P. Langford START TUESDAY 17th FEBRUARY -- THE ALPHA COURSE ALPHA is an opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal environment. Details John 388751 Jack doesn’t listen. Much of Jack’s life was spent attending to his ‘pride and joy’, the immaculate front lawn and borders. Jack saw the approaching Baptist Parson and saw his opportunity to cause a stir, as he called out. “I would ban all you folk, your religions are the cause of all the problems in the world, a few years ago it was Ireland, now Iraq, all these wars caused by religion, I’d ban the whole lot”. The Pastor took a deep breath, ready to give a reasoned response, but Jack speedily butted in, and walked away saying. “Can’t stand here all day, I’ve got work to do”. Jack’s views are not uncommon, and like Jack there is often an unwillingness to consider any other viewpoint. At first glance there is some credence in Jack’s assertion for many conflicts are described in the media as being a result of differing beliefs and practices. But on closer investigation we often find differences of race, culture and often historical disagreements are the root cause of conflict. But, looking from a different perspective the situation proves that we humans are wired up, created to believe in something, we are more than just flesh, bones and a brain. For from ancient times man has had a need to look beyond himself to a supreme being, a creator God, or man has worshipped the sun, trees etc, or felt the need to made idols of wood or stone to worship. We all have a belief, even Jack, equally the atheist who denies God’s existence has a belief system. We should not be surprised by this human need and capacity to believe, for the Bible tells us that God has placed eternity (life beyond the present) in human hearts. We are made with a capacity to search and find something to believe in, it’s normal, just a part of who we are as human beings. If we conclude that belief is part of being human we need to take it seriously and to consider options. The ALPHA course gives the opportunity to explore these ideas in a friendly non-confrontational way. Alpha details contact John 388751. And finally. It’s possible that you have heard that the Baptist Church has recently sold the bungalow it owned in the village. This sale is part of a larger plan which includes buying a more modern property and if possible employing a part time Pastor/ Church Leader. At present the sale is complete and we expect to complete our purchase within the next few days, but the Church appointment is not expected until the autumn. We have therefore a two bedroom house available to let for the next six months. Anyone interested in a short term tenancy is invited to get in contact. For further details please contact: John 388751, Jackie 384112

A Message from Rev Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, February can be a very cold month so I hope you are keeping warm. I am going on a pilgrimage to Israel this month and it should be warmer but I think I will still need a coat! A pilgrimage is about taking a purposeful journey to a shrine or sacred place and taking time to contemplate and ponder along the way. Life is so full of noise and things to do, so I am looking forward to some quiet reflection. February is a month when we often think about different kinds of love; there is the romantic love of Valentine’s Day, the love of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and the love of God as we enter into Lent beginning with Ash Wednesday. This year we are at Hoxne church at 7.30pm, where the service will include the traditional ‘ashing’. This is when the ashes of last year’s palm crosses are mixed with oil and the sign of the cross is marked upon our foreheads whilst the priest says, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.” Lent is a time to take stock of who we are and what we are doing; it is a time to consider soberly what is important in life and what should be a lessor priority. God gives us this great opportunity to change the way we live, he offers us new life for old and Easter is a great time of year to make that change. This year’s confirmations will take place on Easter Saturday in Bury cathedral during another traditional service when the new Pascal candle that represents Christ is lit from a brazier outside the building. If you were christened as a baby and would like to be confirmed please speak to me, it is a good way of making a new start with God. Whatever you choose to do this Lent, I pray that you will know God’s blessing on you and those whom you love. God bless, Susan

Stradbroke Parish Council

The Parish Pump!

MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL 12 January 2015 6 members of the public attended the meeting. PUBLIC FORUM: no items were brought to the attention of the Council at this time.

Next meeting of the Parish Council Monday 9th February 2015 at 7.30pm in the Community Centre

