PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Editor Theresa Campbell, CPP

Well, here we are in May 2019. I’m so excited about our guild and the many programs and workshops that we provide for your education. Since the last issue we’ve had the Bennett’s present their landscape program in March and I’ve had many comments about how good it was. I couldn’t agree more. Attendees of the day session earned a PPA Merit. Then in April, Mark Sykes presented his program on retouching using frequency separation. His use of the gradient tool was something I had never heard of. And, we have alot coming up:

Please come and join us on the third Tuesday of the month for our Monthly Guild meeting. If you have any comments, areas for improvement, please email me (dbblocker@comcast.net) we’re here to serve you. We want to know what you are looking for from our Guild. ~Duane Blocker, CPP, President, PPGH

EVENTS

TPPA has three competitions which include the Photographic Open Competition, the Artist Competition and the Wedding Competition. Entrants may now enter a maximum of eight entries in each of the Photographic Open, Artist or Wedding competitions. The Photographic Open Competition serves those who compete with digital images created by traditional photographic processes as well as those captured electronically with a digital camera or scanner. The Master Artist Competition serves those who compete with their skills in the PPA Master Artist Category using digital files. The Wedding Competition allows photographers to enter digital files or digital albums to be judged against a standard of excellence using the 12 Elements of a Merit Image. Images and all elements of an image in the Wedding Competition must be created during the time constraints of the actual event. The 2019 edition of the Annual TPPA Photographic Competition has undergone some changes in the rules and awards. Here are the important highlights: New for 2019: The Annual TPPA Photographic Competition will not be judging physical prints for 2019. Only digital entries will be accepted for this year’s judging. New Wedding Competition: TPPA proudly follows the lead of PPA by offering a new Wedding Competition for images and albums that were created within the time constraints of an actual wedding. New for 2019: A new Creative Open category under the Photographic Open Competition was created to allow images that have additional elements not created by the maker. Please note: all elements NOT created by the maker must be shown as a guide image.

Warm summer days on the Guadalupe River turn into comfortable summer nights by the pool. There is something special about Kerrville and we can’t wait to return! Inn of the Hills in Kerrville The Inn of the Hills has a rich past with Texas PPA and was once the home of our summer event, long before Conroe and before the YO Ranch Resort. It is located near the banks of the scenic Guadalupe River and is convenient to downtown and plenty of restaurants and other outstanding destinations. The hotel features lush landscaping in the courtyard and three swimming pools as well as casual dining and the Inn Pub. Summerfest is for You and Your Family As you look at our programing for Summerfest 2019, no doubt you will understand why we are presenting some of the most relevant information you need for growing your business. At the same time, there is no other photographic event that combines inspiration and education to photographers while creating a retreat atmosphere for families. All evening activities are designed to be able to spend time with family and friends.

Poolside relaxation, an old fashioned fish fry and the Awards Presentation are all open to families. Even the kids get in on the awards as they earn their ribbons from the Kids Photo Kontest. We even have supervised activities for the kids while you are in programs at the TPPA Kid’s Kasa. What to See and What to Do Kerrville is the gateway to all things Hill Country. Visit historic Fredericksburg for shopping and dining. Hike to the top of Enchanted Rock. Visit the James Avery foundry and showroom. Float the Guadalupe or head to the famous “Dam Slide” swimming hole. By all means, don’t miss dining at Mamacita’s in Kerrville. Take a stroll through Gibson’s for a step back in time to an old fashioned “dime” store and hardware store. Visit Stonehenge II or take in the Museum of Western Art. And be sure to check out the YO Ranch – home to North America’s largest collection of over 50 different species of exotic wild animals. The YO features horseback riding and photo safaris. Or, just sit by the pool and watch the clouds go by. A trip to the Hill Country is whatever you want it to be.

VALUE: WHAT ARE YOU TRULY WORTH?

PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES

MICHAEL MARTINEZ WORKSHOP RECAP by Tara Flannery, CPP

As photographers, pricing and valuing our work is one of the most difficult things we do. Seasoned veterans and new photographers alike struggle with finding that perfect balance of charging enough to be compensated for time and talent and finding the right clients who value the services we provide. During this fantastic workshop, Michael shared his 25 years of experience as a photography studio including his struggles and successes along the way. Michael knows the value that he provides and communicates that to clients who also value his services and pay a premium price for them. The studio is beautifully adorned with painter portraits that fill the front room as you walk through the front door. Everything is purposeful and planned. Michael specializes in family por-traits. The ultimate display for a family portrait is a large, framed painter portrait. And that is exactly what greets clients as soon as they walk into the studio. Michael uses In Person Sales (IPS) with a projection system to show actual sizes of printed products on the walls. Clients can easily see that the right size for a family portrait is a 30-inch print. No 8x10 prints will do for family portraits. If the client prefers a traditional framed print, he shows frames through ProSelect and he can even show samples of frames as well. Canvas gallery wrap samples also hang on the wall for clients to see. Each client session is custom and tailored to the client but structured to provide what Michael wants to sell – a large wall art piece for the home. From the photography to the sales appointment, everything is geared toward the final sale of that wall art. In order to determine pricing, Michael suggests not only looking at cost of goods (COGS) but also the cost of doing business (CODB). These business costs like insurance, legal fees, education, etc. must

