‘Tum Tum’ shines as a leader for Spartans By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net LOURAWLS “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr has moved to the forefront as a leader for the Michigan State Spartans and in his upcoming junior year, head coach Tom Izzo expects him to have his greatest impact on the younger members of the programme. Following the Spartans’ first practice for the 2016-17 season, Izzo addressed a number of issues surrounding the team, highlighted by Nairn’s impact. “I think ‘Tum has been an unbelievable asset in a lot of different ways. BAAA LAUNCHES ‘PROJECT QUICK RELIEF’ By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net AS the restoration efforts for Hurricane Matthew continue throughout the Bahamas, one local sporting organisation has announced its effort to assist. The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations has established “Project Quick Relief,” a fund aimed at aiding persons in need on the affected islands. BAAAs president Rosamunde Carey began the fund with a donation of $500 and encourages all interested persons to deliver donations – whether monetary or essential supplies - to the BAAAs office at the original Thomas A Robinson Stadium. BAAA public relations officer Phillip Gray said the federation saw fit to join the restoration effort immediately. “We wish to focus on monetary donations along with water, non-perishable food, clothing and athletic gear in excellent condition,” Gray said in a press release, “All checks should be made out to the fed-

While the Pelicans were in China taking on the Houston Rockets, Hield said he would welcome the challenge of competing in the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest on All Star Weekend. “I want to be in the

three-point shooting contest in New Orleans and if it’s possible I’d like to do it,” he said. “It’s a challenge to compete with Steph [Curry], Klay [Thompson] and all those guys. You’re competing with the best three-point shooters in the world.” The Golden State Warriors back court of Curry and Thompson have been the last two winners of the contest, winning in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Hield, the former Oklahoma Sooners guard drafted No.6 overall by the New Pelicans, was considered the top shooter in a recent NBA survey polling the league’s incoming rookie class.

Hield got nearly two thirds of the vote, 65.7 per cent, in response to the question. It was the most votes a player ever received for the best shooter question since Curry won 79 per cent of the vote in 2009. Known for his outside shooting, Hield’s senior season in Norman saw him average 25 points, 5.7 rebounds and two assists per game while shooting 50.1 per cent overall and 45.7 per cent from three-point range. In the preseason, Hield has averaged 17 points, 2.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 40 per cent from three, 53 per cent from the field. He finished score-

2ND ANNUAL RUN FOR POMPEY ON OCTOBER 29 THE second annual Run for Pompey, originally set for Georgetown, Exuma on October 8, has been rescheduled for October 29. “We made a decision on October 2 to reschedule because of the threat of Hurricane Matthew, not knowing what the impact of the storm would be on The Bahamas,” said Jeff Todd, race founder and director of communications for GIV Bahamas, the outreach arm of Grand Isle Villas. “Fortunately for Grand Isle, which is the host hotel, we are absolutely fine and in fact, we are open today. Everything has fallen into place for the event to be rescheduled for the end of this month, October 29. All of our sponsors have been notified, all of the entrants who are coming in from abroad are being notified, the official timing company was able to make it which

is critical for the quality of the events and our event patron Pauline Davis-Thompson was able to be with us that day. Now we will have more reason than ever to enjoy being together in a healthy, wholesome family environment with friends.” Todd said the organisers were also hoping that the rescheduled event would be a mini-boost to the Exuma economy following the closing of Sandals on property within walking distance of Grand Isle. Participants will have a choice of six options, a 2k ‘George Town Dash’ for youngsters or anyone who wants to take part, a 5k run/walk presented by BAF Financial with proceeds to go to cancer research, 10k half marathon for runners 16 and older, 42k marathon for 18 and older and a 50k ultra marathon, also for those 18 and older.

less in the finale in China, 0-4 from the field in 18 minutes. His numbers have improved since his Summer League performance in Las Vegas where he averaged 16.8 points, 5.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds through five games but struggled shooting at just 34 per cent from the field and 24 per cent from three-point range. In July, the NBA announced the decision to relocate its 2017 All Star Game from Charlotte to New Orleans due to the city’s controversial “bathroom law,” also known as HB2. New Orleans is slated to host the weekend during its midseason break February 17-19, 2017.

