PRESIDENT Marcos arrived in Manila early Sunday morning, confident that his trilateral meeting in Washington with US President Joe Biden and Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, from whom he secured support for the country's development plan, will “change the dynamic” in the region amid China’s aggressive moves.

“It is going to change the dynamic that we have been seeing in the region, in ASEAN, in Asia, around the South China Sea and certainly I think for the better,” the President said in a press conference shortly after his arrival.

He said the leaders of US and Japan vowed to pour billions of dollars for the development and maintenance of critical industries like semiconductors and the creation of clean energy in the country.

US President Joe Biden is sourcing $128 million (P7.24 billion) to execute projects for Enhance Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites in the Philippines, Malacañang disclosed late Saturday.

“President Biden’s new pleasant request seeks 128 million dollars to execute 36 projects and enhance defense cooperation agreement size and that would more than double the amount that we’ve invested in EDCA infrastructure,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told President Marcos, according to Malacañang.

Malacañang said Austin relayed this during his meeting with President Marcos at the Pentagon, a day after Mr. Marcos’ trilateral meeting with Biden and Japan Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in Washington.

The US defense chief said both countries invested significant time and resources to address shared security challenges.

Trilateral meet opens ‘new chapter’

INTERNATIONAL think tank Stratbase ADR Institute sees the historic trilateral summit among the Philippines, US, and Japan as a “new chapter in strengthening the enduring bond among these three nations across various areas of cooperation.”

Stratbase President Dindo Manhit made this statement hours after President Marcos met with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Washington.

“I’m a great believer in coalition and alliances,” the President said. This is why, he added, it is essential to conduct a trilateral agreement between the three countries.

The plane carrying the President landed at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City at 3:03 a.m.

In the Chief Executive’s arrival remarks, Marcos said his counterparts declared their support for the infrastructure development and connectivity in the Philippines through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI).

He said the two leaders also favored the Philippines’ plans to implement the Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN),

The Stratbase ADR Institute supports the alignment of interests in safeguarding regional stability, upholding international law, and promoting eco-

workforce development for the semiconductor industry, and capacity-building in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, as well as the country’s membership in the Minerals Security Partnership Forum.

“We also exchanged views on a number of regional security issues of mutual concern. I took the opportunity to update President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida on the latest developments in the South China Sea, including the recent incident at Ayungin Shoal,” Mr. Marcos said.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Sunday congratulated President Marcos for achieving “a monumental diplomatic victory for the country and our people” with his historic trilateral meeting with Biden Kishida.

“On behalf of the entire House of Representatives, I extend my warmest congratulations to President Marcos Jr. for his remarkable achievement in securing a monumental diplomatic victory through the recent historic trilat-

‘TV Patrol’, weekend variant back on air on Channel 2 today

ABS-CBN’s flagship newscast “TV Patrol” and its weekend version, “TV Patrol Weekend,” will be back on Channel 2 starting tonight, April 15.

ABS-CBN announced on Saturday, April 13, that its flagship newscast will air on ALLTV, owned by tycoon Manny Villar. TV Patrol airs from Monday to Friday, 6:30 pm, with anchors Noli de Castro, Karen Davila, Bernadette Sembrano, and Henry Omaga Diaz. “This step is integral for the Philippines as it is confronted with increasingly aggressive and coercive actors in the West Philippine Sea,” Manhit said.

The trilateral summit comes amid China’s continued aggression in the West Philippine Sea, marked by the Chinese Coast Guard’s harassment of Philippine vessels in Manila’s exclusive

eral meeting with President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida," he said.

The leader of the 309-strong Congress said the outcome of the trilateral meeting holds immense importance for the Filipino people, for “our economy, and our national interest, particularly in the context of the West Philippine Sea.”

“The collaboration and dialogue fostered during this meeting pave the way for enhanced cooperation in addressing regional challenges, particularly in promoting maritime security, safeguarding our territorial integrity and improving the lives of the Filipino people," he said.

“This historic meeting signifies a strong and united commitment of the three nations to upholding the principles of international law and ensuring the freedom of navigation and overflight in the region which are vital in ensuring peace, stability and prosperity," he added.

Romualdez said the Joint Vision Statement of the three leaders issued during the historic summit manifested

Austin also reiterated Biden’s assurance on the US’ commitment to the defense of the Philippines, which he described as “ironclad.”

He said that "an armed attack on the Philippine Armed Forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the Pacific, including South China Sea" will invoke US defense commitments to the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT).

The EDCA is an accord signed between the Philippines and the US in 2014 that deepens the defense cooperation of the MDT.

In 2016, the Philippines and the US agreed on five initial sites on which both sides will construct facilities and preposition equipment.

The selection of the EDCA sites is in accordance with the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Strategic Basing Plan.

The identified sites are Philippine military bases to be further developed based on the strategic requirements for the basing and development of the AFP.

under the EDCA. The AFP said the annual mutual defense board meeting led by AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner, Jr. and US Indo-Pacific Command Commander Admiral John Aquilino had "fruitful discussions."

Brawner and Aquilino wanted to speed up the completion of EDCA projects and place 63 more on top of the 32 programs under the agreement.

"The meeting is the culminating activity of the PH-US planning cycle that assessed previous activities and set out over 500 bilateral engagements for 2024 to include exercises and highlevel exchanges," the statement read.

These exchanges, AFP said, would include security cooperation, strategies on strengthening maritime security, information sharing, among others.

“It signifies our commitment to further strengthen our cooperation, ensuring that both militaries are equipped and well-prepared to respond to evolving security challenges," Brawner said.

Aside from this, Brawner and Aquilino reaffirmed the two nations' commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty and stressed the importance of a "free and open" IndoPacific region aligned on a rules-based international order. Vince Lopez

In October of the same year, ABSCBN pulled off its return to free television via Brother Eddie Villanueva’s A2Z. This paved the way for TV Patrol’s comeback later on. The flagship newscast only returned to free television via A2Z in January 2022.

ABS-CBN said viewers can still watch the newscasts on A2Z, on cable through Kapamilya Channel, ANC, and Teleradyo Serbisyo, and on radio via DWPM. After the National Telecommunications Commission ordered ABS-CBN to stop its television and radio operations, the channel went off-air on May 5, 2020, right after TV Patrol’s airing. The media giant was shut down in the first few years of the administration of then-president Rodrigo Duterte. Only two days later, on May 7, 2020, TV Patrol aired online through ABS-CBN’s website, its official Facebook page, and YouTube channel, and through its content platform iWant, and on ANC.

Cop to sue ‘fake’ niece for using EDSA busway

A RANKING official of the Philippine National Police will file charges against a woman who reportedly introduced herself as his niece after enforcers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority flagged her down for illegally using the Edsa bus lane on Thursday.

In a statement on Sunday, PNP Director for Logistics Maj. Gen. Mario Reyes said he is already consulting his lawyers for the filing of appropriate charges against the busway violator.

“Any attempt to exploit the name or reputation of a law enforcement officer for personal gain or to avoid accountability is utterly unacceptable and undermines the integrity of our organization. The PNP enforces the law without fear or favor," Reyes added. The police general appealed to the public to refrain from engaging in such "deceptive practices and to respect the authority of law enforcement officers."

"I also urge concerned agencies to conduct a show cause order and thorough investigation and perhaps file usurpation of authority against that person," Reyes said. When an MMDA enforcer asked for her license, the woman said she is a niece of Reyes, working for ISAFP, and involved in the preparation of the "Balikatan" military exercises.

“It's crucial to ascertain the truth if indeed the Duterte administration struck such a deal with China," he said. "This isn't just about conflicting narratives. It's about upholding integrity and accountability.”

ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro also demanded full disclosure of the Duterte-Xi agreement.

“Now that Duterte has finally admitted to entering a secret deal with China, it is imperative that Congress hear House Resolution 1216 that we have filed as early as last year," she said. “We must know all that there is to this unpatriotic deal, and the ones responsible should be held accountable. According to Mody Floranda, president of the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston), both groups will hold rallies today in front of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Quezon City and Mendiola in Manila.

He said they are confident that the strike will paralyze public transportation in Metro Manila.

Floranda said transport groups in Bicol Region, Iloilo, Cebu, Davao, General Santos, Bacolod and Baguio City will also join the strike.

President Marcos had earlier announced that the April 30 deadline for the franchise consolidation under the PUVMP would no longer be extended.

SeaLight Director Ray Powell said the Philippine vessels stopped for eight hours, some 35 nautical miles from Luzon's coast and the edge of China’s nine-dash line.

Mr. Marcos has assured that the program will not be a burden to the drivers and operators because of the government subsidy for modern PUVs.

As of March this year, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said 80 percent of PUVs in the country have complied with the consolidation policy.

In the National Capital Region, he said the MMC has coordinated with NCRPO chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez to ensure order in the streets.

Zamora said they want to protect jeepney drivers and operators who will not join the strike from harassment. Under the agreement, both agencies will also cooperate to stop the entry of controlled precursors and essential chemicals (CPECs) smuggled, transported, and transshipped into Philippine territory.

Both parties have also agreed to hold regular meetings to discuss operational matters, the current status of the programs, and the formulation of necessary strategies to facilitate the accomplishments of the MOA’s objectives; and exchange best practices and knowledge on drug smuggling, transportation, and transshipment.

The activity was witnessed by key officials and personnel from both government agencies with the main signatories PDEA Director General, Undersecretary Moro Virgilio Lazo and PCG Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.

Villanueva: Teach enterprise education

SENATOR Joel Villanueva on Sunday said that he believes enterprise-based education and training will boost the government’s effort to address the country’s unemployment rate.

“Let our jobseekers learn directly from industry experts. The involvement of our industry partners is crucial in ensuring that skills and competencies align with their jobs,” he said.

Villanueva said lawmakers are formulating a comprehensive set of labor policies targeting both the demand and supply sides of the labor market. He noted that this will effectively address the persistent issue of unemployment and underemployment.

Aside from ensuring there is a job waiting for every Filipino, Villanueva said: “We must also guarantee the capability of our workers to address the needs of the industry. “

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported a decrease in the unemployment rate from 4.5% or 2.15 million in January 2024 to 3.5% or 1.8 million in February 2024, which is lower from 4.8 % or 2.47 million in February of the previous year.

(AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. visited the wake of naval aviators Lt. Jan Kyle Borres and Ens. Izzah Taccad at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on April 12.

Brawner’s call came a day after the helicopter crash in Cavite City that killed Borres and Taccad.

The AFP chief extended sympathies to the families of the fallen pilots and assured them of the military’s full support for the grieving families.

Emphasizing the paramount importance of safety, the Philippine Navy reaffirmed its dedication to strict aircraft inspections and maintenance protocols to ensure airworthiness of the planes.

The Navy also vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Vice President Sara Duterte also paid her respects to Borres and Taccad on Apr. 13.

Duterte expressed her deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families and to the Philippine Navy for the loss of the two naval aviators. She acknowledged their dedicated service and ultimate sacrifice to the nation.

AGRI party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee on Sunday lauded the approval of the National Food Authority Council to procure local palay at higher prices to beef up the country’s rice buffer stock.

“The administration’s measure to boost

the country’s rice buffer stock by buying local palay at a higher price is what the farmers — our food security soldiers — need now more than ever as they struggle with the effects of El Niño and low income. Spending more to boost their productivity is the right way to go,” Lee said. According to the NFA Council, the

approved increase in the procurement price of rice would give them flexibility to compete with private traders and help rice farmers boost their income. The NFA’s adjusted buying price for dry and clean local palay is P23 to P30 per kilo from the previous P19 to P23 per kilo, while wet and fresh palay will be purchased at P17

JAPHUSAU?

WELCOME to the newest “security” alliance – JAPHUSAU, forged “trilaterally” after earlier bilateral declarations in Canberra. Days before, the navies of the four nations conducted joint drills in the SCS, and our coast guard immediately welcomed the announcement made by Marcos, Biden and Kishida in DC, enshrining maritime cooperation to “coordinate collective responses” in the face of tensions in the disputed seas.

“Upping the ante versus China” is how a senior defense analyst of US think-tank Rand Corporation describes it.

“It carries some risk, but there does not seem to be any viable alternatives if Beijing continues to claim much of Manila’s EEZ…but a big problem is whether China’s maritime expansion continues or stops,” said Derek Grossman in an interview with Nikkei Asia.

For better or for worse, the Philippines has chosen sides in the looming SinoAmerican confrontation, between the withering hegemon of the previous 100 years to the one aspiring to replace it.

In character, China recoils and calls the arrangement a “mini-NATO” in the Asia-Pacific, while Biden in the joint press conference at the White House repeated his country’s “iron-clad commitment” to the Philippines.

—“—

Forgive and forget is high up in the ‘moral’ pantheon of Filipino ethic

Is that “iron-clad commitment” binding upon Donald Trump?

Note that our Mutual Defense Treaty has many clauses that hedge on direct US confrontation with whoever we are in conflict with. They can calibrate their response, while we think “iron-clad” is automatic.

China bristled at the reference to Taiwan, which it has always maintained as an “internal affair” and the basis for the whole world save for 13 countries to accept “One-China.”

Meanwhile too, talks between Japan and our country are on its final stages, where Japanese “self-defense forces” will soon conduct joint exercises with our AFP, another “visiting forces” agreement similar to what we have with the US of A.

For Beijing, it is clear we have taken sides, and there is no turning back, at least for as long as Marcos Jr. is the chief architect of our foreign policy, as our Constitution states.

The Japan which the Chinese will never forget for its inhuman “Rape of Nan-

jing” where civilians were cruelly massacred during the Sino-Japanese War is now in cahoots with a small country, then US territory, which it occupied during the Second World War, and upon which the same US of A lobbed two atomic bombs to force immediate surrender.

And for what are we now being drawn into another US quarrel?

For Philippine EEZ-defined atolls and Japan’s fear that China will eventually interdict “freedom of navigation” in the China Sea.

“Eeez a puzzlement” to Chinese leaders, mired in Confucian philosophy with a history of non-invasive involvement with its neighbors and the world.

What China does not realize is that few Filipinos have a sense of history. Forgetfulness is a trait for a people raised in the Roman Catholic ethic of “forgiveness.”

Yesterday’s enemies have become today’s “reliable” friends.

Besides, geopolitics is not too different from plain politics, where today’s enemies can be tomorrow’s friends. Just take a look at our trapos, as they change political colors very easily.

Never mind the atrocities of the Japanese occupation.

Never mind the carpet bombing of Manila, once described as the “Pearl of the Orient” by American liberation forces, leaving it a pile of rubble, its destruction second only to Warsaw’s by an imminently defeated Germany against advancing Soviet forces.

Never mind the thousands who were bayonetted to death by retreating Japanese forces when MacArthur belatedly “returned” to “liberate” us.

And never mind too that our heroic resistance fighters against the Japanese enemies of our occupier America were treated shabbily by “mother” America after the war, given crumbs for their heroism.

Never mind Balangiga, Bud Dajo, and the massacre of our ancestors when imperial America took over imperial Spain.

Forgive and forget is high up in the “moral” pantheon of Filipino ethic.

