cover story Geelong premiership player Mitch Duncan is delighted to have been picked up from the west, writes PETER WILMOTH.

I

t’s Christmas in Geelong and Mitch Duncan couldn’t be happier. “It’s always an exciting time of year, the festive season, nice warmer weather and seeing the kids running around with Santa; it’s pretty special.” And to be spending Christmas Day in the city that has been so welcoming to the young man from Perth is special, too. “I love Geelong. It’s awesome,” he says. “I’m really enjoying my time here and plan to spend a lot of time this side of the country.” It would be hard to imagine a happier introduction to his new home town. Drafted by the Geelong Cats in 2009 – he was the club’s second selection – Duncan made his senior debut in the opening round of 2010 and in 2011 played in all but one game. And it was the last game of the season in 2011 – the grand final – in which every player’s fairytale came true for Duncan. Selected as a substitute for the game, he was brought on after forward James Podsiadly dislocated his shoulder. Duncan gathered 10 possessions and scored a goal late in the third quarter. The Cats won the game by six goals, and Duncan had scored a premiership medal in just his second year. He realises how blessed he is to be part of such an achievement so young. “Definitely. I think of players like (St Kilda veteran) Rob Harvey who hasn’t played in a winning grand final and how lucky I am to be a part of it in just my second year. It was a dream come true … It’s pretty surreal sometimes … I just want more of it, so hopefully there’s more to come.” Duncan grew up in Perth a star junior footballer dreaming of playing in the AFL. He had a feeling he would be moving interstate. “I kind of thought I wasn’t going to be in Perth for some reason. I don’t know why,” he says. “There were only two clubs there. I thought I’d probably have to move.” The adjustment to a new city was seamless. “I’m glad I did it. I stayed with an amazing host family for the first couple of years, the Ramondo family, who are pretty involved in the footy club and made the transition a lot easier. The club is like a new home once you leave your state.” As a boy he was an Essendon fan and admired Bombers coach James Hird’s skills and attitude to the game. “His ability to stand up under pressure in those big matches (impressed me). He’d always seem to kick

You try and take little traits out of all the different players and try and turn yourself into that kind of player. I thought I played a little bit like Andrew Embley from the Eagles, his running power and his good skills. I grew up listening to those names and hoped I could be like them.” Duncan said that when his name was read out to join the Cats he felt daunted to be part of one of the great teams of the modern era. But when he arrived at the club the senior players took him and the other young recruits under their wings and made them feel welcomed and part of the group. Now, at 21, he feels like it’s time to mentor even younger players. “Joel Selwood is the biggest one when I first came to the club,” he says. “Cameron Ling has been a great support and I still keep in touch. I look back at that time when I was a young kid. “Now I’ve been in the system four years and I’m starting to get old, because with the transition of the club most of the (players on the) list now are under 23. I feel myself as an older player now. This year I’ve taken on a bit more of a role in helping bring success to the younger guys.” Duncan says winning the flag in 2011 when some critics were writing the Cats off as past their prime gave him particular pleasure. “Amazing satisfaction. It was probably easier for us to perform, with less pressure,

when people were writing us off. We went out and knew we could match it with the best.” He says he doesn’t feel extra pressure being in a one-team town and that so much affection flows to the club from Geelong people. “You’re made to feel special and it’s good to give a little back to the supporters because they’re a great part of the club’s success. “Occasionally people say g’day. Geelong people are really good, really nice. They say, ‘Hello, how are you’, ask how the club’s going.” Duncan is aware that an AFL player’s career can be short. “You’ve got to appreciate the time you’re there because it might not be very long, The average player plays for four years. You’ve got to enjoy the time while you’re there and use your time wisely.” Duncan will spend Christmas Day in Geelong then head back to Perth on Boxing Day to spend the New Year with his family. He enjoys Christmas as a chance to catch up with family and friends in Western Australia. “Spending time with my family, celebrating; nice food, nice people and a couple of soothing ales.” Will he do the Kris Kringle? “We were just talking about it in the house I live in. The boys and I might do a Kris Kringle. A multibillion-dollar revamp of the regional rail link (RRL) is unlikely to reduce travel times to Southern Cross Station for Geelong’s long-suffering commuters, say commentators. Commuters, who still struggle to get a seat on peak services, can also expect ongoing delays for years to come during construction work, according to a retired rail expert. John Nestor, who was the passenger business manager for New South Wales Railways, says even when the project is complete, commuters will still travel on a service that was matched in travel time by a steam service in the 1930s. That service, however, ran direct to Spencer Street and there were, of course, fewer commuters in those days. The Geelong line was Australia’s first regional network, with the first sod turned in 1853 and local prisoners seconded to do the grunt work. Since then there have been more revamps than many can remember and complaints have increased with every delay – and there have been many, including replacing services with road transport, signal failures and accidents on the line. It has been suggested that V/Line change its name to “V/Line Apologises”, as most of its announcements start that way. Nestor believes that things are not going to get much better under the $5.3 billion (and rising) upgrade – and could actually worsen. His biggest gripe is the new double-track line from Deer Park West to the Geelong line south of Werribee, which will include two new stations, at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit. The stoppages will delay services, Nestor says, and there will be more pressure on the state government to add more stations as the population expands in the area. But surely such investment would reduce travel time? “It’s highly unlikely,” Nestor says. “It is 12 kilometres longer on an 80-kilometre journey. The thing is a waste of money, but then again most railway projects are a waste of money. But there are a lot of people who make a lot of money out of it.” The state government, he says, saw the federal government funding of the project as a massive windfall and grabbed the money quickly, but had not adequately thought through how to use it to the best advantage of rail travellers. “I think if there is any chance of stopping

