Moon fest unites Ann Lo, Albert Yew and Jessie Chan (pictured) are busy preparing for the Chinese Moon Festival in Whittlesea. Mr Yew, of the Whittlesea Chinese Association, said it was one of the most important festivals in China. ‘‘It is an evening celebration when families gather together to light lanterns, eat moon cakes and appreciate the round moon.’’ The association will share traditional songs, dance and moon cakes at the Lalor Library, 2B May Road, Lalor, on Saturday, September 29, from 1pm to 3pm. Details: albert@yewnited.com.au or phone 0469 756 599. Primary school children can make lanterns and eat moon cakes at Thomastown Library, 52 Main Street, Thomastown on Wednesday, September 12, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

MORE than $1 million will be spent to protect women and children in Whittlesea from family violence and homelessness. The project aims to prevent problems such as substance abuse or domestic violence that force women and children to leave the family home. Whittlesea, which has the highest rate of domestic violence in the northern suburbs, will get $1,043,922 under the state government’s ‘‘Families at Home’’ pilot project. Traditionally, family violence and homeless program professionals respond to a family in crisis by providing short-term or transitional accommodation. This project aims to step in early and prevent women and children from

becoming homeless. It will provide a range of services by family and child service provider Kildonan Uniting Care, housing agency HomeGround and women’s refuge service Salvation Army Crossroads through Kildonan’s Epping centre. ‘‘The agencies will operate as a one-stop hub model, providing a range of co-ordinated services including drug and alcohol counselling, mental health support and legal services,’’ said Kildonan’s chief executive Stella Avramopoulos. ‘‘It is an amazing collaboration that will directly and proactively address family violence and homelessness in the City of Whittlesea. “Where many homelessness programs are unable to respond to the community need until the family is out of the home, this approach has the opportunity to become involved while the family is still in their home. Families will get

access to a care team with a key case manager that will help them access a range of supports. Families at Home will respond to each family’s unique needs.’’ Housing Minister Wendy Lovell said the program had a strong emphasis on early intervention where professionals could work with a whole family to create household, family and relationship stability. Northern Metropolitan MLC Craig Ondarchie said the project ‘‘will make a big difference to the families who need help the most’’. Whittlesea council’s family and youth manager Mary Agostino welcomed the initiative. “This funding will go some way in supporting families. Council’s health and family services teams look forward to working with these agencies to ensure better outcomes for our community,” she said.

way to control a situation is by taking action before something has happened. So, early intervention programs should be promoted by the police and the African community. These programs can help parents deal with their children’s behavioural problems and should be continuously funded and supported by police and the state government. These programs can prevent crime and other problems by teaching African youth good manners and attitudes. I set up Youth in Progress in early 2011 for African teenagers. The program consists of three stages. Young people from East African origin will first participate in recreational and sport activities, learning skills and values. Then they are mentored and coached about the paths they can take in life. Finally, they engage in work experience and positively contribute to a local community or charity. ■

am the founder of Youth in Progress, an organisation helping youth from East African origin in the northern suburbs. The anti-social, and sometimes criminal behavior, of young people in our African communities arises from our social problems, but can be solved. People are too ready to blame other parties rather than see the issue as a deficiency in our system which has to be addressed. A recent announcement by Victoria Police about their concerns with African youth crime and the statistics published will make the situation worse. Victoria assistant commissioner Stephen Fontana revealed that Victorian youths born in Somali and Sudan were five times more likely to commit crimes than the general population. Police were also concerned about the level of violence used by this group and the young age of the offenders, with most under 21. Usually, a reactive response in any situation leads to arguments. THE Epping mother of a man who died at a festival is reeling after getting an email from organisers inviting her to the next event. Daniel Buccianti, 34, died of a drug cocktail overdose at the Rainbow Serpent Festival at Lexton, about 50 km north-west of Ballarat, in January. His mother, Adrianna Buccianti, said she had used her credit card to buy her son’s ticket on the internet, and claimed organisers should have known she was his mother. ‘‘Instead I get an email telling me to hurry up and buy tickets,’’ she said. ‘‘It triggered a whole roller-coaster of emotions.’’ She said that despite organisers promising to pass on condolences from other festival-goers who posted on the event’s website, she had heard nothing. ‘‘Not a phone call, not a

The newly formed Doreen Country Women’s Association has won its battle to hold a monthly market at Hilltop Park in Laurimar. The first market was almost cancelled after a council officer refused to approve it, president Kate Finlay said. ‘‘I had to personally guarantee that no damage to the park would occur. There had been residential complaints about traffic, parking and noise, but the first market (on Sunday, August 26) went off smoothly and now we have a monthly booking for the last Sunday of every month.’’ Secretary Melanie Osmond, pictured, said the group had greater aims than making pumpkin scones.

bunch of flowers for his funeral, but they could send me an email inviting me to the next festival,’’ she said. Daniel Buccianti died about 1.30am on January 29, several hours after phoning his mother and saying he had ‘‘taken some bad acid’’. ‘‘I want to know what happened during those missing hours, I want to know why nobody noticed he was ill,’’ she said. She said a toxicology report revealed he died of a combination of drugs, but she didn’t know if he had sought help. The coroner is investigating and will hold an inquest in November, two months before the next festival. ‘‘I want the festival banned, or at least made alcohol and drug-free,’’ she said. The festival organisers did not respond to queries, but the event website states no drugs are permitted.

