Former NFL MVP QB to headline Celebrity Weekend By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE Washington Redskins will be the latest professional sports team to be making their way to the Bahamas in 2017 when former National Football League MVP quarterback Doug Williams headlines a Celebrity Weekend in May. According to Jeff Rodgers, who is responsible for the Ministry of Tourism’s promotion of sports in Washington DC, Williams is eager to showcase the Redskins’ organisation as a part of the festivities. The Ministry of Tourism and the Redskins camp held a joint press conference on Monday to make the official announcement. The three-day event from May 18-20 will include a golf tournament, a dinner cruise and a flag football camp for close to 500 youngsters. “We are looking at doing some-

because we will have a NFL Super Bowl MVP headlining the show.” During the camp, the 61-yearold Williams, who was the first

starting African-American quarterback in the NFL, will talk about his success in the league after he got drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round as the 17th pick overall in 1978. Williams is best known for his remarkable performance in Super Bowl XXII in 1988 when Williams was named the MVP after he passed for a Super Bowl record 340 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. He also became the first player in Super Bowl history to pass for four touchdowns in a single quarter, and four in a half. Rodgers said as a part of his responsibility in Washington, he also tries to find ways to get people to come to the Bahamas and put on sporting activities. “This is just a part of my responsibility working in sports tourism in the Ministry of Tourism,” Rodgers said. “I’m very proud of the relationship that we have developed with the Redskins and now to have to

forge a relationship with Doug Williams. “When he comes to town next week, he is expected to bring in at least five players from the Redskins to assist him in the football camp. But of course there will be a lot of other celebrities who will be coming here to be a part of the week of activities.” Additionally, some of Williams’ teammates from the Super Bowl team are expected to accompany him along with some of the top brass in the organisation. While the camp is expected to become an annual event, the Redskins are hoping to hold their corporate staff meeting in the Bahamas in 2017. Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder, who owns a home in Lyford Cay, flew down “a plane full” of supplies that included batteries, bottled water, Cliff Bars and palettes of other non-perishable food to assist the Bahamas immediately after the passing of Hurricane Matthew.

Buddy scores four in season opener By BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jusuf Nurkic scored 23 points, Will Barton added 22, and the Denver Nuggets survived a dominant performance by Anthony Davis to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans 107-102 in both teams’ regular season opener last night. Davis had 50 points, 16 rebounds, seven steals, five assists and four blocks. His production helped New Orleans trim a deficit as large as 14 late in the second quarter down to two points in the waning minutes. He simply didn’t have enough help. The rest of the Pelicans combined to shoot 21 of 58. Tim Frazier scored 15 for the Pelicans. E’Twaun Moore added 10 points, but missed a 3-point attempt that could have tied it with 24 seconds left. Buddy Hield, of the Bahamas, scored four points in his NBA regular season debut. He also dished out three assists and grabbed a rebound. Danilo Gallinari scored

15 for Denver and Wilson Chandler added 12 points. Denver built its largest lead when Barton hit a 3 and a layup to spark a 9-2 run that made 60-46 in the final minute of the second quarter. The Nuggets still led by 10, at 87-77, when Kenneth Faried’s hook shot from 5 feet opened scoring in the fourth quarter, but New Orleans managed to keep its deficit within single digits for most of the final period, pulling as close as 98-84 on Frazier’s driving layup. A few possessions later, Davis cut into the lane for a layup that pulled the Pelicans to 100-98 with 2:32 to go and brought the crowd to its feet. Denver, which had shot 46.9 per cent (30 of 64) through three quarters, made just seven of 19 field goals in the fourth quarter as New Orleans turned up its defensive intensity. But the Nuggets played solid defence of their own, forcing a pair of missed shots and a Davis turnover in the final half-minute. Denver also made seven of eight free throws in the final 1:39.

