y any measure 2015 was an annus horribilis for the AFL. We had the ongoing Essendon drugs saga, the Adam Goodes booing disgrace and Chris Judd’s career-ending knee injury. Then came news that the charismatic goal-kicking machine we know as “Buddy” Franklin was taking a break from footy to deal with mental health issues. If any good has come out of all this, it’s that it has got the community talking about things such as racism and mental illness. Buddy is to be admired for putting up his hand to ask for help. In doing so, he has not only taken care of himself, but has also no doubt made it easier for others struggling with mental health issues to seek help. It’s great to see the Swans’ star fighting fit and back on the footy field in 2016, as well as looking sharp as the face of menswear label Politix. And it’s heart-warming to read this week’s cover story about his efforts to stay physically and mentally healthy, and his hopes for a better year ahead. ●

AFL ROUND 1, 2016 \ SYDNEY V COLLINGWOOD

FL superstar Lance “Buddy” Franklin is back, not just doing what he does best – playing football – but also back in the spotlight as a fashion model, looking fit and chic for Aussie menswear label Politix. This is the third season Buddy has worked with the brand, and the new autumn/winter campaign marks his return to the public gaze after he walked away from football just before last year’s AFL finals series in order to seek help for mental health issues and a mild form of epilepsy. Today he seems in good form. He has just finished shooting the new-season campaign for Politix the previous day and is enjoying being back training and playing with the Swans. He won’t go into detail about the mental health issues that sidelined him last September, but he’s happy to talk about getting healthy, training with his team and his home-body lifestyle – a far cry from his party-boy image that invited the wrong kind of media attention in the mid-2000s. When we chat it’s just a week before the AFL 2016 season kicks off and he’s eager to talk about taking on Collingwood at the SCG in Round 1 on Easter Saturday. (Buddy would kick four goals in the match, helping the Swans to an 80 point victory.) At 29, he says he’s mentally fit and ready to play the game that stole his heart as a young man in rural Western Australia. “I am ready for the season ahead, would love to win a

out when I can,” he says. “My football training and diet have been the main focus over the past five months and she’s really into healthy eating, so it works for both of us.” Lance “Buddy” Franklin was born in Perth and grew up on a family farm in Western Australia’s wheat-belt town of Dowerin, 160 kilometres from the capital. He spent his formative years kicking the footy on the farm against a tin shed before he was offered a sports scholarship to Wesley College in Perth at the age of 15. He played just one senior game for the Perth Football Club in 2004 before he was recruited by Hawthorn as a 17-year-old in 2005 and moved to Melbourne. Over the next nine years he emerged as one of the giants of the game, a seemingly indestructible forward and linchpin of the Hawks’ winning streak, kicking more than 500 goals (only

that. I think, looking back on it, yes, it has hindered his recovery and his well-being, and my well-being too, and it’s just really sad that we weren’t given the respect that was needed for it.” These days the couple are firmly ensconced in Sydney, in their Rose Bay mansion, but Buddy returns to Melbourne frequently to see family and friends. “I was down a few weekends ago, I love it,” he says. He describes himself as a Melbourne laneways and restaurant guy more than beach-goer, but the big attraction here is family. When he first moved to Melbourne 11 years ago, his family [father Lance snr and mother Ursula] came with him and they still live here. He has four sisters – the eldest is Bianca Giteau, a professional netballer. Over the summer and AFL pre-season there was talk that Buddy might not return to

When it comes to modelling, he admits having a model fiance helps – but he won’t say whether she has offered him any camera tips. “I’ve put myself out there again and I love being involved with a fashion brand like Politix,” he says. “I have another term with them and we’ll see where it goes but they’re a great company and our working relationship comes from a mutual place of respect.” Buddy first appeared in a Politix campaign in 2014, alongside soccer star Harry Kewell. This latest shoot took six hours, with as many outfit changes to perfect the label’s images for the season. “I really had to try and get that Blue Steel face on, which wasn’t easy,” he says with a laugh. At 197centimetres tall, he cuts a striking figure regardless of what he’s wearing but he says nothing makes him feel more confident than wearing a beautifully tailored suit.

