“And the Mid Suffolk Community Achievement Award goes to…” MAUREEN JOHN – Stradbroke “Maureen was pivotal in the campaign resulting in Stradbroke keeping a library service for its 1,408 residents. Now manager of the library, Maureen has worked tirelessly with others over the past few years to ensure the library remained open when threatened with closure. Joined by Ann Kerr (who has now sadly passed away) Maureen began the fight for the library in 2011. Setting up a Board of Trustees, they worked together and won the fight to keep the library running. As well as saving the library service, Maureen and Ann also worked together to have a Post Office opened in the library following its closure in 2012. In October 2014, the Post Office opened and is believed to be the first Post Office to be located in a library in the UK. Nominated by: Carol Smy “

Community Heroes recognised at awards ceremony Unsung heroes are being honoured at the Mid Suffolk Community Achievement Awards on Thursday 12 March 2015. The awards ceremony, which has been organised by Mid Suffolk District Council with generous sponsorship and prizes provided by the East of England Co-op, will take place at Haughley Park Barns at 6pm. BBC Radio Suffolk presenter, Mark Murphy will be guest of honour and compare the evening. The event will recognise 24 individuals and groups that have given many hours of their time to help the communities in which they live. Cllr Roy Barker, Chairman of Mid Suffolk District Council, who will be presenting the Awards, said: “These awards give us the opportunity to say thank you to an individual or group who deserves recognition and praise for their efforts. I am extremely pleased to be able to meet the people that can make a big difference in their local community and to be celebrating with them. Their vital contribution is an example to us all. Without their selfless dedication, our quality of life would be much diminished”. As part of this year’s ceremony, the Council have been working with media students from Suffolk One to produce a short film on all winners, which will be shown at the awards ceremony. The film highlights the work that individuals and groups have done and also features the nominator explaining why they felt an award should be given. The Purpose Many organisations have a Mission or Purpose statement, just a precise statement of few words to inform the public and often more importantly to continually remind the staff of the purpose for the business’s existence. For example in 1990 the Wal-Mart Corporation announced their plan: ‘To become a $125 billion company by 2000’. And 3M who gave us the ‘Post-it’ note define their reason for existing: ‘To solve unsolved problems innovatively’. Equally the Christian Church has a Mission or Purpose statement which we at Stradbroke Baptist have defined as: ‘We exist to worship God and serve the community’ We worship God through our Sunday services but equally as we serve and help other people we are honouring God the creator of us all. One way in which we help is to support a number of charitable organisations and individuals. We invite you to ‘Help us help others’ through the work of the Christian charity Tools With A Mission. TOOLS WITH A MISSION Providing a hand up -- Rather than a hand out. Tools With A Mission enables people to earn a living and to support themselves. In many countries people have few skills, little education and no means of earning a living. A switch from aid dependency to self-sufficiency is impossible without help. TWAM started some thirty years ago, and has since then given help by collecting and refurbishing tools and equipment no longer required in the UK and sending them overseas. In a typical year, over 400 separate organisations, serving 1,000s of trainees and budding entrepreneurs benefit from some 200 tonnes of aid, which is shipped from TWAM’s warehouse in Ipswich. The value of these tools is in the order of £1m. Can you help — These are the tools needed: All types of hand tools: Carpentry, Motor mechanics, Builders, Electricians, Plumbers, Engineering, Lathes, Bench & band saws , Electric power tools, Sewing machines, Knitting machines (complete), Laptops, Flat screen computers Sewing and craft items Sledge hammers, Pick axes, Garden forks, Spades hoes, rakes, Educational text books, Mountain & mens bicyles (not lightweight racing type), Motor lawnmowers, Strimmers, Chainsaws Manual typewriters. Contact TWAM: www.twam.co.uk phone Ipswich 01473 210220 Or call John 388751 who will be happy to collect from your home and deliver to Ipswich. A Message from Rev Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, Women’s World Day of Prayer 2 options to join this annual day celebrated across the country & prepared this year by the women of the Bahamas; 11 am at Metfield church, followed by soup and bread or 2.30 pm at Horham Baptist church. If anyone would like a lift to Metfield service, call Jennifer, 384069 God Bless , Susan A message from Revd Canon Andrew Vessey, During the course of this month there are three major Saint's days: St David, St Patrick and St Joseph. There will be all manner of other celebrations and challenges given within this month's pattern for the churches to keep, in order that they and our society they serve, should become more aware of the finest human qualities. This in turn amounts to the reality of God's presence among us. We have the Women's World Day of Prayer, our keeping of Mothering Sunday (which is not the same as Mother's Day!). The month ends with the most sacred of all weeks, historically known as Holy Week, leading us in reflection and prayer to Easter Day itself. There is a rhythm here and one we all do well to try and copy in our own lives. There are times when, like St David, we need to speak out. David became a great preacher but all of us are required to speak up at times for that we believe to be true. There are times when, like St Patrick, we are challenged to face a difficulty, to do something we don't particularly like doing! Patrick went back to Ireland, to where he had been a slave, but this time as a compassionate freeman; facing his enemies with the love of Christ. There are times when, like St Joseph, we have to believe our loved ones, become the support they need, take a back seat perhaps so that something more wonderful can unfold itself, someone more important than ourselves can grow and become fulfilled. During Holy week and on Easter Day we seek to feel the glory of God's Son irrepressibly close and yet also always ahead in those challenges which face us. May we each see Him and, whichever way we are forced to face at times, come to understand Him more fully. All May God bless you, Andrew Vessey

