ust over six years ago, former JCatalano journo-turned-media executive Antony hit upon an idea. When the global

media industry was wringing its hands over the apparently dire future of print publishing, he took a punt and launched a quality glossy home-delivered magazine, celebrating the best of living in Melbourne and showcasing the city’s most desirable properties. The idea proved to be inspired. Today, The Weekly Review is a thriving multi-media operation with nine editions delivered to 600,000 homes across Melbourne and Geelong each week, a popular website, and fast-growing social-media channels. In this week’s special Success Edition, we celebrate local success stories like our own. We’re also proud to launch the TWR Startup Stars Award, in search of Melbourne’s most brilliant startup. To be in the running for the award, worth more than $10,000, go to our website and let us know your own brilliant business idea. ●

DISRUPTIVE

INFLUENCE LISA MESSENGER HAS BUILT AN EMPIRE BY UPSETTING THE STATUS QUO

L

isa Messenger admits that not only has she plunged several times headlong into a new business without knowing much about it – she revels in doing it. Take her “entrepreneurial and lifestyle” magazine, Collective Hub, launched in 2013 into a challenged publishing environment. Lisa knew little about magazines and had never worked for one. “I had no idea what I was doing,” she says. “I had three staff under the age of 25 and I was going into a market that people said was dead or dying. So it was an interesting time.” It was likewise with her website, collectivehub.com, which features eight to 12 new stories each day. “I had no idea about online or digital,” she says. “I learnt the mechanics and put a team in place.” Lisa’s instincts proved to be excellent. The idea of launching businesses without multi-page business plans encapsulates her notion of what she calls “failing fast” – just jumping in and doing it. Lisa, 45, now oversees a media empire that includes the magazine (now sold in 37 countries), website, books, events and even homewares. She oversees every arm of the business, describing herself as the “brand architect”. She has written (or co-written) 16 books, one of which – Daring and Disruptive – will be released in the US in September through the major publishing house Simon and Schuster. We meet at The Weekly Review on a day when Lisa is down from Sydney with a diary packed with Melbourne engagements. She is a media darling who is invited to hang out with Sir Richard Branson on his private Caribbean island and, more recently, spent five days on Branson’s Makepeace Island near Noosa. The day before our interview, she says, John Cleese rang her. One another occasion American Vogue’s legendary editor Anna Wintour’s office rang asking if she could meet Anna

when she was in New York. “People asked me what I was going to wear. I said, ‘I don’t care what I’m going to wear, I’m worried about what’s going to come out of my brain!’.” Lisa started out in marketing and public relations before launching The Messenger Group, an independent custom book publishing operation, in 2001. But it’s with Collective Hub, a publishing operation she calls “a global community of entrepreneurial and creative minds who have an appetite for changing the status quo”, that she has made her mark. Under its banner she runs 18 business arms including a multi-media business comprising the monthly print

turn an ending into a beginning into a beginning. Geared towards the positive but not afraid to confront the negative, it says a lot about Lisa’s outlook on the world and goes a long way to explaining her crash-or-crash-through multi-platform success. She reflects on that time. Her previous book Life & Love had just gone to number one on Booktopia, the magazine was doing really well, “things were starting to move, then this break-up came out of the blue and dropped me to my knees. I couldn’t brush it under the carpet. It’s really inauthentic if I didn’t say, ‘Actually, I went through tough stuff too’.” She says writing about the break-up was “kind of hideous

“It’s about being an entrepreneur, living my life out loud, showing that anything’s possible” magazine, online news site, an event company, a custom publishing unit, an online store offering products such as candles, towels and diaries as well as links to Lisa’s speaking engagements and conferences or festivals. Lisa likes to go out of her way to do things differently, such as arriving at business meetings without supporting material because it makes connecting on a human level easier. Her philosophies on life and business are neatly encapsulated in her latest book – her 16th – in which she writes of a devastating break-up. “I thought my next book might be entitled Marriage and Motherhood but life had other plans … Clearly the universe didn’t get the memo.” The book outlines the break-up with “the man of my absolute dreams” who walked out “six days after we had just moved into our dream apartment together”. The book’s title needed to change, and it did, to Break-ups and Breakthroughs:

and kind of extraordinarily cathartic”. “I made a decision when I launched Collective Hub that I would live my life out loud. I’m strong enough and very confident in myself that whatever comes at me I will talk about and try and empower other people on that journey.” Central to her philosophy is non-conformism, doing things differently, testing an idea without fear of its failure. “I’m purposefully counter-intuitive,” she says. “I look at how something’s been done and I purposefully flip it.” She is a personification of another company’s brand motto – just do it. And do it fast. She has vowed to live her life “daringly and ferociously”. “For me it’s about being an entrepreneur, living my life out loud, showing that anything’s possible. And that will not change until the day I die.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

the secrets of her success WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WERE SUCCESSFUL? When things started flowing in a fairly natural form that started to mean success. I began my first business on October 22, 2001, at 31. I had 11 years of really nothing, churning along in business, over-servicing, under-charging, being everything to everyone, comfortable but not excited every day – 11 years of that slog. And finally I got to a point where a light bulb dropped and I thought, ‘This is what I want to do’. SECRETS OF SUCCESS? You need to know what your weaknesses are. I am terrible at detail so I surround

6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 24, 2016

myself with an amazing team. But I also know what I’m good at: being a visionary and pulling together teams and looking at things differently. Don’t expect that you can do it all; surround yourself with amazing people. HAS YOUR IDEA OF SUCCESS CHANGED? Before Collective I used to buy a lot of stuff. When you’re not completely fulfilled in your life – this was true for me – you go out and buy clothes or shoes or whatever and it’s instant gratification. The funny thing is now, every single day as an editor, I get sent probably 10 to 20 free things – clothes, shoes, all the stuff I used to buy – and now I pretty much give it all away to my team. I

don’t need stuff any more. I used to think I was going to work to be successful to buy more stuff, and now as I’m getting a level of success I actually don’t want stuff. I’m living more and more simply now that I’m more fulfilled in my work. HAS SUCCESS CHANGED YOU? I hope not. I don’t feel any different. I feel this is the start of a very big vision and I don’t want to get complacent or egotistical. It’s not why I started. The moment we forget why we started something, then it can all fall apart. TOP TIP? Have an unwavering self-belief. You might

knock on 80 doors and all but one will get slammed in your face. You’ve got to have that tenacity to keep going. Have a really clear vision and understand your “why”: why are you doing this? That’s the one question I ask myself every day. And hustle. You’ve got to get out there and work your butt off. HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS IN OTHER PEOPLE? My biggest measure of success is seeing others use their talents and step into their own purpose. Once they do that, I view them as successful because they’re living their best life and following their passion. That is true success in my eyes. ●

secrets of my

Since he famously skippered the wing-keeled Australia II to victory in the 1983 America’s Cup, breaking 132 years of American dominance, John Bertrand has become one of the country’s most admired leaders. In business he has built companies in the marine industry, property development and digital media. He is chairman and president of Swimming Australia, chairman of Sport Australia Hall of Fame and chairman of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

