olunteers undergo regular training in areas such as towing techniques, search procedures and first aid with more than 120 hours of both classroom and on-water training required for a member to achieve fully operational status.

With approximately 20 local volunteers, Coastguard is an active member of the search and rescue community in our area.

Coastguard has assisted in both major and not so major incidents on our lakes in recent years and with over 2000 boats on

the water on Lake Wanaka on some days last summer, we also have an education role. Coastguard is a charity whose purpose is saving lives at sea (or in our situation, lakes). We rely on support from community organisations and trusts, and at a local level are very grateful to the Wanaka Rotary Club and the Graham and Olive West Trust for their financial support in 2012. The unit is now raising funds to purchase a dedicated Coastguard boat so look out for members selling tickets in the annual Coastguard raffle this summer.

As we feared, last week was party time for the local spiders. Ruby The Red back and Terry The Tarantula say they were just celebrating the end of the ski season with a ‘few’ friends. Having a party is great, say local authorities, but a party of 150 spiders who don’t care about their neighbours and leave a massive mess for the community to clean up is simply not acceptable.