THOUSANDS of residents in some of Whittlesea’s fastest growing suburbs face an indefinite wait for broadband internet. Although residents in parts of South Morang were switched on to broadband last week, there is still no date to link Doreen or Mernda to the National Broadband Network. Doreen resident and Neighbourhood Watch representative Peter Phillips said some residents suffered badly because of the old technology in the area. ‘‘The technology is so old it is at capacity and some areas can’t even get ADSL2,’’ Mr Phillips said. ‘‘It is not worth trying at high-volume times like a Friday night because the connection just drops out.’’ Holly Hearne, a spokeswoman for NBNCo, the national broadband network provider, said there was no certain timeframe for work to start in Doreen and Mernda, but work had started in neighbouring Mill Park. “Work has already commenced in Mill Park and more construction will come online within the year,’’ she said. ‘‘This is great news for local homes and busi-

nesses who will be some of the first in northern suburbs of Melbourne to get access to highspeed broadband. “Unfortunately, Mernda and Doreen are not included in the three-year rollout. However, NBNCo intends to update the three-year plan on an annual basis, and next March will add rollout information up until June 2016.’’ Telstra spokeswoman Jane de Gault said the company offered Bigpond mobile broadband to Doreen and Mernda customers. She said Telstra had upgraded parts of its network in Doreen and Mernda to ADSL capability, which ‘‘addressed some of the ADSL availability shortfall in these suburbs’’. ‘‘Telstra currently has the necessary infrastructure in place to provide Mill Park residents with a choice of both ADSL and cable internet,’’ Ms de Gault said. Meanwhile, internet service providers and telephone companies are in a race to sign up customers to South Morang’s new broadband network to access fast downloads of movies and other data. – Sue Hewitt

NINE north suburban teenagers hope to follow in the footsteps of an Epping boy who has signed with Italian soccer powerhouse Inter Milan. They will train and play in Italy this month on the same type of tour that led to Reno Piscopo, 14, being scouted into Inter Milan’s elite youth development team. The boys train at RMIT’s Bundoora campus with the Genova International School of Soccer, which organised the trip. Piscopo is not the first Australian boy picked for a Genova tour. Genova spokeswoman Angela Costantino said Theo Markelis was signed by Valencia in Spain when he was 16, then played for Vicenza in Italy before returning to play for Melbourne Victory. ‘‘The players on this tour will train and play against teams of the same age from some of Italy’s top teams, including Genoa and Juventus,’’ Costantino said. The boys leave on September 21 for two weeks in Ovada, in Piemonte, northern Italy. South Morang player Alan Peric, 15, said it would be ‘‘a life-changing experience’’. ‘‘I hope to learn and to bring my knowledge back to Australia, which could help with my career goal to become a professional soccer player,’’ he said.

Council officers in Melbourne’s north-west who enforce dangerous dog laws are being threatened on social media websites. Commander Jeff Forti of the North West Region, which includes Whittlesea, said police were investigating.

Wages paid back A Thomastown building company has paid $23,622 in back pay after underpaying two labourers for almost two years. The Fair Work Building and Construction body found the employer had made a mistake and back-paid the workers voluntarily.

Police seek help Police are seeking witnesses to a crash in Beveridge that claimed the life of a local man last Monday. They believe two Beveridge men argued at the Beveridge Tavern about 4.40pm before leaving in separate cars. Just after 5pm, a white 1996 Mazda utility with steel tray hit a power pole near Old Sydney Road. The driver, 40, died at the scene.

The squad that leaves for Italy this month at training at the RMIT ground in Bundoora Jonathan Alcorace, 15, of Greenvale, has already tasted Italian soccer, playing for Campania, near Naples, when his family lived there for a year. ‘‘I’m ready to use my gift of both feet and speed to create a pathway to playing soccer for a professional team at a high level,’’ he said.

The other players are Jonathan’s brother Lucas, 13, Tyler Carlucci, 13, Dion Forgione, 16, twins Jake and Luke Parisi, 16, Josh Rabie, 12, and Nick Vouloumanos, 15. Genova will run an open session at RMIT, Plenty Road, Saturday, September 8, at 10am.

