FIRST PERSON

I am Lisa McNaughton … and I’m a professional matchmaker I studied psychology and I’ve always had an interest in human connection; human behaviour. Back in the day, I was in corporate marketing, and I left to have kids. I had a retail business of my own, then did some TV production work. What sets our business (Yvonne Allen and Associates) apart is that we encourage people to have a look at themselves and take stock: ultimately the way we relate to other people begins with how we relate to ourselves. We call ourselves personal-search consultants. What we do is we sit down with each person and really get to know them, find out about their backgrounds, their lifestyles and about the people they’d be open to meeting. It’s a privilege to listen to people’s stories and their particular experiences. I have had people come in that have never had a significant relationship in their life and are in their 40s. I’ve had people that have jumped from relationship to relationship to relationship. There are others whose marriages have broken down or they have been tragically widowed. They come in because they can’t understand why they haven’t been able to connect with someone, and they want a child or they want a family – they just don’t know why it isn’t working for them. A lot of the time it is self-esteem. The most unbelievably accomplished people have no belief in themselves. We’re the longest-running agency of our kind in Australia. We’ve become really boutique; it’s that personal, respectful, discreet, private, vetting thing that people want. Online dating can be really devaluing; people just disappear on you. You’ve got to have the time, energy and inclination and you’ve got to be pretty tough, too, I think. We don’t use photos; our focus is on the whole person. And some people just take terrible photographs. I think there is a lid for every pot and I think the secret starts with having a really good look at yourself and the way you connect to yourself. The people who have the best luck are open: they’re open to trusting us; trusting the process. It’s the most amazing feeling in the world when you can put people together and they have that connection.” ●

Seeing double: early morning at Hamer Hall, Southbank ●

I grew up with Afghan hounds; those regal, lithesome dogs with long, shimmering coats like Mariah Carey’s mane. They were trendy in the 1970s, when my parents met (these were show dogs and dad would run the judge’s ring, flaunting corduroy flares and a Bee Gees swagger). Just as those flares had their moment, I hardly ever see an Afghan now; French bulldogs and sausage dogs are the pups de jour. This week, writer Erin Munro considers the pros and cons of miniature in-vogue breeds, and we welcome TV columnist Luke Dennehy with what’s hot to binge on free-to-air and streaming sites. ●

aitlin Schmidt can’t pinpoint the exact moment she first saw a French bulldog, but she knows it was online. “It was about eight years ago, when social media was starting to use them because they were cute,” she says. “Previous to that, I don’t think I’d ever seen one in real life.” Schmidt, a university student, grew up in a family that owned Australian cattle dogs, but after the pint-sized bulldogs caught her eye, she bought a 13-week old ‘Frenchie’ pup, Pickle. Cute and affectionate, Pickle is now five and doesn’t require as much exercise as did the working breeds of Schmidt’s childhood. She lives comfortably in Schmidt’s inner-city share house and regularly has strangers stop her during walks for pats and photos. Pickle’s popularity is no surprise. According to the Australian National Kennel Council’s (ANKC) registration figures, French bulldogs were the third-most-popular dog breed in Australia last year. It’s a ranking reached quite smartly over the past decade. In 2010, registrations for French bulldogs stood at just 918. By 2017, they’d leapt to 4082. What makes certain dog breeds fashionable? People’s lifestyle factors, for one. Dr Karen Hedberg, ANKC’s canine health and wellbeing committee chairperson, says there’s a trend towards smaller, short-haired dogs. “This is a direct consequence of smaller backyards, an increasing percentage of flats and decreasing amount of time to spend on pets in our electronic age,” she says. The rise of other breeds seems to bear the theory out. Over the past five years, there has been a 71.4-percent increase in the number of Italian greyhounds, tiny sighthounds with extremely short coats: 805 were registered in 2017 in Australia, up from 354 in 2013. Renee Bourke, treasurer of the

