dd another historic achievement to the list for high school basketball phenom DeAndre Ayton in his already prolific career. Ayton became just the second Bahamian to be named a McDonald’s High All-American when he was announced as a member of the 2017 roster late Sunday night. He follows current University of Texas guard and Harbour Island native LaShann Higgs, who was named to the girls’ roster in 2015. Ayton, the consensus No.1 player in the class of 2017 and commit to the University of Arizona, will headline the 40th edition of the game, to be hosted at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, on May 29. Ayton, out of Hillcrest Academy, was the only Arizona commit named to the list of the top 24 high school players in the United States. His West team will include other top players such as Gary Trent Jr (Prolific Prep/Duke), Brian Bowen (la Lumiere/Undecided), Troy Brown Jr (Centennial/ Oregon), Trae Young (Norman North/Oklahoma) and Brandon McCoy (Cathedral Catholic/Undecided), who all appeared in the Nike EYBL Bahamas exhibition game this summer. The East team also includes Nike EYBL Bahamas alumni, including Mohammed Bamba (Westtown/Undecided), Wendell Carter Jr (Pace Academy/Duke), Quade Green (Neumann-Goretti/Kentucky), Mitchell Robinson (Chalmette/Western Kentucky), Collin Sexton (Pebblebrook/Alabama), Lonnie Walker (Reading/ Miami0, PJ Washington (Findlay Prep/Kentucky), and Jarred Vanderbilt (Victory Prep/Kentucky). The University of Kentucky Wildcats have four signees in the game while 12 universities will be represented and seven players are still uncommitted. This year’s teams were selected from more than 750 nominees by the McDonald’s All-American

IAAF WORLD RELAYS WILL HAVE MIXED EVENT By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net WITH less than 100 days to go before the start of the third IAAF World Relays, countries are now looking at fielding a team to compete in another discipline when the event returns in April at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. The IAAF has announced over the weekend that they will include a mixed 4 x 400 metre relay, which will close out the two-day event on Saturday night, just after the completion of the traditional meet ending 4 x 400m relays for women and men respectively. Although they didn’t reveal too much details on how the event will be contested, the IAAF did indicate that the mixed relay, comprising of two men and two women, will add to the 2017 programme

JUSTIN LUNN ADDED TO DAVIS CUP TEAM By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association has completed its selection process for the men’s team that will represent the country at the American Zone II Davis Cup tie next month. Justin Lunn, making the team for the first time, has been added as the fourth member, replacing Kevin Major Jr, who is unable to play the tie (because of his school commitments) against Venezuela at the Doral Country Club in Miami, Florida, February 3-5. He joins Philip Major Jr, who has replaced top seed Baker Spencer, who is also unavailable because of school commitments at Vanderbilt University. Swimmers make splash in Swift heptathlon WITH a slightly different format than the regular meet, the Swift Swimming hosted its heptathlon meet at the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim Complex over the weekend. The meet, sponsored by Gunite Pools, saw swimmers compete in a total of seven events to be crowned the most outstanding athletes in their respective age groups. Winning the girls under-8 division was Ellianne Higgs of Swift Swimming. She was the lone competitor in her age group to contest the event. “I felt good. It wasn’t what I expected, but I tried my best,” said Higgs, an eight-year-old third grader at St Andrews. “I didn’t go against any competitors in my age group, but I won against some competitors in the 100m free. I came first in my heat.” Maxwell Daniels, of the Dolphin Swim Club, was the winner of the boys’ under-8 division. He too was the lone competitor. “It was easy, but it was also kind of hard because after my races, I kept getting tighter and tighter,” said Daniels, an eight-year-old third grader at St Francis/Joseph Catholic School. Winning the girls’ 9-10 division was Anjaleah Knowles of SWAT,