BY SUE HEWITT THE secret life of plants will be revealed in the latest iTunes U course offered through La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus. The university is the first in Australia to provide course content on iTunes, allowing a worldwide audience to access lectures and course material through the Apple iTunes platform. It has added the first-year subject, plant science, to iTunes by offering lectures and readings every week during the second semester. In the past semester, La Trobe offered six courses on iTunes and had more than 100,000 subscribers with more than 2.3 million downloads of material, according to university spokesman Matt Smith. Whittlesea ratepayers are being hit by a $2.5 million bill to collect roadside litter. Council workers such as Pat Pavia and Merv Anderson (pictured) have to pick up wrappers, cigarette butts, packets and other litter. Council infrastructure manager Peter Ali said it cost a fortune to clean rubbish on roads and in public spaces. ‘‘This does not take into account the environmental, social or economic costs of degraded environments, and potential to injure wildlife and aquatic creatures,’’ he said. ‘‘If people stopped littering, council could put the money saved into improving infrastructure or enhancing community services. Reduced litter would also result in a healthier and more enjoyable environment to live, work and do business in.’’ He urged people to dob in litterbugs to the council.

COVERSTORY

Talk to

the

Sue Hewitt meets a woman on a mission to change the way we think about livestock n a heartbeat, the truck loses control, metal screeching on bitumen as it rolls, violently tumbling its cargo of terrified sheep. Skidding on its side, the truck smashes into the overpass guardrail, spilling sheep on to the highway about 10 metres below. The sickening cries of the livestock will soon be silenced. Of 400 animals, only one survives. ‘‘She is one lucky sheep,’’ says Pam Ahern, the woman who adopted the ewe, before correcting herself. ‘‘That sheep is a miracle.’’ Named after the ‘‘unsinkable’’ Molly Brown, a human survivor of the Titanic disaster, the sheep has cheated death twice. The truck was heading to the abattoir when it rolled on the Western Ring Road overpass at Laverton North on May 31. Witnesses recall it ‘‘raining’’ sheep on to the Princes Highway and cars below. Molly was found alive a day later and taken to the Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne, where surgeons repaired a gash to her head. She made international news, but after the spotlight faded, the question arose about what to do with an animal bred for the dinner table, not the backyard. Ahern had already faced and answered that question. In 2003, she set up Edgar’s Mission, a sanctuary for

neglected and unwanted farm animals, named after her first rescued pig, Edgar Alan Pig. Edgar was bought as a piglet for a photoshoot with actor and animal activist James Cromwell, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Farmer Hoggett in the 1995 hit movie Babe. He joined Ahern and other animal lovers in a campaign to improve the treatment of farmed pigs, but after the publicity the group had to find a home for Edgar.

It seemed natural for Ahern to turn her hobby farm into an animal sanctuary. Edgar became the founding resident and ambassador, walking Melbourne’s streets on a lead and visiting schools until his death in 2010. ‘‘Edgar really changed everything. Most people have a special animal in their hearts, mine just happened to be a pig,’’ says Ahern. ‘‘But it was not enough to save one animal when, in 100 years’ time, people will still be doing the same senseless things to farm animals unless you educate them.’’ So Ahern quit he job as a factory hand at a chocolate plant in Broadford and set up the not-for-profit mission. The sanctuary is on 24 hectares at Willowmavin, outside Kilmore in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. About 2000 people, including about 30 school groups,

visit by appointment each year, while Ahern takes her mobile farm to another 30 schools. ‘‘I never charge for anything because I believe in the power of kindness,’’ she says. ‘‘We don’t want the work we do to be cost-prohibitive, and we don’t want to put a dollar figure on a life-changing experience. Somehow, we get by on donations.’’ The sanctuary is home to 250 neglected or unwanted livestock and it is their stories, told along a ‘‘kindness trail’’, that Ahern hopes will change the way people treat livestock and all animals. Chickens, goats, cows, horses, sheep, a handful of dogs and Percy the dumped peacock are among the animals whose purpose at the sanctuary is to teach.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY TEAGAN GLENANE