Other countries likely think of us as “masochists” who would endure any suffering, any humiliation, just as internally, we choose some of the least, some of the worst among us, to lead us.

On the domestic front, look at how Napoles is still in jail, while we have returned some of her accomplices to positions of power, even as we have not dug deep enough to charge the other “silent” accomplices.

JAPHUSAU now, wonder what happens after China and Taiwan are re-unified? A new Fil-Sino alliance?

I remember an old song, which begins with the question “Where have all the flowers gone?” and ends with “When will (we) ever learn?”.

Lift Constitutional restriction to foreign investments, businesses

IN THIS interconnected world, the influx of foreign direct investments is pivotal for economic acceleration and development, especially for economies in transition like the Philippines.

These investments bring technology, management expertise, and access to global markets, highlighting the pressing need for constitutional amendments.

For years, Charter Change or the more colloquially term “Cha-cha,” aimed at lifting economic restrictions to encourage foreign direct investments and boost foreign participation, has stirred impassioned debates on the merits of modifying the 1987 Constitution, underscoring the crucial role of national policies and international frameworks in fostering economic growth through FDIs.

Amidst all the well-publicized pro and anti-Cha-cha debates, findings of the latest Pulse Asia survey commissioned by international think tank Stratbase Institute, 64 percent of Filipinos believe an increase in high quality jobs with high salaries and better benefits will result from the removal of restrictions against foreign investors or businesses in our Constitution, while 56 percent believe that Services to

stakeholders/customers will be better.

The survey also reveals the red flags that are driving away investors like complicated rules and regulations, bureaucratic ‘red tape,’ constantly disruptive changes in government policies and regulations (56 percent), and restrictive rules on foreign ownership which is highly seen as a significant factor (55 percent).

During a recent consultative session on Charter Change organized by Democracy Watch Philippines, Stratbase Institute President, Prof. Victar Andres “Dindo” Manhit emphasized the need to create a business environment that enables growth and innovation through market-friendly public policies, transparency, and good governance to encourage more investments in the country.

“Investments are a crucial tool in increasing a nation’s productivity while also generating employment, providing income security, and alleviating other economic hardships being experienced by millions of Filipinos,” Manhit said. Private sector investments, from local or foreign sources, are the prime economic drivers of any economy.

sist this is necessary in view of prevailing tensions in the South China Sea that could lead to war.

The key to preparing for the possibility of any outbreak of war, however, is modernizing the armed forces and building alliances with friendly nations to thwart armed aggression.

We don’t know about that; all we know is that those students forced to march in formation for hours every week with officers breathing down their necks and shouting or cursing at them to obey instructions or else be subjected to disciplinary actions aren’t likely to love the Philippines or willing to die for their country because of abusive or corrupt ROTC officers.

Besides, mandatory ROTC would

AS THE darkness envelops and whispers of conspiracy reverberate through the silent night, a bone-chilling saga of deceit unfurls, cloaking the Philippines in a shroud of doubt and trepidation.

The recent reports of illicit activities attributed to China paint a harrowing picture of subterfuge and manipulation, threatening the very fabric of national security.

But amidst the darkness, a beacon of vigilance and unity must shine forth to ward off the encroaching darkness.

In the first chapter of this sinister saga, the Chinese Embassy brazenly denies allegations of underhanded dealings, dismissing them as mere fabrications spun by an “invisible hand” seeking to sow discord between nations.

Yet, the evidence speaks volumes, as reports of online recruitment efforts trace back to the very heart of China itself.

The notion of “sleeper cells” lurking within Philippine borders sends shivers down the spine, raising fears of infiltration and espionage.

But the plot thickens as the web of deceit ensnares even the most unsuspecting of institutions.

The Philippine Retirement Authority’s lax vetting of Chinese nationals, coupled with the alarming discovery of POGO workers holding retirees’ visas, paints a grim picture of vulnerability.

ecosystem of linked businesses and livelihood opportunities are created which multiplies the value of direct investment because of the manpower, services, and supply chains required by its operations.

Before we become distracted by the midterm elections, our legislators need to act on Cha-cha ASAP

While the Philippines is showing encouraging post-pandemic economic growth numbers at a rate of 6 percent this year (2024 Asian Development Outlook) and accelerating to 6.2 percent in 2025, experts are seeing new opportunities that would be critical to the country’s economic future that will be sorely missed, again, if the investment barriers in the constitution are not dismantled. There are emerging sectors seen by economic experts that have great growth potential. These are being driven by the global

mean an added economic burden on students, especially those from poor and disadvantaged families, who would have to buy uniforms and spend for food and transportation to ROTC training sites.

Rather than ram mandatory ROTC down the throats of our young people, it should be made optional.

Republic Act 9163, or the National Service Training Program Act of 2001, allowed students to choose from the following service components: ROTC, Literacy Training Service, and Civil Welfare Training Service.

Before these, there was the Youth Civic Action Program under which students were encouraged to engage in community development projects, including taking part in massive tree-planting programs in deforested areas as one way to prevent flooding from destructive typhoons that hit the country every year.

This program should be expanded to help the nation cope with climate change. Filipino youths have better things to do than being forced to undergo military drills under the searing tropical heat in summer and heavy downpour and floods during the rainy season so they can enhance their skills and knowledge in various fields of endeavor and contribute to sustained and meaningful nation-building.

The sinister web

of deception and espionage

As the tendrils of Chinese influence creep ever closer, the specter of national security looms large, casting a shadow of doubt over the integrity of our defenses.

In the second chapter, the Armed Forces of the Philippines sound the alarm, branding the online recruitment efforts as a dire national security concern.

—“—

Every Filipino must remain vigilant, guarding against the subtle tendrils of deception that seek to ensnare us

The potential for cyber espionage sends shockwaves through the ranks, as fears of internal data breaches loom large.

What begins as a seemingly innocuous scheme soon unravels into a tangled web of deceit and treachery, threatening to unravel the very fabric of our nation’s defenses.

But amidst the chaos, there is hope.

The call for vigilance rings out like a clarion call in the night, urging Filipinos to stand united against the forces of decep-

trend and fast pace of innovations towards digital transformation, and the urgency to find a planetary solution to climate change.

In the power and energy sector, the ongoing moratorium on new coal fired power plants and refocus towards renewable energy sources can spark an RE construction boom that will require thousands of manpower and construction related services.

Building the plants and facilities of a new green power industry will support jobs in construction, transportation, logistics, a plethora of equipment suppliers and support services.

The rising demand for electric vehicles for cleaner and cheaper commuting options and building developments investing in solar energy panels to lower their electricity costs.

Since this is an archipelagic country, all these investments to green technologies must happen in every inhabited island.

Another opportunity of global scale is the exponential acceleration in the demand for critical minerals required to manufacture all these environmentally friendly digital technologies.

tion and manipulation.

It is only through a united front that we can hope to weather the storm brewing on the horizon, for in unity lies strength.

To deter such machinations from outside forces, stringent measures must be implemented.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines must bolster their cybersecurity protocols, fortifying their defenses against the looming threat of cyber espionage.

Enhanced cooperation with international partners can provide valuable intelligence and support in combating the insidious influence of foreign actors.

But perhaps the most potent weapon in our arsenal is vigilance itself.

Every Filipino must remain vigilant, guarding against the subtle tendrils of deception that seek to ensnare us.

By remaining ever watchful and united in purpose, we can thwart the machinations of those who seek to undermine our sovereignty and security.

In the darkened corridors of power, where shadows dance and whispers of conspiracy linger, the fate of the nation hangs in the balance.

But through unity, vigilance, and unwavering resolve, we can emerge from the shadows stronger than ever before. For in the face of adversity, it is the light of truth that will guide us through the darkest of nights.

