One scope, two views
‘‘Limited information’’: Moorabool Environment Group’s Deb Porter overlooks the site of the mine study.
A COAL mine could be up and running in Bacchus Marsh by 2018 following positive results of a scoping study. On Friday, mining partners Exergen and Mantle Mining announced the study found the project was economically viable and would generate substantial local employment. The project would require an initial capital investment of $2 billion and a mine life of more than 25 years. Exergen chief executive Trevor Bourne said the company planned to complete a feasibility study by the end of 2015. If it delivers positive results, and subject to success at a Latrobe Valley ‘pre-commercial demonstration facility’, production could start in Bacchus Marsh in 2018. The scoping study found the mine could
“It’s a very expensive project at $2 billion and it is difficult to believe it is economically viable when there are operational black coal mines in Queensland closing.” Mr Bourne said the study was a preliminary estimate based on limited information and more detailed analysis would be needed. “This study has confirmed that the Bacchus Marsh coal project has the potential to be profitable and bring major economic gains to the local community and the state of Victoria. “We are not talking about a token number of jobs but a very large number of well-paid permanent positions that would make a real difference to the local economy.” Mr Bourne said if the mine was approved, he hoped a ‘‘substantial proportion’’ of jobs would go to local people with the necessary skills.

generate an average of 900 direct construction jobs. This would peak at 1300 in the Bacchus Marsh and Geelong areas, including 400 permanent jobs at the mine and 90 at a $70 million continuous hydro-thermal dewatering (CHTD) plant to be built in the Latrobe Valley. But Moorabool Environmental Group’s Deb Porter, a vocal opponent of the mine, questioned the relevance of the scoping study. “My understanding is a scoping study is a conceptual plan, a hypothetical,’’ she said. ‘‘It has a poor level of accuracy as it’s based on very limited and incomplete information. “The community has strongly signalled to Exergen and Mantle that we don’t want a new coal mine in Bacchus Marsh and will continue to fight to prevent this and its associated public health, environmental damage and decreased property values, to name a few of the issues.

Tourism a meal ticket Bacchus Marsh Grammar students Ben Nogas and Caelan O’Rourke helped Mark Mills (pictured, centre) serve up some fine cuisine at a major tourism conference hosted by Tourism Moorabool. Last Tuesday’s conference at the school featured some of the industry’s heaviest hitters. Organisers said it was another sign that Moorabool was becoming a major player in Victorian tourism. As reported by the Weekly, local tourism continues to be a huge money-spinner, with the shire enjoying a 40 per cent rise in visits to the area in the year to March.
Drivers left to walk as sheriffs clamp cars BY BEN CAMERON NEARLY two dozen people have been nabbed by the Sheriff’s Office during a two-day roadblock in Bacchus Marsh. Twenty-three people and 264 warrants valued at more than $83,000 were processed during the operation in Wellington Road on October 10 and 11.
[ 4 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE
Twelve people were told their driver’s licence or vehicle registration would be suspended if they did not arrange to pay outstanding fines within seven days. These notices were issued against 150 warrants totalling almost $45,000. Eleven people paid their fines in full, finalising 34 warrants totalling more than $10,000. Sheriffs also clamped the wheels of 11 cars

associated with 134 outstanding warrants. Sheriff Brendan Facey said the operation should serve as a reminder that paying fines on time was the best way to avoid further penalties. “The earlier you pay your fine, the less you pay,” he said. “As this operation shows, if you ignore your fines, you will be caught. You are liable for your unpaid fines.
‘‘New technology to identify offenders and more targeted blitzes mean the Sheriff will find you.” The roadside operation identified people living in Bacchus Marsh as well as others visiting the area. While the Sheriff’s Office regularly targets offenders at home, last week’s roadblock was the first of its kind in Bacchus Marsh.

