THE TRAVEL CONVENTION

Welcome to The Travel Convention Welcome to The Travel Convention, which this year takes place in Costa Navarino, in the southwest region of the Peloponnese. The stunning surroundings will inspire, and the modern resort provides a perfect setting for business sessions and networking. It has been a challenging year for Greece and its economy, and the story continues to unfold. Tourism is central to Greece’s future prosperity, and Costa Navarino showcases all that makes Greece compelling as a destination – natural beauty, history and hospitality. These qualities will continue to form the foundation of the country’s tourism future, and sustain it as a core destination for the UK market. In our increasingly complex working environment we can control only so much, and even the near future can be unpredictable. The Convention looks at large scale political and economic issues, how they impact the travel industry, and how individual businesses can manage risk in an uncertain world. This year’s business session theme – Risk and Resilience – will address the best ways for us to plan for and to offset risks, ensuring the continued success of the travel industry and your business.

Welcome to Greece Welcome to ABTA’s annual event in our country, here in the Peloponnese, where history and culture are deeply rooted. Despite recent financial developments, Greece has had a remarkable year in terms of tourism with visitor numbers continuing to rise, achieving new records in tourist arrivals compared to last year. Although Greece is a favourite sun and sea holiday destination, there are still undiscovered treasures here, which will delight the most discerning of clients and hosting The Travel Convention gives us a marvellous opportunity to showcase these gems. In the Peloponnese, we have unique cultural, historic and archaeological features, most notably the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae – the first World Heritage Greek site declared from UNESCO – and the birthplace of the Ancient Olympic Games in ancient Olympia. On 21 April next year the Olympic torch will be lit here once again before it makes its way to Brazil. The Peloponnese has 47 sites registered and protected by the Natura 2000 programme for its rare species of wildlife and is host to an amazing variety of scenery, from snowy mountains and wetlands to rocky cliffs and beautiful long sandy beaches. These landscapes are perfect for activity and adventure holidays, and there are numerous walking and cycling trails to enjoy. Earlier this year the new Menalon Trail opened along the Lousios River Gorge, where adrenalin enthusiasts can also enjoy white water rafting and biking. Today the region is one of the biggest wine growing areas in Greece in terms of the number of producers, wineries, varieties and vineyards. We hope you will have the opportunity to sample a few while you are here. Enjoy your stay and I wish you a successful Travel Convention. Elena Kountoura Alternate Minister of Tourism

Welcome to the Peloponnese Welcome to Mythical Peloponnese. Hosting The Travel Convention in Costa Navarino is an exceptional moment for us, as it will give us the opportunity to showcase the competitive advantages that render the Peloponnese one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. Home to the prominent Greek antiquity, Homer’s Epic Tales, Hercules Myths and five UNESCO World Heritage sites; The Peloponnese is also known for its magnificent landscapes, sun-drenched sandy beaches, hidden caves and lakes, trekking paths, traditional villages and ski resorts. It can satisfy the endeavours of every visitor; from sea and sun lovers, adventure seekers, wine and food indulgers to culture enthusiasts and sports fanatics. The Peloponnese is also a booming luxury and wedding destination with a series of quality big-scale investments with areas of integrated tourism development, modern resorts, and luxury hotels underway. We have put together an attractive social programme for you to expand your knowledge about this mythical destination and to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. I wish you all a fruitful and productive event, and I would like to thank you for your participation in The Travel Convention and for your presence here. Mr. Petros Tatoulis Governor of the Region of Peloponnese

In the face of continued uncertainties – economic, geopolitical, political, technological and consumer-led – how do we prepare for and manage change as an industry, at a business level and as individuals? What are the personal impacts of living in the middle of an unfolding story whose end is unknown, and what tactics can we adopt to deal with risk and remain resilient?

Innovation is a key deliverer of growth and competitive advantage and a necessity in today’s fast-changing competitive environment. But it does not always come easily. Increasingly, organisations need to move away from existing business models towards new, more engaging approaches, but how do you foster a culture of innovation within your organisation? How do you take your people with you? Moreover, how do you mitigate risk when developing new ideas? This session will include a presentation by innovation consultancy, Fahrenheit 212, and insight into the methods adopted by two leading travel companies, Expedia and Travelzoo. Moderator: Victoria Bacon, Head of Brand and Business Development, ABTA Speakers: Sandra Steving Villegas, Innovation Director, Fahrenheit 212 Joel Brandon-Bravo, Managing Director, Travelzoo UK Richard Kocher, Director, Sales, Expedia

With the setting for this year’s event being one of the foremost sustainable developments in the Mediterranean, we have a unique opportunity to hear from the resort’s developer, TEMES. They will explain how the grand vision of Captain Vasilis Constantakopoulos’s was born and realised; how it has given Messinia a prominent place on the tourist map, while allowing the people of the area to remain in their homeland; and how tourism can include the local community and environment from the outset. The session will conclude with an audience Q&A. Moderator: Nikki White, Head of Destinations and Sustainability, ABTA Speakers: Marina Papatsoni, Marketing & Business Development Director, TEMES Vasilis Karakousis, Environment & Sustainability Manager, TEMES Natasha Dourala, Vice President of Pylos Association of Enterprises for Tourism Development Chris Wright, Managing Director, Sunvil Holidays Group

THE TRAVEL CONVENTION

Lead Partner What’s new at The Telegraph? THE UK’S NO.1 QUALITY NEWS BRAND NOW GIVES YOU THE CHANCE TO GO BEYOND THE BROCHURE

Telegraph Media Group Limited publishes The Telegraph seven days a week, in print, online and on tablet, and mobile, reaching an audience of over 90 million per month. This is a wholly owned subsidiary of Press Holdings Ltd. Why is The Telegraph attending The Travel Convention? To meet with the movers and shakers of the travel industry, foster even better relations and gain fresh insights into the issues we face and innovations we should adopt.

