Scars Are For Fighters 12 babies are born with heart defects every week in NZ. Our son Louis was born with two holes in his heart requiring open heart surgery.

With an underlying heart condition, a simple cold can turn ugly. Staying up all night with Louis as he struggled to breathe was common. On one terrifying occasion we were choppered to Dunedin hospital with complications.

As a parent can you imagine what a scary place it was wondering if Louis’ heart would carry on, or would it stop or malfunction in some way? Thankfully we had the support of Central Otago@Heart team. Louis happy and This charity supported us with getting on with his life information, valuable connections with local families going through the same thing, and knowledge of the hospital system. They were there for us throughout the process. As a charity, they rely solely on donations!

Tree pruning Wanaka residents are being asked to call the Council rather than take pruning into their own hands. It is illegal to prune a Council tree. Pruning can sometimes damage to a tree if not done correctly and in the case of larger trees can be hazardous for the person doing the pruning so it’s important not to attempt doing it yourself. Keep Left Local drivers are being asked not to cut corners when it comes to safe driving. A new safety campaign has been launched seeking to remind drivers about the need to keep left at all times unless passing. Large electronic signs are going to be stationed on some of our state highways and police will keeping an eye out for people ending up on the wrong side of the road while cornering or weaving over the centre line. The campaign is being run jointly by the Council, the Police and the NZTA and this week will be focusing on the Kawarau Gorge.Thanks to Fulton Hogan and Wilson Contracting for their help in placing the signage.

I was on a school camp with 28 local 12 year olds last week and if these people are our future I have to say we are generally looking pretty good. An anvil weighing 75kg was stolen from an address in the Cardrona Valley on the 12th of July. A cubic metre of firewood was stolen from a Beech Street address. A back country skier who broke a leg while skiing off Gotlibs Peak was rescued by Wanaka SAR members. A text message claiming you have won $400,000 in the UK has been reported as a scam.