The minutes of the December meeting were approved and signed. Accounts for payment were agreed and the cheques signed. The Council had previously agreed to change its banking arrangements and the new account with Unity Trust Bank was operational. The budget for 2015/16 was agreed and the precept set at £29,967 (unchanged from last year) PLANNING (for reasons of economy of space the details have been truncated; further details can be obtained from the Clerk): There were no applications for consideration Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the PC last met: Planning permission granted for: 3506/14 oak to be felled because of its decayed condition Land off Queens Street There were no other Planning Matters OTHER BUSINESS: MSDC COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: the Council was pleased to congratulate Maureen John who was a clear winner of this year’s award. This was well-deserved recognition of her tireless efforts to keep Stradbroke Library viable and growing and also for continuing the battle to have a Post Office service in the village. Well done, Maureen! LIBRARY & COURTHOUSE: The Post Office has been busy. As promised, the opening hours would be reviewed and a consultation was available for completion. Please give a few moments of your time to do this as the results will show what the customers need from this service. Do speak to Maureen if you have any questions. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: the Housing Needs Survey had been submitted and evaluation was the next step. Pressure of work at Community Action Suffolk meant the results would not be available for several weeks. The Qualitative analysis had been undertaken and gave more direction to the way the Neighbourhood Plan would be formulated. Volunteers were still very much needed to help with the work streams that were the bedrock of the Plan. If you wish to help please contact the Clerk or any Councillor. POLICE REPORT: there had been four crimes since the last meeting...1 x burglary of a dwelling; 1 x criminal damage; 2 x theft. PCSO Martin had given a list of the top ten things a burglar will look for when assessing a house as a possible target. Some were obvious such as locking doors and windows not leaving spare keys outside (ask a neighbour to hold them for you) but others were less so...small, expensive items are more desirable than huge TVs. The next tasking meeting will be held at Thorndon Village Hall on 27 April 2015 at 7.30pm. STREET LIGHTING: some lights appeared to be still on at 3am. CONTACT NUMBERS: If there is an emergency continue to dial 999 but if you just wish to report an incident or seek advice please use 101. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum, which takes place prior to the start of every meeting. Minutes of the meetings are held in the Library and are now posted on the Notice Board The February Meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Community Centre at 7.30pm on Monday, 09 February 2015 Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 07817 441195 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com New address: Manfield House, 7 Norwich Road, Ditchingham, Suffolk, NR35 2JJ **please make non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only**

Life in the Legion My report starts on a sad note with the death of branch Committee Member Simon Crowe from Flixton. We were represented at St. Mary’s Church for his funeral, just before Christmas; he will be very much missed at our events. The Annual County Conference was held at Needham Market in January and attended by the officers and by Standard Bearer Joyce Cooper. Bernard Mills was our delegate and 25 branch delegates attended with thirteen standards on parade. The new County Vice-Chairman is Ken Rowbottom from Fressingfield, and the main guest speaker was the National Vice-Chairman, Terry Whittlers from Yorkshire. The speaker at our next meeting on Thursday, February 12th will be Lt Col Giles Stibbe, on “The Battle Back Centres” It will be held as usual at Laxfield King’s Head, starting at 11.30 am. Members, please attend if you are able to. Finally, a belated “Happy New Year” to all readers. Michael Burton, Branch Chairman. Thank you message received after the RBL Christmas Gift Concert: Ladies and Gentlemen of The Royal British Legion, Just a little note to say Thank You for thinking of us wives at Christmas time. The presents were very thoughtful and made us feel appreciated, as well as our Husbands. Thank you once again. The Wives at Wattisham Childcare Centre

