an you feel it? There’s a frisson in the air C as the city counts down to the AFL grand final. It’s not just the excitement about who

will claim this year’s flag, but also the sense that we’re on the verge of something. It’s almost time to put away the footy scarves and break out the fascinators. Hello spring! This year there’s an extra whiff of new beginnings in the ether as the AFL prepares to launch its national women’s league in 2017. It’s a seismic shift in the game that helps define our city and the early signs are good. When the teaser Women’s All-Stars match was televised earlier this month, it was watched by more viewers than any other AFL game this home and away season. In celebration of footy’s brave new female focus, we invited five of the code’s most influential women into the TWR studio for a photo shoot and a chat about what they love – and don’t love – about the game and what they’d like to change. It makes fascinating reading. ●

Daisy Pearce \ Captain of the Melbourne Football Club When did you first fall in love with footy? I grew up in a footy-mad family. I had a brother either side of me and my dad, who were all heavily involved in our local club, Bright Football Club, in north-east Victoria. I started playing Auskick when I was about six. Many of the paintings and drawings that used to come home from primary school were all very much about footy. I was obsessed with footy cards and footy stickers. Fondest footy moment? I love any time you see young people inspired to play the game. Or you see something click for them where they either feel like they belong or can play the game. Since I became an AFL ambassador, and working at Melbourne Footy Club, I enjoy getting out to schools and kids’ clinics and seeing young people pick up the game, particularly now that the girls’ game is getting a bigger profile. To see them have female role models is pretty inspiring and it’s something I’m really proud to have been a part of. Worst footy moment? There were times when I thought I’d have to stop playing; that was tough. I had to play junior football with the boys because there was no girls’ competition. When I got to the end of under 13s, I thought I’d have to stop because that was the rule. My dad argued with the league and they overturned it so I could continue to play through to under 15s. When I reached the under 15s I thought I wouldn’t be able to continue playing. That’s when I moved to Melbourne and discovered the women’s league. Are you excited about the advent of the women’s league next year? It’s a really important step in making the AFL more attractive and accessible for women. It’s great that young girls can aspire to play in it from a young age. I think that’s exciting. And on a selfish level, I’m really excited to play in it as well; it’s a dream come true. ●

(MICHAEL RAYNER)

Susan Alberti \ Vice President of the Western Bulldogs Football Club

W MEN STANDING

Fondest footy moment? The redevelopment of the Whitten Oval. I played a very big role in that. It was an incredible achievement. We had to find $32 million in the west of Melbourne and that’s not an easy feat. Also when Tony Liberatore won the Brownlow Medal. I’d said all year that Tony was going to win and everybody said I was mad. I said, ‘He’s a guy who never ever gives up; he doesn’t have natural talent but he uses everything that he’s been given’. When he won the Brownlow, it was one of the happiest moments in my life. I bought his boots, which cost me an absolute squillion.

6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ SEPTEMBER 28, 2016

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

FIRST

With the national women’s league kicking off next February, PETER WILMOTH speaks to five of footy’s leading female influencers

When did you fall in love with footy? I was seven, so for 60 years I’ve loved football. I listened to it on the radio, because I was never allowed to go, with my ear against our big stereogram. My first game was at the then Western Oval. It was pretty ordinary, very muddy, very cold … but I loved it. The people were incredibly friendly and I immediately gravitated to the cheer squad because my dad, being a policeman, felt it was a safer environment. We always sat on the boundary, down the Geelong Road end. My favourite player was John Schultz because he was such a gentleman and such a good, clean player, and he was so polite. Then in 1960 he won the Brownlow Medal.

Are you excited about the advent of the women’s league? I’ve only been waiting for this for 50 years. I played for the Footscray Cheer Squad team, with the boys. On the Sunday we used to get our cheer squads together and we’d play against one another. I played for about three years until I was 15, maybe even a bit longer. I had to play against boys and I hung up my boots at 15 because there was nowhere to play with girls. That’s why I’m so excited. Is the AFL still a boys’ club? Look, I do not have a problem. If I can speak on behalf of my own club, I’m treated with absolute respect. It’s a fair environment. We’re three women on a board of nine. I really believe things are changing, the AFL has changed, and I think things are changing. ●

