VIRGINIA TRIOLI LOOKS FOR THE GOOD

round the time of the reunification of Germany, the brave and unsentimental war correspondent Martha Gellhorn wrote a piece about the several times she had been to that often troubled land: before the Second World War, after the liberation, during the Cold War. She had seen many terrible things during those times, including the liberation of concentration camps, and she had learnt unforgettable things about the nature of cruelty and the depths of sorrow. In one passage, she recounts how she saw women in liberated Berlin weeping before the shattered remains of their homes, their furniture in a heap on the street, and she found her heart hardened at the sight. We had all seen far too much horror in this war, she reflected, to feel moved by the sight of a few broken chairs. It was a tough, even cruel, thing to say. Gellhorn, after the fiery tempering of her life experience, now had a hierarchy of terror to refer to when considering loss and sorrow, and this little scene wasn’t on it.

Now I find, after years of getting up at 3am to relay stories of bombings and genocide, of mass murder, rape and abductions, of gassings and suicide bombings, I have a very different relationship to the “ordinary tragedy” of death. It seems to have broken me down a bit, and maybe even hardened me a little too, but in a different way. It seems clear to me that there are very good deaths, and very terrible ones, and that while history seems bent on making life appear so terribly, tragically cheap, any chance to die on your own terms and surrounded by love is not a death to be feared at all. This idea was made real for me recently by watching a dear friend and her family care with remarkable tenderness and devotion for her dying mother. The family kept her at home, surrounded by her children and husband. And, with support from those incredible palliative-care nurses we are so lucky to have, she slipped from this world and from the arms of those who loved her best. It won’t seem like this right now to a bereft family, but it was the best kind of death you could hope for in a world so filled with nameless, terrible destruction. It reminded me that even while death is really nothing special – it comes to us all – I still think there is such a thing as

a good death, and that if you can and if circumstances permit, it is something worth striving for. This must seem like a pathetic attempt at cold comfort for anybody going through the unexplainable grief of a private loss, but it’s not. Rather it’s my attempt at trying to re-establish meaning and significance at a time of mass death and horror that is starting to rival the Second World War that Gellhorn so unflinchingly reported. We must attribute value to all of these deaths, no matter how overwhelming and terrible they are, lest no death has any meaning at all. The “ordinary tragedy” is one we share, and if you are lucky enough that it can come to you in love and comfort then perhaps it can be that most rare thing – a bearable sorrow, and one that can be treasured. ● Virginia Trioli is co-host of ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 and ABC News 24, 6-9am weekdays

id you see The Weekly last night on the ABC?” I’ve been with Pete Evans for just a few minutes when he asks the first of several questions on my list about the blowback he and the paleo movement – of which he is the figurehead – have received. This time the mocker was The Weekly host Charlie Pickering, but there have been many others. “Well-produced,” Pete says of the show. “It was very humorous actually.” It’s good that Pete is finding something to laugh about in the face of some pretty heavy criticism around his adherence to what’s been called the “caveman” way of eating, which has caused such division and, at times, disparagement. Paleo is based on a theory that we should eat only what was available to our ancestors out of a belief we haven’t evolved to digest modern foods. It avoids grains, dairy, legumes and sugar and any processed foods. I’ve met Pete, 42, in the city for a photo shoot and a rare interview. Seeing him up close confirms the notion that he was born to be on television – the identikit presentable television chef/judge. The My Kitchen Rules camera loves those blue eyes, white teeth and the sharp features, not to mention the new trim body he’s sporting (due, of course, to living the paleo way). Today he dodges nothing on the fraught topic of the paleo food trend and his role in promoting what he says are its benefits. He even seems relieved to have the opportunity to unpack some of the attacks that have come his way in the past year. “There are organisations and people going to extraordinary lengths to I guess ridicule something that is working for tens of thousands of people in this country,” he says. “What I mean by working is people are getting healthier by adopting principles that we promote, which is paleo eating. And that makes me wonder why this is subject to so much ridicule from the media. “I don’t think it’s about me personally and I never take it personally. As much mud as they can fling, it doesn’t stick. I understand I’m just the messenger. This information is promoted by some of the world’s most renowned doctors, scientists, lecturers. It’s just that I seem to have a larger platform through my celebrity status.” Pete got into paleo four years ago when his partner, New Zealand model Nicola Robinson, suggested he read a book about it when he was convalescing with a broken ankle. “[It] gave me some time to re-evaluate some things in my life,” he says. “She said, ‘You should read this, you might like it’. I thought, ‘This makes sense. This makes more sense than anything I’ve ever read about

health and nutrition’ … I guarantee this is not a fad. This is not going anywhere.” But there has been a bruising backlash for the convert. In May, online magazine Mamamia ran a story headlined “Five reasons nutritionists and scientists hate Pete Evans”. “They’ve got their own agenda,” Pete says of the site. In March, his publisher Pan Macmillan “delayed” the release of his book on paleo for babies and infants after experts expressed concerns that it recommended feeding infants bone broth as a baby formula. One expert feared that babies could die. “It was bulls…” Pete says of that claim. He says his message gets scrambled. “We’ve always promoted that breast milk is best. Two days after this comes out you’ll see on websites, ‘Pete Evans says bone broth formula is better than breast milk’, which we’ve never said.” Pete later self-published the book. One of the regular criticisms is that, as a chef, Pete is not qualified to comment on broader health issues. “I release recipes and I’m qualified to release recipes,” he says. “If I released a recipe book that was all desserts, for instance, that was full of white flour, white sugar, processed dairy, no one would blink an eyelid. But the moment that I say I’m releasing

