It’s hard to go wrong with a savoury rosé from the south of France, especially one as pretty as this. It comes in a beautiful rose-based bottle, sealed with a glass vino lock (you push up the capsule to open). e had a lot of fun putting together this week’s King Kong Kong-inspired cover. It involved metres of gaffer tape, some PVC pipes and wooden boxes, and the technical wizardry of photographer Jules Tahan and his team at UA Creative. It also required the enthusiastic co-operation of Australia’s fastest-rising comedy star, Ronny Chieng. Just a few years ago, Ronny was studying law at Melbourne Uni, living in student digs and working part-time at a grocery store. Now he’s living the dream in New York, rubbing shoulders with his comedy heroes and making a name for himself as a regular on America’s much-loved satirical talk show, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Trevor Noah So we were thrilled that on a whirlwind trip back to Melbourne, he made time to clamber aboard our makeshift Empire State Building for our shoot and to sit down with Peter Wilmoth to talk about his extraordinary journey and his new local TV project. Enjoy! ●

PETER WILMOTH meets rising comedy star ronny chieng

HOW I CONQUERED “i thought i was awesome, then I went out to the real world”

PICTURE \ JULES TAHAN & UA CREATIVE 6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 20, 2016

R

onny Chieng, still rocking a dinner suit from our photo shoot, is mildly startled at his success in comedy. “I didn’t think anyone would ever pay me money to hear me talk,” he says. “Even selling my first ticket – I can’t believe you bought a ticket. It’s crazy. Someone bought a ticket to watch me tell jokes! They worked to earn money and they’re not just spending the money, it’s their time – to come out. Time! Oh my God. You can’t waste people’s money and their time.” It’s a little impromptu routine from Melbourne’s latest international success story, for an audience of one: me. And it’s got all the now-familiar Ronny hallmarks: the poker face, the quick-fire, dry-as-dust ruminating. It’s a potent mix and, after seven years of performing in Melbourne, Ronny has taken it to the world, working in New York as a “correspondent” with US comedian Trevor Noah on the late-night talk and news satire program, The Daily Show Show. Ronny couldn’t have imagined getting this kind of break when he started doing stand-up, while studying for a law/commerce double degree as an international student at Melbourne University. He’s gone from student accommodation in Carlton to hanging with Louis CK and Chris Rock in the Big Apple. Sweet stuff. As Ronny says, “a crazy dream”. “It’s an honour to be on the show. I’ve been wanting to move to New York for a long time, especially for comedy and to do a job like I’m doing is a dream come true. So every day I’m trying to make the most of my time there.” He has taken a slice of Melbourne to the American showbiz heartland. “I started doing comedy in Melbourne,” he tells me when we meet during a whirlwind trip here during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival earlier this month. “This is where I cut my teeth and paid my dues. My comedy is very much influenced by Melbourne. I don’t want to get too comedy-nerdy but Melbourne comedy has a certain flavour to it. I can make the analogy with music, it has a certain style and rhythm to it. My comedy is very much influenced by that.”

try-outs. Finally in his fifth year he did. “I thought, ‘I’m graduating, if I don’t do it now I’m never going to do it’.” Being on stage felt good. He finished his law degree but couldn’t get a job. “It’s a competitive market … I had a student visa. It’s hard to get a job as an international student. And I wasn’t the best student, I didn’t have the best grades.” In 2012 he did a five-month internship at a small law firm in Carlton. “I didn’t know what being a lawyer meant. It seemed like a cool thing to do, may as well go do it.” But he still wasn’t sure the law was for him. “Who’s 19 years old and knows exactly what they want to do?” His big break came at the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival when he won the award for best newcomer. “I thought I was awesome and then I went out to the real world to do comedy and started discovering the grind, discovering rhythm, grinding it out in Melbourne.” Winning the Airport Best Newcomer award was a critical turning point. Ronny had been working part-time jobs, including at a grocery store, and money was tight. The corporate world looked more secure. “I was going to quit comedy at that point,” he says. “I was working at a law firm. I thought, ‘I’ll do this one show and get it out of my system’.” Why did he want to quit? “You come from the corporate background and you get really risk-averse. I was still keen on comedy but I was dirt poor forever. It was hard to make money out of it.” After his debut stand-up show – The Ron Way – went well, he thought he’d give it another go. “I thought, ‘OK, I’ll keep doing it while I can’.” It was a good move. He was busy in stand-up and came to national attention as one of the “uncles” in Adam Zwar’s ABC series The Agony of … riffing on a range of topics. For many it was the first time we’d seen this natural comic, the wryness of his observations matched by his matter-of-fact delivery. In 2013 he performed at the Eddy Izzard Gala at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, Canada, alongside Trevor Noah. The American liked what Ronny did. Three years later when