W.I. It was Gala Night on the 18th December, and for us it was a double celebration. We were celebrating Stradbroke W.I. 90th Anniversary, together with our Christmas Dinner. It was Party Night! To celebrate our 90 years, Dorothy and Sue Gray had compiled memorabilia of Stradbroke which they displayed for everyone to enjoy. We were delighted to welcome Jane Collier our Federation Chairman and Gillian Slaughter from the Federation Executive as our special guests for the evening, and together with members and their guests, they entered a Community Centre that had been transformed into a festive party scene. Balloons and crackers adorned the tables in the themed colours of purple, pink and silver. Candelabras of flowers and balloons, beautifully arranged by Dianne, and trees of frosted tortured Hazel fronted the curtains. The stage was decked with swags of spruce and more balloons, and of course a Christmas tree. It all looked lovely. There was truly a Gala Raffle, with superb prizes of champagne, £25.00 M&S voucher, a beautiful basket of wine and cheese and another of fruit, a large box of chocolates and to top it all a bottle of red wine. Taking pride of place in the room was our Birthday Cake, which was absolutely delicious, and for which we have to give a huge thank you to Moyra for making it for us. A superb three course dinner was served by Steve Hambling and his staff, after which our President Dorothy Readman gave a short address before making the Annual Awards. Moyra and Jane Collier were then invited to cut the cake, and Jane proposed the toast to Stradbroke W.I. The cake was enjoyed amidst a popping of corks and lots of bubbly. Songs from the 1920s, 30s and 40s were sung accompanied by Dougie on his keyboard, and from the 50s onwards by music compiled by John Dowsett. Allan Hampson spoke for everyone when he warmly thanked Steve and his catering staff for serving such a delicious meal. As the evening drew to its conclusion all the balloons on the stage were simultaneously burst, so we really did go out with a bang. Special thanks to the committee for all their hard work and to Don, Dougie, Jeff and Michael, the dedicated husbands whose help we value so much. Finally, a huge thank-you to all those of you who helped with the clearing up in the Community Centre. January 2015 The start of another year and a busy one in prospect. Moyra opened the meeting by giving a very generous thank you to the committee for all their hard work in arranging the very successful Gala dinner. Dorothy then welcomed everyone with a New Year Greeting and we got underway with the business. Dianne pressed home the point, that at the end of this year The President, Secretary and the Treasurer, would be retiring from the committee, and that without members coming forward to stand for committee and fill these rolls, there would be no more W.I. Members were invited to shadow officers to acquaint themselves with procedures if it would help them make the decision to come forward. In February we will be having a table top sale of new unwanted items, so remember to bring them along to the meeting. A letter from Dougie was read, in which he thanked everyone for his gift. This being our 90th year Dorothy gave a short resume of the founding of Stradbroke W.I. which we celebrated with a Gala dinner in December. However our next meeting actually coincides with the very date, the 12th February our founding documents were signed. To mark the event Dorothy has suggested a short walk on this date to visit the Three White Birch Trees we donated to the village as a memento of the occasion. The walk will commence at 10.30 am from outside the Church. Please come. To celebrate on the night we will be having the rest of our birthday cake together with some Bucks fizz. For the rest of the evening it was Bunting and Buns, and with scissors at the ready we started on the mammoth task of making the bunting for the Stradbroke Festifull, with necessary breaks for tea, coffee and of course the buns. Gill Bird

Stradbroke High School Annual Royal British Legion Poetry competition. The English Department at Stradbroke High School is very proud to work with the Royal British Legion in encouraging students to enter this competition. Students in Year 8 study a selection of War Poetry in the Autumn term, and Year 9 study Journey's End, a play set in the trenches in France. This years' entries in the competition were particularly powerful and many were clearly influenced by our two day visit to cemeteries, memorials and battlefields around Ypres and the Somme. Well done to all the students who submitted entries. Mrs H Rowe, Head of KS3 English

Friends of Stradbroke High School (FOSH) Friends of Stradbroke High School – February 2015 update. Our fundraising year has already got off to an excellent start, with £1000 having just been donated to the School from the East of England CO-OP. This will go towards the new floodlights for the Astro-turf at the School, which will be cheaper to run and will also provide full length coverage of the large playing surface. The benefit of this to the pupils and the community will be increased numbers of winter fixtures and local club use. In addition to the £10,000 that we spent just before Christmas on the pupils, we have now ordered a new amazing high jump landing bed for the PE Department. Due to popular demand, we are organising a series of events as follows: The next “Beat the Teacher Quiz night” at the High School, is now on Friday the 20th of March 2015 at 7.30pm. This is a great family fun night out with lots of nibbles, a sweet shop, soft drinks and a licensed bar. The very popular “Drive through scrap metal collections” in the High School car park, will now be on Saturday the 25th of April 2015 and Saturday the 7th of November 2015 - 8am until midday. Anything metal just no fridges / freezers please. The Stradbroke High School CARnival, is also being organised again this year on Sunday the 13th of September 2015 10am – 4pm. After the huge success of last year’s event, we intend more classic and performance cars & bikes, 50+ art and craft stalls, live music, aircraft fly-past, bouncy castles, Lazer Blast, fairground rides and of course lots of food, drink and ice-cream. We’ve decided to keep the entry price low and the same as last year at only £3 for all adults and Under 16s free. With a wet weather plan in place using the Schools large sports hall, this event will be a great day out for all the family come rain or shine. We will also have a substantial amount of gardening equipment for sale at the CARnival such as spades, forks, wheel-barrows – all for a small donation. We currently have a few items for sale for a small donation to the School. We have a Cuisinart Coffee Machine and six “Gaming Chairs” for x-box, PS3 etc. If you are interested please contact me direct. We are also considering, and would like your feedback and ideas, on the following events: A Saturday or Sunday car boot sale with a breakfast café at the School later in the year? A Christmas art and craft fair in December 2015? Your thoughts and comments would be most welcome. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. Hospice wants your unwanted Christmas presents If you receive any unwanted Christmas presents this year, please think about donating them to St Elizabeth Hospice. Donations of new or second-hand items are needed to resell in the Hospice’s 25 shops across East Suffolk and South Norfolk to raise funds for the local charity. If you are updating your furniture this Christmas or New Year, then why not donate your old fixtures and fittings to the Hospice too. Donations of good quality: sofas, chairs, tables, cabinets and other home furnishings are needed to resell and raise funds for the Hospice which costs millions of pounds a year to run. Van drivers can collect items from your home for free. Jason Rudderham, Head of Retail, said: “If you have any unwanted gifts that weren’t your cup of tea this Christmas we would love to have them in our shops. We are also in need of furniture to resell in our dedicated furniture stores in Ipswich and Stowmarket.” Money raised through the shops enables St Elizabeth Hospice to continue to make a real difference to the lives of their patients and families, friends and carers. To donate furniture, please call 0845 259 0319 and the Hospice will arrange collection from you. Other items can be dropped off at your nearest shop which can be found at www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/shops Samantha Catling

