BRAHMOS MISSILE SYSTEM A ‘GAME-CHANGER’ —NSC

SUPERSONIC CRUISE MISSILE’S RANGE COVERS WPS

THE National Security Council said the government’s purchase of India’s BrahMos missile system would be a “game-changer” for the country’s maritime defensive capabilities.

NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said the BrahMos missile is one of the fastest cruise missiles in the world, noting that its maximum range would cover the West Philippine Sea.

Indian media reported that the first batch of the supersonic cruise missile arrived in the Philippines on Friday as part of the $375 million agreement between the government and BrahMos Aerospace in 2022.

Malaya, however, said he was not in a position to confirm the delivery of the cruise missile.

“I don’t want to preempt my partners at the Department of National Defense. I think they will make an announcement soon. I’d like to defer to them because NSC didn’t buy it, so I want them to confirm rather than me,” he said.

In October, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said the BrahMos cruise missile system would be deployed first with the Philippine Marine Corps.

“The Marines will be getting the first deliveries of the BrahMos – I think they will be getting three batteries,” he said.

While he did not specify the number of batteries the Army would be getting, Brawner said it would be higher than those that would be acquired by the Marines.

A missile battery typically consists of three mobile autonomous launchers with two or three missile tubes each, along with the tracking systems.

The BrahMos cruise missile can be launched from a ship, aircraft, submarine or land, and has a top speed of around Mach 2.8 (around 3,400 km. per hour), and is capable of carrying warheads weighing 200 to 300 kilograms.

SOME 1.7 million individuals have been affected by the El Niño phenomenon, which has resulted in close to P4 billion in damage and losses to the country’s agriculture sector.

DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao said the affected individuals are in Regions 2, 3, Mimaropa, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12 and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

“The DSWD is distributing family food packs. This is part of the humanitarian response in areas affected by El Niño, especially for families experiencing lack of food due to severe drought,” she said.

NSC PROBES INFLUX OF CHINESE STUDENTS IN CAGAYAN PROVINCE

THE National Security Council is now investigating reports of an influx of Chinese students in areas close to military bases that can be accessed by American troops, in particular in Cagayan province.

“This is something that is currently being investigated now. Our intelligence units have been assigned to take a look at the situation there,” NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said yesterday.

“Is this a case of a national security threat or is this just a case of people wanting to study in the Philippines?” he added.

Chinese-Filipino figure Teresita Ang See and two Cagayan local officials, however, lamented

than P58 million worth of family food packs in the affected areas, Dumlao said.

According to the Department of Agriculture, damage on rice crops accounted for more than half of the total losses or at least P2.36 billion.

Damage on high value crops and corn were placed at nearly P868 million and P669 million, respectively while losses in the fisheries sector were valued at P33.83 million and in livestock and poultry at P6.95 million.

Of the 11 regions that sustained agriculture damage, among the hardest hit were MIMAROPA and Western Visayas.

Meanwhile, Dumlao said the DSWD has Project Lawa and Project Binhi

what they described as a wave of Sinophobic sentiment.

“The past days’ preoccupation with deliberate fanning of Sinophobia and racism by politicians and media spreading baseless whodunits of ‘students as spies’ is dangerous and unfortunate,” Ang See said in a statement during a forum at Quezon City’s Kamuning Bakery Cafe.

She cited how the Commission on Higher Education reported a significant number of Chinese students at St. Paul University in Tuguegarao “without qualifying what is significant relative to the total student population or giving context that it is the only university given authority by CHED and Bureau of Immigration to accept foreign students.”

which aim to help El Niño-affected communities have access to water and food.

Beneficiaries of the projects are provided with temporary income via the cash-for-training and cash-for-work components. “They are assisted in building water cisterns or small farm reservoirs, which are sized 20 by 24 square meters and 50 feet deep, that can be used as water sources for their farms. The Department of Agriculture provides technical expertise,” she said.

Under the pilot program of the two projects, small farm reservoirs were already constructed in Ifugao, Antique, and Davao.

THE upcoming “Balikatan” joint military exercise by the Philippines and the United States is not a preparation for war or conflict in the West Philippine Sea, National Security Council Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said.

During a news forum in Quezon City on Saturday, Malaya said the annual military exercise between the two countries is not “a declaration to escalate tension in the disputed maritime region.”

“War is not on the table – let me

just make that very clear. War is not one of the instruments of national policy of the Philippines,” Malaya said.

He further stated that China tends to overreact to every action the Philippines has been doing.

“ Everything we do, there’s always

a reaction from China so we can’t do things that they’re not afraid of, that’s why our people, our fellow countrymen are worried,” Malaya said.

Malaya said the Philippines continues to reach out to Beijing for a diplomatic discussions.

“We are exhausting all diplomatic options to resolve this issue. We wish a constructive dialogue with the People’s Republic of China,” Malaya noted.

Concerns of a possible escalation of conflict with China rose after reports on the sighting of the United States Army’s Mid-Range Capability

Missile System (MRCS) has been deployed in Northern Luzon.

Citizens’ movement group P1NAS said the deployment of the said missile system signals a declaration of war against China. This year’s Balikatan Exercise will run from April 22 to May 10.

IMMIGRATION AGENTS APPREHEND WANTED CHINESE NATIONAL

BUREAU of Immigration (BI) authorities apprehended a Chinese national wanted in his own country for fraud, who will now be deported to face criminal charges in China.