The construction people think it is a great thing – double-track railways do not come your way every day of the week. “The way to go in Victoria is double-deck trains hauled by diesel engines for regional services. They could cater for 1000 passengers at a time and that would reduce the need for additional trains.” There was also the potential for a dedicated tunnel. But whether this will make up for the additional stops in commuter time remains to be seen. Paul Westcott, the Public Transport Users Association’s Geelong branch convener, also cast serious doubts on the project, saying nobody was prepared to give any guarantees that the journey would be any quicker. “I think the regional rail link is a flawed project,” Westcott says.

“We have been asked for a modelling of the travel times on this bypass and we have never received any information on this.” Westcott is also concerned there could be five more stops on the line. “It just does not hold up at all and we are not quite sure who is to blame, as everybody passes the buck,” he says. “The alternatives for the regional link were not fully considered at all; they grabbed the money and ran – and, of course, it is not going to work.” The state government has already awarded the major regional rail link contracts for each section. “Works are proceeding well,” Transport Minister Terry Mulder says. “This is an exciting heavy-rail project for Geelong, Colac and south-west Victoria. When RRL opens in 2016, the Geelong and Warrnambool line trains will be separated from Metro suburban trains between Sunshine and Southern Cross. “This will avoid the current delays caused

by V/Line’s Geelong and Warrnambool trains having to crawl behind Werribee and Williamstown line Metro trains in from Werribee or Newport respectively, or wait at junctions near Newport and Laverton for other trains to get out of the way.” Mulder said the new link line via Tarneit and Sunshine would not be longer than the current line via Newport. “V/Line trains will be able to maintain a high average speed between Werribee West Junction (between Little River and Werribee stations) and Sunshine. This will make up for the longer route,” he says. “On balance, the Coalition government has been advised by the Regional Rail Link Authority that V/Line’s trains should maintain the current 2012 travel times. Final timetables will be drawn up much closer to 2016.” The link will separate regional trains from metropolitan trains, giving Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat trains their own dedicated tracks through the metropolitan system from Sunshine to Southern Cross Station. In August, 2010, the authority was created by the state government to manage the delivery of the project. In February, 2011, the Baillieu government announced the project was under review because of “chaotic planning” and a “massive blowout” in cost. The government says, at this stage anyway, that the project is full steam ahead, as it appeared to be in 1857 when the line was officially opened, according to Rail Geelong. Tragically, a rail superintendent was hit and killed minutes after the 10am departure “when he was knocked from the train” while passing under the Separation Street bridge. “The train arrived at Greenwich (near Newport) at 12.10pm, but because of the already full train, and large number of intending passengers from Melbourne, a second train had to be arranged.” The first train arrived back in Geelong at 4pm and, according to Rail Geelong, a celebratory banquet started with 4000 people served eight tonnes of food. fun night at the ok choral music When Steph Payne moved to Geelong three years ago, she brought with her experience in something the city didn’t have. That was a particular type of community choir. While Geelong has its established choirs, they were different to the ones she was used to in Melbourne. So she simply started her own. The result was Geelong’s 18-member Corisande choir that now performs regularly around Geelong. It has sung at the annual Pako Festa in Pakington Street and makes a return appearance in this January’s festival. Now, for the first time, it has been selected to perform in the annual three-day Boite Singers’ Festival at Daylesford that runs January 10-13. Melbourne’s Boite is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes community music. For its festival debut, Corisande is amalgamating with another group that Payne conducts, Port Melbourne’s Cadence Choir. They have been billed as Cadencande on the program, which includes workshops and concerts with local and international singers such as Spain’s flamenco singer-guitarist Diego Guerrero and the Seychelles’ Grace Barbe. Payne, a former lighting technician and stage manager, describes herself as “a late bloomer’’

in singing. “I was in my mid-20s when I was studying acting and found I could do something that not everybody could do.’’ She now works full-time directing community choirs in Melbourne and teaches choir singing at the CAE. Three years ago, a relationship took her to

Geelong. With another newcomer, she launched Corisande. It was a way of continuing the contemporary style and standard of singing she was used to, but also a way of breaking into a new community. Corisande’s members are mainly female but it has three male singers. Members hail from Geelong and the Surf Coast. They rehearse Thursdays at the Belmont Hotel. The choir’s repertoire has African and folk influences but it also performs Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know. Payne arranges the harmonies variously in three, four, five and six parts. She emphasises that an essential aspect of participating in the choir is “to have fun’’. Running choirs dovetails with Payne’s philosophy on the importance of building community. “The best community choirs are ones with strong social bonds,’’ she says. The Boite Singers’ Festival is open to choirs and individuals. ProPer Policing key to geelong casino, says giddings gaMBling Avalon Airport boss Justin Giddings has rolled the dice and is hoping a developer is willing to gamble on his proposal to open a casino in Geelong. The airport chief executive expected a mixed reaction when he suggested a casino for the region but believes it can work. He also believes it would be a major selling point in attracting Asian airlines to the region now that the federal government has granted the airport international status. Chinese visitors flock to Crown Casino after arriving at Tullamarine, with Giddings estimating that 80 per cent attend the massive gambling den on the Yarra. He knows about the arguments, problem gamblers, money launderers and links to crime lords. But he still believes it can work if properly policed. “It’s a firm belief I have that there should be one in Geelong,” Giddings says. “They do not have casinos in China, and if we really want to try and get people into the city it is a natural choice.” With confirmation that Avalon has approval for international status, Giddings is selling the value of the region and the airport to overseas carriers, with a potential casino an added attraction.