JOHN BERTRAND

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WERE SUCCESSFUL? I’m still trying to prove it – but clearly the America’s Cup. No one had achieved that before. The America’s Cup started before the US Civil War, to put it in context, and no other nation had been able to win it until we put a program together to beat the Americans. SECRETS FOR SUCCESS? You’ve got to have passion. Without passion it’s very difficult to achieve. And dedication and hard work. But invariably success comes from people, from a team environment. Yachting and swimming are very much team environments. I’m very much into team building.

(LISA’S MAKE-UP \ CATERINA PULEIO)

HAS SUCCESS CHANGED YOU? It has given me a sense of great contentment. With the America’s Cup I, had nothing more to prove in the world of sailing. Contentment is a wonderful thing for someone who’s so driven, like myself. The big challenge for someone who’s achieved something on the global stage and climbed their own Everest is to find the next passion in one’s life, because to go back and keep duplicating it is a little sad in many ways. HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS IN OTHERS? By what someone has achieved in their field, and what sort of balance they have. There’s the opportunity to give back. The higher a person achieves, the more opportunity there is to give back, and I see that as a responsibility. TOP TIP? Success requires good people around you. It requires people support, mentoring, expertise. Very rarely is it a one-man or one-woman show. ● NEXT PAGE \ HAROLD MITCHELL & CAROLYN CRESWELL’S SECRETS

CAROLYN CRESWELL

secrets of my “THE WEALTHIEST PEOPLE I’VE MET HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE MOST UNHAPPY”

As an 18-year-old first-year university student in 1992, Carolyn Creswell bought a small muesli business, where she worked part-time, for $1000 and launched Carman’s Fine Foods. Her products are now sold in 2500 outlets around Australia and in 32 countries. She sits on the board of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. In 2012 Carolyn was named Telstra Business Woman of the Year. In 2015, BRW magazine’s Rich Women list estimated her wealth at $57 million.

that has just won Woolworths’ Supplier of the Year. People say, ‘You’re exactly the same as you always were’. Money does not make you happy. To me it’s always about being so proud of Carman’s. Money doesn’t buy anything [important] like having a strong marriage, having a great family and good friends. The wealthiest people I’ve met have been some of the most unhappy, or perhaps have their priorities a little bit skew-whiff.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WERE SUCCESSFUL? I was at the airport in 2004 and went over to put something in the rubbish bin and saw three separate Carman’s wrappers in the bin and it was one of those moments of, ‘Oh my god’. I remember getting my phone out and photographing the bin. These are real people in the real world who have bought Carman’s. It was this overwhelming moment.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS IN OTHER PEOPLE? As [American poet and civil rights activist] Maya Angelou said: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it”. It’s not about the title on the business card, it’s about having your priorities right – I’m a good person, I’m doing something that’s making a difference.

HAS SUCCESS CHANGED YOU? I still think I’m absolutely the same person. I can’t believe I’ve gone from the checkout at Coles to having a business

(SUPPLIED)

SECRETS OF SUCCESS? It’s working out the small tweaks you need to make to ensure you are better tomorrow than you were yesterday. It’s constant evolution – how could I change that, can I systemise that – all the time. I have a sign on my desk: “Inch towards a better tomorrow.” It’s the little ones that make such a difference.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS? Do what you love doing. It’s about doing something because you’re going to make a difference. Having a sense of purpose. Every January I think, ‘OK, what are the things I want to do with my life?’ It could be tiny things. And then I laminate them and put them in my shower and remind myself every day. That way you can evolve your life. ●

8 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 24, 2016

One of Australia’s wealthiest and most highly regarded businessmen, Harold Mitchell turned the small media buying business he founded in 1976 with just $2000 into a national advertising powerhouse, Mitchell & Partners. In 2010 he sold the company to London-based Aegis for $363 million. A passionate patron of the arts, he has been chairman of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the National Gallery, and has sat on the board of the New York Philharmonic. He is also a former vice-president of Tennis Australia and one-time owner of the Melbourne Rebels rugby union team. WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WERE SUCCESSFUL? In the early years success was getting through to the next day. I sometimes didn’t have enough money to get through the whole week. Completing a week was a success.

abuse that sort of power you don’t have it any more. Sadly it’s also made me a little wary because people tend to look to take an advantage where they can. I try to put that into the background. People ask, ‘How and why are you successful?’. The only thing that has ever driven me – and I suspect anybody like me – is a fear of failure. HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS IN OTHER PEOPLE? More often than not success is measured by the usual values of money. I never have. In the middle years of our business I can remember twice a year I would have a Chinese dinner in Melbourne with a man who had the greatest grasp of people that I couldn’t quite get. He was a sergeant in the police force and he saw real people up close. I was fascinated by the stories he told of real people. He was fascinated with the stories I had about rich people and we had the best hour and a half you’ve ever had. I thought he was as successful as you could ever get.

SECRETS OF SUCCESS? You will never be successful at achieving something unless you decide what it is. I always say to people, ‘Let us decide which mountain we’re trying to climb. Let’s isolate it down to one mountain rather than trying to climb five little ones’.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS? Every Saturday morning I’d drive from St Andrews into the city and make up the accounts for the week or month. That started a pattern. I sat down with a pencil and paper and had a review, for about an hour, of how it was going. Then for the next hour I would think about the future. I made a plan and everyone around me knew what that was. ●

HAS SUCCESS CHANGED YOU? In two ways. First it has given me a greater power to get things done. People respect someone who’s achieved something. You have to be careful of that because if you

YOUNG GUNS SMART, DRIVEN & TAKING ON THE WORLD … ALL BEFORE THEY’RE 40. MEET MELBOURNE’S YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS EFFIE KATS,, 26 \ ZACHARY