be considered as part of your overall pricing model. Also consider that sometimes mistakes happen and a product is ordered incorrectly or the product needs to be redone for some reason. Your product prices should be high enough to cover the cost of re-making that product if necessary. Also consider what the market will bear. When you increase prices, you will likely lose clients who are accustomed to pay-ing the old prices. This just means that you have to find new clients who value your work. Michael communicates pricing to clients as needed, a little bit at a time. The family welcome brochure lists starting prices for certain products. Clients get an understanding about where pricing is generally. If they are interested in a particular product, he will give the price for that product. He suggests not having a printed price list and certainly not giving the client a printed price list for review. All of the workshop attendees were so very grateful for Michael sharing his experience and knowledge. We were inspired to find our value and put that into practice in our own businesses. At the end of the workshop, Michael provided feedback for several attendees who had brought marketing pieces for review. What a great way to end the day – specific guidance on our own businesses to help us be more successful and profitable right away!

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT LIGHTING MODIFIERS LAURA MANSUR'S PPA MERIT PROGRAM RECAP by Jim McCallum

vibe as the result. It was very interesting to note how the complementary color from the gelled light reflecting off the black backdrop added not only a sense of drama but also a feeling of balance to the photos as a whole. In the afternoon session Amber’s boyfriend Caleb became the subject of an fun lighting experiment that Laura dreamed up. The class used Laura’s studio lights to closely recreate the lighting used for a promotional photo cover story about Woody Harrelson. Laura even brought in a hat similar to Woody’s for Caleb to wear which he readily did with even a bit of swagger. Recreating the lighting used on a pro photo essay gave the class members both a challenge and a feeling of achievement once they succeeded. For the final segment of the program each class member was instructed imagine and realize poses of Amber and Caleb in a number of girlfriend/ boyfriend combinations. It was apparent that our models enjoyed this session as much as the class members enjoyed dreaming up romantic postures and positions. At the end of this full day program everyone felt they had made new friends as well as having learned a great deal about studio lighting. We certainly hope Laura can be convinced to give additional programs in the future.

BUILDING AND BRANDING YOUR SITE WITH WORDPRESS LESLIE CERVANTES' WORKSHOP RECAP by Kevin Falcon, Cr.Photog., CPP

On March 24, Leslie Cervantes presented a workshop to our members who were ready to jump in and set up a blog website. After introducing herself to the group, she discussed ideas on how to brand your site. There were questions that you needed to think about and answer in order to determine what your brand and style of photography is and how to translate that into the website. She discussed how one goes about registering a domain name and secure web hosting. Next up, setting up the WordPress blog. Then adding widgets and plugins to make the site easier to manage and customer friendly. Themes to create a look for the website was also discussed with

Leslie offering many resources to purchase or get free themes. After installation of your website, the hard work of creating content begins. Leslie shared her journey and provided helpful hints as well as the sections and content that you must have in order to get recognized by the search engines. Lots of discussion on image size for websites and optimizing images. Especially now that over 50% of website traffic now comes from mobile devices it’s important to take this into account. To get good SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, photo tagging was discussed thoroughly so your site is properly searched by Google and other search engines. Our afternoon went quickly but it provided everyone with all you needed to get up and running with a WordPress website. Now to start adding that content! THE VIEWFINDER Fonts: Aparajita and Mistral

PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES

Laura presented a well-planned and staged Merit Program for six lucky participants on Saturday April 6, 2019. Laura brought in her friend Amber, a very talented model, for the class members to photograph with a wide and progressive range of light modifiers. Starting with a single Photek SoftLighter Umbrella as the main light the class photographed Amber in generally standard poses which were then recreated with the addition of a series of various fill lights: strip, hair, and reflector to see how each one changed and enhanced the look, mood and catch lights of the resulting photo. All the variation in lights and angles led to interesting discussions and reworking of lighting effects. As a second phase Laura turned down the studio overhead lighting and set up her beauty light highlighting Amber on a couch and added a gelled light to add a complementary color to a black backdrop. The lighting effect was stunningly different than the earlier ‘normal’ lighting session with a notedly ‘40s Hollywood “Noire”