We are not talking about preying on the locals,” he says, adding that the venue he proposes would be more for international and interstate visitors. He believes it could be a smaller establishment, possibly in the arts precinct or in a park or golf course – preferably in an area that could show off what the city had to offer. Giddings says the employment benefits would be massive, as shown in Adelaide, where the casino is the 10th biggest employer in South Australia with 11,000 people. Launceston also has a casino in a country club, while Cairns has its own casino. “This is something that we should look at,” Giddings says. “I would imagine that you would start with something small, with a convention centre attached to it.” However, he has run into some stiff

opposition, with many people believing he has muddied the waters by linking his proposal to a much-discussed convention centre. Giddings was trying to sell his idea to Geelong Otway Tourism at a meeting last week but the concept was not endorsed by the group’s chief executive. Roger Grant, head of the tourism body, says he can understand why Giddings is pushing the concept, but believes Geelong could not begin to offer the Chinese visitors what was already available at Crown Casino. “We do understand that the Chinese are looking for additional night-time entertainment, but I do not think that Geelong or any other area could do what Crown Casino does,” he says. “We would have to offer a very distinctive and different proposition.” He is also concerned that a casino was being linked to a new convention centre. “I think they should be two separate

projects,” he says. “I think we can do something special in Geelong that does not involve a casino. It’s all about delivering a high-quality, unique experience.” The proposal got no support from MP Ian Trezise, who sits on the board of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. The Geelong state Labor member says while he admires what Giddings is doing at Avalon Airport, a casino would create more problems for addicted gamblers. According to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, punters lost $116,525,894.57 at Geelong gaming venues in the past financial year. This financial year, until the end of October up to $9,209,796.62 has been fed into machines. “Problem gambling is already a cancer in the community and a casino in Geelong would allow that cancer to fester,” Trezise says. “This is just pie in the sky; the state government will not let it happen.” Trezise also believes that linking a casino to a convention centre would weaken support offered by the state government as it would be seen as a back-door attempt to create a gambling facility. \ PAUL MILLAR editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

Music \ A diverse festival finds a home in vineyards, bushland and country chapels. Two very different voices tell MYKE BARTLETT all about it.

V

ictoria has no shortage of music festivals, but it’s rare to find one that truly caters for everyone. Now in its sixth year, the Peninsula Summer Music Festival has something in its program to tempt every taste. There’s jazz, chamber music and, as a treat for the younger patrons, an orchestral guide to farmyard animals. The choice of performers is just as varied. Across nine days, more than 80 musicians from Australia and abroad will perform in 19 events. Some of these stars are practised hands, while others have only just emerged, blinking, into the spotlight. One such fledgling, 22-year-old soprano Charlotte Betts-Dean, hasn’t yet graduated from university but has already performed for an impressive number of opera companies. Recently, her profile was given a boost when she made the finals in two prominent Australian music competitions. “Those competitions can be quite tough,” Betts-Dean says. “They’re hard going, mentally and emotionally, but that strengthens you as a performer. It toughens the hide a bit and allows you to grow.” Betts-Dean’s opera career is in rapid bloom, even if the genre does seem a strange choice for a young musician. Breaking into the world of classical music can be a long, hard slog. Wouldn’t she be better off practising pop standards and signing up for The X Factor? “You have to remind yourself that these things take time; it’s not like rock, in that you can be 22 and already at the top of the charts. It’s very much a slow process, developing the voice and maintaining it as an

music, if it’s in the family, it’s a natural inheritance. I always loved it as a child, but it really wasn’t until after my father passed away that I started singing professionally.” Having now worked in the industry for nearly four decades, Fitzgibbon is one of Australia’s most-respected jazz singers. She’s best known for a smoky, crooning kind of jazz, but is equally at home performing bossa nova, swing and blues. For the peninsula festival, she’s hoping to show off this range, by performing standards from the Great American Songbook. “I think, for an outdoor concert, it’s nice to be providing a little bit of everything. People have varying tastes. We just want to play beautiful music, enjoy it ourselves and pass that on to the audience.” For Fitzgibbon, enjoying yourself is key to being a great entertainer. “I like to get excited by the music. I’ve been to concerts by great people and been bored because it wasn’t entertaining, things were too mellow. That’s not my kind of thing. What really makes me happy is seeing the audience with the smile on their face, because that’s when you know you’re connecting with people.” Betts-Dean says she hopes to use that connection to broaden her audience’s musical palate. “I’m going to be singing a collection of art song, which isn’t opera as such,

instrument. It requires a lot of patience, diligence and determination. It sounds unglamorous, but that’s the way it is,” shw says. Of course, Betts-Dean never really had a choice when it came to her career, being from a thoroughly musical family. “My sister and I were raised on string instruments. My father played viola in the German Philharmonic, and my mother was a musician as well. It was just part of my life from a very young age.” Initially, Betts-Dean followed her father in picking up the viola but, after joining a school choir, soon discovered her talents lay elsewhere. “I found myself very much at home singing, rather than playing in the orchestra. It felt very natural to me and I thought, that’s how I can best express myself.” Nichaud Fitzgibbon, whose Twilight Jazz performance will close the festival, is also from a strong musical dynasty. Her family members have been jazz and showbiz greats for the past four generations, and Fitzgibbon spent much of her childhood in her father’s legendary Melbourne club, Smacka’s Place. “When you think about most families, if there’s a doctor in the family, the son becomes a doctor. With