Stradbroke Craft Club We have started our new 'term' with the hexagonal box, we have made this box before, but it is so useful for storing so many items in, and always looks good as the finished article, that we have had requests to make it again. This takes two afternoons to complete, and we have to put in some work at home between dates. The programme for this 'term' is almost complete, with just one or two more dates to fill. We meet fortnightly on Monday afternoons in the Community Centre. If you would like to come along or want more information, please contact Claudene Merrett 384439 or Lily Lofts 388586 Lily Lofts

Forthcoming Events

Stradbroke Cinema On Thursday, 19th February, we are showing “Magic in the Moonlight” at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and ice-creams on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. Catherine McCormack, Hamish Linklater, Simon McBurney, Colin Firth and Emma Stone make magic together in Woody Allen's breezily entertaining 1920s romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle, which happens to be about a magician who debunks fake spirit mediums, and a beautiful young woman whom he believes is just that. Personal and professional complications ensue. The film is set in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Côte d’Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age. Colin Firth is as usual cool as a cucumber but in this he is actually likable and quite funny thanks to the always funny dialogue penned by Allen. Emma Stone is cute and funny as always. But what is really beautiful is the scenery of the French Riviera and the cinematography of Darius Khondji who has managed to capture the essence of Paris, Rome and the south of France. Come and see this magical film before the next moon rises. The Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre, opened in 1994, is a Charity, run by volunteers. At Cinema Nights you will have seen Wendy, who makes the announcements, (and the crew sitting on the right at the front) and Eileen on the door who is the Treasurer. They are both stepping down from the Committee; we are looking for replacements to join the Trust team, prepared to take on the task of Treasurer and also of Cinema “Guru”. Handover training will be available. Margaret Streeter, 384869 m.streeter@btinternet.com

Radio Stradbroke Never content to reflect on past achievements, Radio Stradbroke starts February with more ground breaking broadcasting. Cricket commentary is not alien to the team, but on Sunday 1st they will broadcast & video stream the “Turbo 10” cricket festival from the High School, with a live link up into the main hall for parents & friends to watch as it happens. The festival runs from 14:00 to 18:00. Consequently, there is no Sunday Session on that date, but will return with the following shows: Sunday 8th February 10:00 – 13:00 “Wes’s Wonderful Rock, Pop, & Soul Show”. DJ Wes does exactly what it says on the tin! Sunday 15th February 10:00 – 13:00 “Kim’s Valentine’s Day Love Songs” The first Lady of broadcasting, in direct competition with Radio 2’s Steve Wright, brings romance to the table, & a lot less talking. Sunday 22nd February 10:00 – 13:00 “Three Minute Heroes Part 2” DJs Richard & Huggy bring their much awaited follow up show, delving into the heartland of Punk Rock & New Wave. Sunday 1st March 10:00 – 13:00 “Soul Survivor” Station Manager Marty plays his vinyl collection of soul & dance music from the 70s & 80s. Stradbroke Church Village Show The Annual Flower, Vegetable and Produce Show will be held on Saturday 25th July 2015. There will be the usual classes, including classes for Allotment Holders. Also there will be classes for the Stradbroke Primary and Nursery School, kindly sponsored by STM Photographics of Stradbroke (01379 388667). The handicraft classes this year will be a quilted item, an item of knitting, embroidery or tapestry, a greeting card, a picture (pencil, watercolour or oil) max. 8” x 11”, an exhibit made of wood and/or metal. Flower shows incur a lot of expense. I do sell plants in May to help. If you would like to sponsor a class or classes at £1.50 each, or make a donation, it would be appreciated, so we can make a good profit on the day for the church funds. Please contact Roly on 01379 384839 or Mary on 384642. Schedules will be available in March. Potatoes for the heaviest crop of potatoes in a bucket will be on sale Roly Copping at the Cake Stall in Church Street on Saturday 7th March 2015.