Italian Greyhound Club of Victoria, has noticed more interest in the breed lately and credits it to people wanting smaller dogs that don’t shed hair. She says a lot of new owners “do tend to be people living in inner-city areas with smaller yards”. Another factor appearing to elevate breeds is the irresistible sway of celebrity and pop culture. Once Kardashian clan member Kylie Jenner (who has more than 100 million Instagram followers) became the owner of Italian greyhounds, “it brought the breed to the spotlight”, says Bourke. Ditto Frenchie stardom on the back of celeb owners Hugh Jackman and Lady Gaga. A 2014 study led by Brooklyn College psychology professor Stefano Ghirlanda found breeds often had a spike in popularity when they were featured in films such as 101 Dalmatians or The Adventures of Milo and Otis (which helped drive the pug craze of the 1990s). Today, social media is more readily consumed than film, and may be more influential. Scroll through Instagram or Twitter and trendy breeds are everywhere, in memes and with their own social media accounts (for example, a Frenchie called Manny (@manny_the_frenchie) has 1.1 million Instagram followers). Riding that trend is Karan White, the founder and director of Power Pets, a talent agency launched that specialises in animal influencers; that is, pets with strong social media followings. White is the owner of two dachshunds, Fella and Tiddie, which have more than 140,000 fans on Facebook and nearly 27,000 followers on Instagram under the handle @doxiesdownunder. Dachshunds are also popular. Miniature, smooth-haired dachshunds have steadily increased in Australia in the past decade, with 805 new registrations last year, and there are more than 8.3 million Instagram posts with the hashtag #dachshund.

Though White says any dog has the capacity to be a digital influencer – “it’s about having a unique presence and a great story” – she’s noticed smaller dogs tend to be especially admired online, and people are gravitating to these breeds. “In my view, that’s unfortunate because, while particular breeds may look pretty, dog ownership is something that should be considered responsibly and not based on the capacity for the dog to look cute,” White says. White is a long-time dachshund owner. She says many people aren’t aware that the breed’s long back means they have delicate spines. It’s not uncommon for White to see

inbred features. These include breathing, eye and hip problems. When Schmidt bought Pickle, she was told the puppy had underdeveloped leg muscles. “I later found out that was hip dysplasia,” she says. At age two, Pickle had a full hip replacement for about $6500. Six months later, she had her second hip replaced for another $6500. “I knew [hip dysplasia] was something they can have, but good breeders are supposed to be breeding them so they don’t have that genetic trait,” Schmidt says. Kate Browne, lifestyle editor at Choice, reported in March on the costs of owning a brachycephalic dog and says figures from pet insurance

FRENCH BULLDOGS PROS \ They are great inner-city dogs, and a playful and affectionate personality makes them fun companions. CONS \ Being a brachycephalic breed can lead to health risks and affect their quality of life.

MINIATURE DACHSHUNDS PROS \ Loyal and clever, “sausage dogs” bond closely. They fit into smaller homes with ease, but daily walks are a must. CONS \ Big barkers, these little dogs can be loud. Due to their long bodies and short legs, they can also be more prone to musculoskeletal conditions.

you, English bulldogs are sweet-natured and love children. They need only a 20-minute walk each day. CONS \ Another brachycephalic dog, they’re prone to eye, breathing and hip problems.

CAVOODLES PROS \ Cavoodles are cute, fluffy and toy-like. Their non-shedding, often hypoallergenic, coat makes them popular with allergy sufferers. CONS \ But not all cavoodles are 100 per cent hypoallergenic. They can suffer from eye defects and heart problems.

online crowdfunding campaigns for a dachshund’s spinal surgery, which can cost anything from $6000 to $25,000. RSPCA Victoria cautions buyers who have their heart set on a particular breed just because it’s in vogue. “Breeds that are considered ‘popular’ are often sold for an inflated price,” says RSPCA Victoria head of prevention Sophie Buchanan. Moreover, the demand for specific dogs can lead to cruel and unscrupulous practices, such as puppy farms and irresponsible breeding that might exacerbate the potential for health problems. “While there are trends for certain breeds, such as French bulldogs, it is important to consider any breedspecific risk factors,” says Buchanan. Frenchies are classified as a brachycephalic, which means they have a flat face and squashed nose. Brachycephalic dogs are prone to health issues due to their exaggerated

company PetSure revealed the average claim for breathingobstruction surgery – common for French bulldogs – was about $1300, but the maximum was $12,000. Browne says it’s crucial that owners of these dogs look into pet insurance as soon as they get their puppies. “As soon as that dog’s recognised as having a pre-existing condition – if there are any notes from a vet saying that dog has breathing difficulties, for example – it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to seek insurance.” The RSPCA advises would-be buyers who have their heart set on a pure-bred dog to try rescue organisations first. If unsuccessful, then find a good breeder who lets you visit the place where the puppy was born and meet its parents. Though Schmidt adores Pickle, she says she probably won’t buy another French bulldog in the future due to the health issues and the expense. ●