huge driving force for a lot of people.” But Australian Medical Association Victorian president Dr Tony Bartone is unconvinced. “It enrages me when celebrities like Peter Evans disregard and devalue medicine and can have potentially serious consequences for members of the public who follow these words,” he said last year. While many see Pete as an evangelist, a man on a mission to spread the paleo word, the man himself is not so sure. “I’ve never seen myself as that person. I’m the first one to say, ‘Never preach this way, just live by example’ … I’m not trying to shove this down anyone’s throat but I’m definitely not going to run away from the truth.” It’s the same approach, he says, he takes to educating his two young daughters Chilli and Indii. “I’m teaching my daughters to surf, how to jump into the ocean. There is an element of danger. And when I first took my daughters out to the rocks, their first instinct was to run away. I said, ‘No, no, don’t run away because that’s when you’ll fall and hurt yourself’. “I said what you need to do is stand with your feet strong, get a good firm grounding, and let the waves come. They’ll go and you won’t fall over, and as it retreats you take

“I honestly believe that this way of eating will not be seen as extreme in the coming years” a book that promotes that people get back in touch with where their food comes from … I’m considered something that’s not normal.” The controversy around him was further fuelled this year when he linked dementia and autism to an adherence to healthy eating guidelines. “Why is the rate of mental illness including dementia and Alzheimer’s escalating at a frightening rate and we are told by the DAA [Dieticians Association of Australia] to avoid saturated fat when this is what our brain needs to survive and function properly,” he wrote. Highly credentialled experts – including Professor Kerryn Phelps and dietician Dr Rosemary Stanton – have lined up against him, saying his extravagant claims for what the paleo diet can achieve are a concern. “I’ve never said anything can be cured, 100 per cent,” Pete says. “However, I can show you many real-life people who have improved their lives dramatically and, in their words, [have] been cured or healed … or, as I like to say, they’ve improved their health.” He says his critics are free to express their views. “But I can show you families where children with autism are thriving, flourishing, from adopting these principles … Fear of change and fear of potential definitely is a

a step forward. And that’s how I view my position in all of this. “I’m firmly grounded, I one thousand per cent believe in what we’re talking about, the waves are going to come and go … do I turn and retreat and make a run for it? No. Do I stand firm and tall and strong? Yeah. And then I’ll take another step forward.” Still, he believes it’s a positive that people are thinking and talking about what they eat. “I think it’s fantastic. I knew when I first came out with this three years ago there would be a little bit of backlash because it’s not the norm. At the moment it’s not the norm. But look how far we’ve come in three years since activated almonds,” he says, referring to the mockery he received for nominating activated almonds as part of his eating ritual in a magazine interview. “We are now seeing Coles and Woolworths stock grass-fed meat, hormone-free, we are trying to get correct labels on to our seafood, we are seeing organics grow even in those supermarkets … I honestly believe that this way of eating and the principles around it will not be seen as extreme in the coming years. I bet my life on it.” Is he annoyed by the mocking and the criticisms? “No, because I have a view that

everything is happening exactly as it’s meant to be happening. For years I’ve studied meditation, living in the moment, mindfulness, whatever you want to call it … spirituality. There are certain things you come to realise are out of your control. There’s no use getting upset about things because it just is. It’s how you deal with that, how you respond that is important. “Do I get upset or hurt from time to time if I hear something or see something? For sure. I’m human. I won’t say annoyed or irritated, I’d probably say hurt. That’s something I have to learn to deal with.”

ne writer suggested there seemed to be something “vitriolic” in our treatment of Pete. “There’s yin and yang, right?” he responds. “There’s light and dark. I could spend my life worrying about the negative vitriol … But I spend most of my time talking with people … that have the most amazing stories of health recovery, tears-in-youreye-type scenarios. This is on a daily basis. “The vitriol is like a fly. It’s buzzing around; go away. It’s there, but it’s not going to change the way you live your life because the good far outweighs the bad.” Pete grew up in Caulfield and Frankston before moving to the Gold Coast when he was in grade 3, after his parents separated. He spent 10 years there before returning to Melbourne to learn how to cook. He now lives with Nicola and his daughters, aged nine and 10, in Sydney and on a farm in northern NSW. “We have chickens laying eggs, we’re about to start planting our own vegetables. That’s the next adventure.” He and Nicola have been together four years. “She’s a free spirit. She lives in the moment. It’s a fantastic quality. She’s artistic and creative and very passionate about life and cooks beautiful food as well, which is great. She’s a beautiful partner.” Later we walk down Collins Street through commuter crowds and we happen across the topic of the joys of fatherhood. He is clearly besotted with his daughters; there’s a softness in his face when he talks about them. For a moment all the attacks and the mocking he’s copped melt away and he seems like a regular guy wanting his kids to grow up happy with strong values. As he wanders off into the crowd, I think about what he said when I asked him how he believed people saw him. “I don’t really care, to be perfectly honest. I know how I see myself; that I’m very happy with who I am and what I’m doing in my life.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

WATCH THIS FACE JOHN KIM \ ACTOR

What’s the buzz? Australian-born and of Korean descent, John has been named among the top 40 Asian actors under 40 to watch in Hollywood by IMDb (Internet Movie Database). In the beginning … John was basketball and footy mad and had no interest in acting until age 15, when he joined a class where he might “meet some cute girls”. He ended up meeting Gilchrist management’s Charmaine Gilchrist, who put him forward for the TV miniseries The Pacific. On the set John was stunned to find even the trees were fake and thrilled his first scene was with Joseph Mazzello, the boy in Jurassic Park. Over the next two years, while studying VCE, John played Dale “Macca” McGregor in Neighbours. The big break … Having worked two jobs to pay his way to the US for the 2014 casting season, John

He had just re-enrolled in arts at Deakin Uni and was back at Chadstone when he was asked to send an audition tape for The Librarians. “The next day I got the call saying I had the role and just dropped to my knees. Within five days of being home I got flown back,” he recalls.