Who \ Fashion designer and founder of womenswear label Zachary, Effie Kats’ designs have been worn by celebrities from the Kardashians to Kate Hudson, generating annual turnover of around $3 million. How \ “When I started Zachary [in 2013] I’d dropped out of uni courses in photography and public relations. I had a wedding coming up and couldn’t find a dress that was classic, good quality and affordable. “So I went to my father, a tailor, and said I thought there was a gap in the market. I designed five dresses and began selling them through my Instagram account, and I had one rack of clothes in Dad’s factory in Coburg. “A turning point came in 2014 when I saw the Sydney fashion blogger, Antoinette Marie. I showed her my designs and she said she’d wear one of our dresses to her birthday, but months passed. Then, on New Year’s Eve, she wore a Zachary dress and I had 3000 followers overnight. Then the Kardashians requested pieces and, when Kendall Jenner wore one of our crop tops, things went insane. “I’ve opened a store in Chapel Street and our head office has moved out of Dad’s place. We have 22 employees now and I’m looking at opening a store interstate and international opportunities.” The challenges \ “I had no fashion background – just a belief in my vision. I had to teach myself the business.” The reward \ “My first cheeky purchase late last year was a black Louis Vuitton bag with my initials engraved into it. It’s my first designer handbag and the love of my life!” Top tip \ “Follow your instincts and your passion.” ● TIM GURNER, 34 \ GURNER TM

Who \ Founder of Gurner TM, a luxury property business with more than $2.5 billion in projects under development. How \ “I studied commerce, got fed up and started my first business, a gym, when I was 19. It was my biggest risk to date – I borrowed $150,000 – and I sold it after two-and-a-half years because I wanted to get into property. “I met Morry Schwartz who owns Pan Urban and that was my first step into development. Within six months he gave me 30 per cent of the business and we worked together for three or four years. I learnt a lot. After the GFC, I started Urban Inc and I began to notice that buyers were very interested in the intricacies of design and quality. So fourand-a-half-years ago I started Gurner to focus on iconic locations. I’m still on top of every detail of each project and I still follow my gut – if it doesn’t feel right, I don’t do it.” The challenges \ “Every project teaches us something. There have been projects where we didn’t make much money, but I enjoyed the problem solving.” The reward \ “Last year we bought a farm at Flinders. I have two girls and bought the farm so they can turn off the TV and run around.” Top tip \ “Be obsessed about what you do.” ● wo r d s \ s a r a h m a r i n o s pi c t u r e \ S cot t M c N au g h to n

But I graduated during the GFC and my first job was telephone sales in a computer equipment company. I helped other friends grow their businesses and launched my first business when I was 24 – an online custom-tailored clothing business. “When I bought my home in Melbourne, mum told me I wasn’t allowed to go to IKEA. I didn’t want to spend $15,000 on a couch but there weren’t a lot of options. Seville Estate Shiraz 2013 (Yarra Valley) $36; 13.5%

This is a blend of 70 per cent cabernet, 15 per cent merlot, 10 per cent malbec and 5 per cent petit verdot. With dark berries, cassis and spice, its perfume is layered and complex. It’s the same in the mouth, with amazing fine-boned tannins, structure and vibrancy. Its concentration is amazing. For all that, it’s seamless and has high drinkability. ●

There’s one problem with Oakridge’s single vineyard series wines and that is they’re all good. Choosing a favourite is a little like choosing a favourite child. There’s delightful perfumed dark-berry aromas, plus a little forest floor, spice and stalk. Seductively silky, there’s a great flow through the mouth, with energetic acidity and fine tannins. ●

I’m a sucker for this style of shiraz. It’s also a grape that’s a dark horse in the Yarra Valley. With dark cherries, raspberry, cedar and blackberry aromas and flavours, there’s a perfume that starts on the nose and carries through to the finish. It’s concentrated, but not intense, and a bright line of acid gives it elegance. The fine tannins offer a glossy grip. ●

n a town where food trends and players come and go, where punters queue for gelato and play dumpling roulette, where we obsess over the latest in places and forget about others, a few restaurants have truly stood the test of time. These are the blue-chip shares of dining, where you know you’ll leave satisfied. They are restaurants that have reached cult status through sheer hard work and dedication to hospitality, achieving an inexplicable je ne sais quoi. It’s the constitution of the place, it’s the vibe, it’s (in the case of Flower Drum at least) the Mapo. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

FLOWER DRUM \ Since 1975

When we talk about “party atmosphere”, the bar at Di Stasio is where it’s at. Career waiters swan around in white jackets and black bow ties, eager to pour another drink or share another joke. At the helm are Ronnie Di Stasio and Mallory Wall, who’ve been flitting about this fun zone for almost 30 years. Their secret? A sense of freedom and conviviality that can only be described as #Italianality. The “No Foto” policy ensures privacy for late-night trysts and trust-fund babies. Beloved by fab food critics Dani Valent and John Lethlean, among others, the menu is simple, seasonal and wine-friendly. Pasta made twice daily, shellfish with garlic butter and muslin-wrapped lemon to catch the pips, as if to say, “we know what you want before you do”. ●

At Flower Drum, those in the know leave it to restaurant manager Jason Lui or one of his team to pick a menu. Jason’s father, chef and owner Anthony Lui, took over the reins from his mentor and original owner Gilbert Lau (now of Lau’s Family Kitchen) in 2000. What keeps the fire burning in Anthony’s belly? “The faces of happy diners leaving the table and their empty plates returning to my kitchen” – where he continues to man the pass after 36 years. Consistency is the key, from the attentive service to the way the elevator takes its time delivering you to the top, reminding you to slow down and relax. “Flower Drum is my benchmark,” says veteran food writer Rita Erlich. ●

If you’re after a shucking good time, then France-Soir is your oyster. Since 1986, Jean-Paul Prunetti has provided late-night pundits of pleasurable eating with their fill of filet de boeuf, escargot and steak tartare. The tartare is the stuff of legend: pasture-fed O’Connor beef, minced by hand (as it should be) with an array of brunoise-cut condiments such as shallots and cornichon folded through. It’s a favourite of those in the know, including chef George Calombaris and food journalist Necia Wilden, who is “convinced they pipe mood enhancers through the air-conditioning”. Described as “a haven for visiting dignitaries and celebrities”, this is the sort of place where you’ll want to keep a close eye over your shoulder if you’re a fan of seeing and being seen. Stay a while – the kitchen’s open until midnight. ●