Caroline Wilson \ Football writer

Peta Searle \ Assistant forward line coach at St Kilda Football Club, first female coach in the AFL Fondest footy moment? Footy lends itself to so many good opportunities. There’s the five flags [won] at Darebin; working with [Port Melbourne coach] Gary Ayres. I’m really proud to be part of St Kilda Football Club, which is strong on inclusiveness and diversity and accepting people for who they are. One of my biggest moments is I’ve really loved being a good role model for my daughter, who’s nine, and my son, who’s six. What’s the biggest improvement in footy in the past 10 years? Off the field I love the fact that the AFL has taken more responsibility and opened up the game to all issues. The Pride Game, for example. It’s understanding the influence it has on society and doing something about it. We’re developing footballers but we’re also developing people.

stadiums. To go to Adelaide Oval now, you honestly are proud to be Australian. Metricon on the Gold Coast is a fabulous little stadium … Ditto the SCG now it’s been revamped, and Geelong, and obviously the MCG. We’ve got the best stadiums in the world. Is the AFL still a boys’ club? I don’t think you can change the culture just by your key executive appointments or by creating a national women’s league because there’s still a lot of influential people in the AFL who see it as largely an all-male domain. The AFL has always struggled with their relationship with women, but they’ve always treated them with respect at an executive and corporate level. The clubs have led the way in that … but we’ve got a long way to go.

Fondest footy moment? One that actually brought me to tears was when Sydney won the flag in 2005. Even though I’m not a Sydney supporter, I started writing about footy full-time the year of all their controversy when South Melbourne was moving up to Sydney. I have followed the Swans through all their various disasters and incarnations over a few decades, and when Paul Roos got up with that cup and said to all the South Melbourne supporters who’d waited 72 years for this, ‘Here it is’ … he could not have made a better speech, it’s still my favourite acceptance speech.

(MICHAEL DODGE \ GETTY IMAGES)

Is the AFL still a boys’ club? I think both Gill [McLachlan] and the AFL Commission have been really strong advocates in that space. You can see it in the younger generation coming through; they’re very open, they’re very respectful and they embrace women in different roles. But there’s still work to be done in clubs and leagues and communities in terms of unconscious bias. ●

Worst footy moment? There were a lot of moments during 2013 where I questioned my love for the game. The way Essendon handled the supplements revelations and what they’d done to those boys, in terms of the physical experimentation and needles, and the off-site treatments – drugs they still don’t know what they are. And then the utter refusal by the key players involved to take responsibility was, as a journalist and a football lover, the most disappointed I’ve been in the game. Biggest improvement in the past 10 years? It’s been the way the AFL has got together with governments and built these magnificent

(MICHAEL RAYNER)

When did you fall in love with footy? I’ve been going to Moorabbin to watch the Saints since I was in a bassinet. Later I got the cardboard boxes from the bar and slid down the hills. After the game [Saints legend] Trevor Barker used to carry me on his shoulders around the social club rooms. My parents were members all their lives so I was born into it.

When did you fall in love with footy? It wasn’t at a game but in my back garden in Armadale when I was seven. It was 1967, Richmond had won its first premiership in 24 years. I got home from a friend’s house and Fred Swift and “Bull” Richardson [Matthew Richardson’s late dad] were in our back garden. My father was a board member but not president at the time. The rest of the players had gone, and they were the last men standing. They were sitting on these white wooden chairs and my brother and sister were there and I joined in. They basically sat us on their knees and sang the Mickey Mouse Club song and then the Richmond theme song to us. I still remember the sun going down, a beautiful sort of spring evening. Richmond had won the premiership and there was this feeling of how special and amazing this was.

How can the AFL improve things for women? They need to introduce quotas at every level because that’s the only way the game has ever really made inroads. I’m not saying there should be an equal number of women coaches or managers or recruiters, but the AFL has to show leadership here. When their first woman commissioner [Sam Mostyn] was basically forced on to them, no male would stand aside so they ended up having to extend the commission; there was a quota-type move. I finally got in as a member of the Melbourne Cricket Club with my mum and sister in 1982 and that was because a quota system was introduced whereby women were allowed to jump the queue and come in on guest passes. That was a massive social change and I still think [former premier] John Cain doesn’t get recognised enough for that. So the quota system works. Nearly every club now has two women on their board. There should be more. Boards are far better because of it. The AFL has to show leadership, and although they have two women on their executive for the first time, there needs, in the next two years, to be four. It’s not good enough that we have only two women commissioners. We need to get that number up to three or four over the next two years. The next AFL chairman – if Mike Fitzpatrick is serious about reform – will be a woman. ●