Rising soccer star Ricardo McPhee reflects on ‘great season’ By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net RICARDO McPhee, one of the Bahamas junior national soccer team players, concluded an outstanding two-year sting at Lyndon Institute. McPhee and the No. 11 ranked Viking soccer team got shut out 3-0 on Tuesday by the No.6 Vurr Burton as they got eliminated out of the Capital League, a collection of highly competitive teams from across the northern half of Vermont. “It was a great season,” said McPhee, in putting everything in perspective. “We are a very diversified group of players, but we

came together and played very well.” While McPhee was the lone Bahamian on the team, he was one of the 10 different nationalities that make up the 18-man roster for Lyndon Institute. “We’ve been through a lot,” McPhee said. “A few years ago, we were a team that wasn’t expected to do anything, but we came together and is now regarded as a team that is expected to win.” Unfortunately, the Viking suffered their biggest loss at the worst time of the year. Yet, they felt they lived up to their motto: “As One, we play as one, we win or lose as one.” McPhee, who enrolled at Lyndon Institute two years ago out of

RICARDO MCPHEE in action.

Noble Preparatory Academy, said he’s quite pleased with the way he performed for the Division 1 high school team in Lyndon, Vermont. “It was a lot different from high school in the Bahamas,” McPhee pointed out. “It’s a lot of hard work and you have to want to succeed for yourself. The teachers here are down on you to do your work, but you have to push yourself to achieve your goals.” As a member of the junior national team, the 5-foot, 11-inch striker and mid-defender said he went to Lyndon Institute a little more prepared for the challenge of playing in the United States and now he’s eager to see where his talent will take him after he

graduates from high school next year. “They looked up to me for my talent and my skills,” said McPhee about playing overseas. “That made it an easy transition for me on the team.” Once he graduates from high school, McPhee said he would like to enroll at the University of South Florida because it’s close to home or he wouldn’t mind going to Europe to play where he has some contacts for a few professional camps. “It’s been good playing with this team,” McPhee summed up. “We’re a hard working team and we did what was best for the team and that was what made the difference in our success this year.”

JAGUARS, TITANS LOOKING FOR AFC SOUTH WIN IN LONE NIGHT GAME By TERESA M WALKER AP Pro Football Writer NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans have been so bad in recent years that each sees the other as an opportunity for a rare win. In the woeful AFC South, tonight not only offers the lone prime-time opportunity this season for both teams, but the chance for a huge step up in the division. “This is important ...” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. “We’ve got to win a division game and stay in the pack, and hopefully come out of it at some point.” The Jaguars (2-4) may have just gotten a visit from worried owner Shad Khan,

but they at least have an AFC South win. The Titans (3-4) still are looking for such a victory, yet are only a game in back of Houston for the division lead. A popular pick to win this division before the season started, the Jaguars were routed 33-16 by Oakland on Sunday to end a two-game winning streak. They are trying to remain undefeated inside the division, though is just Jacksonville’s second AFC South game. “That is the biggest goal right now,” Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles said. “You treat every week like a one-game season, and it is the most important game we ever played.” Jacksonville is the only team the Titans beat in

Nashville each of the past two seasons, and they want to wrap up a three-game home stand by adding the Jaguars to a list of home wins that includes only winless Cleveland after losing 34-26 to Indianapolis on Sunday. • Here are some things to watch tonight: MARIOTA’S TOUCHDOWNS: Tennessee’s Marcus Mariota finds himself in good company as he prepares to celebrate his 23rd birthday Sunday. He currently ranks fifth all-time for most TD passes before a quarterback’s 23rd birthday behind Drew Bledsoe of New England and Minnesota’s Fran Tarkenton (40),

