Music is said to improve a person’s ability in maths, languages and memory – it’s a creative discipline. So the joy for 75 Whitefriars and Siena College students performing in musical theatre earlier this year extended well beyond the adrenalin-pumping excitement of singing and dancing in a theatre packed to capacity. They learnt skills that will better prepare them for their adult lives. Who would have thought a musical could be more than just a fun way for students to meet and socialise? These students put on an energetic, skilful display of music and dance in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! at Nunawading’s Whitehorse Centre.
Catholic Ladies’ College was established in East Melbourne in 1902 by the Sisters of Charity, relocating to its current site on the banks of the Diamond Creek in 1971. This year we celebrate our 110th anniversary. At Catholic Ladies’ College we strive to provide a learning environment that celebrates the diversity and giftedness of all within our community. It is a learning journey that acknowledges parents as primary educators and our privileged role in partnership with them throughout their daughters’ secondary education. Through our students’ well-being, learning and teaching programs, we foster a passion for lifelong learning, ensuring the holistic development of each student.
Apart from countless hours learning to sing in harmony, play in the orchestra, polish acting skills and focus on choreography, they learnt self-discipline, time management, self-confidence and the ability to provide support for members of the company, a quality some think is only developed in team sports. The students’ hard work and creative flair has been acknowledged by their being nominated in six out of seven categories in the Musical Theatre Guild of Victoria – junior section. The categories are: best show, best male lead, best female lead, best female in a supporting role, best director and best musical director. \
Catholic Ladies’ College students are challenged to think as global citizens, consider the needs of those beyond their local community and to recognise the responsibilities their education provides as they take their places in work, social and family networks of the 21st century. The college still continues in the tradition of the Sisters of Charity, ensuring that our girls flourish in their time with us and beyond. Choosing the right school is an important family decision. Our college website captures much of the atmosphere and ethos of the college and will give you valuable information about our college programs and co-curricular opportunities. We look forward to seeing you and your daughters at a college tour next year. \