premiership but that’s a way off – I really think the best is yet to come,” he says. Re-emerging as a fashion poster boy for Politix has helped the AFL’s highest-paid, and arguably highest-profile, player ease his way back into public life. “Doing this campaign has been fun and it’s gotten me away from football for a minute. But footy and Jess are my number ones,” he says. Jess, of course, is his fiance, former Miss Universe (Australia) and now David Jones ambassador Jesinta Campbell. After the media maelstrom that followed his shock decision to step away from footy last September, it was Jess who bore the brunt of media questions before the couple managed to escape overseas for a five-week break together. “It was nice to get away with Jesinta and get some sunshine,” he says. He has also recently started to engage with social media again, posting photos of himself and Jesinta together. He says he loves nothing more than spending time with her in the kitchen. “Jess loves cooking and I try to help

the second indigenous player to reach that career milestone). When the Swans lured him to Sydney after the 2013 season – with an unprecedented $10million nine-year contract – the deal caused shockwaves at Hawthorn and in Sydney. By that time he had also gone public with his relationship with Jesinta, after the pair appeared together in the Emirates marquee at the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival. They quickly became one of Sydney’s most glamorous and most photographed couples, our own Posh and Becks, hounded by the paparazzi from the beach to the Brownlows. When Buddy crashed Jesinta’s Jeep into four parked cars in Rose Bay in April 2014, the tabloids went crazy. The following year, when he revealed his struggles with mental health issues, Jesinta indicated that the intense media scrutiny on the couple had been a contributing factor, telling one reporter: “This is something that has required a lot of privacy and, unfortunately, we haven’t really been granted

football. But he says quitting was never on the cards. “I have plenty of goals I want to tick off this year,” he says. “The most exciting things are yet to come. I am just focused on one game at a time and being the best I can be.”

F

or now his main focus is on keeping healthy – mentally and physically. He trains with the Swans five days a week and meets with the team every day. “I’m keeping focused and it’s really been one day at a time,” he says. “I’ve been eating well, feeling well and being with those I love.” Crucially, he has shed the party-boy image of yesteryear for a quieter life. “I do a lot of bike riding and weights at the gym. It’s really important for me to focus on this as it’s been key in strengthening me mentally as well.” He watches what he eats – mostly fish, meat, salad or vegetables. “Diet is very important to me. I have to work out what works and what’s right. I tend to stick with lighter meals and while I love my carbohydrates and pasta, I don’t overdo them,” he says.

“I am bigger than the average bloke so I make sure the fit works for my body shape and I definitely have to feel comfortable in what I am wearing.” His guard goes up when I ask what advice he would offer to others struggling with mental health issues. But there’s a sense he’s also keenly aware of the expectations on him, as a public figure, to address what is too often a taboo subject. “I think for me it’s about keeping positive and having people there you are able to talk to,” he says. “The last six months I wasn’t really able to talk to people because I found it really tough, but it’s about having a great support network around you and letting people know about your circumstances and what you need to get through it. “At this point I am just trying to keep myself on track and to remain in a good place. Maybe down the track I will be able to talk about it but for now I would prefer to focus on football.” ● jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au APRIL 6, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 11

I like to keep sparkling wine in the Q fridge so I always have some ready to drink. Does this damage the wine?

W H AT T O D R I N K W I T H B E N T H O M A S

Believe it or not, keeping sparkling A wines in the fridge for even a few days can have an effect.

Madame Coco Blanc de Blanc Brut 2014 (France) $20; 11.5%

Dominique Portet Brut Rose LD NV (Yarra Valley) $28; 13%

Jacquesson cuvee 739 extra brut NV (Champagne) $113; 12%

We opened this with friends after a bottle of well-known champagne and it more than held its own. One guest exclaimed she couldn’t believe it was so cheap. Chardonnay’s best attributes are on show: white peach, lemon zest and a line of grapefruit acid. A brioche note adds complexity, as does a fine mousse and a lengthy finish. ●

LD stands for low dosage – so a small amount of sweet liqueur is added to the bottle when it’s disgorged. This is fresh, dry and delicious. There’s more to the wine: a bright mix of summer berries, brioche and citrus on the nose, while on the creamy palate there’s grip, zip and refreshment, plus more summer berry and citrus flavours. ●

This particular bottle was fresh off the boat, disgorged in August 2015 and mostly made from the 2011 vintage. It’s a 57/21/22 blend of chardonnay and the pinots – noir and meunier – with bright, layered aromas: stonefruits, lemon, citrus, nutty and a little yeasty. Bright and tart, it’s zesty in the mouth. ●