cool’. But the older you get you say, ‘Oh my God, there’s so much crap on TV, it’s hard to make good television’. It gets even more amazing.” Ronny has drawn on his own experience to make a pilot for a new TV show Ronny Chieng: International Student. “I’m very lucky that the ABC asked me to do it because people don’t get a lot of chances to make television,” he says. “I had pretty much complete creative control. We got to make the show that we wanted to make. It was a great learning experience. I’d never done anything like that.” Is it semi-autobiographical? “I guess so. But my goal is to just make a funny TV show. I don’t think my story is particularly interesting. There are international students everywhere. We just wanted to make a funny, silly TV show that isn’t terrible.” The show will provide an insight into the world of the international student. “We come here because we are looking for a better education than we could have got at home,” says Ronny. “We are looking to become better people. We’re looking to grow here. The downside is that sometimes we can form our own enclaves and get a bit insular and not be outgoing and social enough. But there are cultural factors, language barriers … You’re young people living away from home for the first time. It’s a very weird time in your life. It’s nice to be able to tell that story … call out the flaws when there are flaws and promote the positive.” Being an international student suited him. “When I first came to Melbourne, honestly, it was, ‘Thank God I’m away from my parents; I’m living on my own now and I can find myself’. “You’ve got to make your own way and figure things out and deal with being in a foreign country with different cultures and people and everyone does things differently here. And you’re also trying not to fail at university. It’s a story that hasn’t been told and should be told, only because there are so many international students here. And it’s the only story I can tell that someone else couldn’t tell.” Did the idea of life in that corporate environment freak

new york Ronny, 30, was born in Malaysia and raised in New Hampshire in the US (his parents studied there) as a young child, and then spent his teenage years in Singapore. At 18 he moved to Melbourne. “I couldn’t wait to come here,” he says. “The weather was great, I was in college and I loved that experience. It was exciting to be overseas and away from your parents for the first time.” His parents were keen for him to become a lawyer. He kept his comedy ambitions to himself. “I think [my mother] just wanted me to be an awesome person and she saw that law was the easiest way to do that. She’s never derided my decision-making. She was worried about my future but she never said, ‘You have to do this’. But she did say, you have to finish your degree, which I was going to do anyway. “I never told her I was doing comedy; I just kept doing it. I waited until I got enough success where it didn’t matter that I was doing it.” Four times at uni he applied for, but didn’t attend, comedy

ast September he moved to New York for the show. “It’s the comedy mecca. I get to do gigs every single night.” He auditioned to play the legendary Comedy Cellar and was “passed”, which means he can be booked for gigs there. “It’s probably the best comedy room in the world. It’s legendary. All the big comics play there, Chris Rock drops in sometimes to do stuff, Louis CK drops in, Seinfeld drops in. I’m very lucky to have met a lot of my comedy heroes. I’ve opened for Dave Chapelle, I opened for Bill Burr.” As a teen in Singapore he didn’t have many comic heroes. “The only one I knew was Seinfeld. I thought he was great. And the show gets even better the older you get, when you realise how hard it is to make it. As a kid it was, ‘Oh this is

him out? “This freaks me out more,” he says of a life in comedy. “The nine-to-five I can understand. The creative world is up for grabs. In the corporate world you know how to navigate. You can see how to get ahead in that … In the creative world [you can’t see that]. That can scare people. I’m over that feeling now.” Things are moving fast for Ronny. He and his partner Hannah, a lawyer, got engaged at the beginning of the year. It’s been an action-packed eight years. “I’m happy with my live shows, attendances have been great. I can do theatres in Australia. I got to make my own TV show for the ABC.” His parents, who found out their son was doing comedy a long way into the story, would be proud. “I never brag about myself to my parents,” he says. “First of all because they are very hard to impress so there’s no point trying to impress them. My philosophy is if what you are doing is actually impressive enough, they’ll be impressed.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