FORMER Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow may be grabbing all the headlines for the New York Mets in Fall League play, but Champ Stuart continues his rise in the organisation as well. Stuart was named to the roster of the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Offseason Arizona Fall League. The Scorpions have MLB affiliations with the Mets, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels. “Obviously it’s a privilege and honour to be here with the Mets. I’m just happy to be here, to put on a uniform again and be playing ball again. To play among the best in the minor leagues, it’s really fun right now,” Stuart told Adam Rubin of ESPN. The Arizona Fall League attracts many of the top prospects in the minor leagues. In 2016 he had a season of several milestones includ-

WEEK 5 AWARDS The “This Ain’t What You Want” Award presented by Blue Mountain State quarterback Alex Moran - Derek Anderson. You would think that every backup quarterback wants his shot in the starting lineup. Anderson’s performance Monday night determined that that was a lie. The “There’s A Creepy Old Man Awkwardly Pacing Behind Me And I Think He Wants My Job” Award presented by Donald Trump’s positioning behind Hilary Clinton for much of the second US Presidential debate - Dak Prescott. The Titans game sealed it. This team should easily be 0-5. By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net WEEK 6

Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers RENALDO: Thursday night football is an awful product. Everyone knows it’s an awful product, and you never forget to set your fantasy lineup in time. The NFL decided to double down with this assault on the eyes, “Colour Rush” (By the way Colour Rush is also probably what old timey sportswriters called it when the NFL first integrated decades ago). The home team always wins this thing. CHARGERS over Broncos SANNIE: The Chargers have proved to be a very good at being a terrible team. BRONCOS over Chargers Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Racial Slurs RENALDO: Even in a

loss, Carson Wentz looks like he knows exactly what he’s doing. I’m sold on him in less than five games and I’m forced to talk myself into Ryan Tannehill after five years. Wentz had a rookie moment against the Lions last week but the Eagles still would have won if Ryan Matthews didn’t do exactly what Ryan Matthews always does. On the opposite side, thanks for the hurricane relief supplies Racial Slurs. I’m a fan of the gesture, the mascot… not so much. EAGLES over Racial Slurs SANNIE: Now I said I would never choose the Racial Slurs, but for this week, because they donated to Matthew Hurricane relief here in the Bahamas, they get my vote. RACIAL Slurs over Eagles Jacksonville Jaguars at Chicago Bears RENALDO: How does Gus Bradley still have this job? I feel like he’s been the head coach ever since Tom Coughlin left. When

expectations increase, people select your team as the chic “it” team on the rise, and you start the season 1-3, someone has to take the blame. JAGS over Bears SANNIE: Jacksonville, only because Chicago is really dangerous right now and kind of scary. JAGS over Bears Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots SANNIE: This is really getting old. Unless it’s Cam Newton or my back up baby daddy Russell Wilson, I will always pick Brady. PATS over Bengals RENALDO: At the risk of sounding like Sannie, there’s not much you need to say other than Brady’s back. He returned at the perfect time with two layups from the state of Ohio. We expected the Browns to be awful, but the Bengals are also reeling. Their offensive line allowed four sacks and five hits against Cowboys. Maybe they should’ve kept Alex Cooper. PATS over Bengals

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints RENALDO: I hope Cam Newton rides his scooter to the game. No matter how disappointed the Panther fanbase is in Cam (and they should be because the Panthers may already be out of it), but watching Derek Anderson play should have been the most sobering dose of reality that it absolutely can get worse. PANTHERS over Saints SANNIE: Apparently my Cam is hurt, that’s ok. I’m going to choose him anyway. PANTHERS over Saints Baltimore Ravens at New York Giants RENALDO: I trust any team that fires their offensive coordinator for exactly a week. Usually that head coach pulls out all the stops to prove whatever ineptitude went down absolutely wasn’t his fault. This could be John Harbaugh’s best game. The last time he made the switch, Ravens went on to win Super Bowl. RAVENS over Giants

SANNIE: I used to like Odell but he just seems to be ‘dating’ everyone now. He is too “friendly” for me, if you know what I mean. RAVENS over Giants Pittsburgh Steelers at Miami Dolphins SANNIE: It is getting embarrassing now, the Dophins need a win but I don’t think this is it. STEELERS over Dolphins RENALDO: The Dolphins secondary may retire one at a time at the end of each quarter in this game. This team is awful defensively and their response was to claim Bene Benwikere. If you don’t know who that is, he’s the torched carcass Julio Jones left in his wake after torching the Panthers secondary for 300 yards two weeks ago. That guy…is the upgrade. As if the secondary wasn’t bad enough, the overpaid defensive line, which accounts for over half of the defence’s salary cap, may be even worse. This god awful team is near the bottom

of the league in total yards allowed and rushing yards per attempt. The Steelers are probably going for 50. STEELERS over Dolphins Cleveland Browns at Tennessee Titans SANNIE: So the Browns haven’t won one game? Well that made this choice super easy…. TITANS over Browns RENALDO: Black head coach gets a job we all celebrate the “Rooney Rule.” The thing is, they give him the Browns job, he goes 0-5 (soon to be 0-6) and the next thing you know he becomes Lovie Smith. TITANS over Browns San Francisco 49ers at Buffalo Bills SANNIE: I thought the 49ers were a good team? They seem to be awful this year, or is it every year and I just don’t know? Either way, they aren’t getting my vote this week. BILLS over Niners

Quick picks before the ‘Brief Power Limited’ strikes again LEO B IS BACK He says he was ill week 4, the Dengue Fever had him, and Matthew beat him bad in week 5. He’s back this week but had a serious dilemma awaiting him upon his return to action. Due to missing his picks the last two weeks, he had the option of appearing for his segment on The Press Box in a Dolphin jersey or take a four-game picks penalty, two for each week missed. No big decision I guess. Leo chose the four-game penalty. Welcome back, Leo B.