The person was identified as Qiu Jiajian, who was arrested along Ongpin Street, Binondo, Manila, at the request of the Chinese government.

Chinese prosecutors alleged that Qiu issued falsified special value-added tax (VAT) invoices in violation of Beijing’s criminal code.

He allegedly used the name of an import-export trading firm in Quanzhou and other shell companies to falsely issue over 200 special VAT invoices for nonexistent goods valued at more than 26 million yuan, or roughly US$3.5 million, thus defrauding the Chinese government of tax revenues.

BI also recently nabbed another Chinese national who was facing charges related to online gambling. His identity was withheld at the request of Interpol.

“As we navigate these challenges, strengthening our defense and economic ties becomes even more crucial,” the leader of the 309-strong Philippine House of Representatives said. The US group who attended the event consisted of the following: Reps. Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan of Northern Mariana Islands, Robert Scott of Virginia, Don Bacon of Nebraska, James Moylan of Guam, and Darrell Issa of California. During his official visit to the United States, Speaker Romualdez also met Sen. Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Sen. Christopher Van Hollen of Maryland, Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama, Rep. Ami Bera of California, Rep. James R. Baird of Indiana, Rep. Ed Case of Hawaii, and Rep. Brad Sherman of California. Romualdez said the Philippines appreciates the support of the United States and its allies in the region and in Europe in confronting the challenges in the West Philippine Sea.

Quarrying activities in the province include excavating building materials such as gravel and sand, known as aggregates.  Marcos said that while the quarrying industry remains a vital component of the economy, regulations must be strictly enforced, said Marcos. She said the provincial government and LGUs should impose strict regulations on the use of barangay, municipal, and provincial roads by trucks carrying quarried products. Marcos also emphasized that contractors should use their respective funds to conduct research on the sediment

“Such support, even just in the form of expressions of concern, is invaluable to us in bolstering our defense of our sovereignty, our territorial integrity and maritime domain,” he added.

PH, JAPAN SET TO SIGN ACCESS DEAL, SAYS MALAYA

THE National Security Council (NSC) bared that the Philippines and Japan are expected to sign the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) before the end of 2024.

NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya, in a new forum, also said the move will “solidify the defense cooperation between the two maritime nations.”

The RAA—which is quite similar to the United States’ Visiting Forces Agreement—will serve as the guidelines for the entry and operation of Filipino troops in Japanese territory and vessels, and vice versa, the official said.

“After the trilateral summit (in Washington DC), the Japanese Prime Minister and the President of the Philippines have given instructions to our negotiators to proceed immediately,” Malaya, quoted by ABS-CBN News, said.

“We are confident that before the end of this year will be signed,”he said.

While “such agreements take

time” the negotiations between Manila and Tokyo are “moving at a quick pace,” Malaya said.

The Philippines first announced that it is planning to sign an RAA with Japan in November last year. Earlier this week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that the RAA would be different from the VFA as Japanese troops are not expected to stay in the Philippines.

The President earlier also said:

“It’s not going to be as if it’s their base and they, their seamen will come down and will go into the city and go— I don’t think that that’s a part of the agreement.”

“There aren’t any real conflicts

in principle. It’s just a question of getting the language down and defining precisely how it’s going to work, the logistical systems and how that’s going to work,” he said.

“It should not take very much longer. I think we’re very close to completion on that.”

Reports said several countries are planning to ink similar military agreements with the Philippines to be able to send their troops to the country for joint cooperation and training exercises, Malaya said.

“They understand that our position is important. We stand for the rule of law, a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the official further said.

THE Manila International Container Port (MICP) has announced its partnership with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to collaborate in combating drug smuggling across Philippine borders. MICP District Collector Carmelita Talusan emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing the complex challenges posed by drug smuggling.

“The fight against illegal drugs requires a unified and concerted effort from all enforcement agencies. Through close collaboration and information sharing, we can achieve greater success in intercepting illicit drug  shipments,” she said. Talusan said the Bureau of Customs (BOC) under the leadership of Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio remains steadfast in its mission to prevent the entry of illegal drugs into the country. Present during the meeting with representatives of PDEA and PCG were officials from the MICP Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service, Enforcement and Security Service, Customs Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force, X-Ray Inspection Project, and Law Division. CEBUPAC FOCUSES ON SUSTAINABILITY, GETS NEW PLANE

CEBU Pacific Air (CEB) received its fourth aircraft delivery this year, showcasing its commitment to sustainable aviation and operational resilience. The aircraft – a brand new, more fuel-efficient A320neo – arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila from an Airbus facility in Tianjin, China.

“This aircraft delivery supports our goal of providing safe, reliable, and affordable flights as the demand for air travel remains strong. We also continue to incorporate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in our operations as part of our decarbonization efforts, which can pave the way for a more sustainable air travel in the coming years,” said Alex Reyes, CEB Chief Strategy Officer.

Bangsamoro Board of Investments (BBOI) chairperson Mohammad Pasigan earlier said the airline’s opening will bring more investors to BARMM and lead to continuous growth in investments.

The autonomous region recorded a total of P3.7 billion of investments in the current fiscal year as of April 2024, based on the BBOI’s report. This already surpasses the office’s 2024 target of P2.6 billion, officials said.

DENR TO LAUNCH ‘EARTH DAY EVERY DAY PROJECT’ TO CURB PLASTIC POLLUTION

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will launch on Monday the “Earth Day Every Day Project” to mobilize the youth in curbing plastic pollution.

