china bar buffet takes temptation to fabulous heights

I

T’S impossible to sample all the delicious offerings at Epping’s China Bar Buffet in one sitting, but it’s tempting to try. As I sit down, the pungent aromas and sound of the teppanyaki chefs preparing sizzling stir-fries adds to the warm, inviting ambience. The secret to surviving a buffet is to sample what you desire in small portions. But even then it’s hard to choose where to start – there are many offerings and the buffet is spread throughout the restaurant.

I start with some freshly prepared sushi and sashimi, a small serving of crispy soya chicken and succulent salmon with lemon sauce. Luckily, I have brought a “food accomplice” with me. He starts with chicken and sweet corn soup and delicious steamed chicken dumplings. I move on to herbal chicken soup and tasty pan-fried pork dumplings. For mains, the selection includes stir-fries, curries, fried spring rolls and potato strips, an

impressive seafood bar and an array of salads. We opt for tangy lemongrass chicken, fresh prawns, baked oysters, coconut rice, stir-fried mixed vegies and stir-fried scallops in special royalty sauce. We’ve left room for some of China Bar Buffet’s delectable petite desserts – silky wildberry panna cotta, white and dark chocolate mousse and orange slice, plus a side of fresh fruit salad. But the chocolate fountain is the biggest hit

– select a fruit-flavoured ice-cream or thread some marshmallows on to a skewer and dip it in the fountain. Finish with sprinkles or lollies for a magnificent chocolate hit. \

or top brands in fashion and homewares at discounted prices, there is a secret everyone should be in on: Trade Secret. The Broadmeadows store, one of 30 such stores around the country, sells big-name brands every day at up to 60 per cent off other stores’ prices. All the products are genuine first-quality – there are no seconds or samples. But because they’re sold for much cheaper than competitors’ offerings, the brands can’t be advertised – that’s why the business is

called Trade Secret. To achieve the store’s signature low prices, the team of buyers deals directly with top-brand fashion houses and suppliers, here and overseas, to negotiate great deals on current-season fashion and homewares – and then passes the savings on to customers. At the heart of everything the business does is a desire to surprise its customers – and the prices and brand range certainly deliver that. There’s something for everyone: new-season women’s, men’s and children’s clothing,

underwear, footwear and accessories, and homewares. The Australian company opened its first store on the Gold Coast in 1992. Its newest store opened in November last year at the Spencer Outlet Centre in Melbourne. The Broadmeadows store, which opened last September, has a young and dedicated team happy to help customers with requests or find a needed product. And new stock arrives every day, so amazing discoveries can be made on each visit. Trade Secret is also a silver partner of the

rom humble beginnings working alongside their late father in the garage of the family home to now manufacturing top-notch games tables, Dynamic Billiards owners Domenic and Vince Ancora have kept the skill of making billiard tables in the family. This year, the family-run business marks 40 years of crafting soccer, air hockey, arcade games, table tennis and poker tables and, of course, billiard tables – all to suit any home and budget. “It certainly has been an incredible journey for our families since those days in the garage with dad,” says Vince. “Both our wives and our sister still work in the business and each of our four children has also worked with us for stints through the years. There’s no doubt it’s been a family affair and we know dad would be unbelievably proud of our success.” To celebrate its 40th year, Dynamic Billiards is having a sale. Domenic and Vince are sure the cost savings and special upgrades will encourage new customers to come in and have a look at the vast range on offer. “Given our wide variety of billiard tables, there really is something to suit every budget,” says Domenic. “Some people come in and are excited to grab a bargain on floor stock.

“Others ask that we work with them to design a billiard table that suits their needs and style of their home.” The owners know it’s all about family and fun for all ages and playing abilities. “No matter their selection, being able to deliver the finished product to people and install it in their homes is the best part. etting in shape has never been easier with five-star One Health & Fitness in South Morang fitting the bill as a dynamic centre for looking and feeling better. The South Morang centre, which celebrates its fifth birthday this month, has undergone many improvements over the past 12 months, including creation of a Functional Training Zone and a Wellness Studio. But the centre hasn’t lost sight of its goal to welcome people of all ages and fitness levels, and to provide a clean, safe and non-threatening environment for members to achieve their health and fitness goals. “Our mission is to positively change the lifestyles of all our members by understanding their challenges and their aspirations, and delivering the highest level of service,” club manager George Kladis says. More than 70 group exercise classes are held every week, and One Health & Fitness provides unlimited access to Leisure City Epping. George recommends the 30-minute Smart FiT small-group training sessions at the Functional Training Zone. “If you’re looking at a very cost-effective way to enjoy the benefits of a personal trainer to fast-track your results, to increase your

The gentler side of fitness is also proving popular, with the dedicated Wellness Studio hosting more than 12 specialty classes every week, including Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga, meditation and foam roller classes. “It’s a great way to release the stress of everyday life.” \

upgrades have sports centre going for gold

T

he field of dreams is changing for the better, with renovations valued at more than $400,000 taking place at Leisure City Epping. The improvements at the word-class integrated sports, leisure and fitness centre will be noticeable from top to bottom, with Olympic-grade sports floors complementing the new nets, electronic scoreboards, wall art and lighting. Gerflor, which installed the same flooring for the London Olympics, has set the foundation using what it claims is the world’s best surface, while the upgraded lighting will create better visibility for players and spectators in the thick of the action. The renovations couldn’t have been timed better, with new seasons for netball, football and beach volleyball just around the corner. Many of Leisure City’s programs will also be expanded. One of Australia’s leading high-performance tennis coaches, Emma Doyle, has hand-picked many well-credentialled coaches to further enhance the MLC Hot Shots program, which is considered one of the nation’s best. “Everyone who plays in the sports stadium will be wowed by the transformation and also be among the first to experience what it’s like to play on the best sport floors in the

lip on the dance shoes and get ready to tango because Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon/evenings at Casavini Ristorante in Doncaster East are attracting young and old to old-time dinner-dance fun. A live band plays Italian classics as diners choose their favourite dishes from an authentic continental buffet, the mouth-watering food being especially selected and prepared by chef Michellino Interno. After enjoying a smorgasbord of pasta, roasts, risottos, antipasto, salads, fresh

seafood, fruit, cheese and desserts, it’s time to get on the dance floor for a flirtatious cha cha or graceful waltz – or put in a request to the bandleader for a favourite tune. This sophisticated venue has been doing its thing since 1988, the year it was established by Tony, Mary and Michael Mimmo. The Wednesday-to-Friday a la carte lunch and dinner is a treat, enjoyed at linen-dressed tables in plush, comfortable chairs. Stylish starters include gnocchi Casavini: homemade potato dumplings, pan tossed with

bacon, mushrooms, parmesan and cream sauce. Then move on to a main course of costolette di agnello: lamb cutlets brushed with oil infused with rosemary and sage, char-grilled and served with a sweet potato mash. Desserts include fritelle di mele: apples, sultanas, cinnamon and custard, wrapped in crepe, served with vanilla bean ice-cream. On a nice day, the paved courtyard with seating under umbrellas is a great spot to share a bruschetta and chianti with friends – and the wine list will impress. Yarra Valley,

New Zealand, Western and South Australian, Victorian regional and Italian wines have been chosen to complement the Italian food. Whether it’s an intimate dinner or a large function, Casavini is a young-at-heart golden oldie well worth exploring. \