San Francisco 49ers at Buffalo Bills RENALDO: Black quarterbacks matter. Not you Tyrod Taylor…or you EJ Manuel…or you Cardele Jones. The Bills’ progressive depth chart completely ruined my take on this game. I never know what I’m talking about anyway so if there was anyplace I can justify making a sentimental pick, it’s this game when Kap finally gets the start. The answer’s probably three, so I’m sold. RAIDERS over Chiefs SANNIE: Nope. Not choosing the Raiders. I don’t care if they have won a few games. Not giving Eddie the satisfaction. lot of Mets fans supported me during the Classic, it was a lot of fun to get different guys from different nationalities playing the game of baseball. It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.” Late in the minor league seasons, MLB clubs hold a position draft to determine the players who will participate in the AFL. Most are Double-A and Triple-A players. The league is designed for these prospects to refine their skills and perform in game settings in front of major and minor league baseball scouts and team executives, who are in attendance at almost every game. Play begins shortly after the end of MLB’s regular season in early October and ends in mid-November. Stuart hopes to make an impression this fall and finish his year with something he has not done in a few years – a trip home. “[Travelling] It comes with the territory,” he said, “I haven’t been home in two years but I’m trying to go home this year and spend Christmas with my family.”

think last year was a tough year for him. We just look at him and he is such a tough kid and such a strong kid and is such a pleasant kid. But, those kinds of kids have confidence problems, too. “I think sometimes he is missing shots because he is not quite there. That is where the everyday practice and being under some pressure to score and make shots is going to help him. “With him and Cassius, the neat thing is that we have two guys that are kind of different. One is very athletic and very strong. The other is very crafty and very savvy. One is a very good shooter and one is getting to be a better shooter.

“One is a great defender and one has got to work on his defence. So, I think they complement and help each other. I am not worried about ‘Tum’.” Anticipating a healthy season, Nairn is pegged as one of the upperclassmen leaders of his Spartans. The junior point guard struggled through an injury plagued sophomore year, but Nairn has looked healthy enough this summer to deliver a series of impressive performances at the Moneyball Pro-Am this summer. Nairn made several jumpers from three-point range and even threw down a fastbreak dunk in the title game, a welcome site to the Spartan faithful who witnessed last season’s struggles with the foot injury. Despite a season hampered by injury, “Tum Tum” was still recognised by his Spartans for his leadership at-

tributes. Nairn was awarded the Stephen G Scofes Inspirational Player Award for the second straight season when the Spartans programme hosted its annual Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet for the 2015-16 season. He battled a nagging plantar fasciitis injury all season long but missed just seven games, while ranking among the national leaders in assistto-turnover ratio (7th, 3.78). In 28 games played last season, Nairn averaged 2.8 points and 3.3 assists per game. Prior to the injury, Nairn started all 18 games at point guard and averaged 4.1 points and 4.5 assists in 24.1 minutes per game. He was sidelined for seven games before making a return to the court on February 14.

Kyrgios booed, Nadal loses, Murray wins at Shanghai Masters By JUSTIN BERGMAN Associated Press SHANGHAI (AP) — Nick Kyrgios looked completely disengaged at the Shanghai Masters, like he couldn’t get off the court fast enough. Rafael Nadal fought as hard as he could to prolong his stay in China but came up short. Both players lost in the second round yesterday, though the effort they put forth couldn’t have been more different. Kyrgios was booed by the crowd and admonished by the chair umpire for his lack of professionalism during a 6-3, 6-1 loss to German qualifier Mischa Zverev. The Australian floated in 67 mph (108 kph) first serves, went for aces on his second serves, and argued with a fan. Afterward, he defended his behaviour by saying he didn’t owe the spectators anything and fans could “just leave” if they didn’t like his attitude. Nadal’s late-season struggles continued as he fell to Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-6 (3). The result prompted the Spaniard to contemplate shutting his season down early. Also, Andy Murray reached the third round by beating Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-2.