There are a lot of kinds of music that don’t get performed very often, and I’d like to change that.” If that sounds like a career mission statement, that’s because it is. “A lot of singers are focused on one thing, but I’m interested in a variety of music and genres – I’m also a member of a jazz ensemble. barista \ LEANNE TOLRA REVIEWS UCAN CAFÉ with Down syndrome, is heading to Tasmania with his family and a resumé praising 12 months’ work experience in a profit-making café. It’s exactly what a mother with her own disabled son had hoped to achieve when she conceived the idea for the supported café just over a year ago. UCAN café, funded by Yooralla and Hobson’s Bay Council, employs two full-time managers who work with 11 people with a range of disabilities. The café boasts Melbourne’s first blind barista, Aaron D’Altera, a former plumber who six years ago contracted a brain infection that destroyed 90 per cent of his vision. Off-site catering gives the business extra income and the young people who work there the camaraderie that comes with preparing for events. This month the big event was the launch of the UCAN Blindfold Barista Challenge, catering for 150 people on the Fox FM rooftop in South Melbourne. Some of Melbourne’s top baristas, including Rhea Caldwell from Auction Rooms, Mike Sullivan from Three Bags Full and Matt Perger from St Ali, have taken up the challenge to prepare coffee without the aid of their vision faster

than the enthusiastic and passionate D’Altera. His best time for a caffé latte is one minute and 11 seconds. Perger, an Australian champion barista who placed third in the world championships in 2001, made his blindfolded coffee in one minute and 33 seconds.

Aaron D’Altera barista wants to open his own café one day. In 2006, the now

26-year-old contracted encephalitis, which caused him to have a stroke, robbed him of most of his vision and left him with an acquired brain injury. D’Altera’s job at UCAN gives him a reason to get out of bed – after his illness he only bothered to do so for coffee, anyway – and it’s helping him build a second career in public speaking. “I’ve given speeches for PriceWaterhouse and the governor-general,” he says. D’Altera did his barista course at the William Angliss Coffee School “because I’ve always loved coffee”. He’s a larrikin who works at the café on Tuesdays and Fridays every week, carefully laying out his saucers, napkins and spoons, and wiping spilt coffee grounds from the edge of his group head before pouring a shot. “We work hard here,” he says. “But we have fun.” \ ltolra@theweeklyreview.com.au

T

he woman at the table next door appears to be channelling Pocahontas. She’s rocking a headband and a fawn-coloured outfit that may or may not be made of buckskin. Sitting opposite her is another 30-something female done up like a game-show hostess. Can I have an E please, Adriana. If they’d read Rosetta’s website beforehand they would have noticed the dress code at Neil Perry’s new restaurant says “smart”. It does not say, “Come as your favourite fantasy character”. You can hardly blame them for wanting to dress up. With her glossy mahogany walls, ruched linen curtains and glittering Murano chandeliers dangling from domed ceilings, Rosetta fairly shrieks special occasion. Diners – perhaps, like us, sipping icy sgroppinos to enhance the Latin mood – recline on white leather thrones and red velvet banquettes, eyeing off marble floors and black-and-white photos of Italian stars. Rosetta completes a hat-trick of Perry-themed restaurants fronting the river. Australia’s best-known chef now has his ducks in a row beside the Yarra: hot and numbing duck at Spice Temple; confit duck at Rockpool Bar and Grill; wood-fired duck at Rosetta. The menu, a pretty pastel document with scalloped edges, is as irrepressibly Italian as the interiors. It lists crudi and carpacci, antipasto, pastas prepared in-house and a choice of classic, meat-heavy main courses. The wood-fired oven and char-grill is a highlight of the Rosetta cucina, deployed with pleasing effect on everything from marinated mushrooms muddled with pecorino to a special of 200-gram wagyu sirloin from Darling Downs. That steak costs $110, which is precisely double what you’ll pay for Rosetta’s fish stew. Two of the pastas clock in at $65. Staff will recommend you order a couple of sides, too, so that’s another $20 on the tab. Kerching! Rosetta is not cheap, by any reckoning, but the 700-strong wine list does offer a fair choice of Italian varietals in the $40-$70 range. There’s even an aglianico for $35 but, equally, you could blow close to $1000 on a half-bottle of single-vineyard Gaja barbaresco. We tread the middle ground with a versatile Argiolas vermentino ($75) that keeps us company throughout the meal. Great balls of fire explode from Crown’s riverfront columns as we tuck into those more-ish mushrooms and a ribbed dome of ricotta – made fresh daily on premises – teamed with roasted and herbed tomatoes, all drizzled with olive oil. It’s freshness on a plate, the ingredients presented confidently on their merits. The same goes for fleshy crescents of raw scampi meshed with orange slices, mint and pistachio, and splashed with excellent olive oil. You don’t need to fiddle with produce this good. On a second visit for lunch we try the black risotto of squid with seppia (ink) and lemon. The rice and fish are both absolutely al dente and there’s a welcome hint of chilli that livens things up. This is a Neil Perry restaurant, so precise cooking