The project is a plastics collection competition among students nationwide. It aims to engage the youth on the importance of recycling plastics and to foster a culture of environmental responsibilities in line with the values of scouting.

“The Earth Day Every Day Project advocates the promotion of feasible methods to reduce waste and foster

a culture of sustainability among the youth and communities, and motivates participation through incentives,” Environment Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said in a statement.

Loyzaga will lead the event to be held in Pasay City.  She is expected to sign the Pledge of Commitment for the project with SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Assistant Vice President Jessica Bianca Sy-Bell, Nestle’ Philippines, Inc. Corporate Affairs Head Senior Vice President Joey Uy, Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Secretary General Kim Robert de Leon, and Girl Scouts of the

Philippines (GSP) National President Cristina Lim-Yuson.  On April 22, student scouts from the BSP and GSP from various schools will bring plastic items they collected, including bottles and bags, for a weigh-in at SM Mall of Asia. The class with the highest volume of plastic items will win a prize.

Students may bring the plastics they have collected to designated SM Supermalls collection facilities in the cities of Pasay, Marikina, Pasig, Manila, and Quezon City within the National Capital Region, as well as Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite, Cebu, and Davao.

Points will be assigned according to the type of plastic collected. Every month, prizes will be awarded to the class with the highest points, and at the end of the year, to the school with classes that accumulated the highest points.

The DENR said the project is in line with this year’s Earth Day celebration theme, Planet vs Plastic, which “calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion, and build a plastic-free planet for generations to come.”

SAF is a drop-in fuel, with similar characteristics as conventional jet fuels. It does not require any adaptations to the aircraft or engines and does not have any negative impact on performance. The use of SAF results in up to 80% reduction in carbon emissions across the fuel’s lifecycle.

CEB operates a diverse commercial fleet consisting of eight Airbus 330s, 34 Airbus 320s, 21 Airbus 321s, and 14 ATR turboprop aircraft, providing the Philippines with the largest network coverage.

MIAA COMMENDS ANOTHER HONEST AIRPORT STAFF

ANOTHER worker at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was commended for honesty.

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Eric Jose Ines praised a porter named Irwin Rommel Diana from D’Frada Porterage Services, who found a black pouch containing 70 pieces of $100 bills (P400,000.00) in NAIA Terminal 3.

Diana promptly surrendered the pouch to the airport’s lost and found section, which was later recovered by the owner, a traveler holding an American passport.

Diana, 35, has been working at NAIA for 14 years and emphasized the importance of honesty to fellow airport workers.

On April 13, another porter from the same company, Victor Perez, returned 100 pieces of $100 bills under similar circumstances.

Ines and other MIAA officials were happy to receive the good news about what the airport workers did.

The airport management will formally commend the two porters during the May flag-raising ceremony. Joel E. Zurbano

US HOUSE TO VOTE ON UKRAINE, ISRAEL, TAIWAN AID PACKAGE

THE US House of Representatives is poised to hold a crucial vote on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) on a major aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan—and a possible ban of TikTok.

The votes on the $95 billion foreign aid and arms bills are expected to begin at 1:00 pm (1700 GMT), and embattled Republican Speaker Mike Johnson will need Democratic votes to get them passed.

The bills are the product of months of acrimonious negotiations, pressure from US allies and repeated pleas for assistance from Ukrainian

President Volodymyr Zelensky. Spending bills cost the last Republican speaker of the House his job, and funding for Ukraine has been at the heart of the partisan squabbling.

The United States has been the chief military backer of Ukraine in its war against Russia, but Congress has not approved large-scale funding for its ally for nearly a year and a half, mainly because of the bickering across the political aisle.

President Joe Biden and Democratic lawmakers in Congress have been pushing for a major new weapons package for Ukraine for months.

But Republicans, influenced by the party’s presidential candidate Donald Trump, are reluctant to provide funding to Kyiv for the drawn-out conflict.

The financing of the war has become a point of contention ahead of a presidential election in November that is expected to pit Biden against

Trump once again. Johnson, after months of hesitation, finally threw his support behind a $61 billion package for Ukraine that includes economic assistance and weapons.

“To put it bluntly, I’d rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys,” Johnson said.

The bill also allows Biden to confiscate and sell Russian assets and provide the money to Ukraine to finance reconstruction, a move that has been embraced by other G7 nations.

A total of $13 billion in military assistance has been allocated for America’s historic ally Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza.

The money will essentially be used to reinforce Israel’s “Iron Dome” air defenses.

More than $9 billion will be earmarked to address “the dire need for humanitarian assistance for Gaza as well as other vulnerable populations around the world,” the legislation says. AFP

TAIWAN DETECTS SURGE IN CHINESE MILITARY AIRCRAFT

A SURGE of Chinese military aircraft was detected around Taiwan during a three-hour window on Saturday, Taipei’s defense ministry said, a month before the self-ruled island’s May 20 inauguration of incoming president Lai Ching-te.

China claims democratic Taiwan as part of its territory, and has said it will never renounce the use of force to bring the island under its control.

Tensions between both sides of the narrow 180-kilometer (110-mile) Taiwan Strait have ramped up since January when Vice President Lai –regarded as a “dangerous separatist” by Beijing – was elected as the island’s incoming leader.