“the next AFL chairman – if mike fitzpatrick is serious about reform – will be a woman” – Caroline wilson

(MICHAEL RAYNER)

Peggy O’Neal \ President of Richmond Football Club How long have you loved footy? I moved to Richmond in 1991. The first game I went to was a Melbourne-Richmond game. The Southern Stand had just opened so I think it was ’93. It was an April afternoon and beautiful. Richmond lost. I’d listened to it on the radio before, but seeing it live and on a beautiful April afternoon in a new stand was fantastic. Have you ever questioned your love of the game? No, I don’t think I ever question it. When I was approached to

go on the board, a friend said, ‘You’ve got to worry it doesn’t take the romance out of football because you’ll know more’. When the season starts every year, I think, ‘No, the romance is still there and the stuff that goes on between doesn’t really matter’ – because the enduring love of the game is so good.

I think there’s still a lot to be done by all of us in getting women into leadership roles. You look around and there are lots of men there. But I don’t think that’s necessarily the way it’s going to be in future. I’m always treated with respect. And, coming from the law, I’m used to being the only woman in the room.

What has been the biggest improvement in footy in the past 10 years? We’ve seen a more open, inclusive culture. Clubs have done so much to find a place for new Australians and for the original Australians and those who haven’t played the game before but now have the opportunity to do so. The clubs have jumped at the chance to make it everybody’s game and they are in a position to do such good for the community.

What does the AFL need to do to improve things for women? They need to tap into the pool of excellent qualified women out there and open the doors for jobs in executive roles because these well-qualified women who want a role in sports will go somewhere else otherwise. At Richmond we did a gender equity report and one of the things that came out was about recruiting policies. What we’d done at Richmond is to say that whenever we have one of those roles, we’d tell our recruiting agencies that “there must be women in the mix”. ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

Logan Clementine Pinot Gris 2016 (Orange) $23; 13%

Fortitude Pacer IPA (Queensland) $3.50 (300ml); 2.8%

It’s all about the blend with the La Boheme range. Blueberries and dark cherries are the major aromas here, with strawberries and spice in support. It’s silky, energetic and nuanced – the sort of wine you feel you could drink a lot of and enjoy every sip. Its berry and spice flavours aren’t too full-on and its robust tannins are great with food. ●

Here’s a pink pinot gris – and one of the best going around right now. The colour is a light blush, which comes from the grape’s purple skins making contact with their juice during fermentation. Highly floral with citrus – think new-season mandarin – and honeysuckle, it’s textural and grippy, with fresh acid and a lengthy finish. ●

I’ve never been a fan of highly hopped, full-throttle IPA beers, but light beers packed with hops are an excellent thing. They really add the flavour that’s often missing in a light. Drink this from a glass to get the most out of its zesty citrus and caramel aromas, creamy smooth texture and bitter, hoppy flavours at the end of each sip. ●

This was also an era of great change for Singapore, one of the most densely populated countries in the world, a melting pot of cultures that expresses itself most profoundly in cuisine. The menu at Old Raffles Place deftly reflects Chinese, Malaysian, Indian and British influences, with dishes such as lobak – a juicy, five-spice-laced hawker-style Chiko Roll – and chai tow kway, smoky stir-fried cubes of turnip cake with kecap manis, sitting alongside Hainanese chicken rice, spicy laksa and teh tarik, a sweet “pulled” tea poured from a height to cool it down for easy drinking by the roadside. ou can take Melbourne out of the grand final, but you can’t take the grand final out of Melbourne. Certainly, there’s no other sporting event – not even the Melbourne Cup – that seems to truly define our city. In recognition of the big day’s impact, the AFL last year launched the Foxtel Footy Festival. This four-day celebration brought a quarter of a million people to the lawns around the MCG. This year is expected to be bigger. Danielle Bleazby, director of events for the AFL, is the brains behind the festival. She says the featured activities are designed to lure a wide range of folk (even, unthinkably, non-footy fans). “It’s a great opportunity for family and friends to come down, find a whole lot of giveaways and activities, and just join in that great atmosphere that is Melbourne and football,” Danielle says.” In putting the festival together, she’s been keen to showcase the best of our fine city to interstate visitors. “What we’ve seen with the Perth clubs is they come in on the Wednesday or Thursday and are looking for stuff to do that will enhance their experience of grand final week. So we have some great restaurants