TITANS QB Marcus Mariota (left) and Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles. The Jaguars and Titans play tonight in Nashville. (AP) followed by Josh Freeman (35) with Tampa Bay and Jameis Winston (34), who turns 23 in January. Mariota has 31 TD passes in 19 career games — eight over

the past three games, tying New England’s Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford of Detroit for most in the NFL in that stretch. MARIOTA’S TURNOVERS: But the Titans quarterback is 2-8 at home with 19 turnovers in his career. Seven of those have come this season, with at least one in each home game. His latest turnover cost the Titans a chance at a comeback against Indianapolis, and he had an interception wiped out by a penalty away from the play. STILL SEARCHING: Bortles raised eyebrows Tuesday by saying the Jaguars are “still trying to find an identity.” It’s Bortles third year in the league and second in the same system. Bortles said the offence is still searching to find out what it does well. This much is certain: The Jaguars have to cut down on penalties and turnovers “to have any chance of being successful,” Bortles said. The Jaguars will be facing a Titans secondary missing two starters with cornerback Perrish Cox (concussion) and safety Rashad Johnson (neck) both declared out. STOPPING THE RUN: Titans running back DeMarco Murray leads the AFC and ranks third in the

NFL with 633 yards rushing, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Murray also has run for at least 100 yards in three of his past five games. The Jaguars will try to slow down Murray without their best run stopper. Defensive tackle Roy Miller was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a torn right Achilles tendon, leaving Abry Jones and Sen’Derrick Marks to handle the position the rest of the season. Jones has two career starts, and Marks is trying to get back to his 2014 form after missing time with a torn knee ligament and an elbow injury. LOSING CONTROL?: Although it sure seemed like the Jags were spiralling out of control against Oakland, players and coach Gus Bradley insist it did little to affect them moving forward. Receiver Marqise Lee was penalised for using a racial slur. Defensive tackle Malik Jackson was ejected after picking up two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for using abusive language toward an official. And cornerback Jalen Ramsey was ejected for fighting. Throw in the team’s inability to run the ball and Bortles’ penchant for poor passes, and the Jaguars looked like a team on the verge of a complete meltdown.

Cubs top Indians to even World Series 1-1 By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — Jake Arrieta made a teasing run at history, Kyle Schwarber drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs brushed off a shutout to even the World Series with their first Fall Classic win in 71 years, 5-1 over the Cleveland Indians in Game 2 last night. Arrieta carried a nohitter into the sixth inning, briefly invoking Don Larsen’s name, before the Indians touched him for two hits and a run. However, the right-hander helped give Chicago just what it needed — a split at Progressive Field — before the Cubbies return to their Wrigley Field den for the next three games starting Friday night. The Cubs hadn’t won in the Series since beating Detroit 8-7 in 1945 to force Game 7. The free-swinging Schwarber, who made it back for Chicago’s longawaited Series return after missing most of the season with an injured left knee, hit an RBI single in the third off Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer and had another in the Cubs’ three-run fifth — highlighted by Ben Zobrist’s run-scoring triple.

Even the presence of star LeBron James and the NBA champion Cavaliers, sporting their new rings, couldn’t stop the Indians from losing for the first time in six home games this postseason. And Cleveland manager Terry Francona’s magical touch in October finally fizzled as he dropped to 9-1 in Series games. With rain in the forecast, Major League Baseball moved the first pitch up an hour in hopes of avoiding delays or a postponement. It turned out to be a good call as the game went on without a hitch and ended after more than four hours as light rain was beginning to fall. Arrieta and the Cubs provided the only storm. The bearded 30-year-old coasted through five innings without allowing a hit, the first pitcher to get that deep in a Series game with a no-hitter since David Cone of the New York Yankees in 1998. For a brief period, Arrieta looked as if he might challenge Larsen’s gem — a perfect game — in 1956 before Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, a die-hard Cubs fan as a kid, doubled with one out in the sixth.