‘‘The greatest challenge is to get people to think,’’ says Ahern. ‘‘The choices we make, like buying cheap eggs, make farmers decide how the animals are treated.’’ She says the plight of most livestock, from caged chickens to failed racehorses, mostly goes unnoticed, but Molly the sheep’s story resonated with the public. ‘‘People everywhere were touched by Molly’s plight but millions of other farm animals aren’t that lucky,’’ Ahern says. ‘‘Molly’s wonderful story lives on and it will be told when people come to see her. I am personally touched by her ability to survive and her capacity to forgive humans and what they have done to her.’’ When Molly arrived at the mission, she was greeted by Timmy, who was found by a roadside as a week-old lamb in 2007 and was nursed by Ahern’s fireside. The two sheep bonded but Molly was scared of people. ‘‘She was terrified by humans but has slowly learnt to trust us,’’ Ahern says. ‘‘Now Molly comes up to you and eats out of your hand.’’ As if on command, the sheep with the ‘‘Zorro’’ scar on her forehead appears and accepts a Weetbix. Molly and Timmy follow as we walk around the farm learning the other residents’ stories of hardship and hope. Captain Midnight was a backyard chicken who grew into a rooster, much to the annoyance of his owner’s suburban neighbours. But at Edgar’s Mission he struts his stuff along with fellow roosters, the Two Ronnies, whose vocal abilities also resulted in them being dumped. ‘‘For every laying hen born there is a dead rooster; they have no value as a production animal,’’ Ahern says. A lack of commercial value meant Samson the horse was abandoned as a colt. His sire was unknown and his mother was taken away to feed a more valuable

thoroughbred foal. Samson came to the sanctuary last year, along with Monty, a miniature pony dumped because he was ‘‘not miniature enough’’, and Misty the one-eyed horse, who was heading to the knackery before she found a new home at the mission. Dotted along the so-called kindness trail are quotes such as this one from French writer Antoine de SaintExupery: “Many have forgotten this truth, but you must not forget it. You remain responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.’’ Several of the 44 tame piglets used to play Wilbur in the film Charlotte’s Web also live at Edgar’s Mission. Burpy walked the red carpet at the movie’s world premiere at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre with Hollywood star Dakota Fanning. In 2006, he was about the size of a small cat. Now he weighs more than 300 kilograms.

Another “Wilbur’’ is Mrs Peaches, who doesn’t let her 320-kilogram bulk stop her getting up close for a scratch. I am taken aback when this very big pig purses her lips and greets me. ‘‘Ooohwah,’ she says, then bows, adding, ‘‘Brrhup’’. ‘‘She’s actually talking to you,’’ Ahern says. ‘‘People come here and say that they can go to a zoo to see exotic animals, but they have never met farm animals; never realised they have feelings.’’ I decide I must respond to Mrs Peaches, saying ‘‘Nggo’’. But obviously there is a translation error and I have unwittingly said ‘‘bacon’’. Mrs Peaches demonstrates her disgust by turning her big rump towards me and urinating. A treat saves the day and there is Ahern scratching the giant porker, who sits like a dog begging for more. Aside from former Hollywood stars, there are pet pigs who outgrew their suburban backyards. ‘‘There are no real miniature pigs in Australia,’’ she says. ‘‘All breeds grow to hundreds of kilograms.’’ But it’s not only rescued pets that find their way to the farm. Farmers themselves are bringing their former charges. “The great chicken rescue’’ began in the second week of July with a phone call from a retiring farmer,

who no longer had the stomach for caging chickens to meet the demand for cheap eggs. Hundreds of chickens arrived for rehabilitation. All but a few ‘‘special needs’’ birds have been adopted out as pets. ‘‘See how they lift their feet, afraid to put them down? They have never walked before,’’ says Ahern. She lifts a chicken up in a hug, holding its feet and embracing it to her chest. ‘‘This girl’s neck feathers have been worn off when she has been sticking her neck through the wire to feed,’’ she says. As part of the mission’s education campaign, Ahern takes a wire cage measuring about a metre square to schools and invites several children to squeeze inside. ‘‘Then they know what it is like to be a caged hen,’’ she says. ‘‘If you say it’s only a chook and it doesn’t matter, then it doesn’t take much more for you to say it’s only a black person, only a woman, only a Jew. Once we say only, our hearts shut down to another being and we can excuse senseless violence. The greatest obstacle is getting people to think.’’ Ordinary citizens are starting to offer help. A Whittlesea resident who found a newborn lamb by the roadside, its umbilical cord still attached, took him to the vet. Now living at the mission, the lamb is an energetic ball of fleece with gammy front legs, twisted during a difficult birth, but they are growing stronger and straighter. He is called Alan Marshall, after the author of I Can Jump Puddles, the story of his childhood growing up with a disability. ‘‘The saviour of Alan was a testament to the human heart; someone was driving along and saw an animal in need and stopped to help,’’ says Ahern. She says it is the animals who will help educate the public. ‘‘We don’t preach. We let people see farm animals as living beings and let them decide,’’ she says. ‘‘I truly believe no one would willingly wish to cause an animal harm; we just don’t think about the consequences of our choices.’’ ■ Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary will host a World Animal Day event on Sunday, October 7. Other visits are by appointment only. Details: edgarsmission.org.au.

