hey say be careful what you wish for. As someone who’s never had much interest in playing sport, and even less ability, it’s hard for me to imagine spending a lifetime striving for Olympic gold. I can’t even begin to contemplate the thousands of hours in the gym, the years of pre-dawn starts, the countless missed social engagements and declined slices of cheesecake it takes to be an elite athlete. I cannot imagine what it must take to put your career on hold, your relationships on the back burner, in an all-consuming quest to be faster, better, stronger – to win Olympic gold. Now as a fresh crop of our athletic best set their sights on gold in Rio, I can’t help but wonder if it really is worth the effort. Does the end justify the means? That’s why we asked some of our favourite champions from past Games if winning gold really was all they thought it would be. Read what they had to say inside. Their answers may surprise you. ●

T

hey’re a rarefied breed. Since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, just 267 Australians have brought home a gold medal. For every one of them, this peak of sporting achievement was the culmination of years of sweat, sacrifice and determination – and afterwards, their lives would never be the same. Now as our best sportsmen and women count down the hours to Rio, four past winners reflect on life after gold. ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

T’S with great affection that Libby Trickett reflects on winning gold. “The predominant impact that swimming had on my life was incredibly positive,” Libby says. “I feel incredibly privileged and also blessed that I’ve been able to do what I did for so long.” Libby won her first gold medal in Athens in 2004 as part of the 4 x 100metre freestyle relay. “It was amazing. Just going to an Olympics is an incredible achievement and such a wonderful thing to be a part of.” She went on to win gold again at Beijing in 2008 in the 100metre butterfly. Her Olympic medal tally sits at four gold, one silver and two bronze. Libby says winning gold didn’t change her. “You realise that you’re the same person. It’s a wonderful achievement and a dream come true but it’s not as though you get a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I didn’t feel different. I didn’t feel like I had changed at all.” It was only in retirement, after the 2012 London Games, that Libby felt the impact of gold. “Since retiring I’ve realised that I will always be known as Libby Trickett the swimmer, which is an interesting thing especially when you’re trying to establish yourself as a different person in the real world,” she says. “And it can be hard for the ego at times. I was the best in the world at the age of 23. I’d reached the pinnacle of my sport, my craft. And then it’s – and this isn’t meant to be a negative thing – all downhill from there. I’m probably not going to be the best in the world at anything else.” After so many years devoted to swimming, adjusting to the day-to-day world was not easy. “I’ve retired and come into the real world and you have to learn everything from scratch.” Now 31, Libby lives in Brisbane and juggles caring for her 10-month-old daughter Poppy with working part-time in marketing at a technology company. She is also studying to become a personal trainer in the corporate world. She says that, like many athletes, she struggled transitioning to life after swimming but she’s not complaining. “Pretty much every opportunity that I get now is because of my swimming. I probably will be remembered until I’m on my deathbed as someone who once competed for Australia. I’m now at a point where I’m really proud of that, I can own it and I know that I’m a whole person, that there are other aspects to me, other than just my swimming career.” But there were also negatives in winning gold. “When I started my full-time job you worry that people have these expectations of you that you can’t live up to,” she says. “[That’s] purely generated from my ego and the expectations and pressures that I placed on myself. “There are moments where you think, ‘That was a lifetime ago’ and I’m such a different person. I was 23. I’m 31 now.” ●

OMETIMES Shane Gould says it would be easier if she didn’t have to do the Shane Gould recognition moment. “Sometimes it’s distracting because it’s another persona, like a mask or a character,” Shane says. “I usually have to steer the relationship back to the here and now. I might be doing a transaction with the teller in the bank and, ‘Oh it was amazing, your career, I really admire you’, and you think, ‘This is nice’, and then I have to steer it back saying, ‘Can you put that amount in there please’.” Shane was just 15 when she won five individual medals in the pool at the 1972 Munich Olympics: three gold, one silver and one bronze. That 15-year-old superstar is now 59 and her name is forever linked with those achievements. “People pay so much attention to the medal,” Shane says. “To me it’s the process that changed my life. In order to get a gold medal there’s a bunch of things you have to do to achieve that. I know that if it was a fourth place you probably wouldn’t be talking to me, but I would have gone through the same process to try and achieve a gold medal.” After 30 years living around Margaret River in WA, Shane moved to a small town on the east coast of Tasmania seven years ago. Her four children are grown up. She says winning gold has had positives and negatives. “There are difficulties but there are incredible opportunities to be had. I love it. I’ve got a really healthy ego. It’s an identity. I embrace that. “For me my positive was the athlete experience. I had no injuries, there was no abuse. I was respected among the squad, respected in the community, I had a sense of belonging to a sporting community. It gave me a strong identity, I learnt a lot about my body, I was given accolades and attention, which was good for my sense of self-worth. “The negative experience was that I get locked in the past. That was a snapshot in time; it’s as though one still image represents a person’s life. It precludes the narrative of me as a growing human being by locking me in the past, and that can be really frustrating.” Shane says that when people keep saying ‘you’re amazing’, you start to believe it. “And amazing in every aspect of your life, not just [sport]. It sets you apart and makes you feel really special but that can isolate you. And you’re expected to be not only a good swimmer but a good speaker, you’re supposed to enjoy meeting strangers, you’re supposed to have expertise in politics and make comments. These expectations are quite unrealistic. It’s like a role where you get attributed other capacities.” ●