NBA CAPSULES PACERS 130, MAVERICKS 121 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Myles Turner scored 30 points, tied his career high with 16 rebounds and made a 3-pointer with 1:18 left in overtime to start an 8-0 run that allowed the Indiana Pacers to close out a 130-121 victory last night over the Dallas Mavericks. Three-time All-Star Paul George added 25 points, including another 3 with 55 seconds left to seal Indiana’s fifth seasonopening win in six years. Deron Williams scored 25 points, while J.J. Barea and Dirk Nowitzki each added 22 as the Mavs lost their fifth straight in the series. They still haven’t won in Indianapolis since February 2014. Dallas didn’t tie the score or take a lead until the fourth quarter, yet still forced overtime when Harrison Barnes’ open 3-pointer made it 115-all with 2.3 seconds left. Turner could have won it with a long buzzer-beating 3, but it bounced off the back of the rim.

HORNETS 107, BUCKS 96 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 23 points and 14 rebounds in his return from a shoulder injury, Roy Hibbert added 15 points, and the Hornets opened their season with a victory over the Bucks. The Hornets led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter before fending off a late charge from Milwaukee. The Bucks, who looked lackluster for much of the game, drew energy from Greg Monroe’s hustle in the paint and Jason Terry’s floater that cut the lead to 93-85 with 5:08 left. But the Hornets held on down the stretch, getting a straightaway 3 from Marvin Williams for a 12-point lead with 3:21 left. The 7-foot-2 Hibbert had a couple of rim-rocking dunks in the third quarter that helped build the 20-point lead. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 31 points. CELTICS 122, NETS 117 BOSTON (AP) — Isaiah Thomas had 25 points and nine assists, Jae Crowder added 21

points and Al Horford pitched in 11 in his Boston debut as the Celtics survived a late scare to beat the Nets. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 21 for Brooklyn, including a 3-pointer to make it 120-117 with 47 seconds left after the Nets erased most of a 23-point deficit against the Boston bench. But he missed one with a chance to tie it after Joe Harris intercepted Thomas’ cross-court pass, and the Celtics were able to hold on. Justin Hamilton came off the bench to score 19 points and grab 10 rebounds for the Nets in coach Kenny Atkinson’s debut. RAPTORS 109, PISTONS 91 TORONTO (AP) — DeMar DeRozan scored 40 points and Jonas Valanciunas added a careerhigh 32 as the Raptors opened their season with a victory over the Pistons. DeRozan made a career-high 17 field goals on 27 shots and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line, while Valanciunas was 10 for 15 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds. Valanciunas’ previous career high was 31, also against the Pistons, on Jan. 12,

Whiteside powers Heat to season-opening win By TERRANCE HARRIS Associated Press ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Miami center Hassan White had 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots and point guard Goran Dragic added 16 points as the Heat cruised to a 108-96 season-opening victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. The Heat, taking advantage of the one-game suspension of Orlando center Bismack Biyombo, dominated inside all game with Whiteside and Willie Reed off the bench. Neither Nikola Vucevic nor Serge Ibaka could match the athleticism and strength of the 7-foot Whiteside inside. The new-look Heat, playing without Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh this season, outscored the Magic in the paint 74-36 and outrebounded them 52-44. Vucevic finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Evan Fournier added 20 points. Ibaka, making his debut with the Magic, managed 14 points on 6-of-17 shooting. With Whiteside blocking shots and altering others, the Heat opened a 66-58 lead midway through the third quarter courtesy of a 7-0 run and never looked back. The game had been tied 13 times and the lead had changed teams 14 times up to that point. The Magic’s seasonopening loss spoiled the debut of new coach Frank

tween the franchises. “Playing Miami the first game is special,” Fournier said. “We don’t like them and they don’t like us. It’s no secret.”