Where to now … I have my first role under my belt and The Librarians got picked up for a second season, which is on air this month, so I could not ask for anything more. The best part of success … I love it when people tell me it’s their Sunday night activity to watch the show. Family is the most important thing and to know you’re part of that coming together is amazing. Especially for someone like me who grew up without that family aspect. It was just me and mum. If I could do it all again … One thing that comes to mind is I might have started acting sooner, but then I think no. The first 15 years of my life culminated in what I am as both a person and an actor. So I don’t think I would change a thing. ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au ONLINE \ AfterBuzz TV interviews John Kim

The Smallfry biodynamic pet-nat rose ($48), a blend of cinsault and grenache, is a cloudy pink and smells delightfully of strawberry and raspberry. It’s dry, creamy smooth and has a gentle fizz that doubles the refreshment factor.

teeth ache after a tasting and the sugar levels in some make you feel like you’ve spent a day at a dessert trolley. Just when I was about to swear off the stuff in the lead-up to Christmas, an interesting bubbly popped up – a petillant naturel from the Yarra Valley. Made in the Loire Valley a couple of hundred years before champagne was “discovered” by Dom Perignon, “pet-nat” is winemaking at its purest and simplest. Grapes are picked and pressed into a tank for fermentation. Just before the juice has finished fermentation, it’s bottled. The fermentation finishes in the bottle and the result is vibrant and oh-so-easy to drink. The wines are often cloudy, but don’t let that stand in the way of the enjoyment. This technique is different to methode champenoise, which is how champagne is made. It involves blending still wines together before adding sugar and yeast to re-ferment and create the bubbles in

The Bravista Latte is available in black or white.

Christiana Stergiou says she is crazy about farmers’ markets, but recognises that not everyone can get to them as often as they would like. She saw a gap in the market from the producers’ end, too, and used crowd-funding platform Pozible to help realise her goals. “I search farmers’ markets, source gourmet producers and get their products out to more people,” she says. Her business, My Farmers Market Table, is a food box supplier offering monthly and gift subscriptions. The monthly discovery box highlights a different food region and there’s also a changing selection of gift boxes. We’re giving away a Blissful Byron Bay discovery box and an I Love Olive gift box. ●

LISTEN \ FUNNY LITTLE WORLD issues. “I really feel the experience of being in an intimate space – it’s like asking someone into your bedroom – helped me overcome a lot of things that used to trouble me as a performer, that active imagination, getting self-conscious and paranoid,” she says. While Alyce has been playing guitar since she was eight, most Australians still remember her from Sons and Daughters and Sale of the Century. She says she has come to terms with that. “You are in someone’s lounge room every night, so they have this idea, ‘Oh, you’re just who we think you are’. I used to battle with that. But I understand now that the actual battle isn’t really with that perception, it’s just knowing what I’m doing.” Alyce continues to act but says, right now, it’s all about the music. “I’m excited with where I’m at musically because I feel like I’m just beginning. I’m not looking back and nostalgically revisiting my past. This is the beginning of my new career.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

‘I

honestly think I’ve only just now learnt how to sing.” This isn’t the sort of confession you expect to hear from a solo artist releasing her third album. But Alyce Platt is refreshingly candid about her transition from household name (thanks to a five-year stint co-hosting Sale of the Century) to left-of-centre musician. Her latest record, Funny Little World, isn’t the cookie-cutter pop LP you might expect from a former Neighbours star. It’s a complex, mature and sultry collection of songs influenced by 1960s French pop. The main influence is particularly surprising; Alyce says the record owes its flavour to her three-year residency at St Kilda’s Claypots restaurant. “I was really wanting to play music but wanted to base myself somewhere I wouldn’t have to worry about getting people to come,” Alyce says. Deciding Claypots would be the perfect venue, she managed to convince owner Renan Goksin to let her set up shop. “And he couldn’t get rid of me, basically,” Alyce says with a laugh. The restaurant’s jazzy stylings have certainly influenced the material on her new album. More importantly, Alyce says getting close to her audience helped her tackle some performance

THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES Retired FBI agent Ray (Chiwetel FILM Ejiofor) thinks he’s found the suspect in the cold-case murder of his ex-partner Jess’s daughter. Nobody, not even Jess (Julia Roberts) and sort-of love interest Claire (Nicole Kidman), wants to know. Adapted from an Argentinian film, this low-boil thriller jumps back and forth across 13 years, sapping any narrative drive. There are a few twists and solid performances, but TV does this sort of convoluted crime drama much better. ■ Opens November 19, rated M, 111 minutes HUGH JACKMAN Having conquered Hollywood GIG and Broadway, Hugh Jackman is having a crack at Melbourne. His Broadway Broadway to Oz concert, adapted from his smash Broadway show, showcases the full range of Hugh’s talents, featuring numbers from Les Miserables and The Boy From Oz, without forgetting his turn as grizzled mutant Wolverine. In crooning his way through a gamut of classic musical tunes, Hugh will be supported by dancers, a choir, a spectacular light show and a company of 150 musicians. ■ Rod Laver Arena, November 24-27, $91.65-$163, www.ticketek.com.au/ HughJackman

