eptember is here and the kids are back at school. For some parents, sending the little ones off for the first time was no doubt a heart wrenching yet proud moment. As for the parenting veterans, it is surely a relief knowing that for the next 10 months, the onus of keeping the offspring gainfully occupied has finally been lifted off their shoulders – aaaahhhhh! And lest we forget those incredibly brave individuals, who grind away at home schooling their little bundles of joy. I really do have an incredible amount of respect for the unbelievable patience and discipline required to accomplish this task without murdering the little men and women before the first week is through – my boys would never survive such an ordeal and I thank God for every school and teacher out there!

This is also the time of year that we extend a warm welcome to the many newcomers and hope your transition to our lovely oasis city has been a smooth and pleasant one. Al Ain is the best place in the UAE to enjoy family life with a multitude of sites to see. We thought of offering a map in this issue but decided instead to extend some sound and valuable FREE advice – invest in a reliable GPS! I am navigationally challenged and the thought of opening up a rather large map while cruising around Al Ain in search of my next meal or shopping extravaganza, gives me incredible surges of anxiety – besides maps kill trees and we all know the value of a tree in the Garden City! In keeping with the back to school theme, it is with great pleasure that we introduce to you our very own “ask the teacher” columnist, Sarah Wood. We like to refer to her as the “child whisperer”. Sarah comes to us from Brighton College and will be on hand in every issue of The Source to answer the many education and parenting related questions our readers may have during the course of the upcoming school year. Now get out there and enjoy the friendliest city in the UAE and don’t forget to grab a copy of The Source every two weeks to keep you company!

ASK THE DR. Hey Doc, I have had ovarian cysts for quite a while now and heard that they are very common. I had surgery for one of them as it grew to be 8x8 cm. It has been happening more frequently and doctors tell me there is nothing I can do about it except stay on painkillers. They tell me one of the reasons for excess cysts in my body is the lack of a uterus (I was born without a uterus). Is this true? And is there anything I can do to limit the amount of cysts I get? I am in pain almost every week.

Dear Reader, Thanks for sharing your concern. Ovarian cysts are common and, in fact, it is normal for women to have an ovarian cyst during their ovulatory cycle. However, some women develop cysts that are large and painful, and there are various treatments for these. Even for my own patients, I generally advocate for a second opinion whenever someone is dissatisfied with a particular treatment plan and it sounds like you may benefit from a second opinion. Umm Rashid, a 49-year-old Emirati mother from Ajman, has been honoured for being clam and deft in alarming situations Umm Rashid put out not one, but three fires in her home and didn’t resort to calling in the Civil Defence till she had extinguished them, Arabic newspaper ‘Al Bayan’ reported. Sharing her experience, Umm Rashid, said the first fire broke out in her oven. She says: “When I saw the flames I didn’t panic and acted with calm. I got a wet towel with water and covered the oven before the fire spread around the kitchen. In the second incident, she saved her daughter whose scarf had caught fire while she was cooking.“I immediately removed my daughter’s scarf and asked her not to panic and not to run, as more oxygen would help the fire spread to all parts of her body,” she says. Umm Rashid shares that the third fire broke out in the villa’s water pump and she immediately shut down the electrical mains to extinguish the fire. The General Directorate of Ajman Civil Defence honoured Umm Rashid in recognition of her courage. 10

The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) has discovered hundreds of new species of insects and plants on Jebel Hafeet and in its surrounding wadis in Al Ain, with many of the finds believed to be unique. The presence of these species in a mountainous environment with its abundance of valleys is significant. The discoveries have been made through the Abu Dhabi Terrestrial Baseline Survey, initiated by the EAD in 2012. The survey aims at collecting data about terrestrial biodiversity all year round. The programme has successfully documented hundreds of species of animals, insects, birds, reptiles and plants in the emirate of Abu Dhabi — many of them endangered. Dr Shaikha Salem Al Daheri, Executive Director of Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity

at the EAD, told Gulf News that the new discoveries have highlighted that Jebel Hafeet, one of the two highest mountains in the UAE, is a habitat teeming with life. The area “needs immediate protection to preserve the rich biodiversity of this unique ecosystem”, she said. Some of the vegetation, such as the Dwarf Palm, are unique to the area, she said. Endemic plant species in the local ecosystem include Caralluma and Acridocarpus, while rare species documented in the area include the Periploca. Some 238 species of invertebrates, which were earlier not known, have been recorded in Abu Dhabi in the last few years. A total of 320 insect species listed under 93 scientific families have so far been recorded in Jebel Hafeet.