In his tome Melbourne: The Making of a Drinking and Eating Capital, food writer and Melbournophile Michael Harden describes Grossi Florentino as ever-evolving, “reinvent(ing) every day … with superb produce and consistently brilliant cooking”. Since the building’s first turn as a wine cafe in the late 1890s to the opening of the original Cafe Florentino in 1928, to three generations of Grossi generosity post-1999, this stayer is basically the Madonna of Bourke Street. Guy Grossi’s menu is profoundly Italian with an indulgent approach – like his pasta dough, which has been known to use five times the usual egg yolk quota. The resulting sunny-hued dishes come adorned with what’s good – pine mushrooms, zucchini or, in the case of his smoked ricotta-filled “Ravioli All’Uovo”, yet more yolk. ●

Look up “if you build it, they will come” in the dictionary, and you’ll see the determined, dirt-smeared faces of Alla and Allan Wolf Tasker, who have turned a shrubby swamp into one of Victoria’s most successful restaurants over the past 32 years, inspiring a plethora of tree-changing chefs and producers. Theirs is a highly produce-driven menu, with a regularly updated letter at the front – detailing what the weather’s been up to and how it’s affecting your plate, be it the Skipton eel or the Angelica carrots. There’s a real sense of place and a connection with the land in a decidedly un-didactic way. Founding Good Food Guide editor Claude Forell is most taken with Alla’s aptitude for vegetables, offering that “few places cater as well to vegetarians”. Come for the Springs, stay for the spring onion. ●

PR executive turned anti-waste campaigner Tamara DiMattina defines success as working for a better world rather than a better pay cheque Tamara DiMattina has just emerged from Churchill’s War Rooms in London – the bunkers where the British planned their actions during WWII. The previous day she toured the renowned Kew Gardens. Along the way, she is gathering ideas for her campaigns. “At Kew Gardens they ask people to recycle their tour guides rather than throwing them away – I haven’t seen that before,” she says.

A DIFFERENT DRUM Tamara began her public relations career working in consumer public relations but quickly felt a sense of disquiet. “I felt bad busting a gut to get people to buy plastic toys and lollies that they didn’t need,” she says. So she began her own PR agency and worked with clients she felt were engineering positive change, such as the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre. “There isn’t much money in working on campaigns that improve community and society. You sacrifice big-paying clients to work with people who generally don’t have much money to promote the good things they are doing,” she says. But a trip to India convinced Tamara she was on the right path. “I saw a lot of the waste from the West – it goes there to be recycled. You see how much we have and how much we waste. That same year I went to Antarctica to learn about climate change and that hammered home to me that we have finite resources and we need to be less wasteful.” In 2010 she used her PR and marketing savvy to launch Buy Nothing New Month, which each October encourages people to shop less and recycle more – like FebFast for wasteful consumption. Her latest project, The New Joneses, encourages consumers to choose cleaner energy, to use their buying power to support ethical businesses and to reduce food waste. Tamara doesn’t just talk the talk; her home in Abbotsford is filled with recycled and second-hand treasures. Even her beloved (now dearly departed) French bulldog Leopold came to her “second-hand” when his previous owner had to find him a new home. “I don’t have kids so I can take risks. I’ve given up the security of a regular pay cheque but I want to see a better world,” she says. “Success to me is recognising when you have enough. I’m not saying poverty is the key to happiness but we can be happier with less.” ● » thenewjoneses.com » buynothingnew.com.au NEXT PAGE \ THE DIGITAL T NOMAD & THE HUMANITARIAN TAL T TARIAN

The Digital Nomad

For adventure-seeking lawyer Shanti Rubens, success is being able to run a thriving law practice without being tied to the nine-to-five After studying law and commerce at the University of Melbourne, Shanti Rubens joined a top-tier international law firm, acting for corporations in Australia, the UK, Dubai and Canada. In 2003 he began his own legal practice, Rubens Legal, and for several years ran his business from Melbourne, with a one- or two-month summer break to travel. “I quickly learnt that the sky didn’t fall in when I travelled and that I could maintain my legal practice with my laptop and mobile. In 2010, I decided to work like that on a permanent basis. I closed my office, rented out my house, took my business online and worked remotely,” says Shanti. Describing himself as a digital nomad, Shanti says his online business, Legal Zebra, is flourishing. Currently in Mexico after a month in Los Angeles, Shanti will return to Melbourne before heading to Thailand later this year. “People don’t really need to see each other face-to-face, and they communicate via email or the phone even when they are in the same city,” he says. “My business hasn’t missed a beat – I’ll sit in a cafe in Mexico and draft contracts for clients. I make lots of calls to my clients so they know I am very available.” Shanti initially went on the road for three-and-a-half years. A long-time yoga devotee, he has been travelling to India to practise ashtanga yoga. “I’ve lived among the poorest people in the world in Cuba, Cambodia and India, and I’ve hung out with some

The Humanitarian

Like his uncle Peter, the former federal treasurer, Elliot Costello grew up with a love of numbers, a passion that led him to work for some major financial institutions including PricewaterhouseCoopers. “I had a passion for being entrepreneurial and making money – grandma joked I’d make the money for the family,” says Elliot, son of World Vision CEO Tim Costello. “But underneath that desire to work in the private sector and to live a comfortable life, I had this passion for working in the humanitarian sector. “Over time that began to consume my thoughts.” While at university studying commerce and international relations, Elliot travelled to the Middle East, India and Latin America to volunteer in some of the poorest communities.

(CHRIS HOPKINS)

Former high-flying financial analyst, now YGAP chief executive, Elliot Costello measures success by the number of lives he can help improve

In 2008, he and friends began YGAP – Y Generation Against Poverty – to fund-raise and support locally run projects around the world that provide education, access to health care, employment opportunities and housing. Initially, YGAP was a project on the side for Elliot but in 2013 he left finance to work for the charity full time. “It grew to a point where a leap of faith was required,” he says. “When you go to the not-for-profit sector you make a financial sacrifice. And you no longer turn up to work, switch your brain on and switch it off when you leave the office. In this sector you try and find the best solutions to help people living on the frontline of poverty and you’re constantly switched on.” Elliot says his decision has brought success on a personal level. “Two weeks ago I was in South Africa visiting ventures we’re supporting in local communities. When I spend time in the field, I see how the work we do is having an impact on lives and I realise the decision to leave the corporate sector was the right one,” he says. “We have a clear objective that by mid-2018 YGAP will improve the lives of one million people living in poverty … My personal idea of success is very closely tied to that. Early in my career, success was measured on promotion, job titles and on bonuses at the end of the financial year. “Now I measure success on the lives we’ve improved.” ● » ygap.com.au