Now is the time for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his administration to invest their political capital for what will be a historical policy reform legacy to cure the unresponsive provisions of the constitution that for decades rendered the country uncompetitive as an investment destination.

The current proposition of Constitutional amendments is not just about attracting foreign investment to the Philippines but about ensuring sustainable economic growth, sound expansion, and a new mindset in access to property rights.

Liberalizing the approach to international direct investment will redefine the country’s competitiveness and economic outlook.

We need an enabling Constitution that will effectively attract, instead of losing, opportunities for our people.

Before we become distracted by the midterm elections, our legislators need to act on Cha-cha ASAP.

It so happens the Philippines has significant untapped reserves of nickel, copper, chromite, and other metallic minerals believed to be valued at some US$ 1 trillion. It is evident lifting the economic restrictions to foreign investments in the 1987 Constitution will serve as a pivotal strategy for fostering sustainable economic growth.

Tehran: Retaliation now ‘concluded,’ warns Israel not to retaliate militarily

TEHRAN – Iran on Sunday urged Israel not to retaliate militarily to an unprecedented attack overnight, which Tehran presented as a justified response to a strike that destroyed its consulate building in Damascus earlier this month.

“The matter can be deemed concluded,” Iran’s mission to the United Nations said in a post on X just a few hours after the start of the operation late Saturday.

“However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” the Iranian mission warned.

No Iranian leaders have spoken out to justify the attack, which marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israeli territory.

Late Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps announced that they had launched “dozens of drones and missiles” towards military sites on Israeli territory.

“Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus,” the Iranian mission to the UN said.

The attack, according to the mission, was “conducted on the strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to legitimate defense.”

However Israel’s army said it had shot 99 percent of the drones and missiles with the help of the United States and other allies, declaring Iran’s attack “foiled”. AFP

Iranians ‘foiled’ amid fears of wider conflict

JERUSALEM –

Iran’s unprecedented overnight attack on Israel has been “foiled,” the Israeli military said Sunday, with hundreds of missiles

and drones intercepted with the help of the United States and allies.

The attack which began late Saturday marks a major escalation of the longrunning covert war between the regional foes, and comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war between Israel and

Trump fans brave chill to hear their Republican ‘martyr’ speak before trial

SCHNECKSVILLE – Donald

Trump’s mounting legal woes don’t appear to be hurting him among his followers -- and in some cases are simply making his partisans irate and more ardent in their support.

Gathered in the small Pennsylvania town of Schnecksville, his impassioned supporters said Saturday they believe Trump will come out of his criminal trial -- which begins this week -- stronger than ever.

Though Trump was not due to address the crowd until later in the evening, a crowd began to gather early Saturday morning.

American flags and “Trump 2024” banners fluttered in a chilly wind and light rain in the town, located in the key swing state of Pennsylvania that Trump won in 2016 but lost to Joe Biden in 2020.

“They are crucifying Donald Trump. He’s being turned into a martyr. And the Democrats think they’re winning. All they’re doing is making us really, really angry,” says Edward Young, a 64-year-old from Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Young, an actor who also works in

finance, said that he once was a centrist casting ballots on the merits of each candidate. But the barrage of legal cases against Trump has changed everything for him.

Whether Trump is convicted won’t make any difference to Randy Thomas, 57, who also drove from New Jersey to attend the rally. “It’s a bunch of hate from the Democrats. they’re scared of him,” Thomas told AFP.

Thomas says he’ll take to the streets if Trump is sentenced to prison. “But it ain’t gonna happen, it’s not gonna happen.”

Another supporter, who gave his name only as Ted, came to the rally with his daughter, the first time they had been to a Trump event. “It’s important to show support to him, but also to show that the justice system is corrupt and we see it and we’re not going to let anyone fool us about it,” says Ted, a corporate executive. Hours before the rally, Trump used similar language on his Truth Social platform, attacking the judge who will oversee his trial in New York as “totally conflicted and corrupt.” AFP

Thousands gather in streets of Iran, show support for drone, missile attack on Israel

TEHRAN – Thousands of Iranians took to the streets of Iran early Sunday in a show of support for the unprecedented drone and missile attack under way against arch foe Israel.

“Death to Israel!” and “Death to America!” chanted demonstrators in Tehran’s Palestine Square shortly after the Revolutionary Guards announced the launch of Operation Honest Promise.

A mural saying “the next slap is fiercer” was unveiled in the square where a huge banner has hung for days calling, in Hebrew, for Israelis to “take shelter.”

On Sunday, demonstrators waved Iranian and Palestinian national flags alongside banners reading “God’s victory is near.”

Iran’s attack came in retaliation for an April 1 strike that levelled the five-story consular annexe of the Iranian embassy in Damascus and killed seven Revolutionary Guards, two of them generals.

Tehran has since vowed to avenge the strike which was widely blamed on Israel.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pledged that the “evil (Is-

raeli) regime will be punished.”

Iranian media described the attack on Israel as “complex” as it also involved Iranian allies in Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq. “This attack did not come from Iran only, and this regime (Israel) is being punished from four directions,” the Tasnim news agency said. A large crowd of demonstrators gathered outside the British embassy in Tehran.

Supporters of the retaliatory attack also demonstrated in Iran’s third largest city Isfahan where Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one of the generals killed in the Damascus strike, is buried. Demonstrators also gathered near the grave in the southern city of Kerman of prominent Guards commander Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a 2020 US drone strike in Baghdad. Tehran had earlier appealed to Washington to keep out of its conflict with Israel but Iranian hopes were dashed after a Pentagon official confirmed that US forces were shooting down Israelbound drones. Seriously injured in October, the burly 30-year-old is a double amputee with two prosthetic arms.

More and more Ukrainian soldiers like him are losing limbs in a war that has dragged into a third year, and being forced to adjust to life in a country with few disabled facilities.

“I have new arms and I need to get used to it. And you have to realize that this is for the rest of your life. This is your whole future,” Kucherenko told AFP, the sleeves of his army uniform rolled up.

The Protez Foundation, a US non-profit, fitted Kucherenko

with bionic prosthetic arms after a fundraising campaign.

Made by a Ukrainian startup called Esper, they have chargeable batteries and are operated via muscles in his stumps.

Kucherenko was visiting Protez Foundation’s Kyiv clinic for adjustments because the prosthetics had become loose.

This is normal due to loss of muscle mass, explained Jim Henrichsen, the US specialist who fitted his arms.

Kucherenko served in the army from 2015 to 2017, and then rejoined when Russia invaded in 2022.

Iran warns US: ‘Stay away’ from conflict

TEHRAN – Iran warned the United States Sunday to “stay away” from its conflict with Israel after Tehran launched a drone and missile attack in retaliation for a deadly strike on its Damascus consulate.

“Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus,” Iran’s United Nations mission said on X.

“Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” it warned. “It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the US MUST STAY AWAY!”

It said it hoped its action to punish the strike on its diplomatic mission would lead to no furher escalation and “the matter can be deemed concluded.”

But any Iranian hopes that Israel would be left to defend itself alone were swiftly dashed, with a Pentagon official confirming that US forces were shooting down Israel-bound drones and Britain saying it stood ready to.

Biden vows ‘ironclad’ support for Israel as US downs Iran drones

WASHINGTON, DC – US President Joe Biden promised “ironclad” support for Israel against attacks by Iran on Saturday, (Sunday in Manila) with American forces shooting down Iranian drones amid a spiraling crisis in the Middle East. Biden cut short a weekend trip to the Delaware coast and held an emergency meeting at the White House with his top national security officials after Iran launched its unprecedented attack.