Car set alight Bacchus Marsh police are calling for witnesses after a crashed car was torched last Friday afternoon. A black 2009 Toyota Yaris was involved in a single-vehicle accident at 11.30am on October 19. A passing motorist noticed smoke coming from beneath the rear of the vehicle at 5.20pm. Police are also seeking information after alcohol and other property was stolen from Bacchus Marsh Baseball Club between 6am and 7am on October 16. The Masons Lane building is also used by cricket and Little Athletics clubs.

healthier eating options at work. WorkSafe director Pam Anders said it was difficult to draw a clear picture of Moorabool’s workingclass health from such a small test sample. ‘‘Moorabool has a small workforce and half of that number work outside the region,’’ she said. ‘‘But this should be a call to action

INBRIEF
Workers flunk health tests MOORABOOL’S blue-collar workers are risking their health with poor diets and dangerous levels of alcohol consumption, a new study has revealed. Eighty-seven manufacturing and construction workers in Moorabool took part in WorkHealth checks between April 2009 and April this year. Results released last week show nearly half of all men surveyed and a third of women drank alcohol at ‘‘risky levels’’. While the study captured only 1.6 per cent of the shire’s working population, it shows the average Moorabool male worker drank 3.3 standard drinks a day, while women drank 2.7 standard drinks. About 14 per cent of male workers were smokers, well below the state average (20 per cent). Nearly 90 per cent of those tested had an inadequate fruit and vegetable intake; almost 50 per cent of men and 25 per cent of females had high blood pressure; and one third of all workers had an above-average waist circumference. More than a quarter of men and one fifth of women were assessed as having a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. While the checks revealed men were unhealthier that women, more women assessed their own health as ‘‘poor’’. Lap Surgery Australia dietitian Laura Jones said employers needed to provide nutrition education programs for staff, particularly migrants and workers from lower socio-economic backgrounds. ‘‘There is a direct link between lower socio-economic status, lack

Rock-solid performers Talented Bacchus Marsh Grammar performers Caitlyn and Anabel will make their television debuts on Saturday. The grade 6 pupils will introduce several Melbourne schools as part of a three-week recap of the 2012 Rock Eisteddfod. Their school’s team (pictured) was a national finalist after taking out the J Rock Competitive division of the eisteddfod at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena in July. Performances will be screened on GO! from 2pm this Saturday, on November 3 and 10. Grammar’s community development co-ordinator Cathy Perconte said pupils and their families were very excited. ‘‘It’s been a very successful year and there may be more success still to come.’’ The national champion will be announced on November 10.

Community Western Water’s award-winning education program has been teaching children about water for years, and now the water authority is educating grown-ups too. Water Babies is a board book that is being distributed to families with newborn babies across the region. The book features colourful pictures and fun rhymes about using water around the home for babies and toddlers. On each page there is also information for customers about reducing water use, different payment options, and where to go for financial help if it’s needed. The Water Babies book is being distributed across the region by Maternal and Child Health Centres. Western Water is also helping create a new generation of water savers with the expansion and update of its education program for pre-school and primary-aged children. Students learn about the water cycle, water conservation and drinking water for health during a fun presentation that includes meeting our much-loved mascot, Sammy the Snake. At last, hoons get message BY BEN CAMERON TOUGH anti-hoon laws have made local roads safer, according to Bacchus Marsh police. New data reveals 126 cars have been impounded in Moorabool since the laws were introduced in 2006. Statewide, more than 20,000 vehicles have been seized. Also statewide, there’s been an almost 20 per cent increase in impoundments since tougher laws were introduced in July last year. Bacchus Marsh’s Senior Constable Darren Wyka said while most hoon drivers nabbed locally were men, their ages were a ‘‘mixed bag’’. ‘‘It’s not agespecific. Our main focus has been repeat offenders known to police. Some offenders are just people passing through. There has been a drop-off [in hoon behaviour]; people are more aware of the impounding procedures
‘There has been a drop-off; people are more aware of the impounding procedures in place.’ in place.’’ Senior Constable Wyka said burnouts around Bacchus Marsh and excessive speed on the Western Highway were the main reasons for cars being impounded locally. Seized vehicles can be sold or disposed of, while cars can be impounded for 30 days after a first offence and longer for repeat offenders. Police data shows young men make up 96 per cent of all hoon drivers caught statewide. Hume led the state in impoundments, with the cars of 1211 hoons seized since 2006.