who beat out Swift’s Elle Theberge, Giada Bertoldo and Georgia Saddleton. “It was good. I was hoping that I got a trophy and I am thankful that I did,” said nine-year-old Knowles, a fifth grader at Temple Christian. “My performance was good and the competition was good. At the end I thought I wasn’t going to win it.” Maddox Pinder from Abaco Swim Club won the boys 9-10 division over Swift’s Koen Mott and Ayrton Moncur. “I think I did good. The competition was hard,” said 10-yearold Pinder, who is in grade five at Angels Academy. “I had to swim against a lot of people.” Vanaj Paul of the Dolphins emerged as the girls’ 11-12 champion over Laila Burrows, Alexandria Patton and Ariel Evans, all of Swift Swimming, who completed the seven events. “It was good. I tried really hard,” said Paul, a 12-year-old eighth grader at St John’s College. “It was tough, but at the end I did it. I felt as if I did very well.” Erald Thompson III captured the boys’ 11-12 division for Swift as he out-duelled Dolphins’ Rondon Williams for the title. “In this meet, I shaved some time in my events, not all,” said 12-year-old Thompson, who attends St Anne’s School where he is in the eighth grade. “This was a very good meet. FORMER Bahamas head coach Gary White is among the contenders to become coach of the England under-21 soccer team, according to a report by ESPN FC. White, also the former Guam coach and Shanghai Shenxin manager, is up against some of the biggest names in the British game as he goes for the role vacated by new national boss Gareth Southgate. ESPN FC understands that the relatively unknown White has been shortlisted for interview. The other candidates are former Under-21 coach and legendary England defender Stuart Pearce, ex-Manchester United utility player Phil Neville, former Aston Villa and Spurs manager Tim Sher-

captain. Baker and Spencer finished 1-2 and Rolle and Kevin Major Jr were 3-4 at the end of the BLTA’s Georgio Baldacci National Open Challenge in December at the National Tennis Centre. Philip Major Jr and Justin Lunn were fifth and sixth. BLTA president Elwood Donaldson said they are still excited about the make up of the team going into the tie. “Due to college engagement, both Baker and KJ are not able to play in the tie in February,” he said. “But Philip Major, who has been playing very well on the pro circuit winning a US1 Qualifier, has stepped up. “He brings a high level of play to the team and we have added Justin Lunn, who in 2015 was having a very good year, but due to some injuries in 2016, he didn’t have as good a year as he expected. But having a healthy Justin Lunn is just as good as any.” With Newman and Rolle leading the charge, Donaldson said the Bahamas is still in good hands. “Spencer was beaten in three sets by his brother Baker, so it shows the level he’s at and we have the decorated Davis Cup veteran in Marvin Rolle,” Donaldson added. “So we feel pretty

confident that we will do very well. “The tie is being held close in Miami where the Newman brothers train and Philip is leaving this week to train with Spencer, so we feel that with the local and support that we get, we feel we have a very good chance of winning and moving on. We are pretty confident.” If the Bahamas wins the tie, the country will advance to the second round to play against the winner of the tie between Bolivia and El Salvador over the weekend of April 7-9 for the rights to either advance to zone one or remain in zone II for 2017. If the Bahamas loses, the Bahamas will play the loser of Bolivia and El Salvador over the same weekend to either remain in zone II or get demoted to zone III in 2017. With so much on the line, Donaldson said the BLTA is trying to work out a package with Bahamasair to carry a contingent to Miami where Newman is working on getting some of their supporters to attend as well. “The venue seats 500 and 50 has been allotted to the Bahamas, so we are looking to fill that 50 quota and get some more,” he said. “So right now, we are in the process of trying to get some people to go to help add to