of the wealthiest people in San Francisco,” he says. “The world is so big and there is always another adventure to be had. I’ve never been to the African continent or Japan and I want to explore those.” Shanti spends half his year travelling while working on Rubens Legal and his online Legal Zebra, and says for him success is being able to work on his own terms. “People are focused on making money but the things

people work for beyond a car and a house are superfluous to their happiness. The things that make us happy are our human connections,” he says. “To see the world, to have time to enjoy a coffee without having to rush off to the next thing – that’s success to me.” ● » legalzebra.com.au

uxury and penthouses go together like champagne and caviar. Penthouses are all about glamour, wealth and prestige. You are at the top of the heap and – usually – at the top of the tower. From the $400 million Sky Penthouse in the Odeon Tower in Monaco to London’s $237 million One Hyde Park Penthouse, the mega-rich have always gravitated to the upper levels of exclusive buildings at prestige addresses. Views and scarcity are among the drawcards of penthouse life. Australia has developed a heritage, not only of apartment living but of living in the sky. Traditionally the penthouse is on the top floor of an apartment building, whether it be seven floors or 70 floors above the ground. Then there are sub-penthouses, which often occupy two or three floors below the penthouse. When it comes to our most famous residential tower, Eureka, its architect Karl Fender of Fender Katsalidis Architects simply says: “When is a penthouse not a penthouse? My wife Sarah and I live on level 73 of the 88-floor building. We have half a floor and up that high you experience the views and different weather patterns so that no two days are alike.” Apartment living may not be for everyone, but for Karl it is decidedly “better than looking at a paling fence with a lawnmower on the other side”. He says privacy, far less household maintenance and the convenience of the Southbank location are other winning attributes. “I am not one that wants maintenance issues. A gym or pool or home theatre, if you have them in a house, represent a great capital outlay. It’s amazing how private living in an apartment is, but you meet people at the pool or gym. The location suits my work, my morning routine running along the banks of the Yarra and my travel. “I can look out the window in the morning and decide which route to take if I am going to use the car.” When the 297-metre-tall Eureka Tower was finished in 2006, it was the tallest residential building in the world. It is now the 108th-tallest. Karl and Sarah, who have lived at Eureka for 10 years, haven’t lived in a house since 1974. “We lived in apartments in London, Boston and Bangkok and when we came back to Melbourne in 1995 we continued to live the way we liked. It’s a very elegant way of living.” The penthouse market is linked to the residential housing market, says Mark Dayman, director of Marshall White Projects. “The empty-nester or downsizer sees the strength in the residential market and the increase in the value of their home over the past five years so they think it’s a good time to sell,” he says. “They like to buy off the plan and typically will consolidate two 70-square-metre apartments into one penthouse and get the architect to create a bespoke offering. “They want a lock-up-and-leave proposition, so they can travel and then come back to the place exactly as they left it. If they have an adult child or student with them, two or three car spaces are important.” The entry point for a penthouse in Melbourne is between $1.2 million and $2 million, and Mark says buyers often stick to buying within a kilometre of their former home. Penthouses are not just appearing in off-the-plan developments. In blue-chip Toorak, penthouses in older-style buildings are being renovated and given a new lease of life. John Gdanski and his wife, property developer Gaby Tomkin, have spent 18 months renovating their 1970 two-level penthouse at 16 Woorigoleen Road. The couple love the exclusivity of penthouse living. “You are literally the king or queen of the castle,” Gaby says.

“We have 360-degree views of all of Melbourne. We have views to Port Phillip Bay and to the Dandenong Ranges. “It’s special because you have your own separate entrance code and a lift that goes directly to your level. You walk out and are in your own lobby area.” The private lift lobby opens into the 525-square-metre interior where glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows wo r d s \ m a r i a h a r r i s pi c t u r e \ m i ch a el r ay n er

open to north-west-facing terraces with a built-in teppanyaki barbecue and outdoor kitchen. Gaby took out as many walls as possible to create their open-plan, light-filled, four-bedroom house in the sky. The original staircase was fitted with a modern metal rail, the designer kitchen has Miele appliances and there is a butler’s pantry. They kept the walk-in safe, which she says is like a “little metal room with 30-centimetre-wide walls”. Retired partner of a city law firm, Andrew Marks has lived in his 188-square, three-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse in Beaconsfield Parade, Middle Park for more than 13 years. He recently renovated the property. “What one likes about it is the exclusivity and privacy of it and the 17-metre-wide frontage, which is the largest in Beaconsfield Parade. It is a true penthouse as it is at the top of the building,” he says. ● mharris@theweeklyreview.com.au » Sotheby’s International Realty is selling the penthouse at 16 Woorigoleen Road, Toorak. His davealred.com approach starts with rebranding anxiety as excitement.

1

MAKE ANXIETY PRODUCTIVE You should stop thinking of anxiety as a weakness, understand it as a normal reaction to pressure, and use it as a high-octane fuel to achieve your goals.

2

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE “If I could pass a law in parliament, it would be to delete three words: never, always and can’t.” Careless, clumsy use of negative language can destroy confidence, which prevents you performing well under pressure.

3

WATCH YOUR POSTURE The “command posture” involves standing as if you’re in total control of your environment. “Act like you already know the result. Act like it’s going to be great.”

4

STOP THINKING ABOUT FAILURE Good coaches give specific feedback focusing on what went right. “That was a really good shot because your posture was very angular and it made you shift forward. In other words, this was really good because you did X, Y and Z. Now I’ve given you the tools to repeat that.”

5

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Keeping the focus on the process, rather than the outcome, allows you to perform even when something unforeseen occurs. “Chaos can be very productive, if you look for opportunities that come.” ●

SISTER ACT female entrepreneurs are creating new ways to connect

S

heree Rubinstein’s journey to the burgeoning world of women’s networking groups began while she was working at a corporate law firm and musing on gender inequality in the workplace “that I had no idea about until I started working full-time”. “That sent me on a journey of inquiry and discovering that there was a very strong passion,” Sheree says. “I found my voice for championing women in business.” Sheree, 28, last year offered her network of women in business a one-week escape to an Airbnb-listed mansion in St Kilda. “We said, ‘There are events every day, there’s meditation every morning, there are lunches, speakers, everything; you pay to attend, come and see what it’s about.’ “We had 400 people. That was when we knew there was a need and desire for a space and a community that really connected with women in business.” Convinced women were seeking support and a different way of networking, 18 months ago Sheree launched One Roof, a co-working space that is dedicated to female entrepreneurs, as well as access to networking events. One Roof, which has also launched in Los Angeles, now has 45 members who either rent a private office in the Southbank space or in the co-working area where they hot-desk.