This mum is sharing her cancer story with Andria Cozza to help others ebecca Vanson thanks her intuition for saving her life. After discovering a lump in her breast and beating cancer, she’s urging women to trust their judgment and always seek a second opinion. Next Monday is the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day, when people are asked to support the one in eight women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85. Mrs Vanson (pictured with son Lochie and daughter Rebecca) says she wanted to share her experience to highlight the importance of early detection. ‘‘I found a small lump as I constantly checked myself because I didn’t feel right,’’ says the former Melton resident, who now lives in Bacchus Marsh. ‘‘It was like I knew I had breast cancer but never thought it could happen to me.’’ In 2007, the mother of three had returned to work after maternity leave and was initially told the lump was mastitis. When a course of antibiotics proved to be of no use, she had an ultrasound. But it wasn’t until

a few months later, after another ultrasound, a mammogram and a biopsy, that a diagnosis of breast cancer was confirmed. After seeing a ‘‘whirlwind of doctors’’ she had chemotherapy. ‘‘I think I coped OK, but looking back I hope I never have to endure chemo again.’’ Radiotherapy followed before she received news that the cancer was under control. Mrs Vanson says she couldn’t have coped without the support of family and friends. ‘‘People say ‘make the most of life’ and ‘this must be a wake-up call’, but when I was going through treatment, I was so angry with life for doing this to me. Losing my hair was harder than losing a breast and until you are the person who goes through it, it is hard to imagine.’’ In remission, Mrs Vanson says she’s thrilled to be learning to live free of cancer. She urged all women to check their breasts regularly. ‘‘It only takes a short time to check yourself and it could be those five minutes that save your life.’’

Out of the library, up to the firefront BY BEN CAMERON

ANSWERING the call of duty at 3.30am is not standard practice for your average librarian. But Bacchus Marsh CFA volunteer Heather Vile wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s one of eight frontline female fireys protecting the town this summer, and she combines full-time work in Melbourne with keeping her community safe after hours. The 39-year-old is proudly following in the footsteps of her father, a brigade captain in the state’s northeast, and on her watch there have been a number of major incidents to attend. Like the time 1000 drums of agricultural fertiliser spontaneously combusted and burned for 11 hours. Or when Charlton was hit by floods in 2010, when many would argue a woman’s touch was invaluable in providing not only physical but emotional recovery. Ms Vile was part of a Bacchus Marsh strike team which helped residents with the tough job of removing
personal belongings from their waterlogged homes. ‘‘We saw the whole gamut of human emotions,’’ Ms Vile says. ‘‘People were so relieved to see us provide help. They were overwhelmed. They were like, ‘I can’t believe you’ve come all this way from Bacchus Marsh to help us’. ‘‘There was so much devastation, so much damage.’’ Ms Vile says the CFA is becoming more diverse by the day and the local brigade is always looking for more volunteers, be they men or women. Personally, she serves her town out of pride more than anything. ‘‘I just want to do my bit for the community,’’ she says. ‘‘I enjoy the camaraderie, too.’’ The CFA says there’s never been a better time for women to join a brigade, with the rollout of specially designed protective clothing that better suits their shape. The gear will progressively become available to the CFA’s 11,500 female members from this fire season.

Students from a Bacchus Marsh dance studio are preparing to take their skills to next year’s world titles. Abstars Commercial Dance Studio cleaned up at last month’s Australian All Star Cheer & Dance State Championships in Melbourne, claiming the grand champion banner as the highest scoring school overall. Its senior hip-hop team defends its title at this week’s nationals, then concentrates on the world championships in Florida next April. At the September 22 state event, the team took out its category for the fourth year in a row. Abstars students were also first in senior jazz, junior jazz, mini hip-hop and junior cheerleading divisions. The senior and junior jazz teams join the senior hip-hop squad at this week’s national championships in Sydney. The studio is looking for sponsors for the American trip. Details: 0419 898 423.

Jockey turned trainer Patrick Payne shares with Robert Fedele memories of the day 10 years ago when he won Australia’s greatest weight-for-age race.
I
t was the night before the big race. Patrick ‘Paddy’ Payne was winding down at home when the blower went. His old man was on the other end of the line, not unusual before a big meet. Patrick had assumed the call would bring words of encouragement. Instead it placed a tiny seed of doubt in his mind. ‘‘He just said: ‘Geez, you wouldn’t want anything to go wrong tomorrow. Everyone will be watching’.’’ While the choice of words was perhaps misplaced given the enormity of the following day’s events, Payne’s father was nevertheless right. Bang on, in fact. Everyone would be watching. They have done so in their droves since day dot, when the W.S Cox Plate was first run in 1922 at the tight-turning Moonee Valley track. There’s another notable race, about 15 furlongs up the road in Flemington, that stops a nation on the first Tuesday in November. But for the ever-shrinking loyal band of racing purists, nothing comes close to the Cox Plate for prestige and fascination. The Melbourne Cup is made up of a herd of slow-going handicappers who stick on all day. The Cox Plate boasts a select field of horses brimming with speed and courage. Comparing the two is like comparing cars. The Melbourne Cup is a Holden Kingswood. It’s big and reliable and will get you there, in the end. The Cox Plate is the equivalent of a Ferrari. Sleek. Exciting. Fast. The Melbourne Cup might be Australia’s greatest spectacle, but the Cox Plate is its greatest horse race. Payne knew the enormity of what was at stake. He’s known it since he was a child. ‘‘There was a lot of pressure,” he recalls. “I’d been watching this race since I was a little kid and you always thought it was too far out of your grasp to actually win it, so before the race I was really nervous. I thought this was a really live chance of winning.’’ Northerly, of course, had been there and done it all before. Nicknamed ‘‘The Fighting Tiger’’, he had taken out the Cox Plate a year earlier, in con-