N

icole Car is coming home. Australia’s rising opera star, born and raised in Essendon, hasn’t been back to Melbourne for almost two years – but what a way to return: the soprano is playing the lead in a new production of Verdi’s opera Luisa Miller, then visiting her parents at Arthurs Miller Seat on the Mornington Peninsula. The tall, affable 30-year-old calls it a gypsy existence but she’s not complaining: after finishing the Sydney season of Luisa Miller Miller, she flew to Brussels, where her boyfriend the Canadian baritone Etienne Dupuis was performing, before zipping to Melbourne to sing at the Arts Centre. Along the way, she’s been promoting her debut album, The Kiss, her eclectic playlist of 19th century arias that prove she’s a romantic at heart. Nicole’s voice is variously described as “liquid” and “fluid”, but one thing for certain is it packs an emotional punch and conveys conviction. Hearing her voice combined with that of tenor Diego Torre as her suitor Rodolfo is a real endorphin kick for Luisa Miller audiences. No spoilers about this production’s magnificent stage set but, thankfully, each piece of furniture looks bolted down. Opera Australia artistic director Lyndon Terracini says Nicole has the potential to be Australia’s most important opera singer since the late Dame Joan Sutherland. Late last year, Nicole made her debut at the Royal Opera House at London’s Covent Garden, singing Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen and then Tatyana

STEVE DOW MEETS melbourne’S own OPERA SUPERSTAR, NICOLE CAR

in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Yet for all the attention, Nicole, who insists everyone in the ensemble and crew is important, betrays no diva airs or graces. “It’s obviously very flattering if people want to make those kinds of correlations,” she says when we meet at a Sydney cafe over brunch. “There is no one who will ever be a Joan Sutherland again. She is absolutely one of a kind. I don’t think there are any singers today capable of doing the breadth of repertoire that she did, and for as long as she did it.” Nicole is just getting started. Her father Jack was a manager for the State Electricity Commission and her mother Monica a manager of palliative care and hospital-inthe-home services. She has an older brother who works in information technology. Nicole has no idea where her singing genes came from – “I am an absolute anomaly in my family” – although her mother learnt piano growing up and the family brought a piano into the home when Nicole was three or four. “They really wanted to have a musical household, somewhere we could be encouraged,” she says, enthusiastically waving a hand across the table and knocking over her smoothie, which spills on her blue shirt. “That happens when I use my hands too much!” It transpires her parents’ playlist included the Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Pink Floyd. No classical or opera. Nicole would come to love and sing jazz, listening to Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone.

(MICHAEL AMENDOLIA)

“I was really shy. I hated singing in front of people, but I loved singing”

She began singing lessons at eight after piano lessons. “I was really shy. I hated singing in front of people, but I loved singing.” Her school, Strathmore Secondary, had an excellent music program: she played clarinet and sang in choirs. Was it hard to then go up front? “No,” she says with a laugh. “I always wanted to be up front!” Nicole performed in high school musicals, playing ambitious actor Serena in Fame, for instance. “I was never the bad girl; always the ingenue.” In year 12, she performed at the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, singing songs from the 1930s and 40s. “My voice started to develop this vibrato, and the singing director said: ‘Maybe you should consider classical music’.” At 17, Nicole watched the late Deborah Riedel perform Tosca at the Arts Centre. “It was the first time I’d ever heard classical,”

she says. “I knew then and there that was what I was supposed to be doing.” Three months later, she enrolled to study classical music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. She met Etienne Dupuis when they were cast together in Eugene Onegin at the Deutsche Opera in Berlin. “We have similar senses of humour and work ethics,” she says. “We struck up a really great friendship that turned into something more a few months later. It’s so nice to have someone who knows what the ups and downs and stresses are.” The couple meet in different cities but as yet don’t live together. “The ideal would be to have an apartment but, even if we did, we’d be there like a month a year, maybe.” They constructively critique each other’s performances, she says. “We want to do the best job we can. We’re perfectionists.” ● sdow@theweeklyreview.com.au » Luisa Miller, State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne, May 16 to 27 artscentremelbourne.com.au

FIVE THINGS NICOLE MISSES ABOUT MELBOURNE LANEWAYS \ “I love the arcades, walking through Flinders Lane and Degraves and Block Arcade.” HER PARENTS \ “They’re a Melbourne thing for me,” she says with a laugh, “although they came to see me perform Luisa at Sydney Opera House.” THEATRE \ “I love the State Theatre. It’s a beautiful space to perform in.” FRIENDS \ “A lot of them are having babies I’ve not met. I’ll use the time in Melbourne to pseudo-aunt-watch.” INNER-SUBURBAN STREETS \ Nicholson Street and Brunswick Street. “I miss the familiarity of it, I think, because I’m constantly getting to know new cities.” APRIL 20, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 9