WhatsApp crosses 600 million milestone

Mobile messaging app WhatsApp continues to grow by leaps and bounds. The Facebook-owned service is now servicing more than 600 million monthly active users according to a recent tweet from CEO Jan Koum. The executive also used the tweet to take a jab at some of his competitors by pointing out that active and registered user figures are very different types of numbers. Services like Kik and Line only report registered numbers which makes it tough to gauge just how popular they are at any given time. The SMS alternative was closing in on half a billion users when Facebook agreed to acquire the 2009 startup for a whopping $19 billion back in February. WhatsApp eventually reached that milestone in April meaning it only took four months to add an additional 100 million monthly active users. As TNW points out, there's still plenty of untapped potential within WhatsApp in terms of revenue. At present, the service is free to use for the first year. After that, users are required to pay $0.99 per year thereafter. Without introducing some additional source of revenue, the company really isn't getting the most out of its user base. Immediate examples of ways to generate more revenue include in-app advertising and gaming but these are areas that Koume isn't interested in. Of course, once Facebook's acquisition closes later this year, he may not have much say-so in the matter and you can bet the social networking giant will want to maximize revenue.

Inspirational Quotes on Education

“Ideally, what should be said to every child, repeatedly, throughout his or her school life is something like this: 'You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. You are being taught by people who have been able to accommodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. It is a self-perpetuating system. Those of you who are more robust and individual than others will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself — educating your own judgements. Those that stay must remember, always, and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this particular society.” – Doris Lessing

Getting the kids ready in the morning without ld ou “W u yo

hu

I

s this you more times than you’d like to admit; usually around 7:55 AM, five minutes before your kids have to leave for the bus, and one of them is still walking around looking for his math homework wearing one sock? Still, an occasional bit of nagging is better than a fullon meltdown every morning while trying to beg, cajole, and threaten the kids out the door (and half the time they still leave without their

backpacks).

It’s normal to get stressed during school mornings, but over the years -- and by going through the routine over and over with multiple kids – You should learn how to stay (mostly) calm and collected from the time you roll out of bed until slamming -- er, gently shutting -- the door behind the kids. If you haven’t already mastered mornings, then here are some ideas that should help: Stick to a routine. Fuzzy-brained kids (and moms) are not great at improvising. Create a school morning routine so that everyone knows what to expect. Kids should get dressed all the way to shoes before eating breakfast, so that afterward they can just brush their teeth and go. Play to your strengths. You know how some people work best under the pressure of a looming deadline, while others need lots of time to plan and think? Same goes for

the morning rush. If you fall into the former camp, don’t get the kids up super-early to let them ease into the day…instead, purposely limit the allotted time to exactly what they need to get dressed, eat, brush teeth, get on their gear and get out the door. Stay on your feet moving and directing, and they stay in motion until they’re on their way. When you get the kids up too early, on the other hand, you may lose track of time and they in turn will somehow lose track of their shoes or get lost in their bedrooms, and the whole thing falls apart. Maybe you do need lots of time in the morning to function well. Keep an open mind, and experiment with a few different strategies to see which works best for you. Breathe and look for perspective. Sometimes, when mornings get crazy, you will get kind

of crazy too. With a racing heart and elevated blood pressure, it’s easy to blow that forgotten lunch box or missed readinglog signature way out of proportion. It sounds simplistic, but it helps to simply take a few deep breaths and ask, “What’s the worst that could happen if….?” Most of the time there’s a relatively simple solution. For example, you could drop off the lunch box later, or your son could have hot lunch today. And most important of all, no child has ever failed to get into college because they lacked a signature on their secondgrade reading report. Reward yourself. Don’t try to eat your breakfast and drink your morning tea alongside the kids, because you will be rushing the ritual as opposed to enjoying it. Instead, sit and chat with the kids while they eat, manage the rest of the send-off, and then enjoy your tea and toast. It gives you something to look forward to while getting them out the door, and there’s nothing like sipping that cup of tea in a totally quiet house.