troversial circumstances, when he saluted with Damien Oliver on board. Northerly won the race from glamour mare Sunline. Sandwiched between them and copping a buffeting in the straight from both horses was three-year-old Viscount – whose trainer John Hawkes is still seething that the protest was tossed out. While only a few doubted the win, 2002 would still give Northerly a chance to prove the win was no fluke. For Payne, who had ‘‘followed him a hell of a lot’’ from the sidelines, it would present his own opportunity at glory. ‘‘I admired the horse,’’ he says, eyes gleaming and voice stoking up. ‘‘He always looked healthy and well but he wasn’t the most beautiful-looking horse. He was just a plain-looking horse. He was well enough bred but he wasn’t regally bred. And sometimes in races he looked like he was the first horse ready to drop off and he was always the last man standing. ‘‘I’m sure Australians admired him for that. “That’s what Australians stand for. It doesn’t matter your background or what you look like. If you try and apply yourself you can get where you want to get.’’
Unusually, Payne had never ridden Northerly before the Cox Plate. He had a solid relationship with his West Australian trainer Fred Kersley, a trotting man who dabbled in gallopers and came across a special one. Payne reckons he could have ridden Northerly a couple of times in the early stages of his career but the stars never aligned. In racing, timing is everything. This time it was different. Journeyman jockey Greg Childs had just a week earlier steered Northerly to victory in the Caulfield Cup. But he was committed to Sunline, who had already given him two victories in the race, in the mare’s swan song on the track. Payne stepped in, ready for the challenge. Kersley, known as an astute trainer of few words, gave Payne no instructions and left the race up to him. ‘‘He knew I’d been watching this horse basically throughout his whole career. He knew I’d know how he should be ridden.’’ Northerly drew the middle marble and bounced in a forward position soon after the gates flung open. Sunline worked to the lead. Bel Esprit, who
would years later become even better known as the sire of Black Caviar, lobbed second. Northerly settled third early but soon stalked the mare for the rest of the race. ‘‘It worked out really easy,’’ Payne recalls. ‘‘My main worry was if he got back in the field and got stuck on the inside. When he was out in clear running, running second, I was really pleased.’’ Leading into the straight, Northerly’s staying power kicked in. ‘‘It’s Northerly going up to Sunline. They turn for home. The great West Australian Northerly’s got his head in front of Sunline,’’ roared race-caller Bryan Martin. ‘‘Northerly’s clear at the 100 metre mark ... Northerly’s going to do it back-to-back. Northerly takes the Cox Plate a length on the line.’’ Payne had been grinning 400 metres from home but was never one to go the early crow. ‘‘I’m never one to sort of count my chickens before they hatch, so I wanted to make sure I got the line first. He gave me a really good feel on the corner. ‘‘He wanted to lay in a little bit up the straight but on the line he could have gone another lap and it wouldn’t have worried him.’’ Payne, a self-confessed introvert, says he felt