Orlando allowed Miami to shoot 48 percent from the field. TIP-INS Heat: Second-year guard Josh Richardson did not play Wednesday night due to a sprained MCL in his right knee. ... Both Tyler Johnson and James Johnson came off the bench to give the Heat a boost, scoring eight points each in the first half. Magic: Point guard Elfrid Payton had a strong first half with 12 points, which included going 8 for 8 from the free throw line to help Orlando to a 53-50 halftime lead. HEATED RIVALY Orlando guard Evan Fournier says there is no better opponent for the Magic to start the season with than their in-state rival Miami. There is no love lost be-

majors this year. Cubs lefty Mike Montgomery replaced Arrieta and worked two scoreless innings before Aroldis Chapman came in and unleashed his 103 mph heat

MIDDLE MAN With Biyombo serving an NBA-mandated onegame suspension for exceeding the flagrant foul limit in last season’s playoffs, the Magic had to shift some things around. Ibaka had to slide over and play center quite a bit when Orlando went to its smaller lineup and Vucevic went to the bench. But there is no question the Magic miss Biyombo’s presence on both ends of the court. “Bis is a monster and he is our best screener and probably our best offensive rebounder,” Fournier said. “He is just a guy with tons of energy and he plays super hard. He’s big for us.” UP NEXT Heat: Miami will open its home schedule on Friday against the Charlotte Hornets without Wade on the roster for the first time since the Heat drafted him in in the first round in 2003. Wade is playing for the Chicago Bulls. Magic: On Friday Orlando begins an early season three-game road swing with the first stop at The Palace of Auburn Hills to take on the Detroit Pistons. The Magic will also play NBA champion Cleveland and then Philadelphia on the trip.

while getting the last four outs. The teams will have an off day before the series resumes with Game 3 at Wrigley, which will host its first Series game since Oct. 6, 1945, when tavern owner Billy Sianis was asked to leave with his pet goat, Murphy, and a curse was born. Josh Tomlin will start for the Indians, who will lose the designated hitter in the NL ballpark, against Kyle Hendricks. Schwarber might also wind up on the bench after two days as the DH. With a gametime temperature of 43, the weather was more fitting for the Browns and Bears to bang heads than the boys of summer. The Cubs were the ones who came up thumping after being blanked 6-0 in Game 1 by Corey Kluber and Cleveland’s shut-down bullpen. Zobrist’s one-out triple triggered the fifth as the Cubs opened a 5-0 lead, not that Arrieta needed it. After Anthony Rizzo walked following a 10-pitch at-bat, Zobrist laced a ball off Zach McAllister that was going to be a double until right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall slipped and fell. Rizzo was waved around

2015. Tobias Harris had 22 points and Marcus Morris had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Pistons, who lost for the eighth time in their last 11 games against Toronto. DeRozan broke Vince Carter’s opening-night record of 39 points, set against the-then New Jersey Nets in 2003. Alvin Robertson is the only other Toronto player to record a 30-point opening-night game, in the franchise’s first-ever game, also against New Jersey, in 1995. GRIZZLIES 102, TIMBERWOLVES 98 MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Mike Conley scored 24 points, Marc Gasol added 18 and the Grizzlies overcame a slow start for a victory over the Timberwolves. Conley and Gasol led a push down the stretch as the Grizzlies erased a 90-86 deficit the final 2:44. Zach Randolph had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis. Andrew Wiggins led the Timberwolves with 25 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 21. Zach LaVine added 19

and Zobrist hustled into third. Schwarber followed with his second RBI and reliever Bryan Shawn later walked No. 9 hitter Addison Russell with the bases loaded. Unlike his start in Toronto on Oct. 17, when his stitched cut opened up and Bauer was forced to make a bloody departure in the first inning, his finger held up fine. The Cubs, though, put a few nicks in him in 3 2/3 innings. The drone accident has brought attention to the quirky Bauer, and one Chicago fan tried to rattle the right-hander by sending a smaller version of the remote-controlled, flying object that cut him. Bauer posted a photo of it on Twitter, saying “I see the @Cubs fans love me! How nice of them to send me a gift!” The Cubs, who were off balance from the start against Kluber, scored their first run in a Series game since ‘45 in the first on Rizzo’s RBI double. Bauer needed 51 pitches to get through two innings, and he was one strike from getting out of the third unscathed when Chicago turned a walk and to singles into a 2-0 lead.