Father of education

S

ome days I feel like I’m raising a three year old and a seven year old girl. What I actually want to be doing is raising two girls who will one day be ready to turn eighteen. If the education I give my daughters is limited to making pretend pizza and paying for their piano lessons, I will have failed miserably.

While being fitted for a purple tiara, I began to mentally address this question. What role does a father have in a child’s education? This education isn’t just about checking homework at the end of the day. From the moment they open their eyes watching our every move, to the day they drive away as adults, what kind of education do we pass on to our children? School is a priority right now and there is an important education a father should be sharing with his maturing children. LIFE SKILLS Competition is not a bad word. Today it is sports and contest related. Tomorrow it is fighting for a good job and producing a better product. We need to teach our kids to win with humility and loose with dignity. Educate your children about the shackles

16

The Source

of debt. Even a three year old can learn how to build savings with coins. Teach kids independence by letting them make choices. Allow them to fail at many things. Encourage them to explore. And don’t fix the kids bike! Show them how to fix the bike. CHARACTER Children need to learn that life is not all about them. If your kids can learn to celebrate the success of others, they will discover what joy feels like. Show them what serving a neighbor looks like. Words are powerful. Watch out for the little lies we tell as parents. Teach your kids the value of integrity. We need to do a better job at showing our kids how to look people in the eye and properly greet one another. Then, teach kids that respect for others should not be earned, just given. Because no one is perfect, no one would ever be respected if we followed this rule. HARD WORK Love what you do. Every position and job has a purpose - even the burger flipper. Train your kids to do everything with excellence, not perfection. They should commit to something and put forth every effort possible to get it done. We hear the word “runner” a lot in this country. That is a great example of poor commitment. Finish what you start!

LOVE A great lesson to teach kids is never allowing others to dictate their actions. Our actions should be derived from who we are on the inside. I encourage you to read the book by Gary Chapman: The 5 Love Languages of Children. Discover how your child gives, receives, and interprets love. Finally fathers, show patience, gentleness, and faithfulness to your wife. You are the example of how they will treat their future spouse!

CHILD at heart Brighton College teacher gets ready to answer parenting posers

T

By J.J. Green

he Source is thrilled to have secured the services of a new columnist, Sarah Wood, the Brighton College Al Ain teacher who has quickly established herself as one of the most well-regarded Junior School teachers in the city. Every fortnight, Sarah will be offering readers of The Source her advice on how to offer young children the very best start in life. Welcome aboard, Sarah!

Who was your favourite teacher? No one forgets a great educator, and 26-year old Sarah Wood has created quite an impression amongst local parents and children since arriving in the Garden City a year ago to join the world class British independent school, Brighton College Al Ain. Miss Wood, who hails from Yorkshire, England, is a popular figure at Brighton, the new school that has got parents talking after it received the best inspection grading

The Source

ever awarded to an Al Ain school, and the highest ever rating for a new school in the Abu Dhabi emirate. So what is Sarah’s secret? Parents say it is her highly creative, energetic and unremitting drive to enthuse young children with a love of learning, with one delighted mother telling us “she has lit the flame of learning in my child.” “I was shaking like a leaf when I got the news,” beams Sarah as she recalls the day that she was selected ahead of over a hundred other candidates to take her place at Brighton College Al Ain. She continues: “Every British teacher dreams of the chance to work at a school like Brighton – it is the Manchester United of British education.” Once she had calmed her nerves, Sarah bade a fond farewell to her loved ones and headed out to the Middle East with a determination to prove herself worthy of the challenge. “I am passionate about Junior School education,” she whispers, “and make it my business to create lasting memories to inspire the young children that I teach.”