INSIDESTORY more relief than euphoria after the race. The job had been done and he was content. He celebrated with family that night but truly soaked up the win the following day by himself. Northerly raced 11 more times for two more victories before being retired. He won 19 races in total and almost $10 million in prizemoney. He’s often talked about as one of the all-time greats. Payne too would retire a few years later, finally losing his battle with weight. He bowed out an 18-time Group 1 winner and his last ride was in a jumpers flat race at a nondescript country meeting. ‘‘There was more to life than dieting and being in the sauna,’’ he says. One positive, at least, is that Payne knew it was coming. While still riding he bought a 130-hectare property in Plumpton intending to become a trainer, just like his father before him. On a windy Wednesday afternoon he’s roaming the property in worn jeans and a plain white T-shirt. He’s softly spoken and accommodating. At 37 he retains his boyish looks. He’s a healthy 64kg now, still skinny, but a far cry from the 55kg he used to sweat to ride at. Payne has 60 horses in work, the bulk of them bought as part of a syndicate that selects young talent, trains them, then sells them to lucrative markets in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. ‘‘I think it’s important that once you retire you’ve got to find something to do to keep your mind occupied,’’ Payne says. ‘‘There’s good and bad parts about every job. Being a jockey you’re like a one-man band and you just have to worry about yourself and performing. As a trainer, we’ve got quite a few staff here and it’s more involved. ‘‘You’ve got to understand that an owner’s either bought or bred a horse, it’s lived until it’s a two-year-old and then they send it to you to train and entrust you to train it. So it’s a bit of pressure making sure that the horse gets to the races.” Payne isn’t worried about selling horses off overseas and it coming back to bite him. He’s happy making a quick quid and isn’t concerned about the glory these days. He’s starting to get a few more horses sent his way and says the ratio is evening out well. Still, he has no aspirations of becoming a champion trainer and is happy with his lot. ‘‘This farm lifestyle really suits me. I can train a horse in the morning and then muck
around on the tractor in the afternoon. I love doing what I’m doing. ‘‘It would be fantastic but I haven’t got any silly ambitions of being a champion trainer or anything like that. Basically it’s just enjoy life, enjoy the farm life here, train the horses to their maximum ability. If you get a good horse that’s fantastic, but I’ve got no real pipedreams.’’ As he poses for a photo in the famous gold and black silks, clutching the Cox Plate trophy, I bring up the fact Northerly died this year, aged 15, after a colic attack. ‘‘I heard on the radio that he got put down,’’ Payne says. ‘‘He was a great horse to me. He was a great horse to a lot of people ... but especially to me. He probably gave me my greatest moment in racing.’’ It’s been a decade since Payne and Northerly crossed the finish line in unison in the Cox Plate. Payne acknowledges he’s biased, but goes on to rank Northerly as one of the race’s best winners, up there with names like Surfers Paradise and Super Impose. ‘‘Ten years after, you think, it was still a great thing to have done. Even now I still get a good buzz out of it. ‘‘I’ve been watching this race since I was a young kid and thought I’d never have an opportunity to win it. ‘‘I like to go to Moonee Valley. It’s like a real theatre. When the bugle sounds and they come out on the track it always gives you a bit of a goose bump down your shoulders. And just to watch those horses from the 1000 metres onwards. They all pack up on the corner and it’s on for young and old.’’

Come clean on mining technology I am assuming that the unsigned web comment published on October 9, extolling the economic and environmental benefits to Bacchus Marsh of some unnamed and unmentionable technology, was sent by an Exergen and Mantle Mining shareholder. Or more likely a staff member or corporate executive, probably from a comfortable, city office. Those with the courage of their convictions would supply their credentials. Those of us who do not want any kind of new coal mining in our district are not a small minority but rather citizens who cherish clean air and an unspoiled landscape so vital for our orchards, our farmland and our way of life. Anyone describing a proposed open cut mine as an environmental benefit needs to name the unmentionable technology that they are promoting, look at the mess left by past coal mining and also to rethink their apparent opinion that we Marsh locals are suckers for snake oil sales. Some people would sell anything for economic gain. But many of us value more important assets.