Experts also said military drills between the United States and the Philippines which kick off Monday near the potential flashpoint of the South China Sea—which Beijing claims in its entirety—could have sparked the show of force around Taiwan.

Taipei’s defense ministry said since 8:15 am (0015 GMT) it had detected 21 Chinese aircraft around Taiwan, including J-16 fighter jets, Y-8 medium-range transport planes, and drones. “17 aircraft (of the 21) crossed the median line and its extension, entered our northern, central, and southwestern (air defence identification zone), and joined PLA vessels for joint combat patrol,” it said in a statement posted on X around 11:30 am.

Taiwan’s armed forces “are monitoring the activities with our joint surveillance systems.”

Beijing, which does not recognize the median line bisecting the Taiwan Strait, sends warplanes and naval vessels around Taiwan on a near-daily basis.

Experts say it is a form of “greyzone harassment”, stopping short of

an outright act of war but enough to exhaust Taipei’s armed forces. The record number occurred in September when Beijing’s military sent 103 aircraft—40 of which crossed the median line—in a 24-hour period.

Under the two-term administrations of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, tensions between Beijing and Taipei have ramped up, as she and her government do not acknowledge China’s claim.

Her deputy Lai—who used to be more outspoken about Taiwan independence but has moderated his views in recent years—will come into power on May 20.

Before the elections, Beijing warned he would be the cause of “war and decline” for Taiwan.

Saturday’s show of force comes a day after China activated two aviation routes that run close to Taiwan’s outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu –

‘EARLY-STAGE’ AI MAKES WAVES AT CHINA SEX TOYS EXHIBITION

AMONG the rows of vibrators, rubber torsos and leather harnesses at a Chinese sex toys exhibition in Shanghai this weekend, the beginnings of an AI-driven shift in the industry quietly pulsed. China manufactures around 70 percent of the world’s sex toys, most of it the “hardware” on display at the fair –whether that be technicolour tentacled dildos or hyper-realistic personalized silicone dolls. But smart toys have been rising in popularity for some time. Many major European and American brands already offer tech-enhanced products that can enable long-distance love, monitor well-being and even bring people one step closer to an ultimate sci-fi fantasy —sex with robots.

Integrating artificial intelligence has become more popular in the last two

years, according to Hannes Hultman, Europe sales manager for Chinese sex toy firm Svakom. “But it’s still very early-stage for a lot of this,” he told AFP on Friday. Svakom, one of the better-known Chinese brands overseas, is among those venturing further into the field of teledildonics, using networked toys to create virtual sexual encounters.

One of its masturbators can sync with video to replicate the actions on screen – either with preprogrammed content via Svakom’s app, or with an AI plug-in that watches a video on approved sites in real-time and mimics it.

The company has also partnered with firms that offer AI chatbot “fantasy partners.” “You can ask the AI to control your toy,” said Hultman. “You create your

own girlfriend and actually interact. And now you can basically touch your body through the toy.”

Sistalk Technology, a Beijing-based company that made phone software before pivoting to the adult industry, also has a feature on its app that allows an AI “girlfriend” to control a toy.

A salesperson told AFP that demand from China’s younger generation, with more disposable income and higher standards, was changing the market.

“Although we make sex toys, we’re trying to change the mindset of our community and make (the focus) less pornographic,” he said.

Sistalk’s app can function as a social media platform, with users socializing and sharing their hobbies and likes.

They can also choose to virtually hook up and control each other’s sex toys. AFP

which Taipei condemned as “unilateral measures” that would increase flight safety risks.

China’s aviation authority also said Friday the airspace around Fuzhou Changle Airport—30 kilometers from the closest outlying Taiwanese island – would be “further optimized and adjusted” on May 16, four days before the inauguration.

Political analyst Wen-ti Sung told AFP China“may be trying to show teeth to back up” the expansion of the new flight path.

But he added that “China is playing on a grand chessboard,” and the rampup in warplane activity could be about the South China Sea issue.

On Monday, the United States and the Philippines will begin joint maritime exercises which will be held beyond Philippine territorial waters for the first time, “edging ever closer towards Taiwan Strait,” said Sung. AFP

X FIGHTS AUSSIE WATCHDOG OVER STABBING POSTS

ELON Musk’s X said Saturday it will fight an Australian watchdog’s order to take down content related to the brutal stabbing of a priest during a live-streamed Sydney church service.

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was allegedly slashed in the head and chest by a 16-year-old suspect on Monday, sparking a riot by followers of the Assyrian Christian church in western Sydney. NORTH KOREA TESTS ‘SUPER-LARGE WARHEAD’—MEDIA

NORTH Korea has tested a “superlarge warhead” designed for a strategic cruise missile, state media said Saturday, the most recent test since UN sanctions monitoring against the nuclear-armed nation was upended last month by Russia. The announcement comes after Russia in March used its United Nations Security Council veto to effectively end UN monitoring of violations of the raft of sanctions on Kim Jong Un’s government for its nuclear and weapons program. Analysts have warned that North Korea could be testing cruise missiles ahead of sending them to Russia for use in Ukraine, with Washington and Seoul claiming Kim has shipped weapons to Moscow, despite UN sanctions banning any such moves. CSTELLAR MINDS PH UNLOCKS TODDLERS’ POTENTIAL

HILDHOOD friends, now business partners, Faye Beatrix Dela Torre and Fiona Guillermo have embarked on a mission to revolutionize early childhood education in the Philippines.