News & Views The Big Switch-On! Nearly 100 people turned out in the cold on Sunday, December 7th to witness the grand switch-on of the Christmas lights and star on the church tower. Despite there being a distinctly chilly wind, Nick Stones, Chair of the Parish Council, gave a heart-warming speech and entertained the gathered crowd with a very fetching hat! After the traditional countdown, there was a dramatic pause when darkness reigned then, on the second attempt, all the lights came on accompanied by a cheer. It had been even colder at 8.00am on Saturday morning when the stalwarts in the form of Peter, Peter and Peter (yes!), Roger, Gerald and Dean unravelled miles of light cables then balanced precariously on ladders to drape the tree with the twinkling stars. All agreed that the result was delightful. Maybe the tree looks a little bald at the back but a lesson learnt for next year….. even more lights. We are very grateful to everyone who helped – the mince-pie makers especially Margaret Jenkins who has broken the world record of producing the most mince pies in a week – the mulled wine dispensers – Spar for kindly supplying sausage rolls on top of their generous donation - Dougie and his fabulous organ and, of course, everyone who came to support the event.Next Christmas we would like to make it an even bigger event and have some exciting ideas – watch this space for more details and how to get involved. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley (Parish Councillor)

Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund A campaign to raise £714,000 to create a resource centre for people with life-limiting illnesses has been given a £20,000 boost thanks to the generosity of local fundraisers. The Patrick Stead League of Friends pledged the money to Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF) at its AGM last week. It takes the total raised so far towards the Information and Support Centre (ISC) to £437,561. The ISC aims to bring a full range of holistic services closer to home for people in north east Suffolk and south Norfolk. This includes benefits advice, wigfitting, children and family support, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. Ted Edwards, ISC chairman, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Friends have decided to support our project with this fantastic £20,000 donation. Their generosity takes the total raised to date to just over 61% of our total, which is excellent news and has brought our vision of creating the ISC one step closer. Our thanks go to everyone for their amazing support so far, which we hope will continue during 2015 so that work can begin on creating this fantastic resource for our community.” For more information about the ISC project, or to Liz Hearnshaw make a donation, visit www.halesworthhealth.org/information-and-support-centre

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association-SARA Have you taken a look at the amazing digital collection shared with the village by very generous donors? We are adding to it almost daily. Currently there are 900+ items of photographs, letters, news items, cine, audio . . . from the 18th century to the 1990s and a toe dip into the 21st century. One of the gems that found its way to the Archive is the Police Cell Book (now housed at the Suffolk Records Office) It is the official cell book which was started in 1885 in which the prisoner, the crime and the stay were recorded. However as the 100 year rule applies to this volume only entries up to 1914 may be published. Currently the digital archive has the first 10 years available to view. We will be adding further entries up to 1900 by the end of February. During the 1830s a few villagers and their families emigrated to Canada and to Australia with the help of the Parish. We are now receiving enquiries from their descendants around the world. The first month of the digital archive launch attracted over 30,000 page views showing that a small village on the edge of the county of Suffolk is of interest worldwide On the morning of Sunday February 22nd we will be at The Court House CafĂŠ enjoying their hospitality and invite you to come and join us for our inaugural "Archive Sunday" Archive Sunday is open to everyone who wants to contribute to or find out more from the Archive. We will be on hand to take copies of anything you may wish to add to the archive (copies not originals - we copy not keep!) we can copy photos and documents, etc. using a scanner and can copy files using computers. We also have the facility to copy VHS home videos for the archive by arrangement. So dig out your camcorder footage of all those past Stradbroke events! Other opportunities on Archive Sunday include offering an introduction to the online services available through Suffolk Libraries that may interest local historians and genealogical researchers, such as British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry.co.uk Library edition. Just a reminder - you will need to be a registered user of Suffolk Libraries (i.e. have a library card) to access this service in the Court House. We will be holding monthly Archive get togethers at the Court House - put the last Sunday morning of each month in your diary now! Ann Readman