involved, such as Estelle, Biggie Smalls and Lady Carolina, showing off the great multicultural food that is Melbourne.” Visitors will have the chance to try pop-up bars and restaurants, and vote on special football-themed dishes created by some of Melbourne’s best chefs. There will also be plenty of activities for kids, with free films and stalls from Nickelodeon and Disney. The Toyota AFL Grand Final Live site will feature green screens to put you on the field, alongside a chance to try your hand (or voice) at commentating. Fans can have their photos taken with trophies and players from the past, as part of a display of every Premier Cup in existence. To top it all, local hip hop star Illy will be giving a free concert on Grand Final Eve. Of course, the centrepiece of proceedings will be the annual parade, expected to bring 150,000 marchers to the festival main stage. ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » 2016 Foxtel Footy Festival September 28 – October 1, Yarra Park, free » afl.com.au/footy-festival

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN FILM When something monstrous walks into young Jake’s life, he sets off in search of a magical orphanage once home to his grandfather. Said orphanage is a refuge for kids with mysterious powers, presided over by Miss Peregrine (Eva Green). There’s a lot to recommend in this new fantasy adventure – the young adult novel on which it’s based is rightly praised and more Eva Green is always a good thing. And yet, it’s hard to get past director Tim Burton’s cloying style. ■ Opens September 29. SPEAK LESS THAN YOU KNOW Beethoven meets the Bard for this musical tour through the composer’s complex character. Reading from Ludwig’s letters and memoirs, Shakespearean actor John Bell conjures a lover and a philanderer, a child prodigy who suffered at the hands of an abusive father and a genius with a boundless capacity for wonder at the beauty of the world. The reality As I walk in, the place strikes me as a ballet studio with attitude. The NeverEnding Story theme song is playing while girls from previous class are doing the splits – as a cool-down – and others are practising on the poles. I move to the back of the space, where the hoops and silks hang from the ceiling. I’m keen to hang upside down but our teacher, Liz, takes us through some warm-up exercises and safety instructions first. We do leg stretches, push-ups and abdominal work on the floor, and then chin-ups. The necessity for all of this becomes apparent when we finally move on to silks: it’s all about upper-body strength. Liz demonstrates a “French climb” on the silk, which turns out to be much harder than it looks, followed by a “Russian climb”. It’s a fun and giggly affair trying to loop our legs around to create a foothold and then pull ourselves up the rope using the strength of our arms. It’s also very rewarding when we finally get the hang of it. We then move to the hanging hoops, where we jump-lift ourselves up and hook our legs through to then dangle

upside-down. Finally, we perch ourselves in the hoops in a pretty rest pose known as the “tweety”.

RETAIL THERAPY THE PET GROCER \ SOUTH MELBOURNE

Who’s behind the counter? Owners Jason and Janine McIver were pulled into the pet industry when their much-loved dog passed away. After they were told their dog had 12 hours to live, the couple turned to homeopathics and kept her alive for another 16 months. “She’s left a legacy for us to push and develop and provide cleaner foods – real foods – or we’ll end up hearing a lot more sad stories,” says Jason. “We’re going to educate people.” What’s in store? From meals and treats to homeopathic flea treatments and natural shampoo, the store (which opened this month) stocks only the best quality products in the pet industry. You will find, for example, fresh kangaroo meat prepared each week specifically for the store. “We grill each supplier meticulously, demanding transparency and integrity. If we can’t get the answers, we won’t stock it,” says Jason. Janine says vets are noticing a difference in the animals that come in. “That spring in their step. They say they see a different animal – much calmer, with more stable moods,” she says.