Life in the Legion Lt.Col. Giles Stibbe was the speaker at the February meeting held at Laxfield King’s Head, his subject being “The Battle-Back Centres”. He is Commander of the London Central Garrison. His talk was of great interest and, on behalf of the seventeen members and guests present, Paul Smiddy gave the usual vote of thanks. Bernard Mills gave his monthly treasurer’s report, and Joyce Cooper, our Welfare Officer, spoke about her recent cases. The Annual Dinner is to be held at midday at Stradbroke Community Centre on Friday, March 27th, for which all members will now have received a letter regarding details, the main guest speaker being Dr Patrick Thomson BA, B.Sc., M.Sc, Ph.D., MRSH. The next meeting is on Thursday, March 12th, at 11.30 am. The speaker is Ian Taylor from North Elmham, Norfolk, on “The Royal British Legion Bikers”. Members, please come along if you are able to. The total to date of the Stradbroke & Wilby Poppy Appeal is £3,318.38. Our thanks to everybody for their continued support. Michael Burton, Chairman.

W.I. 12th February 1925 -------Onwards and upwards It was smiles all around as we gathered for our February Meeting, as for us it was a rather special one. It was the official anniversary of the founding of Stradbroke W.I. 90 years ago, even coinciding with the actual date and day. Cause for a second celebration, (the main one being held last December) with more Bucks Fizz and birthday cake. We were delighted that Andrea Davies our W.I. Advisor was able to join us for this very special evening. President Dorothy Readman warmly welcomed members, our guest Andrea Davies, and our visitors Jackie, Julie and Patricia. As the business which was brief got underway, we were delighted to hear that Betty had been a winner in the Federation 200 Club. Members were asked to endorse plans to send a donation to our 2015 Charity ‘The Air Ambulance’ and also to give a Bursary to a member who wishes to take a course to further their knowledge or craft. The lucky winner will be decided by a ballot. Members were also reminded that there would be a Food Bank Collection at our March Meeting. At Dorothy’s invitation, Andrea gave a short address, firstly congratulating us on our 90th Anniversary, and wishing us every success in the coming years. She was very generous in her praise for us, and in particular for June Hampson our programme planner, for the very varied and interesting programme she had created for both last year and the current one. 2016 is looking good too. Take a bow June! We say cheese when we smile, and we really did smile and laughed a lot as Jason Salisbury from ‘Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses’ took to the floor and gave us a most entertaining and absorbing account of his life as a herdsman (a somewhat see-saw life). A man who loved his cows and his work, who had encountered hard times losing both his job and home, all due to pressures in the Milk Marketing Industry. With sheer tenacity he fought back, and with the aid of his very loyal wife, and the passage of time, now Owns and runs ‘Suffolk Farm Cheeses’ and produces 28 tonnes of cheese a year. Cheese that is sold nationwide, and enjoyed in famous hotels as far afield as Hong Kong. Having heard all about the cheese we were then invited to try some. The mice didn’t get a look in! Prue thanked Jason on our behalf for an engaging talk. The cheese consumed, we then moved on to birthday cake, Bucks Fizz, coffee and tea. Finally a hearty chorus of Happy Birthday was sung, followed by what else? Jerusalem. We all agreed that it had been a most happy, enjoyable, and memorable evening. Come and hear Mark Mitchels superb talk on ‘Elizabeth Garrett Anderson’ on 12th March at 7.30pm. Everyone Welcome Non- members £3.00 Gill Bird.