Are you worried about housing? SNAP may be able to help...... SNAP is a government funded organisation that can assist you if you find yourself in housing difficulties, are facing eviction or repossession. SNAP, established since 2008, offers free housing advice, support and guidance to those worried that they may lose their home or are already homeless. Supporting over 540 people at any one time, the only conditions are that you must have a housing need, be able to access public funds, live in Suffolk and be aged 16 or over. SNAP is committed to helping people in Suffolk to maintain their homes and live independently. SNAP is made up of 6 six charitable organisations, Orwell Housing Association, Anglia Care Trust, Ipswich Housing Action Group, Centra, Together for Wellbeing and Family Action. The consortium employs dedicated housing related support workers who work with service users in their own homes, offer telephone support and run drop-ins throughout the Babergh, Mid Suffolk, Suffolk Coastal, St Edmundsbury, Ipswich and Forest Heath districts of Suffolk. SNAP is able to assist those who have housing issues, for whatever reason, by working with them to address rent or mortgage arrears and debts, to apply for social housing or look at alternative housing options. Support workers are trained to liaise with landlords and local authorities in order to claim discretionary housing payments and backdated housing benefit if clients are eligible for these. SNAP workers can also provide support with form filling, help set up utilities, maximise income, advise on applicable benefits and offer budgeting and debt guidance. SNAP has had great success in helping service users to avoid eviction and can also signpost those with additional needs, for example mental health issues, severe debts, physical or sensory disabilities and learning disabilities to appropriate organisations who, in many cases, work alongside SNAP to offer a holistic approach. If you, or anyone you know, is experiencing difficulties with their housing they can get in touch with SNAP via the referrals team, CARA, on 01473 467727. Everyone who applies will be offered advice on their housing issues and those deemed eligible for further assistance will receive an assessment in their own home, followed by short term telephone or face to face support, in order to address their housing needs. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club Stradbroke Cricket Club held their AGM in January. Poorly attended as ever, a result of either total apathy, or safe in the knowledge that the Committee are doing a good job, and there is no requirement to voice any dissent. In the hope it is the latter, the Committee remain pretty much unchanged from 2014, the elected officers being: Chairman – Michael Hugman, Vice Chairman – Dan Tompkins, Secretary – Richard Pierce-Saunderson, Minutes Secretary – James Gilbee, Treasurer – Caroline Johnson, Welfare Officer – Richard Pierce-Saunderson, Youth Development Officer – Tom Smith, Ladies & Girls Co-Ordinator – Kate Thompson, Webmaster – Olly Bickley, Vikings Captains – Ben Flatt & Martin Cuthbert, A Team Captain – James Gilbee, Groundsman – Michael Hugman. Malcolm Tenneson & Alan Munday were also re-elected to the Committee. Don Lummis accepted the Clubs invitation to remain as Honorary President. This continuity & stability, plus a healthy bank balance despite the large outlay on the new Community Store, gives the club freedom to pursue their development of youth. There are regular Tuesday junior coaching sessions at the High School, & as part of the North Suffolk initiative, regular Sunday afternoon girls coaching sessions at Hartismere High School. The most exciting though, is the “Turbo 10” festival at the High School on Sunday 1st February from 2pm to 6pm. It is a six a side twist on 20/20 indoor cricket. The event will be broadcast & videod by Radio Stradbroke. This all costs money, so please enter a team in the ANNUAL POP MUSIC QUIZ at the Community Centre on Saturday 7th February 7:30pm start. Teams of 4, entry £5 per person (inc nibbles) £40 prize to the winning team. Keep supporting your local cricket club in 2015. Michael Hugman