was a big gap in the service provision for those dispersed by the fire,” Jeffs says. “A substantial proportion of people have not returned to the fire-affected areas and we couldn’t get to meetings, or network with our previous groups.” Jeffs says the most efficient way of engaging with these people is online, where information can be publicised via social media and reached by anyone, anywhere. She says there are many ways to talk about the idea of a front door that will get people thinking about their situation. “It’s a non-threatening image and it doesn’t mention the fire,” she says. “It’s not about the fire, it’s about where you are now.” According to Jeffs, the leading media paradigm has been around people rebuilding in fire-affected areas. ‘‘There’s not much about how people have moved away and how that might

have been good for them or bad for them,” she says. “I’ve moved away and my life is much better now. I’ve been here [in Heidelberg Heights] for a year and a bit and it does now really feel like home. ‘‘I’ve put my stamp on the property. Mine is a positive story.” The Front Door Project has also allowed Jeffs to spread her creative writing wings, something she’s been doing more of since making a book of remembrance for her sons. “Poetry has been a really amazing thing for me,” she says. “Not only has it allowed me to express myself creatively for the first time in 20 years, but I’ve made a whole new network of friends in Melbourne who have been very important in terms of showing my artistic soul and just people to hang out with. ‘‘I feel like I’m embedded in my community.” ■

im Jeffs’ front door is surrounded by colour, down to the fragile stained glass that encompasses the top panel. A “Home” sign is attached alongside it and when Jeffs closes the door behind her, she feels safe in her Heidelberg Heights house. But more than just the entrance to her home, the door represents a haven where she and her two sons can start anew after losing everything, including their Kinglake West home, in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. Jeffs uses this analogy as the basis of her online Front Door Project (frontdoorproject.wordpress.com), which she hopes will reconnect people whose lives were affected by Black Saturday and anyone else who has survived a bushfire experience. “Six months after the fire, it became quite clear to me and a number of my friends who were fire-affected that there

Interested in Left politics in Australia and whether its future lies with the relationship between the Labor Party and the Greens? Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt and Labor MHR for the ACT seat of Fraser, Andrew Leigh, will discuss the issue with La Trobe University’s professor of politics Robert Manne. Professor Manne said since the August 2010 election Labor and the Greens had found themselves ‘‘in a situation of mutual dependency and political combat’’. ‘‘Such a situation is novel in Australian politics and fraught with great difficulty. The question is are Labor or the Greens, enemies or friends?’’ The debate will be at the John Scott Meeting House, La Trobe University, Bundoora Campus, Wednesday, September 5, from 12.30-2pm. ustralian skiing champion Steve Lee once told journalists his top tip: never turn your skis. To do that is to admit defeat, advised the World Cup winner. But different situations change one’s style. I savour the words of one of Falls Creek’s most famous residents as I’m about to drop in to a rolling, untouched valley from the top of Shangri-La – a peak to the side of the main Falls Creek ski area. Lee was schooled at Falls Creek Primary, and raised by hoteliers at the Attunga Hotel, which still maintains his cabinet of trophies and named its bar after him. The slopes of Falls gave Lee the taste for speed that sent him on to compete in downhill skiing World Cups and the Winter Olympics in the ’80s and ’90s. Who better to take us to the secret spots on the mountain that we would otherwise have to hike to? Spending the morning on Lee’s tour brings memories of European skiing. Admittedly, Australian conditions don’t often deliver 30 centimetres of dry, cold powdered snow but on a bright blue-sky day such as this, even a small dusting of fresh snow is enough to get the feeling. My group of four, guided by Lee and his daughter Layla, are zipped to the top of Shangri-La on a specially built sled pulled by a Ski-Doo, so we can ski, snowboard shred

and swoosh down to a pickup point at the bottom. Rewind, repeat. ‘‘Right now, this is my playground,’’ Lee says, speaking about an area where plans to build a new lift stalled after the Kennett government lost power. What is always an exciting trip to Falls is enhanced by Lee’s effortless charm, camaraderie with his daughter, and his need for speed. Lee’s tour ($159, ski pass needed) soon advances from Shangri-La to the top of Mount McKay, where breathtaking views of Mt Feathertop, the Kiewa Valley and even Mt Hotham (on a clear day) are up for grabs. We are led from the old communications shed at the summit down untouched terrain past great curls of windblown snow and sleeping forests to a cat track and, finally,