points. The game was the debut of two coaches with new teams, Tom Thibodeau for Minnesota and former Miami Heat assistant David Fizdale with Memphis. Both teams had big runs in the game, Minnesota at the start and Memphis to open the second half. Then the game settled into a tight affair in the fourth quarter. THUNDER 103, 76ERS 97 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Russell Westbrook had 32 points, 12 rebounds and took over late to lead the Thunder to a victory over the 76ers. Westbrook scored the decisive points on opening night for the Thunder in their first game since franchise star Kevin Durant left in free agency and signed with the Golden State Warriors. Joel Embiid scored 20 points in 22 minutes in his first game for the Sixers since they made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft. Embiid had sat out the last two seasons with foot injuries. He received a roaring ovation when he was introduced and fans went wild on every shot.

Nishikori, Del Potro advance easily at Swiss Indoors BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Kei Nishikori and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets at the Swiss Indoors yesterday to stay on course for a quarterfinals meeting. Third-seeded Nishikori of Japan eased past Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 7-6 (3), 6-2 in a second round match. Nishikori did not take any of his six break point chances in an error-strewn first set, and then upped his play in the second against the 38th-ranked Lorenzi. Nishikori completed his second

win of the week before Del Potro even stepped on court at Basel after winning the Stockholm title on Sunday. Del Potro was playing his first match at the St Jakobshalle arena since winning back-to-back finals against hometown favourite Roger Federer in 2012 and 2013. The 42nd-ranked Argentine got a wild card entry after long absences due to left wrist injuries, and beat 64th-ranked Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. Earlier, Richard Gasquet of France became the third seeded player to exit in the opening round. The seventh-seeded Gasquet, who won the Antwerp title on Sunday, retired when trailing 6-2, 2-1 against Argentina’s Guido Pella. Eighth-seeded American Jack Sock, who lost the Stockholm final to Del Potro, made a winning start, 6-3, 6-3 against Adrian Mannarino of France.

WTA Finals: Kuznetsova makes semi-finals after beating Pliskova By SANDRA HARWITT Associated Press SINGAPORE (AP) — Svetlana Kuznetsova became the first player to reach the last four of the WTA Finals after sealing her second round-robin victory this week, beating Karolina Pliskova yesterday. Kuznetsova fell to the ground, smiling, after securing a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) win on a fourth match point. “I felt the support of the crowd and I couldn’t let anyone down,” said Kuznetsova, who at 22-8 has the most three-set match wins this year. “So I had to fight.” When defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska prevailed over Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the second match, the Pole’s win guaranteed Kuznetsova’s progress in the competition. In five previous WTA Finals appearances, Kuznetsova had never advanced beyond the round-robin stage. Muguruza’s 0-2 standing eliminates the Spaniard from semi-final contention. round-robin matches today. Kuznetsova served for the match at 5-3, but never

had a match point until the tiebreaker. Pliskova had an opportunity to serve out the match at 6-5. Kuznetsova returned to a top 10 ranking this year for the first time since she last played at the WTA Finals in 2009. When the two-time Grand Slam champion was asked what’s helped her recapture her flair for the game, she said: “My heart. I just love (it). I’ve not been at my best my past years. Something changed this year and I’m just enjoying my game.” Kuznetsova travelled to Singapore after securing the last berth in the yearend competition by winning the Moscow title last Saturday. On Monday, a fatigued Kuznetsova saved a match point to capture a dramatic three-set win over Radwanska. During the match, Kuznetsova chopped off a portion of her hair braid that was flapping in her face. Kuznetsova suggested if a movie was to be made of her last week it should be titled either “Life of a Hustler” or “Workaholic.”