social & community forum

She adds: “When children are very young, the neural pathways in the brain are progressing at an amazing pace and a poor education at this tender age can have a lasting negative impact on their life chances as they grow up.” “Too many parents believe that education only becomes crucial when the children start senior school. This is a dreadful mistake – investing in your child’s education early is the best possible way to ensure that they have the brain capacity to succeed as they get older.” Watching Sarah in action, it is clear that her pupils are enthralled by her methods, whether sailing on the high seas on a pirate

ship, plunging into the world of dinosaurs or creating castles in the sky. Whilst a Sarah Wood lesson is always creative, however, the progress made her pupils reveals a serious and studied side to the ever-smiling educator. “What is remarkable about Sarah is her absolute commitment to considering the needs of every single child in her class,” remarks a colleague, “and this has resulted in some extraordinary gains for her pupils over the last year or so.”

So what does Sarah hope to achieve in her new column, Ask Sarah, which launches in the next edition of The Source? The youthful Year 1 teacher hesitates briefly, before fixing the interviewer with a determined gaze. “I am privileged to be working at a world class school and I got into education to help children,” she says, “so sharing all of the outstanding practice that I have learned at Brighton is the very least that I can do for Al Ain parents.” “I cannot wait to get started!”

“Her sunny demeanour and sense of fun mask an obsessive drive to give her pupils the best start in life that they could ever wish for.”

Too many parents believe that education only becomes crucial when the children start senior school. This is a dreadful mistake – investing in your child’s education early is the best possible way to ensure that they have the brain capacity to succeed as they get older.

Keeping children healthy in school

T

effective ways of staying healthy in and out of school. Remind your children to wash their hands before eating and after using the toilet. Teach them to soap their hands for as long as it takes to sing the “happy birthday” song twice.

he kids are back at school and it’s time once again, for parents to prepare themselves for the aftermath of the bacteria breeding grounds present at any given school. •

A child’s immune system is torture tested during early school years and although dealing with sick children is an inevitable reality, there are steps parents can take to educate their children and minimize the frequency and severity of illnesses. INFECTIONS SPREAD EASILY Most childhood illnesses are caused by viruses. A single child brings a virus to school and the contamination begins. A child with a cold sneezes or coughs in the classroom spreading infecting respiratory droplets. The nearby children inhale them. If the child has diarrhea and uses the toilet without washing their hands, anything he or she touches spreads germs to other children in contact with the same objects.

AVOID SPREADING GERMS Teach children to cover their mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing and keep tissues on hand encouraging their frequent use. If it isn't possible to reach a tissue in time, remind your child to cough or sneeze into the crook of their elbow. An elbow or upper arm is an effective way to prevent the spreading of germs. If you teach your children this habit at a young age, it will become second nature. •

HAND WASHING IS IMPORTANT •

This is one of the simplest and most

20

The Source

An alcohol-based hand sanitizer should be available at all times. Remind your child to use this before eating, after using a shared computer mouse, pencil sharpener, water fountain or other community objects. You can also provide disinfecting wipes to use in the same way.

Remind your child that hands are often covered with germs and to keep them away from the eyes and mouth.

Instill the value of not sharing water bottles, food or other personal items. A simple rule can be that if the item has been in your mouth, it is not for sharing.

Help your child avoid those who have a communicable infection. A friend with a contagious illness will give it to your child.

Discuss supplements, vitamins, and herbal remedies for cold prevention and severity reduction with your pediatrician.

Other things that can help keep your child healthy are balanced diets, proper sleep and vaccinations such as the flu vaccine.

It can be frustrating when your child gets sick and subsequently infects the entire family in spite of precautions taken to minimize the spreading of germs. Although there is no guarantee that your family and children will not get sick, prevention techniques do work and adopting healthy habits gives students the best chance of staying healthy and in school.

Guru of Hospitality

D By Farid Nouisser

uring my three years in Al Ain, I have had the pleasure of visiting the Ayla Hotel on numerous occasions and although I have seen the general manager briefly in passing, I had not until very recently experienced the delight of an up close and personal discussion with this most distinguished and elegant guru of hospitality.