“I just met with my national security team for an update on Iran’s attacks against Israel. Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,” Biden said on X. He posted a picture of the meeting in the wood-paneled White House Situation Room with officials including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and CIA Director Bill Burns.

Batangas, Parañaque win in MPBL

BATANGAS and Parañaque warded off their opponents on Saturday to gain a share of the lead in the MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Sixth Season at the Batangas City Coliseum.

The Batangas City Tanduay Rum Masters repulsed the Iloilo United Royals, 71-64, while the Parañaque Patriots ambushed the South Cotabato Warriors, 73-64, for their second straight win in as many starts in the elimination round of the 30-team regional league.

Earlier, Manila SV Batang Sampaloc wasted a 12-point spread but held on to beat Bulacan, 75-72.

With Iloilo threatening, 61-64, following a triple by Mark Nonoy, Batangas responded with a 7-point run, courtesy of Cedric Ablaza, Dela Virgen and Dawn Ochea to seal the outcome.

Ablaza wound up with 18 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals to earn best player honors. No other Rum Master scored in twin digits with Juneric Baloria contributing 9 points and Levi Hernandez, Dela Virgen and Jeckster Apinan chipping in 8 points each.

Iloilo got 14 points and 6 assists from Mark Nonoy, 13 points and 4 rebounds from Gwyne Capacio, and 10 points plus 4 rebounds from CJ Cansino.

The Parañaque Patriots caught the favored Warriors napping to surge ahead, 40-25, and never looked back through the efforts of Jielo Razon, Mark Yee, Paolo Castro and Philip Manalang.

Razon finished with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists while homegrown icon Paolo Castro posted 16 points. It was Yee, however, who took best player honors following a 13-point, 18-rebound, 4-assist output. Manalang also did his share with 8 points, 10 assists and 4 rebounds.

South Cotabato, which debuted with a 105-65 rout of Imus on April 10, got 12 points and 6 rebounds from John Wilson and 11 points plus 6 rebounds from Mark Cruz.

The Manila Stars clustered eight points, capped by a DJ Mitchell triple, to pull away, 73-61, with 2 minutes and 19 seconds to go.

The Bulacan Kuyas countered with a 9-point run to threaten at 70-73 with still 19.4 seconds left. Enzo Navarro, however, calmly canned two free throws to seal Manila’s first win in two games with 13.9 ticks remaining. Manila, backed by Strong Group Athletics, was led by Carl Bryan Cruz with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. He was backed by Mitchell with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, Pao Javelona with 9 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds, and Ahmad Didat Hanapi with 9 points. Navarro tallied 5 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds.

The MPBL goes to the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Monday with a triple bill pitting Imus against Quezon City at 4 p.m., Marikina against Pampanga at 6 p.m., and Muntinlupa against Rizal at 8 p.m.

AUGUSTA—Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler battled through a back-nine shootout to seize a onestroke lead over Collin Morikawa after Saturday’s third round of the Masters while Tiger Woods endured a nightmare collapse.

Scheffler’s remarkable shotmaking under pressure, including a clutch eight-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole to shoot a oneunder par 71 and stand on seven-under 209, capped a wild round at Augusta National. Scheffler, the 2022 Masters winner, lost the lead with a double-bogey at 10, recaptured it with an eagle at 13 and birdied two of the last four holes, success prompting fist-pumps from the typically mellow Texan. “The putts were important to me. I try to feed off the positive energy of seeing the ball go in,” Scheffler said. “Did a good job of staying patient, had the eagle at 13 and finished well.”

Scheffler made four birdies, three bogeys, an eagle and a double-bogey to hold off US compatriot Morikawa, a two-time major winner who fired a 69 to stand on 210.

“You give yourself a chance with 18 holes left, that’s all you can really do and everything that you practice for,” Morikawa said. “It’s going to be a grind, and I’m looking forward to that.

American Max Homa was third on 211 after a 73 with Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, making his first major appearance, fourth on 212.

Oddsmakers’ darling Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, could join Woods as the only players to win the Masters twice while world number one.

Scheffler, holed out a 32-yard birdie chip at the first hole, sank a 34-foot birdie putt at the third before a bogey at the par-3 fourth. AFP

Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open champion, holed out from 77 yards at the 18th for birdie to shoot 75 and stand fifth on 213, four shots back. “Gave myself a chance,” DeChambeau said. “If I can make some putts tomorrow, I think I can have a good opportunity.” Woods, a 15-time major winner, fired his worst-ever Masters round, a 10-over 82, to stand on 11-over 227 and stumble out of contention for a record-tying sixth green jacket and record top prize of $3.6 million. “I was not hitting it very good or putting well,” Woods said. “Just hit the ball in all the places that I know I shouldn’t hit it.”

This landmark event, presented by Megaworld and The Mactan Newtown, is highlighted by a strong professional lineup, including 2023 IM 70.3 Davao winner Filipe Azevedo of Portugal, and Denmark’s Daniel Bakkegard, a seasoned competitor with multiple titles.

On the women’s side, Australia’s Dimity-Lee Duke and Els Visser from the Netherlands head the field, bringing seasoned international experience to the competition organized by The IRONMAN Group.

Twelve titles are at stake in various age divisions. Also on tap in the event, supported by Lapu Lapu City, Municipality of Cordova, Cebu City, 2Go, Aboitiz Infracapital, CCLEX, Lightwater, OneSports+ on Cignal, the Philippine Star, Sante, Sportograf and Teresa Marble, are the relay all male and all female and the relay mixed. Displaying consistency on offense and defense, the University of Santo Tomas product earned her first PVL Press Corps Player of the Week nod for the period of April 9 to 13 in the flourishing professional league organized by Sports Vision. Trust was paramount for the 25-year-old hitter and the Crossovers, who trailed Cignal for much of each set before rallying to victory.

That trust paired with Chery Tiggo’s collective effort keyed in its four-game win streak, most of which came against powerhouse teams defending champion Creamline, Petro Gazz, and Cignal.

Chery Tiggo will wrap up its elims campaign against PLDT, Akari, and also-ran Galeries Tower. “Syempre po back to training, lahat pagtatrabahuhan,” said Laure. “So itong mga nakikita niyo, result na ‘to. Pero sa training din kami nagpupukpukan, dun namin tinatama ‘yung mga mali namin, ‘yung mga pagkukulang namin, para pagdating sa laro madali na lang, sabi nga ni Coach Kungfu.”

NEW recruit Omar Gordon and team skipper Leyton Buenaventura lifted

Far Eastern University to the Red Bull Half Court Manila Qualifiers men’s division crown after turning back Team Elite, 12-11, in overtime Saturday evening at the Gameville Ball Park in Mandaluyong.

Two baskets from the high-leaping Gordon and skipper Leyton Buenaventura in extra time broke the 10-all deadlock of the 10-minute regulation play, handing the men’s championship title for the Tams.

The Tams, along with teammates Rojan Montemayor and Cliford Taboctaboc, and Team Elite now head to the national finals of the tournament on April 27, along with their respective semifinal foes. “We just got to play smart. We can’t let that to happen anymore, making bad mistakes. We got to make it right,” said Buenaventura, after the Tams allowed Adrian Soguilon to convert a final basket for Team Elite in the dying seconds of regulation.

Team Elite, composed of Jayvee Bautista, Adrian Suguilon, Robert Altarejos and Bryan Nikko Lazo, fought their way into the finals with the Tams, after they got past Team Kamalayan, 21-20.

FEU arranged a showdown with Team Elite after they disposed of Coach J Hoops Academy (CJHA), 9-5.

The ballers of CJHA are Justine Repalda, JC Tira, Abel Buenaobra and Jovic Pachoro, while Team Kamalayan is bannered by Alvin Moreno, with team members Ervin Valderama, AJ Jawili and John Jeremy Macapagal

In the women’s division, former national player Camille Claro showed the way for NZ Creamery as they handed Adamson Falcons Blue a 13-6 beating in the finals.