RICKY SAM

On the Rich list The first-floor bar at Kisume is called the Chablis Bar, a good indication that this tri-level, New York-style Japanese restaurant takes wine seriously. The second clue comes from the 1000-strong, temperature-controlled, wine wall abutting the Chablis Bar. Then there’s the presence of Philip Rich (pictured), now head wine guy at the Lucas Group (Kisume, Chin Chin, Baby, et al) who’s been buying, selling, serving, judging and teaching about wine in Melbourne for the past two decades. Rich has an encyclopaedic knowledge of wine but can talk about his pet subject without boring you silly. He’s as enthusiastic about benchmark vintage Grand Cru Chablis as he is about well-made, great value local pinot noir. The monthly wine dinners at Kisume will see chefs Joshua Bedell and Kitak Lee create five-course Japanese menus to match the wines Rich chooses; sashimi and duck matched with rare vintages of Dauvissat Grand Cru Chablis or Wagyu and quail paired with a New Zealand and Australian Pinot Noir comparison. “Japanese food matches really well with many different wines,” says Rich. “Sometimes that will be the more expensive, high-end wines that we have such great access to but we don’t want to just pitch the dinners at that level – we want to think outside the box and explore German Riesling, Barolo and white-and-red Burgundy, both the affordable stuff and super premium.” ●

Super dooper When Supernormal Canteen opened in St Kilda last year, it brought with it the playfulness of the 2013 Gertrude Street pop-up. Japanese curtains hang over the bamboo entrance and long marble bar of the open kitchen. Tables are set with condiments and napkins. We order food with little white pencils and reference pictures of Asian beers, cocktails and the mystery brew (tonight, it’s Moon Dog Thunder Lips Yuzu Red IPA) to drink. Mountains of crisp garlic are scooped from school prawns and we remove charred meat from hibachi-grill skewers – a whiting fillet with its spine deep fried and tsukune chicken dipped in soy, an egg yolk bobbing in the centre. Sweet-corn congee with smoked butter and nori arrives in a ceramic noodle-soup cup – comforting but incredibly filling. Still, we get through the Saturday special of smoky unagi on rice mixed through with dashi cream. I don’t order the $17 lobster roll; I’ve had it too many times. But I do revisit twice-cooked duck leg with brown meat that shreds off the bone into fluffy baos and ‘that’ peanut-butter parfait. ● Supernormal Canteen ● 2/157 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda ● 9525 4488

inter is here. We tend to realise it around May when the sun sleeps in a little longer and you find yourself reaching for last season’s coat. In a city packed with indoor activities and seasonal events, there’s no excuse to slump on the couch. In the heart of the city alone there are enough restaurants, bars and underground events and galleries to keep you occupied every evening of the year. But for this inaugural ‘Melbourne on $’ column, I’m suggesting the ultimate midweek winter night that’s suitable for warming up mates and couples. It starts with Japanese relaxation, continues with an iconic market event and interactive (read: Instagrammable) hot chocolate, and finishes with a sweaty jazz festival jam session – all for $60 a head. SAM WOOD \ FITNESS

A mental workout means all systems go

ften when people are frustrated that they’re going around in circles and getting no closer to reaching their weightloss goal, it’s because they have not yet taken charge. If you are afraid to express how you feel and vocalise what you are trying to achieve in fear of what others might think or say, it is highly likely you will not achieve what you want. The road to getting in shape is rarely a smooth one. There are going to be people who try to sabotage you and also many challenges along the way. If this is

14

T H E W E E K LY R E V I E W

resonating with you, then it is time to give your assertiveness muscle the workout it really needs. When it comes to weight loss, assertiveness is one of the most valuable skills you can have under your belt. It gives you the power to stand up for yourself, set boundaries and give you total control. The good news is, strengthening assertiveness is no different from building any other muscle in your body, it simply takes training. When you’re targeting your assertiveness muscle, there are specific areas I want you to focus on.