NICK KYRGIOS

RAFAEL NADAL

ANDY MURRAY

US Open champion Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic also advanced in straight sets. Kyrgios, seeded 12th, arrived in Shanghai as one of the most in-form players in the draw after winning his third title of the season at last week’s Japan Open. But all the matches seemed to catch up to him against Zverev, a player ranked 110th in the world who had only won seven ATP Tour matches all season. At one point in the first set, Kyrgios tapped a soft serve over the net and started walking toward his chair before Zverev had even returned the ball, drawing a rebuke from the chair umpire

during the changeover. “This is a professional tournament,” Ali Nili said. “You have to act like a professional.” Toward the end of the 48-minute match, the crowd started booing and jeering. One man yelled, “Respect the game,” prompting a furious Kyrgios to shout: “You want to come here and play?” Asked afterward if he thought he owed the spectators a better effort, he turned defiant again. “What does that even mean? I’m good at hitting a tennis ball at the net. Big deal. I don’t owe them anything,” he said. “If you don’t like it, I didn’t ask you to come watch. Just leave.”

Kyrgios added that he is so tired from the lengthy season, he wasn’t interested in chasing one of the last spots for the ATP finals next month, either. “I couldn’t care less, to be completely honest with you,” he said. He later sounded apologetic on Twitter, saying, “Not good enough today on many levels, I’m better than that. I can go on about excuses but there are none. Sorry.” Murray said after his match that he understands how Kyrgios might have been feeling, but he still should have given his best effort. “If he didn’t do that, then he will be disappointed with himself

tonight,” he said. “But we’re not perfect. Everyone makes mistakes.” Nadal also has a chance to clinch a spot in the ATP finals he currently sits in seventh position for the eight-man field - but he was unsure at this point if he wanted to prolong his season. “I cannot say now what I’m going (to) do during the next month,” he said. “Sometimes (to) keep competing is not the solution. “Sometimes the solution is practice ... and have a process of training. And maybe that’s an opportunity to do it.” The fourth-seeded Nadal struggled to create depth and pace with his forehand, a problem he attributed to the wrist injury that sidelined him for part of the season. His goal now is to be back in peak condition for the Australian Open at the start of the new year. “I have two months and a half to put myself at the level that I need to be,” Nadal said, “and I have the confidence that I’m going to do it.” Other winners included 11thseeded David Goffin, 13th-seeded Lucas Pouille, Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil. Seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych lost to Marcel Granollers.

Anthony Davis’ status for Pelicans opener up in air By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer ANTHONY Davis was flat on his back, grabbing his right ankle and wincing in pain. And now the New Orleans Pelicans can only wonder if their best player will be ready for opening night. Davis sprained his ankle yesterday in a preseason game against the Houston Rockets in Beijing, part of the NBA Global Games. The All-Star centre was unable to play when last season ended because of shoulder and knee problems, and this season is presumably going to begin with him facing yet another injury issue. “It’s very frustrating,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. “It’s very frustrating in that we can’t seem to get a rhythm or we can’t seem to put the team together because there’s always someone missing.” Davis has never played in more than 68 games in a regular season for New Orleans, missing an average

of 17 contests in each of his first four seasons. He needed surgery on his left knee to fix a problem in March. Davis was scheduled for more evaluation on his ankle today, when the team is back in New Orleans. The Pelicans’ 13-hour flight home from Beijing was scheduled to land around 2:40am Eastern time. New Orleans used 42 different starting lineups in 82 games last season — only one of those lineups for more than six games. And this season is starting with an array of injury concerns for the Pelicans, even before Davis got hurt when he was going against Houston center Nene during the first quarter. Guard E’Twaun Moore (right heel contusion) got hurt Wednesday as well. Tyreke Evans and Quincy Pondexter didn’t even make the trip to China while dealing with the aftermath of knee surgeries, and starting point guard Jrue Holiday is out indefinitely to be with his wife, former US soccer

Harden scored 14 points and handed out eight assists for Houston, which remained unbeaten in four preseason games and swept two matchups with New Orleans on this trip to China. Bobby Brown led the Rockets with 18 points. Quinn Cook had 20 points for New Orleans, on 7 for 9 shooting. ROCKETS: Houston led by 25 points at halftime. ... Rookie Chinanu Onuaku had two points, notable that they came on free throws he shot underhanded — something he did last season in college at Louisville as well.

The Holiday’s daughter was born last month, and Lauren Holiday is expected

to have surgery to remove the benign tumour later this fall. There were four preseason games Wednesday night — San Antonio at Orlando, Milwaukee facing Indiana,

Denver meeting Minnesota and Phoenix travelling to Utah. ROCKETS 116 PELICANS 104 BEIJING —

PELICANS: Langston Galloway had 16 points for New Orleans. ... First-round pick Buddy Hield missed all four of his shots and went scoreless. ... The Pelicans had 27 assists on 36 field goals. UP NEXT: Houston (40) plays host to Memphis on Saturday. New Orleans (1-3) goes to Atlanta on Tuesday.