Meet Mohamed Soussan, husband, father of two lovely daughters, distinguished general manager of one of Al Ain’s landmark hotels and most important of all, our man in focus for this issue of The Source. How did you get started in the hospitality industry? “I am of Lebanese origin but have been living in the UAE for the past 30 years. I am also an Australian citizen where I studied hospitality management. I have always enjoyed the company of a diverse selection of people and have made hospitality both my passion and work since 1988.” Ayla is a relatively new player on the hotel landscape; how long have you been with the company? “I have been with Ayla since day one and was directly involved with the initial team during the early inception phase of the company. It has been a challenge placing

al majlis Ayla in the forefront of the Al Ain Hotel market and we have succeeded by creating magical moments for our guests that are so impressionable, they always come back!”

Mohamed Soussan has raised the bar for hoteliers in Al Ain by becoming the first GM in the Garden City to achieve the top 50 in this year's prestigious Hotelier Middle East Awards -

What do you do that compels your guests to continue returning? Most of our business is derived from business travelers who have a "no nonsense" approach to service and at Ayla we specialize in catering extreme personalized service. I make a habit of calling each and every one of my guests personally to thank them for choosing us either during or after their stay at our hotel. This really leaves a lasting impression and I have garnered many deep relationships over the years as a result.”

Congratulations!

We have noticed that your staff shares a common thread of charm and courtesy; what is your secret in achieving this? Here at Ayla, we really do treat our staff like family and our employer ethos makes a huge difference in the overall attitude. I empower my people and not only encourage but expect them to cross train in every department including my own! I validate and listen to everyone’s opinion, no matter how high or low they are on the chain of command. This creates a happy team and in the end, what we are all striving for – very satisfied guests!” During your years as an hotelier, you have no doubt seen and experienced so much. Can you share a particular story with us that epitomizes the essence of hospitality? “I could speak to you for days on end about my extraordinary experiences but there is one story I will never forget. I happened to be in the lobby of the hotel one afternoon, just in time to witness a rather disgruntled guest shouting at the front desk staff. I quickly stepped in to discover what the problem was. The man and his wife had been given a smoking rather than their requested non-smoking room. I invited him to my office and extended a most heartfelt apology for the mistake along with, much to his surprise, an envelope with an AED 600 reimbursment. After tea and an extended relaxed conversation with this very interesting gentleman, a situation in the hotel required my presence and I excused myself with a promise to return shortly. Upon my return the man had disappeared but I noticed that he had left the envelope with the money on my desk. I immediately called to inform him that he had forgotten the money. His response was a very warm thank you and an explanation as to why he could not accept the offer. He told me that he had received all that was required and much more, and that the money belonged to us. Although we had initially made a

mistake, the manner in which we corrected the error far exceeded any expectations he could have imagined. This man is now, needless to say, not only a friend but also a very happy and loyal repeat guest of our hotel! There are some very exciting things on the horizon for the Ayla Hotel; tell us a little about this. “The Ayla Hotel Group is in the midst of a very exciting expansion, with Ayla Bawadi in its pre-opening phase and The Grand Ayla, a 5 star property across from Al Ain Mall, soon to follow. This is indeed a very exciting time for us. We are an Al Ain based hotel company with future plans of emerging

from our humble beginnings and bringing our unique philosophy of hospitality to many other regions of the UAE and beyond.” What was to be a brief interview turned into a 3 hour affair with a man I could have spent days talking to. It should also be mentioned that Mr. Soussan has recently made the top 50 list of the prestigious Hotelier Middle East awards – an outstanding achievement that the entire Ayla Group is buzzing about! Before I said good-bye to this charming man I asked him to share a few words of wisdom with our readers. He simply recanted his favourite motto; “keep walking!” The Source

How to Host the Perfect Afternoon Tea from Tavola

N 26

The Source

ow that everyone’s favourite kitchen, tableware and bakeware store has opened its doors at Al Ain Mall, we thought we’d ask them their advice on how to host the perfect afternoon tea.

take time in choosing the finest bone china? And does it make any difference which way you drink your tea?