As both your local MP, and as a practicing NHS hospital doctor who has cared for patients from Suffolk, I have always been a strong supporter of Hartismere Community Hospital. Working with the League of Friends, and many others, I helped to keep Hartismere open when it was repeatedly threatened with closure. Perhaps one of my proudest moments as your MP, was when I succeeded in getting £1.5 million from the local NHS to refurbish our much loved community hospital in the summer of 2012. Hartismere provides about 25 different community health and rehabilitation services for patients. Given that the hospital is 20 miles from both Ipswich and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals, I have always believed that Hartismere has the potential to offer many more NHS services to patients in our rural communities. So, over the past 2 years, I have been working hard to persuade local health bosses to provide more services from the hospital, and I am pleased to be able to report success. There will soon be a new learning disability service at Hartismere, providing care and support for children with learning disabilities, as well as for their families. And, over the next few months, a new care home will be built on the hospital site. The new care home will be able to provide vital NHS community beds to look after patients in need of rehabilitation after a fall or illness, as well as providing respite care beds for people with cancer and terminal illnesses. By 2018, there will be over 3 million people in the UK with 3 or more, long term medical conditions like diabetes and dementia. In order to look after people with increasingly complex medical needs, more care needs to be provided in the community. At my very first meeting with the new Chief Executive of Ipswich Hospital Nick Hulme, I explained to him the huge potential of Hartismere to support close to home NHS care, in particular for frail older patients. So, I am pleased to report that Ipswich Hospital is now examining how Hartismere could provide more outpatient and other NHS community services for rural patients which are currently only available at Ipswich. I am also pleased to have helped to persuade the health service in Norfolk to put money into providing more patient services at Hartismere. This is a very big step forward. Hartismere has always been funded by the NHS in Suffolk, but from 2016, for the very first time, additional funding from the NHS in Norfolk will be available to help Hartismere provide more patient care services for our rural communities. The future for Hartismere, and for patients in rural Suffolk looks bright, but we must keep up the pressure on the local NHS to ensure that current plans translate into the reality of better facilities and improved care for patients. As your MP, I shall continue to use my knowledge and skills as an NHS hospital doctor to do all that I can to protect and support Hartismere Hospital, and the patients it cares for. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems. If you think that I may be able to help you, please contact me on 01728 685 148, or email using daniel.poulter.mp@parliament.uk For more information please visit www.drdanielpoulter.com Dan Poulter ——————————————————————————————————————————————--

This winter has been amazingly mild and nature seems a bit confused by our changing climate. At the allotment, artichokes are flowering along with carnations, poached egg plants and marigolds. Geraniums persist in my window boxes despite several sharp frosts. David, on the allotment above me, gently reminded me that it’s time to get my plot dug over to maximize the effects of the weather in breaking down our clay soil. When it’s a bit grey and damp, I find it hard to feel motivated. I prefer browsing through a seed catalogue dreaming of summer. There is such a variety of seeds to choose from. Many of us grow F1 hybrids which are seeds from two genetically different parents designed to produce plants with the best features of both. Sadly however you cannot collect the seed from your harvest and expect the same results. The next or F2 generation will be very mixed genetically and will not produce a uniform crop. So the seed merchants get us to dip into our pockets for new packets of their seeds. An alternative is to grow a heritage variety. These are more old fashioned and may lack the vigour and disease resistance of F1 plants but often they can produce extremely tasty crops. By keeping old fashioned varieties going we ensure the survival of a range of plant genes which may be needed in the future. The Organic society looks for plant guardians every year, individuals who will plant, nurture and harvest a heritage variety in order to return an increased amount of seed to the seed bank. If you have unused space on your plot it sounds like a lovely and worthwhile thing to do. If looking at seed catalogues is not your cup of tea, spend a lively winter evening at the SAGA quiz night which is now on 21st February. As well as a quiz and good company, supper will be provided, and all for only £6 a head. Tickets will be available in the library. Teams of four are welcome, if you need help to make up a team let us know and we will match you up with others. Gill Palmer A sudden turn in the very mild weather has meant checking the chickens water often to ensure it has not frozen solid. The chickens don't seem to mind though. They have thick feather duvets on! Equal, I am sure to the many layers I wear. Hopefully all your digging has been done by now to allow the frosts to break the soil down into friable, crumbly loveliness. Don't panic if you are still behind though. Little and often is the trick to get it all done. If you do too much and put your back out, then you will get behind. If you are behind, try to dig the areas where produce will be going early. Leave the later crop areas till last. Some crops don't go in until May, so still loads of time left. We have a few plots left for rent. It is a lovely site. A place to go to take your mind off everything. I always come back happier than I went. It is so peaceful. In the height of summer it is so rewarding to sit down with a cup of freshly brewed tea, and listen to the bees humming, the birds singing and the chickens chuckling. East Anglian Air Ambulance Are you looking for a new challenge this year? Why not volunteer to help local charity East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and play a part in continuing our lifesaving work. EAAA is a 365 day-a-year lifesaving helicopter emergency medical service working across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Since the charity began 15 years ago, we have attended over 16,000 missions. In 2015, EAAA are looking to recruit more volunteers across the region. EAAA will be marking 15 years of service with events throughout the region, including ‘Tea at 15:00’ on May 15 at locations all over East Anglia. EAAA could not exist without our team of over 200 committed volunteers. We are hugely proud of all our volunteers and enormously grateful for the time that they have given. As a volunteer you play a vital role in helping us to keep our two helicopters flying 365 days a year across East Anglia. Our volunteers choose the time that they can give to us, whether it is on a weekly basis or occasionally helping out at events. Every hour of time given to us makes a huge difference. There are plenty of opportunities, from organising events, to helping us for a few hours at one of our events across East Anglia. You could even spend your time volunteering behind the scenes at one of our seven offices, with anything from operations to communications. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in 2015, visit our website http://www.eaaa.org.uk/support-us/volunteer/becoming-a-volunteer/ or contact your local area Fundraising Manager. Park Radio We’ve made it! Park Radio, after a four year wait, has now officially applied to Ofcom – the media regulator, for its full time 5 year FM licence to broadcast to Diss, Harleston and Eye. Applications from East of England closed on Dec 16th having been open to groups like Park Radio since September this year. The 7,000 word submission to become the local radio station serving the area in and around the three towns in the Waveney Valley, with a potential reach of 50,000 people , have needed to include very precise key commitments. "We've had to be very specific as to what we will deliver to the communities we plan to serve, against criteria including social gain, participation in the service, programming output, access to facilities & training as well as to whom we are locally accountable" Ofcom who will decide who gets a licence by April will each year monitor Park Radio's performance again what they've committed to do once live. Park Radio are still currently working with both DTC and SNC on having its Diss base at the DYCC on Shelfanger Rd, with contact points also in Eye an Haleston. The station, if successful plan to be on air full time by the end of next year and will remain very visible at the many social and community event it arranges and attends across the year. Anyone from the area wishing to get involved in the radio station should email chris.moyse@parkradio.co.uk for more information. Be part of it! Paul Stephen