is par for the course – the man has high standards to uphold. That said, not all dishes leave us impressed. A bowl of pea pod-shaped cavatelli pasta – perfectly cooked once more – has a rustic “sauce” of mushy zucchini that tastes mostly of mint and salt, except when you bite into a clove of garlic. Too much tomato overwhelms the Roman-style trippa. Plus, it’s $39 – steep for cow’s stomach. As my lunch companion says: “You can get more tripe and less tomato at Grossi Cellar Bar for $24. Not great value.” The only defect of the wood-fired porchetta, served dense and juicy with a cracker crust of crackling, is that it’s not very exciting. The advertised mustard fruits are no more than a garnish and we choose badly with the sides; roasted rosemary potatoes and carrots tossed with salted ricotta do little to relieve the plodding heaviness of the meat. We should have had the salad. Or, better still, the osso bucco – cross-cut chunks of veal shin are braised in vermentino for what must be hours, judging by the way the gelatinous meat sighs off

the bone and slumps into juices laced with lemon zest. I find myself cursing the size of the bones and wishing (a) there was more meat to inhale and, (b), some bread to sponge the sauce. I make do with a spoon but have to stop myself running a sly finger around the bowl. I’d come back to Rosetta just for this dish. On the desserts front, I plead negligence. We didn’t have room. But Rosetta offers seven sweet endings, including chocolate torrone, panna cotta and tiramisu. Crown already has a pretty fine Italian restaurant in Giuseppe Arnaldo & Sons (I slobber at the mere thought of Robert Marchetti’s prosciutto). But Melbourne loves a good Italian restaurant – and Rosetta definitely is one – so maybe there’s room for two on this strip. DECANTER \ French wines … start with a blanc canvas or take it as rouge, writes ben thoMas

I

’ll confess that one of the perks of this job is the almost unceasing flow of wine samples for review that make their way to my post office box. Accordingly, I don’t buy a lot of wine, but when I do, it’s usually foreign. And cheap. I’m not the only one. Australia’s strong dollar combined with the weak euro have led to more and more wines from Europe, and France in particular, being imported by the big chains and an ever-growing group of small, specialist importers. For about $20 you can pick up a bottle of wine similar to what you might find at a bistro in a little town in the French countryside, albeit for a handful of euros. These days in Melbourne it’s possible to have a glass of decent Bordeaux with your chops on a Thursday night and follow up with a vouvray with Friday’s fish and chips. The imports fall into two categories: affordable entry-level offerings from France’s premier regions, such as Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, and wines from lesser-known regions, such as the Loire Valley and the southern regions of Languedoc and Roussillon. A few of these wines are packaged for foreign markets and spell out the grape varieties on the bottle, but most bear their French label – and let’s face it, French labels can be bloody confusing. A good start is to get to grips with what grapes are grown in the various French regions, but there’s far more to deciphering the code of a French wine label. Luckily, you don’t need a degree in French to understand them, and once you know what to look for it’s really rather easy. The key items to identify are producer, region, vintage and alcohol. If you’re lucky, the grape variety will be labelled. There’s also the name of the winemaker and, in the case of top-tier wines, the name of the vineyard and whether the wine was bottled at the winery or at a co-operative. If vieilles vignes appears on the label, the grapes will be from vines planted more than 35 years ago and the wines are likely to have a core of concentrated flavour due to the fact that older vines produce fewer grapes. See blanc de blancs on the label and you know the wine is made from white grapes – you’ll usually see this on Champagne – while blanc de noirs indicates a white wine made with red grapes (the juice in most grapes is clear and wine’s colour comes from the skins). \ bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

Rhône \ Primary reds are shiraz, grenache and mourvedre, straight or as blends, while whites include the textural viognier, marsanne and roussanne. Look to the Loire Valley, too, for interesting wines. You’ll find sauvignon blanc in the whites of sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, while in Vouvray it’s chenin blanc (white) and cabernet franc (red). anjou makes cheerful rosé from cab franc, which is also the dominant red in Chinon. Further south along the Loire, there’s the muscadet region, where the wines made of melon de bourgogne are a perfect match with oysters straight from the shell. \

It’s smooth, too, with the flavours hanging over a spine of bright acidity. Food match \ Grilled rabbit

bordeaux has had a string of good vintages (each new one seems to be dubbed the “vintage of the century”) and ’09 was a very good one. top vintages and a strong dollar means we’re seeing a load of new wines just like this. a blend of 80 per cent merlot, 15 per cent cab sav and 5 per cent cabernet franc, this has layered aromas of red berries, blackberry, earth and graphite, which are mirrored on the light-bodied, savoury palate. smooth, with fine, chewy tannins and refreshing acidity, it’s crying out to be served with a sunday roast-lamb lunch. Love a bargain?