Their brainchild, Stellar Minds PH, is a learning hub that champions play-based learning for toddlers, a privilege only a uent families can a ord.

“When we started Stellar Minds, we wanted to extend the same experience that only the rich can a ord. We understand that there is a need to embrace more progressive approach to learning. Slowly, we are now in the era of catering to alpha generation children,” Dela Torre said.

Having grown up in traditional, structured classrooms themselves, Dela Torre and Guillermo understand the limitations of rote learning. They believe that play-based learning is a powerful tool for igniting a love of learning in younger kids.

At Stellar Minds, 80 percent to 90 percent of a child’s day is dedicated to purposeful play. By making slime or building with blocks, children are unknowingly developing mathematics skills, language uency and even an understanding of chemical reactions.

A typical day at Stellar Minds is having a loose plan for the session but focused on following the child’s lead. Building blocks can morph into microphones, sparking opportunities for song creation and language development.

The curriculum, inspired by the prestigious early years foundation stage (EYFS) program, seamlessly integrates academics into play. A favorite activity of students is the playdoh volcano eruption, a fun task that subtly instills learning measuring, writing down and following instructions.

PEPSICO

PEPSICO Philippines led a beach clean-up at the Las Piñas-Paranaque Wetland Park as it recognize over 90 plastic waste collection sites in Cebu Province, Batangas, Cavite, Bulacan, Laguna, and Pasig run by waste-to-cash program Aling Tindera.

While alpha generation kids are born digital natives, Stellar Minds purposely keeps the children away from gadgets in their playdates. The learning hub believes in the power of experiential learning and fostering creativity through exploration. Its summer program focuses solely on weekend workshops, prioritizing this philosophy.

Creating a safe and inclusive space is paramount at Stellar Minds. Children are allowed to express their emotions freely. There’s no pressure to stop crying and their feelings are acknowledged with empathy.

were classmates at St. Paul in Pasig City and both went on to earn degrees at De La Salle University.

“This is more than just a business for us. We’re working together in this purposeful project. We realized that despite our age, we are quite tolerant to little children. In fact, we found it endearing to work with little kids,” Guillermo said, noting that both she and Dela Torre are turning 26 this year.

Dela Torre nds it more amusing than irritating when people doubt their capability to run a learning hub for toddlers. As young female entrepreneurs, they’ve faced scrutiny but many parents started to trust their capacity to teach.

Together with Rafoux’s PlaySchool, located within Greenpark Village in Pasig, Stellar Minds continuously re nes its curriculum, with a particular focus on integrating play-based learning for children with special needs. Stellar Minds also caters to toddlers in their Rockwell Center hub.

The hub deems inclusivity as a core value – fostering empathy and understanding between typical learners and special needs children. It prioritizes early intervention, working with therapists to personalize learning plans for each child.

Dela Torre and Guillermo’s message to parents is clear: play is more than just fun. It’s the foundation for academic, emotional and social development. At Stellar Minds, children experience the joy of play rst, and the transition to regular schooling becomes a natural progression.

“Let them discover the joy of learning through activities that ignite their curiosity about the world. These moments will lay the foundation for a lifelong love for learning,” Dela Torre said. Guillermo emphasized the need for parents to spend time with their kids, “as life goes by so fast.”

“We believe that if a child thrives in worksheets, we provide them with that. If they thrive elsewhere, we will cultivate it. At the end of the day, children are all human beings with their own gifts and strengths. We are here to unlock it and cultivate their strengths. Don’t underestimate the power of play,” she said. Their tagline, “Each child has a stellar mind,” perfectly captures their mission. Through play-based learning, Stellar Minds empowers toddlers to unlock their full potential and become lifelong learners.

CJL’S COACHING GREATNESS, LEGACY

(Conclusion)

COACH Joe Lipa throughout his remarkable coaching life has influenced those who’ve become an even bigger influence on a generation that genuinely loves the game of basketball.

Derived from whose respective achievements, be it a player, coach, executive, or sports journo, they have shaped the Filipino’s perception and opinion about the game, which is practiced in the country like it is a religion. The featured personalities in CJL’s memoir, whom he mentored barely scratch the iceberg tip as to the actual number of people the burly, Bobby Knight protege whose lives he has touched. In fact, during his almost half a century engagement, it can run in the thousands at least.

Being considered a trailblazer for the grassroots programs in the private school sector during the 1990s, as the founder of both the Xavier Basketball Academy (XBA) and the Ateneo Basketball School (ABS), a continuous wave of learners/athletes are produced on an annual basis under the foundational precepts CJL has established.

Then of course, his nationwide acclaim as the father of provincial basketball due to the tournament of varsity titlists he instituted in the early 2000s, has impacted the lives involved in these noble endeavors for the propagation of the sport. Aligned with CJL’s desire to instill the core values he stands for, above and beyond everything else, being kind to one another and being a better human being is where he places a premium.

They all stood on CJL’s broad shoulders of greatness, to provide them with a vantage point to see what their future versions would be like. The mentor sharing his vision to his ward is and always be priceless, just because Coach Joe Lipa sowed the seeds of tough love.

She fondly recalls weekends filled with back-to-back competitions, shuttling

between karatedo events in Alabang and basketball games in Quezon City, showcasing her remarkable dedication and talent across both sports.

During her college years, Erica continued to pursue her passion for basketball, joining Ateneo Lady Eagles team B in the Women’s Basketball League.