We’re blessed in Australia with the quality of wine under $20, let alone $40, so you’re spoilt for choice. If your friends are wine wankers, here’s your chance to get one back at them – on a budget. There’s no point bringing a knife to a gunfight, so avoid common varieties such as shiraz, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. Your friends will always have a story about one of those to outdo your selection, so go for an alternative grape. ● GOT A QUESTION? EMAIL \

Bleasdale has a long history of producing high-quality malbec, a grape made famous in Argentina. My goodness, this smells nice and it tastes even better. Violets, plum and hints of clove lead to dense plum and blueberry flavours. It’s concentrated but light, with firm, fine tannins – perfect for a steak. Length is impressive. ●

s far as dishes that epitomise Melbourne’s culinary melting pot go, you can’t do much better than the dumpling. Steamed soupy Shanghainese, moreish matzah balls and plump pierogi abound. But it’s the boiled Shandong-style dumplings that have captured my heart. The parcels of joy from the mother-daughter team Meiyan Wang and Ying Hou at ShanDong MaMa are made fresh, filled with thoughtfully sourced ingredients and delivered to the table piping hot and pillowy soft. My hands-down favourite, surprisingly, is the vego version: bright green zucchini, cuddled up against squibs of tofu and black fungus; scrumptious boiled, even tastier fried (but then again, what isn’t?). The fried mackerel dumplings are up there too, laced with coriander, ginger and chives. Shandong-style frying is gyoza-like but the dough is loosely pinched to help the excess juices escape. It’s crispy and chewy. The “Melbourne” dumplings are, appropriately, a mishmash of flavours, seafood and chicken. Order the crimson Mapo Tofu if you don’t feel like doubling down on dumplings. Despite its out-of-the-way locale, this place bustles both at lunch and dinner. It’s a no-bookings situation, so come early and bring your mama. She’ll love it too. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

EATING ATING \\ Sprats. These tiny smoked fish in oil, served with boiled chat potatoes, were a Sunday morning pre-Russian School treat and I’m bringing them back. Sprats & Chats. EDDIE THE EAGLE FILM

SA RA H BL AS KO SARAH BLASKO With last year’s album Eternal GIG Return, Sarah Blasko stepped out from the shadows of pop music straight into the spotlight. Its 10 songs were her most direct compositions yet – bold, immediate, romantic and clothed in bright 1980s synth-pop. On release, it crashed the Top 10 and won praise from critics across the nation. Quite right, too. Live, she can sometimes be a demure (if captivating) presence, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this new boldness translates onstage. ■ Forum Theatre, April 23, $69.57 sarahblasko.com ONLINE \ Watch I Wanna Be Your Man video

EDDIE THE EAGLE Eddie “the Eagle” Edwards is a British icon – an underdog whose achievements were great, if inglorious. Determined from a young age to be an Olympian, Eddie (Taron Egerton) doesn’t let being dropped by the national ski team dissuade him. In a matter of months, he retrains as a ski jumper with help from disgraced athlete Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), hoping to qualify for the 1988 Winter Olympics. His unlikely, if true, tale makes for a delightful, warm-hearted comedy drama. ■ Opens April 21, rated PG, 106 minutes ONLINE \ Watch Myke’s interview with Hugh Jackman about his role as Eddie’s coach PEDDLING Harry Potter’s Dudley Dursley (aka Harry Melling) has come of age, emerging from the shadow of his wizarding cousin to build a reputation as an up-and-coming playwright. A group of Melbourne friends are shaken by the sudden death of their linchpin, each of them untangling their grief in different ways. Katy has boyfriend Nick to steady her, but friend Adam plunges into messiness. Taking its title from that colourful piece of (somewhat mystifying) Yarra-side art, Jennifer Down’s debut novel creates a vivid portrait of our city and its inhabitants. Story comes second to a cast of twenty-something characters who feel as true and familiar as the streets they walk. ● WATCH

I love Black Rock

For the perfect gift? Black Rock Chocolates is lovely; my wife Mary is very keen on chocolate. For a big night out? La Cucina, Beaumaris, has good wood-oven pizza, calamari and pasta. It’s a nice family atmosphere – it’s noisy and I like that.