BUILD YOUR BELIEFS \

SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS \

PUT YOUR FLEX TO THE TEST \

Developing assertiveness all starts with reshaping your beliefs. If your assertiveness muscle needs a bit of work, it’s likely your beliefs are holding you back from achieving your goals. You probably think that saying how you feel will burden or upset others, or that maybe it’s embarrassing or selfish. You might even convince yourself that saying how you really feel will ruin your relationships. If this behaviour rings a bell, try to focus on changing your mind-set by continually reminding yourself of the following: ■ Telling others how you feel doesn’t make you a bad person. ■ It’s OK to speak your mind and stand up for yourself. ■ Being assertive will help you become the best version of you.

When refining your assertiveness skills, think of the most assertive person you know. It’s likely they’ll exhibit a few, if not all, of the following types of behaviour: ■ They never say sorry for having an opinion. ■ They never apologise when they choose not to do something. ■ They’re keen to listen to others’ opinions, but they don’t necessarily agree with them. Not everyone is blessed with a natural sense of assertiveness, but it’s something you can definitely teach yourself. So, focus on slowly but surely incorporating some of this behaviour into your routine. Remind yourself that being assertive is never something to be embarrassed about; it’s something to be proud of.

The reality is, becoming assertive and training this “muscle” won’t be as easy as clicking your fingers. There’s no denying that just like strengthening your core or toning your arms, flexing this muscle will take time, persistence and commitment. However, a couple of things to always keep in mind are the following: if your first attempts at making your intentions clear fail, this makes you normal. Secondly, and most importantly, if getting in shape or making a change to your routine is truly important to you, then those closest to you should understand. If they don’t, then perhaps some strong words from you is just what they need. ●

Assertiveness is key to weight-loss, for maintaining focus and intent. ISTOCK

A modern approach

T

here are a few important things that Catholic students remember from their time at school. The friendships made in the classrooms, academic and sporting achievements and, of course, the school uniform. What many also remember is their Catholic school motto, even many years after finishing school. Usually in Latin, Catholic school mottos in Australia have a long and esteemed history. They hold their educational roots in English mediaeval times, when Latin was known as the language of universities and these early educational institutions adopted such Latin mottos. Teachers and students discussed profound ideas in the dialect which nowadays is rarely known or used in the classroom. Australian Catholic University Dean of La Salle Academy, Professor Brother David Hall, says Latin was (and still is) recognised as the official language

of the Catholic Church. And when many of the Catholic schools were first set up in Australia in the early to late 1800s, they adopted Latin mottos for their schools. “The language could capture profound thinking or ideas in pithy ways,” Hall explains. Some schools took their mottos from obscure Catholic songs or texts to relate to the school founders, others were more masculine in tone. More recently, this has caused some schools to either rethink or discuss the relevance of their mottos within the school community. “I think some of them translated literally can be masculine, which is not helpful if it’s a boys’ school that has become co-ed or if it’s a girls’ school with that type of motto,” Hall says. While some schools have been discussing the value of their Latin mottos, others have held onto their heritage to keep their connection to the past.

not seeking to be interpreted, it’s not a good motto.” In Australia newer schools and universities, such as ACU itself, have adopted English language mottos rather than harking back to the past. Its motto, “Truth in Love”, speaks to learning truth in a compassionate and respectful way rather than an argumentative one, Hall says. ACU holds annual symposiums about their motto and its meaning in contemporary society. Hall says while ACU’s motto is an English language motto, it does take into account a Latin language past with “truth” (veritas in Latin) a common word used in many Latin school mottos. And like many of the schools set up more than a hundred years ago, newer Catholic schools and universities have followed a more modern Catholic Church tradition. Hall says when a new bishop is chosen in the Catholic Church, they have to choose a motto – in modern times they have chosen English mottos. “To express themselves in more contemporary ways,” Hall says. ●