MAINTAINING the health of your dog's kidneys is crucial for their overall well-being, especially as they age. Kidney disease in dogs can present various challenges, but with proper care and nutrition, you can significantly improve your furry friend's quality of life.

Understanding Kidney Disease in Dogs

Kidney disease can manifest in various forms in dogs, ranging from acute to chronic conditions. Symptoms may include increased thirst and urination, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and mouth ulcers. Early detection and intervention are key to slowing down the progression of kidney disease and alleviating discomfort for your canine companion.

Dr. Jennifer Coates, DVM, says kidney diets play a crucial role in managing kidney disease in dogs. In her article, "What To Feed a Dog With Kidney Disease," in the PetMD website, she says that dogs with kidney disease often experience reduced appetite, nausea, and mouth ulcers, making it challenging to ensure adequate nutrition intake. In severe cases, a feeding tube may be necessary to provide essential nutrients.

Nutritional Guidelines for Dogs with Kidney Disease

A tailored kidney diet for dogs should address specific nutritional requirements to support kidney function and overall health. Dr. Coates outlines key considerations when selecting appropriate nutrition for dogs with kidney disease:

Protein Management: While dogs require protein for muscle maintenance and immune function, excessive protein intake can exacerbate symptoms of kidney disease. Opt for high-quality proteins with balanced essential amino acids to meet your dog's needs without overloading their kidneys.

PETS

Hydration and Water Content: Dogs with kidney disease are prone to dehydration, emphasizing the importance of adequate hydration. Opt for wet food with high water content to supplement your dog's fluid intake.

Supplements: Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fermentable fiber are beneficial supplements for supporting kidney health in dogs. These nutrients can reduce inflammation, neutralize free radicals, and aid in waste elimination.

Transitioning to a Kidney Diet

Transitioning your dog to a kidney diet requires careful planning and gradual adjustment. Dr. Coates recommends that you start by incorporating small portions of the new food into their existing diet and gradually

Phosphorus Regulation: Elevated phosphorus levels in the bloodstream can accelerate kidney damage. Choose food with controlled phosphorus content, favoring plant-based protein sources with lower phosphorus levels.

FOR many dog owners, sharing food with their furry companions is a common practice. Most pet owners would try to find additions to their pet’s diet in terms of taste or nutritional value. Eggs are staple ingredients in many households. Though frequently met with questions regarding its safety and benefits for dogs, eggs can be a healthy addition to their diet.

“Eggs are good for dogs as they provide an excellent source of fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and protein,” said Dr. Hector Joy in “Can Dogs Eat Eggs?” published in the Pet MD website. “Essentially the entire egg, including the eggshell, can be nutritious for dogs,” added Dr. Joy.

The Nutritional Benefits of Eggs for Dogs

Eggs are high in nutritional value, which extends to canine diets as well. They are a great source of protein, containing all the essential amino acids required by dogs for optimal health. The high protein content helps support muscle development and repair, making eggs an excellent dietary addition especially for active dogs. According to Dr. Joy, beyond protein, eggs are rich in the following nutrients that are beneficial for dogs:

- Vitamins: Eggs contain several vitamins such as Vitamin A, B12, and riboflavin, all of which play crucial roles in maintaining healthy skin, proper nerve function, and good vision.

- Minerals: They are a good source of iron, selenium, and fatty acids, which contribute to a healthy coat, improved cognition, and overall cell function.

- Choline: This essential nutrient aids in brain development and liver function, and is particularly abundant in eggs.

Potential Risks of Feeding Eggs to Dogs

While eggs are generally safe for dogs, there are a few risks that should be considered:

- Salmonella: Raw eggs may carry salmonella bacteria, which can lead to food poisoning in both dogs and humans. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy.

increase the ratio over a two-week period.

In general, high-quality kidney diets for dogs typically have a nutrient profile that aligns with the following guidelines:

Nutrient Grams/1000 kcal

Protein 31-41

Phosphorus 0.5-0.8

Sodium 0.4-1.2

EPA and DHA 0.4-1.2

Locating this information regarding dog food may be challenging, as it is not always readily available on labels or manufacturer websites. If you encounter difficulty obtaining these details, consult with your veterinarian for assistance in selecting a suitable kidney diet tailored to your dog's specific requirements.

Maintaining Kidney Health: Practical Tips

In addition to dietary modifications, several

- Biotin Deficiency: Egg whites contain avidin, a substance that interferes with the absorption of biotin (vitamin B7). While it is rare, excessive consumption of raw egg whites could potentially lead to a biotin deficiency, which manifests in skin and coat issues in dogs.

- Allergic Reactions: Some dogs might be allergic to eggs. If you notice symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as itching, swelling, or gastrointestinal upset, it is best to remove eggs from their diet and consult a veterinarian.

How to Safely Include Eggs in Your Dog’s Diet

Considering the potential risks and benefits,

eggs can be a healthy addition to your dog’s diet if introduced properly:

1. Cooking is Crucial: Always cook eggs before feeding them to your dog. Cooking not only destroys the avidin that could cause biotin deficiency but also kills any harmful bacteria. Scrambled or boiled eggs are simple, safe options.

2. Start Small: When introducing eggs to your dog's diet, start with small amounts to monitor how they react, particularly if they have a sensitive stomach or are prone to allergies.