Falls Creek Country Club

back to the Ski-Doo. This fantastic tour came at the end of an action packed weekend of snow and good food at Falls. Our group stayed in a fourbed apartment with kitchen at the Falls Creek Country Club ($1140 per weekend in peak season), which was pine-furnished and plushly upholstered with enough room for a family. Down the road, nestled between snow tracks and gums, Winterhaven lived up to its name. Barry Iddles’ restaurant serves hearty dishes with superb flavours that are perfect for sub-zero temperatures. Grilled scallops with smoked pineapple and chilli relish ($16.50) deliver a heat kick and expand flavour horizons with Vietnamese mint and thyme. We also try the three cheese fondant with beetroot

Steve Lee guides the group into the unknown

carpaccio ($16), which is lighter than it sounds. Main dishes such as a yellow duck curry, pork belly and poached chicken breast sound familiar on the menu, yet chef Marcus Levy turns the flavours inside out. An eye fillet ($39.50) is served with creamy thyme polenta, sugar-baked tomatoes and two tiny smoked garlic cloves. The meat is tender, cooked rare, with added nuttiness from the smoked garlic. The lamb shoulder ($36) is a rich cut of meat with flavours highlighted by mint yoghurt and a chick pea smash. As the snow falls outside, a dessert of chocolate fondant with salty caramel and a dome of lavender ice cream arrives at the table, followed by a cheese plate of fine cheddar, blue and camembert from the nearby King Valley. The cheese is served with figs preserved with

peppercorns and crispy crackers. The fondant is a hit, the lavender a cooling influence on the rich chocolate and caramel. This year Falls Creek had a snow dump late in the season taking cover to a reported 170cm All the lifts were open at the end of August, and the terrain parks had a good base to mould kickers from. Getting to Falls takes about 4.5 hours by road, resort entry costs $39.50 per car per night, ski passes are $106 for adults or $185 for a weekend in high season. Lee keeps a Facebook page and Layla reports regularly on the conditions and weather outlook. ■ Details: visit facebook.com/SkiingWit SteveLee. Dan Moss travelled a a guest of Falls Creek Resor

★★★★★ OFFSPRING SEASON THREE Madman Entertainment, $39.95 Finally, there’s another great Melbournemade comedy-drama series so we can stop comparing everything to The Secret Life Of Us. The joy of Offspring is its fab Fitzroy locations, quality scripts, sharp production values and truly original voice. What’s not to like? It’s now series three and we’re pretty familiar with the setup. Scatty, endearing obstetrician Nina Proudman (Asher Keddie) is head over heels for fellow doctor Patrick (Matthew Le Nevez) – but can the bliss last? Pretty soon Nina’s apartment burns down and she discovers that dad Darcy (John Waters) is not her biological father. Much hand-wringing and slapstick ensues. Neurotic Nina may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the show is full of guts and heart and, despite an overly saccharine conclusion to this series, there is plenty to enjoy along the way. Look out for scenestealing supporting work from musician Clare Bowditch, a clearly pregnant Kat Stewart and the radiant Deborah Mailman. The good news is another two series have been commissioned, cementing Offspring’s place as a modern Aussie classic. – Michael Harry

album ★★★★ NAS

Life is Good, Def Jam Recordings Discussing new Nas albums has been fraught with danger ever since the New York rapper released his debut album Illmatic in 1994. That ground-breaking record is generally considered one of the best in hip hop by any critic with a passing interest in the genre, but it has been hard for Nas to live up to since. Thankfully, new album Life is Good, his 10th, is hugely enjoyable and something of a return to form after a number of indifferent albums. Featuring several producers, Life is Good showcases a range of styles. Stay is one of the most gorgeous songs Nas has done, his rapping drifting effortlessly over reflective horns and piano. The track preceding it, The Don, goes as hard as any hip hop you’ll hear this year, while A Queens Story finds Nas as aggressive and hungry as he has been in years. – Daniel Paproth

ne of the dangers of adapting a television show into a film is that audiences will feel they’re just watching a couple of episodes back-to-back. Foxy ladies Kath and Kim have been small screen fixtures since 2002, and confidently make the jump with Kath and Kimderella, a sort-of bogan fairytale. Self-proclaimed hornbag Kath is still married to Kel, a purveyor of fine meats, but the spark has gone out of their marriage. By chance, Kath wins a trip to Italy but it’s Kim, her spoilt daughter, who comes with her, leaving husband Brett and daughter Epponnee Rae behind. Second best friend, Sharon, tags along. The film wastes little time going over old ground, quickly taking the audience - and the the girls - to the fictional Italian town of Papilloma, where Kath and Kim get swept up in the world of royalty, corruption and discount designer fashion. Working Dog’s Rob Sitch plays the slimeball King, who has the hots for Kath and fine leather shoes. Sitch and his wig both do a superb job impersonating Julio Iglesias. Richard E. Grant is the only actor not from the original series to have