New York private eye Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) has a few secrets. For one thing, she’s a retired superhero who hung up her cape after a traumatic event (possibly) involving her (possibly dead) ex-boyfriend. Following on from Netflix’s Daredevil, this is the first female-led entry in what’s known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s no Avengers-esque, three-colour simplicity here. It’s surprisingly complex, deliciously noir and, in Krysten, has an electric lead. Ex-Doctor Who David Tennant also stars. ●

ote to everyone and special note to self: backyards are not soundproof. I know this because once, just after we moved into our house, I was hanging out the washing and my neighbour put his head over the fence and said, “Gee, you really do like a gin and tonic, don’t you?” I wanted to say, “Well yes, David, and you like a noisy midnight spa with your girlfriend”, but I didn’t because I am not like that. I’d also like to have asked him if he would please keep a check on how often he puts on his Glen Campbell album, which I suspect might be the only one he owns. We love our backyards. They are our little private fresh-air sanctuaries, which is why it is often easy to forget they are not so private. Those shared wooden fences may offer the illusion of separateness, and prevent our dogs from eating the neighbour’s chickens, but they don’t keep many secrets. Once we were out walking said dogs and a couple stopped us in the street and asked which of our canines was called Bella, and

tell us

which one was Wolfie. I’d never seen these people before, and then they announced that they lived behind us and could we stop emptying the kiddie pool on the grass because the water was running under the fence and into their vegie garden. Which makes me wonder, what else might they know about us? Did they hear us that time we had a barney over where the compost bin should go, and all the times I’ve yelled for the kids to come inside because dinner is on the table and this is not a hotel so you will need to get yourself a glass of water.

And how did they feel the night we sat around on the deck with friends, singing Rod Stewart songs because of all the champagne. I am Sailing might have sounded better to us when belted out under the stars, but I’m not sure they would agree. Poor things, being our neighbours. The dogs like to make sure any bird that comes within our boundary is well and truly ticked off. And none of the humans in this house has a good handle on volume control. But, by the same token, many a time I’ve been stretched out on a banana lounge in

the backyard and heard someone from over yonder sneeze, start up their mower, or yell at their kid. Nothing can jolt you out of a mindfulness moment more than the sound of another human you can’t see, making a human type noise a couple of metres away.

Anyway … Dave’s gone now and we have new neighbours who are magnificent because they clearly understand how to walk that fine line between friendly and helpful but not too much so. I have a key to their house in case they lock themselves out, we water each other’s gardens and chat on the way to school with the kids. While we sometimes feel the need to apologise for tantrums we may or may not have overheard from each other’s houses, never, ever have they commented on my summer evening intake of gin. These are good neighbours. ● khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

The promise A beautiful high tea in a historic building. The Gables has operated as a high-tea and wedding venue for 85 years, making it one of the longest-running venues in Melbourne. The reality Driving down Finch Street to The Gables is an experience in itself. The canopy of plane trees and glimpses of grand old mansions create an air of mystery. The Gables is a beautiful house that is a treat to view, inside and out. High ceilings, period wallpaper and original cornices and ceiling roses transport us back in time as we wander through. We’re given a quick tour of the rooms, including a grand ballroom – used for high-tea service, weddings and functions – the original drawing and dining rooms and the upstairs bedrooms, which are offered to brides and grooms to get ready on their special day. We also look into the new luxurious tea rooms, which can be booked for private functions for extra special occasions. We’re then led to our position-perfect table by the windows to enjoy the scrumptious treats that accompany our tea and champagne.

The pay-off I love heritage houses, and this one is truly spectacular. As I look at some of the old photos and plans in the drawing room, I begin to imagine the fabulous soirees that were held in the ballroom in the 1930s and 1940s. The pain factor I’m feeling a little full from all the amazing cakes and sandwiches I’ve gorged myself on by the end, but it’s totally worth it. Who should try it? Anyone with a love of history and sweet and savoury treats. The bill? $59 on Sundays and $49 on Wednesdays.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

Fancy dining surrounded by the charms of yesterday? Oh yes, I’ll do that again. ● The Gables 15 Finch Street, Malvern East. 9563 6108 » www.thegables.com.au

“It’s the charm of a lot of things, it’s the workmanship, it’s the individuality of the things too.” Jonine Versace – owner

Chapel Street Bazaar is a treasure trove of everything vintage, collectable and pre-loved. Who’s behind the counter? Owner Jonine Versace’s parents Gordon and Carol McKee co-founded the then Greville Street Bazaar in 1984, before moving to Chapel Street four years later. “It was the first of its kind in Australia – pretty much in the world that we know of – the way that we set the stalls up,” Jonine says. The store is like a year-long market, with 75 dealers who stock their own stalls and pay a commission to have the staff sell for them.

Our pick The very rare and rather unusual Onkaparinga Trousers sign will add a touch of retro cool to your wall. $135.

What’s in store? “Very specific collectables. We have specialists in cameras, watches, movie posters, vintage haberdashery, porcelain, lighting, jewellery and costume jewellery,” Jonine says. She says some items, such as laminate kitchen tables and chairs from the 1950s, are always in demand, while others come in and out of fashion.

Ground-breaker: Chapel Street Bazaar’s business model was a leader in Australia. (MI (MIC CHAEL RA RA AYNE YNER)

Who’s buying? A wide range of customers, some of whom have been coming back since the beginning. “We’re actually seeing grandchildren now coming back to this place, which is really thrilling,” Jonine says. ● JC NOVEMBER 18, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 25

THE GREAT SAFETY REVOLUTION

F

anyone who doesn’t set up their wing mirrors properly. If you do (and you use them), you don’t need it.