the grape is picpoul blanc and in the local occitan language it means “lip stinger” – it gets the name for its naturally brisk acidity. It didn’t sting my lips, but it did get the tastebuds racing. Quite floral, it smells and tastes of fresh-cut pear and apple, wax, minerals, lemon and honey, along with a light background yeastiness. It’s intense and racy, for sure, but it is balanced and crisp, with dry, chalky acid and a smooth texture. It finishes clean and refreshing. Food match \ Fried whitebait

bourgogne rouge is pinot noir, as this label spells out, and this is a wine that needs a few hours in the decanter to flesh out and reveal its charms. Perfumed, it has earthy raspberry, blueberry, cherry, lavender and spice aromas and flavours. savoury and almost demanding food, this is smooth, with taut, mineral-edged acid and powdery tannins. It’s an intriguing wine, with a decent finish, too. a delight to drink on the second day after opening. Food match \ Roast venison fillet

the aude Valley is in the south-west corner of France, near the walled town Carcassonne. Warm days and cool nights have produced a wine that shows characters of both. aromas and flavours of plum, blackberry and blueberry speak of sunshine, while pepper, spice and cured-meat notes hint at cooler nights. smooth, balanced and with a soft tannic grip, it’s a better wine than the price suggests – my wife was shocked when I told her what a bottle costs – and worth stocking up on. ac Tucker was four when he “flew” for the first time. His father, an electrician obsessed with aircraft, built a hang-glider using aluminium piping and a tarpaulin in the garage of their eastern suburbs home. Father and son then made their way to the Great Ocean Road, strapped themselves to the glider and launched into the wide blue yonder … “Mostly I recall mum and dad fighting; mum storming off to the landing site with the idea that she could somehow catch me, dad handing me the picnic basket that mum had thrown down in a tantrum, dad launching off into space and then … freedom,” Tucker says with a laugh. That flight was the first of many. After leaving high school at 17, Tucker joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), eventually becoming an elite F18 fighter pilot – one of only 60 in Australia at any one time. Now retired, he’s written Fighter Pilot: Mis-adventures beyond the Sound Barriers with an Australian Top Gun. Tucker says his career path was set when he and his father went to an air show at RAAF Base East Sale.

The F-18 Hornet had just been introduced and two of the impressive machines were on display. Tucker, then 16, was mesmerised. He met an F-18 fighter pilot, Ross Fox, who spent hours showing the teenager around the aircraft. By the end of that meeting, Tucker had been invited to spend a week with Fox at RAAF Base Williamtown in Newcastle. Tucker’s dad drove him there from Melbourne. “Dad was the most supportive father,” Tucker, 42, says. “I remember he was working in Laverton and I was on a pilot’s course at Point Cook. We’d take off to the north and turn over the top of Laverton. One of the guys got back and said, ‘Your dad has painted the roof of a shed in Laverton’. Sure enough, I took off and he’d painted, ‘Go Mac’, in big white letters. But once my flying career became more dangerous, I think dad questioned whether it was worth it. “Spending that time with Ross Fox gave me something to focus on at school, so I studied hard. And once I joined the air force, I continued to study. It wasn’t a sacrifice to me to spend a Sunday afternoon studying a flight manual because I was focused on the end game.

ummer has a new crush – polo. There’s something about polo that continues to draw an elite social set. And in the hands of the fashionista, the horseback sport is gaining attention like never before. This is where fashion, with its laid-back smile, takes a casual step onto the grass and fancy marquees play host to celebrities and special guests. About 5000 polo lovers attended Portsea Polo last year, with the coastline providing an ideal backdrop. According to Jeep ambassador and professional polo player Matt O’Leary, it has become “such a sexy sport”. “It’s also an aspirational brand,” he says. “It’s not a product you can wear, but it’s the whole sport and image it projects that makes it so appealing. It attracts men and women and it is easy to understand the game and enjoy.” This year Jeep returns for a second year as naming sponsor. The three-year deal has helped lure a cashed-up and hip crowd. Sam Tabart, director of marketing at Fiat Chrysler Group, sees many synergies between Jeep and those involved with the sport on and off the field. “It’s a perfect fit for all of us,” he says. O’Leary and his brother, Luke, run the Victorian Polo Academy in Werribee. They’re professional players and also opened a second academy in Queensland (from where they both originally come). They have up to 80

appearances. Gale wore an aqua Dion Lee shift in what was her polo debut. “Polo is a whole new world but I kind of interpreted my style to be more casual,” says Gale. “I was possibly still taking a bit of a risk with this Dion Lee dress … you just have to keep a casual glamour about you – don’t overdo hair and make-up either.” Former Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell, can now add Jeep ambassador to her public profile. “I love it more each time I go,” she says. “It’s an easy sport to follow and a good chance to catch up with friends and enjoy the outdoors. I definitely watch a chukka or two on the day with my girlfriends … and take your binoculars, ladies, because the players are easy on the eye.” Campbell agrees that polo has become a popular summer sport for fashion lovers. “It’s all about comfort at the polo,” she says. “Wedges are fantastic for the polo or you can opt for a nice flat sandal. Sport \ aaron finch is ready to answer the call

A

sk Aaron Finch what his biggest test in cricket is and he won’t make reference to clouting Warnie over the fence at Etihad Stadium. However, the demolition of Australia’s ageing spin king a fortnight ago – including two mammoth sixes in Shane Warne’s first over – to start the new Big Bash League season had good judges’ heads nodding. Better still, Finch finished by scoring one of the most eye-catching centuries ever seen in Australia. As much as the Melbourne Renegades captain’s 111 not out off just 65 balls had everyone crying out Finchy’s name from the stands, it won’t satisfy the country kid from Colac just yet. “I want to play Test cricket for Australia,” Finch, 26, boldly declares. “Look, I think that is the ultimate challenge. People say there is a lot of money in Twenty20 cricket, but you get judged how you play in the longer format of the game.” But the latest T20 sensation is under no illusion that breaking into the Test side is a fait accompli. Finch points to Ricky Ponting – despite a form slump that eventually ended the Test career of the former Australian captain – as the “ultimate idol” to aspire to. “He’s played for like 500 years of Test cricket and made five million runs,” Finch says of Ponting. “So to play Test cricket and to be judged on that level is a different scale altogether (to Twenty20 cricket).