Games selection committee, led by Morgan Wootten, committee chairman and legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach. Ayton has risen to the top of the high school basketball circuit after just a few short years and chose to end his recruitment process before his senior season ever began when he announced his decision to attend Arizona in a press conference broadcasted live on ESPN’s SportsCenter last summer. In November, he had the rare opportunity to play at home at the Sand Between Your Toes Showcase and it proved to be a welcoming homecoming experience for the most highly regarded high school basketball prospect in America. Ayton powered his Hillcrest Prep Bruins to a 2-0 outing in the showcase hosted at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. He previously attended the Balboa City School in San Diego, California after he left the Bahamas just over three years ago to complete his education and compete against better basketball talent. At Balboa City, he rose to national prominence and was evaluated as one of the top ranked players in his class by ESPN, Scout, Rivals and several other recruiting services. The McDonald’s All-American Game is an All-Star game for American and Canadian boys and girls highschool basketball graduates. Consisting of the top players, each team plays a single exhibition game after the conclusion of the high-school basketball season, in an East vs. West format. Several Bahamian players have received McDonald’s All-American nominations in the past. However, Higgs was the only Bahamian player to advance to the final stage in the selection process, which begins with hundreds of players nationally in the United States. As part of the annual event, boys also compete in a slam-dunk contest, a three-point shooting competition and an overall timed skills competition. The girls compete in the three-point shooting competition and the overall-skills competition. The boys’ game has been contested annually since 1978, and the girls’ game has been played each year since it was added in 2002.

featuring 284 men and 230 women in 2015. The IAAF opted not to hold a World Relays last year because of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. However, with the World Relays returning this year, Williams said they are looking for a record number of countries and athletes to participate, especially with the inclusion of the mixed relay. “We’re having a men and women 4 x 4 and a mixed 4 x 4,” Williams said. “From the onset, the IAAF has been very adamant in wanting to re-engage track fans.

Tonique Williams, the deputy managing director of the Local Organising Committee, confirmed that the since the inception of the World Relays in 2014 when 276 men and 194 women from 41 member federations competed, the event has grown with 514 athletes from 42 countries,

They want to create events that are exciting and innovative, hence we’ve seen the World Relays come into being. “At the World Relays, we’ve seen how they changed the introduction of the athletes and even the medal presentation. Now the World Relays is introducing the mixed relay this year, which they hope to engage more of the fans and the athletes. World Relays.” The USA dominated the first two editions, winning the inaugural Golden Baton, awarded to the team that accrues the most points, with 60. The following year USA underlined their dominance, taking seven victories and tallying 63 points. Three world records were set in 2014: in the men’s 4x200m by Jamaica and by Kenyan squads in both the men’s and women’s 4x1500m. In 2015, world records were set by US quartets in both the men’s and women’s distance medley relays.

The inaugural World Relays allowed the top eight teams in both the men and women 4 x 100 and 4 x 400m to automatically qualify for the IAAF World Championships in 2015 in Beijing, China. The top eight teams in the two disciplines for men and women automatically qualified for the Olympics last year. It’s not known if the trend will continue with the top teams qualifying for the World Championships in London, England in August. Only the men’s 4 x 400m team was able to qualify for

both the World Championships and the Olympics at the two World Relays. Williams, however, said despite the Bahamas focusing on the 4 x 400m, it should not diminish their plans to field a solid mixed 4 x 4 team. “We now have opportunities to put more people on the track because we can look at athletes that have not made the 4 x 4 team to include in the mixed 4 x 4,” she said. “We’re not a distance programme, we’re more a sprint programme so it gives us more opportunities for our athletes to be involved.”

Dallas can dream on despite a Rodgers masterclass I KNOW most of you are expecting some rant of sorts out of me, due to my Cowboys losing to the Packers on Sunday ... NOT! I must admit it stings a bit, seeing my Cowboys exit this year’s NFL playoffs ahead of schedule. However neither the team nor the fans have anything to be ashamed of, or to hang their heads for. Sunday’s loss to the Packers in the NFC divisional game might have very well been the Super Bowl in mid-January. Easily the game of the year so far in the NFL. After past Cowboy’s playoff losses, I would have been quite disgruntled in the days following, maybe even a little depressed, but for some strange reason I woke up this morning feeling brand new and invigorated, despite the loss. The future is bright in Dallas. Our offence is in great shape, loaded with young talent. A few minor upgrades to our defence and Dallas will have another dynasty on their hands in short order. Dak to the future As I stated in this very column way back in September, Dak Prescott, despite being a fourth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, should be the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys period, due to his youth and high skill set. Since then, Prescott has proven it on and off the field, commanding the locker room, and if his statements in the post-game press conference on Sunday