Enjoy with \ Crab tarts

Enjoy with \ Tuna sashimi

The cork shrinks ever so slightly and lets a small amount of bubbles out. But unless you drink the same champagne every day (I want your life if you’re lucky enough to be that person), you’re not likely to notice any difference if you’ve had a bottle in the fridge for a week or two. I don’t reckon I could. A month or two would be a different story. But in the fridge or out, best lay the bottle on its side to keep the cork moist. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Post-greetings, friendly ninjas deliver your personalised coal pit and energetic waitstaff patiently guide you through the menu; there’s nothing left to do but watch, drool and try not to fill up on the aforementioned bowls of kimchi. With grilling, flipping, cutting and serving done for you at the table, Korean barbecue is as close as you’re going to get to smell-o-vision; eliciting the same trance-like state as watching your favourite cooking show … except that you get to eat it at the end. Go for the kimchi pancake to start. It’s feather-light, with a delightful crunch, plus it’ll keep your fingers busy lest you pull the trigger on the grill too soon. Prawns and scallops are luscious, as is the special galbi: premium beef short rib, traditionally marinated and snipped into mouthfuls off the bone. If any wagyu tender strip is left, grab it. THE JUNGLE BOOK There’s much to love in this live action remake of the Disney classic. FILM Director Jon Favreau reimagines the timeless cartoon as a breakneck action thriller, voiced by the cream of Hollywood. Idris Elba is a terrifying tiger and Bill Murray is predictably perfect casting as Baloo. There are snatches of familiar songs and a few good laughs, but it’s hard to pick the audience. Adults will marvel at the realistic CG creatures, but young kids will likely find them too creepy to love. ■ Opens April 7, rated CTC, 96 minutes, movies.disney.com.au/the-jungle-book-2016

The Bridge, Series 1, 2 and 3 Madman DVD madman.com.au

Remade by the Brits and the Americans, this seminal Scandi-noir has never been bettered. Awash with the baroque horror and social commentary that defines the genre, The Bridge manages to be at once subtle and blockbuster-style thrilling. With irresistible cliffhangers, it’s ideal box-set viewing. The great success is the pairing of Swedish police detective Saga and her Danish partner Martin, both of whom transcend stereotypes. ● ONLINE \ Watch the trailer

Still best known for their fatally catchy Dumb Ways To Die campaign, Melbourne group Tinpan Orange earn the right to be taken very seriously with this, their fifth, album. From the opening moments of Rich Man (part Portishead, part Bond theme), it’s clear the group have found the mood, and milieu, that best befits their knack for razor-sharp melody. There’s a sweeping, smoky, late-night vibe at work on tracks such as Light Across The Water that is utterly beguiling. ● ONLINE \ Watch the Rich Man video

I love a good seafaring tale. Based on the real-life events that inspired literary classic Moby Dick, Ron Howard’s salty drama sees a crew of whale-hunters wrecked by their quarry. Forced to sail hundreds of kilometres in tiny boats, the men find themselves pursued by the whale they failed to kill. A tale of survival against the odds, the film isn’t as action-packed as might be expected, but a fine cast give it their all. ● MB

It’s hardly a bold observation to note that pretty much every crime story ever written begins with the discovery of a dead woman (usually found floating in a lake or river). Sydney writer Emily Maguire doesn’t attempt to buck that trend but keeps her eye on the sort of stories we like to tell (or hear told) about dead pretty girls. The result is a whodunnit more interested in the why – a psychological crime thriller told in unusually poetic prose. ●

Advertising graduate and Chapel Street local Azahn Munas never intended to have a career in fashion. He credits his new label MOGA, to an unexpected opportunity that presentd itself. “A lot of my friends wanted to experiment with fashion and wear the headscarf but they couldn’t find anything that was bold and daring to suit their personalities,” Azahn says. “They wanted something that was very bright, bold and colourful so I just thought why not?” MOGA’s stunning collection of silk headscarves and shawls appeals to both Muslim and non-Muslim women and is inspired by Melbourne’s iconic street art. The brand doubles as a social enterprise aimed at helping girls go to school in countries where education opportunities aren’t equal. Where do you go for a great cup of coffee? Journeyman. It’s a great location on Chapel Street with great staff and good vibes. For a nice meal? I would say Saigon Sally. I love Vietnamese fusion; I can’t get enough of it.