Rhone ranger Ben Thomas samples Cotes of many colours
Love a bargain? ver noticed how good wines taste in their local setting? It seems especially true of wines sampled overseas. A few months ago my family and some friends rented a house for a week just north of Orange, deep in the heart of France’s Cotes du Rhone wine region. I have retasted a few of the wines we drank since I’ve been back. Memories of the holiday came flooding back and the wines tasted as good as I remembered. The Cotes du Rhone covers a huge area of southern France, from the Rhone River east to the Vaucluse-Luberon chain of mountains and from Avignon in the south to Vienne in the north. As in other French wine regions, there’s a hierarchy of wines, with the entry level being Cotes du Rhone. Village wines are the next level up in quality, and wines from specific villages sit at the top of the pile. Reds in the southern part, where we were based, are generally blends of grenache, shiraz, mourvedre and cinsault and the whites a mix of marsanne, roussanne and viognier.
E
While there are other grapes included in these blends, more often than not they are bit-part players. Maybe it was the hot weather, or the food, but I generally enjoyed drinking the entry-level Cotes du Rhone wines best. Not only were they the cheapest at cellar door, they were light and had a purity about them that some of the more expensive wines didn’t quite have. As the wines moved up in the pecking order they tended to become fuller-bodied and show more oak influence. It didn’t take long to find a balance between tasting wines and enjoying a holiday in the Rhone. Our days involved breakfast in the pretty town of Sainte-Cecile-les-Vignes, before a visit to a nearby village. Afternoons were spent meandering back to the house via wineries and cellar doors, trying to find the perfect wine to drink with dinner. I studied French until the end of year 11 and had an OK grasp of the language, although it’s rusty these days. I even summoned the courage to ask a few questions. Fortunately,
most winemaking terms are French, so I could get the gist of what winemakers were saying. It showed that even though communications were strained, they’re always keen to show you the inner workings if you show an interest. I was keen to visit Domaine Font de Michelle in the famous Chateauneuf-du-Pape region. It has an Aussie connection; thirdgeneration winemaker Guillaume Gonnet is married to a Sydneysider, and I’d heard good things about the wines. The GPS took us around the houses and what should have been a 20-minute trip took 40. We arrived a bit flustered but were greeted by Kelly Gonnet, who said: “My three-year-old Olivia is out the back with her grandmother. She’s never played with an Aussie girl before.” We left two hours later with a tuckered-out child and a great understanding of the Gonnets’ wines. The Font de Michelle wines are available in Australia. I’ve already found a few. ■
★★★★ Rive Droite Rive Gauche 2010 (Cotes-du-Rhone) $15; 14.5% Imported by the Prince Wine Store, where it sells for $12.50 when bought by the case, this is a blend of 60 per cent grenache, 30 per cent syrah,10 per cent mourvedre and cinsault. There’s a lot going on, with aromas of violets, cherry, raspberry, plum, liquorice and spice. There’s good depth and a touch of sweetness to the core of red and black fruit flavours, but it’s not confected or jammy. Fine sandy tannins and vibrant acidity are nicely balanced with the ripe, lingering flavours. Food match Duck rillettes

Bring out the welcome mat This home of almost 28 squares has been designed with family in mind, writes Carole Levy lthough it doesn’t announce its true size street side, this house has nearly 28 squares of living space, all of which is well designed to cater for a family that values both shared and separate downtimes. And it has just that bit extra to standard builds, such as subtly ornate cornices, a sunken rumpus room, in-wall sliding doors and superelegant window furnishings. The front door opens to an extra-long, tiled hallway with patterned floor tiles as a feature. At left is the main bedroom with bay window, walk-in fitted wardrobe and big ensuite with

twin vanity basins under a bulkhead and a heat lamp. Opposite is the study with triple-door storage and garage access; this could easily work as a fourth bedroom. Further on there’s a big, open, carpeted lounge room. Next door, accessed by in-wall sliders, is the step-down, carpeted rumpus room that opens to a very big, pitched roof pergola area (behind the garage) edged with greenery and paved in coloured concrete. Preceding the family hub, a tiled hallway ducks to two bedrooms with mirrored wardrobes, a laundry with storage, separate toilet and the main bathroom with blue and cream decor, a spa
and heat lamp. Near family sitting space and a meals area set in a wide bay window, the kitchen has a two-door corner pantry, loads of timberlook vinyl-wrap cupboards, a dishwasher, 900mm gas cooktop and a Delonghi wall double oven. The good-sized backyard has a Colorbond shed with roller door, a pebbled utility area, an L-shaped lawn and a mulched playground. Not far from St Catherine’s Primary School, Navan Park and Catholic Regional College, this well-presented property has plenty of bang for its buck.