LANE DEPARTURE WARNING

(SUPPLIED)

ew things in motoring are changing as much as safety. It’s not just that your chances of surviving a crash are far higher in a 2015 model than an older car, it’s also that you have a much better chance of avoiding the crash in the first place. Maybe more significantly, the whole philosophy of safety is changing. New safety ideas used to be introduced in the most expensive models, taking five or 10 years to trickle down to popular models. For example the first Mercedes-Benz with anti-lock braking was the S-class of 1978. Lesser Benzes got the feature years later and ABS reached cars such as Nissan’s Pulsar in the early 1990s (but only the expensive ones). It was the same with airbags and automatic stability control until company fleets, and even some government fleets, said they wouldn’t buy cars without them. Now clever safety features are finding their way into the big sellers faster than ever in the industry’s history and it’s because buyers are insisting on them. Cars that don’t have them are harder to sell. Simple as that. So what are the latest safety features and which do you need?

MERCEDES BLIND SPOT DETECTION

BLIND SPOT WARNING

If a trailing car is in your blind spot a warning displays, often on the wing mirror itself, and if you move towards the trailing car’s path an audible warning can follow. This is handy for

Handy on long, boring stretches of road like the Hume Freeway. If you start to wander out of your lane, you’ll be warned. Some systems sound an alarm (which is a tad embarrassing when you have passengers), some put a silent but noticeable vibration through the steering wheel. It’s handy if you wander while searching in-car entertainment options or arguing with the navigation, and who hasn’t? If your indicators are blinking, the computer assumes you want to change lanes and doesn’t warn you.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS

Compulsory in some parts of Europe, these come on automatically whenever you drive.

T H I N G S YO U D I D N ’ T K N O W A B O U T M OTOR I N G The world’s first car insurance policy was sold in Westfield, Massachusetts, in 1897.

HEAD-UP DISPLAY AUTONOMOUS BRAKING

Sensors (radar or cameras) detect when you’re closing too fast on a car or an object directly ahead. They sound an alarm and, if that doesn’t wake you up, they perform a full emergency stop. At low speeds it’s enough to stop short of whatever’s in front, at higher speeds you’ll still hit it, but the damage (and any injuries) will be mitigated. A great idea but some systems are over-sensitive, even sounding a warning on approach to a sharp dip in the road. Volvo’s system detects pedestrians and cyclists, and the company is even working on a kangaroo detector.

Stop and start: Volvo’s autonomous braking system will detect if a driver is closing in too fast on people, as well as other vehicles. (SUPPLIED)

This projects selected data, such as speed, navigation instructions and cruise-control status, onto the windscreen in front of you to keep your eyes on the road. A great idea but don’t try to show it off to your passengers, they won’t be able to see it.

ME RCED ES ADAP TIV E CRUI SE CO NT RO L

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

Another one for the Hume Freeway. Set the cruise at whatever speed you prefer and it will keep you there until it detects a slower vehicle ahead. It will then slow, maybe even brake, to maintain a pre-set distance between it and you, right up until you pull out to overtake when it will bump you up to your set speed again. It makes cruising more relaxed as well as safer.

REVERSING CAMERA

A must for larger SUVs. As long as you don’t ignore it, this won’t just save you from reversing over a child, a toy or an abandoned bicycle, it also makes reverse-parking lots easier, especially when the vehicle’s trajectory is shown on the screen.

E L I M I N AT E

TYRE PRESSURE MONITORS

Mostly fitted to cars with run-flat tyres but after-market kits are available from some major tyre retailers. These monitor the pressure in each tyre (including the spare if you want) and warn when it’s getting low. Under-inflated tyres can make the car’s handling and braking wonky and create drag, using more fuel and wearing faster.

PEDESTRIANS

Some cars now have bonnets that lift up and away from the engine below them on detecting a pedestrian impact, creating a softer landing for whoever has been hit. ● reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

The Pathe poster is a limited-edition print by A.M. Cassandre and was a gift to my husband from a design colleague. The chair is a Snelling chair from Gordon Mather Industries, and I like this cushion from Scout House in St Kilda.

TEAPOT

My relaxation is to sit down with a pot of tea and read the paper. Years ago Craig bought me this AJ teapot (above left) from Arne Jacobsen’s Stelton, Cylinda-Line range. It pours beautifully, keeps the tea hot and is the sort of thing you keep for life. I even take it on holidays.

My favourite thing

Craig’s dad died when Craig was 25. His dad rowed for Scotch College so, after a year’s quest, I found the oar at C. Blunt Boat Builders, in Williamstown. They arranged for a signwriter to write his dad’s team on it. I gave it to him for a “big” birthday.

I studied fine art before swapping to design. I usually do architectural stuff but I’ve started doing portraits. This is Professor Miles Prince, a haematologist who runs the Snowdome Foundation to raise money to fight against blood cancer. I did life drawing at Swinburne and we used these easels. When they were sold off, Craig bought me one as a present. (DEREK SWALWELL)

I like grouping paintings or photos. If you reframe them in a similar frame – unless they have a gorgeous original one – it gives them new life. My mother, Sue Whittle, gave me the Kenneth Jack and Arnold Shaw works. The black-and-white painting was purchased from a school fete, and I’ve collected the others or they were gifts.

