FIRST PERSON

I am Emma Lynch … and I work high above the ground I was in marketing before becoming a ropeaccess technician. I’ve always been an active person, but I just needed a change in scenery. At this company (Vert Industries), we do lots of different things, not just window cleaning. Painting and just general building maintenance, so a lot of leak detection issues and pretty much anything people can’t reach from the ground. We’re on ropes; we rarely work off platforms. We wear a full body harness and two ropes, so you’ve got a main working line and a back-up safety line. It’s almost like an apprenticeship. You start at level one, that’s a week’s course – and then you need 1000 hours and a minimum of 12 months’ experience to progress to level two. And then there’s level three, which is the most advanced riggers. It’s pretty safe. We don’t really get “danger money”. I wish, is the short answer. Everyone would be doing it otherwise, I think. The tallest building I’ve done was 70 storeys, or about 230 metres. When you’re there up that high it’s peaceful and quiet. You get beautiful views of the bay. The toughest bit is the physicality of some jobs. Each building’s different with the way you have to approach things, in terms of reaching. Reach is probably the most physical part of what we have to do. You’ll set up for a drop but you have to try and reach as wide as you can – obviously to reduce the amount of drops you do on a building. We start at the top and abseil down. How do we get back up? People presume we would climb back up, but we don’t. We use lifts or we use gravity. You’re generally two to three hours on a drop. It gets quite uncomfortable in the chair, and physically demanding on your back and hips if you’re there for say more than three hours. Once I had this guy sprint towards the window. I was bracing myself, as I didn’t know what he wanted to do. But he was just eager to say hello. This job tends to attract people who are adventurous and easy-going. It can be mentally stressful, some parts of the job, and figuring your way around a building, so you have to be a little more laid-back. Some people look at us and think we’re crazy and they’d never do it in a million years. But we do feel lucky; it’s a pretty cool job. ●

TIRED OF THE BONE-CRUNCHING CHILL OF BITTER WINTER? TIME TO ESCAPE. PETER WILMOTH SHARES THE MOST REJUVENATING HOT SPOTS.

Spice Islands

FEEL the HEAT

Yes, they are as exotic and magical as they sound. Janet DeNeefe, the queen of Ubud who moved from Melbourne to Bali more than 30 years ago, has taken her famous hospitality skills to sea. I was lucky enough to join Janet as she hosted an extraordinary boat trip to the fabled Spice Islands, the scenes of bloody battles three centuries ago between the English and the Dutch over control of the highly lucrative market for nutmeg and other spices. If you love history and food – and you’re keen for an adventure on the open ocean – you will relish this trip. With a small group, it will take you to still extremely remote places with the knowledge of history and, of course spices, shared daily by the redoubtable DeNeefe. The area today seems as remote as it was when in 1667 the Dutch swapped the tiny nutmeg-rich Run Island for Manhattan, which the English happily accepted. The visit to Run Island – about three kilometres long and one kilometre wide – is poignant in witnessing the simple life its residents enjoy, and its fascinating place in history. The trip is immersed in history. The boat sails through the Banda Archipelago, a network of small islands once the world’s only source of nutmeg and mace. But there are also wonderful meals shared on the boat, and some in hand-picked restaurants on the islands. There is also some superb snorkeling. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a chance to visit a part of east Indonesia you otherwise may never get to see. ● Spice Islands Tour from Ambon to Banda Neira, Indonesia, with Janet DeNeefe, from November 10-18. Nihi Sumba Island This extraordinary experience is on the list of every surfer with the dream of escaping the crowds in the water (the excellent surf break is reserved for guests). On the remote Nihi Sumba Island in south-eastern Indonesia – a 50-minute flight from Bali – the various styles of villas are set right on the famous left-hand wave, known locally as “Occy’s left” after the Australian former world champion Mark Occhilupo. It’s a piece of coast with a reputation as one of the best left-hand breaks in the world. But the wave has been described as “double overhead on an average day”, so it’s not for beginners,

Bali To the more than one million Australians who visit Bali each year, there’s some news – there’s a new kid in town. It’s Malaysian full-service carrier Malindo Air, and I experienced the first flight on the new MelbourneDenpasar route on June 8. Malindo Air has taken up the route vacated last year by Tigerair, and will offer strong competition to Jetstar. We landed happily in Denpasar to access a list of hot Bali entertainment options; some new

although a surfer friend has told me “regular” surfers can usually find a wave that’s not too challenging. Nihi Sumba is more than a luxury resort, it’s a “culturally immersive enclave” encompassing active adventure, “barefoot luxury”, superb food from their own gardens and a beach club. Activities include fishing, horse riding, yoga and wellness, a spa and kids’ activities. Some villas are close enough to the beach that you can check the surf break from your bed. The “Kasambi” villa is the one you might consider – it overlooks the wave and is regarded as the surfer’s “villa dream”. ● Nihi Sumba ● nihi.com

and some older favourites. Try Bikini restaurant, the next venture of Melbourne-born restaurateur Adam McAsey, who opened the everreliable Sisterfields cafe (next door) in 2014. The two share a courtyard dining space. Another ex-Melburnian Maurice Terzini has Da Maria (pictured), a fun and funky modern Italian, part-osteria, part-pizzeria, part-bar, that features a DJ each night after 10.30. Da Maria is a collaboration with Sydneysider Adrian Reed, who has the party-time diner Motel Mexicola.