“We’ve engaged with more than 10,000 female entrepreneurs across Australia and the US and hosted more than 300 educational workshops to support our members in growing their businesses.” Sheree is one of many – often young – women driving a rapidly growing “community” of networking groups. She partners with other groups, among them The League of Extraordinary Women (LEW), Like-Minded Bitches Drinking Wine (LMBDW), Inspiring Rare Birds, and Melbourne-based Miss Collective. These groups cater to women hoping to “upskill”, move careers, run a business from home, or network with like-minded women. “I meet so many women who have gone on maternity leave and don’t know what to do next and are looking to do something,” says Sheree. “I often meet these incredibly talented, skilled women but they don’t know how to run a business. “With One Roof we are trying to build this eco-system that offers support to say, ‘We can help you with the basics of setting up a business or building a website, connect to the community’. The workplace is changing, people are moving to freelance and working in a remote, mobile way. That’s where the trend’s going.”

“Many female business owners have come from a corporate team environment and have left their jobs in search of career flexibility,” Danielle says. “Faced with working alone in their new business they feel isolated and crave connection with others who understand. “Females often lack self-belief and confidence in the early stages of growing their business. By networking in women-only groups they feel comfortable enough to be involved and talk honestly without fear of feeling insecure or inexperienced.” Sydney-based Gen George and Jane Lu launched Like-Minded Bitches Drinking Wine (LMBDW) last October. joining each day. They have a presence in seven cities around the world and run monthly events in every major city and some regional centres across Australia. There is a strong sense of community among the various groups with many partnering with each other. “It’s all about connecting people to collaborate, learn from each other and help people grow their business,” says Gen, 25. “We encourage other groups to post what they’re about and what they’re doing because it means people will find what suits them and what makes them successful.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

Sheryl Thai, who left a corporate career in IT to start her own business, Cupcake Central, co-founded The League of Extraordinary Women in 2011 with three like-minded businesswomen. She agrees that work pathways have changed. “The rise of women-led businesses comes from the notion that now, more than ever, we have life choices other than the traditional corporate career path,” Sheryl says. “We are able to dream bigger and turn our passions into profitable, successful and extraordinary companies.” Sheryl cites 2015 Australian Bureau of Statistics figures that state over the past two decades there has been a 46 per cent increase in the number of women business owners in Australia and more than a third of operators are women. She says LEW has organised more than 200 events across Australia involving more than 10,000 women and its online community now numbers 95,000, “each looking for a community or place where they can make genuine connections and be inspired by one another”. Steph Webster and Kara Jenkins co-founded the Melbourne-based Miss Collective in 2015, running events and workshops for women “looking for the next level of their careers, looking for the right skills or to change”. “There’s a lot of opportunity to improve the female participation rate,” says Steph. Sheree Rubinstein agrees. “It’s fantastic that it’s become the forefront of our conversation because we need to close the gender gap in entrepreneurship,” she says. “We need to be creating substantial change. We need to be encouraging young girls to enter entrepreneurship, but encouragement is only one step. The next step is how do you teach them enterprising skills.” Danielle Price, 38, runs the Footscray-based networking group She Will Shine. Since launching in 2014, 700 women have attended monthly events and many are moving from a team to working alone.

T

here are traditional measures of success and one of them has always been your car. And by this measure Australians are doing very well indeed; the luxury car market has never been as successful as it is right now and there are no signs of a slowdown. Whether it’s an Audi A1 or a Ferrari – or anything in between – Australians have never bought more. The figures speak for themselves. In 2000 Australians bought 787,100 new vehicles, in 2015 we bought 1,155,408, an increase of 47 per cent. In the same period

sales of BMWs have risen by 161 per cent, Mercedes-Benzes by 185 per cent and Audis 665 per cent. Bentley sales are up by an astounding 1217 per cent and Rolls-Royce by 1400 per cent. Lotus sales have doubled, Ferrari’s have almost tripled, both Maserati and Lamborghini are up by almost 10 times and Aston Martin sales are up by 13 times. Porsche sales have increased by almost 500 per cent, Land Rover/Range Rover sales have doubled and Volvo is up 63 per cent. In fact the only prestige brand I could spot that’s down is Alfa Romeo.

Now consider the luxury brands that have come along since 2000: Infiniti sold 574 cars in 2015, McLaren 36 and Mini 3342. Prestige sales are still going up. So do more people have more money or are the rich getting richer? It’s neither; prestige cars don’t cost a whole lot more now than they did back then and, in many cases, they’re cheaper, despite being vastly safer and better-equipped. Wages have grown, thus many more people can splurge on what they’ve always aspired to drive. Consider this: In 2000, a mid-range

Mercedes C240 cost $73,000 plus on-roads, way more than the average Australian income of $45,000. Right now a C250 costs $76,513 drive away – less than the average income of $87,000. At the same time, a BMW X5 was $108,000 plus on-roads in 2000; now X5s start under $100,000. Audi’s priciest A6 was $135,400 plus on-roads in 2000, now it’s $137,190 drive away. And the big brands have all introduced smaller, cheaper entry-level models since then to tempt more people into their brands and, hopefully, keep them there. With Audi it’s the A1, BMW has the 1-series and Mercedes-Benz the A-class. Now a Corolla can cost more than some German brands: a Corolla ZR sedan is $34,810 drive away while you can drive out in an Audi A1 for $31,500. Finance options are more attractive too. Novated leases on work cars make prestige brands tempting and they’ve exploded in popularity. So if you think you’re seeing more prestige cars around, you are. And if you think it’s a sign Australians are richer, well that’s right too but not nearly so much. ● ROD EASDOWN reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

CARTIER \ Santos 100 carbon

ROLEX \ Day-Date President

Louis Cartier created the Santos watch in 1904, sealing his friendship with the aviator of the same name, Alberto Santos-Dumont, who you might have noticed in the opening ceremony of Rio 2016 “flying” out of the stadium. A close-up of his wrist, if it were historically accurate, would have shown the rounded angles and exposed screws of a watch that has true claim to icon status. Cartier marked the centenary of the watch with a blacked-out steel model with a scratch-resistant ADLC coating and automatic 1847 MC Manufacture movement. ● RRP $10,700