One of Fiona’s most recognisable restoration/ renovations is the red butterfly roof house in Beach Road, Beaumaris, designed by Mockridge Stahle & Mitchell in 1957. “People love the style of mid-century houses,” Fiona says. “They were ahead of their time, with big eaves, stone fireplaces, lots of light and living rooms looking to the garden, rather than the street. Many had a Stegbar window wall, designed by Robin Boyd.” Fiona also writes a blog, Beaumaris Modern, on the area’s mid-century houses, to encourage people to preserve, rather than demolish, them. ● As told to ANN PILMER editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

ou won’t find any knock-off designs in Fiona Austin’s Beaumaris house. “When you think of the work developing drawings and prototypes for a product, I think you have to honour the skills of the designer,” Fiona says. “You are better off saving up and buying the real thing. They last and hold their value and you have something special to hand on.” Fiona, an interior designer with thriving residential business Austin Design Associates, and her husband, Craig Austin, a design professor at Swinburne University, live and breathe design. They are fans of the mid-century era. Their 1968 home for their family of four (they have two sons) is full of wonderful examples, such as their Arne Jacobsen

L I G H T \ My dad, Edward Whittle, loved architecture and modern design as a young man. When I left home he gave me a Clement Meadmore lamp. I didn’t appreciate it and left it in a share house. About seven years ago, I started researching mid-century design and I’ve been searching for one since. I found it in a Beaumaris house and dad helped me restore it. WHERE I GREW UP

LIVINIA NIXON T

here are moments that define generations of Australians, forever preserved in the golden aspic of childhood memory. Such as when the Olympics came to Melbourne, man first walked on the moon, Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon or Australia claimed the America’s Cup. Livinia Nixon was eight years old and living in Hepburn Avenue, Beaumaris, when Australia II, skippered by John Bertrand, ended the longest-winning streak in history in September 1983. “My brother David went to school with John Bertrand’s son Lucas and we were also family friends. In the lead-up to the America’s Cup we would say our prayers at night and pray that the sailors were safe and that they would win,” the sunny Channel Nine weather presenter, public speaker and actress says. The third child and only daughter of real estate agent Kevin Nixon and his accountant wife Helen laughingly recalls her own induction to sailing about this time. “Antony my eldest brother would only let me go out on the catamaran with him when he was practising capsizing.

“I didn’t care less that we got dunked in the water 25 times. I was just happy to be around him. “Being the little sister I was often tortured, but in a nice way. We had a laundry chute that my brothers were constantly pushing me down and I didn’t seem to mind. Although I have my own laundry chute now and my five-year-old Henry is under strict instructions not to show his little brother Ted where it is.” The neighbourhood was a close-knit community and even the pets enjoyed free range. “Our turtle, imaginatively called Torty, had our phone number painted on its back because it used to go wandering. We were also forever getting calls from the local school that our labrador Gina had been raiding kids’ lunchboxes for Vegemite sandwiches. “We had friends across the street, so there was always someone to play with. We would drive them mad at the local milk bar because we used to save up our pocket money and go in there and say, ‘I’d like three freckles and one snake, no wait, stop, make it one snake and two milk bottles’ like it was the most important decision of the day … which it was.

The poor man probably made 15 cents on each transaction and yet it took 20 minutes. “We used to have marathon Monopoly sessions that lasted three days and play cricket in the street with the rubbish bin as a wicket. “I became a bit obsessed about cricket. I remember seeing Bodyline [1984 TV miniseries that dramatised the events of the 1932-33 Ashes series] and I wrote a sign on my bedroom door which said NO POMS ALLOWED as if any passing Englishman would come down my bedroom hallway. It’s

Fawkner’s location and the size and quality of the apartments have convinced many empty-nesters to make the move from large luxury homes to apartments. “This market is looking for a luxury, no-maintenance lifestyle but with all the design and lifestyle benefits of a multimillion-dollar home.” Les says about 20 buyers have taken apartment living to another level, combining two, three or even four apartments to create their ultimate, bespoke inner-city residence with up to six bedrooms and working with the project’s architects and interior designers to tailor floor plans to meet their specific requirements. Les says about 60 per cent of The Fawkner’s apartments are sold, with buyers showing equal interest in all apartment types and outlooks. He says there’s an excellent selection of both bay and park outlooks still available. The Fawkner’s penthouses will be released for sale early next year and will measure up to 500 square metres with roof terraces, priced from $2,950,000. The design of the building and the way it responds to, and enhances, the neighbourhood is important, along with well-designed and well-maintained gardens and surroundings. CV (Camberwell Village) at Camberwell Junction brings together two of Australia’s most prestigious building design firms – architects Elenberg Fraser and the interior

design practice of Hecker Guthrie – to create luxury, amenity and functionality in a location that appeals to all ages. at ground level. The quality of the interior design is vital in maintaining an apartment’s value. Just like having a well-known architect for the building, a well-known interior designer experienced in the fit-out of prestigious apartments not only ensures the comfort of the home but contributes to its enduring value. Luxury, quality, comfort and functionality are expressed in the logic and skill of the layout, in the materials, fittings and finishes and the way the designer has worked with the orientation and architecture of the building. The ideal is an interior with a timeless quality – one that looks as fresh and interesting

in several years’ time as it does when new. Cohesion in design philosophy between the interior and the exterior of the building is an intangible element, and one that is “felt” rather than seen. Hamish Guthrie says the organic forms of the two curved towers at CV were a stronger-than-usual influence on the interior design. “We were responding to the architecture and I hope our work enhances the architecture and vice versa. The building curves and moves in and out, which means that almost every apartment is a bespoke design,” he says. “But, beyond the response to the