The finalists from Manila Qualifiers will join the teams from the Cebu Qualifiers, the Davao Qualifiers, the Manila Qualifiers and the Wild Card.

All finalists will have chances to make it to the Red Bull Half Court World Final, which will be held in New York in October.

Hotshots maul Fuel Masters, secure 2nd straight triumph

ANDY Barroca unloaded 27 points for the Magnolia Timplados Hotshots, whose last quarter onslaught allowed them shake off the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, 107-93, in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Ian Sangalang added 23 points for the Hotshots, who pulled off backto-back wins to gain a 3-2 win-loss record.

Jio Jalalon knocked in 13 points as the Hotshots improved to seventh spot.

The Hotshot took advantage of two turnovers and two missed shots of the Fuel Masters in the last 8:07 to move out of range. With the Hotshots slightly ahead, 79-77, Abu Tratter banged in six points

during a 12-2 run which put them ahead, 91-79.

RJ Jazul topscored with 21 points for the Fuel Masters, who dropped behind at 2-5. Coach Chito Victolero said the Hotshots were outworked in the first half by the Fuel Masters, who scored 39 points, mostly off Jazul, who had 11 points in the second period. “We allowed them to score 39 points in the second quarter. That’s not us. But thanks to this guy, Andy Barroca, we got back,” said Victolero. The Fuel Masters were ahead by 11, 55-44, at halftime, because of Jazul’s big plays.

But the Hotshots managed to build an 18-point edge, 103-85, in the fourth, off Barroca’s trey in the final period 3:41.

Jose Rizal University, 25-13, 25-12, 25-20, on Sunday to reclaim the solo lead and extend its streak to 32 spanning four years in NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.

With CSB coach Jerry Yee shuffling his players anew, none of the Lady Blazers finish in double figures with Michelle Gamit and Wielyn Estoque leading the way with eight points apiece.

It was the three-peat feat-seeking champion’s third win in a row this season and 32nd in all counting the pair of magnificent 11-game title sweeps the last two years and the seven in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yee though stressed they’re not into counting wins and streaks.

“We try not to mind those, we don’t even count,” said Yee.

What he’s looking at though is how his team is developing.

“Kulang pa sa execution, dami pa kulang, dami pa aayusin. Hopefully, maayos naman,” he said.

Except for team captain Jessa Dorog and their two liberos, all the players fielded by Yee scored at least a point.

Yee attributed the constant player rotation to the transition period his team is undergoing as four of his starters—Jade Gentapa, Cloanne Mondonedo, Michelle Gamit and Gayle Pascual—are graduating.

LAUREN Hoffman, refreshed by the warm and sunny weather, once again toppled a Philippine national record with training partner Angel Frank, this time at the Duke Invitational Athletics meet on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in Durham, North Carolina.

The 25-year-old Hoffman, who now seeks to claim the national marks, sprinted to a silver-medal finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, finishing behind Duke University bet Skyla Wilson in 13.41 seconds. “It was good! Weather was warm and sunny which was nice, I had 3 events today which is more than I’m used to. But had a lot of fun. And I had some good takeaways,” said Hoffman in an interview with the Manila Standard. Hoffman, who also won a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles, fought off a slight headwind of 0.8 meter/second that barely slowed her down, allowing her to blow away the 17-year-old national mark of Sheena Atilano. Atilano used to own the Philip-

pine mark with a time of 13.65 seconds, established in the 2007 Asian Grand Prix in India.

Wilson, who has the same college alma mater with Hoffman, claimed the gold medal in 13.36 seconds, while Sydni McMillan, an East Carolina campaigner, got the bronze in 13.69 seconds.

In the women’s 400-meter hurdles, Hoffman snatched the gold medal in 56 seconds, ahead of Riley Knebes (57.93) and Wilson (59.52).

So far, Hoffman has smashed three Philippine marks, ripping the women’s 400-meter hurdles’ time last March and the indoor women’s 400-meter clocking twice last February.

Last March, the 5’6” Hoffman earned the gold medal in recordbreaking fashion in the women’s 400-meter hurdles of the annual Hurricane Collegiate Invitational at Cobb Stadium where she ran in 56.39 seconds

Hoffman went below the record done by Robyn Brown in the 2022 Southeast Asian Games in 56.44 seconds for the bronze medal.

THE National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation (NHMFC) and China Banking Corp. signed an agreement to explore opportunities to increase liquidity in the housing market.

“This endeavor is to deepen the relationship between NHMFC and Chinabank,” NHMFC president Tobias said.

NHMFC, one of the key shelter agencies under the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, is mandated to provide liquidity in the housing sector through the secondary mortgage market. Tobias signed the agreement with Chinabank executives and other officials of NHMFC.

Among those who attended the event from Chinabank were institutional banking segment head Lilian Yu, consumer banking segment head Aloysius Alday and vice president Antonio Jose Dominguez. Monde Nissin allots P7.21b for 2024 capex

NOODLE and snack food maker

Monde Nissin Corp. said it earmarked P7.21 billion for 2024 capital expenditures, nearly double the P3.64 billion it spent in 2023.

Monde Nissin said this year’s capital expenditures would focus on building capacity and capability of its Asia-Pacific branded food and beverage (APAC BFB), which posted a 12.6-percent increase in sales to P65.9 billion.

Around P6.21 billion will be spent by APAC BFB out of the programmed capex this year, while only P1 billion was budgeted for its struggling alternative meats business.

Monde Nissin chief executive officer Henry Soesanto said the capex spending would be funded through operating cash-flow.

Soesanto said the company has several expansion projects for its food and beverage business and is completing a new production plant in Davao that will expand its bakery and biscuit.

“We are working on some project that we cannot divulge at this point. But a lot of is in our bakery business, like biscuits and cakes. We need to catch up capacity in order for us to serve the volumes that our customers are demanding,” Soesanto said.

Monde Nissin last week reported that its board approved a move to reallocate P228.8 million of its unused initial public offering (IPO) proceeds as capex funds this year for the company’s APAC-BFB segment. Meanwhile, Soesanto said Monde Nissin was also expecting a low single-digit revenue growth in the first quarter for its APAC-BFB business.

Stocks seen moving downward this week

PHILIPPINE stocks are expected to move sideways with a downward bias this week amid the lack of positive news or catalysts.

Analysts said the string of negative news here and abroad, the higher-than-expected US inflation rate, potential lower Philippine economic growth and delay in rate cuts, were forcing investors to remain on the sidelines and foreign funds to cash in

on previous gains.

“The probability of an extended downtrend past 6,500 should warrant extra caution in trades,” online brokerage firm 2TradeAsia.com said.

“On this front, any stabilization above 6,600 level could open windows for short term range trading, at least while he broader market rationalizes capital cost outlook for the remainder of 2024,” it said.

Analysts said market sentiment was being weighed down by the recent upward adjustment in Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ inflation target to 4 percent on worsening upside risks and the higher US inflation rate that could delay cuts in interest rates to the latter

part of 2024 or early next year. High inflation and interest rates could also affect corporate earnings in terms of reduced margins due to higher cost.

The 30-company Philippine Stock Exchange index dropped 1.28 percent to close at 6,659.29 on Friday, while the broader all-shares index lost 1.06 percent to 3,517.40 last week.

Average daily value turnover declined to P5.92 billion from previous week’s average of P7 billion as financial markets were closed for two days last week.

Foreign selling also accelerated to P1.72 billion from previous week’s P517.5 million.