RUSSELL MARK

USSELL Mark’s children have “Olympic Day” coming up at school, and they would like to take to school the gold medal dad won in shooting at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. The medals have been on display at the Gallery of Sport museum since 2000. Russell’s proudest moments are when his children realise what dad achieved. “This is probably where you understand the impact it has,” he says. Winning gold was a life-changer for Russell. “When I jumped off the plane [in Atlanta in 1996] I was a full-time professional real estate valuer and when I came home I was a full-time professional shooter. “I was offered a contract by Beretta [the biggest shotgun manufacturer in the world] on the night I won gold. I spoke to my father and said, ‘I can probably make more money shooting than I can valuing real estate’. [His contract with Beretta finishes at the end of this year].” Winning gold set Russell up financially. “I was blessed because there was a home Olympics coming up [in 2000] and there was a lot of money around for Olympic sport,” he says. “I got some very good endorsements from some very big companies like Telstra and Ansett. My father owned a big real estate company in Werribee. He always had a business brain. He said, ‘You’re earning far too much money, you need to start investing’.” Russell and two partners now own a couple of hotels in Melbourne and he helps with his wife’s shooting range business. “It doesn’t last forever, but the only way you can make it last is to invest it into something. The other people who won gold medals might have bought boats or cars. I bought real estate.” Russell had a non-romantic approach to winning gold, knowing it was just one aspect of his life. “It wears off really quickly. It’s great for a couple of weeks, the parades and all, but I did want to go back to my old life.” Russell, 52, won one Olympic gold and one silver before he retired after the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The one downside in winning gold, he says, is losing anonymity. “You’d be hard-pressed to say there have been negative things associated with it – unless it’s being recognised at the local Pizza Hut.” Russell says he never felt “defined” by gold. “I say this to school groups all the time – Olympic Games are great but it’s only sport. I’d like to think it hasn’t changed my outlook on life.” ●

SHANE GOULD

taekwondo \ 2000 \ sydney

HEN Lauren Burns won gold in taekwondo at the Sydney Games in 2000, people told her it would change her life forever. “But I never really thought what that might mean,” she says. It didn’t take long to find out, and it was all good. The win supercharged her career speaking in schools and in the corporate world. Her bookings increased 100-fold. “I retired straight away, which meant I could speak anywhere, anytime,” says Lauren, 42. “I was running around the country. I reckon it took about five years until I slowed down and took a breath.” She wrote her autobiography (and a cookbook) and completed a health science degree. She also worked as a naturopath. She now juggles caring for two children, aged seven and five, with work on the speaking circuit. She says winning gold was all positive. “One of the most positive things that has ever happened to me; it opened up a whole new world. On a personal level it deepened my understanding of myself and the impact self-belief can have on your life. It also took me to places I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go.” Life after the Olympics is a topic close to her heart.

She completed a four-year term on the Australian Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission, where she was involved in developing an initiative that supports Olympians after retirement and through possible depression after a life in elite sport. Now she is undertaking a Masters at RMIT, looking at the impact of lifestyle on elite sporting performance. “Sometimes it doesn’t happen straight away,” she says of the impact of an athlete’s career ending. “There’s an awakening moment when you go, ‘I’m not Lauren Burns the taekwondo girl, I’m Lauren the mum, the student, whatever is in my life’. Taekwondo was such a huge part of my life for such a long time … sometimes your sport becomes very entrenched in your identity. Some athletes can feel defined by it. It can come a year after they retire or five or 10 years [later].” Lauren still enjoys the legacy of the medal. “I am still involved in talking about it, reflecting on it, being in contact with other Olympians. That’s still very much a part of my everyday life.” ●

GRACE UNDER FIRE MYKE BARTLETT TALKS TO ACTOR & ACTIVIST SUSAN SARANDON

A

ctor, activist, model, Academy Award winner, grandmother, sex symbol. Try encapsulating Susan Sarandon in a sentence and you’ll end up with something faintly incongruous. With a career spanning four decades, the 69-year-old continues to defy conventions. While many screen actresses struggle to find parts her side of 50, Susan’s CV remains as lively as ever, with appearances in no fewer than five films this year alone. On top of that, she has recently been appointed a L’Oreal ambassador and made a rather buxom appearance in a Marc Jacobs campaign. Try a Google search for “ageing gracefully”, chances are you’ll end up with her picture. Down the phone from her New York office, ahead of her visit to Melbourne next month, Susan confesses she doesn’t feel she has any advice on that front. “I don’t feel very graceful; I feel like I’m just stumbling around,” she says. “I think it’s very hard for women in this business, because you’re scrutinised so strongly and you’re on a screen that’s so huge. If you see yourself up there looking horrible and you’re trying to get work, I

understand the temptation to do something drastic.” We’re speaking in a week when the press have had knives out for Meg Ryan, with reports claiming she had been left “unrecognisable” following an alleged bout of plastic surgery. The stories highlighted Hollywood’s double standard towards older women – one that requires them to be forever beautiful but viciously derides their attempts to be so. “I’ve no problem with people nipping and tucking and doing whatever they want but when it changes your face, that terrifies me,” Susan says. “The reason I haven’t done a lot of this stuff is I’m terrified by what I’ve seen. It changes you to look like some manifestation of fear, an impersonation of yourself. You don’t want to erase all of your experience.” Susan credits her staying power with a willingness to embrace that experience and play unglamorous roles other women might have resisted. “I’ve always thought of myself as a character actor, so it hasn’t been a huge transition for me. But a lot of the women I started out with, and I’ve been on this trip

since I was 20, have fallen away, for sure. There’s an amazing amount of ageism and sexism in the business. If you look at a script, there are a lot of places where women could play roles that just by habit and laziness and lack of imagination are cast as men.” Closer to home, Tina Arena and Noni Hazlehurst have recently called out the male-dominated entertainment industry for shutting out older women. This inequity is likely to be one of many hot topics raised during Susan’s Melbourne appearances as part of the La Dolce Italia festival, which celebrates Italian

Davis as highway robbers, has become something of a feminist classic. That it was never intended as such says a lot about ongoing inequality on the big screen. “When we made it, we were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid except with trucks, you know? We didn’t realise how guarded that territory was by white, heterosexual men,’’ Susan says. “If you talk to Geena Davis, she’ll tell you not that much has changed. There haven’t been that many films like that. We thought there’d be so many because it was such a huge hit.”

“You don’t want to erase all of your experience” culture in Melbourne. In support of the Bully Zero Australia Foundation, Susan will grace an intimate lunch and evening session at the Regent Theatre, where she will engage the audience in frank and spontaneous discussion about films and pretty much anything else. “I usually prefer, no matter what the venue, to have a dialogue rather than speaking at people,” Susan says. “It gives me an opportunity to hear what people are thinking, what they’re curious about and what’s going on in worlds that I don’t travel in that often. That’s the nice thing about my job. I get to be exposed to so many different things and people and times that other people don’t get a chance to stumble into.” One film she will be talking about is the trailblazing Thelma and Louise, which this year celebrates its silver anniversary. The film, which stars Susan and Geena

Sticking with that theme, Susan’s next project will be another female double act. She’ll play Bette Davis to Jessica Lang’s Joan Crawford in Feud, an eight-part TV series about the rivalry between the two screen legends. While the show is looking backwards, Susan is keeping her gaze firmly on the present. “We’re asking the question, has the industry and its attitude to women changed that much? In the midst of it, you have these two women who could have taken on the world far more effectively had they teamed up rather then spending their time fighting each other.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » An Evening With Susan Sarandon Regent Theatre, August 7, $165-$975 » ladolceitalia.com.au

MEET

WATCH THIS FACE LEE ABRAHMSEN \ OPERA SINGER

What’s the buzz? After she was parachuted in at the 11th hour to sing the lead for Sydney’s Omega Ensemble, The Daily Telegraph described Lee’s performance as “radiant”. It’s a word often used in her critical notices. Classical bible Limelight Magazine has called her voice “deliciously full-bodied”. In the beginning … Dubbed a “shrinking violet” by her family, 10-year-old Lee used to hide away in her bedroom and listen to classical music. “Which was strange, obviously,” she says. Sent to singing lessons to improve her confidence. She ended up winning a place at University High and went on to study singing at the Melbourne Conservatorium.

The big break … Lee won the prestigious Herald Sun Aria in 2010, a prize previously won by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Lee says it was a last-ditch attempt to break into the world of opera, after giving birth to her first son. Winning “it’s not opened the doors to overseas study and a steady career with companies across really about the country. success Where to now? While future gigs are currently under wraps, Lee will this month be performing Wagner’s rarely staged Tannhauser for Melbourne Opera.

for me”

The best part about success? “It’s not really about success for me. The best feedback I get from an audience member or a professional is that they’ve been moved. I think, with singing, there’s so much you’re capable of because the voice is such an emotive instrument. That’s why I do it.” If I could do it all again … “The one thing I would do differently is be brave enough to put myself out there and call people. You need to be proactive.” ● MYKE BARTLETT mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

Lee Abrahmsen isn’t your typical opera singer. Hailing from Geelong, the soprano stumbled into the craft relatively late, after being inspired by an ABC TV broadcast as a teen. Painfully quiet, she was a far cry from the outrageous extrovert that opera singing usually brings to mind. Two decades later, she’s one of the country’s busiest performers, frequently gracing stages for Melbourne Opera while also making appearances at London’s St Martin-InThe-Fields and the Edinburgh Festival.

Taryn Brumfitt is on a mission to help women

I

f debut filmmaker Taryn Brumfitt has anything to worry about, it is being hugged too much, judging by the advance screenings of Embrace. “She was just mobbed,” the publicist for the crowd-funded documentary marvelled after witnessing the audience’s enthusiasm for the Australian body image activist, writer and filmmaker. Typically Taryn waved away any well-meaning attempts at rescue – after all her superpower is connecting with people. Even if the name of the founder of Body Image Movement isn’t instantly familiar, chances are you’re one of 100 million people who have seen her on social media. In the three years since Taryn posted the “before” shot of herself as a calorie-obsessed size-6 bodybuilder next to an “after” shot of herself as a happy, healthy size 12, her whole life has undergone an even more dramatic overhaul. Last year the high school dropout found herself addressing the leadership team at Google HQ in California. “It was hilarious. I am, like, everyone here, you need to stop carrying on like a bunch of pork chops. They quite didn’t get that, of course, but to think I can stand there and own that space and say that without alienating people,” says the 38-year-old with a laugh. It’s not as if her goal of promoting healthy self-image is unique, but Taryn – or Taz as her old friends call her – doesn’t just talk the talk, she literally embodies it.

“learning to love my body felt like winning the golden ticket” The story of her transition from photographer to international public speaker and body image activist, with such celebrity supporters as Ashton Kutcher, Perez Hilton, Rosie O’Donnell, Zooey Deschanel and US talk show host and original Hairspray star Ricki Lake (who wrote the foreword for Taryn’s first book Embrace: My Story from Body Loather to Body Lover), began in late 2012. Deeply unhappy with her body after bearing three children, she had booked to have cosmetic surgery to fit the yummy mummy ideal when she began to think about the kind of message this would send her daughter Mikaela. She decided instead to effect her own transformation through intense bodybuilding training, only to discover that having the “perfect bikini body” was not a passport to happiness. After strutting the stage in her first bodybuilding competition, she realised she was heading to another extreme of body dysmorphia; that she needed to find balance and embrace her body rather than viewing it as an ornament. Achieving the perfect body, she concluded, required “too much sacrifice, too much time, too much obsession. And it’s just not worth it.”

SKIN DEEP

love their bodies, writes SARAH HARRIS “Learning to love my body felt like winning the golden ticket, that is the best way I can describe it,” Taryn says. “We need to change the currency of beauty and empower women to know that they can end the war that they are having with their bodies. Beauty is nothing you can actually see. It’s kindness, humility, compassion and all of those things.” Taryn, who grew up in suburban Adelaide, may seem an unlikely activist but she has always been a doer. “If something is not right, I want to make it right. If you can help, you help.” The loss of her brother Jason to a heroin overdose when she was in her early 20s has been another strong driver in trying to help women exorcise society-imposed demons. “I want women to experience life for all it is and worry less about the things that don’t matter. But women are being anchored down by how they feel about themselves.” Despite her relentless energy, there were times when Taryn’s ambitions for Body Image Movement seemed impossible as she travelled around the country speaking at local clubs to try to get the message out. “We sold the family car to fund it in the early days,” she says. “I remember rocking up to a photo shoot on my bike one day, it was bucketing with rain and someone asked, ‘Why are you riding a bike in this weather?’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, I just love to ride’. Of course, it was my choice to do these things, but it had a very big impact on a young family.” But it is not just her own family who had faith. After an impressive group of women, including Turia Pitt and Mia Freedman, agreed to feature in her debut documentary, a further 8909 people pledged a total $331,046 to Taryn’s Kickstarter campaign to make Embrace happen. “For me it would be a great crime if people saw the documentary and went, ‘Oh my god, it was amazing, I loved it, but that’s it’,” Taryn says. “We are trying to create a global movement and I am very serious about that.” She is already shaping up for battle with the Australian Classification Board after it slapped Embrace with an MA15+ rating because, within its 90 minutes, it includes 12 seconds of footage that shows vaginas, including some with “protruding labia”. “Getting the film into high schools is something we really want to roll out in 2017 and this [the rating] is going to be problematic for us,” Taryn says. “There is nothing harmful about seeing the diversity of what 50 per cent of the population has. Really, this is exactly the kind of body-shaming we have to fight against. The hypocrisy drives me nuts.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au » Embrace opens in cinemas nationally on August 4. » Watch the trailer @ theweeklyreview.com.au » bodyimagemovement.com.au

Ask the wine guy follow the old restaurant rule Ionalways of ordering the second-cheapest wine the wine list. Am I getting value for money?

A

Value for money with any wine list depends on the restaurant. By selecting the next-to-cheapest wine you might not be getting the best wine to go with your meal. Lately I’ve been ordering my meal and then asking the sommelier for a wine option to match within a certain budget. This often results in a few different wines from the by-the-glass list. Restaurants and bars often get discounts for pouring certain wines by the glass and occasionally they share the love. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

Bernard Schurr Les Courtilles Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2014 (Cotes Du Rhone) $27; 14.5% This 50/50 blend of shiraz and grenache is organic. Meaty aromas and flavours of dried herbs, cherries, plums and earth have a slightly sour, savoury edge. It’s silky smooth, savoury and has a terrific wash of sandy tannins that flow through the mouth and provide length. It’s effortless, pure and so easy to drink. ● Enjoy with \ Minute steak and chips

Santolin Pinot Noir 2014 (Yarra Valley) $45; 13% I tasted this and, quite impressed, duly wrote a note about its perfumed cherry, plum and strawberry characters, sappy grip and concentrated, elegant flavours. Forgotten for five days, I had a taste before tipping it out, to see if there was any life left. It had barely budged and was even better drinking – indicating the wine will benefit from a few years in the cellar. ● Enjoy with \ Seven vegetable tagine

Yering Station Village Chardonnay 2015 (Yarra Valley) $24; 13% You can rely on Yering Station chardonnay for value and quality. Add excitement, too, for this is no straightfoward chardonnay, with barrel fermentation adding a little funk and complexity. White nectarine, spice and citrus flavours burst with intensity. There’s a light structural grip, racy grapefruitflavoured acid and good length. ● Enjoy with \ Chicken kiev

THE VERDICT

f there’s one thing I love doing more than eating, it’s eating with my hands. Something about rolling up the sleeves and forgoing the fork makes the experience feel primal and more satisfying. Few cuisines lend themselves as perfectly to this penchant as Ethiopian food; saucy curries and multi-coloured lentils, mopped up with traditional yeasted flatbread called injera. It’s the injera in particular at The Abyssinian that sets this Kensington fixture apart: piled up like a podium upon which everything dances, fluffy and fine yet spongy enough to absorb even the richest of gravies without disintegrating in your fingers. Speaking of gravies, your best bet is to let the kitchen choose your table’s adventure with a platter of this and that. Just make sure they include the chicken – bright with turmeric – and the fish, coated in a deep red chilli sauce that belies a surprisingly gentle heat and delightful depth of flavour. What’s also delightful is the chargrilled eggplant entree. I loved the dish so much, I’m still regretting ordering only one serve. This is cheerful dining you’ll want to share with friends, the kind you’d be happy to get messy on the injera podium with. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

READING \\ If you’ve ever been lucky enough to venture into the Alimentari shops in Fitzroy – “an Italian deli that grew”, according to the cover of Linda and Paul Jones’ new book of the same name – you can imagine the vibe. I love the bright, textural salads and that the recipes are organised into times of day when you feel like mangia-ing. ●

And when it is, you’re delighted because you’ve learnt something. “The most valuable thing science can give to a society is not a load of facts, but the central idea that you can always be shown to be wrong.” It’s hard to think of a better ambassador for science. His live show aims to inspire a bit of scientific fervour at Jeff’s Shed. “I think the excitement in science is when the things you discover almost seem incomprehensible. You just can’t get your head around what the data is telling you. “This whole show is that, really. Can you believe this stuff? While his day job is teaching particle physics at the University of Manchester, he’s gathered a staggering international following for books, podcasts and TV series that break down life, the universe and everything into bite-sized pieces. He’s coming to Melbourne with a new live stage show, exploring the secrets of the cosmos. And he promises he will do his very best not to blind us with science. “Science is really just looking carefully at nature and trying to understand it,” he says. “You look at a rainbow and think, ‘Why’s that?’ Every time scientists tried to understand a rainbow they made more progress in understanding light. TODDLERS’ ART CL ASS

The promise Habitots offers music and art classes for babies to 10-year-olds. Its philosophy is learning through play, by having new experiences, solving problems, gaining skills and, most importantly, having fun. Messy Play is an unstructured class that explores themes such as balls, Lego, space, pirates or construction, using painting, stamping, sticking, Play-Doh and sensory play. My little one is addicted to “drawing on paper”, so it’s time to take him to the next level.

The pay-off This is old-fashioned craft and serious fun. The kids are absorbed in creating and exploring, which results in some sweet keepsakes. Plus it’s social for the parents.

The reality The boy dons an art smock and our instructor tells us today’s theme is “Pasta Play”. There are play areas with different activities – we can make a dyed pasta collage, thread pasta necklaces, use Play-Doh and pasta and, the coolest, paint with a wet spaghetti brush! The boy is engaged immediately, dabbing red, yellow and green paint on the page. We meander through each area, painting with a spaghetti brush, finger-painting on a window, and stuff with glitter that makes me happy. We get to take the masterpieces home.

The bill It’s $20 for a 30-minute Messy Play session (for 1-to-2-year-olds).

The pain factor Things get pretty messy, obviously, so bring a change of clothes. Who should try it? Anyone with young kids.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

This is how childhood should be: innocent, simple, messy and awesome fun, so yes, we can’t wait for next time. ● 146 Bridport Street Albert Park 9686 1312 habitots.com.au

An inner-city oasis for those who want to live in beautiful spaces.

Who’s behind the counter? Talk about keeping it in the family – the Dahan family, that is. Twenty-five years ago Sean Dahan and his mother Wilhelmina started a nursery. Ten years ago the business took over a former train station (now a light rail stop) and Sean’s twin brothers Scott and Brett took over the business. It has since expanded into homewares, managed by Scott’s wife Christine. Scott, who used to train guide dogs, says he has always had an eye for gardening. “While I was training dogs, I used to walk around admiring gardens and looking at garden design – I always had it in me,” he says. He says the Garden is part of the community. “People have known us for so long. I think they trust the quality of service and our knowledge,” he says. What’s in store? Luscious native, cottage garden and edible plants, including fruit trees, herbs and vegies. There are also indoor plants and homewares, including furniture from HK Living, and products from Chilewich, Redecker, The Balcony Garden and The Dharma Door.

Our pick Western Australia’s Hammered Leatherworks makes gorgeous braided leather hangers that can be used for shelves or pots to show off favourite plants. Single hanger shelf kit $98; flat-back planter $124; with wall tab $32 (plants not included).

Who’s buying? Residents of all ages from the City of Port Phillip, from Elwood to Port Melbourne. ● CLAIRE SLATTERY

t’s no surprise that year 11 Mentone Grammar student Anna Mallows-Zejak would sync with a mentor like her dance and drama teacher Vanessa Moore. Both are obsessed by dance and musical theatre and work diligently on the annual productions staged by Mentone Grammar, Vanessa as choreographer and Anna as leading lady. Anna dreams of reaching Broadway and Vanessa is helping her improve her dance and theatrical techniques to help her realise those dreams. ● melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au

started dance when I was three. My sister was always dancing, which inspired me and I wanted to do it as well. At my sister’s dance school, I was knocking on the door wanting to be in there dancing. This is when my mum realised: “I better get her into some dance classes, to stop her banging on the studio door” (laughs). I started out doing classical ballet, which I did for 10 years to develop my technique. Recently I’ve been doing more hip-hop, jazz, acrobatics, other genres and extending myself as a dancer. When I was in year 9, Ms Moore started at Mentone Grammar and broadened dance in the school and it has been amazing. Not only do I have a new choreographer to teach me, Ms Moore has also assisted me with technique and to develop as a performer in VCE dance. I did The Wizard of Oz in year 7 and I played Dorothy, which was a great role. I performed in the school’s dance production of Cats as Bombalurina. Then in year 9, we presented the musical Grease and I played Sandy. Ms Moore was there for me, helping and inspiring and helped me extend my artistry in dance. This year we’re doing Legally Blonde and I’m playing Elle Woods, which is going to be amazing. It’s so good to have Ms Moore here. If I’m ever concerned or unsure about anything, I know I can rely on her 100 per cent. She always has the best advice to give me and always inspires and encourages me. Last year I won four national titles with dance, which I’m really proud of. I train for dance about 12 hours a week, which includes Sundays with a contemporary dance company and Saturdays at the Victorian College of the Arts, studying musical theatre. I am also doing classes during the week. It’s full on, but I love it. Ms Moore understands because she’s danced her whole life as well. After Mentone, my main goal is to perform on Broadway. I’ve had this dream for as long as I can remember. It would be a great goal also to get into WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) or do a bachelor of fine arts (musical theatre) at the Victorian College of the Arts. ●

his is my third year at Mentone Grammar. This year I’ve taken on a new role, I’m deputy head of Greenways, which is our year 9 campus, because I love working with kids. I’m working on growing dance at the school. Our new creativity centre is going to be fantastic; it will have a stage for our productions. I’ve always had a passion for dance. I started dancing when I was about 3½. I went through my school life always dancing. I did every musical the school offered. From there I auditioned for the University of Ballarat (Federation University Australia) to study theatre. I decided to do my masters’ of education at Deakin because I realised that my passion, as well as dance and drama, was being able to impart that knowledge to students and share in their success. I also wanted the opportunity to create my own works. Mentone Grammar allows me to do this with our dance evenings, Stagecraft classes and I create a range of dances for years 5-12 and we do productions. I’ve watched Anna grow in the past three years. At the start she was a very proficient dancer but she still needed to work on some technical things. Now having Anna in VCE, we’ve been working on her ability to emote to an audience and share a story, which is very difficult for a dancer. In VCE dance, we have to express a story and try to get that across. Now, after three years, we have these facial expressions where we know what each other means. Just being able to share in her success has been wonderful. Mentone Grammar competed this year at the Crown International Dance and DanceSport Championships for the first time and Anna came first in the lyrical dance section and second in jazz. Now we’re starting to look at what Anna’s going to do in the future and performing is really in that pathway. ● » Mentone Grammar’s new creativity centre, with a 450-seat theatre and visual/performing arts and technology learning spaces, opens in 2017. Legally Blonde is on at the Drum Theatre, corner Lonsdale and Walker streets, Dandenong, August 25-27. AUGUST 3, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 23

ne of the things that most impressed me O about Hyundai’s luxury car, the Genesis, was the balance achieved between ride and handling.

here are two Elantra models: the base Active, at T $24,694 in manual or $27,071 in auto, and the Elite, just shy of $30k. If you can manage it, go for the

Elite; the interior is noticeably nicer with richer, more tactile surfaces and an ambience that says quality. For all of that, the Active has everything you need. It surprised me that there is no navigation option. Hyundai instead asks you to plug in your iPhone and use its mapping, with the map and directions coming up on the in-built centre screen. This is fine only as long as you have phone range. Otherwise this is a terrific car. The seating is comfortable and supportive, and it’s easy to find the right driving position. But I didn’t like the forward posture of the head restraints, which can’t be tilted back. The dash layout is simple and clear and I liked the generous leg room up front. It’s still pretty good in the back too, but headroom will be an issue here with taller passengers. ●

But then a Genesis costs $65k. The surprise is that Hyundai has achieved that same balancing act with the far more price-friendly Elantra. It corners fast and flat without skipping, it’s predictable and solid. And it’s not just the ride/ handling equation, it has beautifully weighted steering and a nicely taut chassis. When you feel like taking it gently you’ll note the interior is quiet and the fuel economy is pretty good, despite a willing motor and a well-matched six-speed auto that changes down when it should, rather than when it will use the least amount of fuel. It’s brisk away from the lights and it overtakes swiftly. Among all the sedans between $20k and $30k, this provides about the best driving experience you’ll find, along with heaps of practicality. ●

This is where she nurtures herself. Pearls (aka The Madame) is a force of nature who balances running one of Melbourne’s most popular bars with maintaining a home sanctuary to come back to. Mine is mainly filled with Taittinger.

PEARLS I have pearls from all over the world. My nickname “Pearls” comes from a Cockney saying, “what a pearler”. It is also my birthstone. I have pearls from my grandmother, mother and from many ex-boyfriends and – don’t tell anyone – but I love rubies.

BEAUTIFUL ROOF GARDEN

f beauty is a promise of happiness, as articulated by philosopher Alain de Botton in The Architecture of Happiness, then the future occupants of South Yarra’s six-star Capitol Grand have decades of pleasure ahead. The $800-million project will undoubtedly feature some of Melbourne’s most stunning and emblematic architecture in its twin sculpted towers and elevated gardens. But the beauty in this case goes far further than skin deep – Capitol Grand’s architects have also captured the essential ingredients for a happier, less stressful life: views, abundant natural light, a garden sanctuary, convenience, connectivity and diversity. Capitol Grand is in one of Melbourne’s most prominent and privileged locations – at the crossroads of Toorak Road and Chapel Street, four kilometres from the CBD. At 180 metres, the taller LK Tower will be the highest building in South Yarra and the tallest landmark building outside the CBD. It will have spectacular vistas across Melbourne, taking in the Yarra River, Albert Park Lake, Port Phillip Bay, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the city and the Dandenong Ranges. Capitol Grand’s design, by internationally renowned architects Bates Smart, begins with a three-level luxury retail arcade where high-end global brands sit alongside international trendsetters and include a world-class restaurant. Two sculptural towers rising above house a sophisticated collection of residences. Set back from Toorak Road, two intertwining elliptical forms rise up and taper as LK Tower soars towards its breathtaking summit. Below, the balcony-wrapped 50-storey Capitol Grand Tower showcases sculpted curves. and Switzerland, where his work included projects at the Tate Modern art museum and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. He says Capitol Grand is a one-of-a-kind building and a precious opportunity for people looking for a more connected, convenient and less stressful lifestyle. “What is exciting about this project is the amount of diversity within one development. It will provide significant opportunity for people from different parts of the community to buy into it. Apartments start from $600,000, with access to amenities

including the 24-hour concierge service,” he says. “There’s a very beautiful roof garden surrounded by rich and resplendent amenity – pool, gym, dining and lounge areas – that spill out into the garden. The garden is the epicentre of Capitol Grand and many apartments will have garden outlooks and some will have direct access.” The LK Tower balconies expand as the building steps back to form terraces that are essentially gardens in the sky. On level 33, apartments of 140 and 137 square metres have 122-square-metre garden terraces. “The garden, with wide-ranging amenities and hospitality and retail below, will make living at Capitol Grand extremely convenient and relaxing,” Kristen says. “It takes care of all of your needs in one go.” He says there are a lot of slender-line shallow apartment layouts, allowing more natural light and outlooks than traditional layouts. These slender-line units have expansive terraces of up to 60 square metres, comparable to their internal living area. To further extend light and views and add flexibility, many apartments have retractable sliding doors between bedrooms and living areas. Bates Smart has given Capitol Grand multi-tiered social spaces, from the protected, private space of apartments to intimate spaces where residents can spend time with friends and family and larger-scale spaces where they can connect to the Capitol Grand community. “This diversity of social spaces meets our intrinsic needs as human beings – it will feel natural and promote a happier way of life,” Kristen says. “We have added hotel-style services and conveniences, so not only will residents feel connected but they can also feel cared-for and free from mundane chores.” ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au AUGUST 3, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 27