What do you get for the leader in your life – male, female, young, old – who has everything? Are you kidding? You get them a Rolex Day-Date or “The President’s watch” as it’s been known ever since American presidents such as Lyndon B. Johnson made it their timekeeper of choice. Chances are those to the power born either have one or they’ve got one picked out. It’s the ultimate wrist symbol of success and, with an ever-increasing array of style icons wearing it – including Justin Timberlake on his recent hit Can’t Stop the Feeling! – it has by no means had its day. ● RRP $47,550

LONGINES \ Master Collection Moon Phase

While the classic look is often imitated, there’s nothing quite like the real thing and few brands do timeless better than Longines. This model has it all: alligator strap, polished gold case and the trusty Longines calibre L678, which you can see through the clear sapphire crystal caseback. This watch packs a serious functional punch too, with chronograph, complete calendar and moon-phase complications. ● RRP $12,775

OMEGA GA \ Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial

wo r d s \ A n d r e w M c U tch en

It’s the Omega dive watch du jour and, thanks to its Bond connection and vintage-inspired colour scheme, it can be worn with anything. And by that I really do mean anything. The Spectre limited edition came standard on a striped black and grey NATO strap and fits as well with a tuxedo as it does swimming trunks. The two-tone Sedna gold and steel version steps up the luxe. It is the watch for every mission, be that on land, sea or boardroom. ● RRP $7975

Andrew McUtchen is the founder of timeandtidewatches.com – Australia’s most popular wristwatch website.

AUDEMARS PIGUET \ Royal Oak perpetual calendar

On the style front, the Portugieser Automatic is more sensitive, artistic gent than alpha male, despite its almost imposing size. The design is based on twin pillars of heft and authenticity as, unlike many modern watches, it has always been huge for the simple reason that the watch that inspired it housed a pocket watch movement and was used by mariners. Manly stuff indeed. You could also sub in the IWC Big Pilot as the new range has plenty of dressy variations in precious metals perfect for suit duty. ● RRP $17,800

IWC \ Portugieser

No watch wins over more influential people, in my opinion, than the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. With its octagonal case (and those unmistakable exposed screws) it’s the face that has launched a thousand watch imitators. Its proportions are millimetre-perfect in all sizes – it runs from a 36mm version to the “Jumbo” 41mm – and, while it’s not common, it is iconic enough to appeal to watch lovers as well as those with a keen eye for quality. In terms of the message this watch sends, the Royal Oak quietly confirms that rumours of your going up in the world are well-founded. ● RRP $86,000

SCHOOL’S OUT WITH NIKKI KIRKUP

About Nikki

Nikki Kirkup is the director of middle years at Melbourne Girls Grammar and uses her passion for drama and English to inspire students to bring their work to life in the classroom. special promotion

WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION AT SCHOOL & WHY? I was always in awe of the commitment and dedication of the teachers I encountered as a student. Although there were many I admired, my English teachers always stood out above others. I’ve also found inspiration among my English teaching colleagues.

TELL US HOW YOU GOT INTO TEACHING During high school in the UK, I was very shy and lacking in confidence – until sixth form when I attended drama workshops and participated in amateur shows. The workshops had been suggested by my English teacher. During my first summer break after my first year at the University of Leeds, I returned home and was helping out in a theatre workshop run by this English teacher. He was curious as to how my studies were progressing and while I was enjoying my time at uni, I was concerned that I did not really have a future plan. He suggested I teach English and invited me to do some support classes back in my old school. After a week, I was hooked! I added education studies to my degree and graduated as an English and drama teacher.

While I was on teaching practice, I was observing the teachers and had supported some of them for only a few days when a teacher called in sick. A cover teacher could not be found at such late notice – so, they politely asked (begged) me if I would step in. So, my first class was year 11 boys’ English. They were studying John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and were not enjoying it. I read the teacher’s notes and quickly decided I would not enjoy it either if I were to follow the plan. I decided to change it! Looking back, this was a fairly bold move but I simply couldn’t sit back and watch the students hate this text the way they did. I decided we needed to bring it to life a little. We pushed back the chairs and desks and all took on a role. We were acting it out! The teacher returned after three days and was surprised to hear not only the accents the boys had developed when reading the text but also that they actually “got it”.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH MELBOURNE GIRLS GRAMMAR? I relocated to Melbourne in July 2015 with my partner Brendan. Having spent the previous eight years working in Switzerland, we were ready for a new challenge. When the opportunity arose to work at Melbourne Girls Grammar, I jumped at the chance. My initial interview took place while I was on vacation in Dubai, via Skype. I was delighted to have the chance to discuss education with [principal] Catherine Misson. I quickly realised how aligned our values were and our philosophy regarding girls’ education. 30 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 24, 2016

ere’s a house that makes hearts go pit-a-pat. It has character, individuality and all the prettiest heritage-style trimmings in its facade, from colourful leadlight panes to bay windows, and cast-iron turned verandah posts to chimney pots atop the hip and gable roof. The vendor admits he fell in love with the block-fronted house when he first set eyes on it in 1985, probably as did its original owner in 1904. “I felt an instant connection to it,” he says. “I could see the potential it had, and the big block of land. I’ll certainly be sooky the day we leave.” The selling agent says its owners are not the only people to feel an emotional attachment. “Everyone knows it,” says Stephen Tickell from Hocking Stuart. “It’s one of Hampton’s most beautiful and iconic period homes and it really tugs at the heart strings the moment you see it.” That the vendors have spent three decades at this address also says much about the location. It is 750 metres from the beach and Bay Trail and half that from Hampton station. Hampton Street’s 1.5-kilometre stretch of boutique shops meets the end of Thomas Street; it would take a month of Sundays to try every cafe, bar and eatery but you’re welcome to give it a go. Primary and secondary schools, public and private, are easily reached by foot, bike, bus or train. Close, too, is a neighbourhood playground at Alexander Park. The area has changed since the vendors settled here with their three youngsters, and so has the house. A lean-to and hobby shed were demolished for an extension incorporating an open-plan family/meals area, kitchen and bedroom, then a rear deck and pool in the deep garden. The front of the house was renovated. Cosy living and dining rooms, opposite two bedrooms off a central hall, each have a fireplace, high ceilings and decorative plasterwork. A few years later, the rear bedroom made way for a staircase (plus study nook and store room) up to a first-floor bedroom, bathroom and rumpus room with balcony. The striking double-storey weatherboard extension has the same warm white paintwork and charcoal corrugated-iron roof of the facade. However, it takes a leaf from the Hamptons stylebook with a casual beach look, white timber balustrades and rows of multipaned floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors to the east and south. Having a sunset deck with views to the bay, plus a lower deck looking across the pool and spa in the easy-care garden, is the height of indulgence but it’s also practical – the family can stay together or separate when entertaining friends. Bedrooms are well zoned, suitable for multigenerational families or those with teenagers. The bedrooms at the rear (one upstairs, one down) have an adjacent bathroom and the two bedrooms at the front of the house share a large, contemporary bathroom with a bath. The family room and kitchen is a relaxed and comfortable space, offering potential to modernise and upgrade at leisure. The kitchen has black granite benches, an island bench/ breakfast bar, beech cabinetry and glass splashback, and it faces the family room’s open fireplace – another heart to this family house. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Do you like seeing green? This house captures the colour perfectly with a garden of tropical plants and views across Elsternwick Park. A recent inspection buzzed with prospective buyers and neighbours who’ve admired the residence since it was built 20 years ago. Innovative architecture, great use of glass and individual finishes ensure it is a stylish stayer. Behind a security porch, the foyer has a mosaic-tiled wall and water features. Ground level comprises a laundry, bathroom, two bedrooms and family room/study with bifold doors to the back terrace and garden. This compact, lush space has a pond and towering pandanus palms. Upstairs, the living and dining hub has a parquetry floor and gas-log fireplace but a park-facing glass wall allows the view to steal the show. The main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and en suite, enjoys seclusion at the rear. The kitchen has black granite benchtops and a 900-millimetre oven. ● KAY KEIGHERY