DAK PRESCOTT should be the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys period, due to his youth and high skill set. (AP) in Dallas are any indicator, it’s further proof how ‘special’ he is (especially for being a ‘rookie.’) Here’s what Prescott had to say following the Cowboys loss: “We don’t give up. We’re not going to stop no matter what the score is, no matter the game. It shows the

true character of this team. It was a great atmosphere. AT&T (Stadium) was amazing today, the fans. It was a great game all the way around. Just hate to be on the losing end, obviously. “But these are the kind of games that I dreamed as a little kid of playing in. I plan to play in many more

of them.” When you hear comments such as those from your quarterback, you know he’s got the ‘it’ factor, and it will be fun watching him put his money where his mouth is moving forward. (I didn’t forget ‘Zeke’ - I’ve got a whole column dedicated to that next week.) The grand master Say what you want about him, Aaron Rodgers is one heck of a quarterback. Rodgers has been playing at a high level, almost un-

conscious for the last eight weeks, just how he likes it. There is no shame in this one for the Cowboys, losing to arguably the best quarterback in the game today (Bradyites slam down The Tribune in unison now.) After coming from 18 points down I might add! So I tip my hat to Rodgers and the Packers: good game, it could have gone either way. It will be fun watching to see if Rodgers can run the board, like he’s done before, on a magical Super

Roosevelt Whylly helps Hurricanes to win By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE midseason winter break is over for Bahamian basketball players and their respective colleges in Canada and as play resumed they look to hold on to their national rankings in the second half. The Holland College Hurricanes, the No.1 ranked team in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, survived their toughest test of the season with a shorthanded bench, but remain undefeated on the season at 9-0. The Hurricanes had been particularly dominant in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA), scoring an average of 97 points per game and outscoring their opponents by nearly 25 points per game, however, they dressed just eight players in their latest outings. Roosevelt Whylly was the only member of Holland’s Bahamian trio (that includes Abel Joseph and Angelo Lockhart) who was in the lineup for the Hurricanes’ 10498 win over the Crandall Chargers and 101-97 win over the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics. Whylly finished with eight points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in just 18 minutes in the win over Crandall. They trailed 27-22 after the first quarter but would rally and take a 5440 lead into the locker room. The ‘Canes would build up an 18-point lead after three quarters.

wood, current England Under-21 caretaker boss Aidy Boothroyd and Oxford United manager Michael Appleton. There were 250 applicants. But the Football Association sees something in White, 42, who began his career with the international teams of the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. But his biggest claim to fame was turning one-time whipping boys Guam, a tiny Pacific island, into one of the AFC’s most improved teams. However, at a time when clubs are being criticsed for not giving jobs to English managers, as a Southampton-born recipient of the FA elite coaching award with 18 years of experience in a variety of challenging environments, White has a strong case, despite the heavyweight competition. In the second game of the weekend, with just seven players suited up for the ‘Canes, Whylly stuffed the stat sheet en route to the win. He finished with 28 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, two assists and one blocked shot. He nearly posted a double double in the first quarter alone with six points and seven rebounds as Holland raced out to a 34-9 lead. Holland led by 24 at the half before losing the third quarter 32-18 and would enter the final quarter with a 75-65 lead. Whylly is averaging 15.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game on 52 per cent shooting from the field, 32 per cent from three and adding three assists per game. Holland looks to stay undefeated and University of New Brunswick Saint Join Seawolves. The Niagara College Knights have moved up to No.5 in the poll bolstered by the stellar play of Van Jutchinson Jr out of the break. Hutchinson was named the Knights’ Athlete of the Week in a dominant win over the Mohawk Mountaineers. He finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals, helping lead the Knights to the 128-109 victory over the reigning Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Western Conference (OCAA) silver medallists. “Van played an outstanding, full, and well-rounded game against Mohawk,” said third year men’s basketball head coach Keith Vassell. “Today was the most effi-