architecture, we are creating people’s homes and we put ourselves in the shoes of the clients and think about how they live and what they need. We always go back to that considered approach.” A significant factor that creates an appealing place to live is the idea of the whole building as the occupant’s home and not just the apartment. “We want people to have the ability to move through the building and use it as they would use their own home,” says Hamish. “We think of the apartment as starting at the front door of the lobby.” He says the CV lobbies take on a residential scale. “They are comfortable, textural with curves and stone floors, and intimate spaces.” The 94 apartments of CV Tower, the premium apartments in the development, will offer a choice of classic or contemporary interiors. Both are a finely crafted balance between providing a sophisticated living space with luxurious details and excellent functionality while not restricting the owners in expressing their own taste and personality in art and furnishings. The classic choice will feature matt oak parquetry floors, antique bronze finishes, 2pac panelled joinery and stone benchtops. Stone floors, chrome finishes, timber veneer wall panelling and integrated joinery will feature

in the contemporary choice. All apartments will have detailed joinery that maximises storage and use of space – including a television zone – and many will have a built-in bar. CV Tower kitchens come with Gaggenau appliances and will be designed so that, while the layout is open-plan, the preparation and work area is somewhat concealed. Bathrooms will feature Astra Walker tapware, Duravit basins and toilet suites, and Kaldewei baths. “Quality materials underpin everything about the design in both buildings,” says Hamish. He says CV One will have a clean and contemporary look and colour schemes will include a striking dark option. In both, abundant natural light and far-reaching views will enhance the appeal of the interiors. CV Tower offers residents more than just home-sized apartments. Shared facilities include a 20-metre pool, spa, sauna, pool deck with two barbecues, two shared kitchens and dining rooms that enable residents to cater for large functions. Landscaped gardens with quiet seating areas complete the picture. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON bjohanson@theweeklyreview.com.au » cvapartments.com.au » The display suite at Porter Street, Hawthorn awthorn East, is open on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2pm or by appointment.

I

t could be a country estate, complete with sprawling gardens, pool and tennis court. But it’s Balwyn – a mere 10 kilometres from the city. Cumbrae sits high on the hill in Yarrbat Avenue, one of the suburb’s “name” streets. In a street chock-full of big houses on big blocks, it is nevertheless one of a select few that still occupies its original land of 3072 square metres. Cumbrae’s position gives it enviable views across to the Dandenongs in the east, and sweeping vistas to the north and the Macedon Ranges. Along the way, the towers of Westfield shopping centre come into view and, at night, lights turn the distant hills into a glittering fairyland. The vendors, who are preparing to downsize, say one of the things that drew them to Cumbrae five years ago was the size of the land, its position and those views. You are not just buying a house here. You are buying a lifestyle. That lifestyle begins when the wrought-iron front gates glide open to reveal a winding drive bordered by garden beds filled with perfumed pink roses, box hedges and neat balls of topiary. The destination is the double-gabled house set beneath a cast-iron-trimmed verandah. Original Welsh slates still cover much of the roof, which is crowned by a central tower. It looks Victorian but it was a 20th-century addition. The house, built in the 1890s and considerably extended since, marries modern convenience and comfort with formal and informal living spaces in a style that recalls old-world glamour. The luxury begins at the front door and continues through the sumptuous hall where double arches have details picked out in gold paint, and cornices and ceiling roses hint at the glamour to come. The formal living room is a picture of stately elegance: taupe-coloured walls with white window trim, a triple bay window looking to the front garden, an original white marble mantelpiece and soft cream carpet underfoot. Luxurious drapes with swags, gold tassels and trims finish the windows. The formal dining room is resplendent with ruby red

carpet and a black marble mantelpiece. Windows are dressed in metres of silk drapes and a glittering crystal chandelier lights the room. The main bedroom, also at the front of the house, is another grand statement with its soft French-blue walls, white trim and voluminous drapes. It has a walk-in wardrobe and large en suite. Two more bedrooms are in a wing on the western side of the house, with a study or bedroom at the end of the hall. The kitchen, meals area and family room that sprawl across the rear of the house are the show-stoppers. Metres of timber benchtops, huge amounts of storage – above and below the benches – and contemporary stainless-steel appliances should make cooking and entertaining a breeze. The vendors’ photos are testament to sit-down dinners for 70 people, including a wedding reception, and cocktail parties for more than 50 in this huge area. At one end of the kitchen is the large walk-in pantry; at the other end is the sink, and everything else is in between, including a purpose-built computer desk and work station. The rest of this room is given over to the meals area and family room with an open fireplace. When the party spills outside, there is plenty of room on the deck, where the views stretch beyond the treetops to the ranges in the north. Stairs lead down to the garden, which is a mix of curved paths, mature trees and densely planted beds. Mirrored panels at the end of the garden hide the pool equipment and give the garden a sense of continuing to infinity. Potted citrus on the terracotta-tiled terrace around the swimming pool evoke a flavour of the Mediterranean, while the north-south floodlit tennis court is another sure-fire winner. On the lower level, a large multipurpose room with an en suite could be a teenage retreat. With its stunning garden surrounds and easy access to schools and shops, Cumbrae is a house that offers the complete lifestyle package. ● MARIA HARRIS property@theweeklyreview.com.au