For a sneaky takeaway? Every now and then when the grandchildren are over they love Half Moon Pizza – the ingredients are good; it’s very nice pizza. For some me time? I get very little, but I like to go fishing with friends. We have a little 18-foot boat and we’re members of the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron. I love being out on the water and catching fish, even if I’m not very successful. For some serious pampering? I get my hair cut at Mark Barker’s salon. I used to play tennis with the owner John. He’s retired now but his daughter Lisa is a magnificent person and I don’t have to tell her how to cut my hair. For a serious workout? I play tennis every Tuesday at the Beaumaris Community Centre. We have a group of a couple of dozen men who play socially. I started playing when I was in the army. I’m pretty good for a 69 year old man! ● CLAIRE SLATTERY

THE RHYTHM TREE

(SUPPLIED)

The promise The Rhythm Tree is an award-winning music and movement class for babies, toddlers and preschoolers – and the adults in their lives. It’s based on the premise that music is a basic life skill and all children are musical and can learn to keep a beat, hold a tune and be part of music-making. My little one may be the world’s youngest Belieber, and I’m keen to encourage his musical growth. The reality The little guy and I sit on the floor in a circle with other parents and kids. Our teacher, Juliane, starts with a greeting song and we’re encouraged to join in, welcoming each person by name to the class. We then move through a range of songs, each accompanied by different movements, activities, repetitions and contributions from us. My boy looks slightly baffled but as the class moves through melodies and lyrics, he warms to it and before we know it we’re all dancing, shaking miniature instruments and singing. Juliane could walk straight into a job on Play School. She makes jumping around saying “gooly gooly” and waving her arms

look almost dignified. She tells us the classes encourage families to make music a part of their daily lives. The pay-off The class is a wonderful way to show parents how to bring music into our lives and to bond with our kids through music. The pain factor You may have to leave your self-consciousness at the door. Who should do it? Anyone with kids up to five years old. The bill It’s $235 for a nine-week term, including a song book and CD.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

I’m looking at enrolling for the term now. ● The Rhythm Tree Port Melbourne, Brunswick East, Abbotsford Convent and Doncaster Phone: 9878 9341 therhythmtree.com.au Valuing learning, family and fullness of life.

Who’s behind the counter? COS has been open for more than 30 years and Tessa and Rod Weaver are only its third owners. The pair took over in 2011 but started shopping there when it first opened in the early 1980s. The Weavers have been vegetarian for almost that whole time and try to live and promote a chemical-free existence, for both ethical and health reasons. “We find there’s two things people turn to when they’ve been sick – the first is organic and the second is God,” Rod says. The Weavers have made several improvements to the shop since taking over, including installing a cafe and juice bar. What’s in store? Everything is organic, including certified fruit and vegetables, flours and grains, nuts, chips and other snacks, alcohol, chemical-free cleaning products and make-up, cookware, tea towels and chocolate. Two fully qualified naturopaths work on the shop floor offering free advice and consultations. Who’s buying? This is a destination for organic shoppers both locally and from right down the Peninsula, aged from their teens to 80-plus-years-old. ● CLAIRE SLATTERY

ME & MY MENTOR

Melbourne Girls’ Grammar 86 Anderson Street, South Yarra 9862 9200 mggs.vic.edu.au

ROSE PHAN & LAMIA ROCKWELL

special promotion

A

s the director of senior years at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar, Lamia Rockwell encourages girls such as year 12 boarding student Rose Phan to grow into women of integrity and to have courage, compassion and self-discipline. These are values students will take with them throughout their education and their later life. Through her mentoring, Lamia has discovered she has a lot in common with Rose. Both were educated overseas before coming to Australian schools. Both first spoke languages other than English, and both have a great love of mathematics. ● MELISSAHEAGNEY melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au

ROSE SAYS … I also love mathematics, like Ms Rockwell. Outside of school, I like playing the piano. However, I have shifted my interest to playing drums because it provides me with a more unique opportunity to meditate. It’s one of the hobbies that I really enjoy and I’m willing to wake up early on Thursday mornings to attend lessons. It always cheers me up. My goal is to become a biomedical engineer. I really want to learn more about the bionic ear and bionic eye and artificial organs – that’s what I’d like to specialise in. My family really supports my decision to pursue this pathway and they have sacrificed a lot for me to be where I am right now. Even though my parents and I don’t talk much, we understand that we are always on the lookout for each other. I believe Ms Rockwell and I reflect the diversity of Melbourne Girls’ Grammar. It’s really nice to have someone who shares a similar experience; someone who understands me, who also encourages my individuality. ●

“i particularly like physics because it offers a more complex & different perspective into everyday life”

LAMIA SAYS …

I

began my tertiary studies in dentistry. However, in my family I was surrounded by teachers. My mother and her three sisters are teachers and, while I wanted to move away from becoming a teacher, my compassion for others led me to the realisation that teaching enabled me to enjoy learning and helping others to learn. With a love for mathematics, I changed my degree to a bachelor of education majoring in mathematics. In my role as director of senior years at MGGS, I support the girls individually at

every opportunity. My interactions with the girls range from guiding them through the subject selection process to addressing and supporting them on matters of well-being. Mentoring at MGGS is an important way to guarantee students receive support in their education and are able to excel in their fields of interest. My role helps to ensure students enjoy a holistic education and gain a balanced view of the place that study holds in an authentically happy life. For Rose, that’s in science and mathematics and flourishing as a leader in her role as the community, service and action vice-captain.