“My ultimate goal is to play Test cricket – the bar has been set high, and hopefully I can set it a bit higher.” Finch struggled to hide his excitement over returning to the Twenty20 format, in which the stocky right-hander has made his name, first for two-time champion Victoria, and now in the second season of Australia’s revamped eight-club competition. “I’m feeling good – I feel like I am in good form,” he says. Finch then adds it feels like he’s “hitting a few in the middle”. That’s an understatement for the Geelong Cricket Club prodigy. Before single-handedly leading his adopted Renegades franchise to sweet victory over the more-fancied Melbourne Stars to earn cross-town bragging rights, Finch had been in career-best form for Victoria in the 50-over game. Scores of 154, 63, 80 not out, 140 and 46 in his five knocks this season have Finch an almost certainty to make his one-day international debut for Australia, a fact that would surprise most cricket fans. Finch has already made three T20 international appearances, which included a half-century and a batting average of 104. “I think if I keep scoring runs, I’ll be a chance,” he says about reappearing in Australian colours against Sri Lanka at the MCG on January 11. If not, someone will overtake me, so I have to keep scoring runs consistently until that first one-day game.”

But the bigger question is whether, as the next big thing, Finch can break the mould from limited-over specialist to become Australia’s next Test player? David Warner did. In fact, the blistering Test opener really did so on the back of repeated successful showings in both forms of the shorter game. A breathtaking 89 from 43 balls in his Twenty20 international debut set the tone, which was made even more remarkable as the first Australian to play for his country without playing first-class cricket since 1877. Later, Warner had played just six first-class games for New South Wales when the selectors chose him to open the batting in the first Test against New Zealand last season. Evergreen Mike Hussey, on the other hand, spent 11 seasons playing first-class cricket before playing Test cricket in 2005. Look closely and Finch and Warner share some remarkable traits. Consider this: Warner, also 26, is just three weeks older; Finch at 174 centimetres is just three centimetres taller; and, incredibly, they both received bans in 2007-’08 at Australia’s cricket academy for keeping untidy rooms, of all things. But Finch’s first-class figures, which include just two centuries in 52 innings at an average a tick under 30, would suggest talking up a first Test cap could be premature. It gets worse. This Sheffield Shield season, which has yielded just 34, one, nine, 16 and eight, hardly gives any faith in his ability to spend painstaking hours at the Test crease. But Geelong coach Damian Shanahan, who backs up as the Renegades assistant coach, says greater exposure against the world’s best bowlers will tighten Finch’s game. “I think he should go the way of the international players, where a lot of them do come through the one-day sort of system first and foremost, and now we’ve got the Twenty20 system as well,” he says. “It gives them that experience at international level, and there is now a lot of players who have now come through that one-day side and Twenty20 side – Dave Warner is probably the first of the Twenty20 guys to come through and play Test cricket – but that’s definitely an option. “There is no doubt that Aaron is good enough to play Tests. “He just needs to get that opportunity in the one-day side first and get back into the Twenty20 side, and show his skills in the biggest stage of all.” Shanahan started coaching Finch at Geelong six seasons ago, when he had begun to establish himself as Geelong’s rising batting star. Remarkably. the coach recalls first spotting a destructive 16-year-old as an under-age talent four years earlier. “(Victorian coach) Greg Shipperd got him down as a young fella to hit some balls and get around the group sort of thing,” Shanahan recalls. “I had a net session with him there and I was thinking how good this kid is going to be. “He’s always had it and I definitely thought since I first laid eyes on him he was going to be something very special,” he says. “It’s great that’s it starting to work out that way.” \ Andrew MAthieson editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au december 20, 2012 \ The weekly review 21

developing our citY \ The New Norlane project will change the face of an often underappreciated suburb.

Y

ears ago, Phil Sanders paid the deposit on his father’s Norlane home. So when his father passed away five years ago, Phil and his family decided to move back to the northern suburb of Geelong. It’s a decision neither Phil nor wife Kerry regret. “Norlane is close to everything – I can walk my girls to school, walk round the corner and hop on a bus to town or to Corio Village shopping centre,” says Sanders, who’s an enthusiastic member of the Community Advisory Committee in Norlane. The committee is made up of residents and people from local businesses, government and community services who have an interest in the future direction of the area. “I feel very safe here, too,” he says. “Our neighbour bought her house in 1956 and she’s now 87, and her neighbour has also lived in our street for years. “They have nice gardens and look after their homes … I think there’s a real sense of community in Norlane. And with the changes happening, I think that sense of community can only grow stronger. “When I go to my local shops now, there’s a real buzz. Residents are excited because they’re starting to see change – change for the better.”