Community service: The Adventurer Scout Troop have recently spent a couple of evenings at the Parish Church learning about the workings of an Anglican Church, thank you to Revd Rosemary Willis and the team at St Peter and St Paul’s for their help. Adventurers had a trail around the church and an information talk followed by ringing of the Church bells! The second evening was spent broom and duster in hand cleaning our beautiful church. Cubs reach new heights: Members of 1st Fressingfield Cub packs recently attended cimbing session at Stowmarket. Great time was had by all. Thanks Chris Carman-Jones (CSL) and the team for arranging the visit. Explorers enter the fast lane: Over the next month members of the Explorer Scout Unit will be entering the fast lane of life. On Friday 27th February we will once again be travelling to Anglia Karting in Ipswich for an evening on the go-kart track. While on the 31st March we will be taking to the skies as we attend a day of gliding at the Rattlesden Gliding Club. http://ratair.org.uk/ GROUP CAMP 2015: We will again be holding our Group Camp at Thorpe Woodlands near Thetford. The dates are 22-24th May and we are expecting around 100 members of the Scout Group to attend. The Leaders are currently working on a new programme and we will be sending out camp information/booking forms soon. Beavers learn of personal safety: Our Beaver Colony have been learning all about personal safety this term – with first aid sessions and an exciting visit from the local PCSO (pictured) who talk about personal safety and stranger danger. Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne.

Friends of All Saints Church Thank you very much for supporting the Supper and the Auction. We raised just over £2,300, which was a wonderful result. All we need to hear now is that we have been successful with our Grant Application to LPOW fund. We are planning the Annual Church Path Plant Sale on Saturday, 2nd May, at 10.30 am onwards. (Don’t forget us when you are dividing plants and pricking out seedlings caroldon01@gmail.com), a Concert by “Morning Chorus” in the Church on Sunday, 21st June and a Tea Party on Church House Meadow on Saturday, 22nd August. To celebrate all that's good about Stradbroke, FOASS invite you to contribute to the creation of the next Stradbroke Calendar to be published for 2016. Photos illustrating the best of Stradbroke will be published online each month and, towards the end of this year, there will be an opportunity to vote for your favourites. The top 12 will form the main images for the calendar. If you think you have photographs of something that shows what’s good about Stradbroke, then why not submit them to Photos@Stradbrokeonline.org.uk The calendar will be printed towards the end of 2015, and available for sale from November. All proceeds will be donated to the restoration fund for All Saints Church, Stradbroke. Stradbroke Archive and Records Association-SARA What a lovely Sunday we had in the Court House on the 22nd of February - lots of visitors came to look through the archive and share memories and items for putting in to the archive. It has to be said, the refreshments were also very popular and a number of Sunday morning library users also popped in for quick cup of tea and a browse! Archive Sunday is open to everyone who wants to contribute to or find out more from the Archive. We are on hand to take copies of anything you may wish to add to the archive (copies not originals - we ‘copy not keep’!) and we can copy photos and documents, etc. using a scanner and can copy files using computers. We also have the facility to copy VHS home videos for the archive by arrangement. So dig out your camcorder footage of all those past Stradbroke events! We can make appointments at any Archive Sunday event or via the Archive website - go to www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk and click on ‘Contact Us’. Other opportunities on Archive Sunday included offering an introduction to the online services available through Suffolk Libraries that may interest local historians and genealogical researchers, such as British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry.co.uk Library edition. A number of villagers came to find out about their ancestors and one villager was amazed to look back on Ancestry to find out who had previously lived in his house! All we can say is it raised an eyebrow…! From April we will be holding monthly Archive ‘get togethers’ at the Court House - put the last Sunday morning of each month in your diary now! There will not be a March meeting due to the Court House Brunch, but we will continue in April on 26th April 2015 - 10am to 2pm. See you then! Ann Readman

Wingfield and District Gardening Club In January, we visited our “Gardens in Winter”. The first was at “The Old Swan” at Wilby where a beautiful garden has been created from scratch. The terrace had delightful plants and is bordered on one side by a round pond. Via a Lavender lined path, one reaches a group of Birch trees and a half moon shaped seating area, all giving the impression of a much larger space. On the right are beautiful long borders, on the left, behind climbing roses, a delightful long seat and a long pool. Our second, a large garden was very different with huge island beds containing many beautiful shrubs and roses, some of which had been trained on large supports to provide height and focus. At the far end were fruit and other trees to give privacy. A very neat and organised vegetable garden on the right and out of sight of the main garden is surveyed by an enchanting “Summer house” and greenhouse. A fabulous garden which will provide much more delight in summer to which we look forward. Nick Cook of Barton Grange will be giving a talk at Brundish Village Hall on “A Wild Flower Meadow” on March 26th at 7.30pm Caroline Traylen