TOP-SEEDED MURRAY BEATS KLIZAN IN THREE SETS IN VIENNA OPENER By ERIC WILLEMSEN Associated Press VIENNA (AP) — Topseeded Andy Murray lost a set for the first time in 11 matches as he beat Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-0 in the opening round of the Erste Bank Open yesterday. The second-ranked Scot, who won the event two years ago, came off back-to-back tournaments wins without dropping a set in Beijing and Shanghai. “I think I could have done better. For sure it was a tough match because Martin goes for his shots a lot,” Murray said. “It’s not that

easy to get into you rhythm. He moves very well, too.” Murray saved three break points in the opening game but his serve came not under threat for the rest of the first set. He broke Klizan early in the second but dropped serve in an error-strewn game at 4-2. Murray was broken again when serving for the match at 6-5 and lost the tiebreaker from 5-4 up. “I didn’t serve that well the first two sets and that got me in trouble at the end of the second set,” the Scot said. “But I managed to serve better and raise my game in the third set.” Murray conceded just two

points on own serve in the final set. He will next play Gilles Simon of France. Also, Karen Khachanov of Russia joined Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and John Isner of the United States in the quarterfinals. Khachanov saved a set point and won the last five games to defeat Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-2, 7-5 to set up a quarterfinal against Karlovic. The eighth-seeded Croat came back from 5-1 down in the final set to beat Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Hercegovina 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (5). Isner beat former champion Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (2). The 27th-

ranked American failed to break the Spaniard’s serve and missed a match point at 5-4 and again at 6-5 in the final set. Isner dominated the tiebreaker and closed out the win on his 31st ace. “The match was so close. My serve helped me a lot,” said Isner, who will play Murray or Simon in his fifth quarterfinal of the season. In first-round play, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany rallied to beat Stephane Robert of France 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), and Albert RamosVinolas of Spain advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Italy’s Fabio Fognini, who had not lost to Ramos-Vinolas in eight previous matches.

United beats City 1-0 in derby match in English League Cup By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Jose Mourinho got his own back on great managerial rival Pep Guardiola as Manchester United beat a weakened Manchester City 1-0 in the fourth round of the English League Cup yesterday, with Juan Mata scoring the second-half winner. Six weeks after City’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the Premier League, United got a measure of revenge as Mourinho’s decision to play a virtually full-strength team paid off. Mata sidefooted home a low shot from 10 metres in the 54th minute following a lay-off by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ensuring City is now winless in six games under Guardiola — the worst run of the Spaniard’s distinguished coaching career. Guardiola rested most of his key players — starting 19-year-olds Aleix Garcia and Pablo Maffeo among his fringe players — and City faded after a decent

start, failing to have a shot on target in an error-strewn match. “No regrets,” Guardiola said, referring to his team lineup. It was Mourinho’s fourth win in 18 meetings with Guardiola and an important victory psychologically for United, coming three days after a 4-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League Mourinho’s heaviest loss in English soccer. “It was a big defeat and numbers that the history of this club does not deserve,” Mourinho said, adding: “We had to give something back.” United’s more physical and powerful players had more of an impact as the match wore on. Paul Pogba, who was relatively quiet again, had a left-foot shot tipped onto the post by City goalkeeper Willy Caballero five minutes before Mata made the breakthrough. The titleholders are out — although Guardiola said the League Cup was the least of his priorities this season and that was reflected in his starting lineup.

field after this second win there in four days. Cheikhou Kouyate headed in Mark Noble’s cross in the 11th minute and Edimilson Fernandes added a second in the 48th to see off a weakened Chelsea lineup. Gary Cahill scored a late consolation goal for the visitors.

Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling were brought on as substitutes in the second half, but to little effect. Vincent Kompany, City’s injury-prone captain, started for the second straight game but was substituted at halftime. “He told us he is tired and not ready to play the second half,” Guardiola said.

There has been crowd trouble at previous matches this season at the stadium, West Ham’s new home following its move from Upton Park. For this game, supporters faced enhanced security checks and a larger police presence than normal. West Ham is starting to look more at home on the