The former Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Porto boss’ career is evidence that starting at such a modest level should be no barrier to success. And, for the confident White, taking on the England Under-21 role would be a logical step in his bold career aim to one day manage his country. When interviewed last October, White - still with Shanghai Shenxin at the time - declared his ultimate ambition. “I’ve got to keep having success wherever I go. That creates a brand as an individual. Then I’d like to try to get into the European game and end up becoming England manager,” he told The Sun newspaper. While his playing career was limited to non-league football at Bognor Regis in England and Fremantle City in Australia, White’s self-belief as a coach can be backed up by a list of impressive achievements. In 2016, White took over at Shenxin, with the club deep in rel-

cient we have been all season we shot the ball extremely well. It was a total team performance. All three Bahamians on the Knights roster scored in double figures. It was easily the best performance of the season for first year forward Kevin Cooper who finished with a season high 17 points. Cooper got out to a quick start with four dunks in the first quarter alone. “I was pleased to see Kevin finish with such a strong showing,” Vassell said. Jordan Wilson also added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. After dropping their season opener, the Knights have won seven games in a row to bring the

semester to a close. It is the first time since the 2001-02 season that a Niagara team has put together as much as a six-game winning streak. Hutchinson is averaging team highs in both points 14.5 and rebounds 8.6 this season. Wilson, the versatile forward, is averaging 7.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Cooper is averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game on 70 percent shooting from the field. The Knights, 7-1 and second in the OCAA will face the Redeemer Royals on January 18. Jackson Jacob and his Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks continued a second half free fall and have lost three of their last four since the calendar flipped to 2017. Two of the losses were in exhibition play, and the Ooks record currently stands at 12-2 in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North division. Jacob continues to be one of the top scorers in the league, but the team previously ranked No.1 in the poll has struggled this season. He posted 27 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in an 85-73 loss to Keyano College. Jacob is among the CCAA leaders in several offensive categories. He is currently the fourth leading scorer at 26 points per game and leads in total points scored with 364. He leads all players in field goals made (144), is fifth in free throws made (47).

Carey said. “It was good having him home and competing against him. But I enjoyed both the 100m free and the 50m free because I beat him in the two of them.” Logan Burrows, representing Swift, won the girls 15-and-over divisional title over her teammate Madison Martinborough. “It was my first meet back in a while due to studying for various exams at school, so I think I did very good,” said Burrows, a 16-year-old 11th grader at Kingsway Academy. And “I didn’t lower my times, but in everything that I did, I pushed myself to do my best. “I enjoyed my 100m fly and my 100m back. I won my heat in both of them, but I didn’t drop my times. I was just surprised that I did as well as I did, winning my heat in both of them.” And in the boys 15-andover division, Dolphin’s Andre Walcott spoiled the return of Dionisio Carey in winning the title. “It was good. I was very tired after my first few events, but I knew I had to finish strong and that was what I did,” said 15-year-old Walcott, a 10th grader at St Augustine’s College. “The competition was fast. I enjoyed my 200IM the most. I did fantastic in that.”

egation trouble in China’s second tier. Drawing on his experience of making the most from limited resources, he steered the club to mid-table safety, without having any money to spend. Despite saving the club from the drop, they did not renew White’s contract. But the Englishman, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence in addition to the FA Elite Pro Licence, should not be out of work for long, having built a solid reputation over the past 18 years. In 2012, White took on the job as head coach of Guam’s international team. He oversaw a dramatic improvement in fortunes as he helped them rise to all-time high of 157 in the FIFA rankings. The US island territory in Micronesia has an estimated population of just over 160,000. But they enjoyed an impressive series of results under White in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. In the second preliminary round, Guam pulled off a memorable victory over India - the world’s second most populous nation. There was also a win over Turkmenistan and

a draw away to Oman. Guam’s form brought White to the attention of many, but he had already demonstrated the ability to bring tangible improvements to small nations. At 24, White took on the role as head coach for the British Virgin Islands in 1998, lifting them from 187 in the FIFA world rankings to 161 in the space of a year. This success was followed by a stint with the Bahamas from 1999 to 2006. While he did not manage immediately to lift the team’s fortunes as dramatically, White did take them to an all-time high of 146 in the rankings in 2006 - a jump of 55 places. While coaching the national team, he also worked as technical director and worked on a number of development programmes. The country was also ranked 16th in CONCACAF. Simultaneously, the senior women were ranked as high as 101 under his watch in 2003. White established an Olympic under-23 squad, a senior women’s team, and men’s and women’s squads at under-20 and under-17 level.

The men notched wins over the higher-ranked Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers, while in the FIFA under-20 World Cup qualifiers the Bahamas drew with the US Virgin Islands and defeated the British Virgin Islands. Other highlights included a 3-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the 2004 Olympic tournament qualifiers. White returned the Bahamas to FIFA certified international competition after a 12-year hiatus and coached and managed 65 matches. White is credited with establishing a resurgence of national team programmes and advocating for an educational campaign to better equip Bahamian coaches. His greatest impact may have come at the developmental level where, under his tutelage, several players reached minor professional league status with clubs in America and Europe. He also designed and implemented a national coaching philosophy as part of the international teams and player development strategy.

Federer returns with a victory, joins Murray in 2nd round By JOHN PYE AP Sports Writer MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Roger Federer shanked a few shots and was unsettled by how nervous he felt after six months on the sidelines, despite the familiar surroundings at the Australian Open. No other man on tour knows the way around a Grand Slam tournament better than Federer, who is playing in his 69th major and has won a record 17. He served 19 aces and had only one double-fault in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win yesterday over fellow 35-year-old Jurgen Melzer, but dropped serve three times and experienced frustrating moments. “I was feeling nervous once the match actually started,” said Federer, who hadn’t played at tour level since Wimbledon after taking time off to let his injured left knee heal. “In the warmup ... I felt fine. Then I hit four frames in a row. It was like, ‘Whew, it’s not as easy as I thought it was going to be.’ “I struggled for a while to find that groove, that rhythm.” Federer had surgery on the knee after a semi-final exit at the last Australian Open and missed the

French Open, ending his streak of 65 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. He returned for Wimbledon, reached the semi-finals, then didn’t play again in 2016. In November, he fell out of the top 10 for the first time in 734 weeks. The 17th-seeded Federer wasn’t the only highly-ranked player to find the going tough Monday. Stan Wawrinka, the US Open champion, was pushed to five sets. So was No. 5-seeded Kei Nishikori. Angelique Kerber, defending champion and ranked No. 1 at a major for the first time, had some nervous moments in her 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over Lesia Tsurenko. Kerber won her first Grand Slam title in Melbourne last year, beating Serena Williams in the final after saving a match point in the first round. After wasting a match point before her serve was broken as Tsurenko rallied to win the second set, Kerber said her mind raced back 12 months. “When I lost the second set, and I had match point, I was thinking about my match last year in the first round,” she said. “First rounds are always tough.” In his first Grand Slam match with the elevated status of having a knighthood and the No. 1 rank-

The five-time finalist comfortably navigated what he hoped was the first step to a drought-breaking Australian Open title. Murray has lost four of the last six finals in Melbourne to six-time champion Novak Djokovic. Gaining the top ranking and receiving the civic honours doesn’t change anything for Murray, who said he faces “the same pressure, same expectations. I’ve never won here — I’m going to try to change that this year.” Wawrinka, who made his Grand Slam breakthrough in Australia in 2014, narrowly scraped past 35th-ranked Martin Klizan 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. In the ninth game of the fifth set, Wawrinka smashed a soft half-volley from Klizan straight back into the Slovakian’s body, clipping the frame and just missing his midsection. He stepped over the net and ensured Klizan was OK, then held serve in that game and broke in the next game to finish it off. Nishikori beat Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Joining him in the second round are 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, 2008 Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 19 John Isner, No. 23 Jack Sock, No.