GLEN IRIS \ 2 VINCENT STREET This early Californian bungalow had a clever refurbishment 10 years ago and the best features of two eras remain. Hardwood floors and beamed ceilings are intact. Hydronic heating and air-conditioning units take care of the climate. Double doors link the entrance hall, sitting room and dining room, plus a new terrace and site-wide family room. The north side of the house contains the main suite, with two walls of built-in cupboards and a sunny bathroom. Beyond it is a study/ guest suite with a concealed fold-down bed and its own bathroom. The attic space is now a children’s world – three ample bedrooms, a bathroom and a study, all air-conditioned. The living, dining and kitchen area is the heart of the house, with its family-scaled appliances, pantry and laundry. There’s a bathroom with external access here, too. The family zone gives way to a wide terrace. A section of its pergola is adjustable, making barbecues possible rain or shine. The rear section of the site is a new version of the old backyard. It offers a sitting area, lawn and swimming pool. The pool has gas/ solar heating and a nearby spa. Buried rainwater tanks drought-proof the front and back gardens. This attractive family house, between High Street and Wattletree Road and their trams, is close to many good schools. ● NEIL CLEREHAN

This double-fronted Victorian house with park views has a picture-perfect picket fence and classic period facade. Inside, it’s a textbook example of retaining period character while opening up new spaces. Bifold doors open the north-facing living area to the decked backyard. This space has a marble fireplace, polished floorboards and ceiling roses. A vast island bench runs the length of the stone kitchen, which has a stainless-steel Ilve oven. There’s a study with built-in desk and storage, and french doors to a lightwell. The main bedroom, at the entrance, has a dressing room that leads into an en suite with mosaic tiles and a conservatory-style ceiling. The formal lounge across the hall has a fireplace and a frosted-glass internal window to the living area at the rear. Three big bedrooms upstairs have built-in desks and views of Docklands. They share a bathroom with turquoise and emerald-green tiles. The light rail is at the doorstep. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

Less than 800 metres from Brighton’s bathing boxes, this single-level residence will appeal to downsizers who don’t want to change postcode. Built more than two decades ago, the house is one of three and is towards the back of the block. A gated entry takes you down a long driveway to a single-car garage. Set well back from New Street, the house is private and quiet. A portico entrance, preceded by a wrought-iron fence, opens to a cosy living room with wood fireplace and grey carpet. The kitchen and meals area, with north-east light streaming in through french windows and doors, is a casual place to relax. The handsome kitchen has dark granite benchtops, lots of cabinetry and a breakfast bar. There are two carpeted bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom has an en suite, with a separate shower and generous corner bath. With Dendy Cinemas and Church Street village just around the corner, this house epitomises easy living. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

A two-minute walk to the beach is one of the main attractions of this cream-hued house in a no-through road. Another is its commanding presence on a 1485-square-metre block, which has more than enough room for a tennis court or pool in the sprawling backyard. Jon Friedrich Architects designed this

Georgian-inspired house 20 years ago as a corporate entertainer. Hence its several cavernous living spaces and its commercial-style kitchen with seven-burner cooktop and double oven beneath a domed skylight. Centred around a grand foyer are the formal living and dining zone, which has a chandelier, a living room with bar and, at the rear, a vast

living, dining and kitchen area. This space opens to the long stretch of lawn and an outdoor kitchen with barbecue. There’s also a teenage or guest retreat with lounge room/bedroom, kitchenette and bathroom. The rest happens upstairs in the main house. At the top of the carpeted, sweeping staircase that rises from the grand foyer, are a library

and four bedrooms with built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom takes up one wing and incorporates his and hers walk-in wardrobes and an enormous bathroom with spa. A deep, wide terrace looks over the playground below and across the rooftops of period properties and modern masters that inhabit this golden mile of real estate on the beach side of St Kilda Street. ● HARBANT GILL

CAULFIELD NORTH \ 123 NORMANBY BY RO BY ROA OAD Named after the town north of Ballarat where its first owners came from, Tourello is a noteworthy house resplendent with original features. Whatever the owners did in Tourello, it was likely gold-related and seemingly lucrative. In 1906, after selecting a prime block of 808 square metres close to the railway line, they poured a pretty penny into a grand and solid construction. Tourello enchants from first sight. Tessellated tiles on the front verandah are original, and there’s lovely leadlight around the front door. The front lounge has a corner fireplace. Across the hall is another sitting room, with a box-bay window and fireplace. The massive main bedroom has its own fireplace and bay window. Next door is a dressing room or walk-in wardrobe. Further down the hall, the modernised main bathroom has a shower over a spa bath. Concluding the house, the kitchen, dining and living area is in an extension to the original house. Along with the original oven, the kitchen has contemporary appliances. Then there’s the garden. A wide space along the property’s south-eastern boundary, it’s tranquil, established and fruitful. A deck and terrace provide settings for garden parties. The double carport connects with a workshop. Skip down the lane, and you’re at Caulfield Park. ● KAY KEIGHERY