Do you grab the first mug in the cupboard for your favourite beverage or do you

1. Fill the kettle with fresh water before your friend arrives. Switch the kettle on as soon as she rings the doorbell.

There’s no need to save your best china for grand occasions. What could be nicer than welcoming a friend who is coming round for a chat, with a beautifully laid tea tray? As with most things, a little advance preparation makes all the difference:

2. Have a selection of tea ready. Many people appreciate a herbal or decaffeinated option as well as regular tea. 3. Set out all the things you’ll need for tea on a tray. Essentials include cups and saucers, teaspoons, a milk jug and sugar. Optional extras include a teapot with a tea strainer, cubes of sugar with sugar tongs, thin slices of lemon and some biscuits. 4. Sit back, relax and enjoy the company of your friends!

Avoid Homework Harassment Encourage Good Study Habits

L

et’s face it — kids dislike homework. They would probably procrastinate indefinitely if a parent didn’t intervene. The only problem is that our intervening can quickly develop into nagging and even yelling, both of which seldom have the desired outcome.

isn’t something annoying to check off the list, but a way for your child to practice and learn new skills. This doesn’t just help them to pass a test, but also helps them succeed beyond academics.

Parents want their children to learn and develop the necessary study skills for success, but so often our wellintended efforts end in mutual frustration and arguing. If homework time is making your child cranky — and turning you into a homework nag — try a few of these tips.

SET GOALS Help your child to set goals regarding homework. Together, establish an ageappropriate reward system for completing a week of homework. This can be done with a chart which provides visual documentation of progress.

MAKE AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT Chances are you as the parent dislike and dread homework almost as much as your child! Homework battles can simply elevate these pre-existing attitudes. Remind yourself that homework

28

The Source

IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM Is the problem with homework motivational or does your child actually lack the specific skills or abilities necessary to do the assignment? Assessing the issue as one, the other or a combination of both will help you pinpoint the best response.

STUDY SMARTER, NOT HARDER Research demonstrates that consistent study routines and environments do NOT facilitate learning. In fact, alternating study environments results in deeper learning as does varying both the study routines and the content being studied. Studying in different environments is better because it forces the brain to make multiple associations with the same material thus encoding it more deeply. This may actually be a huge relief for many parents. With busy after-school schedules, parents may often get stressed about the ability to complete homework in “a quiet, consistent environment.” Parents need not be afraid to have a child study at a game, a friend’s house, in the car or at the dentist office. BUILD CONFIDENCE Connect a child’s success with the effort they make. Rather than praising their abilities, focus instead on how hard they studied their spelling words and how that effort paid off with a good grade. The 2014/2015 school year has arrived and along with it the many evenings you and your children will spend engaged in homework. Try using these approaches and watch your children grow into the knowledgeable and prepared young adults you had always hoped they would become.

Legendary actor Robin Williams commits suicide Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's Wedding Guest List Had 22 People!

More details of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt‘s surprise secret wedding are coming out. The couple, who are the parents of six children, have been together for almost a decade. They got married on Saturday August 27, 2014in a small, private ceremony in a chapel at Château Miraval in the village of Correns and there were just 22 people in attendance. “The only guests were Brad‘s family from the states,” a source told E! Brad and Angie‘s six children were of course all in attendance, but her father Jon Voight was not there, though he was invited to join the celebration. “[They] said handwritten vows telling each other how much they love each other and their beautiful family and they both had tears in their eyes as did everyone else,” the insider said. “It was short but loaded with meaning, and it was a lovely way to start life in their new family home now that the building work is finally finished.”

Travel with kids Are you having fun yet?