O

a major part in the film, playing aying a royal page, and that’s just fine because ecause Kath, Kim, Sharon, Brett and Kell have enough personality to fill up an IMAX MAX screen. There’s no doubt much about this film is ridiculous - the location tion and storyline is far away from Fountain Lakes and any semblance of reality, but its heart is still relatable. e. The relationships between the characters grounds the film m and stops it from being too o over-the-top. If you’re familiar with the he series, then you’ll recognisee the humour, and many of it’s t’s sayings are famous for a reason. eason. Kath and Kim’s greatest strength rength is their clever use – and abusee – of language. In the hands of eastern suburbs snobs Prue and Trude, ude, it’s verbal acrobatics. If you’re already a fan, then hen you’ll get a giggle out of Kath ath and Kimderella. If not, you’ll u’ll probably hate this film. It isn’t sn’t a classic, but it’s a fun romp. p. reporter Alex Burchill is happy to oblige. All the familiar faces from the first series – including Kim Gyngell as Sun editor Howard Evans, Beth Buchanan as Alex’s Alex s on-off girlfriend Rita, and loyal photographer

sidekick Bob (Paul Denny) – return, as does Geoffrey Rush as the deadpan narrator. Episode one revolves around a political scandal, as Alex finds himself in possession of A sexually explicit photos of the conservative expl Minister for Families, passed over by her creepy disgruntled boyfriend Frank (Clayton disgru Jacobson). To T publish or not to publish? Do you really need ne to ask? While the show throws a few barbs at tabloid newspapers and egocentric journalists news (Alex has his home address on media lists, he explains, ‘‘in case I get sacked, so I still get invites to opening nights’’), Lowdown isn’t ope exactly Frontline-level satire. But where the Fron show shines is in its character comedy; the dysfunctional dysfunctiona relationship between Alex and Rita, the strange bromance between Alex and stra Bob and the oddballs who drop by. There are a couple of laugh-out-loud moments in the t first episode but by and large, Lowdown is just as warm and engaging as it is funny. The only question: after so much Zwar on q our screens this year, can you handle another t eight weeks? My answer – where do I sign? Thursday, ABC1, 9.30pm

and fine texture. I can’t express how important structure is for pinot noir; it is all too often neglected, but here it is, fine and mouth-coating. There is a slight bitter note that is lost with the first bite of food. This is delicate and savoury and designed for food.

2008 Liberty Chardonnay, $29 Charlie and Ivka do everything at the winery, from building to pruning and, of course, making the wine. Everything is done by hand. It is a small property, around eight acres, and every Wednesday they make the drive to Melbourne to deliver their wares to restaurants. They also grow truffles, but that’s another story.

This has a delightful perfumed nose accompanying ripe fruit notes. It is not green or herbaceous yet it speaks of freshness. On the palate the wine is all finesse, tight fruit, sherbet, lemon and lovely fresh acidity. This is unmistakably sauvignon blanc, but it seems regal, comfortable, full and generous.

n Australia we have the luxury of great wine. We have almost every style and flavour of grape and the lengthening list of labels leaves little room for improvement. The challenge for wineries is getting into the public view, such is the wall of wine we are confronted with. A winery I have great fondness for is Chestnut Hill in West Gippsland, just right of the Yarra Valley, near Gembrook. I first tasted these when I was working in restaurants 10 years ago. They excited me then and they do today. In 1985, childhood sweethearts Charlie and Ivka Javor planted the Chestnut Hill vineyard, having left Croatia to find a better future.

2010 Pinot Noir, $29 I’m embarrassed to say it has been years since I have seen the pinot. It has an ethereal colour, hardly obscuring your vision through the glass. The nose is all ripe strawberry and spice. The palate shows that same fruit and delivers a tight

This is the wine I remember most – chardonnay from another world, or so it seemed when I first tasted it. Now I see a wine of almost unique elegance. For an Australian chardonnay with four years on its side to be this fresh is a treat. It is packed with flavour, without overzealous oak or fashionably lean and mean acid lines. This is a beautifully balanced wine, with fine notes of talc, understated nuttiness, clean acidity with terrific length and structure that leaves you licking your lips. There is very little embellishment from Chestnut Hill, but the addition of ‘‘Liberty’’ on the label tells the simplified tale of the journey of Charlie and Ivka. “Liberty is a gift that we never experienced in our homeland,’’ says Charlie. ‘‘We came to Australia and found it.” ■

MOTORING

Running on empty How a drought drives up fuel prices

ROD EASDOWN BEHIND THE WHEEL aybe you’ve seen the pictures of US President Barack Obama inspecting some very sorry-looking Iowa cornfields. They’re in the midst of a drought over there, the worst since 1956, and that much-depleted corn crop is causing waves right across the car industry. Yep, the car industry. People in the US worry about their high dependence on imported oil to run their pickups and sport utility vehicles. That’s because lots of these imports come from countries that don’t have much time for US foreign policy. If those countries turned off the taps ... well, maybe it’s best not to go there. So the Americans have been adding ethanol