For Friday night drinks? The Carlton Club is pretty cool. It’s a really good place for uni students to get together and it has good atmosphere. For a new outfit? If I was looking for an outfit I would just go up and down Chapel Street. For a work out? I go to Kaya Health Club. They make it an oasis, kind of private, and the staff who work there are amazing. It’s very tranquil and a nice place to be. For some takeaway? Misschu. It’s a Vietnamese take out that’s quick, incredibly efficient, great quality food and very light, fresh and healthy. To relax? I actually go for a run to relax, I find it very therapeutic. I just run around the dog park near my house. ● SIOBHAN CALAFIORE » moga-fashion.com » More on MOGA at theweeklyreview.com.

20 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 6, 2016

The reality I can hardly contain my excitement when my boxes of meals arrive – I love getting deliveries. All of the meals are fresh – not frozen – and I sort them into breakfasts, lunches and dinners as I put them into the fridge. The meals come with a menu, which tells you what to eat first and on what day, ensuring that you’re eating the food at its optimum freshness, and that your daily calorie intake is 1500 per day. We start day one with a charred corn and pea fritter with jalapeno and tomato salsa for breakfast, a chicken, herb and salad greens sandwich for lunch and grilled fish with spiced green lentil and vegetable ragu for dinner. My husband digs into his serve of the grilled fish and lentils and says, “Wow, this is super yum”. I tend to agree and, as the week goes on, we’re continually surprised and delighted by just how tasty each of the meals are.

The pay-off The convenience of having meals ready when you need them is a godsend – especially lunches, which are a pain to sort out when you’re busy. We both reckon we feel a bit healthier at the end of the week, too. The pain factor My oven might be a bit sad that I’m not using it. It’s ok though, I had a chat with it and now it’s fine. Who should do it? All the time-poor, grabbing take-away, toasted-sandwich-for-dinner types. The bill $190 per person for five days on the 1500 calorie menu. There are options for just dinners, a 1200 and 1800 calorie menu, and you can opt out at any time.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

And not have to think about or cook dinner? That would be a yes! ● Chef Good 9553 1156 chefgood.com.au

Lance opened the store in March, after finding that many of the designer brands he saw on his travels abroad were not available at home. “I love to travel, so I go overseas a couple of times a year and I see all these beautiful things that you can’t get in Australia,” Lance says. His background in interior design is evident when walking into the immaculate and perfectly styled store. “I’ve always worked for other people, so this is my first venture on my own – I really wanted to open a beautiful store; it’s been a dream for quite a few years.” What’s in store? Luxury furniture, homewares and sculptures from international and local brands including Arteriors, Greg Natale, Aerin Lauder, Kelly Hoppen and L’Objet. “We also have the fragrances and room diffusers; they’re from Florence – they’re really beautiful. So we have a bit of everything,” Lance says. The store also offers custom pieces as well as an interior design service.

t first the brickies thought she had it wrong when Samantha Lane asked them to remove the perfectly good veneer from her Fitzroy terrace. But as the distressed brick of the cottage’s humble working-class origins was revealed they got it: in truth there is beauty. The award-winning Channel 7 football journalist and The The Age Age sportswriter often sits framed in the front window of the home she moved into almost three years ago, writing, reading, interviewing. “Apart from having the veneer removed, the biggest thing I did was build a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf in the front room, which is my study. I find it a clear, productive space. “I really enjoy opening the window and connecting to the street that way. I have two little neighbours, LJ and Millie, who leave me random things on my doorstep, just because. They are divine. It feels like a neighbourhood.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

BOOKS I spend an insane amount of time reading about Aussie Rules, Olympic sport and cycling. But I’m partial to the classics and love Shakespeare, which I studied at uni and played Miranda in The Tempest at school. My copy is annotated [for action]: “Go back to crying!”

PHOTOS I have a whole lot of photos that are very special and precious including this one of my beautiful mum Jane. She passed away when I was 10. Her spirit truly is in me, in the world and lives on in a lot of things around this house; special objects that keep her alive for me.

TEAPOTS N O R M A N L I N D S AY P R I N T This comes from the old Lane family home in Tasmania, where my dad grew up. Sadly the family sold it but we came away with some special things. I think this limited-edition print of Norman Lindsay’s Benevolence is Benevolence is beautiful as well as being a Benevolence pretty powerful female image.