—————————— Letters to the Editor Many thanks to the friends in Stradbroke who sent their condolences, kind thoughts and gave me support after my recent loss, it was much appreciated. Rosemary Howard Sandra and family wish to thank everyone for their kind messages and donations which helped to raise £3062.80 for Marie Curie and St Elizabeth Hospice following the loss of Paul. Many thanks, Lucy Chambers David passed away suddenly on 26th October 2014. His death came as a great shock although he had been ill for some considerable time. Until health failed him he had been so happy here in north Suffolk and loved our home and village life. At a time when I needed help it came through the overwhelming kindness and support received from family and friends, especially those in Stradbroke. I cannot find words to thank you all enough for the help both offered and given, the care and love which manifested itself in so many ways and is enabling me to get through this difficult period. To be part of such a wonderful community is indeed a privilege for which I am very grateful. Donations given in David's memory amounted to £1002.22 and this sum has been passed to East Anglian Air Ambulance. Thank you all once more, Moyra Gibling Yes – Dog Fouling again! I am sure you are as fed up with hearing about this problem as I am fed up with feeling obliged to clear up the mess of other people's dogs. However, I have just returned from a relatively short walk around the village and managed to clear at least 15+ piles of mess. The permissive path was provided so that residents could enjoy a safe and pleasant walk to visit loved ones up in the cemetery, NOT to provide local dogs with a toilet. The path itself is not too bad, but if walkers need to step off the path onto the grass verge to let others pass, they enter a 'mine field' of poo! It was disgusting today. The other latest anti-social habit seems to be to leave a pile of excrement on the private grass verges of local residents. I am really at a loss as to how to get through to the ignorant people who still can't understand that it is their responsibility to clean up after their dog. The majority of the dog owners in this village do their best to keep it a clean and pleasant environment for all to enjoy by clearing up after their pets. If you are too ignorant, anti-social, selfish and lazy to do this, then you are not fit to own a dog. If you disagree, please feel free to call me Pam Cane – dog owner - 384312 Many thanks to everyone who come to our coffee morning and supported the Children’s Society. The total collected from the boxes was £280.29 and we also received donations of £25. Takings were less than last year, partly due to some 8 ‘missing’ boxes which we hope to track down in the coming year. Please contact me at any time if you would like to become a box holder.