A guide along life’s path Getting his own life on track led Charles Vella to help others improve theirs, writes Rebecca Miller nder his father’s influence, Essendon’s Charles Vella became a mechanical and electrical engineer. Later, though, his career took a turn, one towards helping others. Charles says his role as a life coach and clinical hypnotherapist is rewarding and satisfying beyond words. ‘‘Engineering is a satisfying career and can be rewarding, but to help a person achieve something they didn’t think they could or help them become unstuck is even more so’’. A self-help course led him to his new career. ‘‘I attended self-help courses to get my life on track. After a few, I achieved amazing results in my life — then I wanted to facilitate change for others,’’ says Charles. ‘‘After graduating from a neurolinguistic life coaching program in
U
2006, I went on to study clinical hypnotherapy.’’ He enjoys the personal satisfaction of helping people become unstuck. ‘‘My career allows me to help a person break free from whatever is holding them back.’’ He aims to improve an individuals quality of life, showing them how to achieve personal and business goals, get over unwanted behaviours and habits, let go of past traumatic events, relieve anxiety and quit addictions. ‘‘People generally seek help from me when mainstream medicine or psychology hasn’t worked and they realise their issue is within their unconscious control,’’ Charles says. He studied with Landmark Education, a course which started him on his journey of self-help and discovery.
‘‘Beyond Landmark, there is one man — hypnotherapist Steve Kormas — who taught me the craft of application, to apply neuro-linguistic program and hypnosis beyond the classroom, ’’says Charles. ‘‘My life is now a constant lesson learnt by helping one individual at a time.’’ Being happy and healthy in life is not just something Charles teaches; he practises it too. ‘‘I’m happy being me: a husband, father, therapist and someone’s friend. I visit the gym regularly, cycle with friends and enjoy spending time with my family and renovating my home.’’ Charles has advice for anyone interested in a career as a life coach: ‘‘Work from your heart, train with a craftsman and love what you do.’’

Last-ball lunge fails to spoil Melton’s day BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON squeaked home by one run against Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows to post a first-up victory in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west at MacPherson Park. Paul Halfhide held his nerve in the final over on Saturday, with RPB needing nine to win and eight to tie to keep the visitors to 8-201 in reply to Melton’s 7-202. On the final delivery of the day, RPB’s Lester Hethrage was called through for what would have been the match-tying run after Tyron Gamage failed to make contact, only for Melton to run him out.
Halfhide (3-37) was the best of the Melton bowlers, while Nathan Allen’s one wicket was the scalp of RPB top-scorer Tim Branagan (56). A steady harvesting of wickets kept Melton in the game after it fell 30 runs short of what captain Mick Allen considered a par score. Melton had reached 100 without loss batting first after Allen (57) and Michael Alexander (54) had opened with half centuries. ‘‘We thought it could have been a tough grind out there with the ball given it was a good batting wicket and the outfield was pretty fast,’’ Allen said. ‘‘We were off to a positive start, being 1-105 off 19, but there were too many dot balls in the
Riddell whips Sunbury tail BY TEO PELLIZZERI CAMERON Moran put Riddell in a dominant position and Heath Wadden did the rest as Riddell defeated Sunbury by 22 runs in McIntyre Cup at the weekend. The reigning Gisborne District Cricket Association premier capitalised as the overs ran out for Sunbury, running through the tail as it collapsed with 6-9. Moran made 95 out of 124 before being the third man out in the Riddell innings as the visitors to Clarke Oval posted 8-180 from their 40 overs. Sunbury reached 4-149 in reply, but Heath Boffey’s exit (27) at 5-149 was the first wicket in the collapse that ended the innings. Wadden claimed three of his 4-6 during the flurry of wickets. Earlier, Paul Newton was best of the Sunbury bowlers with 4-31. At Langama Park, Sunbury United’s economic bowlers ensured victory by 35 runs against Bacchus Marsh. Ryan Billinghurst posted 57 as United’s topscorer in a tally of 7-185, then Lyndon Dowsett’s 3-13 led the bowling as The Bulls were restricted to 9-150 in reply. Woodend (7-172) chased down Wallan (9-170) with three balls to spare, while Romsey (7-157) claimed regular Rupertswood wickets to leave the chasing team 102 all-out. In B grade, St Anthonys (114) made its modest total a winner by rolling Gisborne for 89. In C grade, Diggers Rest Bulla Village also successfully defended a modest total after bowling out Rupertswood for 98 in reply to 107. In F grade, Blackwood (4-179) put too big a total on the board for Woodend (5-124) to reach within the allotted 35 overs.

middle stages and we didn’t rotate the strike enough. We got 40 off the last five overs to scrape in for 200.’’ Melton is missing two of its pace attack, with James Wheelahan considered by Allen a 30-70 chance to make it back from an ankle injury this season. Former Australian quick Shane Harwood is expected to overcome a hamstring injury soon. Melton takes on Werribee at Chirnside Park in a one-dayer this Saturday. In second XI, Melton’s even spread of wickettakers made 6-151 as Roxburgh ParkBroadmeadows was all-out 127 in reply. Chris Hope (56) top scored for Melton, while
Ryan McLean took 3-28 as best of the Lions’ bowlers. In third XI, Melton won comfortably after Jarrod Kennedy (71) and Andrew Cristofaro (49) led a score of 7-220 batting first before Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows scored 8-134 in reply. Brad Challis (4-30) was best of the Melton bowlers. In fourth XI, Melton needed just 20 overs to post 3-89 after bowling out Roxburgh ParkBroadmeadows for 86. Mitchell Stephens took 3-9 to lead a bowling attack in which seven Melton players claimed a wicket.