Our pick This cute Pet Pop is a go-to product for any sick pet. Containing goat milk powder, slippery elm bark, keffir, coconut oil and less than three per cent sugar, it’s a great source of probiotics. And nd humans can eat them! Cost: $4.95

Who’s buying? There are those who are sick of paying outrageous vet bills, those who have been recommended to the store after chatting to pet owners in parks, and those buying treats for neighbours’ or friends’ pets. ● JANE HONE

The safety aspect goes up a notch with automatic emergency braking and rear-traffic alert, which warns you if a car or pedestrian is approaching as you back out of a driveway or parking spot. Safe, roomy and comfy, it is clearly all about the family, with big doors and boot space to fit kids and all their stuff. Despite a nice line in leather, which also elevates the price, the interior is somewhat uninspired. ampton is known by locals as Bayside’s “hidden treasure” for its vibrant village and extensive beachfront stretching from Green Point to Sandringham Yacht Club. Littlewood, a boutique development of 27 luxury apartments at 2-4 Littlewood Street, is located to make the most of the Hampton lifestyle. It is two doors from Hampton Street, with its 50-plus cafes and restaurants. The beach and 17-kilometre Bayside Trail are a 10-minute walk and the train station, schools and tennis club are also close. The three-level project has just been launched by Steller, a developer-builder recognised for higher-quality boutique developments designed for owner occupiers. Architects Ewert Leaf have given Littlewood contemporary art deco curves with high walls protecting large courtyard gardens and a deeply set-back upper level with a timber-look pergola overhang. Seven ground-level apartments have private courtyard gates to the street or a side lane. The interiors are designed with 2.7-metre-high ceilings and 2.4-metre-high windows. Many bedrooms, as well as the airy open-plan living areas, open to courtyards or balconies. Luxury features include island benches and Carrara marble benchtops, light oak floorboards and handwoven wool carpets. Steller director James Cirelli says the size and quality of the apartments set Littlewood apart in the market. The internal areas range from 68 to 113 square metres and private outdoor spaces are up to 80 square metres. “We focus on creating stylish and highly liveable residences for owner occupiers with high-quality, low-maintenance materials.

“Buyers are able to amalgamate apartments to create larger residences and this is particularly popular with downsizers. We’re expecting high interest from first home buyers who have grown up in the area,” James says. Steller has developed its own sustainability initiatives and strives to provide an average rating of seven stars. Sustainable features include double glazing, solar panels on the roof to light common areas, rainwater

catchment for toilet flushing and design features such as concrete construction with additional insulation to reduce energy costs and noise. Littlewood apartments all include one to two ground-level car parks, storage in the secure basement and audio-visual intercoms. Completion is slated for early 2018. ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au

Littlewood’s interiors have a softly muted palette featuring natural stone and timber with high-end finishes. An expansive Carrara marble-topped island bench with waterfall ends takes centre stage in the kitchens, matched to Carrara marble 20-millimetre edged benchtops and splashbacks. The 2pac white joinery has finger-pull handles and the white Ilve appliances include an oven, built-in microwave, gas cooktop, integrated dishwasher and concealed rangehood. There’s a full-height pull-out pantry and a grey titanium double sink. ●

Highly crafted interior refinements continue in the bathrooms where a full-height natural oak veneer corner cabinet has pull-out shelving and laundry bin. A natural oak veneer floating vanity unit has a white stone benchtop and an above-counter oval Carrara marble basin. In the walk-in shower a full-height feature wall is finished with polished white herringbone tiles with a timber tile niche. Large stone-style porcelain tiles finish the floor and other walls and there’s a heated swivel towel rail, dual shower heads and frameless glass shower screen. ●

Littlewood’s generously sized apartments have 2.7-metre ceilings and large expanses of double glazing to courtyards or balconies of up to 80 square metres. Littlewood offers 19 two-bedroom layouts, most of which include a second bathroom, and eight three-bedroom, two-bathroom plans. Internal areas range up to 83 square metres for two-bedroom units and up to 112 square metres for three-bedroom apartments. Nearly all apartments have at least one bedroom opening to a courtyard or balcony. Some bedrooms include walk-in wardrobes. ●