DITO expects revenues to hit P20b this year

DITO Telecommunity Corp. aims to double its revenues in 2024, driven by growing number of mobile and broadband subscribers, an executive said over the weekend.

DITO chief commercial officer Evelyn Jimenez said revenues would likely reach P20 billion, up from P11 billion in 2023. The company also anticipates to achieve positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) by 2025.

Jimenez said DITO was targeting 15 to 16 million subscribers this year, up from the current subscriber base of 10.4 million.

DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Alfredo Pascual underscored the rapid expansion of the country’s aerospace sector.

The recent Philippine delegation to the trilateral meeting with the United States and Japan cited the success of Collins Aerospace Philippines, a division of (RTX) and a Philippine Economic Zone Authority-registered company as a testament to the industry’s successful operation and growth. Collins Aerospace, which has operation in Batangas, has been a leading global aerospace company.

Initially focused on manufacturing aircraft interior components, it has diversified to engineering, oxygen systems manufacturing and aircraft components repair.

The company began manufacturing aircraft seats for Boeing, Airbus and Embraer in 2023, and its first shipment of seats to Airbus started in January 2024.

Pascual outlined attractive investment incentives and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the defense industry. He listed recent legislative developments aimed at enhancing the nation’s self-reliance posture.

“We offer a compelling suite of incentives and are dedicated to facilitating collaboration between the private sector and the government. This partnership aims to strengthen our national defense capabilities while bolstering our aerospace industry,” said Pascual.

The company expects about 300,000 to 400,000 subscribers for home broadband this year from the current 100,000 subscribers.

DITO expects to pass the final mandatory performance audit by the National Telecommunications Commission by July.

The company also said it was on track to hitting a national population coverage of 84 percent by July from the current 82 percent.

Udenna’s food unit expands store network

EIGHT8ATE Holdings Inc., the food and beverage (F&B) arm of the Udenna Group, is expanding its store network in 2024.

Eight8ate president and chief executive Joseph Garcia said its flagship brands Conti’s Bakeshop and Restaurant and Wendy’s Philippines would continue to build more stores, increasing its presence in Luzon market before expanding to the Visayas and Mindanao.

“Although for Conti’s, we are slowing down the expansion of new stores to focus on an ongoing store improvement campaign,” he said over the weekend.

Eight8ate said it would renovate eight stores for 2024. It plans to open six provincial branches, to end 2024 with 80 branches.

The company said it is spending an average of P3 million per store.

Garcia said the facelifting campaign for Conti’s is not necessarily a rebranding effort as “the improvements will be minimal since we are not touching the kitchen”. He said Wendy’s would be actively pursuing expansion with 15 new branches this year, increasing the total number of stores to 90.

Eight8ate also operates Good Mood Food, an affordable food choices restaurant concept and the fast-rising coffee brand Better Coffee.

The company is exploring options for possible partnership with master franchisers overseas, after it concluded an extensive market research in the US.

The MB rendered its opinion on 143 LGU proposed borrowings totaling P45 billion. The MB issuances were for 125 requests received in the second half of 2023 and 18 requests received in first semester of 2023.

The remaining 34 requests received in the semester under review are awaiting the submission of complete information and/or documentary

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said over the weekend it lifted the temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds from Belgium and France after both countries were cleared by the World Animal Health Organization of Animal Health as bird flu-free. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. issued on April 11, 2024 two separate memorandum orders to lift the ban on products like poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen. The DA received reports that there were no additional bird flu outbreaks in Belgium since Feb. 21, 2024 and in France since Feb. 24, 2024.

Belgium and France announced outbreaks of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 strain, prompting the DA to issue the import bans to protect the multibillion-peso poultry industry and ensure food safety. The lifting of the ban in the two European countries followed similar actions by the DA on American poultry.

The DA recalled import restrictions on the states of Iowa and Minnesota in March 2024, but it maintained the poultry ban on the states of California and Ohio. Iowa and Minnesota poultry were refused entry starting 2023 due to AI outbreak in the two US states.

The US continues to be a major source of poultry products for the Philippines with total exports of poultry meat and products reaching $180.5 million in 2023.

Corio Generation deployed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) instruments for its wind projects in Guimaras and Cavite that will remain in operation for at least 12 months.

LiDARs, designed to withstand harsh coastal environment, will collect detailed information on the wind resources of the two prospective wind farms.

“The successful deployment of LiDARs represents a major milestone achievement as we continue to develop our projects off the cost of

the Philippines. Our campaign to measure the wind resources confirms the progress we have made in bringing forward offshore wind projects for upcoming auctions in the country,” Corio Generation development director for the Philippines Alma Roxas-Aguila said in a statement. The company, whose headquarters is in London, has five projects in the pipeline totaling 3 gigawatts (GW) off the coasts of Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro, IIoilo and Guimaras under wind energy service contract granted by the Department of Energy.

Venezuela ‘strongly’ rejects new oil concession off Guyana

CARACAS—Venezuela on Saturday said it “strongly” rejects a new oil concession Guyana has granted to US giant ExxonMobil in waters disputed by the two South American neighbors. ExxonMobil announced Friday that it received the green light from Guyana for exploitation in the Stabroek block, an offshore area with huge deposits.

The project, known as Whiptail and with an estimated investment of $12.7 billion, “will bring the country’s production capacity to approximately 1.3 million barrels per day,” ExxonMobil president Liam Mallon said in the statement. ExxonMobil said production at Whiptail would likely not come online until in 2027.

Venezuela “strongly rejects the illegal oil production license granted by... Guyana to oil companies in the Stabroek Block,” Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said in a statement. “Any concession that Guyana grants or intends to grant in the areas in question is unacceptable, since it violates international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty,” he added. The discovery of oil in the disputed waters in 2015 intensified the already long-standing boundary dispute between Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela claims ownership over the Essequibo region, which has been administered by Guyana for over a century and makes up two-thirds of its territory. AFP

THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said over the weekend it imposed P540-million fines against parties involved in the alleged unauthorized and fraudulent trading of unissued shares of Abra Mining and Industrial Corp. The SEC’s Market and Securities Regulation Department (MSRD) said in a decision it found Abra’s directors, officers, transfer agent and certain stockholders guilty of violating Section 26 of Republic Act No. 8799, or the Securities Regulation Code (SRC), and Section 61 of Republic Act No. 11232, or the Revised Corporation Code (RCC). It said it found Abra president James Beloy, corporate secretary Amelia Beloy, directors Conde Claro Venus, Carmelo Rafael Tansengco, Premy Ann Beloy and Joel Beloy and former director Belinda Gaskell guilty of unauthorized and fraudulent trading of unissued and unlisted shares from 2015 to 2019.

The MRSD said in a separate decision it found the company’s transfer agent, Asian Transfer & Registry Corp. and its president Arline Adeva, corporate secretary Premy Ann and assistant corporate secretary Joseph Acuesta guilty of violating Sections 26 and 52.1 of the SRC, and Section 36.4.3.2 of the 2015 implementing rules and regulations of the SRC.

Section 52.1 of the SRC provides that a transfer agent should make, keep and preserve records, furnish such copies thereof and make such reports, as the SEC may prescribe. The SRC rules further require the transfer agent to make available any or all of its books and record upon the commission’s request.

The MSRD also held several stockholders of Abra Mining liable for violations of Section 26 of the SRC.

The case stemmed from discrepancies in Abra shares lodged with Philippine Depositary and Trust Corp. (PDTC), which were in excess of the number of listed, registered, issued and subscribed shares submitted in the company’s filings with the SEC.

Solon asks DOE to speed up microgrid plan

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian asked the Department of Energy over the weekend to fast-track the development of microgrids to meet the country’s goal of total electrification.