Ties bind as club switches leagues BY TEO PELLIZZERI SUNBURY-based VAFA club Rupertswood has submitted an application to transfer to the Riddell District Football League. The Premier C outfit sees its future in the Riddell league after 13 years as a VAFA club. The VAFA has until Friday to consider a challenge to the league transfer, but the clearance appears a formality as The Weekly understands it will not stand in Rupertswood’s way. The Riddell league lost one of its junior clubs, East Sunbury, to the Essendon District Football League last year.
Rupertswood’s junior ranks already play in the Riddell District Junior Football League. ‘‘It’s [switching leagues] been in the background . . . and I think gained a bit of momentum this year,’’ Rupertswood club president Rob Morrice said. ‘‘The club went through a major review of our senior football to look at all aspects of it and came back with a recommendation. ‘‘The link between seniors and juniors is an important one. The players want to play against guys they’ve grown up playing against. ‘‘Travel is a major factor. We’ve had the situation where a number of junior
families will go and watch another game in Sunbury rather than travel with the team.’’ Rupertswood’s club review found that 102 senior-age players had left the club in the past three years. The Riddell league’s pull factors have motivated Rupertswood to apply for the switch. ‘‘We think the VAFA is very well run and we have enjoyed our years in the competition,’’ Morrice said. Riddell league general manager Rod Ward said the RDFL clubs had overwhelmingly supported Rupertswood’s application for inclusion at senior level. ‘‘Given Rupertswood is already a
member of the league it was a board decision. The board sought the clubs’ views and has now endorsed that application,’’ Ward said. ‘‘The reasons put forward for the clearance application were very strong.’’ Broadford has pulled off the recruiting coup of the Riddell league offseason by signing former Sydney premiership player Barry Hall. Hall, who will be 36 next season, played in the Ovens and Murray league for Wangaratta Rovers this season. The 289-game Saint, Swan and Bulldog returns to his junior club to play under friend and new coach Aaron ‘Skip’ Bray.
Imps grab for South’s jugular WILLIAMSTOWN Imperials threw down the gauntlet to Melton South in Williamstown District Cricket Association with a first-day declaration. The Imps sent Melton South in and bowled them out for 93 before scoring 6-146 off 35 overs and declaring. Melton South made it to stumps at 1-14, still 39 in arrears. Steady wickets stopped South generating any resistance in the first innings, with the biggest partnership 21 runs for the sixth wicket. Stuart Lowe (23) was the only batsman past 20 as Melton South was all out in the 34th over. Mitchell Woodyard (2-18) and Kane Teeken (2-32) were best of the Melton South bowlers. Dean Pirro (4) was out in the second dig for Melton South, with Leigh Edwards (1) and Chris Camenzuli (1) to resume on Saturday. In B1 Turf, Melton Centrals (212) is in command after bowling out Grand United for 81. Grand United survived one over of its second innings before stumps and will resume at 0-0 as it looks to avoid outright defeat.

Triples tantalisingly close as Darley finds form NERVOUS nineties was the only downside of a strong Darley batting display on Saturday as the home team posted 4-305 on day one of its Ballarat Cricket Association clash against North Ballarat. Just a week after posting 8-70
against Wendouree, Darley bats found form to command the first 80 overs. Tim Hughes (93) and captain Matt Cape (96) top-scored but came undone within reach of triple figures. Matthew Frew (34 no) and Brian Wheelahan (23) ended the innings to
give Darley’s bowlers plenty to defend on day two this Saturday. In Division 1, Ballan’s Craig Tooze hit 52 from No.7 to ensure the home team batted out the day against Burrumbeet. Cameron Dunne had earlier scored 49, but his dismissal at 6-113
left Ballan in danger of failing to bat out its overs. But Tooze and Michael Snaith (28) put on 41 for the seventh wicket before Tooze batted with the tail, last man out with the score on 199 after 79 overs.