If teapots could talk they would have some big stories. I have shared a lot of tea and a lot of secrets over these. My favourite is a vintage piece that a very good girlfriend bought for me. I dropped it and cracked the lid, but glued it back together.

SWIM GEAR Water is my element. I swim most days and I love the sea as much as the pool, so my wetsuit makes a cold Victorian ocean feel a bit better. I also wore it in the middle of the MCG at the Big Freeze for MND (Motor Neurone Disease). APRIL 6, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 23

hen it comes to paint colours, Melburnians like to hedge their bets with safe neutrals, touting them as easy blank canvases. But colour is essential to heighten the mood and sense of a space. Haymes’ Experience palette is bright and vibrant, reflecting the way we push boundaries. ● mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au

WENDY RENNIE, colour and concept manager at Haymes, tells us how best to use brights: to the intensity of a room. It can feel like the colour is almost enveloping you, adding to the sense of drama.

IMPACT \ Accessories that encapsulate the feel you want in a room can add to the impact of the design; for example, accessories that are bright and playful can create a fun space. TEXTURE \ Rugs can bring colour and texture to create a finished look to a room by adding warmth, vibrancy or scale. BALANCE \ Attention to detail, such as pieces of furniture,

is a key to adding colour and function to a space. Bring more interest into the room and enhance the use of colour by repeating it through pieces of furniture.

alwyn has long attracted families keen to spread their wings on its large blocks. The suburb has a quaint shopping strip, a historic cinema, lush green parks and an abundance of private and public schools. Balwyn High School always ranks among Melbourne’s highest-achieving schools. The suburb is also home to Fintona, one of Melbourne’s most famous girls’ schools. Balwyn is undergoing dramatic and rapid change, especially in the streets that run from Whitehorse Road to Gordon Street. Single-storey, three-bedroom, clinker brick houses from the 1940s are being sold and demolished. In their place, grand homes – many in French provincial style – are being built to a level of luxury previously unheard of. This double-storey French provincial-style house is an example of what is becoming the norm in these parts: a 70-square house on land of about 720 square metres, with every conceivable luxury. It has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a study, formal and informal living areas, a teenage retreat, marble and granite finishes, a swimming pool and extras such as closed-circuit TV, security and remote-controlled gates. But it’s the position that is the icing on this French cake. Less than two minutes’ walk to Whitehorse Road, the cinema, the tram and the shops, with Balwyn High School also within walking distance, Cremorne Street is fast becoming a favourite destination for families. Two more new houses are being built further down the street, confirming it as a family-friendly nesting place. Just two years old, this house is in immaculate condition. Three dormer-style windows with moulded arches cap the first-floor facade. The portico entry, reached through a manicured garden, is supported by four pillars. This house has a modern elegance and restrained luxury, from its parquetry floors to the travertine marble in all bathrooms and the sparkling kitchen. The floor plan is welcoming and the style of house practical and family friendly. A large formal living room at the front features a fireplace with grand, carved marble mantelpiece.

On the other side of the hall is the door to the garage. Nearby, a travertine-floored laundry with outdoor access is a far cry from the tiny, dark laundry often tacked on at the back of houses. A large downstairs bedroom with marble en suite, shower and walk-in wardrobe is ideal for visiting relatives or anyone who can’t go upstairs. Double glass doors at the end of the hall reveal the informal living/dining and kitchen hub. Here, the kitchen takes centre stage. Vast marble benches are packed full of Miele appliances, which include an induction cooktop, underbench oven, built-in coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher and freezer/fridge. The butler’s pantry is like a second kitchen, with a five-burner gas hob and another double sink. The island bench separates the kitchen from the meals area, with the living space at the other end of the room. Three large windows dressed in grey sheer curtains provide a view of the paved back garden, lawn and swimming pool. Back near the mid-point of the ground floor again, a timber and wrought-iron staircase sweeps up to the first floor and arrives at an open-plan lounge or teenage retreat. Opposite, a home theatre has moody chocolate and gold wallpaper, richly patterned carpet and heavy curtains. Almost half this floor is given over to a lavish main bedroom. Spacious, with soft carpet underfoot, it comes with its own retreat on one side and a full marble en suite on the other – complete with spa bath, dual vanity set in marble and frameless glass shower. The walk-in wardrobe is almost as big as the en suite. Each of the three other bedrooms has its own walk-in wardrobe. Two marble bathrooms, including an en suite, service these bedrooms. Despite its size, this house appears to be relatively low on maintenance. The ducted vacuum should make cleaning carpets easy; the laundry chute is a labour-saver; and there is next to no garden to look after. ● MARIA HARRIS property@theweeklyreview.com.au