Gatchalian said the development of microgrids is necessary for the government to achieve full electrification of unserved and underserved areas.

“Microgrids are a critical infrastructure for the electrification of our rural communities. The Department of Energy should undertake steps to further expedite the development of microgrids to help propel the electrification of unserved and underserved areas,” said Gatchalian, the principal author of Republic Act No. 11646 or the Microgrid Systems Act of 2022.

The Department of Energy (DOE) concluded the first round of competitive selection process (CSP) and awarded the development of microgrid systems in eight unserved areas in Cebu, Quezon and Palawan to the Maharlika Consortium.

The consortium will provide electricity services to the said areas 24/7. The DOE targets to conduct a second round of bidding within the year.

It establishes a diversified portfolio of investments in the local and global financial markets and in other assets that promote the commercial, developmental and strategic objectives of the Fund.

A delegation from McLarty and Ankura is expected to visit the Philippines to further discuss partnerships on the said areas.

DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual welcomed PwC’s plan during a meeting with PWC Philippines chairman and senior partner Roderick Danao and PwC managing partner and platform leader principal and acceleration centers leader Hari Kumar.

The committee will be co-chaired by Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar. They are joined by the secretaries of Environment and Natural Resources, Budget and Management, Social Welfare and Development, Finance, Justice and the Office of the Solicitor General. The Philippine National Railways (PNR) was designated as the secretariat of the committee.

“The DOE must persist in its efforts to advocate for the implementation of microgrids in areas that lack access to reliable power and are underserved,” Gatchalian said. Gatchalian cited data from the 2020 survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) where 27.6 porcent or 479,029 households in missionary areas were still without electricity.

ERC eyes phased power rate hike in off-grid areas

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is studying the staggered implementation of the National Power Corp.’s plan (NPC) to increase power rates in off-grid areas by more than P1 per kilowatt-hour. “I’m sure NPC is aware that the commission’s ruling on their petition may include a modified mode of implementation, such as staggered or phased-in increases. This will all be a part of the ERC evaluation,” ERC chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta said. The ERC has been conducting nationwide hearings to discuss the NPC’s petition for the revised subsidized approved generation rates (SAGR) for consumers residing in off-grid areas.

The ERC said the hearings aim to provide an opportunity for the general public to ask questions, raise concerns and clarifications on the petition to adjust the SAGR and for the ERC to listen to the concerns of residents in remote and isolated areas served by the NPC Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG).

The NPC said during the hearings that aside from the different economic parameters used in its proposed reduction in the universal charge on missionary electrification (UCME), the application highlights the proposed increase in SAGR which would have an impact on electricity consumers being served by NPC’s SPUG. Sun, sea, and sailing at Club Punta Fuego

FOR the third straight year in the post-pandemic era, the 21st Club Punta Fuego Regatta recently sailed off in Nasugbu Bay in Batangas to welcome the summer season and strengthen sport sailing in the area.

Atrevidos, helmed by Eduardo Legarda of the Punta Fuego Yacht Club fleet, pulled a major surprise to edge the perennial contestants and top the Ocean Multihull Class in the final standings. The two-day tourney which drew top

corporate honchos and sailing enthusiasts, featured the challenging Fortune Island race, Round-the-Island, and coastal races to Hamilo Coast to the Twin Island.

Amidst favorable winds, Twin Popsies skippered by Dylan Tantuico ruled the waves and copped first place on Day 1. The second day saw Atrevidos with a come-from-behind first place win with its adept strategies, thus clinching the overall victory.

Rounding up the winning circle are Twin Popsies, Cariño of Monchu Garcia, and Captain Napoleon of Napoleon Paterakis, who settled for second, third, and fourth places, respectively.

As one of the longest-running in the country, the sailfest is presented by Philippine InterIsland Sailing Foundation (Phinsaf) and Club

Punta Fuego, and co-presented by property conglomerate Landco Pacific Corp. According to Club Punta Fuego general manager Edgar Krohn, the annual event bolsters its position as the sports and recreational sailing haven of southern Luzon.

The Club has also served as the starting point of the Busuanga Cup for the past eight years, which is part of the BPI Private Wealth Signature Yacht Series.

The Regatta is also supported by Broadwater Marine, MG Grand Hotel, Anya Resorts Tagaytay, Niyama Wellness by AHG, AWC, Marina del Sol, German Club Manila, Teresa Marble, Wine Drop, Unioil, Spritz, Dusit Thani – Lubi Plantation Resort, DusitD2, Active Boating & Watersports, and Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.

NEXT week marks the entry of another luxury hotel in our metropolis – Lanson Place Mall of Asia Manila will officially open its doors to the public, which will surely delight discerning travelers who embrace the finer things in life especially when they are away from home.

The Lanson Place brand, which came about in 1995, is a subsidiary of Wing Tai Properties, a publicly listed company in Hong Kong. The brand proudly banners its personalized approach to service, as its guests are pampered by the dedicated staff, while paying much attention to detail in providing the best experience, easily distinguishing it from similar establishments in the hospitality sector.

Lanson Place Mall of Asia Manila has 200 hotel rooms, and 150 serviced suites, and is owned by SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation. Its location gives it very easy access to the SMX Convention Center Manila, and extensive retail, food and beverage, and entertainment facilities.

When I saw the building in the early part of its construction, I immediately became curious as to what it had to offer guests. My curiosity was finally catered to when I got to stay in one of its suites during its soft opening. I enjoyed my stay to the max so I immediately booked a suite for my Seattle-based daughter and her family when they came to Manila for a visit. Its Cyan Modern Kitchen, on the third floor, is an all-day dining venue that serves modern interpretations of traditional international

prepared with fresh, seasonal, and sustainably sourced ingredients. This is where all guests enjoy their buffet breakfast daily. It also serves buffet lunch and buffet dinner. For those who prefer light meals, like I do, the restaurant offers an a la carte menu. Its location gives it a panoramic view of Manila Bay and the colorful esplanade alongside. Cyan also has an al fresco veranda for guests who want to enjoy the cool sea breeze while having their meal.

My favorite facility in the hotel is its Infinity Pool up on the roof deck on the 11th floor right after the Fitness Center. Because it offers a 360-degree view of the metropolis, naturally, it displays a panoramic view of Manila Bay

Guests were welcomed with a grand drumbeater performance, followed by a warm welcome from General Manager Stanley Lau Guests were then introduced to the Carcacoles Convention Center, a new 1,000-person venue with a scenic Davao Gulf view, ideal for large gatherings.

and its awesome, world-famous sunset. It has a bar that offers every cold drink or cocktail mix you can ever think of. I like swimming up there because I hardly feel the scorching sun, as the cool breeze from the sea continuously blows from every direction. There is one other facility for guests that I haven’t tried yet, which I plan to do next time I get the chance. Focus is a 24-hour comfortable workspace for busybodies who need some peace while working on some important office documents or projects. It has ample natural light during the day and bright incandescence at night making it easy for anybody who needs to focus on the details of what he or she wants to accomplish.

Right next to this area is Bytes, a grab-and-go station that offers snacks and coffee breaks, which is perfect for today’s busy executives or entrepreneurs who need to spend more time on work documents while seeing to it that their daily sustenance is being attended to. But what is really memorable about a stay at Lanson Place is its guestrooms. The contemporary design of its interiors, its stylish furnishings, and its functional layout make it very easy for guests to experience the warmth of home, while the relaxing view of the bay soothes the senses and lets any jaded traveler wind down to a stress-free environment.

I am so happy that we now have another bayside haven to add to our treasure trove of luxury hotels, the better to welcome more tourists to our country. When you get the chance to experience this affordable luxury, you’ll agree with me…Lanson Place is beautiful!