Director: Morten Tyldum - Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Charles Dance, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Tuppence Middleton, Allen Leech, Tom Goodman-Hill, Rory Kinnear, Steven Waddington. During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptoanalyst and war hero Alan Turing to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency', an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offence of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, this film follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives. “Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine”. Not only did Turing help save the world, he continues to influence it every day. A wellmade, well-acted, thought-provoking film. Margaret Streeter, 384869 m.streeter@btinternet.com

Stradbroke Church Village Show The Annual Flower, Vegetable and Produce Show will be held on Saturday 25th July 2015. There will be the usual classes, including classes for Allotment Holders. Also there will be classes for the Stradbroke Primary and Nursery School, kindly sponsored by STM Photographics of Stradbroke (01379 388667). Please contact Roly on 01379 384839 or Mary on 384642. Schedules will be available in March. Festifull 2015 News - 28th & 29th June Plans for this year’s Festifull are progressing well and most acts for the arena have confirmed and we also see the return of the ever popular Dog Show. Bringing the Market under the cover of 3 large marquees proved to be a wise move last year and given the unpredictability of British weather we plan to do the same this time. Bookings are now being taken for stalls on both days and we encourage all clubs and societies to book now as we have only limited space and last year we sold out very quickly. We welcome and encourage new volunteers to help on the committee or just with the setting up and taking down of everything. If you have a particular skill e.g. musician, juggler etc and would like to entertain us in the arena don’t be shy and do let us know. Please contact Nigel Brown for bookings T: 07771 838957 E: nigelbrown01@btinternet.com For any other enquiries or to volunteer speak with any member of the committee. Roger Turkington

Stradbroke Primary School A busy half term since Christmas has seen children preparing for several events including a Be Bright, Be Seen Day organised by our Junior Road Safety Officers. An assembly to highlight the importance of staying safe on our streets was presented, followed by road safety playtime activities and games. Children took part in a competition to dress a brightly coloured hedgehog and Susie the Bear visited the school. We are again aiming to go for a gold award this year following our success last summer. Class 3 spent an amazing day at the High School in the DT department designing and constructing a Parthenon model, all children created pillars and the tiled roof, learning much about the history and uses of the original building. We have had an array of visitors to lead our assemblies, including our Open the Book team, who have told stories of creation and others from the Bible. Children have loved taking part in them and linking them to our school values. In February over 100 participants took part in a Sign to Sing Record event, when voices and signing came together to 'Join hands today'. This is the 4th year we have participated in this event organised by Sign Health. Our final event of the half term was the third stage of our 150th Birthday Celebrations. This looked at the 1920s and included songs and brass pieces from the First World War and dancing to the Charleston! All children took part in workshops to help create their costumes and to learn the dance steps. The afternoon was a marvellous display of musical, artistic and vocal talents which parents, families and friends enjoyed! Our next event is a whole school evacuation day on the Poppy Line in April, which will be an exciting and educational trip for all. Wednesday 8th July is a date for your diaries, when we will be holding an open evening for past pupils, staff, governors and members of the community, so watch this space for further information. We would love to hear from anyone who has photographs, information or stories relating to the history of our school and would like to see as many of you as possible visit our school. Mrs L Walsh, Head of School

First performed in 2011, this is another opportunity to hear this item which was written by local composer Bernard Butler, a member of the Benefice choir. Everyone is invited to come and listen to this concert of appropriate music for Holy Week. Entrance is free, and there will be a retiring collection. Bernard Butler

New Kissing Gates At Wootten Green there had always been two difficult stiles, one very high, which gave access to the Wilby Road from Horseshoe Farm. They were necessary because the meadow was often the home for several horses. They have now been replaced by two metal 'Kissing Gates' which are much easier to use and which can still keep the field secure for horses. Do try them out! The gates were donated by Suffolk County Council and the work of installing them done by members of the Stradbroke Charitable Trust. Gerald Jenkins

Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund Generous shoppers turn ‘Pennies’ into pounds Generous shoppers have given an ongoing drive to develop an innovative centre for people with life-limiting illnesses a massive boost after donating nearly £5,000 to the campaign via a digital charity box. During October and November, customers at Adnams Cellar & Kitchen Stores were given the chance to round up their purchases and donate their change to Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF). The initiative, called ‘Pennies’, raised a fantastic total of £4775.99. The money will be ploughed into an ongoing campaign to raise £714,000 to build a new Information and Support Centre (ISC) for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in north east Suffolk and south Norfolk. The centre aims to bring a full range of holistic services closer to home, including benefits advice, wig-fitting, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. Pennies is administered by a national charity, called the Pennies Foundation, which has already raised well over £3.5m for good causes with its innovative digital charity box scheme. For more information about the ISC project, or to make a donation, visit www.halesworthhealth.org/information-and-support-centre Liz Hearnshaw

Are you worried about housing? SNAP may be able to help...... SNAP is a government funded organisation that can assist you if you find yourself in housing difficulties, are facing eviction or repossession. SNAP, established since 2008, offers free housing advice, support and guidance to those worried that they may lose their home or are already homeless. Supporting over 540 people at any one time, the only conditions are that you must have a housing need, be able to access public funds, live in Suffolk and be aged 16 or over. SNAP is committed to helping people in Suffolk to maintain their homes and live independently. SNAP is made up of 6 six charitable organisations, Orwell Housing Association, Anglia Care Trust, Ipswich Housing Action Group, Centra, Together for Wellbeing and Family Action. The consortium employs dedicated housing related support workers who work with service users in their own homes, offer telephone support and run drop-ins throughout the Babergh, Mid Suffolk, Suffolk Coastal, St Edmundsbury, Ipswich and Forest Heath districts of Suffolk. SNAP is able to assist those who have housing issues, for whatever reason, by working with them to address rent or mortgage arrears and debts, to apply for social housing or look at alternative housing options. Support workers are trained to liaise with landlords and local authorities in order to claim discretionary housing payments and backdated housing benefit if clients are eligible for these. SNAP workers can also provide support with form filling, help set up utilities, maximise income, advise on applicable benefits and offer budgeting and debt guidance. SNAP has had great success in helping service users to avoid eviction and can also signpost those with additional needs, for example mental health issues, severe debts, physical or sensory disabilities and learning disabilities to appropriate organisations who, in many cases, work alongside SNAP to offer a holistic approach. If you, or anyone you know, is experiencing difficulties with their housing they can get in touch with SNAP via the referrals team, CARA, on 01473 467727. Everyone who applies will be offered advice on their housing issues and those deemed eligible for further assistance will receive an assessment in their own home, followed by short term telephone or face to face support, in order to address their housing needs. Stradbroke Cricket Club It is difficult to imagine that the cricket season is only seven weeks away, but this is England. The seasons can change overnight. Further evidence of the onset of “Summer” is Nat West Cricket Force Day on Sunday 29th March, 10 am to 1pm. As many members & volunteers as possible are requested to give a little time to help cut grass, roll the pitch, erect the nets, painting, tidying the shed & scorebox, and this year, putting some chicken wire along the hedge to keep the ball on the Playing Field. In return, you get a stylish T Shirt & a nutritious bacon roll. We are indebted to Jewsons for their continuing sponsorship of this initiative. Meanwhile, the Club still needs to raise funds to survive. Thanks to everyone who supported the Pop Music Quiz in February, which raised £350. Our major fundraiser, Annual Horse Race Night is on Saturday 11th April at the Community Centre. It is the 15th year of Race Night, so the Anniversary will be celebrated accordingly. (more next month). One event that did not take place was Turbo 10 cricket at the High School, due to a series of unfortunate occurrences. Fingers crossed, it will now take place in April. The Club is always on the lookout for new players of any age, particularly younger ones. Indoor training continues until Easter at Stradbroke High School on Mondays & Tuesdays (boys), and Sunday afternoons at Hartismere High School (girls). Keep supporting your local Cricket Club. Stradbroke Badminton Club I hope everyone had an excellent Christmas and New Year! I apologise for missing the last Stradbroke Monthly, so there are a few results to report on. Ipswich & District League. W Drakes A 3 - 6 Stradbroke W Framlingham 0.5 - 8.5 Stradbroke W Stradbroke 8 - 1 Drakes A L Stradbroke 4 - 5 Hadleigh A W Kesgrave B 2 - 7 Stradbroke Unfortunately it's not looking great for our hopes of promotion this year as we have lost a couple of games that I'm sure we all feel we should have done much better in. There is still a slim possibility of finishing in the top two if one of the other title contenders slips up, so all hope is not lost yet. Aldeburgh League. The B team have only played one game and unfortunately lost 5 - 1 to Felixstowe at home. Most of the games in the Aldeburgh League are played towards the end of the season, so still a long way to go as yet. George Chaplin.