SWITZERLAND’s Roger Federer wipes the sweat from his face during his first round match yesterday. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila) ing, Andy Murray berated himself when he made mistakes and frequently yelled during a 7-5, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Illya Marchenko. In other words, nothing much has changed.

27 Bernard Tomic, No. 29 Viktor Troicki and No. 31 Sam Querrey. Also, No. 14 Nick Kyrgios returned from his suspension for underperforming in Shanghai last year and raced through a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win over Gastao Elias. No. 16 Lucas Pouille was the highest-ranked of the three men’s seeded players to lose. Five of the women’s seeded players went out, including No. 4 Simona Halep, who lost 6-3, 6-1 to Shelby Rogers in the first match on Rod Laver Arena, and No. 15 Roberta Vinci, who lost to CoCo Vandeweghe. Seven-time major winner Venus Williams beat Kateryna Kozlova 7-6 (5), 7-5, and 2014 Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard continued her recent resurgence by routing Louisa Chirico 6-0, 6-4. Joining them in the next round will be French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig, No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 10 Carla Suarez, No. 11 Elina Svitolina and No. 20 Zhang Shuai. Sixteen-year-old Destanee Aiava became the first player born in this millennium to play in the main draw of a major, but the milestone match ended in a 6-3, 7-6 (4) loss to Mona Barthel.

Belotti shines again but Torino MCILROY WITHDRAWS still can’t defeat AC Milan TURIN, Italy (AP) — Italy forward Andrea Belotti has three goals in three matches against AC Milan this season but his Torino club can’t beat the Rossoneri. Milan came back from two goals down to draw at Torino 2-2 in Serie A yesterday, four days after eliminating the “Granata” from the Italian Cup. Belotti and Marco Benassi put Torino ahead 2-0 at halftime but Andrea Bertolacci and Carlos Bacca responded for Milan. Milan, which has a game in hand, remained fifth, three points behind Lazio, while Torino dropped to ninth, seven points further back. Midway through the first half, Belotti stuck his boot out to redirect in a shot from Adem Ljajic. Belotti also scored when Milan beat Torino 3-2 on the opening weekend of Serie A in August — when he had an injury-time penalty saved by Milan’s teenager goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma — and got the opener in the 2-1 loss at the San Siro last week. Five minutes after Belotti’s goal, Benassi scored with his

Torino had a golden chance to take a 3-0 lead when Antonio Barreca earned a penalty after a foul by Ignazio Abate but Adem Ljajic’s spot kick went directly at Donnarumma in the center of the goal. Just like last week’s match, Torino dominated the first half then ceded control to Milan. Ten minutes after the break, Bertolacci scored his first of the season from close range with the help of goal-line technology. Near the hour mark, Luca Ros-

settini used his arm to push Milan defender Gabriel Paletta to the ground, drawing a penalty that Bacca drilled into the top right corner. It was Bacca’s fourth goal in two league matches against Torino this season, having scored a hat trick during the victory in August. Milan ended with 10 men when Alessio Romagnoli picked up his second yellow for a foul on Belotti in the 89th. Before the match, Milan announced it sold forward Luiz Adriano to Spartak Moscow.

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Abu Dhabi Championship this week because of a rib injury. The European Tour released a statement yesterday saying the second-ranked McIlroy underwent tests after he was injured during the SA Open and they revealed a stress fracture. McIlroy said it was “bitterly disappointing” and “really quite annoying” to miss the tournament, which has the best field of the season on the European Tour. He said “in situations like this, you simply have to listen to the experts.” The Northern Irishman played with the injury for the final three rounds in Johannesburg, where he lost in a playoff to Graeme Storm. The Abu Dhabi Championship starts on Thursday and is headlined by Americans Dustin Johnson and defending champion Rickie Fowler.