3. Moderation is Key: As with any treat or dietary supplement, eggs should not constitute a large portion of your dog's diet. They are best used as an occasional treat or a supplement to

lifestyle factors can contribute to maintaining kidney health in dogs. Nutravet, a reputable source for pet health information, in their article, "Top Tips to Maintain Kidney Health in Pets," offers the following recommendations:

Proper Dental Care: Periodontal disease can increase the risk of kidney problems in dogs. Regular teeth brushing and dental cleanings can help prevent oral health issues.

Stress Reduction: Minimize stressors in your dog's environment, as stress can affect appetite and water intake, impacting kidney health.

Toxin Avoidance: Identify and eliminate potential toxins from your dog's surroundings, including toxic food (e.g., chocolate, grapes), household chemicals, and plants.

Regular Veterinary Check-ups: Schedule routine veterinary visits to monitor your dog's overall health and receive personalized recommendations for their care.

4. Consult Your Veterinarian: Before adding eggs to your dog's diet, especially if your dog has specific health issues or dietary needs, it is advisable to consult with a veterinarian.

Can dogs eat eggshells?

Eggshells can be a source of calcium, which is vital for bone health. However, they should be ground into a fine powder to avoid choking hazards and digestive issues. Again, consult with your vet before introducing eggshells to your dog's diet.

How often can dogs eat eggs?

This largely depends on the dog’s size, activity level, and overall diet. Generally, a couple of eggs per week should suffice for an averagesized dog.

Yes, puppies can eat cooked eggs, and they provide a nutritious boost for growing dogs. However, portion control is crucial to avoid any digestive upset.

Eggs can be a healthy and tasty addition to your dog's diet when fed correctly. They offer high-quality protein and other beneficial nutrients, which can contribute to your dog's overall health when included in moderation. Cooking eggs thoroughly and starting with small portions will help minimize potential health risks, making them a safe treat for most dogs. As always, when in doubt, consult your veterinarian to ensure that you're providing meals that are tailored to your dog's specific health needs and dietary requirements. MThe initiative started back in November 2023 and finally culminated in its National Salamuch Crew Day on Wednesday, April 17.

At the launch, McDonald’s Philippines deployed 10 IG-worthy walls in select Metro Manila stores, as well as a Virtual Padlet wall for online thank-you notes.

“Nakakatuwa po na mabasa ‘yung mga results or ‘yung mga thank-you messages that we found across the different touchpoints from the walls to the boxes to the online Padlet,” said Adi Hernandez, Assistant Vice President for Corporate Relations & Impact, McDonald’s Philippines.

Spreading the love through notes, McDonald’s Philippines further sustained the campaign by delivering 100 dropboxes for collecting goods at various stores in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in 2024’s first quarter.

CRA INGS

CDONALD’S Philippines has supersized its employee experience with a monthslong program known as “Salamuch Crew,” both a literal and figurative way of saying thank you to its workforce.

Filipinos. However, here’s the scoop: Many are skipping the goodness of ice cream to cool down either because they’re lactose-intolerant or their lifestyles just call for more nutritious and more ethical alternatives.

This is what Japanese food manufacturer Glico with its Almond Koka brand and homegrown business Gelato Manila aim to address, as both believe that finding equally delicious and healthy ice cream must be a “nosweat” job for Filipinos. Glico’s Almond Koka is the bestselling almond milk in Japan, boasting a superior taste and top-notch nutrition from its Vitamin E content that is 100 percent of the daily requirement. Whipping up some plant-based coolness with Almond Koka is Philippines’ premium gelateria, Gelato Manila. Co-founded by world-renowned gelato maker Chef Zarah Manikan, the brand is known for its expertise

heartwarming stories about how a crew member made their day, or simple acts done by our crew that made their McDonald’s visit even more special,” Hernandez added.

Finally, the restaurant chain kept the party going with a nationwide celebration on April 17 to culminate “Salamuch Crew” efforts. Here, its crew enjoyed treats, free food, lots of prizes, and other fun stuff in store through dedicated mini-parties.

A million thanks

According to McDonald’s Philippines, its latest initiative is simply its “responsibility” to reward the employees who made its aggressive growth possible. The fast food giant opened 50 stores locally in 2023, a figure it hopes to top with 60 new locations annually in 2024 and beyond.

Finishing last year with 740 stores all over the country, McDonald's Philippines has since documented over 60,000 employees, of which 59,000 alone are crew. “Of course, with more stores that are opening means there are more people that need to run them. Therefore, we are

opening more employment opportunities for young Filipinos, especially for the crew,” Hernandez said.

Speaking of “young Filipinos,” an overwhelming portion of the McDonald’s Philippines family consists of Gen Zs at 95 percent.

“Because they are Gen Z, these are working students. They balance the challenges of school life while working. There’s so much to be thankful for all their hard work,” Hernandez said.

In turn, the company wants to say “Salamuch” to its crew, especially by giving its clientele base the same opportunity to show their appreciation.

Just as significant, according to Hernandez, is the habit of making one’s appreciation become felt across the McDonald’s Philippines family.

“It is important internally that we are able to build a culture of gratitude among the workforce. Meaning crew saying thank you to fellow crew. Managers saying thank you to fellow managers. Again, to encourage or have that culture of gratitude and really uplifting the morale to have a better employee experience inside the stores,” she said.

line of gelato. It’s made with fresh ripe mangoes churned with Almond Koka Original for a vibrant-tasting healthy treat. On the other hand, Almond Mantikilya is a roasted almond butter gelato that has a bolder and nuttier flavor from the Almond Koka Unsweetened. It truly captivates Filipinos’ fondness for sweet indulgence with a surprising twist: it’s actually low in sugar. Nothing puts anyone in a better mood than a scoop of good chocolate gelato. So completing the trifecta is Kokoa, which has the decadence of deep and rich chocolate from the finest cocoa and Almond Koka Chocolate. This flavor not only soothes the soul but also remains a healthy way to conquer a scorching day. The Pinoy plant-based gelato will be available as a sampler set of all three flavors for only P450 until June 2024 at www.gelatomanila.com and in selected One World Deli stores. A JOURNEY THROUGH THE MAGIC OF SONGWRITING

SINGER-SONGWRITER

Denise finds herself at the intersection of creativity and fulfillment. While she’s known for crafting hits for some of the industry’s biggest names, hearing her own voice singing her compositions on the airwaves is an entirely different thrill.

“It’s a great honor to collaborate with the industry’s biggest names, but hearing my own voice is a unique experience,” Trisha shared with Manila Standard Entertainment Trisha’s songwriting journey has led her to compose charttopping tunes for renowned artists like Regine Velasquez, Pops Fernandez, and Belle Mariano, among others. Despite her success, her primary goal remains simple: to entertain and touch the lives of her listeners.

“It doesn’t matter if only one person listens to my songs; as long as I can touch that person’s life, then that’s great fulfillment for me as a music artist,” she expressed. Trisha’s musical path began unexpectedly. Originally envisioning herself as a chef, she found her true passion at 11 years old when she picked up a guitar and started writing songs. This newfound talent opened doors to life-changing opportunities, ultimately steering her toward a music career.

“When I started writing my own songs, I fell in love with it, and that’s what I pursued through college. I also joined songwriting competitions until I landed my first published song for Janella Salvador’s debut album,” Trisha shared.

As a recording artist, Trisha has released several tracks, including “Mahalaga” from the soundtrack of Between Maybes In 2021, she launched her debut album titled Piece of the Puzzle featuring singles like “Liliwanag,” “Ika’y Mamahalin,” and “Mamahalin.” Last year, Tri

WHENEVER lunchtime rolls around while someone is in the middle of a business meeting or engaged in their tasks for the day, they often have to leave their tables to go somewhere else to eat, putting their work on hold and possibly affecting their productivity.

Recognizing this, Hilton Manila has recently introduced Campus, an innovative concept that combines a co-working space with a dining experience.

Operating within the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant Kusina Sea Kitchens, Campus provides guests access to important tools that can help them in their work such as computer workstations, high-speed internet, and power outlets while also allowing them to indulge in the delicious food from the various cuisines served in its buffet.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Standard, Hilton Manila General Manager John Lucas recounted the idea behind the innovative concept.

“We all know that when you attend a conference or when you attend a meeting, a lot of your networking and a lot of your communication is done on a coffee break [or on a] lunch break. So we’re providing a space and an environment where the customers feel comfortable to chat and engage not just in the meeting

SM SUPERMALLS solidified its dedication to sustainability during last month’s Earth Hour, extending beyond the symbolic lights-off with engaging activities that empowered young people and the public to embrace eco-friendly practices.

On March 23, a total of 85 SM malls nationwide, including SM City Clark and SM City Cebu, participated in the annual Global Lights Switch Off by reducing energy usage by 50 percent and turning off mall signages and lighting in key areas. But SM’s commitment went a step further.

At SM North EDSA, K-Pop fans used their lightsticks for illumination during Earth Hour, while participating in eco-friendly pre-fan activities like a “Plastic Waste Collection Idol Challenge.” Similarly, customers at SM Lanang and SM City Grand Central unplugged and enjoyed acoustic sessions and fan gatherings.

SM Malls promoted sustainability beyond the event. The SM Store offered “Green Retail Finds,” and ACE Hardware showcased solar light solutions. Customers were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly habits through practical tips and resource conservation initiatives.

SM City San Mateo and SM City Marikina provided dedicated waste collection bins for plastic and e-waste disposal, promoting responsible waste management throughout the year.

During the Earth Hour, SM Supermalls, alongside its social responsibility arm SM Cares, empowered Filipinos to go beyond a symbolic gesture. By fostering a spirit of collective action and providing practical solutions, SM aims to create a lasting impact on energy conservation and climate change awareness. SM Cares is the heart of SM Supermalls’ social responsibility efforts. It spearheads programs that promote sustainability and community development, encompassing initiatives for Women and Breastfeeding

room, but outside of that as well,” said Lucas.

In the Campus workspace, guests will be able to focus on their collaborative work as there is a designated space for meetings that they can avail for their team. There are also various areas with ergonomic seating that individuals can utilize for their work tasks.

Its interior design will also help guests get into a productive state with its well-lit space adorned with pleasant designs such as a large mural made by Conrad National Marketing Office Trainee Simonne Gale Dacanay

“We genuinely believe [that] this is quite a unique proposition and there’s not much other meeting opportunities like this around town so we’re pleased with what we’ve done and we genuinely think it’s going to be a great success,” said Lucas.

Guests can utilize Campus’ operations during weekdays from 12:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and be able to choose from Kusina Sea Kitchens’ buffet spread that features Filipino, Western, Asian, Continental, and Indian cuisines for P2,500 per person.