A five-step, tongue-in-cheek guide to achieving family holiday zen

M

any of us will have breathed a sigh of relief this month as the school year starts for our children. It’s not that we don’t enjoy spending time with our precious offspring. It’s because the summer holidays are so long; in my household, we refer to the two-month summer break as Operation

Longvac, and I don’t mind admitting that I’m very relieved to be done with planning activities for my kids on three different continents. If you’re a parent, you’ll also know that travelling with a shouty entourage has its moments. That’s because there’s an initiation parents must go through before you can honestly say family holidays no longer leave you feeling winded. Just for fun, here’s my take on the five stages that must be navigated while travelling with small children: 1-2 years [with a health warning]: While friends with older children watch the sunset,

your toddler has more energy than an atomic explosion. He scales the furniture and hurtles round your holiday home like a hurricane (anything breakable, you’ve already moved higher, or hidden – it was either that or develop such a shrill tone through continually shrieking “Don’t touch that” that it doesn’t even sound like you). Staying in to relax is inconceivable so you’re out and about every.single.day, which means, between your (early) morning latte and lights out, you save his life at least five times. Think of holidays with 1-2 year olds as paying to lead your normal life in a less convenient location. 2-3 years: By now, there’s a sibling on the

my world lasts all week long. You’ve also discovered you can take your children to the best zoos and wildlife parks and introduce them to all manner of cute animals, but they’ll never be as happy as when you discover cockroaches in the kitchen. 4-5 years: By now, you’ve resigned yourself to the fact that holidays aren’t what they used to be, and you’ve learnt how to hit the ground running. On arriving in an unfamiliar environment, you can find the supermarket, buy essentials and whip up a supper for four. Hell, you can even cook fish fingers in an Aga. And with the letting go of any notions of late-nights, lazy days

scene and travelling with two constitutes a whole new level of pain. Expect nightly games of musical beds and heated debates over who slept the less. Do be careful not to let your guard down: your 2-year-old will be irresistibly drawn to dirt, puddles and dog poop, like bees are to honey. (Remember to bring several changes of clothes per day for each family member – expiry through laundry overload isn’t covered by travel insurance.) 3-4 years: Continually ravenous / thirsty / hot / cold / bickering / or in sudden need of the toilet, your children are a zillion times more demanding than your most attentionseeking work colleagues, yet on Facebook it’s all smiley faces in front of stunning backdrops. You’ve tried holidaying with friends so the kids can play together while the adults enjoy some downtime, but the downside is you can no longer claim their bad behaviour is a temporary blip when it

5-6 years: Showing your offspring new things, new places and new horizons is not only rewarding, it’s like putting a down payment on developing citizens of the world. On good days, your rosie-cheeked kiddos slip little hands in yours, and swing happily on the farm gate. On bad days, there’s always electronic stimulation to fall back on. Life-long memories are made, bonds are strengthened, and your children become your ambassadors, opening doors to new experiences and conversations. While they race their new Italian friends around the Campo in Siena, you can actually enjoy your calzone. As the years roll by, you look back at holiday snaps of your babies with rose-tinted specs on, and marvel at those precious, happy moments captured in time.

THE GIVING TREE

BY SHEL SILVERSTEIN 'Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy.' So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation.

How the Horse Was Persuaded

‫حب ألخيك ما تحب لنفسك‬

NOT many days ago a gentleman told me a story which I think is so good, I will tell it to you, and I hope that any of you who have the care of a horse will follow the example given. Said he : I was crossing a sandy ridge when I observed ahead of me a load of hay which the horses were vainly endeavouring to move. A man stood on one side with a stout stick beating one of the animals, but stopped just before I reached them. I asked, " Friends, what is the matter? “We've been pounding this horse for not pulling, and we're going to take him out of the harness and pound him more." See here, my friends, don't do that ; let me advise you my way, and then if he won't pull, I'll take your load to the next town myself." The man looked surprised and asked, "What would you do?" "Give him a feed of oats, and after he has eaten them, brush him, then harness him to the load and start off as though nothing had happened." The man considered a moment as though he hated to do it, but finally answered, "Very well, I'll do it just to satisfy you, but I'm doubtful." We talked while the horse was eating, then we brushed him, and talked kindly in the meanwhile, then hitched onto the load again. The driver mounted, merely said, "Get up," in an ordinary tone, when, to his surprise the horses started off all right. "I'll try your plan every time after this," said he. "If you do, he'll be grateful for your kindness and do all he can for you in return." So they went along each with a better opinion of the other, and one with the sense of having avoided a great wrong and performing a good part instead.