If The Telegraph had a motto, what would it be? A passport to a better trip.

What is The Telegraph looking forward to at the event? Understanding how global events impact on the travel industry and how data is driving the decisions of a mobile-first generation of travellers. We are also looking forward to meeting with the cream of the travel industry.

With our unrivalled reach, breadth of content and advertising innovation, The Telegraph has always been the perfect partner for the travel industry. Attracting more than four million print readers and 17.8 million digital users every month, The Telegraph now provides exciting new opportunities to follow customers across multiple platforms. Furthermore, following our acquisition of Telegraph Events in 2013, we are delighted to offer brands the opportunity to book seamlessly joined-up media campaigns across print, digital and live events – a UK first. COSTA NAVARINO, GREECE // 12-14 OCTOBER 2015

Headline Partners

2015 represents another significant anniversary for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines as we celebrate a record 11th year of our headline sponsorship of the prestigious Travel Convention, one of the most important and influential events in the travel industry calendar.

Committed to supporting the travel sector.

We would like to thank all of our travel trade partners for their continued support, which has been invaluable in helping us to grow our business over the years. Building strong relationships and working closely with the travel trade remains of great importance to Fred. Olsen, and The Travel Convention is an excellent opportunity for us to meet our key agents and tour operators, and to update you all on our latest developments and to share important feedback.

Opportunities are widespread, with consumers finding themselves with more disposable income than in recent years. But there are still a number of challenges faced by travel businesses. Many – including weather, natural disasters and geopolitical issues – are often out of our control, but have the potential to have a massive impact on your business.

We will be cruising to an impressive 253 ports in 84 countries in 2016/17, and we know that we can rely upon the knowledge, expertise and passion of our agent network to ensure that our key message of ‘Bringing the world closer to you’ is spread far and wide.

www.fredolsencruises.com

NatWest has supported the travel sector for a number of years. This year we’re excited to work even more closely with this sector through our partnership with ABTA, and as proud sponsors of The Travel Convention. Tourism, including the outbound sector, is a huge contributor to the UK economy and plays a critical role in creating jobs and encouraging sustainable growth.

As with many sectors, planning and investment is important. The more prepared you are to face the unexpected, the better placed you are to react to these potential issues. Working with companies that understand your sector will help you navigate the unique environment in which you operate. That’s why we have a dedicated team of leisure relationship managers based throughout the UK who are focussed on looking after the travel and tourism sector. Our team of leisure specialists will work with you to understand your business and help you to reach your ambitions. We’re also working closely with important industry bodies such as ABTA to get a good understanding of the challenges faced by the tourism sector as a whole. For more information about NatWest’s Travel team, please contact Andrew Taylor, Head of Leisure at NatWest on 07920 806044 or andrew.taylor@natwest.com.

Who are we? Trafalgar has more than 70 years of expertise and insider knowledge putting together exceptionally crafted guided holidays around the world, from the USA and Canada, South and Central America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. We reveal the must-see sights, but we also take guests deeper into the real culture of each destination. Created with our network of local connections, our hand-picked Insider Experiences reveal the unique people, places and traditions in every location – whether it’s dining with a local family at their vineyard or farmstead on an exclusive Be My Guest, or discovering history with a stay in one of our carefully selected Authentic Accommodations. And a Travel Director is there every step of the way, sharing insights and taking care of all the little details. This vision has not only pioneered huge change in the industry with the evolution of guided holidays, but it keeps our guests coming back to us time and time again.

Why sponsor The Travel Convention? We see this as a valuable opportunity to build our brand awareness within the cream of the UK travel industry. We have an average guest satisfaction score of 97% on Feefo reviews, which are fully transparent and integrated into our website, yet the UK market is still a relatively small proportion of our business. We see a real opportunity to grow in this market and for more guests from the UK to enjoy some of the insider moments and local encounters we deliver, that transform a simple holiday in to an eye-opening or profoundly touching experience. To do that, we need more engagement with valued travel partners, more brand awareness and more opportunity to tell people who we are, what we do and what makes us different. The Travel Convention is a brilliant opportunity for us to do that.

Travel 2 is a multi award-winning, worldwide trade-only Tour Operator with over 30 years of expertise in providing tailor-made holidays for independent travel agents. Travel 2 offers highly competitive holiday packages to Australasia, Asia, Africa, Europe, Middle East, Indian Ocean, North America, Caribbean and Latin America as well as round the world itineraries. From affordable packages, touring and cruises to exclusive luxury escapes, Travel 2 has it covered. Working with Travel 2 provides agents with a host of benefits and rewards including our lucrative T2 Rewards programme, attractive booking incentives, award-winning online training platform T2 Academy, numerous exciting Fam trip opportunities throughout the year, industry-renowned events, dedicated key account management team and agent-friendly marketing resources. You can follow us for updates on Twitter @T2news or ask your key account manager to invite you to join our exclusive agent-only Facebook group. Have a great Convention and we look forward to meeting you all!