TOORAK \ PENTHOUSE, 16 WOORIGOLEEN EEN RO ROAD This two-level penthouse was created from the top three units in one of Melbourne’s earliest apartment towers. Almost half of the upper level is devoted to living space. The long, luxurious kitchen sits between formal and informal dining areas. Its integrated Miele appliances include four ovens and two dishwashers. A butler’s pantry and laundry complete the elaborate appointments. A bedroom suite and a study are ranged along the east side of the apartment. The bedroom opens to a terrace with outdoor kitchen (also accessed from the living area), while the study has a smaller balcony. The balconies are the highlight, offering spectacular views in all directions – encompassing Melbourne and out to the foothills of the Dandenong and Macedon ranges. The lower level is reached by a spiral staircase and a lift. It contains three double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The main bedroom has a dressing room with Italian cabinetry and a sitting room – again, all with spectacular views. In creating this apartment, a high level of finishes and services was introduced. These include LED lighting, wide oak flooring and marble walls. An extensive security system vets visitors and air-conditioning provides year-round comfort. The building, on the corner of Toorak Road, is in a choice part of a choice suburb. ● NEIL CLEREHAN

Standing tall on a 526-square-metre block, this two-storey townhouse presents a natural and relaxed contemporary design that blends well into its tranquil, leafy surroundings. Inside, polished timber floors step up from the entry into a bright living area with front-facing balcony. The timber-cage staircase is the centrepiece here, zoning the kitchen and meals area without sacrificing natural light or space. Having undergone a revamp a few years back, the kitchen is bright white with Caesarstone benches and stainless-steel appliances, while the dining space has split-system air-conditioning and sliding door access to the sunny courtyard and rear yard. Tucked away nearby are a laundry, toilet and access to the double garage. All the bedrooms are upstairs and are carpeted. Large north-facing windows in the main bedroom bathe it in natural light. It has twin walk-in wardrobes and a bright en suite. The two remaining bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and are handy to a skylit bathroom. ● JULIAN HEALEY

HAWTHORN \ 4 ARDENE COURT What do a c1864 three-roomed cottage, a stately Victorian Hawthorn-brick house and a mid-century raked-ceiling bedroom with courtyard have in common? Their address. The disparate structures, enhanced by modernisation, come together with remarkable style to form a family home on a huge corner site in a cul-de-sac near Glenferrie Road. Three bedrooms on the west side, shaded by a wide verandah and gum trees, were the original cottage of a German settler who had a market garden/vineyard on the outskirts of fledgling Melbourne. Another three-room cottage was built parallel, on the east side, soon after. In 1881, the owner built his symmetrical four-room, tuckpointed Victorian along their north side and adjusted the cottages’ floor plans to form a U-shaped home. In 1962, the architect-owners restored its character and added a bedroom to the south, forming an enclosed courtyard. The vendors have painted, restored the Baltic pine boards and installed a new bathroom and Smeg kitchen. The Victorian section has the grandeur of high ceilings, bay windows and marble fireplaces in two living rooms, the kitchen and dining room. Four bedrooms share a bathroom, while cottage No. 2 comprises the new bathroom and a bedroom that leads to a retreat (with separate street entry) and a study. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON

You get a lot for your money with this double-fronted house on 520 square metres. Extensively renovated last year, it retains its old charm, including stained-glass windows (one with a floral design in the main bathroom is a highlight). Of four large bedrooms, the main has a deep walk-in wardrobe with a roomy en suite, including the widest of showers. Pale polished floorboards lead along the hall towards the vast expansion out back, where there’s a raked ceiling and a row of skylights over the stone kitchen. An island bench with overhang for stools and a 900-millimetre Smeg oven feature in the kitchen. There’s a study nook on one wall, while sliding doors reveal an even bigger space for a home office. Full-width bifold doors open to a raised deck, which steps down to a tree-lined lawn. With heating and air-conditioning, the house is ready for all seasons. There’s room on the drive for three cars. The house is a stroll from the canal, Tennyson Street strip, schools, bay and Elsternwick Park. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL