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

I

came to Australia about two years ago, in year 10, from Vietnam. I’m boarding here. It has been a really interesting experience. At home my parents never allowed me to have sleepovers and here I’m living with 89 girls and we have a massive dinner together every night and it reminds me so much of Harry Potter. In the boarding house, you’re also never alone. You can be in your room but there’s always someone around who shares the same feelings of homesickness so you can always talk when you are feeling lonely. One of the advantages of living in the boarding house is that you get to know lots of girls from all different year levels and backgrounds. We also have a tutor to help with homework and we have a nice structure when you can ask for extra help. I really enjoy chemistry and physics. I particularly like physics because it offers a more complex and different perspective into everyday life applications that we usually take for granted.

Rose comes from a similar background to me, in that I came to Australia from Lebanon at the age of 16. My first languages are Arabic and French. I attended a French private school in Lebanon. Rose was also 16 when she came to Australia. We met when she came into my office to talk about [school] subjects and, as our conversation progressed, we began to discuss how best to manage her transition to MGGS. I referred to, and reflected, on my own experiences and we discovered many aspects that linked us together. We both play piano and we both love mathematics and I think it helped Rose

relax a little more, feel a little bit better that there was someone who really understands her, who has been through similar experiences. The interesting thing in the Lebanese culture – and this is another common aspect of Rose’s and my relationship – is that women do not always have an equal voice. For me to be where I am today has taken courage and determination, and I see those qualities in Rose’s approach to learning and leading at MGGS. I try to always model the belief that women can be leaders, that they can have an influence in society. ● APRIL 20, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 21

SCHOOL’S OUT WITH MARK SMITH

About Mark As co-ordinator of gifted and talented students at Mentone Grammar, Mark Smith works with brilliant young minds, mentoring them to achieve their best. special promotion

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A TEACHER? During year 10, I did work experience as a teacher at Meeniyan Primary School, where I had been a student. I had such a wonderful time working with the teachers I thought primary teaching would be a good career. When I became more specialised and moved into program development and curriculum writing within gifted and talented education, it was the theorists in the field such as Joseph Renzulli and Francoys Gagne, along with my like-minded colleagues, who provided my teaching inspiration.

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST TEACHING MEMORY SO FAR? By far my greatest thrill is the success of my students, those who are gifted and talented and, at times, those with learning difficulties. I have seen perfect ATAR scores and extraordinary wins in big academic competitions. For those with learning difficulties, a VCE pass can be just as satisfying as a 99-plus ATAR score for my gifted students. It’s about enabling every student to reach their full potential at school, while becoming well prepared for a successful life outside school. To achieve this, you need to make every lesson, every day count. This is teaching and learning success in my view.

“i learn so much from my students … their skills & ingenuity never cease to amaze me”

WHAT DOES TEACHING GIFTED & TALENTED STUDENTS INVOLVE?

WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION AT SCHOOL & WHY? My primary school teachers were so caring. I always wanted to please them because of the way they looked after us. Living in Meeniyan, such a small community, you would see them at the local football on the weekend, or in the milk bar. Some of them also attended my church so they were so much more than teachers to me. I also had some excellent secondary teachers and one or two amazing peer collaborators who really helped me in some subjects. My parents were also very supportive and interested in my educational journey.

WHAT DO THE STUDENTS TEACH YOU? I learn so much from the students every day. Their skills and ingenuity never cease 22 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 20, 2016

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

It first involves getting to know the students and their special needs and unique abilities. As their teacher you are always aiming for them to be connected and challenged at school. It’s not all just about academics, you are working a lot on student organisation and social and emotional focuses, as well as personal resilience. A number of staff with various skills are also involved. This way we can use our staff strengths to broaden the abilities of our most able students.

to amaze me. I mentor about 60 students one-on-one each week – a number through year 12. Mentoring involves seeing these students every week for progress-checking, goal-setting and general support as needed. I raise lots of questions, discuss ideas and provide advice around how students can be the best they can be. What results from some of these discussions can be extraordinary: from the creation of phone apps, to new approaches to study, to ideas and suggestions for teaching and learning that I have implemented into my teaching practice.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT SCHOOL, where will you be & WHAT WILL WE FIND YOU DOING? I spend time with my wife Kristen, my son Jordan (18) and my daughter Charlotte (15) at our Warrandyte property. We have a small acreage and we usually run chickens and sheep. The rural life is something I value after my years at Meeniyan. ● melissa.heagney@theweeklyreview.com.au

The Buxton Group has been redeveloping and refurbishing the Crescent Brighton since it reacquired the management rights in 2012. That includes the courtyard gardens, which were redesigned and replanted last year. “We built it 16 years ago and we know people these days are looking for more contemporary than classical design and they want top-quality finishes and fittings. We’re updating the building to make it even more aspirational for modern retirees. People want a great lifestyle in retirement and we are keeping it at the forefront for luxury, space and independence. “We have worked with interior designer Margie Bromilow to revamp our communal areas and at our residents’ request we have expanded and upgraded the gymnasium and added an art studio, business centre and guest suite for visiting friends and family.” The Crescent Brighton is also staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with in-room emergency call buttons for peace of mind. ● LIZ McLACHLAN lmclachlan@theweeklyreview.com.au

or Brighton locals, Rylands of Brighton quickly became the gold standard in luxury independent living after it was founded in 2002 by the Buxton family. Set in courtyard gardens with 71 elegantly appointed freehold one- and two-bedroom apartments over three levels, the community has its own bistro and dining room, secure basement parking, well-equipped gymnasium, art studio, library, business centre, private dining room, wellness centre and several lounges with a bar and billiards. From April it will be known as the Crescent Brighton, taking the new name from its dress-circle location in Outer Crescent, opposite Brighton Grammar. Residents of the high-end retirement community selected the name as part of a comprehensive program of refurbishment by the Buxton Group, which continues to manage the property. Buxton Group managing director Richard Buxton says while the name is changing, his family’s vision and commitment remain. “We originally designed and built the Crescent to spoil my parents with a wonderful place to live. THE RIGHT ANGLE G

eometrics are all the rage but they can be a challenge to work with. Interior designer Greg Natale’s own apartment is a deft interplay of intricate lines and sharp-edged patterns beautifully balanced by organic shapes, rich textures and fluid colours. The effect is striking and dramatic. ● mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au Greg Natale gives us his top five tips for working with angles:

1 \ HIGHLIGHT

Try embracing the angles in a space rather than fighting them. The layout of my apartment is full of angles, which I’ve echoed in my choice of furnishings, feature chairs and accessories. The detailed lines emphasise those of the surrounding space.

2 \ BALANCE

Balance is key to achieving a cohesive and welcoming look. I introduced organic

ONLINE \ GREG EXPANDS ON HIS TIPS

curves and shapes in various pieces. The bold, generous splashes of paint in an artwork and the bright pink curve of an armchair all serve to juxtapose the geometrics in the space.

3 \ OFFSET

Of course angles aren’t always your friend. In another house I worked on, the angled roof cut into its high ceilings, presenting a challenge in terms of design flow. I needed to establish some consistent focus between the rooms, so I installed a horizontal band of wallpaper throughout. The wallpaper links the rooms stylistically while visually bringing the ceilings a little closer.

4 \ MAXIMISE

Make those angles work for you. In a limited space, this is particularly useful. I used a slanted line to divide the two surfaces of mirror and granite wall in the small kitchen of my apartment, to create a sense of escalating space and extra height.

5 \ ENJOY

Have fun with angles and geometrics; experiment where they could work in a space. Patterned accessories, cushions and throws are all quick, easy ways to inject a bit of drama into any room. ●

lack Rock always was all about its real estate. The suburb’s name even originates from its first private residence, an extravagant 50-hectare estate called Black Rock House, built c1856 as a holiday retreat for an early settler who made his fortune in Melbourne’s fledgling property market. “I fear I … [have] become disgustingly rich,” Charles Ebden apparently said, having transitioned from merchant to farmer to property guru, before becoming a parliamentarian and Victoria’s first auditor-general. Though its land holding was carved up and it lost its beach frontage, heritage-listed Black Rock House and its Moreton Bay fig trees still stand in the street named after Ebden, and a group of proud local burghers hosts costumed guided tours and ghost tours. Now, 160 years later, Ebden Avenue and its neighbourhood are populated primarily by families who live here for the same Half Moon Bay attractions of swimming, boating and fishing, plus its latte lifestyle, the cycling/walking Bay Trail, well-regarded schools and a thriving village of shops and eateries. As for the kind of properties in demand, with 50-hectare estates being thin on the ground and expensive to maintain, you can’t go past this four-bedroom house less than five minutes’ stroll from the village and beach. A year ago, this 788-square-metre site sold with only a drab mid-century brick-veneer house on it. Instead of slapping up townhouses, the owner-builder poured labour and love into a top-to-toe overhaul with a 144-square-metre extension, landscaping, the addition of a pool and on-trend styling and inclusions. The front half comprises quietly sophisticated accommodation of an en-suited main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe – fitted to the detail of a tie rack and sensor LED strip lighting at floor level – plus two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, a TV room or spare bedroom and a family bathroom with freestanding tub. A study nook with desk and storage is to one side of the wide hall. Modern horizontal windows give an outlook to the front lawn and pair of weeping cherry trees. The exposed aggregate driveway fits two cars behind the carport’s roller door and two in front of it. The bedrooms have cocoa-coloured wool carpet, the bathrooms have large Italian porcelain tiles and the hallway and the rest of the house features practical French oak flooring in a lime-washed, latte-grey blend. The full impact of the timber work is seen in the oversized, open-plan family room extension. This space incorporates a vast sitting area, meals area and marble kitchen that offers a 144-bottle dual-temperature wine fridge and a fitted butler’s pantry the size of a small library. To entertain on a grand scale, one simply pulls back multifold glass doors across the width of the rear of the house to access the elevated merbau deck. Half is under cover – with outdoor barbecue kitchen, strip heating and fan – and half is under a pergola, with broad steps down to the lawn and fibreglass-shell pool edged with bluestone pavers. There’s a fire pit on a gravel patch at the end of the block, or to ramp the party up inside, you can fill the room with friends and switch on the recessed disco strip lighting. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com.au

A partial wall with a mirrored face to the dining area and a marble face to the sitting area creates a stylish divider. The kitchen impresses with thick stone surfaces, a butler’s pantry and Smeg appliances, including a coffee machine. There’s an entertainers’ deck by the pool, and the garage doubles as extra party space. The massive main suite has his and hers walk-in wardrobes and an en suite. ST KILDA \ 48 ALMAA ROA ROAD On the north side of the street, this c1884 Hawthorn-brick terrace house is laden with period charm. Behind an L-shaped chequered-tile and lacework verandah, a wide entry hall introduces the house’s grandeur and sublime proportions. To the right is a library, an elegant room with a marble fireplace and tall windows. Further down the hallway are the formal living room and dining room. All three of these rooms have high ceilings and decorative cornices, architraves and ceiling roses. The open-plan living zone at the rear illustrates the skills of architect Peter Elliott. Capitalising on a northerly orientation, it has plenty of details to give it flexibility and style. The kitchen has granite benchtops, a walk-in pantry and rich timber joinery. A big bay window and multiple skylights mean there’s plenty of light. A highlight of the generous living space is the curved sofa in a cosy bay-window nook at the rear. Glass doors open to the garden, which comprises a grape-entwined patio, neat hedges and brick paving. The four well-proportioned bedrooms are upstairs. The main, at the front, has an en suite and lots of storage. Its greatest asset, however, is the balcony that wraps around the south-west corner of the house. A carport at the rear of the property offers a further sought-after, inner-city drawcard, parking for two vehicles. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

Victorian beauty beckons behind palm trees at this landmark house. Built in 1891, Beaupre is a freestanding, balconied residence that’s rich in ornate period detail. An architect-designed extension – awash with light and opening to the backyard – makes it also magnificent for modern living. Beaupre’s history includes time as a ladies’

college in the early 1900s and ownership by Bruce Woodley of The Seekers in the 1970s. The front of the house reveals sprawling lounge and dining rooms linked by twin archways. Fireplaces under marble mantelpieces and high ceilings with grand roses cement their timeless feel. Next up, the open-plan hub swaps carpet for honey-coloured floorboards, with the kitchen blending

creamy-limestone surfaces and quality appliances. There is another fireplace in the family area. Tucked to the right of this hub is a vast rumpus or fourth bedroom with its own entry. The huge main suite enjoys seclusion at the front of the second storey. Hundreds of white tiles gleam in its massive en suite with shower, corner bath, bespoke vanity and divine

leadlight panels. A door in the bedroom leads to the panoramic balcony. While the backyard might have originally been a high-maintenance garden, it’s now geared for the effortless entertaining of family and friends. Most of it is paved, the tropical landscaping is easy-care and the pool is sure to be a friend magnet. ● KAY KEIGHERY
