpool, read books to the Montessori preschool and kindergarten students, teach principles of investment and entrepreneurship to fifth graders, make chicken pot pies with Woods families on MLK Jr. Day of Service, and even pick up a brush to paint a still life. Most importantly, Mr. Powers serves as a strong voice and advocate for The Woods Academy, promoting our mission and Catholic identity.

In honor of Mr. Powers’ 10th Anniversary, the Eighth Grade Leadership Network organized a can food drive to benefit Nourish Now, an organization that provides food to a diverse population of people in need and relies upon the generosity of donors. A strong call to service is one of the ways that The Woods, an inclusive Catholic community, prepares boys and girls to lead lives of significance.

A Fond Farewell

Don “Coach” Clubbs Retires after 24 Years of Service In addition to celebrating these outstanding faculty and staff members, we also wish the legendary Mr. Don “Coach” Clubbs a very happy retirement. Coach joined The Woods community in 1997 as a physical education teacher and coach of various after school sports teams. He later became Facilities Director, all along wearing many hats at the school. For the last 24 years, Coach has taken care of The Woods community during morning and afternoon carpool, at lunch, and on the playing fields and courts. He has also led a tremendous maintenance staff that cares for the school building as if it is their home. While we wish him a fond farewell, for now, we hope he will return to play Santa in our annual Christmas concert because no one can elicit such screams of joy from our students quite like Coach in a red and white Santa suit.

Thank you to all of the members of our community, past and present, who helped us honor Coach Clubbs in this special video montage: www.tribute.com/don-coach-clubbs We are honored to celebrate such an outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff. They truly are the heart and soul of The Woods Academy.

THE WOODS ACADEMY NEWS SUMMER 2021

Flower Planting around Campus WOW! On Friday, April 23, WAPTO and many parent and students volunteers came to campus to plant flowers. We received over 100 flower donations! It was truly a joy to see our community come together to beautify the front of the school. We loved seeing families from Montessori, Lower, and Upper School chatting and reconnecting, and we especially enjoyed meeting new Woods students and parents, too! Thank you to all those who planted and donated flowers. Photos by Martin B (7)

Teacher Appreciation Week Staff and Teacher Appreciation Week 2021 (May 3–7) was quite the adventure. Thank you to WAPTO and the best parent volunteers in the world for all of the treats for our hardworking, dedicated faculty.