This 1930s townhouse will attract plenty of admirers. Built in 1935 to the exacting standards of architects Hughes & Orme, it has classic Tudor style with a pitched roofline and a half-timbered facade with herringbone brickwork. Inside, period features include art deco fireplaces, generous proportions and decorative ceilings. To the left of the wide entry hall is the formal sitting room, which benefits from a northerly orientation and a big window. Tasmanian oak floors feature throughout the downstairs. There’s a neutral colour scheme, which continues elsewhere and provides a backdrop against which artwork and antiques will shine. At the rear of the house is a renovated living room with black steel-framed windows and doors to the garden. The kitchen’s marble splashback gives it texture and richness. Upstairs are three bedrooms, all with great outlooks. One has a separate storage space and the main at the front gets the bonus of its own retreat, with more of those northerly views. There’s also a stylish bathroom. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

The coveted English Counties Estate contains many of Surrey Hills’ most impressive period properties. Built in 1910, this impeccable single-level Edwardian lives up to that standard. Heritage features such as intricate pressed ceilings, cornices, polished timber floors, leadlight windows and cast-iron fireplaces have all been integrated into a contemporary renovation. The main bedroom has a cast-iron open fireplace, walk-in wardrobe and en suite with timber cabinetry. Opposite, a second bedroom also has a fireplace. The third and fourth bedrooms both have built-in wardrobes, and all rooms benefit from split-system air-conditioning. Moving past a modern central bathroom and spacious laundry at the end of the hall, the house expands. The modern open-plan dining, meals and living area is a beautiful space, warmed by a gas fireplace. It is peppered with windows that frame the outdoor timber deck, yard and rear gardens. The kitchen is spacious too, featuring Caesarstone benches and stainless-steel appliances. ● JULIAN HEALEY

TOORAK \ 2 LASCELLES AVENUE This classic Marcus Martin mansion from the 1930s sits high on its double block. A gentle slope allows for a terraced garden and an apron for visitors’ parking. The house was skilfully refurbished and extended about 10 years ago; so skilfully that it more than meets today’s standards of luxury and amenity. The elegantly proportioned front rooms on both levels were retained. On the ground floor, beyond the drawing room, stair hall and study, the seamless extension provides a spacious, informal family living area. It overlooks a heated pool and a north-south tennis court. The kitchen, with granite and marble benchtops and integrated appliances, has a six-burner cooktop, three ovens, two refrigerators and self-closing drawers. A discreet lift and a second set of stairs serve the upper storey. An opulent guests’ and children’s area consists of four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a retreat. The basement contains a fully automated home cinema, cloak room and thermostatcontrolled cellar. The six-car garage is also located here. The house is air-conditioned and equipped with security, intercom and ducted vacuum. Toorak Village and the No. 8 tram are a block away. ● NEIL CLEREHAN

CAMBERWELL \ 22 TRAFALGAR ROAD A colourful, flourishing cottage garden makes a picture-perfect setting to this c1888 Hawthorn-brick Victorian house. In the front garden, the established Rick Eckersley landscaping creates an inviting prelude to a tiled, lace-trimmed verandah, and a pretty outlook from the bay window of the formal lounge room. The back garden has an elevated deck, a creeper-clad pergola leading to a plunge pool and nooks for relaxing, outdoor dining and entertaining. The house retains not only period features such as marble fireplaces, deep cornices and ornate ceiling roses, but a great sense of its original character. Sympathetic renovations make the house comfortable but you don’t have to look hard to see potential for dramatic contemporary renewal. The original rooms off a central hall comprise three large bedrooms (one with en suite), a formal lounge and a dining room/study, which has french doors to a sunny side deck. The rear half has a bathroom, laundry, family room, and light-filled kitchen and meals area with timber floors and sliding glass doors to the deck. The double garage, attached to a workshop/studio, is entered from the back lane. The property, which uses every bit of its 861 square metres, is a short walk from Camberwell Junction’s shops and cafes, and close to transport and schools. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON

TOORAK \ 36 VERDANT AVENUE Breathtaking gardens, a casual yet sophisticated interior, an intimate relationship with nature and a celebration of quality and craftsmanship – these are the hallmarks of this spectacular Toorak house. Built more than 20 years ago, the house is an architectural masterpiece that responds to its rich landscape and the changing seasons. Capitalising on its advantageous orientation, the building is a long rectangular shape with extensive glazing on its northern wall. Flexible living spaces open to courtyards, blurring the line between the interior and exterior. The blue front door opens to a floor of travertine tiles. The rest of the material palette is layered – featuring concrete finishes and zinc cladding – and is an artwork in itself. The distinctive timber joinery that is a feature of the house can be seen here. Behind its doors are secret compartments and shelving. At the back of the ground floor are the kitchen and laundry, and a family room with an impressive double-height ceiling. Upstairs retains the same architectural language. The main bedroom has an understated design that lets nature take centre stage. It has an en suite that makes the most of the house’s textured concrete form. This space could easily serve as a spa retreat. A suspended bridge leads to another bedroom and bathroom, which can be closed off. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

Award-winning interior designer Sue Carr has extensively remodelled this POSTCODE remarkable property, which backs onto the Yarra River. Although it was renovated almost 25 years ago, one could be forgiven for thinking it was done more recently. That’s because the house encompasses a timeless design with a pared-back natural palette, bespoke joinery, quality finishes and a carefully considered floor plan. Set on a spectacular parcel of land that falls more than 14 metres towards the Yarra, the house has been orientated to take in dramatic views. On the top level are two big bedrooms, both with north-facing balconies. The middle floor serves as the heart of the house and comprises a kitchen with marble surfaces, two flexible living rooms and an open-plan dining area. The bottom floor has two more bedrooms, a laundry, a rumpus room and an abundance of storage. A solar-heated pool and cabana precede a private jetty. ● FRANCESCA CARTER