They also connect past and present staff and students – a common thread throughout the generations. “I was a school principal before becoming a professor at ACU in Sydney with a school which had the Latin motto and whether I spoke to a student who was 80 or 90 [or 40] years old the one thing they all know is the motto,” Hall says. “The last school I was principal at (Marcellin College, Randwick) had the motto ‘Aeterna Non Caduca’ which translates to ‘The Eternal, Not the Transitory’. “Because the motto was so well-known by students and alumni we decided we would commission a statue to interpret the motto – the statue was named with one word, eternity.” The statue and its title, Hall says, gave the motto a modern context – a way for staff, students and alumni (who were asked to name the work of art now proudly displayed at the school) to interpret the school’s motto. “My personal view is that you should always have to seek ways to translate a motto into a modern context – some are really quite profound ... but if it’s

EDUCATION & INNOVATION

Motto and meaning

E

veryday, students from Melbourne’s Catholic schools wear the crest and motto of their schools on their uniform, perhaps without thinking too much about its history, meaning or relevance in 2018. These mottos are, however, at the forefront of each day for the principals of schools including Academy of Mary Immaculate (ACMI), Whitefriars Catholic Boys College and Sacre Coeur in Melbourne. ACMI principal Sister Mary Moloney says the school’s Latin motto, “Speculum Sine Macula” (meaning “Mirror without blemish”) was introduced with the first crest designed by John Hennessy in 1908. “It is a dedication to Mary,” she says. “Today we no longer use that line [as our official motto] but rather identify with the strength of our Sisters of Mercy roots and refer to the college and its history with its links and evolution with Melbourne.”

Rather than keep one motto, the school now chooses a new one each year which the students and staff focus on. “The college motto/theme is chosen every year by the incoming senior student leadership team to galvanise the current cohort, into thought and action, that is relevant to their times and experiences,” Moloney says. “Essentially, the college honours its past retaining the Latin in the current crest, but would consider its Mercy ethos as its defining identity and lives by its universal values.” At Whitefriars Catholic Boys College in Melbourne’s southeast, the school’s motto “Almae in Fide Parentis” (“In the care of a loving mother”) was first adopted in the early 1960s when the school opened. Whitefriars first principal, Fr Frank Shortis O’Carm explained the school’s motto in a piece for the school website, before his death in 2015.

WHITEFRIARS

Sacre Coeur in Glen Iris has the motto, “Cor Unum et anima una in corde Jesu”, meaning “One heart and one mind in the heart of Jesus Christ”. Sacre Coeur principal Anna Masters says the motto is that of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. “[They] established Sacre Cœur in 1888. It is echoed in our crest and motto, ‘Cor Unum’. It is central to who we are,” Masters says. “I think this motto is timeless and relevant to all peoples and ages. The nature and needs of a time might shape how it is lived by members of the Sacre Cœur community but, at the core of our lives at Sacre Cœur, it is universal.” “This motto is part of our DNA as a school of the Sacred Heart and we share it with many others across the world. “The mission of RSCJ (Society of Sacred Heart) schools is to discover and reveal the love of the Heart of Jesus through the work of education. “This transformative education calls people to realise their true selves and bring about a more just society.” ●

SPECIAL PROMOTION

He said the school chose their motto to be different from other boys’ schools at the time. “[Mottos for boys’ schools] were usually exhortatory and vigorous, you could even say, muscular,” O’Carm said. “Some examples: ‘Esto Vir’ (Be a man), ‘Sursum Corde’ (Lift up your hearts), ‘Quae Supra Quaere’ (Seek the things that are above), ‘Fidelis and Fortis’ (Faithful and strong). That kind of motto just did not seem right for us. “Then a young man named Terry Quinn, who had studied with us for a few years and later moved on to the language department of the University of Melbourne, suggested a phrase from an ancient hymn for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel: ‘In the care of a loving Mother.’ The line in the hymn is ‘Almae parentis in fide’ which we changed for the sake of balance to ‘Almae in fide parentis’. “In choosing the motto we were expressing the hope that the school and the individual student would always be under the protection of Mary. We were also hoping that the school itself would be a nurturing and protecting mother, an alma mater for all students.”