M

to petrol to reduce their dependence on imports – around one part ethanol to nine parts petrol, and they’re lifting that little by little, year by year – something the car-makers who provide warranties on their engines aren’t happy about. The ethanol comes from corn and it takes a great deal of corn to make up 10 per cent of the petrol used in America. This year the forecast is for 50 billion litres of corn ethanol. That’s 4.7

billion bushels of corn, or 40 per cent of the crop. The US has a long history of corn production and corn finds its way into a surprisingly high proportion of food products. We’re not just talking about deep-fried corn dogs at the Idaho State Fair. Apart from products such as corn bread and corn meal, there’s stock feed. Until the ethanol legislation came along in the guise of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, practically all US corn went into the food chain, some of it going to food aid for Third World countries. Since then, and especially this year with the corn crop being so depleted, fuel makers and the food industry are competing to secure supplies. This is driving up the price of both fuel and food. Corn futures prices on the Chicago exchange have risen 60 per cent since mid-June and are at record levels. It’s not just corn. When stock feed prices go up, prices of stock products follow. Critics of the ethanol legislation (there are lots, but they don’t include President Obama) say ethanol production is inefficient. Factor

in the extra energy used during farming and you’re not saving a thing. They reckon the environmental benefits of ethanol are nil and it hasn’t lowered the country’s dependence on imported fuel by one litre. They say the government should drop compulsory ethanol, or at least make the content level flexible. The cattle ranchers agree; the corn farmers disagree. Maybe the Americans could look to Brazil. They’ve been using sugar ethanol for years and have a flexible policy, allowing the market to determine if sugar winds up in food or fuel. Whatever, there is much for local legislators to note here. ■

Not just a pretty face Location, style and space add up to family friendly retreat

STEPHEN A RUSSELL PROPERTY WRITER hen you arrive at 3 Ancona Drive in the heart of sought-after Rivergum Estate the first thing that strikes you is how attractive this property is. The large, brown brick facade has a plethora of tall windows and a front door framed by grand pillars. The picture-perfect front yard includes topiary in a raised garden with red wood chips and pale pebbles.

W

The front door opens to a broad hallway of timber floorboards. Cream walls which reach two storeys form a vast, light-filled atrium. An open-plan study is to the left and a large formal lounge to the right. The lounge is awash with natural light from four large windows and enjoys luxuriously thick, cream-coloured carpet underfoot. The house opens up to a huge living area with a communal meals area at its hub and a cosy family lounge to one side. Patio doors lead out to a raised, covered deck perfect for alfresco dining. The massive kitchen at the rear of the house is in a large horseshoe formation. Dark benchtops rest on warm-hued cabinetry. rangehood. A clever corner pantry with folding doors opens to reveal a TARDIS-like space. There’s also a spacious laundry, off of which sits a powder room, direct access to the double garage and a sunroom with patio doors leading to the well-kept garden. A row of swaying palm trees lines the back fence, with a lemon tree in one corner, and a sail-covered deck in the other. There’s also a lock-up shed. Upstairs are four bedrooms, each with elaborate railings overlooking the atrium above the front door. Two large bedrooms feature built-in wardrobes with sliding white wooden doors. A third bedroom is on the other side of an immaculately well-appointed bathroom with

large, square black tiles underfoot and a deep spa raised on a white-tile dais and a separate shower. It’s the main bedroom that really impresses, with thick, soft carpet underfoot and plenty of space for mum and dad to retreat from it all. Tall windows on two sides reveal fantastic views over the tree tops to distant hills. A walk-in wardrobe in one corner offers plenty of rooms for his and hers glad rags, while an expansive en suite has a large shower, double vanity and large wall-mounted mirror decorated with an elaborately-patterned tile frame. This house is a real treat with gorgeous attention to detail throughout, and plenty of room for a family. There’s a charm to it that’s ready for you to move in and enjoy. ■

WOLLERT ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

Stockland is working in partnership with VicRoads to upgrade the Epping, Craigieburn and Lehmanns Roads intersection at Wollert. Works began on 11 July 2012 and are expected to be completed by December 2012. Traffic diversions during construction include: • Epping Road is open to traffic at all times • Craigieburn Road East will be closed to traffic from Brick Makers Drive to the intersection of Epping Road • Craigieburn Road East will remain open to local traffic only. Vehicles are advised to use either Donnybrook Road or Cooper Street to travel between Epping Road and the Hume Freeway. Motorists should allow extra travelling time to allow for speed restrictions, detours and necessary road closures.