Finally, I get to fill an embarrassing gap in my visits to the world’s great cities – by experiencing Hong Kong. All those endless images of stunning cityscapes towering over Victoria Harbour have to be seen for yourself. The new Murray Hotel in Central is the perfect Hong Kong kick-off spot. With its deluxe rooms and ideal location (between Garden Road and Cotton Tree Drive), the Murray has been transformed from an office building into a luxury destination. We move at a fair clip through the best of Hong Kong. Lunch at Mott 32, a contemporary Chinese restaurant in Central, is in that category, as is Ho Lee Fook, a more casual funky Chinese kitchen. Access the views of Hong Kong through rooftop bar Sevva (10 Chater Road). Take a trip on one of the last remaining traditional Chinese junks and watch A Symphony of Lights, the multimedia show that dazzles the harbour every night. We are taken on a tour of Sham Shui Po on the Kowloon side, one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong and now an emerging neighbourhood where modern cafes sit alongside traditional eateries and

Bali in the ’80s was a party island but has evolved into serious culinary destination, and Terzini’s new place has developed a strong following. Still abuzz is Saigon Street (in Petitenget) serving delicious casual Vietnamese and a visit to Mama San in nearby Kerobokan is imperative. ●

Icebreaker? Dealbreaker

ello there. I’m Nath Valvo – I’ve lived in Melbourne since birth and I tell jokes for a living. Saying hello to you – a stranger – isn’t something I do often. I don’t think many of us do. Question: Are Melburnians snobs? Maybe snob is too strong a word, but I can’t help but notice a huge bunch of us would hate nothing more than small talk with another human being, especially our neighbours. Tad depressing, yes? In my early 20s I lived southside. Five years in St Kilda without a word to a neighbour. I didn’t even talk to my housemates (found ’em on the internet). The three of us would communicate in a WhatsApp group –

8

T H E W E E K LY R E V I E W

often, we’d all be in our own bedrooms talking via text. Snobbery was taking place inside our own home, let alone the driveway. Then I moved northside. The hippies, arts students and nonnas are no different, it seems. A few years in an apartment block and nothing but a few classic awkward elevator ice-breakers – “Level three? Thanks” or “It’s really coming down out there” or “Cute dog.” The building was evacuated once. Even at 4am – with hundreds of us scattered across gutters in our pyjamas – not a word was said. My boyfriend Cody (he’s really hot – stop mentioning it) and I have just moved again. Still northside but

a new street and new neighbours. It’s been a month and not a single friendly word from anyone. If this were a movie, we’d have received a welcome basket from a gossipy neighbour. Sadly, we’re still waiting. Someone left a note on my windscreen last week, saying: “You park like a dickhead”. Does this count as a chat? Sitcoms have taught us that next-door neighbours should be hilarious characters – popping their head over the fence with some great zingers. In reality, you’re lucky to get a g’day on bin night. Hearing a knock on my door is so rare these days, my initial instinct would be to hide. “Why is someone knocking on the door?” “Is someone on fire?” “I haven’t ordered Uber Eats. Quick, Cody. Hide!” Maybe I’m completely wrong and your street is full of hilarious chats and cupcakes on doorsteps. But in my street no one is talking to anyone, which is fine with me. OMG, am I a snob? ● Comedian Nath Valvo is touring Australia with his new show, Show Pony Pony, and plays Sydney in August. Nath joins us with his new column every fortnight.

ENTERTAINMENT

Dream believer T

racy Grimshaw will never forget the day in 1981 she walked into the Channel 9 newsroom in Bendigo Street, Richmond, surrounded by people such as Brian Naylor, who she had always looked up to. She grew up watching “the box in corner”, and she was starting a dream job as a television reporter, in what was a male-dominated world. The name Grimshaw was on the staff roster, and many of the other journalists at the time just presumed it was a man. But there was one man who welcomed her with open arms, and she will always be grateful for it. “I knew nothing,” Grimshaw says. “I had done a fast-track cadetship in a suburban newspaper in two years, and I was ill equipped to start in the top-rating news station in the city. But Peter Hitchener walked up to me, and said ‘hello, you must be new here’, and I said ‘Yes, my name is

Tracy’ and he introduced himself and said welcome. “He had no idea who I was. He made my life, let alone my day, that day. He is as warm now as he was to me that day, that’s just who he is,” Grimshaw says. Fast forward almost 40 years and both Grimshaw and Hitchener are a force for Channel 9 Melbourne in that all-important 6-7.30pm primetime slot. Grimshaw’s A Current Affair is an underrated ratings juggernaut, rarely out of the top-10 nationally rated television shows since she started as host in 2006. She has had a long, successful career, starting as news reporter, later newsreader, to hosting Today for 10 years until 2006, first with Steve Liebmann and Karl Stefanovic for one year, and now ACA. There is one blip – in 1995 she hosted Midday with David Reyne, with no TV band and a reduced budget, after the heady days before her when Ray Martin was host. The job lasted nine months. “That wasn’t a stellar moment in my career, but it taught me to work with a live audience,” she says. Now, Grimshaw has her first, and well-overdue, TV Week gold Logie nomination. She will be up against Love Child and The Wrong Girl actress Jessica Marais, host of the now-axed Family Feud Grant Denyer, Andrew Winter of Selling Houses Australia, Amanda Keller of The Living Room and Rodger Corser of Doctor Doctor Doctor. The Logies ceremony will be held at the Gold Coast on July 1. Channel 9 campaigned hard for

EFFI COHEN

TRACY GRIMSHAW’S AFFAIR TO REMEMBER

her to be nominated. “I was absolutely gobsmacked,” she says. “I didn’t know the network was going to do that campaign for me. I have been with the one network for 37 years, and I am not exaggerating when I say it has a family feel to it. I have been offered jobs at other networks ... but Nine make it easy to stay.” A Current Affair is also up for the most outstanding news coverage or public affairs Logie for her interview with Don Burke, the night that Fairfax Media and ABC broke the story about his bullying and sexualmisconduct allegations. “I am still loving it,” she says.

““A A Current Affair still presents me with a challenge; every new interview is a challenge, and every person and story are different.” Born and bred in Melbourne, Grimshaw now calls Sydney home – where ACA is filmed. Outside work, she treasures her dogs and horses. “The horses and dogs don’t give a rat’s ass what I do all day; the expectations are pretty simple and I do like that simplicity when I come home,” she says. ● TV WEEK LOGIES \ Live voting for gold/most popular categories reopens June 29 and closes at the end of Nine’s red-carpet telecast.

I

f you’re after that ‘‘barista-knows-my-first-nameand-daily-coffee-order’’ feeling, then you need Fitzroy North, which is nestled nicely along tram route 86. In a morning of cafe-hopping I’ve seen more welcoming nods to regulars than I’ve seen people instagramming their breakfasts. Rather than for the show, locals come here for the meals, company and the newspaper, even on a Monday. The pile next to a tray of freshly baked muffins at The Bell Jar look well read, and the daily muffin special (pear and white chocolate today) looks equally enticing. I say I’m snagging one for the road, but it’s really just for the meander up Queens Parade. Had I not had coffee on my mind, one of their house-made turmeric spice blends would’ve made a nice accompanying latte. Behind the quaint Victorian buildings of Fitzroy

North/Clifton Hill, there are shops dedicated to their crafts. There’s handmade Turkish rugs at Alaturca Collections, even clothing being carefully made behind the counter at Keegan. It’s all about the small and unique touches, including knowing costumers by name; while floating in and out of stores, shoppers are greeted warmly. Fowlers Flowers, and cafe Mixed Business make for a friendly duo: buy a $25 seasonal posy followed by a coffee next door with “Tim Tammy” flavour notes. The hubbub of community here is loud and welcoming, so it’s easy to forget the wide main road running through the middle of the street. It feels like a merry slice of the old times. I order a simple latte in a punt to become a new local, and perhaps a casual read of the newspaper while I wait will seal the deal. ●

Order a Lune croissant pronto, before it sells out. Tap it gently with your knife and – hear that crack? That’s the sound of Australia’s best croissant (no joke). Pull it apart, and the lustrous, featherlight, buttery curls flake on the plate. There’s rhubarb jam and cultured butter to add if you like, or have it with ham and comte. very conceivable and extraordinary luxury has been included in this palatial contemporary house designed for large numbers of people to enjoy idyllic days and entertaining nights. On the ground floor a golf-simulator room, darts room and billiards room connect to the high-roof boat shed on one side and the wine cellar and 10-car garage on the other. Two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living and family room create a complete guest apartment, and another bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. An L-shaped gym, storerooms, workshop and laundry complete this floor. A glass elevator tower links the two levels. The first floor is a expanse of marble and opulence. Living and dining areas flow seamlessly and sparkle with chandeliers and the light from banks of floor-to-ceiling windows. A four-metre quartz island is the star of the kitchen, which has double Smeg ovens, two dishwashers, a walk-in pantry and Italian tapware. This level also has a sports bar currently furnished with a second billiards table. The bar itself is fitted with integrated fridges and equipment as professional as any commercial version. A 10-seat cinema is also a highlight. The main bedroom and its en suite are safe rooms with instant lockable doors. The bedroom is very large and has one of the home’s five gas log fireplaces. The en suite is luxurious and there is also a beautifully-fitted walk-in wardrobe. Four bedrooms, all with en suites, and a retreat and second laundry, range down the eastern side of the home. Outdoor living is equally sumptuous. The entertainment area includes a north-facing gas heated pool, 11-person Jacuzzi with swim-spa function, a pavilion with wet room and a stainless-steel kitchen with new Gasmaster barbecue. The home is on an angled, landscaped block of about 4176 square metres. Other features include seven commercial-grade heating and cooling units, commercial double-glazing, Honeywell home automation, CCTV and alarm, 10 integrated televisions, four instant hot water systems, commercial grade drainage and solar panels. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON property@domain.com.au