hey say rock stars, supermodels and fruit do not age gracefully. Lucky the same doesn’t go for houses. Made over in 2008, this 1980s residence struts its maturity proudly, with a floor plan in-tune for family harmony and subtle bling lending sophistication. The owners purchased the property in 2007. The drawcards were the size and functionality of the house, as well as the scope for outdoor activity. The five bedrooms suited their needs, and they’ve added an en suite, so the bathroom-count now equals that of the bedrooms. A lounge, family room, retreat and open-plan kitchen and dining meant living space aplenty, so there wasn’t much to do in big-picture terms. Yet due to their input, the house now looks little like its former self. Enhanced up-front, stripped and refitted internally and renovated throughout; exposed-brick walls and timber ceilings were banished and the Brady Bunch vibe swapped for urbane finesse. The quiet, elevated location just off Lower Heidelberg Road affords proximity to shops, schools, transport and rolling parklands. Automatic gates to the double garage, security pedestrian entry and landscaped gardens presage the house, where a solid-timber door slides for entry. The bedroom off the foyer has built-in wardrobes and an en suite. An extensive storage unit qualifies it to moonlight as a home office. Next up, the huge main bedroom comes with a mammoth walk-in wardrobe and five-star en suite. Pass the main bedroom and turn right to the lounge. Turn left to kitchen and dining areas adjoining the central courtyard. Enormous, covered for maximum usability and sporting an built-in barbecue, this courtyard is more aptly described as a club-lounge, entertainers’ pavilion. The real lounge, with a pebbled gas fireplace in a tiled feature wall, also connects with outdoors. Part the glass sliders here to a terrace overlooking the pool and backyard. The solar-heated, self-cleaning pool concludes at another terrace framed by a striking pergola. The second-storey retreat offers a two-roomed bathroom and three, fine bedrooms. One has an en suite, and two adjoin the panoramic rear balcony. ● KAY KEIGHERY property@domain.com.au

bbotsford continues to evolve as one of Melbourne’s most interesting suburbs. Just two kilometres from the CBD, it’s a world away cloaked in its quiet, heritage atmosphere, its artistic pursuits and the diversity and quality of landmarks and attractions. Abbotsford Convent and Collingwood Children’s Farm are probably the best known. Some would argue that Victoria Park, the original home of Collingwood Football Club, is more famous. The Skipping Girl, the first animated neon sign in Australia, is there and the suburb has many buildings on the Victorian Heritage Register. One of these stately structures was formerly part of the St Joseph’s Technical College, which opened in 1893. It has been repurposed by the prestigious architecture firm, Interlandi Mantesso, as six apartments. The penthouse is now for sale. Spread over more than 200 square metres, the two-level apartment has a warm, industrial aesthetic. Crisp, clean lines, wide expanses of black steel-framed windows, matt oak floors and a mixture of white walls and exposed brick create a sophisticated interior. Level one is three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The other two have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom. Also on this floor is a laundry with Miele washing machine and dryer. Level two is a wide open expanse of living, dining and kitchen and takes advantage of views to the city and beyond. Double doors lead to a terrace. The kitchen is a super-stylish blend of timber and black with black appliances, mirror splashback, black island bench and integrated joinery. The apartment has lift access and the windows are double glazed. A video intercom has been fitted and there are two secure car parks and storage. The many and varied dining options of Victoria Street are a short walk away and the charming streets of the immediate neighbourhood are sprinkled with cafes. Yarra Bend Park, with its bike and walking trails and its sporting grounds, is just a few minutes away. Afternoon tea at Studley Park Boathouse followed by a row on the river could be a regular Sunday pastime. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON property@domain.com.au

Unusual, interesting and very appealing, the renovation of this boom-era single-fronted cottage, although done some time ago, is sparkling fresh and wonderful. The two front bedrooms off the arched hallway retain their period features and both have open fireplaces. From there on, we are in the high-design world of the 21st century. The bathroom, next off the hall, is simple but quite extraordinary with moody green tiles surrounding a circular spa bath. The kitchen and living area is equally unusual. A tongue and groove gable ceiling with trusses and skylights gives a soaring impression of space and light. A brick fireplace repeats the angles and there is a glazed rear wall. Tessellated tiles with a contrasting border run throughout the living area and the landscaped rear courtyard. The kitchen has Miele appliances, including dual ovens, and stone benchtops. Underfloor heating and split-system airconditioning have been fitted along with an alarm system. The house is just minutes from Rathdowne Street cafes and restaurants. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON AGENT \ Nelson Alexander 9347 4322 PRICE \ $1.2 million – $1.3 million AUCTION \ June 23 at 12.30pm