FIRST STEPS: MARKETING

PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES

CAROL ANDREWS WORKSHOP RECAP by Karen Butts, M.Photog., Cr., CPP Carol Andrews is such a gem! I wish I could bottle up her knowledge, along with her bubbly personality and her incredible cooking skills, then drink it and become her clone! So much information was generously shared at her lovely home filled with beautiful and interesting art. Carol is an open book, a giver, and wants to help everyone succeed. She is one talented lady! Oh, and a whole bunch of fun and the Red Beans and Rice was A M A Z I N G! Presently, Carol is a photographic and mixed media artist. The link to her website is https://www.carolandrewsfineart.com/. Over the years, she has evolved and worn many hats including working for PPA as an approved business instructor and consultant. She mentioned that PPA has a Benchmark Business Guide and a Business Challenge that we should all take advantage of. Are you right or left brained? Chances are you are right brained, which is the creative side. We need to be exercising the left side of our brain to develop good marketing. Carol stated that 90% of small business owners, such as creative minded photographers, have no training in business, which is so critical in becoming successful. Much information was shared about how to market your business as well as other great tips about running a business. She stressed “Marketing needs to be a weekly priority.” She suggested setting aside Mondays to focus on just that. She stated that one of our biggest challenges is noise. We were asked to leave our phones in a box near her front door so we could focus on her presentation. She recommended creating a daily, 30 minute “retreat” without outside interference in order to refocus and become centered. Numerous resources about marketing were shared, including a book called “This is Marketing” by Seth Godin. She gave use examples of things that worked for her, one of which is partnering with other businesses, only if you can make it a win-win situation.

10 MAY 2019 Fonts: Aparajita and Mistral

THE VIEWFINDER

Here are some other tidbits that Carol shared: 1) She highly recommends working with nonprofits, which is a great way to make connections. 2) Make a donation to something your client appreciates in their name. 3) Take someone to lunch and find out who they know. You just never know where that may lead. 4) Several times she said, “Ask yourself these questions.” “How Can I?” and “What if?” 5) Be grateful. Send personal notes, in the snail mail. Get away from technology, and people will notice. She mentioned Gail Nogle, who is famous for her prompt, personal thank you notes. Gail designed a card that leaves room to attach one of the client’s images to the front. Carol has lovely post cards with her beautiful artwork on the front to use for her thank you notes. 6) We were asked to go through several mind stretching “exercises,” one being to describe our work with as many adjectives as we could come up with. Using a thesaurus can be helpful. She suggested that we use these words in our marketing and sales presentations.

We are so blessed to have such a versatile, talented guild member that we can call one of our own. If you missed Carol’s workshop, cross your fingers and hopefully she will do another one someday. And if you’re lucky, she might even make some Red Beans and Rice!

THE VIEWFINDER Fonts: Aparajita and Mistral

PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES

Carol said that she is always evolving and growing. “You will set yourself apart if you don’t do what everyone else is doing!” She said “You can’t read the label when you’re inside the bottle.” Listen to your clients and finds out what they are looking for. We need to get out of ourselves and find out what the client likes and would buy. Find out where they like to shop. Ask them to bring you images from magazines that speak to them. The key word here is “listen” and then act on it. Involve them in the process and they will be more emotionally attached to the images.

FROM OUR MEMBERS

THE BENEFITS OF SERVICE by Kevin Falcon, Cr.Photog., CPP As my time of service on the board comes to a close, I would like to share my reflections on the benefits of service to your guild. I also hope to inspire you to consider joining a committee and becoming more involved. When I joined the guild back in 2012, you could have knocked me over if you told me that I would be joining committees, serving on the board, and taking the full tour of service through our wonderful organization. I remember my first meeting, back when Curley Marshall, M. Photog., Cr., CPP was president. At that meeting they asked for volunteers to help on committees. I joined three committees to get fully involved and to also meet other guild members. Looking back, I realize this was a great decision and I am glad that I got involved. I have made some great friends who I have had the pleasure to serve with on committees, the board, and also work with on photography jobs. Shortly after serving on committees, I was approached by then executive director, Tom Hathcock, M.Photog. Cr., CPP, who asked me about serving on the PPGH Board. “Who me?” I replied with a laugh. After interviewing with the board, I was voted in and joined as a director at large in 2013 and my board service began. I was already working with Karen Butts, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, on the membership committee and I continued to work with her on her membership projects improving the membership area as well as serving as the website committee chair. It was a busy but fun time serving and getting to know everyone. Fast forward to now and I have served in every board position with the exception of executive director. In all, I have served on ten different committees, have met and got to know numerous members, and have learned more than I could ever learn in a book! The friendships I’ve gained from these interactions with members and through my service to the guild has been priceless. I challenge you to try it. In review, let’s look at the benefits you can expect, to enjoy, from service. In short: • Networking • Learning New Skills • Meeting New Friends 12 MAY 2019 Fonts: Aparajita and Mistral

• Assistance When Needed • Satisfaction of Knowing You Contributed to The Success of The Guild

Did I pique your interest in getting involved? I hope so. If you are new to the guild, this is the best way to get to know your guild, what it has to offer you and learn from your fellow members. If you are a seasoned guild member, remember that you are now in a position to share your knowledge with newer members. Start small if you do not have the extra time right now and join one committee. The guild always has a need for an extra pair of hands. Here is a list of the committees. If you have a question about a committee, come and ask me at a meeting. I probably have served on that committee and maybe even chaired it!