You may have seen a strange metallic structure on the allotments. Fear not, it is not some extravagant sculpture, it is merely the beginning of our polytunnel. If you are a regular walker around the allotment site, over the coming weeks you will see its gradual formation. Hopefully a bit of warmer weather is on the horizon so we can stretch the plastic over the frame. Many thanks to Peter Smith and Gerald Jenkins who contributed towards this much need structure with a donation from Gerald’s recent talk in the Community Centre. Not much else is happening up the allotments. I keep looking for spring growth, but not much has changed. If you look closely, you may see a few crocus and snowdrops braving the weather, but everything else is waiting. Only the brave winter crops of cabbage, leeks, parsnips, carrots and sprouts are holding their own. I rarely have to buy vegetables, only potatoes that ran out before Christmas (must grow more). I rarely see any allotmenteers either. And like me, they scurry about, gather their crops and dash home. Once again I seem to be behind with my digging. But I take consolation that this year, everyone seems to be behind. Over the coming couple of months the allotments will once again become a hive of activity. Digging, hoeing, sowing, planting, weeding, weeding and weeding. (Did I mention weeding?) Don’t be in a hurry to sow until the soil has warmed up a bit. A later sowing tends to catch up with earlier sowings without rotting in cold soil and wasting the seed. Keep an eye on the date on the seed packet as well. Some seeds do not keep, such as parsnip. Even though carrots are supposed to keep for a couple of years, I have poor success with last years seed packet. We are having a cake and plant stall on April 18th halfway between Spar and the Wilby road from 9am to 11.30am or when we run out, and our AGM will be on Tuesday 21st April at 7pm in the library. If you are interested in getting involved, do please come along. We have a few plots available from a whole plot to a quarter plot. Please email me if you would like more information. helenpleasance@talk21.com Helen Pleasance

East Anglian Air Ambulance Are you looking for a new challenge this year? Why not volunteer to help local charity East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and play a part in continuing our lifesaving work. EAAA is a 365 day-a-year lifesaving helicopter emergency medical service working across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Since the charity began 15 years ago, we have attended over 16,000 missions. In 2015, EAAA are looking to recruit more volunteers across the region. EAAA will be marking 15 years of service with events throughout the region, including ‘Tea at 15:00’ on May 15 at locations all over East Anglia. EAAA could not exist without our team of over 200 committed volunteers. We are hugely proud of all our volunteers and enormously grateful for the time that they have given. As a volunteer you play a vital role in helping us to keep our two helicopters flying 365 days a year across East Anglia. Our volunteers choose the time that they can give to us, whether it is on a weekly basis or occasionally helping out at events. Every hour of time given to us makes a huge difference. There are plenty of opportunities, from organising events, to helping us for a few hours at one of our events across East Anglia. You could even spend your time volunteering behind the scenes at one of our seven offices, with anything from operations to communications. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in 2015, visit our website http://www.eaaa.org.uk/support-us/volunteer/becoming-a-volunteer/ or contact your local area Fundraising Manager. Recently, I was delighted to be invited to Thames Ambulance Service in Westerfield to see at first hand, the kind of opportunities which are now available to help people into work. The Thames Ambulance Service is part of a new scheme involving the Job Centre and a training company called The Light Bulb, which helps unemployed people back into work via six weeks of training and work experience. This is real “joined up thinking at its best. Job Centre Plus identifies potential recruits and recommends them to The Light Blub. Here the candidates complete a two week pre-employment training programme which includes literacy, numeracy and Level 2 NVQ Health and Social Care. These are a valuable set of transferable skills which will help with future employment prospects. The final part of the process is provided by Thames Ambulance Service who give first class work experience and training. This leaves the students in a position to participate in the selection process to become a trainee ambulance care assistant with Thames. Even those students who do not progress into a career with the Thames Ambulance Service, have been given invaluable training and skills in the health and care sector, providing them with opportunities to enter further healthcare training and job opportunities. Since August 2014 the Thames scheme has seen 12 students secure employment with Thames Ambulance Service. I was extremely impressed with the work of Light Bulb and the Thames Ambulance service and found the dedication and enthusiasm of both the staff and students a real inspiration. As a doctor, I know that there is nothing more rewarding than being able to help someone who unwell, and I was delighted to be invited to congratulate the latest group of graduates and present their awards. Schemes such as this show how our economy is recovering, and offer important opportunities to people here in Suffolk to get on in life and provide a safe and secure future for their children and grandchildren. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems.