uggenheim Museum, New York; penguin pool, London Zoo; luxury townhouse, Brighton. What could possibly connect them? The white swirl of a spiral staircase, of course. Inspired by the renowned museum’s sweeping ramp and the new penguin water slide, architect Martin Friedrich created a dramatic staircase as the showstopper at this cul-de-sac house. “It’s a beautiful central focus of the house and integral to the design … like an artwork,” he says. The stairwell’s cylindrical shaft creates sculptural interest on all three levels. In the basement garage, it separates the four-car parking area from the home cinema, powder room and wine display cabinet; in the ground-level foyer its curved balustrade contrasts dramatically against dark oak floors; and above the first-floor landing, natural light spills down from a circular skylight. Seen from the street, its shape bulges from the side wall of the contemporary build and is echoed in the solid front fence’s curve. Friedrich and his young family lived at the property for a year, and the vendors downsized here two years ago from a sprawling Victorian-era local landmark. Agent John Clarkson says the townhouse suits a broad range of up-scaling and downsizing buyers – empty-nesters, professional couples and families – who don’t fancy apartment life yet don’t want the time-consuming obligations of a large property. “Lifestyles have changed and people are time-poor. They want low-maintenance, contemporary living; they want all the amenities but don’t want to spend their entire weekend working in the garden,” he says. “While this house is large, it’s a compact block and designed to within an inch of its life.” The open-plan living area is quintessential contemporary luxury: a smooth flow from kitchen to the dining table, to the sitting area, then out past huge sliding doors to the bluestone-paved courtyard, a Jack Merlo design. An enticing tiled pool hugs the north corner of the house, reflecting light inside through floor-to-ceiling double-glazing. The kitchen has Miele cooking appliances, integrated Liebherr fridges and freezers, bar, mirror splashback and walk-in pantry. The polished Pietra Grigio marble in the four-metre-long island bench/breakfast bar is repeated in bathroom and powder room vanities and a ledge that runs the length of the living area and incorporates a gas fire. Back towards the front of the house, there’s a lounge room (or spare bedroom) off the foyer with a glass sliding door to a secluded pocket garden. Walking back around the curve of the stairs, you pass the laundry (with built-in ironing board and TV) and a powder room to arrive at a private fitted study, also with the front garden aspect. Three bedrooms fill the top level, each with an en suite, built-in or walk-in wardrobe and small balcony. From the main bedroom, at the end of the skylit gallery-like hall, there are sunset views over rooftops through white architectural fins that deflect summer heat. The en suite’s lighting, mirrors and free-standing tub lend a little glamour. There’s also provision for a lift; Friedrich estimates it could cost $75,000. The staircase, however, would still be the star. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com

The central hallway has parquetry floors, a decorative arch and pendant lamps hanging from ceiling roses. The formal lounge and dining room are to the left, with double doors between them. Both have bookshelves and original fireplaces. There’s a leadlight window in the dining room. The two spacious bedrooms are across the hall. The main has built-in wardrobes and an en suite. The living room at the rear has a glorious lantern ceiling with automatic blinds high above its parquetry floor. Recalling the property’s given name, the kitchen cabinets are made from South African mahogany. The kitchen also has wall-mounted Bosch ovens, a five-burner stovetop and Miele dishwasher. It’s not quite the South African veldt, but the courtyard garden, with its ferns, ivy-clad walls and established trees, is nonetheless beautiful. There’s a one-car garage. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

It’s rare to come across a block this size in sunny Beaumaris. Less than 100 metres from the beach and Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, this house is on a lavish 2295 square metres. Built in the 1970s, the house is a time capsule of its era. Owned by one family since

new, it is on the crest of a hill with glorious ocean views. A long driveway weaves through a garden with towering trees and low box hedges to a double carport. The raised entry leads to communal spaces on one side and a bedroom wing on the other. High ceilings, generous proportions, gorgeous timberwork and excellent zoning are defining

32 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 3, 2016

BRIGHTON \ 32 MIDDLE CRESCENT Shane Warne might have passed his No. 23 shirt to Michael Clarke in 2004, but the number remains enshrined on the bottom of the swimming pool of this Victorian mansion, where the Warnes lived from 2007-9. The number is larger than life, but then so is everything else at this c1880 house, which Warne and then-wife Simone renovated and expanded over its 3014 square metres. The mansion, Melville, has four commanding water features – at the front, in a garden on the left, smack bang in the middle and at the rear, where there are also two cauldrons that shoot flames to welcome special guests who might come in via Melville Lane. The proportions are grand throughout Melville, from the magnificent triple roses in its cavernous tiled hallway, brilliant leadlight and black marble fireplaces to the ultra-modern extension. In the vast family zone by the pool, the Calacatta island bench can seat 10, the butler’s pantry is larger and better equipped than most kitchens, and there is a heated outdoor kitchen. On it goes … a games room with nine-seat cinema, a gym with fireplace, guest bedroom with en suite and walk-in wardrobe, kids’ retreat with dramatic skylights plus en suites for each bedroom. The main bedroom has a pool view, en suite and a wardrobe you could live in. All this grandeur is a short walk to the beach and minutes from top schools. ● HARBANT GILL

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon

Guaranteed quality. Renovations our specialty.

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO

Winner of the Australian Achievers Award.

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon, Dr Stubbs says.

1202860-PB43-15

A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.

“Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.

One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me.