Creating a buzz

The “buzz” surrounds an ambitious Victorian government project – New Norlane – that will reinvigorate this tired working-class suburb. The four-year $80-million housing initiative will see more than 320 new, affordable houses built in the area. Half will be social housing or public houses, and the rest will be affordably priced houses for private sale. The properties are being built on 200 vacant lots that pepper Norlane’s streets and that were once the sites of houses that became dilapidated eyesores. The New Norlane initiative will see modern houses take shape on these sites, with the social and private housing being of similar quality and appearance. According to Patsy Prendergast, assistant director property delivery at the Department of Human Services in Melbourne, there has been a progressive demolition of properties that have reached the end of their lives. “As a result, we accumulated 200 blocks of land, and this presented an opportunity to bring private investment into the area,” she says. “We want to replace some of the public housing with better stock and bring in some private housing to create a balanced mix in the community – working people, the elderly, kids, people with families. “We see enormous opportunities in this part of Geelong, and we want to use the land available to us to put affordable new housing into the market. For a long time, Norlane has not been seen as a place to buy a home. This initiative is changing that perception.” In decline

The Norlane Estate was one of the largest housing estates built in Victoria after World War II. Between 1948 and 1958, more than 2300 commission properties were built to address a shortage of housing for workers in country areas. At the time, many Norlane residents were employed at the local Ford and International Harvester plants. But as employment dried up, Norlane’s prosperity declined. Increasingly, houses became occupied by the unemployed and people with higher needs. Gradually, Norlane became regarded as an undesirable area of Geelong plagued by social issues. Reversing fortunes

New Norlane’s vision is to reverse that stigma. Cr Kylie Fisher represents the Corio Ward, which includes Norlane, and has lived in the suburb with her children for almost 13 years.

Display villages are scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2013. Geelong-based Hamlan Homes has its first 10 plots ready with 20 new houses being built on those sites. Houses will range from 10 to 16 squares with a focus on affordability. Two- to three-bedroom houses with a single garage and including land will be available from the low $200,000s, according to Jason Farnell, Hamlan sales manager. “We’ve started building the social housing and will build the private homes as they sell,” he says. “As this initiative continues, I think the perceptions of Norlane will change dramatically. “With a facelift and with some confidence, I’ll think we will see more people who are already here renovating their homes, and so the area will continue to improve. Norlane has a number of strengths – it’s only 10 minutes to Geelong CBD and it’s the Melbourne side of Geelong, so is an easy commute … there are some major stores locating there, too. “The locals are excited. They sense there is change and they feel included in that.” Burbank’s private houses at Norlane will range from a compact two-bedroom-plus-study to a larger detached four-bedroom-plus-study with double garage and outdoor area. Burbank managing director Jarrod Sanfilippo says people find it reassuring that the the government has made this commitment to the redevelopment of Norlane. “We hope to help refresh a suburb that has not had the best history,” he says. “The Norlane of today won’t be the Norlane of tomorrow, but the challenge will be getting people to buy now and to see the future vision. I think those who enter New Norlane in the initial stages will be rewarded long-term as the value of the area and the values of properties in Norlane increase.” coming alive

FAST NORLANE She’s hopeful the new housing and influx of private residents will lift Norlane. “Norlane has been a transient community for a long time and these new homes and a better-looking estate are much needed,” Fisher says. “When things look better, people start to feel better. “There are plans to improve schools in the area, too, and the strip shopping centres have been done up with new bins, seats and trees … we’re improving the open spaces. I hope we’ll see people moving to Norlane and choosing to live, work and play here. The area has got a lot to offer. “The low-cost housing brought me here initially but it’s the community that keeps me here. There’s a strong community spirit in Norlane – you help your mate and you look after each other.” Focus on affordability

The Victorian government has selected three home builders – Burbank, Hamlan Homes and Porter Davis – to build the private and social housing. Planning and construction is under way and each company will use local contractors and suppliers and take on some local apprentices to support the economy.

Porter Davis Homes director Paul Wolff says Norlane will shift perceptions of public housing. The Porter Davis display centre at Norlane will be built on the former site of the 1960s Yooringa Avenue units. “We believe mixed public and private housing will have a positive outcome,” says Wolff. “Norlane will be a community where all residents have access to stylish and quality homes as well as local infrastructure, facilities and amenities, which are critical elements in producing a liveable and viable suburb.” As well as new housing, the Victorian government has invested in a work and learning centre in partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Northern Futures. The centre provides access to work and learning advisers, computers and a range of training programs and job opportunities. Phil Sanders says the positive impacts of the New Norlane initiative shouldn’t be underestimated. “Norlane has been tired and run down but this project will bring in new people, new homes, new infrastructure, new business and new jobs,” he says. Sanders and his wife, who works as a cleaner, live in the suburb with their three daughters, aged seven to 12. “I can already sense a more positive vibe about Norlane and, being part of the Community Advisory Committee, I can see that residents are excited about what is starting to happen. he owners of this recently renovated brick house have gone all out to embrace its heritage. Their decision to mix subtle art-deco touches with others not so subtle – such as the kitchen – was a smart one. The kitchen’s red-gloss cabinetry, white-tiled splashback, pendant lights and black-and-white check tiles are vibrant and fun and make this the kind of place you can’t help but gravitate to. It’s got a real 1960s diner feel about it. There’s a 900mm stainless-steel oven, a pull-out pantry and plenty of cupboard space. Drawers in the island bench offer additional storage options. The kitchen looks directly onto the dining area, which has a built-in glass cabinet – another period feature that’s been retained – and polished floorboards.