T

hree things are foremost in building a bespoke residence, according to the builder of this new house in a tree-lined street between the leisure options of Dendy Park and the activity of Brighton’s shops. The floor plan and room zoning are critical; the high-quality build and fixtures are essential; then you add sophisticated bling as the icing and decoration on the cake. The experienced bayside builder understands the set-up because he has completed more than a dozen in the area. He and his family also live in a similar house he built two years ago, also showcasing European influences. It has given him the chance to do a thorough test run of the practical design, durability of finishes and flow of rooms. “We have pretty much the same floor plan at home for our family with three kids, but here we added a bedroom with en suite downstairs,” he says. The addition is an indication of the way he tweaks and improves designs progressively; buyers were seeking private accommodation for visitors or live-in grandparents. “I listen to the people who come through, what they say they like and what they want,” he says. With the floor plan mastered, priority shifts to quality in attention to detail, materials and finishes, which include travertine bathroom tiles, Calacatta marble kitchen bench tops, European oak floors the colour of raw almonds, elegant decorative cornices and bluestone paving. Then he adds the top layer of glamour – Bohemian crystal chandeliers and wall lights, bespoke wrought ironwork, a statement Smeg cooker, a triple-tiered fountain in the front lawn and a solar-heated pool with waterfall. There are five bedrooms plus three rooms that suit various purposes for living or study. The downstairs bedroom an its en suite are tucked away off the hall. Upstairs, there’s a second bedroom with en suite and two more sharing a dual-entry bathroom. The large main bedroom, facing the street, has two walls of built-in wardrobes and a luxury en suite with freestanding ovoid bathtub and nib walls screening the walk-in shower and toilet. There’s a TV room and an open study area at the top of the wrought-iron staircase. The main living area fills the width across the back of the house. On the left, the kitchen is replete with its commanding black stove, Calacatta island bench and an enormous well-fitted butler’s pantry that leads to the laundry. A kitchen servery window connects to the al fresco entertainment area, which comes with a built-in barbecue. The meals and living area focuses on its gas log fire in polished travertine chimney, flanked by built-in joinery, and a view through picture windows to the pool in a compact garden with artificial turf. Off the wide hallway there’s a step down to a dining room with elegant wall panels and 3.25-metre ceiling; a tiled powder room; walk-in understair storage; and garage access. There’s also a study that looks out to the fountain and has an adjoining storage area fitted with shelves and cupboards, earning full marks for design, quality and bonus bling. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Secure front and rear gardens mean ample space for play on this 780-square-metre property. Bright and recently painted, the Californian bungalow offers a choice of social spaces, a study and a north-facing, wraparound verandah. Off the foyer, the first bedroom has built-in wardrobes and a wide window to the verandah. The second (and main) has a wall of built-in wardrobes and a bay window. Tucked at the rear, the third bedroom gets views of a fernery and a glass door to the backyard. The central lounge has an open fireplace. A skylight in the kitchen sheds light on Formica benchtops, glass splashbacks and stainless-steel appliances. Open to the kitchen, the airy living and dining areas connect with a large, covered deck. Two cars can park in the gated driveway, while the garage has been divided in to a workshop and studio. Deco-style light fittings, Baltic pine floors, heating, cooling, built-in speakers and a water tank bolster the appeal. ● KAY KEIGHERY

A lone conifer stands at the arched entrance of this freestanding c1930 double-fronted cottage on a bluestone laneway. Full of character, the brick house has had an intelligent update. The entry hall leads to a light-filled, split-level living area with polished floorboards. Down a step, the cosy kitchen has a slate floor, timber worktops, an island bench with breakfast bar, and plenty of shelving. It also has a tall stained-glass window. The rear wall is made up of floor-to-ceiling windows and french doors to the north-facing courtyard. Two bedrooms and a spacious formal lounge with gas fireplace round out the ground floor. The bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and one has a door to the courtyard. They share a bathroom with laundry facilities. Upstairs, there’s a large loft bedroom with skylights and an en suite. Bridport Street village and the beach are moments away, as is the city tram. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

BRIGHTON \ 9A HORT RTON CLOSE A park-sized backyard that you don’t have to look after is the grand draw of this property in a quiet cul-de-sac just minutes from the beach. It has a back gate opening to Elsternwick Park and its tranquil lake, walking tracks, wooden playground for the younger kids and a skatepark for the older ones. The vendor’s large family gatherings have always spilled into the pretty park – but not because there’s a shortage of room indoors. The open-plan north side of the light-filled residence looks onto the park through tall windows and three sets of french doors, and the view is one-way to ensure privacy. The open space takes in the lounge room with its gas log fireplace, the dining area and the kitchen with its waterfall marble benchtop, Neff appliances and a walk-in pantry. Two courtyards open off this space, both with park views. The three bedrooms and study take up the south side of the 30-square house, which has 2.9-metre ceilings and blackbutt floors that give way to carpet in the sleeping zone. The main bedroom has a plush en suite with spa bath and walk-in wardrobe while two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes share another bathroom. The architect-designed 10-year-old house is one of three in a complex and has a security entrance at the end of its own front garden. ● HARBANT GILL
